IN THE NEWS: Learn More About Lutein’s Health Benefits Roughly 15 to 47 percent of the total carotenoid content in dark green leafy vegetables is composed of lutein. Your body needs antioxidants from foods and high-quality supplements to retain overall health and protect against infections and diseases. There are different types of antioxidants, each with its own functions and benefits. One is lutein, a carotenoid antioxidant, whose name is derived from the Latin word “luteus,” meaning “yellow.” Lutein is most known for improving your vision and assisting in fighting age-related eye diseases like cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Green leafy vegetables are abundant in this antioxidant, with lutein comprising 15 to 47 percent of their total carotenoid content. However, you can also find lutein in orange-, yellow- and red-colored fruits and vegetables. Examples of lutein-rich foods to include in your meals are Spinach, Kale, Turnip greens, Swiss chard, Mustard greens, and Watercress. Research has also linked lutein to benefits for your heart, brain, and lungs. Helps improve cognitive function in young adults •Helps improve brain structure — An Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology study confirmed that lutein and zeaxanthin assisted in maintaining the integrity of your brain’s white matter. •May increase youthful neural responses — This Frontiers in Aging Neuroscience article showed that a healthy diet loaded with lutein-rich foods helped promote better neural responses.•May protect human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells — According to this study published in Antioxidants, lutein and lycopene helped enhance eye health by reducing the risk for oxidative stress-caused RPE cell loss and inhibiting the cell growth in undifferentiated RPE cells.•Promote autophagy — This article in The American Journal of Chinese Medicine suggested that lutein may induce autophagy and help shield your body against certain stresses.•Optimized bone health — A study published in Foods highlighted that enhanced levels of macular pigment optical density (MPOD) have a role in promoting better bone health. Carotenoids like lutein and zeaxanthin greatly aid in improving eye health, especially your MPOD, and may induce bone-beneficial abilities.

WELLNESS: Pleasant Smells Can Curb the Urge to Smoke Your sense of smell plays a role in modulating behavior and interpersonal relationships; smokers report a reduction in cravings after smelling pleasant odors. Smells also called olfactory clues, play a significant role in your memories and in your sense of taste. Loss of smell may be one of the initial symptoms of a degenerative neurological disease. Your sense of smell has an impact on your psychological health and how well others are treated, potentially since odors affect the amygdala involved in emotion and the hippocampal system involved in long-term memory. Smoking damages your lungs, cardiovascular system, and cognition; however, while vaping is perceived to be safe, it carries additional long-term dangers affecting the same systems and, if used, should be for a short time to quit smoking. Additional strategies to help you quit smoking are getting healthy first to support your efforts, eating a nutritionally balanced diet, exercising and finding a healthy emotional outlet. NOTE: Ask at the front desk for our stop smoking handout.

CHIROPRACTIC: Did you know a nerve in the spinal cord will communicate up to five different nerves that send information out to your body. Just the pressure of a dime on the back of your hand can decrease the nerves of your spinal cord the ability to communicate by 40%, that’s why misalignments can cause such a problem. There are two basic types of nerves, ones that send information out to the organ, gland or the muscle and one that brings information back from the body to the central nervous system for processing. Outgoing nerves do not perceive any pain only sensory nerves can communicate pain. If you carry pressure on a nerve long enough the organ, gland, or muscle will start to malfunction. Your body knows exactly what to do to maintain your health it just needs to communicate with every part of your body and it needs the building blocks to make healthy tissue cells, enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. Every “drug” that you needs your body can make and it rarely causes side effects. Even your brain and spinal cord need nerve supply and so one level will enervate another level. When your structure is out of balance it put stress on your nervous system as a whole. As we bring your structure back into balance your body will begin to function a lot better and most patients can feel that with better energy, feeling more relaxed and sleeping better. You have a doctor inside, in chiropractic we call that innate intelligence and your body’s intelligence can keep you well so take care of your body.

IN THE NEWS: Scientists Discover Why Sleeping Less Than 7 Hours Is Linked to Heart Disease The link between sleep and health has never been stronger, but for all the data that chides us for not getting enough rest each night, there are still lingering questions. For instance, how is it possible that sleep can be linked to seemingly unrelated health effects, including cardiovascular disease and anxiety? Well, at least when it comes to heart disease, a new paper in Experimental Physiologyprovides some concrete answers. Lack of sleep can affect mood and academic performance, but it has also been linked to heart conditions in population-based studies. The CDC has published materials suggesting that sleeping for less than seven hours is linked to type 2 diabetes, obesity, and high blood pressure, all of which increase the risk of heart disease. Working with Jamie Hijmans, a doctoral candidate and fellow in DeSouza’s lab, the team showed that sleeping for less than seven hours a night can reduce specific fragments of non-coding RNA molecules found in blood called microRNAs. Participants reported how many hours they slept per night, and the researchers divided them into two even groups: those who reported sleeping for seven hours or more, and those who slept for less than seven hours. That seven-hour mark isn’t a hard and fast benchmark for a healthy amount of sleep. Usually the range is somewhere from seven to nine hours of sleep — though seven seems to consistently be on the low end of the healthy range and is used in the CDC’s guidance materials. However, there are subgroups, like teens, which may require far more sleep to function normally. As far as microRNAs go, seven seems to work as a benchmark, adds Hijmans. NOTE: past studies have shown that sleep is also essential for the brain to detoxify which helps prevents dementia. If you have problems with sleep we can help.

WELLNESS: Nutrients that help keep you well. The fundamental problem with most of our chronic diseases is inflammation. To regulate inflammation you should eat foods that are anti-inflammatory you should eat more vegetables. People who eat fish outlive people who don’t. Fish like tuna and salmon contain anti-inflammatory oils and should be eaten 2 to 3 times a week. Antioxidants that you find in foods like grapes, pomegranate, and blueberries can reduce free radicals within the bloodstream that can cause cellular damage. Antioxidants can reduce heart disease, cancer, arthritis and other chronic diseases. Nutrients like vitamin A and D and vitamin C helps stimulate a strong immune system and can help prevent as well as treat certain infections. Shingles can be a painful condition which comes from the virus that causes chickenpox. Even after a case of chickenpox is resolved this virus, in some cases, can remain dormant within certain nerves of the body only to show up as shingles later in life. L-lysine is an amino acid that helps the body control this virus. Taking l-lysine or immune formulas that contain l-lysine can be very effective in preventing as well as treating shingles. Nitric oxide formulas that center around the amino acid L-arginine can help raise the amount of oxygen and blood flow throughout the body, conditions like ED or cardiovascular problems respond well to these formulas. Type II diabetes is a growing problem in the US basically due to the amount of refined carbohydrates that the average American gets which produces too much insulin that eventually the cells get immune to and thus blood sugar is not controlled. A good B complex with minerals like chromium or vanadium and small amounts of cinnamon in the diet can rehabilitate the cells ability to recognize insulin and thus lower blood sugar naturally. All these nutrients work better with the proper diet so following your body type diet is crucial as a foundation to better health.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Sleep and sleep positions  For the best quality of sleep you need to support your neck and back in a way that relaxes the muscles along with spine. The proper sleep position will not only enhance the quality of sleep but will help prevent you from waking up with aches and pains. If you’re someone who tosses and turns a lot at night you might benefit from a supplement called niacin. A time-released niacin tablet can keep your blood flowing in a way to make your muscles more relaxed and less likely to develop pressure points that require you to turn over. Stomach sleeping is the worst position that you can sleep in because you have to turn your neck all night to breathe and it stresses your low back. Side sleeping with the appropriate pillow thickness under your head to keep your neck and spine and align in keeping something you between your knees or for your bent knee a rest on it is important. For back sleeping support your neck not your head and consider a pillow under your knees.

The farmer noticed that his prize cow was missing from the field through which the railroad passed. He filed suit against the railroad company for the value of the cow. The case was to be tried before the Justice of the Peace in the back room of the General Store. The attorney immediately cornered the farmer and tried to get him to settle out of court. The lawyer did his best selling job, and the farmer finally agreed to take half of what he was claiming to settle the case. After the farmer signed the release and took the check, the young lawyer couldn’t help but gloat a little over his success. He said to the farmer, “You know, I hate to tell you this but I put one over on you in there. I couldn’t have won the case. The engineer was asleep and the fireman was in the caboose when the train went through your farm that morning. I didn’t have one witness to put on the stand.” The old farmer replied, “Well, I’ll tell you, young feller, I was a little worried about winning that case myself because that durned cow came home this morning!”

IN THE NEWS: Could Lactose Explain the Milk and Parkinson’s Disease Link? Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s. Each year in the United States, approximately 60,000 new cases are diagnosed, bringing the total number of current cases up to about a million, with tens of thousands of people dying from the disease every year. The dietary component most often implicated is milk and contamination of milk by neurotoxins has been considered the “only possible explanation. The risk increased by 17 percent for every small glass of milk a day and 13 percent for every daily half slice of cheese. Again, the standard explanation is that the risk is from all the pesticides and other neurotoxins in dairy, but that doesn’t explain why there’s more risk attached to some dairy products than others. Pesticide residues are found in all dairy products, so why should milk be associated with Parkinson’s more than cheese is? The relationship between dairy and Huntington’s disease appears similar. Huntington’s is a horrible degenerative brain disease that runs in families and whose early onset may be doubled by dairy consumption, but again, this may be more milk consumption than cheese consumption, which brings us back to the clue in the more-milk-more-mortality study. Anytime we hear disease risks associated with more milk than cheese—more oxidative stress and inflammation—we should think galactose, the milk sugar rather than the milk fat, protein, or pesticides. That’s why we think milk drinkers specifically appeared to have a higher risk of bone fractures and death, which may explain the neurodegeneration findings, too. Not only do rare individuals with an inability to detoxify the galactose found in milk suffer damage to their bones, but they also exhibit damage to their brains.

WELLNESS: Catnip: An Herb That You and Your Cat Would Love Popular among cat lovers because of its effects on felines, catnip also offers numerous health benefits for humans, providing relaxing effects and alleviating digestive ailments because of its active compounds. Catnip may be used to relieve problems in your feline companions, including flatulence, skin conditions and anxiety. The effects of catnip largely depend on how cats are exposed to this herb. Catnip has a hyperactive effect on cats when sniffed or inhaled, but has a sedative effect when eaten. The catnip plant has numerous benefits for both felines and people. In humans, it may: Help with digestive discomfort — Catnip may be used to ease tension in the smooth muscles of the stomach. This helps stop the spasms that usually cause stomachaches and any digestive pain. Promote relaxation — German scientists note that nepetalactone isomers found in catnip function similarly to the sedative components of valerian root. This may help alleviate anxiety symptoms and promote better sleep quality. Helps fight off infections — A 2012 study showed that catnip has antimicrobial properties that may be effective against foodborne pathogens, including Shigella and Salmonella. It works through its bactericidal and bacteriostatic activities. Function as a menstrual aid — For years, catnip has been used to promote better menstrual flow, helping lessen abdominal cramps and other discomforts that usually accompany the menstrual cycle.
