No matter how old you are, chances are the #1 way others perceive your age is through the largest organ on your body: skin.
But the extent of showing natural signs of aging is not totally up to fate. In fact, lifestyle factors have a lot of say in the matter.
Stress levels and food choices affect how our genes express themselves. That may sound scary, but it’s actually great news. It means we have significant control over a topic that’s gaining steam in wellness and beauty circles: the accelerated breakdown of collagen.
But first … why is collagen so important when it comes to appearance and skin health? Collagen is actually the most abundant protein in the human body. Seventy percent of skin, hair and nails and nearly 100 percent of connective tissues are collagen. It literally holds you together: from the hairs on your head to every inch of your skin, to your joint comfort and mobility. It even impacts the overall health of your gut including gut integrity.
But here’s the problem...
As we age, our bodies’ natural production of collagen slows dramatically. Over 25? You’re probably losing collagen.
And as collagen levels lower in the body, skin typically starts “looking older,” with less elasticity, vibrancy and hydration. Creaky joints and gut disturbances can also set it. Dropping collagen levels could even mean thinner hair and brittle nails.
This decrease in collagen can result in less mobility, muscle mass, muscle performance and skin health.
But it’s not just the natural aging process robbing us of our collagen … there are other “thieves” hiding out as modern-day hazards...
Thankfully, natural collagen boosters exist.
All of the above are great collagen boosters, but I believe none of them compare to the greatest collagen booster in the world: collagen itself that comes from food sources like chicken broth, beef broth, wild fish broth and eggshell membranes.

DIET: This Is Why Marathon Runners Get Sick Days After a Race it is commonly believed that some forms of exercise, such as endurance events, suppress your immune system and leave you at risk of infections, like the common cold. However, our latest review of the evidence suggests that this is probably not true. In fact, exercise seems to boost the immune system. The idea that endurance exercise suppresses the immune system stems from research in the 1980s and 1990s. In these studies, competitors of endurance running events, such as the Los Angeles Marathon, were asked if they had symptoms of infections in the days and weeks after the race. Many did, leading to the idea that endurance exercise increases infection risk. An overlooked problem in many of these studies was that symptoms of “infections” were not confirmed in a lab, so it wasn’t known if they were genuine illness symptoms. More recent studies have shown that most symptoms reported after marathons are not real infections. Instead, the symptoms are caused by other factors, such as allergy. Although a strenuous exercise bout itself will not increase the likelihood of catching an infection, other factors might. First, attending any event where there is a large gathering of people increases your chance of infection. Second, public transport, particularly airline travel over long distances, where sleep is disrupted, may also increase your infection risk. Other factors, like eating an inadequate diet, getting cold and wet, and psychological stress, have all been linked to a greater chance of developing infections.
IN THE NEWS: Fire Up Your Performance With Organic Red Beets If you’ve visited a gym in the past year, chances are you’ve heard someone mention beet juice, or you’ve even witnessed first hand a trim, muscular athlete down a bottle of the crimson-colored juice before pounding the weights. Red beet root juice has become synonymous with performance, stamina and endurance. But beet juice is not the ideal way to get the benefits of beets as it is loaded with sugar and is mostly from GMO beets. While the potential advantages of drinking beet juice include workout benefits, this ancient, prehistoric food offers much more. Beets contain a variety of unique health-boosting nutrients not found in or in good supply in other foods. They can boost your athletic performance, stamina, and endurance--They help promote a healthy normal inflammatory response--They help promote healthy blood flow throughout your body and brain--They support your body’s natural detoxification processes--They support immune and cellular health--They promote brain neuroplasticity, or the ability to form new neural pathways, especially when consumed before exercise--They’re high in valuable nutrients: vitamin C, folate, potassium and manganese.

IN THE NEWS: HORSERADISH CONTAINS POWERFUL CANCER-FIGHTING COMPOUNDS Horseradish is a key flavor in prepared foods such as potato salad, sandwiches and sauces. It can add zest to dips and vegetable dishes. However, research out of the University of Illinois has found eating horseradish can actually help you to inhibit cancer cell growth. How does it work? This is due to its high content of glucosinolates, which are enzymes known to have cancer-fighting properties. Glucosinolates assist the body in detoxifying – at the cellular level – and eliminating harmful free radicals. While broccoli (which is in the same family as horseradish) is known for its glucosinolate content, horseradish has 10 times the amount. Horseradish is pretty pungent, so (fortunately) a little goes a long way both in terms of flavor and cancer-fighting benefits. Horseradish can fight cancer so well due to its detoxification ability as well as its high absorption rate; around 90 percent of this compound is effectively absorbed after ingestion. Once in the body, glucosinolates are broken down into powerful derivatives called indoles and isothiocyanates – which help us avoid cancer cell growth. In addition to its cancer-fighting properties, horseradish contains key nutrients like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and vitamin C. Horseradish root is most commonly ground into a spice and prepared as a condiment. However, it has also been used medicinally for over 3,000 years. Horseradish has been used to treat asthma, colds, toothache, colic, and scurvy (because of its vitamin C content.) Horseradish poultices relieve pain through topical application, and it has even been infused into milk for use in skin care. Important to note: Horseradish offers potent antimicrobial and antibiotic properties.
WELLNESS: IQ SCORES ARE DROPPING EVERY GENERATION SINCE THE 1970’S In a bit of unwelcome news, scientists have found that humans are becoming less intelligent. In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a pair of Norwegian researchers studied test results from over 730,000 young men and found that IQ scores were dropping – to the tune of seven points per generation. A recent British study – which demonstrated that IQ scores have fallen by 2.5 to 4.3 points every decade since the end of World War II – helps to corroborate the results of the Norwegian research. These findings are in sharp contrast to results from the first half of the twentieth century when IQ scores rose steadily. (Could the barrage of pesticides and environmental toxins introduced during the second half of the century be taking their toll on human brain function? Many natural health experts think so.) Fact: both animal and human studies have shown that fluoride impairs learning and memory. Researchers at the Berkeley School of Public Health at the University of California found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides – such as chlorpyrifos and diazinon – is associated with lower intelligence scores in seven-year-olds. Children with high lead levels can exhibit lower IQ scores and learning disabilities, along with behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, inability to maintain attention and aggression. The EPA notes that an estimated 1.7 million children are currently affected by lead toxicity in the United States alone – almost 900,000 of them under the age of six. According to a new study, the “brain drain” from exposure to mercury is hitting America in the pocketbook. According to a study conducted at Ashland University, aluminum cookware made in developing countries can contain dangerous amounts of lead and cadmium – along with unhealthy amounts of aluminum. NOTE: the need to regularly detox your system is important for your health and your brain.
CHIROPRACTIC: SUPPORT FOR YOUR 3 ARCHES AND YOU’RE BACK AT THE SAME TIME The feet are the foundation of the body. They provide the necessary stability to perform daily activities by supporting the weight of the entire body using a strong, 3-arched bond called the plantar vault. The plantar vault provides numerous benefits: Balances to the body, propels us forward, safely absorbs heel-strike shock, Adapts to walking and running stresses. Over time, one or more of your arches will weaken due to gravitational pressure. This process is completely natural, but can be expedited by injuries, a short leg, improper posture and naturally weak ligaments and tendons. Once an arch or multiple arches have weakened, the weight of the body will shift away from the weakened arch and start to apply pressure and stress to the other arches, causing pain and other symptoms throughout the body. A Foot Levelers custom orthotic is individually designed for your feet – helping achieve a balanced foundation and stabilized pelvis. Our custom orthotics are handmade for your unique feet based on a casts, and your doctor’s exam. Over-the-counter insoles may initially cost less, but they only support one arch in your foot. When only one arch is being supported, it may not maintain the structure of your plantar vault, and problems can start in other parts of your body. In fact, “over-supporting” just one arch of the foot may actually cause pain and symptoms, not relieve them. Do you experience pain daily? Individually designed Foot Levelers custom orthotics with 3-arch support, however, can. Imbalances in the feet can lead to knee rotation, pelvic tilt and shoulder drop. These imbalances in the body can be caused by pronation and supination of the foot. These instabilities can lead to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, knee pain, hip pain, back pain, and neck pain. A properly aligned body will have symmetrical feet, level knees, pelvis and shoulders. Wearing Custom Orthotics may help alleviate imbalances and conditions caused by those imbalances. A conclusive new study, “Shoe Orthotics for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial” published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation shows that Foot Levelers custom orthotics, particularly in combination with Chiropractic care, significantly reduce Low Back Pain (LBP).

IN THE NEWS: Which Foods Are Best for Your Heart Health? Many vegetables contain naturally occurring nitrates, which your body transforms into nitric oxide (NO), a soluble gas continually produced from the amino acid L-arginine inside your cells. nitric oxide supports healthy endothelial function and protects your mitochondria. Acting as a potent vasodilator, NO also relaxes and widens your blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. As noted in research3 presented by Dr. Michael Greger above, a diet high in nitrate is a natural strategy recommended for the treatment of prehypertension and hypertension (high blood pressure), "and to protect individuals at risk of adverse vascular events," i.e., heart attacks. Indeed, raw beets — which are high in nitrates — have been shown to lower blood pressure by an average of four to five points within a matter of hours. Some studies have shown a glass of beet juice can lower systolic blood pressure by more than eight points — far more than most blood pressure medications. In conventional medicine, nitrates are used to treat angina and congestive heart failure, and research shows a glass of beetroot juice has the same effect as prescription nitrates. Red beets are well-known for their high nitrate content, but leafy greens contain even more nitrates per serving; arugula contains the highest amounts, followed by rhubarb.
WELLNESS: Sugar During Pregnancy Linked to Allergies Allergies are a sign your body’s immune system is working overtime; consuming sugar during pregnancy may increase your child’s risk of developing allergies and asthma. Sugar has a profound effect on the health of your growing baby and may increase your own risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and brain-related disorders as well. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London evaluated survey data from nearly 9,000 mother-child pairs in the ongoing Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, tracking the health of families with children born between April 1, 1991, and December 31, 1992.4 Lead author Annabelle Bedard, Ph.D., commented on what triggered the researchers to evaluate the association between sugar and allergies: "The dramatic 'epidemic' of asthma and allergies in the West in the last 50 years is still largely unexplained — one potential culprit is a change in diet. Intake of free sugar and high fructose corn syrup has increased substantially over this period. We know that the prenatal period may be crucial for determining risk of asthma and allergies in childhood and recent trials have confirmed that maternal diet in pregnancy is important." Optimizing your vitamin D level during pregnancy may reduce your child’s risk for developing asthma and support your child’s immune system.
CHIROPRACTIC: Low back problems that are disc related Low back pain is the number one health problem in the United States, but the good news is chiropractic is the number one effective treatment based on government studies. When vertebrae, in the back, start to lose their alignment, the connective tissue and fluid pad (discs) between the vertebras come under stress. Through repetitive trauma from normal daily activities, this stress can lead to bulging and sometimes tearing of fibers within the disk. As this damage increases the gelatinous material called the nucleus pulposus can migrate to the edge of the disc and sometimes herniated through the disc. The good news is most disc problems can be adequately resolved through chiropractic adjustments, exercise, and nutritional therapy. That's right, discs need nutrition just like every other structure in your body. With a combination of connective tissue support, enzymes to treat inflammation and swelling and chiropractic adjustments most disk problems can be resolved without surgery. There is a classic disc shift seen in patients with lumbar disc disorders. When the patient tries to stand up straight, their hips are usually shifted to one side. If you or someone you know suffers from severe low back pain, they need chiropractic care to resolve the disk problem.

IN THE NEWS: Lutein — An Important Nutrient for Eye and Brain Health Lutein is well-known for its vision-enhancing properties. It helps stave off age-related eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration, which is the No. 1 cause of blindness among the elderly. Lutein may also play an important role in brain health and may help prevent cognitive decline. Those with higher levels of lutein in middle-age had more youthful neural responses than those with lower levels. Eating plenty of dark leafy greens, rich in carotenoids like lutein, can go a long way toward maintaining healthy vision and keeping cognitively fit into old age. Lutein, which you have to get from your diet as your body cannot manufacture it, is well-known for its vision-enhancing properties. Along with zeaxanthin, it's found in high concentrations in your macular pigment and macula lutea,1the small central part of your retina responsible for detailed central vision. Other nutrients that are important for brain health and cognition include animal-based omega-3 fats, vitamin D, and B vitamins. Good food sources for these, and lutein are included.
WELLNESS: What Are the Health Benefits of (Chokeberries)? Clinical studies indicate that eating berries, including Aronia berries, on a regular basis helps fight neurological diseases, cancer, aging, inflammation, diabetes and bacterial infections.
CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic and Leg Length Because the spinal cord is housed by the spine and the exiting nerve roots communicate with the autonomic nerves that basically run our organ function, maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis is very important to minimize nerve irritation and subsequent health-related problems. The focus of this article is on leg length, its effect on our posture, methods of assessment, and treatment. Leg length plays an important role in posture. When there is a difference in leg length, the pelvis cannot maintain a level position, and because the spine’s base is the pelvis, it cannot stay straight if there is a leg length discrepancy. Doctors of all disciplines realize the importance of leg length, especially orthopedic surgeons as they consider a hip or knee replacement! There are many causes of leg length issues, and some include a genetic predisposition (inherited) or trauma during bone growth years. From a treatment standpoint, a heel lift (with or without arch supports) can be placed into the shoe on the short leg side. At 12mm (0.5”), problems with the heel lift being pushed out of the shoe and/or sliding forwards in the shoe may prohibit the use of these thicker lifts after which point the bottom of the shoe can be built up by a shoe cobbler (some services can be found online as well).

IN THE NEWS: Magnesium preventing cancer Pancreatic cancer – which claims roughly 49,000 lives every year in the United States – is notoriously difficult to detect and treat, conventionally speaking. Sadly, rates of this lethal cancer have been rising steadily over the past ten years, and the National Cancer Society predicts that there will be over 55,000 new cases diagnosed in 2018 alone. Yet, we know based on published research, that magnesium deficiency can play a role in the development of this dreadful disease. Fact: magnesium deficiency is common in the United States – with the World Health Organization reporting that less than 60 percent of the American adult population ingests enough of this life-sustaining essential mineral. Let’s take a closer look at some of the ways in which magnesium intake impacts your health – and some methods for increasing levels. Scientists found that magnesium levels were associated with pancreatic cancer risk, with the odds of the disease rising by 24 percent for every 100 mg decrease in daily magnesium intake. And, if intakes dropped to less than 75 percent of the recommended daily amount – established by the Institute of Medicine as 420 mg a day for men and 320 mg a day for women – the risk of pancreatic cancer rose by a stunning 76 percent.
WELLNESS: Honey is a blend of sugar, trace enzymes, minerals, vitamins, and amino acids that has antibacterial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties. Honey works as well as dextromethorphan, a common ingredient in over-the-counter cough medications, to soothe cough and related sleeping difficulties. Unprocessed honey can help treat skin infections, helps wounds heal, and improves dandruff and itchy scalp. It takes about 60,000 bees, collectively traveling up to 55,000 miles and visiting more than 2 million flowers, to gather enough nectar to make one pound of honey. Choose raw, unfiltered honey for medicinal properties; most honey on the market is highly processed and may even contain additives like corn syrup. Manuka honey is produced in New Zealand by bees that pollinate the native manuka bush. Advocates say it treats wound infections and other conditions. Components of Manuka Honey Hydrogen peroxide is produced by honey. It gives most honey its antibiotic quality. But some types of honey, including manuka honey, also have other components with antibacterial qualities. Another antibacterial component in manuka honey is methylglyoxal (MG). MG is a compound found in most types of honey, but usually only in small quantities. In manuka honey, MG comes from the conversion of another compound -- dihydroxyacetone -- that is found in the nectar of manuka flowers. MG is thought to give manuka honey some of its antibacterial power. The higher the concentration of MG, the possibly stronger the antibiotic effect. But, there may also be other compounds involved in the medicinal effect of manuka honey.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Health is a choice Working with patients for over 42+ years I’ve learned the importance of proper lifestyle choices. It’s been said there are no incurable diseases just some incurable patients. Outside of rare genetic disorders most people have the inborn ability to live a healthy, pain-free life. But that ability requires making quality life choices. I’m pretty sure most people realize what shape your house would be in you never cleaned it in 20 years. A similar thing is true about your body; if you’re not proactive in taking care of your health then complicated health issues can develop that take time to repair. Unfortunately, in most cases, we are unaware that our bodies are breaking down because we have no obvious symptoms. It’s similar to drinking water, as we age our sense of thirst diminishes and we can be significantly dehydrated and not even know it. A lot of times it is just simple things that need to be addressed in order to maintain excellent health. Movement is important, you don’t have to be conditioning for the Olympics to stay in good health even three days a week of walking or other exercises can have a significant benefit. Rest and relaxation including refreshing sleep are crucial for regulating stress hormones that can have a profound effect on your health over time. Positive mental and spiritual attitude have a healing effect on the mind as well as the body, practicing an act of kindness not only helps others in our society but floods your body with important hormones and chemicals that not only give you a sense of well-being but have health-promoting benefits. Since the nervous system controls and coordinates, everything in the body maintaining a stress-free nervous system through regular chiropractic adjustments are crucial. Chiropractic keeps the communication channels open and allows the body to self-regulate and heal. And what you put in your mouth is crucial, it has been said that “We dig our own graves with a fork.”

IN THE NEWS: Kids whose mothers do these 5 things are 75% less likely to be obese The best thing mothers can do to ensure their kids avoid developing obesity may be to take care of themselves. That's the main takeaway from a study looking at mothers and children published Wednesday in the British Medical Journal. Childhood obesity rates have more than tripled in the US since the 1970s, according to the CDC. Nearly 20% of kids and teens aged 6 to 19 now qualify as obese. Being obese as a child comes with serious long-term health effects, including higher risk for diseases including asthma, bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, type 2 diabetes, depression, and risk factors for heart disease. According to the study, genetics play an important role in obesity, but researchers think lifestyle factors may be behind the increased rate in recent decades. So the study authors decided to analyze lifestyle choices of mothers and children to see how they affected obesity rates. Obesity risk is lowest for children whose mothers make five healthy lifestyle choices. These mothers maintain a healthy weight, exercise at least the recommended 150 minutes per week, and don't smoke. They eat a high quality diet, determined by high intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains, healthy fats, and low consumption of sugary beverages, red and processed meat. Finally, they drink light to moderate amounts, quantified as two small glasses of wine or one standard pint of beer a day.
WELLNESS: Obesity makes breast cancer cells more aggressive We already know that obesity diminishes health in a number of ways. Now the increased spread of breast cancer can be added to that list. Research out of Heidelberg University Hospital and Helmholtz Zentrum München, Technische Universität München (TUM) has yielded some enlightening discoveries. During their research, the European scientists found that obesity causes cytokines to be released into the bloodstream. This in turn impacts the metabolism of breast cancer cells, causing them to become much more aggressive. Losing excess body weight will reduce the risk of breast cancer metastasis: Breast cancer metastasis and recurrence after tumor surgery is the primary cause of deaths from cancer in women. Other studies have linked obesity with aggressive breast cancer forms. Important note: Postmenopausal women are at an even higher risk of developing breast cancer that metastasizes. Naturally, we all understand the importance of maintaining a healthy weight for good health. These research results should give overweight women – at a high risk for breast cancer – even more incentive to lose weight. Take action today: Favor organic (chemical free) fruits and vegetables; eat high-quality protein while avoiding processed foods. Lower mental and emotional stress – especially the repair of toxic personal relationships. Exercise on a regular basis – even if it’s just walking. And, finally, replace those toxic personal care or household cleaning products with safer versions that use natural ingredients like, essential oils. These steps will go a long way to reducing your risk of cancer or any other chronic health problem.
CHIROPRACTIC: KIDS AND TECH NECK Neck problems are becoming way too common with today’s technology. Over the years the development of the proper position of computer monitors and keyboards have become better understood but with today’s smartphones we are back to the starting line. The average head weighs about 10 pounds and it sits on the smallest vertebra in the body. When you lean your head forward just 1 inch you develop up to 16 to 18 pounds of pressure on your spine particularly your low back. This steady head forward posture puts the muscles, discs and joints in the neck under a lot of stress. Over time this can alter the normal curve in the neck leading to degenerative changes. As this process develops headaches, neck tension, eyes and sinus symptoms, shoulder problems, elbow problems, carpal tunnel syndrome are just a few of the issues that can develop. You add the effect of technology on poor sleeping habits you become a neck problem waiting for the point of explosion i.e. symptoms. Unfortunately degenerative changes in the neck don’t always show up symptomatically for a decade or more. When you feel the first symptoms the underlying problem could be very hard to fix. For your kids’ sake you need to discuss keeping the phone out in front of them so they don’t have to bend their head forward and down. Chiropractic adjustments are the most effective treatment for tech neck.

IN THE NEWS: Avoid a heart attack by eating blueberries and strawberries, according to Harvard Medical School We all know that eating fruits and vegetables is good for your health. Now new research out of Harvard Medical School is confirming that eating more berries can contribute greatly to heart health. In fact, blueberries and strawberries (in particular) contribute dramatically to this area of health, lowering the risk of a heart attack. For the study, health data came from 93,600 women who had signed up for the Nurses’ Health Study from ages 25 to 42. Over 18 years, they gave information regarding their diet. Looking at relatively young women at low risk of heart attack allowed the researchers to see many heart attack risk factors more clearly. The evidence is clear: Reduce heart attack risk up to 34 percent by eating blueberries and strawberries. The researchers determined women who ate the least strawberries and blueberries were at a higher risk for having a heart attack. Those who ate the highest amounts of these fruits were a full 34 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack.
WELLNESS: How to Get Rid of a Cough Contrary to what many people believe, a cough is not a disease in and of itself – rather, it’s a symptom, a warning sign that your body gives out to let you know that there’s something wrong with your health, and that there’s an underlying condition that you need to take care of. For example, a cough can present itself with the common cold and other types of respiratory illness. It may manifest if you have gastrointestinal problems like GERD, or may be triggered by prescription medications. In some cases, it may be a sign of a severe health disorder, such as if you’re coughing up blood – a condition called hemoptysis, which can be indicative of tuberculosis, bronchitis or even lung cancer. So what you do with a simple cough? A study found that raw honey works just as well as dextromethorphan, an ingredient used in OTC drugs, to soothe cough triggered by upper respiratory tract infections, particularly in children. Drinking enough water helps thin out mucus. It also keeps mucous membranes moist, which may reduce the need to cough. NOTE: If you have signs or symptoms of getting sick call for an appointment and try a natural approach first. There are no safe drugs plus they don't get the roots of the problem.
CHIROPRACTIC: Is chiropractic your first choice in healthcare? We have said for many years that if you have a health challenge you should consider chiropractic/natural healthcare first, drug second and surgery last. You might have to think about this for a while to understand the wisdom. Here is a case history that demonstrates some of the wisdom of this recommendation. The patient was a female in her mid-20s and she recently had a child but was unable to hold it because of seizure activity. She was involved in a serious car accident where she was almost thrown through the windshield of the car. She had significant head trauma which led to seizures. She was put on seizure medication which controled them for a period of time but then she started having breakthrough seizures which made it dangerous for her to hold her child without supervision. Her doctor informed her if they raised the level of her medication it could be fatal. It is common that our patients are referred to us by other patients which is how she came to make an appointment. She presented with not only seizures but of course she had neck and back pain from the accident, she suffered from significant headaches since the accident, she had knee pain which they were considering surgery for and she also complained of pain over her last remaining ovary. Her other ovary was removed because of pain they could not control. Our exam indicated she had subluxations (spinal misalignments) and other signs of trauma that appeared in her x-rays and physical exam. She began treatment and soon noticed her seizure activity was diminishing, within time she was seizure free and was excited she could hold her baby again. Her headaches became a thing of the past along with her knee pain (no surgery necessary) and then what excited her the most is she was no longer having pain over her last remaining ovary. This was important because she wanted to have more children. I see this type of story repeated hundreds of times in my practice. Patients come in with conditions no one else can help them with and through chiropractic adjustments, nutritional therapy and other lifestyle changes their bodies get well. Who do you know who would benefit from chiropractic? Maybe you're not sure if their condition will but send them to us anyway we would be the first to tell them if we couldn't help them. Only a chiropractic physician knows if chiropractic could help.

DIET: 43 Times More Vitamin C than an Orange, a Weapon Against the Flu Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small orange-red fruit, similar in size to that of a large cherry, with a tart flavor; the camu camu tree grows primarily in South America. Camu camu contains exceptionally high amounts of vitamin C — anywhere from 1,882 to 2,280 milligrams per 100 grams of fresh fruit. For comparison, acerola cherries typically contain around 1,678 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. Vitamin C is an important immune booster and helps defend against viral attacks and inflammation. It’s also used by your body for wound healing, repairing and maintaining the health of your bones and teeth. Camu camu also contains a number of other valuable nutrients, including manganese, copper, carotenoids, flavonoids, essential amino acids (including valine, serine and leucine), gallic and ellagic acid, and fiber. Research suggests camu camu can help boost cognitive function and reduce your risk of dementia, facilitate muscle growth, aid digestion, lower your risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, macular degeneration and more.
IN THE NEWS: Untreatable 'super gonorrhea' case could be 'tip of the iceberg' The medical community is sounding the alarm after a man in the U.K. has become the first patient with a type of gonorrhea infection that is not responding to the antibiotics commonly used to cure it. Doctors are calling it the “worst-ever” case of the sexually transmitted disease, which hits approximately 78 million men and women every year. According to the BBC, the unidentified man had a regular partner but picked up the disease earlier this year after a sexual encounter with a woman in South East Asia. STDS HIT RECORD HIGH IN US, 2M CASES REPORTED IN 2016 "This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics," said Dr. Gwenda Hughes, from Public Health England, to the BBC. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirths, severe eye infections in babies and infertility in both men and women. In the United States, there are approximately 300,000 reported cases of gonorrhea each year. But because infected people often have no symptoms, the actual number of cases is likely closer to 600,000, according to Reuters.
CHIROPRACTIC: Breaking the code of disease. One of the greatest rewards that a doctor of any type can have is helping someone recover their health. When we stopped taking care of ourselves like we should, it just a matter of time before we realize our mistake. Sometimes we don’t appreciate our health until we lose it. One of the tools that we have found very effective in “breaking the code of disease” is Vega testing. We have been able to help a multitude of patients recover their health after other methods have failed. One thing that’s important to realize is drugs primarily cover your symptoms. If you don’t fix the underlying cause and allow healing to take place, then you’re just giving disease time to develop into a more serious condition. I see that it has been some time since your last visit and I would like to encourage you to take a proactive stance concerning your health. Health is the best insurance you can have. Besides eating right for your body type, getting some type of regular movement (exercise), chiropractic adjustments and nutritional therapy are some of the most powerful tools in health recovery and maintenance. Are you noticing your performance and energy less than you would desire? Are you ignoring some reoccurring symptoms/pain or having issues with sleep or digestion? IN THE NEWS: Why Most People Need Vitamin B12 Supplementation According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, nearly 40 percent of the U.S. population have marginal vitamin B12 status and 9 percent are deficient. Vitamin B12 insufficiency and deficiency increase your risk of serious health problems, many of which mimic more serious neurological diseases and can easily lead to misdiagnosis and improper treatment. B12 is required for many vital biological functions, including production of adrenal hormones, metabolizing fat, carbs and folate, formation of red blood cells, iron absorption, nervous system function, cognitive health and much more. B12 deficiency can even affect a woman’s Pap test, which screens for cervical cancer. Low B12 can affect the appearance of cervical cells, which can result in a false positive. Animal foods have become a questionable source of B12 thanks to modern farming practices, and many experts now believe most people really need to take a B12 supplement to ensure healthy B12 status.
WELLNESS: Natural Ways To Ease Nasal Allergies 1. Use A Natural Nasal Spray A growing number of studies suggest that xlear/xylitol nasal spray may be more effective at treating and preventing allergy symptoms than standard nasal sprays. 2. Essential Oils Many essential oils have anti-inflammatory properties, which can help reduce irritation and inflammation in your nasal passages. Favorite way to get these benefits is by diffusing a couple drops each of lemon, lavender, and peppermint essential oils to a diffuser. 3. Change Your Air Filter Your HVAC system has a filter that helps to trap dust, dirt, pollen, pet dander, and other allergens. Call Keefe Clinic and order a filter through us, it lasts a lifetime with proper cleaning. 4. Wear Sunglasses When you do go outside during the springtime (or whenever you’re suffering from seasonal allergies), wear sunglasses. Your shades can provide a barrier that may help keep pollen and other allergens out of your eyes, which can help reduce your symptoms. 5. Exercise Indoors Exercising is important, but doing it outside when you’re suffering from seasonal allergies is only going to make things worse. 6. Eat Probiotics Probiotic foods are packed with good bacteria, and those good bacteria can be very beneficial. Not only do they aid in digestion, but recent studies suggest they may even help reduce allergy symptoms too. This link is still being studied, but increasing your consumption of probiotic foods like yogurt, sauerkraut, and kimchi certainly can’t hurt! 7. Keep Pets Off Beds As much as you may love to snuggle with your pets, this can do more harm than good where seasonal allergies are concerned. If your pets go outside during the day, they can get pollen trapped in their fur. If they transfer that pollen into your bed, it will likely turn you into an itchy, sneezy mess while you sleep. So fight the urge to snuggle in bed with your pets, at least until your seasonal allergies have subsided for the year! 8. Eat Local Honey Another natural remedy that may be worth trying is eating a small amount of local honey (meaning honey produced locally in your area) every day. Some people believe that because local honey contains local pollen, that eating the honey will help your body develop an immunity to it. At Keefe Clinic we have an allergy mix that contains the pollens for this area. Very effective.
CHIROPRACTIC: Carpal tunnel syndrome Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome may include: Numbness, tingling, burning, and pain—primarily in the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers, Occasional shock-like sensations that radiate to the thumb and index, middle, and ring fingers, Pain or tingling that may travel up the forearm toward the shoulder, Weakness and clumsiness in the hand—this may make it difficult to perform fine movements such as buttoning your clothes, Dropping things—due to weakness, numbness, or a loss of proprioception (awareness of where your hand is in space). In most cases, the symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome begin gradually—without a specific injury. There is a connective tissue tunnel within the wrist that nerves pass through to get to the fingers sometimes this area can swell and sometimes there is damage to the connective tissue itself. This is a fairly good success rate with chiropractic care which saves the need for surgery that might just trigger other surgeries because of the surgical trauma to the area. The nerves that pass through the carpal tunnel come from the neck and go through the shoulder and elbow on the way to the fingers. Misalignments in any of these areas can set you up for carpal tunnel syndrome. If you or someone you know has symptoms like these we can help. Call for an appointment today.

IN THE NEWS: TOXINS HIDDEN IN YOUR HOUSE Did you know that the regular use of cleaning products can have as much impact on your lungs as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day? The American Thoracic Society's American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine recently reported that scientists at Norway’s University of Bergen tracked 6,000 people, with an average age of 34 at the time of enrollment in the study, who used cleaning products over a period of twenty years. They found that lung function decline in women, who regularly used cleaning products, was equivalent over the period to those with a 20-cigarette daily smoking habit. That's a pack a day. And these cleaning substances have the added threat of fueling the most prevalent type of Alzheimer’s, Inhalational Alzheimer’s. NOTE: the health food store has several safe alternatives to help clean your house, clothes and yourself. Buyer beware.
WELLNESS: HERBS FOR STRESS AND WELLNESS Your adrenal glands secrete more than 50 hormones, including aldosterone (which helps regulate your blood pressure), cortisol and adrenaline, the latter two of which can become overactivated by stress. Exposure to chronic inflammation or long-term illness can result in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, triggering symptoms associated with “adrenal fatigue”. Adaptogenic herbs can be useful if you’re struggling with persistent stress. Four of the most well-recognized adaptogens for adrenal support are ashwagandha, rhodiola, ginseng (Asian and Siberian) and tulsi. Ashwagandha helps your body adapt to stress by balancing your immune system, metabolism and hormonal systems. The root contains the highest concentration of active ingredients that modulate hormones, including thyroid hormone, estrogen, progesterone and testosterone. Rhodiola has been shown to be particularly beneficial for your nervous system. It has antidepressant and antianxiety benefits, and has been shown to reduce symptoms of burnout associated with work stress.
CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC AND DNA REPAIR Can regular Chiropractic care affect you on a genetic level? The answer is yes. But how? DNA is the molecule of life. It contains our genes which make us what we are. DNA makes up our chromosomes which are held in the nucleus of our cells. DNA is very fragile and susceptible to damage from environmental stresses. It is estimated that our cells experience anywhere from 1,000 to 1,000,000 incidences of DNA damage PER DAY. If this DNA damage is left and not repaired, our DNA sequences cannot be read or will not be read properly. This will result in abnormal cell function or expression. Three things can the occur; senescence, which means the cells stop dividing, cell death and/or tumor growth. All three are not good things as they lead to poor health and premature aging. Going through life, we experience physical, chemical, and emotional dis-stress. These stresses affect the function of the nervous system. The investigators hypothesized that these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level. Oxidative stress, metabolically generating free radicals, is now a broadly accepted theory of how we age and develop disease. Oxidative stress results in DNA damage, and inhibits DNA repair. The good news is that our cells are equipped with numerous enzymes (too many to list) whose job it is to continually repair this DNA damage. This DNA repair can be measured through blood tests that measure serum Thiol levels. The serum Thiol level is an indicator of the level of DNA repair. The higher serum Thiol, the more DNA repair and the better your health and aging. In a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, chiropractors collaborating with researchers at the University of Lund found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair. These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care. The researchers measured serum thiol levels in 25 patients under short term chiropractic care, and 21 patients under long term chiropractic care. The results were compared to those of a non-chiropractic control group of 30 subjects. Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplements. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels than patients with active disease, and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values in non-chiropractic subjects. Serum thiols are primary antioxidants, and serve as a measure of human health status . The test provides a surrogate estimate of DNA repair enzyme activity, which has been shown to correlate with lifespan and aging. After you have completed corrective Chiropractic care you need Wellness care to maximize your health potentials. Ask about Wellness care.

IN THE NEWS:. WHEN THE STATE CONTROLS WHAT YOU EAT In Canada, it’s illegal to sell or give away raw milk, a law that’s enforced in many provinces. In Ontario, distributing raw milk was long considered to be a regulatory offense punishable by fines, but as of January 2018 an order issued by Ontario’s Superior Court calls for anyone who distributes or sells raw milk in the area to face years in prison. Members of one area food co-op believe the Ontario injunction violates their constitutional right to access raw milk, and they’ve filed a motion to have the injunction stayed. In the meantime, the co-op has been forced to stop distributing the milk in order to avoid criminal charges, feeding it to pigs and chickens instead of handing it out to co-op members. Raw dairy farmers have been put out of business for mere suspicion of contamination. Even in the absence of a complaint of contamination, farmers and consumers are often harassed over the buying and selling of raw milk. In contrast, Blue Bell Creamery — the third-largest ice cream maker in the U.S. whose ice cream sickened 10 people with listeria, three of whom died as a result, in 2015, was fined just $175,000 for the incident. Ultimately, the choice of what to eat should belong to the individual consumer, not the state or federal government. If the FDA and other government agencies are allowed to impose their view of "safe food" on consumers, raw milk won't be the only thing lost — one day virtually all food could be pasteurized, irradiated and/or genetically engineered.
WELLNESS: SUPERFOOD OF THE WEEK: CHERRIES. Famed for their anti-inflammatory superpowers, cherries are the hottest stone fruit on the block. ... They're also packed with anthocyanins, a powerful phytonutrient that jump-starts your immune system and gives cherries that gorgeous red hue. Cherries are a favorite summer treat with a number of valuable health benefits, thanks to their antioxidants and powerful anti-inflammatory compounds. Both sweet and tart cherries are easy to grow. Cherry trees will grow about 1 foot per year, start producing fruit in two to four years and can produce anywhere from 150 to 300 pounds of cherries per tree per year once fully mature. Tart cherry trees are self-pollinating and can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 4, 5 and 6. They require about 1,000 chill hours below 45 degrees F during winter months. Tart cherries contain two powerful compounds, anthocyanins and bioflavonoids, which help prevent and relieve arthritis and gout. Sweet cherries such as Bing are also useful against gout, as they lower both uric acid and C-reactive protein levels. Sweet cherry is suitable for USDA zones 5 through 9, and need about 150 to 300 chill hours during winter months. Northwest Oklahoma is a 6 where the middle of the state including Tulsa is a 7 and the southern East tip of Oklahoma is an 8 hardiness zone. Self-pollinating cultivars include Stella, Black Gold and North Star. Others may need companion trees to ensure successful pollination. To keep birds from flying away with your harvest, cover the tree with netting as the fruit starts to form. Planting mulberry trees nearby can also help lure birds away from your cherry trees, but won’t prevent them from eating your cherries as well.
CHIROPRACTIC: Disease care vs. healthcare--Healthcare has undergone a change in the past 100+ years. Diet and herbal therapy along with other more natural treatments were a form of healthcare practice by most doctors. With the advent of antibiotics and the ability to convert herbs into powerful drugs healthcare made a major switch. This idea that we could control disease through drugs gained acceptance. There is no question within crisis care that drug therapy really shines. If your heart stops on the operating table a shot of adrenaline could save your life. Unfortunately this has led to a major change in healthcare. Instead of diet, exercise, vitamins or herbal treatment the idea that you could control all diseases through drugs took over healthcare. Unfortunately we have found that this is not the case in most instances. It’s true that an antibiotic used to be able to wipe out infections that otherwise killed people in the past. Unfortunately that’s becoming less and less of a miracle and turning into more of a nightmare. The problem is the overutilization of antibiotics has led to bacterial resistance diseases where the patient dies even with IVs of antibiotics pumping into their bloodstream. Antibiotics weaken the immune system not strengthening it. Herbs were very powerful back in the day but when chemist found that they could isolate the active ingredient in herbs and make it synthetically it produced stronger effects. But because all the synergistic properties of the herb were left on the table side effects became a growing problem. When you took the herb it would produce health benefits but when you took the synthetic active ingredient those benefits were increased along with side effects. Today over 2000 people a week die from side effects from the prescriptions they get from their medical doctors. And the other problem is drugs don’t heal. Insulin doesn’t heal diabetes, heart drugs don’t heal the heart they just modify the symptoms, antidepressants don’t heal the mind they just alter your perceptions. With the advancement in natural healthcare not only can these issues be treated they can be corrected in time because of the use of nutrients that fix the underlying problem. Find the problem, fix the problem is the approach in natural healthcare whereas find the symptom, suppress the symptom is the approach in drug therapy. Choose your healthcare wisely.

IN THE NEWS: The Nitric Oxide Dump Do you have three or four minutes, one to three times a day, to devote to your health? By using that time to engage in one of the best high-intensity exercises out there — the Nitric Oxide Dump — you can improve your mitochondrial health, slowing down age-related muscle decline. The fact is, if you live in the U.S. and work full time, you sit an average of 13 hours a day, then sleep for an average of eight.1 This means you're sedentary 21 hours of the day! The Nitric Oxide Dump workout stimulates your body’s release of nitric oxide (NO), improving your mitochondrial health, slowing down age-related muscle decline and boosting heart health. It involves just four movements — squats, alternating arm raises, non-jumping jacks and shoulder presses — which are done in repetitions of 10, with four sets each. The workout takes just three or four minutes and should be repeated three times a day, with a minimum of two hours between sessions. Squats (10) Begin by standing with your feet hip-width apart, feet parallel, toes pointing forward and the weight of your body distributed evenly between your heels and the ball of your foot. Perform 10 squats in rapid sequence, keeping your quadriceps engaged. Your butt should move back as though you're going to sit in a chair while your arms move forward for balance. You can do a shallower squat if you have knee or back pain. Alternating Arm Raises (10) Alternate swinging your arms at a 90-degree angle. Keep your form tight and your muscles controlled, avoiding swinging your arms too high or too low This will work a number of muscles in your deltoids, which are the rounded, triangular-shaped muscles on the uppermost part of your arm and the top of your shoulder. Non-Jumping Jacks (10) Begin standing straight with your arms down, fists touching in front of your pelvis. Use a broad rotation, circle your arms upward on each side to touch your fists over your head. Circle back down to hit your fists at the bottom and repeat 10 times. If you have shoulder problems with your rotator cuffs, try this variation instead: Start with your hands at a prayer position in front of your chest. Keep your hands pressed together lightly as you extend them above your head. Circle your arms out to the sides to release before bringing them back to the prayer position. Repeat 10 times. Shoulder Presses (10) Bring fists above your shoulders on either side of your head, elbows bent. Extend your arms straight above your head. Return to position with fists just over your shoulders and repeat 10 times. When you're done, you should feel your fingertips tingling, and this is a great sign because it means nitric oxide is freely flowing through your body.

CHIROPRACTIC: ONE OF THE FUNDAMENTALS FOR HEALTH To stay healthy diet, exercise, rest and relaxation are some of the components that are important. To be healthy means your body is functioning properly. Function depends on the nervous system, it’s the nervous system that tell glands to secrete their hormones or enzymes, it’s the nervous system that regulates your immune system, it’s the nervous system that performs the miracle of upright posture and walking. You nervous system can slowly become compromised by misalignments and other structural stresses that you could be completely unaware of as they develop. That’s why most health problems come on slowly over a period of time. When you get adjusted you release the intelligence within the body to better regulate and control. If you are needing more hormones the nervous system will accomplish that or if you needing more enzymes to digest your foods the nervous system regulates that as well. Patients who get regular chiropractic care become stronger and healthier over time. Once the pain is gone or maybe some other symptom doesn’t mean your body doesn’t need to continue chiropractic adjustments. Your spine is stressed from daily activities from improper lifting to improper sitting posture or even sleep posture. When you’re under stress muscles tighten up which put your spine under even more stress. When you nervous system can properly regulate and control your body then you stay in a lot better health. Stay regular with care it pays big dividends.
On my way home from work, I stopped at Taco Bell for a quick bite to eat. In my billfold are a $50 bill and a $2 bill. I figure that with a $2 bill, I can get something to eat and not have to worry about anyone getting irritated at me for trying to break a $50 bill.
Me: "Hi, I'd like one seven-layer burrito please, to go."
Server: "That'll be $1.04. Eat in?"
Me: "No, it's to go." At this point, I open my billfold and hand him the $2 bill. He looks at it kind of funny.
Server: "Uh, hang on a sec, I'll be right back."He goes to talk to his manager, who is still within my earshot. The following conversation occurs between the two of them:
Server: "Hey, you ever see a $2 bill?"
Manager: "No. A what?"
Server: "A $2 bill. This guy just gave it to me."
Manager: "Ask for something else. There's no such thing as a $2 bill."
Server: "Yeah, thought so."
He comes back to me and says, "We don't take these. Do you have anything else?"
Me: "Just this fifty. You don't take $2 bills? Why?"
Server: "I don't know."
Me: "See here where it says legal tender?"
Me: "So, why won't you take it?"
Server: "Well, hang on a sec."
He goes back to his manager, who has been watching me like I'm a shoplifter, and says to him, "He says I have to take it."
Manager: "Doesn't he have anything else?"
Server: "Yeah, a fifty. I'll get it and you can open the safe and get change."
Manager: "I'm not opening the safe with him in here.
"Server: "What should I do?"
Manager: "Tell him to come back later when he has real money."
Server: "I can't tell him that! You tell him."
Manager: "Just tell him."
Server: "No way! This is weird. I'm going in back."
The manager approaches me and says, "I'm sorry, but we don't take big bills this time of night."
Me: "It's only seven o'clock! Well then, here's a two dollar bill."
Manager: "We don't take those, either."
Me: "Why not?"
Manager: "I think you know why."
Me: "No really... tell me why."
Manager: "Please leave before I call mall security."
Me: "Excuse me?"
Manager: "Please leave before I call mall security."
Me: "What on earth for?"
Manager: "Please, sir."
Me: "Uh, go ahead, call them."
Manager: "Would you please just leave?"
Manager: "Fine -- have it your way then."
Me: "Hey, that's Burger King, isn't it?"
At this point, he backs away from me and calls mall security on the phone around the corner. I have two people staring at me from the dining area, and I begin laughing out loud, just for effect. A few minutes later this 45-year-oldish guy comes in.
Guard: "Yeah, Mike, what's up?"
Manager (whispering): "This guy is trying to give me some (pause) funny money."
Guard: "No kidding! What?"
Manager: "Get this... a two dollar bill."
Guard (incredulous): "Why would a guy fake a two dollar bill?"
Manager: "I don't know. He's kinda weird. He says the only other thing he has is a fifty."
Guard: "Oh, so the fifty's fake!"
Manager: "No, the two dollar bill is."
Guard: "Why would he fake a two dollar bill?"
Manager: "I don't know! Can you talk to him, and get him out of here?"
Security Guard walks over to me and...
Guard: "Mike here tells me you have some fake bills you're trying to use."
Me: "Uh, no."
Guard: "Lemme see 'em."
Guard: "Do you want me to get the cops in here?"
At this point I am ready to say, "Sure, please!" but I want to eat, so I say, "I'm just trying to buy a burrito and pay for it with this two dollar bill."
I put the bill up near his face, and he flinches like I'm taking a swing at him. He takes the bill, turns it over a few times in his hands, and says, "Hey, Mike, what's wrong with this bill?"
Manager: "It's fake."
Guard: "It doesn't look fake to me."
Manager: "But it's a two dollar bill."
Guard: "Yeah... ?"
Manager: "Well, there's no such thing, is there?"
The security guard and I both look at him like he's an idiot, and it dawns on the guy that he has no clue.
So, it turns out that my burrito was free, and he threw in a small drink and some of those cinnamon thingies, too.
This all made me want to get a whole stack of two dollar bills just to see what happens when I try to buy stuff. If I got the right group of people, I could probably end up in jail. You get free food there, too!

IN THE NEWS: What are the best foods to fight aging? EDAMAME, or fresh soybeans, have been a staple of Asian cuisine for generations, the beans are rich in isoflavones, a type of phytoestrogen – that is. plant-derived, estrogen-like substances. Isoflavones are known to have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-cancer, and antimicrobial properties. CARROTS This common culinary ingredient, best known in its orange variety, is famously recommended for its high content of beta-carotene, a pigment — and carotenoid — that gives the widespread version of this root vegetable its color.Beta-carotene can be converted by our bodies into vitamin A, which, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), "is involved in immune function, vision, reproduction, and cellular communication." Our bodies cannot produce vitamin A on their own, so it must be derived from our diet. moreover, research has shown that foods rich in carotenoids — and, of course, carrots are a prime example here — can protect against age-related macular degeneration, the vision damage caused by old age. CRUCIFEROUS VEGETABLES Another important type of food on our list are cruciferous vegetables — also known as "Brassica vegetables" — which include a wide array of green foods, such as cabbage, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, radish, and kale. These vegetables boast an especially rich nutrient content, including many vitamins (C, E, K, and folate), minerals (potassium, calcium, and selenium), and carotenoids (lutein, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin). Cruciferous vegetables also contain glucosinolates, some glucosinolates seem to regulate the body's stress and inflammation response; they have antimicrobial properties, and some of them are being investigated for their anti-cancer potential.
WELLNESS: Reducing stress naturally Stress can be a factor in the breakdown of the body and the development of certain disease processes. Stress has different factors emotional, chemical, structural/neurological and physical. One of the benefits of chiropractic adjustments is that patients report caring less stress in their body. This can have a ramification on the quality of sleep and how well a person handles other life stresses. One type of emotional stress is replaying certain traumas in a subconscious way. This can show up as avoiding certain activities like driving, meeting new people or new experiences. The Emotional Freedom Technique is a tool we use to help eliminate the subconscious stressors. It allows the body to release these programs that are being replayed at the subconscious level thus allowing people to overcome phobias and other things that produce stress. Just improving diet and detoxing the body can improve stress handling considerably. If you feel like stress is taking over we can help. Talk to us today about any issues you feel are affecting your health.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Why Americans Love Chiropractic Findings from the most recent National Health Interview Survey providing data on the use of chiropractic and other complementary health care approaches by U.S. adults reveals why Americans utilize chiropractic and what they value most. The survey provides data on lifetime (54.6 million; 24%) and 12-month (19.1 million; 8.4%) use of chiropractic services and various sociodemographic characteristics. But the most intriguing data illuminates the primary reasons for visiting a doctor of chiropractic and the perceived health and wellness benefits received by chiropractic users. Why visit a chiropractor? Here's why: Reasons for Visiting a Chiropractor For general wellness / disease prevention: 43.6%-To improve energy: 16.3% -To improve athletic or sports performance: 15.4%-To improve immune function: 11.4%-To improve memory or concentration: 5.3% Benefits of Chiropractic Improves overall health or makes feel better: 66.9%-Helps to sleep better: 41.9%-Helps to reduce stress level or to relax: 40.2%-Makes it easier to cope with health problems: 38.5%-Gives a sense of control over own health: 32.5%-Helps to feel better emotionally: 27.4% Why Not Just See an Medical Doctor? Chiropractic treats the cause and not just the symptoms: 61.9%-Chiropractic is natural: 37.5%-Medical treatments do not work for specific health problem: 33.8%-Chiropractic focuses on the whole person: 24.9%-Medications cause side effects: 18.1% So, let's recap: U.S. adults visit doctors of chiropractic for a variety of health and wellness reasons (not just when they have back pain); the majority find it "very important" or "somewhat important" in maintaining their overall health and well-being, yet most all believe it is effective in helping their specific health problems; and chiropractic presents an all-natural, drug-free alternative to traditional medical care. Someone you know needs chiropractic!
FUNNY BONE: An Uber passenger tapped the driver on the shoulder to ask him a question. The driver screamed, lost control of the car, nearly hit a bus, went up on the footpath, and stopped inches from a shop window. For a second everything went quiet in the cab, then the driver said, "Look man, don't ever do that again. You scared the daylights out of me!" The passenger apologized and said, "I didn't realize that a little tap would scare you so much." The driver replied, "Sorry, it’s not really your fault. Today is my first day as an Uber driver – I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years."@@ Walking up to a department store's fabric counter, the pretty girl said, "I would like to buy this material for my new dress. How much does it cost?" "Only one kiss per yard," replied the male clerk with a smirk on his face. "That's fine," said the girl. "I'll take ten yards." With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the clerk quickly measured out the cloth, wrapped it up, then teasingly held it out. The girl snapped up the package, pointed to the old man behind her, and smiled, "Grandpa's gonna pay the bill."

IN THE NEWS: Please Don't Be Conned by This Health Fraud, No Matter How Much You Want to Trust It Conflicts of interest between government and industry allow dangerous drugs to be approved and aggressively marketed. The drug industry also spends billions a year on TV ads — revenue from just nine prescription drugs was worth $100 million in one year — which also stifles negative news stories about Pharma. Even so-called “public” media like PBS and NPR have accepted money from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and UnitedHealthcare. Similar conflicts of interest exist at medical journals, universities, medical associations, advocacy groups and government agencies, including those that are supposed to regulate the drug industry. The result is the Ghost in the Machine that we live with today — deceived patients taking expensive, often dangerous drugs and soaring health costs. Advertising revenues and industry board members prevent mainstream media from reporting on Pharma corruption. Because of Pharma influence in academia and publishing, a lot of health research is biased and misleading. This is how Dr. Terrence Norchi, president and CEO of Arch Therapeutics, explains the profitable new partnerships. “For the past 15 years, the pipelines of the big [drug] companies have been drying up ... At the same time, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on academic institutions in this country and abroad. To survive, many universities will have to find creative ways to make themselves more relevant. There are opportunities to mutually solve these challenges between academia and industry.” Such Pharma/academia partnerships date back to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, which allowed universities to "patent discoveries that stem from government-funded research and then license them exclusively to companies in return for royalties," wrote Marcia Angell, former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine and Harvard lecturer, in the Boston Review. Natural, safer and less expensive treatments are discredited by mainstream medicine, raising everyone's health care costs.

IN THE NEWS: Our Bodies Have So Many More Cancer-Causing Chemicals Than We Thought An estimated 1.7 million people will be diagnosed with cancer in 2016. While some of this is rooted in sheer genetics, many of these cases may be sparked by substances in the air, soil, food, and materials around us. A new report released today by the Environmental Working Group shows just how many of these substances end up inside of us. Pulling data from places like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, EWG detected up to 420 possible carcinogens—the name for cancer-causing agents—in people's bodies. NOTE: Is there cancer in your family? Even if the answer to that is no you should still drink clean water, try to eat clean food (reduce junk food and increase fresh fruits and vegetables and even consider organic), clean air machines in your home can reduce pollution.
WELLNESS: A POTENTIAL LINK BETWEEN CELL PHONE USE AND CANCER – JUNE 5, 2016 Use of cell phones is so deeply associated with our lifestyle that we often forget that these devices were almost nonexistent a decade ago. Therefore, we don’t have much feedback on their potentially harmful effects on health. Cell phones emit radio frequency radiation in very close proximity with our heads and it is still not clear if that radiation may present health issues. Researchers from the National Toxicology Program (NTP) were asked by the US government to investigate this question. They published a preliminary report on their findings on the association between radio frequency exposure through cell phone use and cancer. They exposed groups of 90 rats, separated by gender, to 3 different doses of radio frequency radiations (1.5, 3 and 6 W/Kg) for 9 hours per day, for 2 years. They found a higher incidence of brain (glioblastoma) and heart (Schwannoma) tumours in male rodents exposed to the radiation. Note: Not all people have the same susceptibility, we can test you on your cell phone plus there are phone covers that protect from this type of radiation.
CHIROPRACTIC: How Does Chiropractic Work? Many people seek chiropractic care when their back goes out or their neck tightens up. But how does this form of care actually work? What are the benefits of receiving chiropractic care for nerve dysfunction compared with other healthcare options? Let’s take a look! First, let’s discuss how the nervous system “works.” We have three divisions of the nervous system: the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, and it’s essentially the main processing portion of the nervous system. The spinal cord is like a multi-lane highway that brings information to the brain for processing (sensory division) and returns information back to the toes, feet, legs, and upper extremities from which the information originated (motor division). For example, hiking on a mountain trail or simply walking requires constant input to and from the CNS so we can adjust our balance accordingly and not fall. These “sensory-motor pathways” are essential and allow us to complete our daily tasks in an efficient, safe manner as information is constantly bouncing back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes a similar sensory/motor “two-way street” system relaying information back and forth from our toes/feet/legs and fingers/hands/arms to the spinal cord (CNS). And if this isn’t complicated enough, we also have “reflexes” that, for example, allow us to QUICKLY pull our hand away from a hot stove to minimize burning our fingers. Reflexes allow the information to “skip” the brain’s processing part so quicker reactions can occur. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions that basically “run” our automatic (organ) functions like breathing, heart rate, digestion, hormonal output, and more. There is constant communication between the ANS, PNS, and CNS that allow us to function in a normal, balanced way… unless something disrupts them. There are obvious conditions that interfere with this communication process that include (but are not limited to) diabetes (with neuropathy), frost bitten or burned fingers, peripheral nerve damage from conditions like carpal/cubital tunnel syndromes, thoracic outlet syndrome, and/or pinched nerves in the neck, mid-back, low-back spinal regions, as well as conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, after a stroke (spinal cord or brain), and after trauma with resulting fractures where nerve, spinal cord, and/or brain damage can occur. These are “obvious” reasons for delayed or blocked neurotransmission. There are many other less obvious injuries or conditions that can result in faulty neuromotor patterns and nerve transmission of which chiropractic services can benefit. The “subluxation complex” is a term some chiropractors use to describe the compromised nerve transmission that may occur if a nerve is compressed or irritated due to faulty bone or joint position along the nerve’s course. Reducing such nerve compression typically allows for a restoration of function. A good illustration of this is a patient who suffers from a herniated disk in the neck with numbness and tingling down the arm to the hand. The goal of treatment (for all healthcare professionals) is to remove the pinch of the nerve. To realize this goal, doctors of chiropractic utilize spinal manipulation and mobilization in addition to other non-surgical, non-drug approaches that may include exercises, nutritional advice, home-care such as a cervical traction unit, and other anti-inflammatory measures (ice, modalities like low level and class IV laser, electric stimulation, pulsed magnetic field, and more). Given the minimal side-effect risks and well-reported benefits, it only makes sense to try chiropractic FIRST and if you’re not satisfied, your doctor will help you find the next level of care.

IN THE NEWS: Researchers Uncover Link Between Immune Function And Osteoarthritic Pain And Progression The study, published in the medical journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, found that monocytes, the white blood cells necessary to regulate immune responses, were more activated and pro-inflammatory in women with osteoarthritis, and that elevated inflammation and body mass index were associated with this increased activation. Chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and depression among adults with OA. While the cause of OA remains unknown, multiple factors contribute to its risk, progression and severity. Today is the day to change your diet because the day you have a heart attack or diagnosed with cancer it could be too late. Junk food is the biggest cause of inflammation in the body. Vega testing is an excellent way to determine which of these products your body might need. Nobody needs all of these. Also non-GMO foods and organic foods would be smart if you're dealing with advanced memory issues. The use of Stevia over artificial sweeteners would be recommended and artificial food coloring and other food additives could be an issue. Eat foods in their natural state. Activities that help: Exercise, learn something new, avoid toxic chemicals, toxic metals, PCBs, deal with stress, deal with depression, avoid processed foods and alcohol, the Mediterranean diet, the ketogenic diet, calories restricted diet, the Paleo diet, In a UCLA study, patients made dramatic lifestyle changes. They avoided simple carbs, gluten and processed foods. They increased their fish intake, took yoga and meditated. They were instructed to take melatonin, get adequate sleep, incorporate vitamin B-12, vitamin D-3 and fish oil. Within six months, nine of the 10 memory-loss patients saw a noticeable improvement in memory. One patient, who was in the late stages of Alzheimer's, did not show improvement. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: LONGEVITY, DNA REPAIR AND CHIROPRACTIC DNA is the molecule of life. Three things can then occur; senescence, which means the cells stop dividing, cell death and/or tumor growth. All three are not good things as they lead to poor health and premature aging. Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplementation. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels than patients with active disease, and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values in non-chiropractic subjects. Wellness care pays big benefits

IN THE NEWS: Study finds overweight teenage girls and young women have a high risk of heart disease An alarming 30 per cent of surveyed women were found to have high blood pressure - with the same percentage of participants also overweight or obese - according to research undertaken by the Royal Women's Hospital and University of Melbourne. Females as young as 16 recorded high blood pressure, greatly increasing their risk of heart disease or stroke in the future. Dr Subasinghe also said the choices women make in their teens and early 20s are crucial to future health. 'We know obesity has a detrimental impact on the health of our nation but it was quite shocking to see such high levels of blood pressure in this young age group of otherwise healthy women,' she said. 'We also found that high physical activity was strongly associated with a reduced risk of elevated blood pressure, so I would encourage all young women to consider their own lifestyle behaviours and habits today and what changes they could make to improve their heart health for the future.' Heart disease kills four times more Australian women than breast cancer, according to figures from Heart Research Australia - making it the second biggest killer in the country after dementia. NOTE: Inflammation is the key to heart disease ask the front desk for an anti-inflammatory foods list.
WELLNESS: COLLARD GREENS are a close relative of kale and packed with many of the same nutrients found in all dark leafy greens: vitamins K, A and C, as well as calcium. Collard greens (Brassica oleracea acephala) are considered to be a descendent of loose-leafed wild cabbage found in in many parts of Europe more than 2,000 years ago. Nicknamed collards, these dark leafy greens are part of the cruciferous vegetable family. Some of the close relatives of collards are: Bok choy, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Kale. Because conventional collard crops may be treated with pesticides, you should always buy organic or, better yet, grow your own. Collards are easy to grow and can be harvested twice a year due to their high frost tolerance; some suggest a touch of frost lends collards a sweeter taste. Collard greens possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cancer-fighting and cholesterol-reducing properties, making it a healthy addition to most diets. In general, regularly consuming large amounts of collard greens may not be advisable if you: Have a thyroid problem: Collards contain goitrogens, which have been shown to interfere with iodine absorption when consumed in large amounts. Suffer from oxalate kidney stones: Intake of high-oxalate foods, particularly beet greens, spinach and Swiss chard, and collards to a lesser degree, is thought to be a causative factor in the development of kidney stones. Take anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin: The high amount of vitamin K found in collards may be concerning because vitamin K plays a major role in blood clotting. "In a recent study, steamed collard greens outshined steamed kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage in terms of its ability to bind bile acids in the digestive tract. When this bile-acid binding takes place, it is easier for the bile acids to be excreted from the body. Since bile acids are made from cholesterol, the net impact of this bile-acid binding is a lowering of the body's cholesterol level. It's worth noting that steamed collards show much greater bile-acid binding ability than raw collards." Collards also pack a wealth of cancer-fighting glucosinolates that support healthy detoxification and fight inflammation. Notably, collards are rich in phytonutrients such as di-indolyl-methane and sulforaphane, which have been shown to both inhibit cancer cell growth and kill cancer cells, especially with respect to breast, cervical, colon, prostate and ovarian cancer.
CHIROPRACTIC: IN SEARCH OF NATURAL HEALTH Health is a natural expression of a normally functioning body. In order for an illness to get a foothold the normal function of the body has to be compromised. Chiropractic has discovered factors that can compromise body health which include: altered communication within the body due to misalignments, toxins from the environment and accumulating toxins due to poor body housekeeping, hormone imbalances related to dysfunctions within the body and disruptors from our foods and environment, faulty regulation of stress hormones due to a lack of exercise, rest and relaxation and the lack of proper building blocks due to faulty diet. When we see a patient who suffers from a specific health concern one of our jobs is determined which of the previous issues are in effect. You will notice none of the issues presented included the deficiency of pharmaceutical drugs. There are rare cases where genetics, permanent damage from injuries and other factors would require drugs and surgery as a first approach. In the vast majority of cases the first approach should be the Five Laws of Health: diet, exercise, positive mental and spiritual attitude, rest and relaxation and the removal of communication interference through spinal adjusting. If your nervous system can’t control and coordinate properly then you will never be in good health. But if you’re nervous system doesn’t have the building blocks i.e. nutrients in order to control and coordinate good health and that will be a limiting factor. At Keefe Clinic we try to utilize a holistic approach in order to address the different factors limiting the expression of vibrant health and thus restoring health naturally.

That’s terrible….But couldn’t you find someone else, a friend, relative or even a neighbour to take her seat?’ The man shakes his head. ‘No,’ he says. ‘They’re all at the funeral.’

Looking at the 10 top reasons people seek healthcare
There's a lot of misinformation, politics and deception in healthcare and as a patient it can be difficult to make educated decisions. There are really only two types of healthcare in the United States, allopathic medicine and natural healthcare. Allopathic medicine focuses on drugs and surgery whereas natural healthcare focuses on enhancing body function, diet, exercise etc. (See our posts on the natural laws of health)
I thought, as a healthcare consumer, you might simply want to see the different approaches with the 10 most common reasons people see doctors of any type.
Cholesterol leads the list. Most of you are probably aware of the drugs that are used for cholesterol as you see their advertisements 50 times a day on television and radio as well as print media. What you might not know is how the drugs work.
I believe that you need to understand 80% of the cholesterol in your blood your liver made. That means only 20% comes from diet. Even so diet can lead to the stress factors that promote the liver to make cholesterol. So in natural healthcare our focus is on establishing a healthy liver. Whereas the drugs for cholesterol actually make your liver a little sick. The sick liver doesn't make as much cholesterol and thus your cholesterol numbers fall.
In natural healthcare we don't see that is making much sense. Plus the statistics don't show it makes a big difference in lifespan. You can't be healthy by making parts of your body sick so in natural healthcare we identify the proper diet that a person needs and also the nutrients the liver needs in order to establish normal cholesterol levels. I will let you decide which of these approaches makes more sense.
Acid reflux is the next major reason people visit physicians. Most of you know that antacids are the number one approach allopathic medicine uses. Digestion is a complicated system and I encourage you to read our pamphlet on acid reflux to fully understand the process. Is acid reflux caused by a lack of antacids in our diet? Chronic antacid use causes malnutrition because it suppresses your body's normal digestive process. In natural healthcare we work at reestablishing a normal digestive system because any organ in the digestive system can be a source of acid reflux if it is operating abnormally. If you take antacids you need to ask yourself what organ is that correcting? Of course it's not correcting anything it's just suppressing symptoms at a cost. The cost to your digestive process and your nutritional status and thus your health.
Depression. The most common allopathic approach is to use drugs that manipulate neurotransmitters. Depression is a complex condition that can have several sources of malfunction within the body. Antidepressants do not correct these problems. At best an antidepressant might artificially alter certain neurotransmitters. Did you know your neurotransmitters are made by amino acids from your diet? In natural healthcare there are many nutrients that we might work with in reestablishing normal neurotransmitter levels. For instance with serotonin L-tryptophan is a very common amino acid that might be deficient. And so instead of artificially trying to alter the serotonin level in natural healthcare we would give the body what it needs to make more serotonin. Again other neurotransmitters and other health issues like hormone imbalances or blood sugar imbalances could be involved in this. In natural healthcare we would address those underlying causes. Antidepressants do not correct any of these underlying causes.
Osteoarthritis. Of course allopathic medicine uses dangerous painkillers and artificial anti-inflammatories to address this condition. But did you know 20,000 arthritic die every year from perforated ulcers because they take aspirin? And did you know that aspirin accelerates arthritis? Treating a symptom just allows the underlying condition time to get worse over time. Treating the underlying condition eliminates the symptoms because healing has taken place. Arthritis has multiple causes: food allergies, fatty acid deficiencies, mineral deficiencies, autoimmune processes etc. Again painkillers do not address any of these underlying causes. The natural approach would include joint realignment to reduce inflammation and decreased wear and tear of the joint. Nutritional therapy to supply nutrients for cartilage and joint health as well as essential fatty acids to supply lubrication to the joints. There are many other things a natural healthcare provider might utilize in helping patients overcome their arthritis not just covering the symptoms and allowing the condition time to get worse.
Pain. Advisors for the FDA have recommended all painkillers to be removed from the market because of their danger. Just a few years ago three painkillers were permanently removed from the market because of the deaths they caused. Did you know 3500 women a year die from kidney failure taking ibuprofen for their headaches? We just discussed the 20,000 arthritic who die from taking aspirin. The facts are over 3000 people a week die from prescription drugs many of those from painkillers. And do painkillers address the root cause for pain? Of course not! When people notice pain relief in natural healthcare it is because healing has taken place. There are so many different aspects to pain that we can't discuss them all here but natural healthcare is the most effective approach to dealing with the root cause of pain than any other approach on this planet. And you're not going to die from the treatment.
Diabetes. I would be the first one to say that for type 1 diabetes taking insulin might be your only choice. Insulin does not cure your diabetes and if you're diabetic you'll suffer from the disease but insulin will keep you alive. When it comes to type II diabetes natural healthcare offers tremendous help. 70% of all type II diabetics can be drug-free with normal blood sugar levels with a combination of diet and targeted nutritional therapy. Natural healthcare is the only approach that can address insulin resistance. Plus it is safe as well as effective.
Allergies. The most common allopathic approach is antihistamines. Histamine is a normal immune process and essential in keeping you healthy. One study indicated chronic antihistamine use could make you susceptible to cancer. Why? Chronically suppressing the immune system is not a smart idea. Allergies respond beautifully to homeopathic antigens and nutritional therapy to build up the adrenals and immune system. Antihistamines do not fix anything they just suppress symptoms. Again symptom suppression allows the underlying weakness or condition time to get worse. Natural healthcare offer some of the most dramatic healing results when it comes to allergies.
Osteoporosis. Every osteoporosis drug has a long list of side effects. Ask this simple question, is osteoporosis a drug deficiency disease? Of course not! Of the five nutrients the FDA allows claims to be made for, hydroxyapatite for osteoporosis is one of those. Osteoporosis is a combination of nutritional deficiencies (and I'm not talking about calcium), hormone imbalances, and a lack of exercise. Which of these do the drugs fix? Of course none of these. To understand osteoporosis completely you should read our pamphlet "The truth about Osteoporosis".
Sleep disorders. Sleeping pills are a public healthcare disaster. Just ask the lady who the police were called on and was found naked at midnight power washing her house. The sleep medication had caused the bizarre sleepwalking event because of the way it alters brain chemistry. We know serotonin and melatonin are behind most sleep disorders and guess what you get serotonin and melatonin from, L-tryptophan. Most sleep disorders are just a sign of nutritional deficiencies. Sleeping pills do not appropriately address these issues. One of the things patients tell me when they received chiropractic care is that they sleep better. Do you think reducing the stress that misalignments cause the nervous system would help the body relax and sleep? Find out the cause, correct the cause.
Asthma is the last on the list of the top 10. Allopathic medicine use some of the most dangerous debilitating drugs on kids with asthma including steroids. Do these drugs cure asthma? I think you know the answer to that. Chiropractic and natural healthcare has a long history of fixing the underlying causes for asthma. Drugs don't heal! I remember the seven-year-old patient several years ago who was having alarming symptoms from the drugs his medical doctor had put him on and yet he was a prisoner in his own house. He would look out the window at his friends playing and cry because he couldn't go outside due to his allergies. Three weeks of chiropractic care he was off all of his medication and outside playing with his friends.
The bottom line is this. You have been manipulated primarily by pharmaceutical companies in most cases into making decisions about your health that are the wrong decisions. Pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars every year on manipulating how you think about your health.
They've even come up with phony conditions and then promote their dangerous drugs to treat them. And they use slick advertising to make you think that you need to take a drug in order to be happy or healthy.
Drugs are necessary in crisis care. Drugs are like the fire department coming in with their axes and hoses to tear down doors and walls to put the fire out. Allopathic medicine is very destructive to your body and your health.
Natural healthcare is like the carpenters and who come in and rebuild the home. If you keep the electrical system and the gas lines in good working order you might not have a fire. If you keep your body, your nervous system and energy systems in good working order you might not need emergency healthcare.
Chiropractic and natural healthcare can make a tremendous difference in your health and the health of your family. Seek solutions for your healthcare. Health is a natural expression of your body.
