I've also read that most people have an excess of omega 6's and need to decrease the amount of 6's in their diet in order for the 3's to function well. I guess most of us are lacking in 3's.

3 Long-term stress depletes serotonin levels. Short term stress actually increases serotonin, but after time you get burn-out and it becomes increasingly difficult for the body to produce serotonin. So reduce stress--this can be as simple as adding exercise and meditation to the daily routine or as life changing as choosing to leave a really stressful job.

IN THE NEWS: Antibiotic Use Linked to Childhood ObesityChildren under the age of two who are treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics are more likely to be obese later in childhood, a study epublished in JAMA Pediatrics on September 29 reported. Children who were exposed to antibiotics — especially broad-spectrum antibiotics — as infants had an 11% greater likelihood of becoming obese sometime between the ages of two and five compared to infants who had never taken an antibiotic or who were treated with narrow-spectrum antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxicillin. Infants who took four or more antibiotics, including at least one broad-spectrum antibiotic, had a 16% greater risk of obesity later in childhood. The earlier a child began taking broad-spectrum antibiotics, the greater the risk he or she would become obese between ages three to five.

WELLNESS: DRINKING SODA AGES YOUR IMMUNE CELLS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A DAILY SMOKING HABIT Research published in the American Journal of Public Health claims that drinking soda on a daily basis ages your immune cells to a degree similar to that of a daily smoking habit. To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the effect of sugary sodas on human telomeres. At the very tip of each arm of the chromosome is where you'll find the telomere. Your telomeres shorten with time because they cannot replicate completely each time the cell divides. Hence, as you get older, your telomeres get shorter and shorter. They found that people who drank more sugary soda tended to have shorter telomeres. Drinking an 8-ounce daily serving of soda corresponded to 1.9 years of additional aging, and drinking a daily 20-ounce serving was linked to 4.6 more years of aging.

Okay so most headaches will NOT kill you but if you look to pain killers as a cover up then that’s another story. The unprecedented rise in overdose deaths in the US parallels a 300% increase since 1999 in the sale of these strong painkillers. These drugs were involved in 14,800 overdose deaths in 2008, more than cocaine and heroin combined. The misuse and abuse of prescription painkillers was responsible for more than 475,000 emergency department visits in 2009, a number that nearly doubled in just five years.

But if the pain pills don’t kill you then there is a growing problem with addiction. It is estimated today that there are more than 4.7 million Americans dependent on prescription painkillers, which represents up to 2% of the US adult population overall, and this number continues to grow every year.

Studies show that chiropractic care is the most effective treatment on the planet for headaches. This is an important point: when your headache feels better with drugs you have not fixed anything, you’ve just covered up the problem. When your headaches get better under chiropractic care it’s because you’re correcting the underlining condition that’s causing the headache. Even when you think it’s just tension, tension just causes the muscles in your neck to tighten bringing out the misalignment in your neck that’s the root cause of your headache. If the misalignment wasn’t there the tension would not cause the headache.

WELLNESS: Earthing may actually be one of the best-kept secrets for preventing blood clots—it's an old practice gaining a new appreciation! In the simplest terms, Earthing (or grounding your body to the earth) is what occurs when you walk barefoot on bare soil, grass, sand, brick, etc. Free electrons are transferred from the earth into your body through your feet, and these electrons are some of the most potent antioxidants known to man. One of the most important discoveries about Earthing is that it makes your blood less viscous, which has profound implications for your cardiovascular health because virtually every aspect of cardiovascular disease has been correlated with elevated blood viscosity. Earthing is so effective at achieving a blood thinning effect that anyone take prescription anticoagulants like Coumadin need to lower their dosage if they start to implement Earthing.

DIET: IS YOUR BODY BURNING UP WITH DISEASE? It is becoming increasingly clear that chronic inflammation is the root cause of many serious illnesses - including heart disease, many cancers, and Alzheimer's disease. We all know inflammation on the surface of the body as local redness, heat, swelling and pain. It is the cornerstone of the body's healing response, bringing more nourishment and more immune activity to a site of injury or infection. But when inflammation persists or serves no purpose, it damages the body and causes illness. Stress, lack of exercise, genetic predisposition, and exposure to toxins (like secondhand tobacco smoke) can all contribute to such chronic inflammation, but dietary choices play a big role as well. IN THE NEWS: Zohydro: Why this new painkiller could spark another addiction epidemic The controversial drug is Zohydro, an extended-release painkiller containing the already widely used opioid, hydrocodone.  The company claims that acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States, and 63 percent of these cases are caused by hydrocodone-acetaminophen combination drugs.  Zohydro is meant to provide pain relief without this threat of liver toxicity. But addiction experts claim this argument isn’t enough to outweigh the potential dangers posed by the painkiller.  Because of its extremely high dosage and lack of abuse deterrents, many believe Zohydro could easily ignite another addiction epidemic – as well as a new wave of overdose deaths. “I treat addiction, and see countless young people come in – a lot of guys in their late 20s, early 30s – who had a sports injury and were given an opiate.  I’m seeing them years later, and it’s devastated their lives,” Dr. Dana Jane Saltzman, a licensed acupuncturist and addiction specialist in New York City, told FoxNews.com. “...It’s really a lifelong struggle, and a lot of these kids wouldn’t be addicted if [opioids] weren’t so readily available.”

Casual marijuana use linked with brain abnormalities, study finds

Loren Grush

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects.

For the first time, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development.

Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual marijuana use after previous work in his lab found that heavy cannabis use caused similar brain abnormalities to those seen in patients with schizophrenia.

"The interaction of marijuana with brain development could be a significant problem."- Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author

“There were abnormalities in their working memory, which is fundamental to everything you do,” Breiter, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told FoxNews.com.  “When you make judgments or decisions, plan things, do mathematics – anything you do always involves working memory.  It’s one of the core fundamental aspects of our brains that we use every day.  So given those findings, we decided we need to look at casual, recreational use.”

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

For their most recent study, Breiter and his team analyzed a very small sample of patients between the ages of 18 and 25: 20 marijuana users and 20 well-matched control subjects.  The marijuana users had a wide range of usage routines, with some using the drug just once or twice a week and others using it every single day.

Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the researchers analyzed the participants’ brains, focusing on the nucleus accumbens (NAC) and the amygdala – two key brain regions responsible for processing emotions, making decisions and motivation.  They looked at these brain structures in three different ways, measuring their density, volume and shape.

According to Breiter, all three were abnormal in the casual marijuana users.

“For the NAC, all three measures were abnormal, and they were abnormal in a dose-dependent way, meaning the changes were greater with the amount of marijuana used,” Breiter said.  “The amygdala had abnormalities for shape and density, and only volume correlated with use.  But if you looked at all three types of measures, it showed the relationships between them were quite abnormal in the marijuana users, compared to the normal controls.”

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Because these brain regions are central for motivation, the findings from Northwestern help support the well-known theory that marijuana use leads to a condition called amotivation. Also called amotivational syndrome, this psychological condition causes people to become less oriented towards their goals and purposes in life, as well as seem less focused in general.

Given these eye-opening results,  Breiter said that more research is needed to look into marijuana’s effects on the brain – even in those who use the drug only once or twice a month.

“We need to see what happens longitudinally,” Breiter said. “What happens as you follow people over time?  What happens if they stop using – do these bad effects continue? What happens if you can intervene early?...My worry is we haven’t studied this compound and here we are looking to change legislation on it.”

Although Breiter’s team members did not examine the patients’ cognitive symptoms, they do believe that the brain abnormalities seen in their study could lead to substantial effects on brain development and behavior, especially given the young ages of the participants.  Breiter also acknowledged the problems of analyzing a very small study sample – but said that their findings should still serve as a wake-up call to others.

“This study is just a beginning pilot study, but at the same time, the results that came out are the same as a canary in a coal mine,” Breiter said.  “...The interaction of marijuana with brain development could be a significant problem.”

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,The war against illegal drug use has been going on for decades, but now it seems the “war on drugs” should have a new target… Legal drug addiction is taking lives in record numbers.

In the UK, 1 million people are addicted to over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription painkillers and tranquilizers; that’s significantly more than the number addicted to illegal drugs.1

In the US, it’s a similar story. There were four times more deaths among women from prescription painkiller overdose than for cocaine and heroin deaths combined in 2010.2

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,Legal drug addiction is tricky because it often starts out with a prescription obtained from a doctor. Many people find themselves addicted to painkillers before they even realize what’s happened, often after taking the drugs to recover from surgery or treat chronic back, or other, pain.

Three Factors That Might Increase Your Risk of Becoming Addicted to Painkillers

Painkillers work by interacting with receptors in your brain resulting in a decrease in the perception of pain. They are inherently addictive, as they also create a temporary feeling of euphoria, followed by dysphoria, that can easily lead to physical dependence and addiction. However, why certain people become addicted while others get by unfazed has remained a mystery.

Researchers from the University of Derby set out to determine what might be influencing painkiller addiction and dependence by conducting an anonymous survey of people who had pain and had used painkillers in the last month. They found three predictors that they said identified those most at risk of developing painkiller dependence. It included those who:3

  • Used prescription painkillers more frequently
  • Have a prior history of substance abuse (often unrelated to pain relief)
  • Are less accepting of pain or less able to cope with pain

According to the authors, pain, prior substance abuse and psychological factors may all play a role in a person’s likelihood of addiction. They concluded:

“Based on these findings, a preliminary model is presented with three types of influence on the development of painkiller dependence: 1) pain leading to painkiller use, 2) risk factors for substance-related problems irrespective of pain, and 3) psychological factors related to pain.”

Painkiller Addiction Knows No Bounds

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care. The face of drug addiction in the US and around the globe is changing. You can certainly not gauge who is an addict by looks or occupation. In fact, painkiller addiction spans all ages and walks of life.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

For instance, a significant number of older adults, particularly those in the baby boomer generation, are struggling with both illicit and prescription drug abuse.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that the number of people in their 50s who are abusing illicit or prescription drugs more than doubled from 2002 to 2010, going from 2.7 to 5.8 percent in this population. Among those 65 and older, 414,000 used such drugs in 2010.4

Among seniors, the health risks of all medications are increased, because the body takes longer to break down and get rid of the drug than it does in a younger person. As a result, the drug stays in an older person's system longer, where it can cause even greater damage.

At the other end of the spectrum, one in four teens has misused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime, according to survey results from the partnership at Drugfree.org and the MetLife Foundation.5 Prescription drugs don’t hold the same stigma as illegal recreational drugs, even though they can be just as deadly, leading teens to regard the former as a “safe” way to get high.

Prescription drugs have even been described by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as the “drug of choice” second only to marijuana for today’s teens.6

Sadly, some teens pay for this one “bad” decision with their lives. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and these drug-induced fatalities are not being driven by illegal street drugs. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the most commonly abused prescription drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax, and Soma now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.7

And while men are still more likely to die from prescription painkiller overdose, women are quickly catching up. More than 6,600 women, or 18 women every day, died from a prescription painkiller overdose in 2010. The problem, once primarily seen in inner cities, is now spanning to rural areas, hitting people of all ethnic backgrounds and income levels, from business professionals to single mothers to retirees.

Painkiller Addiction Can Easily Lead to Death

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Painkillers (opioids) like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are one of the most commonly abused drug classes. These drugs are not only addictive, they can lead to slowed breathing and death if too much is taken, and the risks are compounded if you add alcohol to the equation.

Many are not aware that pain-killing drugs like fentanyl are actually 100 times more potent than natural opioids like morphine, making the addictive potential and side effects associated with prescription drug use much higher. And it doesn’t always take extremely excessive use, or even very long-term use, to have a fatal overdose.

For many, once you start taking these drugs it sets off a cascade of reactions in your body that make it extremely difficult to stop. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and CNN's chief medical correspondent, reported:8

“…after just a few months of taking the pills, something starts to change in the body. The effectiveness wears off, and patients typically report getting only about 30% pain relief, compared with when they started. Even more concerning, a subgroup of these patients develop a condition known as hyperalgesia, an increased sensitivity to pain.

As you might guess, all of this creates a situation where the person starts to take more and more pills. And even though they are no longer providing much pain relief, they can still diminish the body's drive to breathe. If you are awake you may not notice it, but if you fall asleep with too many of these pills in your system, you never wake up. Add alcohol, and the problem is exponentially worse. People who take pain or sleeping pills and drink a couple glasses of wine are playing Russian roulette.”

prostate-cancer-Dr. Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor, neck pain, headache,Because such overdoses now kill more people than cocaine and heroin combined, more US states are now taking action to try and stop this growing problem. As USA Today reported:9

  • Alabama has instituted three new laws that give more medical personnel access to the state’s prescription monitoring program database, as well as tighten regulations on pain management clinics and making “doctor shopping” to get multiple prescriptions punishable by jail time
  • Indiana instituted new oversight powers to the state attorney general on pain management clinics and is considering mandatory annual drug screening of people prescribed opioids
  • Kentucky now requires pain clinics to be licensed and mandates that physicians check electronic prescription records before writing opioid prescriptions
  • Washington state has set dosage limits for physicians who prescribe pain medications, and prescriptions over a certain amount must be approved by a pain specialist
  • New York has a requirement that physicians and pharmacists check the state’s drug-monitoring program database before prescribing opioids

Managing Your Pain the Drug-Free Way

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care. Many of those addicted to painkillers started taking the drugs not to get high, but to control pain – often back pain. The solution, then, is to avoid taking the drugs in the first place, an option many physicians neglect to offer to their pain patients. If you are suffering from pain, I suggest you work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner to determine what's really triggering your pain, and then address the underlying cause. If you have chronic pain, try these first, before even thinking about prescription painkillers of any kind.

  1. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is a drug-free approach for pain management of all kinds. EFT borrows from the principles of acupuncture, in that it helps you balance out your subtle energy system.

It helps resolve underlying, often subconscious, negative emotions that may be exacerbating your physical pain. By stimulating (tapping) well-established acupuncture points with your fingertips, you rebalance your energy system, which tends to dissipate pain.

  1. Astaxanthin: One of the most effective fat-soluble antioxidants known. It has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and in many cases works far more effectively than anti-inflammatory drugs. Higher doses are typically required and one may need 8 mg or more per day to achieve this benefit.
  2. Ginger: This herb has potent anti-inflammatory activity and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.
  3. Curcumin: In a study of osteoarthritis patients, those who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility.10 A past study also found that a turmeric extract composed of curcuminoids blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the overproduction of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.
  4. Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or "Indian frankincense," this herb contains specific active anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  5. Krill Oil: The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA contained in krill oil have been found by many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for pain.
  6. Bromelain: This enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple, including some of the bromelain-rich stem, may also be helpful.
  7. Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a "joint lubricant" and an anti-inflammatory. I have used this for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards. I used a topical preparation for this.
  8. Evening Primrose, Black Currant, and Borage Oils: These contain the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain.
  9. Cayenne Cream: Also called capsaicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body's supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmits pain signals to your brain.
  10. Methods such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation, hot and cold packs, and even holding hands can also result in astonishing pain relief without any drugs.

IN THE NEWS: YOUNG ADULTS 'DAMAGE DNA' WITH WEEKEND ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that around four out of five college students in the US drink alcohol and 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year as a result of unintentional alcohol-related injuries. An experiment, called the comet test, was conducted to see whether the participants' DNA was also affected by alcohol consumption. This involved taking out the nucleus of lymphocytic cells in the blood and putting it through electrophoresis. The experiment revealed that the group who consumed alcohol showed significantly bigger comet tails in the electrophoresis, compared with the group that did not drink alcohol. In detail, 8% of cells were damaged in the control group, but 44% were damaged in the drinking group. This means the drinking group had 5.3 times more damage to their cells.

WELLNESS:  THE MANY HEALTH BENEFITS OF AVOCADOS Avocados have a long list of potential health benefits. For example, besides its anti-inflammatory properties, previous research from Japan suggests this powerful fruit may also help protect against liver damage. Due to its beneficial raw fat content, avocado enables your body to more efficiently absorb fat-soluble nutrients (such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein) in other foods eaten in conjunction. Contain compounds that appear to inhibit and destroy oral cancer cells Can help improve lipid profiles in both healthy individuals and those with non optimized HDL/ total cholesterol levels). In one study,8 healthy individuals saw a 16 percent decrease of serum total cholesterol level following a one-week long diet high in monounsaturated fat from avocados. In those with elevated cholesterol levels, the avocado diet resulted in a 17 percent decrease of serum total cholesterol, and a 22 percent decrease of both LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, along with an 11 percent increase of the so-called “good” HDL cholesterol.

All patients were classified as hearing impaired though greater on the right. At 40dB using the Ventry & Weinstein criteria, 6 had hearing restored, 7 improved and 2 had no change. At 25dB using the Speech-frequency criteria, none were restored, 11 improved, 4 had no change and 3 missed a tone.

IN THE NEWS: FDA SUED, FORCED TO REMOVE SAFETY STATUS ON TRANS FATS For the past 60 years, saturated animal fats have been wrongfully accused of causing heart disease, despite mounting evidence showing that saturated fat is actually critical for optimal health while trans fat is the dietary fat causing heart disease. In 1961, the American Heart Association began encouraging Americans to limit dietary fat, particularly animal fats, in order to reduce their risk of heart disease. In the decades since, despite low-fat diets becoming increasingly part of the norm, heart disease rates have soared. “In the 1980s, some scientists began to associate heart disease with saturated fats, and in response, groups such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest and the National Heart Savers Association (NHSA) began to hound manufacturers for “poisoning America ... by using saturated fats,” and as a result “nearly all targeted firms responded by replacing saturated fats with trans fats,” as David Schleifer wrote in 2012 for the journal Technology and Culture.10   At the time, many restaurants used beef fat for frying, which groups like CSPI believed was far worse than hydrogenated oils...” SEE http://www.keefeclinic.com/wp/the-truth-about-cholesterol/

WELLNESS:Prescription opioid analgesics increase depression risk Scherrer JF, et al. J Gen Intern Med. Oct 29, 2013. Investigators examining the association between opioid analgesics and risk of depression gathered data on 49,770 patients without a diagnosis of depression or record of opioid use in the last 24 months from the US Department of Veterans Affairs. Participants were each prescribed opioid analgesics for varying lengths of time (91% had a prescription for <90 days, 4% for 90 to 180 days, and 5% for >180 days). Increased risk of depression correlated significantly with opioid duration—suggesting that patients who are given an opioid be monitored for development of depression.

CHIROPRACTIC: FROZEN SHOULDER SYNDROME IMPROVES WITH CHIROPRACTIC CARE 98% of patients studied with Frozen Shoulder Syndrome (Adhesive Capsulitis) responded positively Of the case files reviewed, 20 were male and 30 were female; and all were between the ages of 40 and 70 years. The average number of days under care was 28 days (range, 11 to 51 days). The median change in Numeric Pain Rating Scale score was −7 (range, 0 to −10). Of the 50 cases, 16 resolved completely (100% improvement), 25 showed 75% to 90% improvement, 8 showed 50% to 75% improvement, and 1 showed 0% to 50% improvement. Conclusion: 98% of patients treated with frozen shoulder syndrome were reported to have improved with chiropractic care.

A woman burst out of the examining room screaming after her young physician tells her she is pregnant. The director of the clinic stopped her and asked what the problem was. After she tells him what happened, the doctors had her sit down and relax in another room and he marched down the hallway where the woman’s physician was and demanded, “What is wrong with you? Mrs. Miller is 60 years old, has six grown children and nine grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The young physician continued to write his notes and without looking up at his superior, asked, “Does she still have the hiccups?”

DIET: OREOS ARE FOUND TO BE AS ADDICTIVE AS COCAINE When you eat refined processed sugars, they trigger production of your brain's natural opioids -- a key ingredient in the addiction process. Your brain essentially becomes addicted to stimulating the release of its own opioids as it would to morphine or heroin. As reported by Connecticut college: “...Oreos activated significantly more neurons than cocaine or morphine. 'This correlated well with our behavioral results and lends support to the hypothesis that high-fat/ high sugar foods can be thought of as addictive,' said Schroeder. Indeed, scientific research into the addictive nature of certain foods, combined with shocking “insider” exposés,tells us that Americans are not necessarily lacking in self control when it comes to their food consumption. Rather, food companies have perfected food concoctions that are addictive. And they know it.

WELLNESS: SLEEP IS CRITICAL FOR BRAIN DETOXIFICATION, GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH FINDS How to Optimize Your Sleep: Avoid watching TV or using your computer at night This tricks your brain into thinking it's still daytime, thereby shutting down melatonin secretion. Sleep in complete darkness, or as close to it as possible. Even the slightest bit of light in the room can disrupt your internal clock and your pineal gland's production of melatonin and serotonin. Keep the temperature in your bedroom no higher than 70 degrees F. Studies show that the optimal room temperature for sleep is between 60 to 68 degrees. Take a hot bath 90 to 120 minutes before bedtime. This increases your core body temperature, and when you get out of the bath it abruptly drops, signaling your body that you are ready for sleep. Check your bedroom for electro-magnetic fields (EMFs). These can disrupt your pineal gland and the production of melatonin and serotonin, and may have other negative effects as well. Move alarm clocks and other electrical devices away from your bed. If these devices must be used, keep them as far away from your bed as possible, preferably at least three feet.

Exercise is a word that might conjure up images of sweating, groaning and hard work. Exercise also brings to mind fitness, endurance and a well shaped body. The type of exercise that a person needs depends on the person's goals. If you want to sculpture your body, then weight lifting might be your fastest form. If you want to keep in shape, then toning and stretching might be the best. When it comes to your health, then the type of exercise needed should relate to your metabolism. For instance, if you're a thyroid type endurance is important, so maybe jogging, aerobic dancing or swimming would serve you best.

If you're a G- type then mind/body exercises that concentrate on upper body coordination are best, like kung fu or karate, ballet or jazz dancing. If you're a P- type you need mind/body exercises that are not highly repetitive. P-types need complicated aerobic exercise: Tai chi or karate with a balanced nautilus program once a week. T-Types need endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Brisk walking or jogging, Dancing, Swimming, Biking. And A- types need to develop hand/eye coordination like tennis, ballet, racquetball and need to avoid rowing and weight lifting as they overstimulate their systems.

There is no one exercise that fits everybody so finding one you enjoy is the key. Also finding ways to keep motivated are crucial, like having a friend that you exercise with. When it comes to exercise moderation is important. Some people become obsessed and downright addicted to over-exercise. Exercise can cause the release of some chemicals that can give a person a natural high. If you're having chemical problems you can become addicted to exercise because of the way it makes you feel. If you find yourself exercising to the point of injury or you have multiple injuries in your history of exercise it could mean that you're addicted.

Exercise should not be an excuse for not correcting metabolic problems that you have. It is true exercise can help your metabolism but it won't correct imbalances that are nutritionally related. If you find you are using exercise in that manner you need to go through a nutritional program to balance your metabolism. Also to use exercise to control neck or back pain could be a misuse of exercise. If you find that you have spinal pain if you don't exercise than you have an unresolved structural problem that you're only covering up by exercise. Even though the pain is gone the degenerative processes is still going forward. Over time you'll develop a problem that exercise will no longer help. At that point you might have a problem that will be very difficult to correct. Proper Chiropractic care along with exercise can help you resolve the problem.

Exercise needs to become part of your lifestyle or else you will not be able to stay with it. You need to find a way to integrate exercise within your schedule. The rewards of proper exercise will far outweigh the cost.

Studies show more people are searching for natural solutions for their health. In 1993 the American Medical Association did a survey of health habits of Americans and found that more Americans visited doctors that practiced natural healthcare then doctors that practiced drug therapy and surgery.

There are many reasons for this shift in healthcare. Some people are concerned about the side effects that drugs have, (2000 deaths per week and over 1 million injuries per year), some people have a sense of body ecology and don't want to put any artificial substances within their body. Some people have discovered drugs mainly cover-up symptoms and never get to the root of their problem, and are more concerned with maximizing their health than just making some symptoms disappear.

If you are going to use the device in any position other than standing I recommend starting out with the first level of intensity and work your way up slowly. It's recommended when you first get the unit to position it against the wall or maybe in a corner where you have walls on both sides or between the wall and a piece of furniture for support. For balance and coordination is recommended not to hold onto anything by using the device but until you developed a good sense of balance you might want something you can grab onto if you feel like you're losing your balance.

You can virtually exercise every muscle in your body with this device and you can slide exercise tubing with handgrips under the device to exercise your arms while standing. But the best way to exercise your arms is in the sit up or half set up posture with your arms on the device (start at the lowest setting).

  • Don't quit "forever" just stop for a day - and tomorrow try it for another day, and tomorrow and tomorrow.
  • Tell your friends and family you're quitting. A public commitment bolsters will power.
  • Pick Q (QUIT) Day and quit.
  • Hide all evidence of cigarettes, ashtrays, matches, etc, so you aren't reminded of your renunciation.
  • Lay in a supply of chewing gum, celery sticks, nuts, carrot sticks, etc.

If you need help, we can employ auriculo-therapy which is a physical therapy modality used in addictive disease. This therapy consists of specific micro-electrical currents which are directed to isolated points on the ear which triggers the release of pituitary hormones (endorphins) which is thought to alter simulative physiological brain pathways.

Effects Of Auricular Therapy On Drug Addictions

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

It has been found that by stimulating these acupuncture points in the ear, you could enhance what is known as an "award cascade" effect from the limbic system. This re-balances an addict's chemistry. It can change the addiction from an overwhelming compulsion to a manageable situation which the patient can then eliminate. Certainly, many drug addicts would give anything to rid themselves of their habits - but that over-whelming compulsion to use the drug is more than they can overcome. Thus, this help is a wonderful asset to the addict on a physiological level.

Peeling The Onion

The Layers

By the time the first symptoms of most health care problems appear, that condition has been developing for months, if not years. There is an initial incident that causes normal function to be interrupted. After the loss of normal function, the next step is the tissue change or pathology. Then after enough tissue damage has taken place, symptoms will finally begin to appear. Considering this, it is clear that by the time we feel or know something is wrong the process is already in one of its later stages.

The 40 year old executive who dies of a sudden heart attack may have had no symptoms beforehand, no forewarning that the problem was there until too late. However, he did not just get "sick". There were processes leading up to that fatal moment of symptoms. This is basically true with most other health care problems. When the underlying dysfunction begins, the body tries to compensate. Then the dysfunction changes in nature, and the body again tries to compensate for that change. Each one of these compensations become, in fact, a" layer" of the disease process. Battle after battle, war after war, the two processes rage on: breakdown, degeneration, and death fight against repair, regeneration, and life. Back and forth it goes, until eventually, in the disease process, the degeneration starts to win, and, in time, symptoms inform the person of this fact. Usually the first symptoms are faint and infrequent. Gradually they become more severe and frequent, until the person realizes that something is really wrong. Unfortunately, in our society, the first step then is to try to SUPPRESS these symptoms.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Traditional Drug Approach

The American health care system approach is sadly ineffective: most doctors will recommend a drug or medication to help cover up or suppress the symptoms. Aspirin for chronic headaches, coating solutions for chronic indigestion, tranquilizers for chronic anxiety, nervousness, depression, painkillers for chronic pain, and on and on. These approaches simply do not deal with the problem. As we sedate or cover up the symptoms, this allows the disease process time to become more chronic, more imbedded and deep-seated, and more difficult for the body to correct, or repair.

The Layers Accumulate

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

When the patient, finally desperate enough to seek alternative health care options, finds a doctor who is involved in returning the body back to true health, he can find himself in an uphill struggle. By now there is layer upon layer upon layer of the disease process already in place. There will also be toxic remains within the body from the drugs, that will have to be eliminated. Most disease processes change as they progress; as more and more tissues become involved, and then different organs.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

The natural health care physician now must help the patient work back through each of these levels in an effort to reach true health. The disease process could represent 5-40 years of progression! However, the patient may have only had symptoms for weeks or months. His expectation is to be well in a week or so, unless he is made aware of the true nature of his condition. The healing process can take time, as the body back-tracks through each level of toxicity and dysfunction until it returns itself to 100% normal function.

Vega Testing Evaluation

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

This layer effect is something that becomes very obvious in our offices when we utilize VEGA-TESTING as part of the diagnostic evaluation of a patient. When a patient comes in with a particular symptom which concerns him, we do the initial testing. Certain organs, glands, deficiencies, etc. show up at that time. As we treat these, we may find that the condition will improve, but not completely disappear. Further testing then may reveal other organs or glands that need to be treated; or the same gland may need additional treatment that wasn't evident at the first test.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

This is because the body can only deal with certain levels at a time. To use an example, if we are dealing with a certain stomach condition, it may actually be a condition that is being affected by the pancreas, the liver, the kidneys, and the colon. The initial diagnostic evaluation may only show a problem with the stomach that is associated with the pancreas. As we treat the pancreas, strengthen its function, and clear that problem, then the liver and colon may show up. They will then need to be supported, and treated. After that the kidney may show up. This is because it reflects the process of how the stomach problem first originated. We will go through a reverse order until we completely clear out all the factors that lead to the particular stomach problem; then the stomach will completely heal at that time. In this process. symptoms may have gotten better at each stage, or there might not have been any symptom relief until we got to the final stage.

"Fix Me Now!"

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

Because of these particular complexities, there may be a time factor involved in the healing process that we as Americans are unprepared for. "Plop plop, Fizz fizz, Oh, what a relief it is!" is the philosophy of quick cure that is very popular with our "instant" world. We want what we want and we want it NOW! If you want quick relief at any cost, then you will not have a healthy body. Our apporach is dedicated to finding the root cause/s of your health problem and to work with the body until we return each organ, gland, and system of the body back to normal. And, understand, that can take time.

DETOX SYMPTOMS

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

CLICK PIC

It is also possible that, as we remove one layer after another, certain negative symptoms can show up. This can be common in natural health care, and has several different names: retracing, de-toxins, healing crisis. It is basically a detoxifying process that the body has to go through in order to get well. That is why we will often recommend different types of cleansing diets to help the body quickly flush out these stored toxins so that it can get on with the process of healing, and so that the process can be undergone with the least amount of discomfort possible.

Stevia users have long insisted that the leaves (usually ground and used in tea bag form) and concentrate reduced their appetite and their craving for sweets and fatty foods, thus being a very effective aid in weight loss.

Research now underway suggests that natural Stevia may be beneficial for people who are overweight. It is believed that a defect exists between the stomach and the hypothalamus in many people who are overweight, which fails to "turn off' hunger sensations when the person is actually full. It appears, from the initial research, that Stevia may correct this defect and actually reset the hunger mechanism, thus "turning off' hunger sensations when satiation has occurred.

People who use Stevia Concentrate to help balance blood sugar levels have reported that they have found 30-50 drops of the Stevia concentrate, taken two or three times a day to be useful in helping to manage their condition. Some doctors have recommended 6-8 drops six times a day.

People looking for help in managing weight, blood sugar, blood pressure and simply nourishing the pancreas, as well as 'lust naturally" reducing their craving for sweets and fats are enthusiastic about Stevia .. Some experts suggest that Stevia is destined to be known as one of the most important nutritional discoveries of our century.

According to the Mayo Clinic, diabetics can safely use artificial sweeteners such as Stevia because they don't affect blood sugar levels. An article at Stevia.com says Stevia actually helps to regulate blood sugar, reducing cravings: "Hunger sensations are lessened when 10 or 15 drops are taken 20 minutes before meals."

Stevia weight loss and appetite control program.

Based on the following information I would recommend utilizing Stevia drops at 3 to 50 drops 10 to 20 min. before meals. In my opinion this would be like eating a box of chocolates before you sit down to a meal, most of us would not eat much after that. So most people will find doing this regularly will cause a nice pace of weight loss.

This routine can have a significant effect on appetite even putting a drop on your tongue can help suppress appetite when needed.

In my opinion Stevia is one of the safest sugar substitutes on the planet. Now it's important to understand that you could be allergic to anything, I mean absolutely anything. The Stevia allergy which is very rare can't be ruled out. The chances are very unlikely you will have this issues with Stevia.

A few years ago, Dr. J.M. Holder researched effects of auricular therapy (a form of acupuncture stimulation to the ear - a technique we have used here at Keefe Clinic since 1980). You may have read about that study in the papers then - it indicated that auricular therapy was the most effective therapy for drug addictions of the 178 government-approved therapies at that time! This study was released in the early 1990's and has started to revolutionize drug addiction programs across the country.

This study was headed by Dr. J.M. Holder, D.C., M.D., Ph.D. He practices chiropractic, teaches at a medical school, and conducts research. He was the first American physician to win the Albert Schweitzer Prize in Medicine, and is in line to receive more awards due to his most recent research.

As he studied the effects of auricular therapy on drug addictions and the physical causes behind the addictive personality, he found that by stimulating these acupuncture points in the ear, he could enhance what is known as an "award cascade" effect from the limbic system.

Now to his next study: Dr. Holder reasoned that the effects demonstrated in the first study described above dealing with problems with the limbic system could be tied in to the effects that subluxations have on the nervous system. He knew that the limbic system is not just a compartment hidden in the center of the brain, but it also extends down the "dorsal horn" of the spinal column. He decided to test to see what Chiropractic adjustment intervention could do with this particular system of the nervous system.

In 1994, the Holder Research Institute established that only vertebrates have an opiate reception site, brain reward system. This means that the vertebral subluxation complex is the hallmark of insult to any vertebrate's ability to express the state of well-being to its fullest potential. If messages from the brain are interrupted from their expression to itself and the rest of the body by vertebral subluxations, the vertebrate necessarily will not have the fullest quality of life. What is called the "brain reward cascade" is a scientific model that has the vertebral motor unit as its cornmon denominator which provides an understanding to the neurophysiologi-cal mechanism on how the meso-Limbic system expresses a state of well-being. Therefore, a subluxation-free spine is mandatory to express one's greatest potential.

Dr. Holder went before the Research Committee at the where he teaches to present his research ideas. They approved his study, and conducted it at the largest addiction hospital in Miami, Florida. This study divided addicts into three groups: group one receive regular counseling therapy that is common to all addiction centers. Group two received that therapy plus Chiropractic adjustments, and Group three received standard addiction therapy plus "sham" Chiropractic treatments. That means that these patients were really not adjusted.

At the end of that study, the results were astonishing, even to Dr. Holder. After compiling all the data, he found that the combination of Chiropractic adjustments with counseling therapy approach to addiction and compulsive disorders produced far better results than any other test results for any other government-approved technique now available. His conclusion: for the 180 different addiction disorder techniques that have been tested, Chiropractic now proves to be the most effective, even more effective than the use of auricular therapy found previously so helpful.

This means that: Chiropractic care, coupled with proper nutrition, electro-stimulation of points in the ear, and counseling is the best help currently available for individuals who have addictive-compulsive disorders.
