Winter time  humidity is a big issue. As the weather turns colder and the heaters start working 24/7 then the indoor air will start drying out.

Studies have shown that dry air has four main effects on the human body:

  • Breathing dry air is a potential health hazard which can cause such respiratory ailments as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and nosebleeds, or general dehydration since body fluids are depleted during respiration.
  • Skin moisture evaporation can cause skin irritations and eye itching.
  • Irritative effects, such as static electricity which causes mild shocks when metal is touched, are common when the air moisture is low.
  • The "apparent temperature" of the air is lower than what the thermometer indicates, and the body "feels" colder.

As your body fights the dry air you start to use up your vitamin A stores. This enhances the dry skin and sinus problems as well as weakens your immune system. It is important that you have a humidity gauge in each bedroom and a cool mist humidifier to combat the dry air. I recommend the ultrasonic humidifiers as they put the most water in the air.

Some Of The Physical Effects Of Dry Air

Dry skin, Chapped lips, Clogged sinuses, Itchy skin, Dry throat coughs, Cracked nasal membranes, Increased risk of bacteria infection, Aggravated asthma & allergy symptoms

You may also notice these changes around your home:

  • Woodwork and furniture shrinkage
  • Hardwood floor separation
  • Piano goes out of tune
  • Wallpaper peels at the edges
  • Drawers loosen
  • Moldings gap
  • Collectibles shrink, warp and crack
  • Static Electricity increases

Drier air causes sinuses to dry and crack, making people more susceptible to winter colds and flu viruses. In fact, this change from higher outside relative humidity to lower indoor relative humidity in the winter is a significant contributing factor in the spread of colds and flus. By maintaining the proper level of humidity indoors, you reduce illness in the winter. Studies have shown that the body's immune system will function better when the relative humidity in a home is between 45%-65%.

Pneumococcus, staphylococcus, and streptococcus bacteria die up to 20 times faster at a relative humidity between 45% and 55%, than above 70% or below 20%. Dehydration can also cause negative health effects. Symptoms of dehydration include dry skin, chronic joint and muscle pain, raspy throat, sinus and nasal pain, sore eyes, a lack of mental concentration, and a decrease in the body's immune system.

The most comfortable relative humidity for the human body 45-65%RH
Ideal relative humidity for prophylactic and curative purposes 40-50%RH
Computer and telecom apparatuses 45-65%RH
Furniture and musical instruments 40-60%RH
Libraries (books), art galleries and museums 40-60%RH

Quick Fix 1: Get Steamy

You can also enhance the steam you breathe with sinus-clearing essential oils. Once or twice a day, add five drops of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), or sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oils (or a combination) to a large bowl of steaming-hot water, suggests Sylvia Goldfarb, Ph.D., of Wyncote, Pa., author of Allergy Relief (Avery Penguin Putnam, 2000). Drape a towel over your head and the bowl, and breathe deeply for 10 minutes. You'll feel relief within that time.

To treat acute sinusitis, substitute tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) and repeat the sinus steam three to four times daily. Tea tree oil's powerful antibacterial properties fight the bacteria that cause many infections," says Karen Barnes, N.D., a naturopath in Burlington, Ontario, and author of Naturopathic First Aid (Quarry Press, 2001). Your symptoms should clear up within a few days.

Quick Fix 2: Flush Your Sinuses

Rinsing your sinuses with saltwater helps them drain mucus. Studies show that this significantly reduced symptoms like pain and inflammation in more than 2/3 of sinusitis sufferers. Heatley says recommending nasal irrigation to her patients cut the number of sinus surgeries she performed in half.

To rinse your sinuses, use a neti pot, a small teapot-like device sold at most natural food stores. Combine three parts non-iodized salt and one part baking soda, and add 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture to 1/2 cup of warm water in the pot. This solution matches your body's salinity, and baking soda makes it less irritating to your sinuses.

Lean over a sink and insert the spout of the pot into your left nostril. Tilt your head and the pot to the right and let the solution flow out your right nostril. Exhale forcefully through both nostrils and repeat on the other side. Repeat as needed.

Quick Fix 3: Eat Spicy Food

The zing of certain spices opens clogged sinuses and promotes drainage. As condiments, use hot salsas or chutneys that contain chiles, or sprinkle cayenne pepper on your food, recommends Goldfarb or use wasabi.

IN THE NEWS: Things to Know About Restless Legs Syndrome If you’ve ever been reading a book or watching TV in the evening and felt a strange, powerful urge to move your legs, you may have experienced the characteristic symptom of restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Willis-Ekbom disease. People may variously describe the feeling as creepy-crawly, jittery, or electrical. The hallmark of RLS is “the uncontrollable urge to move the leg, that comes on at rest [while awake],” says Suzanne Bertisch, M.D., a sleep physician at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and an assistant professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. Symptoms of restless legs syndrome may affect as many as 7 to 8 percent of all U.S. adults, with 2 to 3 percent of people having cases severe enough to require medication. Yet there’s a lot experts still don't know about RLS, and it can be tricky to treat. For Restless Legs Syndrome Awareness Day, here are five things you should know about this condition. Drugs for RLS Can Have Serious Side Effects so what is the alternative? Regular moderate exercise can reduce symptoms in some people, Not getting enough sleep can also trigger restless legs symptoms. Antihistamines are thought to make RLS worse, as much as 43% of RLS is associated with insufficient iron levels, 89% of RLS-associated conditions have been associated with inflammatory changes which also can cause iron levels to drop. Ask for an anti-inflammatory diet at the front desk.

WELLNESS: Don't want dementia? Turn off your TV-- A healthy lifestyle builds brain resilience and really WILL keep dementia at bay - even if you're predicted to get it - and here are the tips to follow, reveals largest study of its kind-- Alzheimer's disease really can be avoided by following a healthy lifestyle - even if you're predisposed to get it, the largest study of its kind has revealed. Exercising, monitoring blood pressure and watching less TV are the three key factors that will help build brain resilience and keep the disease at bay.    Researchers at the University of California in Irvine began the '90+ Study' in 2003. Tests were carried out on the 1,700 participants every six months to monitor their cognitive ability. Post-mortems were conducted upon their death. Astonishingly half of the dementia-free patients had the hallmark brain plaques - which lead to memory loss and dementia - when they died. Meanwhile half of the dementia patients did develop symptoms of memory loss - even without having these build-ups in their brain. Professor Claudia Kawas, lead researcher, suggested the reason for such 'cognitive resilience' in those who should have developed dementia but remained free of it was down to a healthy lifestyle.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: A Better Life With Chiropractic Why take your kids to the chiropractor? For many of the same reasons every adult should be visiting a chiropractor on a regular basis. Plain and simple, your quality of life improves with chiropractic care. Look no further than a study published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, which evaluated nearly 900 children ages 8-17 who received chiropractic spinal adjustments and related therapies commonly provided by DCs. Quality of life, measured in terms of depression, anxiety and interference with daily activities due to pain as part of the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS)-25 assessment tool, was significantly higher in children under the care of a chiropractor. Specifically, children were significantly less likely to report any symptoms of depression, anxiety or pain interference following a trial of chiropractic care. The researchers also accounted for variables that could have influenced the outcomes, such as number of visits, pain level, motivation for care, etc. Give your children (and yourself) a better life with chiropractic. The sooner your kids experience the health and wellness benefits of regular chiropractic care, the better. After all, what parent doesn't want their children to grow up with as little depression, anxiety and pain as possible? Talk to your chiropractor for more information.

IN THE NEWS: Researchers Uncover Link Between Immune Function And Osteoarthritic Pain And Progression The immune system plays a pivotal role in the amount of pain and disease progression experienced by patients with osteoarthritis (OA), McMaster University researchers have found. This discovery could lead to new strategies for improving joint pain management and immune function in older adults with arthritis. The study, published in the medical journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, found that monocytes, the white blood cells necessary to regulate immune responses, were more activated and pro-inflammatory in women with osteoarthritis, and that elevated inflammation and body mass index were associated with this increased activation. When compared with a control group, this combination created a perfect storm – one that was found to increase the pain and progression of knee osteoarthritis. The study involved 22 women with OA, and 22 women of the same age without OA.NOTE: Monocytes are usually elevated in response to bacteria and parasites. Recently study show that rheumatoid arthritis can be triggered in some cases by a bacteria in milk. Nutritional formulas that enhance immune function allow for the body to eliminate these microorganisms and begin the healing process. Detoxification, anti-inflammatory diet are just some of the things that can be helpful in health recovery.

WELLNESS: Chuck Norris Focuses Attention on Heavy Metal Risks After Enhanced MRI Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a study allowing your physician to see detailed images of your organs and tissues using a large magnet and radio waves. Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) may be prescribed to enhance the image but the heavy metal gadolinium is known to deposit in your brain, bone and organs. The FDA acknowledges the metal may be found in your tissues for years but claims there is no known effect, despite the rising number of people suffering from kidney damage, cognitive dysfunction and muscle wasting. Strategies you may consider if an enhanced MRI is absolutely necessary include optimizing your gut and nutrition, eating fermented foods and using a sauna to aid detoxification. After undergoing three MRIs with GBCAs to evaluate her rheumatoid arthritis, Gena O'Kelley, the wife of American film icon Chuck Norris, began experiencing severe physical symptoms that began with a burning sensation in her skin. She described it as if there was acid burning her skin, slowly covering her body.  She reports that she visited the emergency room five or six nights in a row, while doctors ran multiple tests for ALS, MS, cancer and Parkinson's disease. However, it was O'Kelley who made the connection between her burning skin, contracted arm and cognitive issues and the multiple MRIs she had undergone. She told Full Measure: "When we got to the hospital in Houston this last time, and I'm so bad and I said, listen, I am sober enough in my thinking right now, because I had such brain issues going on, I said I'm only going to be able to tell you this one time and I need you to listen to me very closely. I have been poisoned with gadolinium or by gadolinium and we don't have much time to figure out how to get this out of my body or I am going to die." After five months of treatment in China and then in a clinic in Nevada, O'Kelley was able to return home to her seven children for continued treatment by a physician in Houston. Norris shared their tax return records documenting $2 million over three years in uninsured medical expenses to help O'Kelley return to health. Now Norris is suing 11 medical companies for the part they played in not warning the couple and others of the dangers of using a GBCA for MRI contrast.

CHIROPRACTIC: IMMUNE FUNCTION studies of chiropractic patients have shown interesting differences with those patients that have ongoing chiropractic care and just the average person off the street. One of those differences we have discussed in a past newsletter about DNA repair. Those who have gotten regular chiropractic adjustments have a higher level of a chemical that’s involved in repair of DNA. Our DNA is traumatized hundreds if not thousands of times during the day and repair of DNA is essential in longevity and health in general. Many years ago an immunologist studying chiropractic patients who receive regular care were found to have an immune system operating 400% better than the average person on the street. The nervous system regulates and controls every system in your body and misalignments depress function including immune function. When you receive an adjustment you improve nervous system control and coordination over your immune system. Keeping a healthy immune system requires a clean diet, plenty of fluids, exercise, proper rest and a healthy nervous system. Increase your immune function through regular chiropractic care.

IN THE NEWS:. 5 Natural Strategies That May Help Protect Your Healthy Vision… Quit smoking, if you currently do. Smoking ramps up free radical production throughout your body, and puts you at risk for less-than-optimal health in many ways. If you want healthy vision for your whole life, you cannot afford to risk less-than-optimal eye health with cigarettes. Care for your cardiovascular system. High blood pressure can cause damage to the miniscule blood vessels on your retina, obstructing free blood flow. Normalize your blood sugar. Excessive sugar in your blood can pull fluid from the lens of your eye, affecting your ability to focus. And, it can damage the blood vessels in your retina, also obstructing blood flow. Eat plenty of fresh, dark green leafy vegetables, especially kale. Your mother was right – eat your vegetables. Studies have shown that a diet rich in dark leafy greens helps support eye health. And that those with the highest consumption of carotenoid-rich vegetables, especially ones rich in lutein and zeaxanthin, had increased vision health. Consume omega-3 rich foods such as fresh-caught salmon – or supplement with krill oil. A study published in the August 2001 issue of Archives of Ophthalmology found that consuming omega-3 fatty acids was protective of your healthy vision. However – especially if you’re a Baby Boomer or older – you may want to hedge your bets on wise supplementation to help protect your eyes’ healthy function. If you’re younger, prudent supplementation while also addressing the five natural strategies listed above can offer your eyes important support. There are some incredible newcomers on the scene of protecting and supporting your eye health:Two new ingredients – black currant and astaxanthin – recently made their way to the cutting edge of the eye health world. And they’re far more powerful than lutein, zeaxanthin, or bilberry. Scientists discovered that black currant contains anthocyanins, supporting eye energy.* And astaxanthin is also a strong antioxidant.*

WELLNESS: Don't Risk Your Health (or the Health of Your Child) A healthy pregnancy and a healthy child – who doesn't want that? And yet many women put themselves and their developing child at risk, often without knowing it. You deserve better. Your child deserves better. Here are two of the health issues your can help avoid based on the lifestyle choices you make:

Heart defects linked to ADHD drugs: Use of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drugs during pregnancy increasing the risk that the child will develop a cardiac malformation (heart defect, in laypersons terms) . Exposure to methylphenidate after the first trimester increased the risk by 28 percent, according to research summarized in JAMA Psychiatry. Findings emphasize the need to better understand the safety issues surrounding use of ADHD drugs, particularly during pregnancy, and explore potential drug-free options for treating ADHD. Obesity and fetal growth patterns: Obese women are more likely to have unusually large babies, even if the mother's obesity isn't causing health complications. The result, according to the study in JAMA Pediatrics: a large, heavy baby, particularly a baby with a large head circumference, and larger thigh and arm bones, compared to babies born to normal-weight mothers. Larger babies may complicate the delivery process and require Cesarean delivery, which can risk the health of both mother and child. Fortunately, in the vast majority of cases obesity can be managed with proper diet, exercise and other lifestyle changes. If you're expecting a child or planning to conceive, talk to your doctor early in the process about everything you can do (and avoid doing) to ensure a healthy childbirth for mother and child.

CHIROPRACTIC: Overview and History The term “chiropractic” combines the Greek words cheir (hand) and praxis (practice) to describe a treatment done by hand. Hands-on therapy—especially adjustment of the spine—is central to chiropractic care. Chiropractic is based on the relationship between the body’s structure (primarily that of the spine) and its function (as coordinated by the nervous system) affects health. Spinal adjustment is a core treatment in chiropractic care.  Chiropractors commonly use other treatments in addition to spinal manipulation including nutrition, diet management, acupuncture, physical therapy, allergy therapy. What the Science Says Researchers have studied spinal manipulation for a number of conditions ranging from back, neck, and shoulder pain to asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, and headaches. Much of the research has focused on low-back pain, and has shown that spinal adjustments benefit people with this condition. A 2010 review of scientific evidence on manual therapies for a range of conditions concluded that spinal adjustments helpful for several conditions in addition to back pain, including migraine and cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches, neck pain, upper- and lower-extremity joint conditions, and whiplash-associated disorders. Chiropractic colleges accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) offer Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree programs. (CCE is the agency certified by the U.S. Department of Education to accredit chiropractic colleges in the United States.) Admission to a chiropractic college requires a minimum of 90 semester hour credits of undergraduate study, mostly in the sciences. Chiropractic training is a 4-year academic program that includes both classroom work and direct experience caring for patients.

IN THE NEWS: New antibiotics announced to fight superbug infections Scientists in the United States have developed a vital tool in the battle against superbugs by re-engineering a decades-old antibiotic. A modified version of the antibiotic vancomycin is believed to be much more effective at fighting Enterococci bacteria, which is found in hospitals and can cause dangerous wound and blood infections. The drug, which has been used for 60 years, is described as an antibiotic of last resort, used only after treatment with other antibiotics has failed. But some infections have become resistant even to vancomycin in its current form. The research team, from The Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California, described the new drug as "magical" in its strength, the UK Press Association reported. It could be years, however, before the completion of clinical trials needed to turn the lab discovery into a mass-produced medicine, Dr. Andrew Edwards, a lecturer in molecular microbiology at Imperial College, London.  Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people become infected with bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics and at least 23,000 people die each year as a direct result of these infections. Many more people die from other conditions that were complicated by an antibiotic-resistant infection. Warning: the cause for superbugs is the overutilization of antibiotics. When this new antibiotic finishes trials and if it does appear to be effective what’s going to prevent the overutilization of this to produce even more powerful superbugs? NOTHING! It’s important that you take responsibility for your own health and utilize natural approaches with infections. The vast majority of infections can be addressed naturally without producing superbugs. Industry and the medical profession have shown themselves incapable of controlling the overuse of antibiotics, you must protect yourself and your family by utilizing natural approaches first.

WELLNESS: Uses of castor oil Castor oil is made by pressing the seeds of the castor plant (Ricinus communis). It’s a triglyceride that is composed of fatty acids, 90 percent of which is ricinoleic acid, the primary healing ingredient in castor oil. Aside from rubbing or massaging it directly on your skin, you can also make a castor oil pack see keefeclinic.com.  1.Safe and natural laxative. A 2010 study highlighted how castor oil packs helped to effectively reduce constipation among the elderly. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) actually deems this oil "generally regarded as safe and effective" for use as a stimulant laxative. Oral ingestion of castor oil can "purge" the digestive tract within two to five hours. However,

remember to take it in the appropriate dose. Adults can take 1 to 2 tablespoons, while children 2 to 12 years old should be given only 1 to 2 teaspoons. Infants below 2 years old are not advised to take more than a teaspoon at a time. When giving it to children, try mixing it in freshly squeezed juice so it becomes more palatable. 2.Muscle pain relief. Rub it on your muscles after an intense workout to promote blood circulation and relieve soreness. Mix it with peppermint oil or Roman chamomile oil for extra healing and soothing effect. 3.Alleviates joint pain. The ricinoleic acid in castor oil has a decongestant effect on the lymphatic system, which is responsible for collecting waste from your tissues and carrying it to your bloodstream to be eliminated. If the lymphatic system is not working properly, such as in people with arthritis, joint pain occurs. Massaging castor oil on the joints can help ease the congestion and jumpstart your lymphatic system. A 2009 study published in Phytotherapy Research supports this, and reveals that castor oil helps relieve pain among patients with knee osteoarthritis. 4.Helps treat fungal diseases. It’s said that castor oil is just as effective as anti-fungal drugs in treating common infections like ringworm, jock itch (tinea cruris) and athlete’s foot. Simply warm the oil, apply onto the affected area before bedtime and leave it on overnight. Repeat for a week or until the infection has disappeared completely.

IN THE NEWS: Wide Awake in the Electronic Age: Our Kids' Sleep Habits Are Suffering Smartphones, tablets and everything in between – chances are high that if your child's over the age of 6 (and in some cases, even younger these days), they're spending a considerable (read: unhealthy) amount of time engaged with portable electronic devices. At the same time, we're finding that kids are suffering from sleep deprivation in terms of time spent asleep and quality of sleep enjoyed. Is there a connection? Yes, say researchers who reviewed various studies on the topic – and the news is even worse than you might imagine. After reviewing 20 studies, researchers found that kids who used portable electronic devices near bedtime had more difficulty falling or staying asleep, and experienced poor daytime function because of sleepiness. Device use also contributed to lack of sleep compared to non-use: less than 10 hours per night for children and less than nine hours for teens. But here's the kicker: Even kids who didn't use the devices, but had access to them, still experienced shorter sleep times. Children with bedtime access to devices close to bedtime three or more times a week also experienced less sleep and lower quality of sleep compared to children with less or no device access. Researchers speculate that access, even without use, can exert an influence on sleep because children are thinking about different aspects of the device, such as text messaging (e.g., "Has someone responded to that message I sent earlier?").

WELLNESS: Exercise: The Key to Better Grades? For better or worse, we live in an increasingly competitive world, which means when it comes to education, grades matter – big time. While they don't necessarily reflect the learning process, effort expended or lessons learned, grades remain an important indicator of knowledge, critical thinking and other variables that translate well into adulthood. And of course, when applying for college, few application reviewers consider the straight D student, even if that student gave 100 percent in the classroom every day. With all the tutoring clubs, online support groups and other tools at students' / parents' disposal these days, it's encouraging to know a simple grade-booster exists that doesn't require money or even a great deal of extra time: exercise. Research suggests children who exercise more perform better in several academic subjects and are more attentive compared to their less-active peers. The most recent study to examine this association reviewed 26 studies involving more than 10,000 children ages 4-13. Results, published in the peer-reviewed research journal Pediatrics, showed that increased physical activity, particularly physical education, improved various aspects of academic achievement , "especially mathematics-related skills, reading, and composite scores." Students who exercised more also appeared to stay more focused on their schoolwork than students who exercised less. In the studies analyzed, researchers increased physical activity levels through expanded recess, afters-school sports or active breaks between lessons throughout the school day – which also may suggest academic performance is related to whether kids get breaks from their long days sitting in the classroom. Definitely food for thought for the education system. From a parent standpoint, teaching your kids to exercise and encouraging them to take active breaks at home, particularly while doing schoolwork or studying for quizzes / tests, could help their academic performance – and will certainly help avoid the health perils of a sedentary lifestyle. Talk to your doctor for more information.

CHIROPRACTIC: Kids and Chiropractic Care “Chiropractic care for my child? Why? His back doesn’t bother him.” How often chiropractors have encountered parents who appreciate the importance of regular checkups for their child’s teeth, hearing, eyes and ears but draw a blank when it comes to a spinal checkup. In fact, a spinal check up could be one of the most important checkups your child will ever have. Your child’s spine is his/her lifeline because running through it is the spinal cord, containing billions of nerve fibers that send messages and energy from the brain to every part of their body. If there is blockage of any of the nerves along the spinal cord, any nerve damage at all, then a state of ” dis-ease” will develop. Dis-ease means dis-harmony in the body that will cause generalized weakening of your child’s body, lowered resistance to disease, and consequent body malfunction and sickness. Blockage of nerves in the spinal column are usually caused by tiny fixations and misalignments of the spinal vertebrae that are called vertebral subluxations. Only chiropractors are trained to detect and correct subluxations, much like only a dentist finds cavities. Subluxations can be cause by the birth process, the very physical childhood activities of running and jumping, falls and accidents. Because your children (and you) may have spinal subluxations and not know it, all children need periodic spinal check ups. A recent study of 332 children showed that chronic ear infection sufferers under chiropractic care had no more infections in 80% of the cases (JCCP, Vol.2, No.2 1997). The Chiropractic Approach By releasing stress on the nervous system with very gentle and safe chiropractic adjustments, the body will work more effectively and be able to express better health. Why not include chiropractic spinal checkups for you and your children? It may be the best move for your family’s health you’ll ever make.

IN THE NEWS: CDC warns parents not to give children antibiotics to treat common cold, flu "Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the common cold, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections," read a recent CDC advisory on Facebook. "Taking antibiotics can also have harmful side effects for you or your child." While parents might be tempted to seek out antibiotics during this year's supposedly more severe than usual flu season, taking the bacteria-killing medication will not cure the infection, stop others from catching it, nor make flu victims feel better. In fact, needlessly taking antibiotics will kill healthy bacteria and may lead to harmful side effects that could send a child to the hospital. According to the CDC, antibiotics are the most common cause of emergency hospital visits for children experiencing negative reactions to drugs. In addition, needlessly using antibiotics can make the body more resistant to the medication, making it harder to treat an infection. In total, the CDC estimates that 30 percent of all antibiotics prescribed to patients seeking medical treatment without hospital admission are unnecessary.

WELLNESS: Empathy: Caring for Others Is Good for You  Empathy, the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, so to speak, and understand their feelings and point of view, is a character trait that may benefit society and individuals in multiple ways. Empathy training has been found to reduce stress levels among medical students facing intense emotional encounters with patients, for example. While many parents try to instill empathetic qualities in their children, there’s growing research that empathy has deep neurological roots in humans. Empathy has complex neurological underpinnings that control the way our brains help us to care about other people. Humans have “mirror neurons” that react to others’ emotions and reproduce them; a deficit in mirror neuron receptors has been suggested as an explanation for narcissism and neurotic behaviors. Researchers found that empathy was positively associated with treatment adherence, patient satisfaction and reduced dental anxiety, sentiments that seem to be echoed among medical practitioners. Among adolescents, empathy may even go hand in hand with future success, according to licensed professional counselor Ugo Uche: “Teenagers who are empathetic tend to be more purpose driven and they intentionally succeed in their academics not because they are looking to make good grades, but in most subjects their goal is to understand the subject material and to utilize the knowledge as one of their ever-increasing tools …Teenagers who are more empathetic do a much better job in embracing failure, because there is little ego involved in their tasks, and setbacks while disappointing are rarely seen as failures, but rather as a learning experience about an approach that does not work for the task at hand.” Practicing empathy may help you relieve stress, strengthen your relationships and have a more satisfying work life.

I don't keep up with drug sales let alone the actions and side effects of all the latest drugs. But I would think antacids must be making pharmaceutical companies literally billions of dollars each year. (The January 8, 2001 issue of Business Week mentions that Priolsec is the top selling prescription drug in the world. It earns Astra Zeneca (the drug’s maker) 6 billion dollars per year.)

One of the reasons that antacids sell so well is that they stop the pain in 60-70% of the cases. (A recent online survey of over 4200 patients taking Priolosec.) If you're troubled with chronic acid reflux and you can take a pill and all the pain just disappears, it seems like you're doing the right thing, doesn't it? Before you answer that let me explain the digestive process and then ask you that question again.

Digestion is literally a miracle. All the different types of foods and yet your body knows the exact enzymes and the correct amount to properly breakdown each food to its simplest component. Complex carbohydrates are broken down into simple sugars, proteins are broken down into their individual amino acids and fats and oils are reduced to their individual fatty acids. And then the process of properly absorbing these nutrients along with the vitamins, minerals and enzymes plus other things that were still learning about. If you eat different foods you get different kinds and amounts of enzymes to digest them.

As you chew your food you help break it down for your stomach as well as blend it with saliva which helps start the whole process. As the food enters the stomach it starts to churn and release digestive enzymes. Hydrocloric acid (HCl) is one of the most important enzymes that the stomach releases. The amount of HCl that leaves the stomach with the food entering the small intestines stimulate fluids from the liver and gallbladder as well as enzymes from the pancreas to complete the digestive process. It is essential that the right amount of HCl enters the small intestines to begin a wavelike motion called peristalsis that help move the food throughout the intestines. If the level of HCl is less than ideal then every other step in the digestive process is compromised.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

It's like when you have a row of dominos stacked together and push the first one over a chain reaction happens. Without HCl the rest of the digestive process is severely compromised. If you don't produce the right amount of enzymes then you cannot breakdown your foods properly. If you don’t break your foods down properly you can not absorbe nutrients that your body requires. Studies of individuals who have used antacids over a long peiord of time find evidence of malnutrition. Doesn't that make sense? What do antacids do? They severely reduced if not completely block the release of HCl. Remember the chain of dominos.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

When you consistently reduced the amount of HCl that is released from your stomach that causes a series of changes in the lining of your stomach. A healthy stomach has a mucous lining that protects the stomach from its own acids. When the body senses that this coating has been reduced it automatically reduces the amount of HCl it secretes. As this happens the stomach will churn more to help break down the foods. After a series of processes, this increase of abnormal stomach contractions can force what little bit of HCl you produce up into the esophagus.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

This can cause a burning or painful sensation from your stomach up into the back of your throat. This is called acid reflux. This condition is rarely due to the overproduction of HCl. If this problem is not corrected over a lifetime the chronic inflammation to the cells can lead to cancer. But be forewarned, the chronic suppression of HCl with antacids will lead to incompletely digested food irritating your intestines and increasing your chance for colon cancer. Usually the mechanism I described above is leading to the inappropriate release of HCl into the esophagus. It is true eliminating the amount of HCl you produce will relieve symptoms. It's also true that these drugs will relieve you of the normal digestive process.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Now the main question is this- is the choice between symptom relieve with drugs or suffering pain with each meal? No! By properly correcting the dysfunction within the digestive system you can, not only restore proper function without drugs, you can also overcome your acid reflux.

There are several principles to good digestion. Completely chewing your food, not combining proteins with sweet fruits, don't eat too quickly, eat foods that are consistent with your body and blood type, too much dairy with a meal could interfere with the digestive process and watch the junk food. Fiber helps move the food through your digestive system.

A lot of time patients with digestive problems also notice that they have discomfort between the shoulder blades. Neurologically this is very significant. The nerves between the fourth thoracic and eight thoracic are some of the most important controlling nerves to your digestive system. If you carry nerve pressure in your upper back then your digestive system is most likely compromised. Now remember, you can have nerve pressure without back symptoms, though alot of patients with acid reflux know what I'm talking about when I talk about discomfort between their shoulder blades.

IN THE NEWS: Children exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop arthritis as adults, groundbreaking study claims Children who are exposed to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop arthritis later in life, a groundbreaking study claims. Research has previously found a link between active smokers and rheumatoid arthritis, claiming female smokers nearly double their risk for the condition. Now experts claim there is also an increased risk of developing the disease if a smoker was around second-hand smoke as a child. French medical experts reported there is a 79 percent increase in the hazard ratio for children exposed to passive smoking. This is the first study to suggest there is a connection between the painful condition and early exposure to second-hand smoke. Smokers who are exposed to cigarette smoke during their childhood increase their risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis, a groundbreaking French study claims. Results of the study was presented to the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Spain. Around 1.5 million Americans have rheumatoid arthritis and women are three times more likely than men to develop this form of the condition. The common auto-immune disease results in inflammation of joints, causing pain, discomfort and the gradual destruction of cartilage and bone. Research dating back to 2013 has found the connection between women smokers and rheumatoid arthritis. Professor Raphaèle Seror, the study's lead author from University Hospitals of South Paris, said: 'Our study highlights the importance of avoiding any tobacco environment in children, especially in those with a family history of RA.' The study followed 70,598 women who are all smokers, born between 1925 and 1950, from 1990 to 2014.

WELLNESS: Cherries — A Potent Super Food Sweet cherries are a great source of potassium, which is important for maintaining normal blood pressure, and contain a number of potent anticancer agents. Tart cherries have been shown to improve athletic performance, endurance and recovery, reducing post-exercise pain and inflammation. Tart cherries also help relieve and prevent arthritis and gout. If you live in a sub-tropical area, growing acerola cherry trees in your backyard can provide you with this potent super food for several months of the year. Relying on commercially-available cherries will limit them to just a few weeks a year. Interestingly, cherries contain natural melatonin, a powerful antioxidant and free radical scavenger that helps "cool down" excess inflammation and associated oxidative stress. It also plays a vital role in sleep, cancer prevention and general regeneration. Based on daily environmental signals of light and darkness, your pineal gland has evolved to produce and secrete melatonin to help you sleep. Research suggests that consuming tart cherry juice increases your melatonin levels, thereby improving time in bed, total sleep time and sleep efficiency. Reduce your risk of stroke. Tart cherries activate peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR) in tissues, which help regulate genes involved in the metabolism of fat and glucose. PPAR activation has a beneficial effect on blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Lower your risk of dementia. Inflammation and oxidative stress are associated with an increased risk for dementia. The polyphenols in tart cherries effectively combat both, thereby lowering your risk of cognitive decline. As explained in one recent study,27 “[P]olyphenols from dark-colored fruits can reduce stress-mediated signaling in BV-2 mouse microglial cells, leading to decreases in nitric oxide (NO) production and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression. [T]art cherries — which improved cognitive behavior in aged rats … may be effective in reducing inflammatory and OS-mediated signals” Lower your risk of colon cancer by substantially reducing formation of heterocyclic aromatic amines (HAAs) when added to hamburger patties. It also slows meat spoilage.28 HAAs are potent carcinogenic compounds created when food is charred, and have been linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. Hamburger patties with just over 11 percent tart cherries in them contained anywhere from 69 to 78.5 percent less HAAs after cooking, compared to regular patties.

CHIROPRACTIC: Balance and Brain Health Let’s investigate the relationship of balance and how it relates to the health of the brain! A 2014 study published in the journal Stroke found that difficulty balancing on one leg (eyes open) for at least 20 seconds is a possible sign of brain damage in an otherwise healthy person. In other words, there appears to be an association between poor balance and an increased risk for small blood vessel damage and reduced cognitive function (memory, association, the ability to communicate well, stay on task, etc.) in people who appear to be healthy. The authors state, “Our study found that the ability to balance on one leg is an important test for brain health.” In this study, 841 women and 546 men (average age was 67 years old) were asked to stand on one leg for up to 60 seconds with their eyes open. Each participant repeated the exam twice and researchers recorded the best time. Next, each participant had a brain MRI to assess for small vessel disease and completed a computer based-questionnaire to measure cognitive function. Researchers found an association between the presence of small vessel disease and the inability to stand on one leg with their eyes open for more than 20 seconds. When the small arteries in the brain are damaged and lose their flexibility, blood flow is interrupted to the brain depriving oxygen to the tissue, something that is more likely to happen with advancing age. This is a very common problem, and it usually improves with balance-challenging exercises. These exercises include simply standing on one leg while in the kitchen, watching TV, standing in line… you name it! Take advantage of your standing time and do some balance challenging exercises! Of course, if you’re wobbly and find yourself “windmilling” to maintain your balance, do this in a safe environment—in the corner of a room, for example. To make the exercise even more challenging, try standing on a pillow or a folded up towel and/or shut your eyes to REALLY make your brain work! Your doctor of chiropractic can also train you on the use of a rocker board, wobble board, and gym ball for adding more fun and are very effective ways to improve your proprioceptive skills.

IN THE NEWS:  DID YOU KNOW? Doctors used to think that if they drained a sick person's blood it would purge the "evil" infection or disease right out of the body, but all that did was make the ill person much weaker, unable to fight off whatever was invading their body, and the patient was then highly likely to lose the battle for life, and in less time. Research using polls and questionnaires continue to show that 3 of every 4 doctors and scientists would refuse chemotherapy for themselves due to its devastating effects on the entire body and the immune system, and because of its extremely low success rate. On top of that, only 2 to 4% of all cancers even respond to chemotherapy or prove to be "life extending," yet it is prescribed across the board for just about every kind of cancer.

The patient was an adopted three-year-old girl who was born at 28 weeks weighing 2 pounds, 5 ounces by a woman who had a history of prior drug abuse. After two years of abnormal behavior and receiving multiple "autism" diagnoses from medical doctors, her parents decided to take her in for a thorough developmental evaluation. Five critical items were failed: social/emotional, communication, cognitive, adaptive/self-help and sensory. Subluxation-based specific chiropractic care was performed on the patient, which resulted in complete resolution of her headaches, acid reflux, vomiting and sleeplessness within one month. Significant improvements in autism-related issues were also noted, including calm behavior, increased eye contact, happier demeanor, improved attitude, increased focus and attention, and an initiation to sound out words. The study reports that the girl continues to progress as evidenced by a significantly increased vocabulary, continued improvement in attention and focus, and complete lack of epileptic episodes.

IN THE NEWS: WHEN MEDICAL PRACTICES KILL There’s an interesting contradiction within healthcare. In a crisis situation drugs and surgery can save lives but yet in the run-of-the-mill health problems the same tools can become dangerous. The overuse of antibiotics is a good example. When antibiotics were first discovered they actually saved lives. Unfortunately because of their overuse they are responsible for increasing death rate from antibiotic resistant bacteria. For those of you who grew up enjoying the Muppets will remember in 1990, it caused the death of Muppets creator, Jim Henson. Today, 23,000 Americans die each year from infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Across the world, the estimated annual mortality rate is 700,000. If these trends continue, by 2050, 10 million people globally will die each year, as the potent diseases of previous centuries return to their old force, according to the Review on Antimicrobial Resistance. The sad thing is that the vast majority of individuals with infections could control them with natural methods. We have many natural immune system products that cannot only help you overcome infections naturally but will make your immune system stronger to prevent future infections.

IN THE NEWS: Concussion rates highest for kids in rugby, hockey and football Concussion rates vary widely across youth sports, with the greatest injury risk in higher-contact games like rugby, hockey and football, a new research review finds. Overall, young athletes experienced an average of no more than one concussion for roughly every 5,000 minutes of participation time, according to the analysis of previous research on injuries in popular youth sports. That amounts to around one injury for every 67 hours of practice and competition. The concussion rate was about 18 times higher than average for rugby, five times greater for hockey, and roughly double for American football, the study found. A chiropractor can evaluate whether you demonstrate signs of neck injuries commonly associated with concussions, and provide you with relief of neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. According to the literature reviews, one of the most important recommendations that a chiropractor will tell you what to do for concussion is this: If your child is in sports and suffers a blow to the head, and/or experiences signs of a concussion, do not let him continue playing the sport.

Breaking the code of disease

magnifying-glass-Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.-virus-computer-code-machine-36255168

Part of the challenge that any doctor has is trying to understand and to help a patient with a certain condition. In chiropractic and natural healthcare we take a totally different approach in treating our patients. Instead of using drugs that just suppress symptoms, at a cost of sometimes serious side effects, chiropractors try to focus on the underlying cause.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

As a patient you might think that in healthcare there is a understanding of the cause for most disease, but you would be wrong. In our society most diseases are just suppressed not corrected. In natural healthcare and chiropractic we don't use suppressive drugs so we must try to understand the root cause in order to help the patient get well.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

So what do we do if the cause is not generally recognized or understood? That's where we have to break the code of disease to try to get to the root cause. There are a number of diseases that most doctors would say we don't understand the cause yet chiropractic helps on a regular basis. That's because most doctors don't work with nutritional therapy, energy medicine or chiropractic adjustments.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

To give you an example let's look at acid reflux which is a major problem in our society. The predominant approach is just to suppress acid production but of course this does not address the cause or offer a solution for the problem. In natural healthcare we understand the complexities of the digestive system and how it's impacted through the hormonal system, through emotions, through toxicity etc. so instead of writing a prescription that might turn off your acid production and thus compromise normal digestion, we have to unravel the cause in each patient's special circumstances. In natural healthcare/chiropractic one size doesn't fit all.

The_Journal_of_PhysiologDr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.y

Besides standard tools like lab work, x-ray or physical exam we utilize a biofeedback technique that we call "Vega testing". This allows us, in many cases, to unravel the underlying cause of a given condition for each patient. For instance let's talk about chronic fatigue syndrome it's been my experience that what works for one patient doesn't necessarily work for the next. But with the understanding the body can heal itself and working with the body's intelligence we can usually unravel the hidden code for a particular condition.

Let me give you an example: back in the 80s the diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome was first presented. Even today the consensus is that we don't understand what causes chronic fatigue syndrome. There's more than enough theories on the cause but there is no definitive cause presented. Yet we have gotten very good results by taking each patient as an individual and unraveling the code of their particular condition by investigation of electrical/chemical/mechanical systems and addressing the faults we find in each.

IN THE NEWS: Government Officials Gut 1986 NCVIA and Betray Public Trust In 1986, Congress created a federal vaccine injury compensation program (VICP) to restrict civil lawsuits against vaccine manufacturers and negligent doctors when government mandated vaccines injure or kill. Two out of three vaccine injury claims are denied. In 2011, the U.S. Supreme Court completely shielded the pharmaceutical industry from all civil liability for injuries and deaths caused by FDA licensed vaccines, and the VICP has been systematically gutted. IN THE NEWS: Women who smoke while pregnant may be hurting their grandkids' health A study that looked at tens of thousands of grandmothers and grandchildren in Sweden found that children whose maternal grandmothers smoked were up to 22 percent more likely to have asthma, even if their mothers never took up the habit, Discovery reports. “We found that smoking in previous generations can influence the risk of asthma in subsequent generations. This may also be important in the transmission of other exposures and diseases," study co-author Caroline Lodge says in a release. The researchers say the inheritance of risk could help explain why there has been a steep rise in asthma cases over the last 50 years, even though smoking rates have declined.

IN THE NEWS: Skip the anti-bacterial soap: regular suds work just as well Regular soap is just as effective as anti-bacterial soap at getting rid of germs through hand washing, a new study finds. This is hardly the first study to find no difference between the two types of soap, but it is the first to test regular and anti-bacterial soaps against 20 strains of bacteria in a lab, the researchers said. The investigators also tested the soaps on people's dirty hands. Today, manufacturers add triclosan to an array of products, including toothpaste, shampoo, clothing, kitchenware, furniture and toys, with the goal of reducing or preventing bacterial contamination and growth, the researchers said. However, triclosan has been linked to several negative effects on health. Research has tied it to antibiotic resistance among germs, and allergies and hormone disruption in people. One study even found that long-term exposure to triclosan might cause cancer in mice.

CHIROPRACTIC: 4 Perils of Poor Posture Slump away at your desk, scrunch your shoulders to type another text message, bend and lift without protecting your back – what harm can it do? Pain: The No. 1 consequence of poor posture is pain, and it can manifest anywhere from the neck down to the low back / pelvis and even further. Attitude: Try this quick test and you'll immediately notice how poor posture can impact your attitude / mood: First, in a standing position, roll your shoulders in toward your chest, letting your spine "round." How do you feel? Now do the opposite - expand your chest, pull back your shoulders and stand up tall. Which feels better? Which makes you feel confident, ready to take on the world? StressPoor posture compresses your lungs / organs, leading to shallow breathing, which leads to stress. It makes perfect sense: What's the first rule when you're stressed out? Take a deep, full breath or two. Major health issues: Stress isn't the only consequence of shallow breathing; reduced lung function means vital organs including the heart and brain don't receive adequate oxygenated blood, especially over time. The long-term result: an increased risk of heart / cardiovascular disease.

DIET: Death by Sugar (Sweetened Beverages)? Sugar-sweetened soft drinks, fruit juices and other beverages represent a growing health danger that goes far beyond simple cavities and poor energy; a recent analysis suggests regular consumption of sugary drinks can indirectly lead to death– yes, death. Sound far-fetched? Not really, and here's why: According to the researchers, who analyzed data from studies investigating the impact of sugar-sweetened beverage intake on body-mass index (BMI) and diabetes – and the resulting impact of BMI on cardiovascular disease and cancer, nearly 200,000 deaths worldwide can be attributed to drinking sugar-sweetened beverages. And that's nearly 200,000 deaths every year. Specifically, the researchers estimated that consumption of sweetened drinks contributes to 133,000 deaths from diabetes, 45,000 from cardiovascular disease, and 6,450 from cancer on an annual basis.

IN THE NEWS: Ways Gut Bacteria Affect Your Health A growing body of research suggests that gut bacteria influence weight. One recent study found that obese people have a less diversity in their gut flora than lean people. Your gut is the main area in the body where the immune system interacts with what's brought in from the outside world. Thus, the interaction between gut bacteria and your own cells appear to play an important role in the development of a fully-functioning immune system. Disrupting gut bacteria may have an effect on the brain, and in turn, behavior, studies in animal suggest. If gut bacteria play a role in human behavior, its possible that therapies that aim to restore normal gut flora, such as probiotics, may be helpful in correcting behavior and mood changes in people with gastrointestinal diseases, according to the researchers. Abnormal gut bacteria in infants may be one cause of colic, or excessive crying, recent research suggests.

Coming into contact with the leaves, especially if they are broken or torn, allows urushiol to seep into your system and cause the uncomfortable breakouts. For those that come into contact with these plants, try the following solutions to help relieve irritation: - Take liquid of witch hazel and apply it to the irritated area. This product can be found at any drugstore and it can help reduce the itching. - A product called Tecnu makes soaps and gels to combat urushiol. After applying it to the affected area, it lifts the allergen out of the cells of your skin, stops the spread, and reduces the irritation. - If you live near the beach, go into the ocean and gently rub sand it into the area and allow the salt water to wash away the urushiol.

Over the years patients have asked this question, due to things that they’ve heard on both sides of the question. So let’s look at the First component. Are vaccines safe? What kind of safety testing is done on vaccines? And what is in vaccines?

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

As far as what is in vaccines, that question might be difficult to fully answer because there is some evidence that the manufacturers are not required to list everything. But here’s what we know for sure: Vaccines contain aluminum, antibiotics, egg protein, formaldehyde, monosodium glutamate and Thimerosal; a mercury-containing preservative.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Varicella (chickenpox), rubella, hepatitis A, shingles and one preparation of rabies vaccine are all made in fetal embryo fibroblast cells. These cells were first obtained from elective termination of two pregnancies in the early 1960s.

Other ingredients include soy and other proteins, artificial colors and sweeteners. A complete list can be found on the CDC’s website under “Vaccine Excipients and Media Summary”.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

Some suspect that there are unstated ingredients like peanut oil.

There is adequate scientific evidence that peanut oil (arachis oil) has been used in vaccines since the 1960's. If current vaccine package inserts do not contain the specific evidence that peanut oil, or peanut meal, is contained within the final vaccine product, it does not mean that peanut antigen is not in the final vaccine product. Vaccine manufacturers use different growth media on which to manufacture the vaccines. They do not report, and I believe are not required to report, the exact ingredients in all of the growth media. Therefore, we may not know whether peanut antigen is used in the vaccine manufacturing process just by reading through the package inserts. Our lack of knowledge about it does not mean it isn’t knowledge waiting to be discovered. And, it may, or may not, have anything to do with an attempt to purposely hide the information that peanut antigen is present in vaccines.”  Lawrence Palevsky MD

Mercury Poisoning

Now if we look at the two main toxic metals that are in most childhood vaccines this becomes a potential health disaster. If you consider that the average person, by age 18 receive 69 doses of 16 different vaccines that’s a lot of mercury and aluminum. When you see the following quotes and statements from those who are supposed to be experts, you have to wonder: “Unfortunately, there is limited experience regarding the toxicity of Thimerosal and the content of mercury it presents, despite the long history of use. Robert Pless, M.D. National Immunization Program, CDC.” —– “In 1999, FDA determined that under the recommended childhood immunization schedule, infants might be exposed to cumulative doses of ethyl mercury that exceed some federal safety guidelines established for ingestion of methylmercury, another form of organic mercury.”

roberts-pic

If that’s not disturbing enough here some of the things we know about the effects of aluminum and mercury:

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

How Aluminum Affects Neurological Health: - Reduces nervous system activity by blocking the action potential of nerve cells - Inhibits enzymes in the brain- Inhibits the uptake of Dopamine, Noradrenaline (Norepinephrine), and Serotonin by nerve cells

Symptoms of aluminum toxicity: flatulence, headaches, colic, dryness of skin and mucous membranes, tendency for colds, burning pain in the head relieved by food, heartburn, aversion to meat also other associated aluminum problems can be Alzheimer’s disease, hyperparathyroidism, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, kidney dysfunction, liver dysfunction, anemia, neuromuscular disorder, hemolysis, leukocytosis, osteomalacia, Parkinson’s disease, and the list goes on.

Mercury is known to cause the following symptoms: mood swings, nervousness, irritability, and other emotional changes, insomnia, headache, abnormal sensations, muscle twitching, tremors, weakness, muscle atrophy, and decreased cognitive functions.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Not only does the government admit that these toxic metals exceed their own guidelines for safety the potential for allergic responses to all the other ingredients is quite troubling when you see the amount of food allergies showing up in the average child.

Now when you’re trying to balance risk and benefit it’s important that you have all the facts. And the fact is today that most childhood diseases are not life-threatening for the vast majority of children. 100 years ago that was a different story. In fact the prevalence of these diseases was substantially higher than they are today. Those who are pro-vaccine like to attribute the vaccines for the lower rate of disease but history doesn’t bear that out. In fact as you look at most childhood diseases like measles both the infection rate and the death rate were already in sharp decline before vaccines.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Medical historians say that better sanitation, cleaner water and better food supply have made more of an overall improvement to public health than any medical intervention has. Most disease graphs will show you these childhood diseases were in sharp decline before the vaccines were introduced. When the vaccines were introduced there was an uptick in the cases of the disease before the decline continued. And so, in my opinion, the benefit is somewhat questionable. If you look at, for instance measles, the risk-benefit is that most kids will have a fever and feel uncomfortable for about a week and then have lifetime immunity. In fact in the past parents chose to engage in what were called “measles parties” where they would intentionally expose their kids to someone with the measles so they could develop a lifetime immunity. As far as the vaccinated population there have been many breakthrough occurrences of the childhood disease in the fully vaccinated population. Also keep in mind the MMR vaccine is one of the most prone to damage of all of vaccines based on the “Vaccine court” records.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

The other side of the safety issue is what kind of studies have been done to assure the vaccines are safe? For instance if you are a drug manufacturer and you want to bring a new drug to market, one of the types of testing you need to do is compare the effect of your drug to a placebo. In other words you’ll give a group of people your medication and another group gets a placebo which is classically called a sugar pill. In other words a placebo should be a substance that causes no negative or positive side effects. That way you can clearly see the negative effects the drug might have as well as the positive ones.

Not so with vaccines. To my knowledge vaccine safety studies are the only ones that compare one drug to another drug. In other words, instead of using the placebo they use another vaccine as the placebo. Outrageous; this is one of the best ways to cover some of the side effects of the vaccine. With this dishonest safety study method it’s impossible to properly evaluate a vaccine’s safety.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Let’s talk a second about effectiveness. Let’s say you want to bring a drug to market that you say reduces heart attacks. So how would you determine that? Again you would have a population where half get the drug and the other half you give a placebo or give nothing at all and study the effects in both groups. Let’s say the drug group had 20 heart attacks and the placebo group had 80 by the end of the study. This would give you some idea that maybe the medication does prevent heart attacks.

But how do they determine the effectiveness of a vaccine? There are plenty in the population of unvaccinated kids and adults. It would be easy enough to do the above study but that’s not how they determine it, if it’s a vaccine. All they have to do is show antibody production after a vaccine, and they put a lot of stuff in a vaccine including heavy metals to stimulate an immune response. So they don’t have to show any difference between vaccinated populations and unvaccinated population to prove effectiveness. In my opinion this is a farce.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

The bottom line is that we have to listen to either the loudest voice or the one that has the authority to punish you if you don’t comply. It’s disturbing how the use of intimidation, fear and outright lies are used to promote vaccines. If you’re a nurse you know what I’m talking about Maybe you’re a believer but still you have to admit that you’ve been trained to misrepresent the possible side effects when you’re talking to patients.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

In Oklahoma you still have the right to choose between vaccinating your child or not. A simple exemption form available from the school nurse or the Oklahoma State Department of Health called the ODH form 216 – A, many of my patients tell me when they asked for such a form the school nurse she lies to them and says there is no such form and your child can’t come to school without being vaccinated. Why would there be an organized conspiracy of deception if there is clear evidence that vaccines are both safe and effective?

Is every child who gets a vaccine going to be severely damaged by it? Of course not. There are a lot of different factors that lead to reactions from vaccines. But all negative reactions to vaccines don’t always show up in the first month, year or even decade of life. Not only can the toxic metals and other additives to vaccines have the potential of causing long-term negative effects but the organism that they use in the vaccine has been known to set up housekeeping in the body commonly in the intestinal track producing long-term health problems.

toxic_worldDr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Detoxification can be an important process in trying to eliminate the negative effects of vaccines. We recommend detoxification as a normal course of health recovery for most of our patients. But in some cases specialized procedures are needed to try to root out the viruses that have been hiding in the body for years that have caused inflammation, cancers and other health problems. Again not everybody has these issues but, in my opinion, it brings up a risk-benefit evaluation that goes against vaccines.

A lot of times, if you look behind the hysteria associated with an outbreak like with measles, you’ll find  in the vast majority of cases there is no long-term permanent catastrophic effect. The same can’t be said for children in third world countries who have horrible sanitation, dirty water and poor food supply. There you will find the very negative outcomes from the same diseases. In Africa they have found that giving a child one dose of 200,000 units of vitamin A will sharply decrease the death rate. There are more intelligent ways to deal with these childhood diseases then injecting toxic metals and other ingredients.

alzheimers-brain-Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Just this week on an NPR station there was a heartbreaking story about the MMR vaccine. The parents had a healthy baby meeting all his developmental goals up to the point of getting the vaccine. They say on the way home from getting the vaccine the young child screamed constantly to the point they had to pull the car over to the side of the road. The child had a fever and when he woke up the next morning he was not the same child. The child suffered catastrophic brain injury that left him totally disabled into his adulthood. He has to be constantly monitored as he will run away if given the chance and has to wear adult diapers for the rest of his life.

I have found Studies that show unvaccinated children are a lot healthier than vaccinated ones. Buyer beware.

Here is one: A 20 year old study from the 1990’s has recently surfaced that compares unvaccinated children to vaccinated children. The study concludes that those who were vaccinated were more likely to suffer from the following illnesses:

  • asthma
  • eczema
  • ear infections
  • hyperactivity
  • and many other chronic conditions.

There was a 10-fold increase in cases of tonsillitis in the children who were vaccinated and a 100% absence of tonsillitis in those unvaccinated.

In 1992, the Immunization Awareness Society (IAS) conducted a survey to examine the health of New Zealand’s children. Unsurprisingly, the results of their study indicated that unvaccinated children were far healthier than vaccinated children.

Questionnaires were given out to IAS members, their friends and their associates asking various health questions. A total of 245 families returned their questionnaires, giving the researchers a total of 495 children surveyed. Of these children, 226 were vaccinated and 269 were unvaccinated.

Healthy Children and Ethics

The ages of the children ranged between the ages of two weeks – 46 years (obviously some friends were older with older children). Of the children studied, 273 were males and 216 were females. (Six children were unclassified.) Sue Claridge, who reported on the study, wrote: “Respondents were asked to provide the year of birth, gender, vaccinations received, whether or not the child suffered from a range of chronic conditions (asthma, eczema, ear infections/glue ear, recurring tonsillitis, hyperactivity, diabetes or epilepsy) whether or not he or she needed grommets, had had a tonsillectomy, or were shown to develop motor skills (walking, crawling, sitting-up etc.). Parents also provided information on breastfeeding and bottle feeding and when a child was weaned if breastfed.”During the study, another interesting fact emerged. Researchers discovered that 92 percent of the children requiring a tonsillectomy operation had received the measles vaccination, indicating that the vaccination for measles may have made some of the children more susceptible to tonsillitis. The study also revealed that 81 of the families had both vaccinated and unvaccinated children. Many of these families had vaccinated their older children but had grown more reluctant to vaccinate their younger children, due to their growing concerns regarding vaccine safety. Researchers concluded that: “While this was a very limited study, particularly in terms of the numbers of unvaccinated children that were involved and the range of chronic conditions investigated, it provides solid scientific evidence in support of considerable anecdotal evidence that unvaccinated children are healthier that their vaccinated peers.” [1] Although governments from around the world have continually stated that studying vaccinated versus unvaccinated children would be unethical, the New Zealand researchers are not the only group of researchers to study comparisons.

Vaccinated Children 5 Times More Likely To Suffer From A Range Of Diseases

In September 2011, German researchers carrying out a longitudinal study surveyed a total of 8000 unvaccinated children from the ages of 0 –19. As with the New Zealand study, researchers collected their data by conducting a survey using questionnaires. [2] Results showed that vaccinated children were up to five times more likely to suffer from a variety of diseases and disorders than unvaccinated children. Their results were compared to another German study (KiGGS), which examined a larger sample group consisting of 17,461 participants between the ages of 0 –17. Dr. Andreas Bachair, a German classical homeopathic practitioner, responsible for collecting the results of the survey from the website vaccineinjury.info stated that:“Asthma, hay fever and neurodermatitis are seen very frequently today. A recent German study with 17461 children between 0-17 years of age (KIGGS) showed that 4.7% of these children suffer from asthma, 10.7% of these children from hay fever and 13.2% from neurodermatitis. These numbers differ in western countries, i.e. the prevalence of asthma among children in the US is 6% whereas it is 14-16% in Australia (Australia’s Health 2004, AIHW). The prevalence of asthma among unvaccinated children in our study is around 2.5%, hay fever, 3%, and neurodermatitis, 7%. According to the KIGGS study more than 40% of children between the ages of 3 and 17 years were sensitized against at least one allergen tested (20 common allergens were tested) and 22.9% had an allergic disease. Although we did not perform a blood test, around 10% stated that their children had an allergy.” [3] (As this study is a longitudinal study, the number of children being studied has since risen to 13,222. To join the study, you can fill in the questionnaire provided by clicking on the link listed as the third reference at the end of this article.) Although there were four cases of autism reported among unvaccinated children, Dr. Bachair reported that: “Of these 4 children one tested very high for metals (mercury, aluminium, arsenic); in another case the mother was tested very high for mercury.” However, this number pales into insignificance when we compare it to the 1 in 88 children currently being reported as autistic by the CDC. [4]

Other Conditions Found To Be Almost Non-Existent In Unvaccinated Children

Dr. Andreas Bachair continued her report by stating that their study found the prevalence of sinusitis, warts, skin problems and middle ear infections were also much lower in the unvaccinated children, as were the cases of diabetes and epilepsy. She went on to say that the results demonstrated that the prevalence of many conditions in the unvaccinated children were also significantly lower. These were: “Other disorders and diseases As we included open questions in our survey we evaluated the prevalence (of the first 10,070 participants) of some other disorders and illnesses. Unvaccinated children show very low prevalences of the following disorders:

  • Dyslexia: 0.21%
  • Speech delay/articulation problems: 0.38%
  • Sensory Processing disorder: 0.28%
  • Anxiety: 0.25%
  • Depression: 0.12%
  • Bedwetting: 0.12%
  • Celiac disease: 0.12%
  • Gluten sensitivity: 0.41%
  • GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease): 0.06%”

Dr. Bachair concluded her amazing and intuitive paper by adding a number of statements from parents, which I believe really added weight to her overall findings.

No study of health outcomes of vaccinated people versus unvaccinated has ever been conducted in the U.S. by CDC or any other agency in the 50 years or more of an accelerating schedule of vaccinations (now over 60 doses of 14 vaccines given before kindergarten, 26 doses in the first year). Most data collected by CDC is contained in the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) database. The VAERS is generally thought to contain only 3 to 5 percent of reportable incidents. This is simply because only some immediate reactions are reported by doctors; but many are not admitted to be reactions to the vaccine. Most importantly, the VAERS numbers are only immediate reactions, which would take place within a few hours to a few weeks. Long-term vaccine-induced diseases and disorders are not recognized by parents or doctors when these conditions develop perhaps a few months to five years or more and would never be realized to come from multiple vaccinations. In other words, many children and adults have diseases and disorders that are vaccine induced and they never suspect they are from the vaccines, as this study indicates.

Conclusion

We find it amazing that despite mainstream media and leading government agencies stressing repeatedly that studies comparing vaccinated children to unvaccinated children cannot take place for ethical reasons, groups around the world are taking it upon themselves to do these studies anyway.

While surveys of this kind are often dismissed as being purely epidemiological and passed off as little more than stamp collecting, we believe that studies of this nature should not be dismissed out of hand. After all, many stamp collections contain just one stamp that is worth far more than its weight in gold.

These studies show without doubt that unvaccinated children are healthier than their vaccinated peers and, for this reason, these studies should be given careful consideration by all parents and professionals studying vaccination safety.
