SIX DAY CLEANSING DIET
This is your six-day special food program. For best results it must be followed exactly as written.
When an automobile is full of carbon, it has no pep. It is clogged up. You may put in the very best gas and oil, but the speed is not there. The sensible and logical thing to do is to take the car to a mechanic and have the carbon cleaned out. After that is done, what happens? The car seems like new. There is plenty of power.
Your body is comparable to the car. When the cells, of which you have many millions, are clogged up with ACID—SUGAR—MUCUS—PUS—etc-, you have no pep, your appetite is poor, you do not sleep well, your complexion is-bad, your eyes are dull, you suffer from aches and pains you are nervous and irritable, you feel indifferent—everything seems wrong. Life is not so much fun as it once was; in fact, you are really ill.
The sensible and logical thing to do is to CLEAN OUT, not just your bowels, but also the cells. Purge these cells—get all this accumulated toxic material out. But how?
Well, that’s easy. OBSERVE THIS SPECIAL FOOD PROGRAM. It does it every time! For six short days you will be on a FEAST—not a fast. You will be filling your body with Nature’s life-giving foods—fruits and vegetables that contain all those precious vitamins and minerals. When a sufficient amount of these live substances reaches the cells of your body, there will be a flushing and a cleansing such as you have never experienced before. You will eliminate toxic material that has been with you for years—toxic material that has robbed you of your vitality. When this gets all out, you will be like the car that has been cleaned of the carbon. You will have plenty of energy—your complexion will undergo a marvelous transformation—you will feel like a baby—aches and pains will disappear -your nerves will be at ease and you will feel so good that life will be a joy.
That is what this SPECIAL 6-DAY PROGRAM will do. Follow directions carefully. When you start this program—STICK TO IT! Don’t try it 1 day and then quit! After this program, you are to ALWAYS have some fresh raw fruit or vegetables with every meal!
BREAKFAST FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS
15 minutes before you are ready to eat breakfast, squeeze the JUICE of a lemon in a medium glass of hot water and drink it.
Orange or Grapefruit Juice …………………… 8 ounces. You can take more if you desire, but be sure that you take 8 ounces at least.
Cottage Cottage Cheese …………………………………….. 5 level tablespoonful. No more or no less.
Fresh Fruit………………………………………. One-half pound. You may eat more, but be sure to eat at least,
(No bananas or avocados) 1 pound. - You can eat only 1 kind of fruit, or you may mix.
Coffee or Tea …………………………………. No coffee may be used. Herb tea 1 cup if desired.
Between breakfast and lunch you should- drink all the FRUIT and VEGETABLE juice you can hold. Also, eat fresh raw vegetables and fruit. The more live food, you consume, the more thorough will be the cleansing. If you can’t get the fresh juices, us the canned variety. Make up a lot of VEGETABLE BROTH (see recipe on back). Drink lots of this broth, as it is full of minerals. V-8 juice or vegetable juice from health food store can be substituted.
LUNCH FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS –
Vegetable Broth ………………………….. Drink two cups during the meal.
Salad Make a chopped salad of fresh raw vegetables. Use a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and salt. Eat at least 8 LEVEL TABLESPOONSFUL, more if you desire. Use four of the vegetables listed below: Artichokes, Asparagus, Beans, Beets, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Celery, Dandelions, Endive, Egg Plant, Fresh Green Corn, Fresh Green Peas, Green Peppers, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Lotus, Okra, Onions, Parsley, Parsnips, Pumpkin, Radishes, Rutabagas, Salsify, Spinach, Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes,
Turnips. (You may use the leaves or tops also.)
Dessert Fresh fruit with a little pure honey.
Coffee or Tea …………………………. Not at this meal.
Between lunch and dinner, drink all the fruit and vegetable juice you desire. Eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables you want. Fill up! It's medicine for you. REMEMBER: The purge comes from the vitamins and minerals in the food, so be sure to eat plenty.
DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS
Vegetable Broth ……Drink TWO CUPS during the meal, more if you desire.
Cooked Vegetables ………….. Select two or three of the different kinds listed above and cook them with butter. Eat a generous helping of each. (No potatoes.)
Bread ………… One medium slice WHOLE WHEAT bread with butter.
Dessert ………. Baked apple with cream or a salad of fresh fruits. A little honey OK.
Coffee or Tea NOT at this meal. And ... if you still feel hungry after dinner, eat fresh fruits and drink, fruit or vegetable juice ... ALL YOU WANT!
RECIPE FOR VEGETABLE BROTH
Take 7 carrots and 1 small bunch of celery and cut fine. Place in 2 quarts hot water and boil for 15 minutes. Add 1/3 bunch of parsley and a large handful of fresh spinach, cut fine. Boil 10 minutes more. Drain off the juice or broth. Flavor with salt, onion, okra, tomatoes, green peppers or garlic. (You may save the vegetables and use for your cooked vegetables at dinner.)
The above recipe makes about 1 day's supply. You can make more if desired, and keep in the refrigerator. It can be used hot or cold. The purpose of this broth is to FLUSH. Drink lots of it during the six days. It is full of minerals from the vegetables. It is really a refreshing, soothing drink. Enjoy!
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROGRAM
The first day you may feel slight discomfort by having changed your regular mode of eating, but do not allow this to disturb you, for it is natural. About the 3rd or 4th day, the bowels and kidneys will begin to move freely. Much toxic material will be passed. There may be a few minor symptoms as the result of this cleansing. This is quite natural and is to be expected. - About the 5th day, you will feel a surge of energy. You will be surprised at yourself. Your complexion will have cleared up -- your eyes will begin to brighten -- you will feel wonderfully CLEAN inside. The little cells that were so full of toxins are now clean, and they will begin to cry out for other food. Continue on until the end of the 6th day; then combine your meals so they are balanced. -- Then keep up eating much fresh, raw vegetables and fruit, and you will be motivated by your better health!
As we get older we can start noticing our bodies more than when we were younger. A lot of times these symptoms are completely reversible. Dr. Price (a Harvard Professor) was one of the greatest pioneers in this field of tooth cures. His amazing discoveries based on ancient wisdom from indigenous cultures across the planet-Fiji to the Swiss Alps-showed how to restore dental health without surgery or chemicals. This he did by going to many different indigenous groups the world over who showed remarkable quality of teeth. There were (at least in the early 1900s) people every-where to be found with perfect or near-perfect teeth. Instead of 50 to 95 percent tooth decay like people in modern society, certain peoples exhibited 5 to 0 percent tooth decay! What were these people doing differently and could their habits or results be emulated? This is what Dr. Price set out to find out.
Time and time again, Dr. Price documented the tragic plight of indigenous people coming into contact with industrialization. For extended periods of time, many of these groups enjoyed a life without significant tooth decay. But with the arrival of industry and commerce, and with them-modern foods-their teeth began to degenerate. Weston Price was widely respected in his time, and frequently published in many dental journals, including several articles in the Journal of the American Dental Association.
Fluoride
Fluoride is the smallest negative particle and destroys enzyme molecules at very low concentrations. Fluoride actually destroy 83 of the enzymes in the body. The mechanism and process by which it destroys these enzymes has been proven by X-ray studies. Fluoride breaks up the hydrogen bonds that keep your mouth and teeth intact. It is extremely poisonous unleashing positive hydrogen bonds in enzymes and proteins. Fluoride also detaches the gum tissues forming 1-to-8 mm deep pockets. Fluoride is a nerve poison that causes cavities.
According to Dr. Judd, (a Ph.D., Chemist and professor of Chemistry for over 33 years, and a Researcher in the industry), "To avoid fluoride is to prevent more than 114 ailments ... These 114 medical side effects extend all the way from cancers down to headaches caused by 1 ppm fluoride in the water. Thirteen of these side effects are proven by a double blind study on 60 patients by 12 physicians, 1 pharmacist and 1 attorney."
Using nutrition, Dr. Weston A. Price reduced the rate of tooth decay 250 times in 17 individuals who had severe tooth decay. In this group, approximately half of all teeth had been affected by decay prior to Price's nutritional program. After the program, only two new cavities formed within a 3-year time period putting the rate of reoccurrence at 0.4 percent.'
SILICA
Calcium, of course, is important for your bone growth and formation but even more important is the mineral called silica (silicon dioxide). You don't have enough of this mineral in your diet and you can take a ton of calcium and brush your teeth five times a day and still lose your teeth, just like your hair in the shower, as you get older without it.
The formula called BioSiL is known to provide a sufficient nutritional support for your tooth repair/growth. It will improvc your teeth, bones, and connective tissue, and will also help calcium metabolize in your body (without it most of your calcium will go right through you, especially if you take it as a part of a common multivitamin formula). According to the makers of BioSiL (Si[OH]) it is 20,000 times more soluble than silica (Si02-found in horsetail and colloidal gels) and 2.5 times more bioavailable than other forms of silicon according to the makers of Biosil.
Besides nutrition here are some other recommendations: soak your tooth brush in hydrogen peroxide, you can also use hydrogen peroxide as a mouthwash. Hydrogen peroxide is a natural, safe antibiotic. Use salt and baking soda on your toothpaste. Find a fluoride free toothpaste to use, below are some options. Be sure to brush your gums. If you have a tooth infection besides using hydrogen peroxide, chewing on the clove of garlic (a natural antibiotic) can work quite well.
Teeth cleaning
Teeth cleaning options for optimum cleaning instead of regular tooth paste would be toothsoap (www. toothsoap.com). Otherwise you can always make your own with all or some of these ingredients:
1. Unprocessed raw coconut oil (also swishing this for a minute a day will help clean and pull out junk from the teeth)
2. Tea tree oil
3. Baking soda 1/10 part
4. Extra virgin olive Oil (2 part)
5. Spearmint or peppermint oil (1/10 part)
6. Unprocessed sea salt or Himalayan salt (1/50 part)
7. Eucalyptus oil (1/10 part)
8. Food-grade hydrogen peroxide (1/10 part)
BELIEVE IT OR NOT, THE FOODS you consume can affect your smile as much as brushing or flossing. Every time you eat sugary or starchy foods, the bacteria in plaque get another chance to form decay-causing acid. And bad breath can make you want to hide even the most pristine teeth.
But choosing the following foods that naturally fight bacteria, remove plaque, strengthen enamel, and freshen breath is a good way to preserve your pearly whites.
1. Celery
Celery protects your teeth in two ways, says Lana Rozenberg, D.D.S., a holistic dentist and founder of Rozenberg Dental Day Spa in New York City. The extra chewing it requires produces plenty of saliva, which neutralizes the bacteria Streptococcus mutans that causes cavities. Additionally, chomping on naturally abrasive foods massages gums and cleans between teeth. Try This: Snack on a handful of raw celery or carrots once a day.
2. Cheese
Studies from the last decade show that cheese, with its low carbohydrate and high calcium and phosphate content, provides several benefits for your teeth. It helps balance your mouth's pH (an acidic pH encourages the growth of cavity-causing bacteria). Cheese also preserves and rebuilds tooth enamel and produces saliva, which kills the bacteria that cause cavities and gum disease. Try This: Enjoy a 1-inch cube (about 1/2 ounce) of cheese after dinner instead of a sweet dessert.
3. Green Tea
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains substances called catechins that kill the bacteria in your mouth that turn sugar into plaque (a sticky mass of bacteria, sugars, proteins, and fats that produces cavity-causing acid when it comes in contact with sugary or starchy foods). Catechins also wipe out the bacteria that cause bad breath. Try This: Drink 2 to 5 cups of green tea (regular or decaffeinated) a day, says Mindy Green, director of research at the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colo. Consider making a thermos of green tea to drink at work. The night before, steep 3 to 4 green tea bags in 4 cups of boiling-hot water in a covered thermos for three to five minutes. Remove the bags. Serve the tea the next day over ice or after reheating it.
4. Kiwi Fruit
For their size, kiwis pack more vitamin C than any other fruit. In fact, one large kiwi supplies more than 100 percent of your recommended daily amount. If you don't get enough vitamin C, research shows that the collagen network in your gums can break down, making your gums tender and more susceptible to the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Try This: Instead of topping your morning oatmeal with brown sugar, use a sliced kiwi.
5. Onions
Onions contain powerful antibacterial sulfur compounds. In a 1997 test tube study, onions killed various types of bacteria, including S. mutans. Research indicates that they are most powerful when eaten freshly peeled and raw. Of course, raw onions can do a number on your breath, so be sure to have some fresh parsley on hand (see below). Try This: Add a few onion slices to salads and sandwiches each day.
6. Parsley
Chewing parsley or mint leaves after a pungent meal will help you maintain sweet-smelling breath. These herbs contain monoterpenes, volatile substances that travel quickly from your bloodstream to your lungs, where their odor is released via your breath. Try This: Top zesty dishes with a few tablespoons of minced fresh parsley or garnish dessert with a few sprigs of fresh mint.
7. Sesame Seeds
According to fossils, our Paleolithic ancestors had great teeth. Anthropologists suggest that this is partly due to the cleansing action of primitive foods like seeds, which slough off plaque and help build tooth enamel. Sesame seeds, for example, are also high in calcium, which helps preserve the bone around your teeth and gums. Try This: Sprinkle a tablespoon of sesame seeds on salads and steamed vegetables a few times a week for a gentle teeth cleaning and 87 mg of calcium.
8. Shiitake Mushrooms
A 2000 study in Caries Research showed that lentinan, a sugar found in shiitake mushrooms, prevents mouth bacteria from creating plaque. Try This: A few times a week, add four to five sliced shiitakes to soups or stir-fries. Buy fresh shiitakes or dried ones, which can be reconstituted by soaking them in hot water for about 25 minutes before use.
9. Wasabi
Otherwise known as Japanese horse-radish, this condiment not only provides zing to sushi, it also protects your teeth. A 2000 study in Biofactors revealed that the substances that make wasabi taste hot, called isothiocyanates, also inhibit the growth of cavity-causing bacteria. Try This: Eating wasabi a few times a week will protect you from cavities. For a smile-saving salad dressing, combine 3 tablespoons rice wine vinegar, 1 tablespoon honey, 1 teaspoon wasabi paste, 1 teaspoon soy sauce, and 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil.
10. Water
Drinking water keeps your gums hydrated and is the best way to stimulate saliva--your body's greatest defense against the bacteria that cause plaque and cavities. Rinsing your mouth with water also helps wash away trapped food particles that decompose in the mouth and cause bad breath. Try This: Aim to drink six 8-ounce glasses of purified water throughout each day to keep your gums (and whole body) hydrated and to stimulate saliva. If you can't brush your teeth after eating, be sure to rinse your mouth with water.
VEGA testing is a simple biofeedback procedure. Your nervous system is a highly sophisticated information retrieval and intelligent response output organ. Your nervous system is a bio computer more sophisticated any computer made by man. Part of the nervous system retrieves and analyzes information the other part responds to that information.
During the VEGA test your nervous system is exposed to several different substances that it either responds to or doesn't. Probably the easiest way to explain this is if someone has an allergy to ragweed. In an allergy test with VEGA testing we would expose the body to the vibratory rates of ragweed. Because the body recognizes this as an allergen we would monitor a response.
This is an objective response that is repeatable. We observe this response in the apparent change in arm or leg lengths. The response of tapping the knee and observing the reflex extension of the lower leg is the exact same reflex we observe. If you elicited the reflex at the knee with the leg straight you would observe a temporary shortening of that leg as the muscles contracted. This biofeedback reflex mechanism is the basis we use for monitoring in VEGA testing.
HISTORY
VEGA Testing is based on the phenomenon of “medicine testing” found by Dr. Reinhardt Voll, M.D., a German medical doctor, in his work with electrical acupuncture. Dr. Helmut Schimmel, M.D., also of Germany, later developed Dr. Voll’s work into a system of substance testing now known as VEGA testing.
VEGA testing is based on the effect of electrical resistance changes of the skin on certain acupuncture points (low electrical resistance areas) in response to differing substances that are either beneficial or detrimental to the body.
Dr. George Goodheart, D.C., U.S.A., discovered in the 1950’s that the muscles of the body, in the presence of certain substances, would either become weaker or stronger. This finding is part of a diagnostic system called "Applied Kinesiology". Based on this phenomena, a simple arm or leg check can monitor the body’s response to any given substance.
Because this particular procedure is more objective and can be performed repetitively without fatiguing the body, this is the system that we use.
VEGA TESTING’S SCOPE
VEGA testing is a multi-faceted diagnostic procedure. It can be used to determine if a patient has an allergic tendency, and, if they do have allergies, what particular antigens they are allergic to. VEGA testing allows us to find the major organs that are under the most stress. It also helps to determine the level of stress of each organ or part of the body. It can monitor the progress that a patient is making, without having to re-run expensive laboratory tests.
The VEGA test method allows for nutritional evaluation to determine if there are serious mineral or vitamin deficiencies, as well as food overloads, e.g., over-consumption of salts or sugars, proteins, etc. VEGA testing also gives some information about the emotional status of a patient. We can determine if the nervous system is being stressed by some strong deep emotions, and what possible remedies might be effective in helping the emotional processing.
The VEGA test method allows for determining what nutritional products or remedies might be effective in the treatment of certain conditions. VEGA test method also allows for the determination of what is called, “Causal Chain”, or the domino effect that is taking place in the body. Most of the time when one organ malfunctions, it affects another organ, which affects another, etc. To find the original, or most stressed organ, can be very important in understanding a patient’s particular health problems.
VEGA test method is a quick, easy method of developing an acupuncture diagnosis as to which meridians or electrical circuits within the body are malfunctioning.
When a patient is showing signs of an infection, VEGA testing allows for a quick evaluation to determine what is behind these acute symptoms - whether the source is a virus, bacteria, yeast overgrowth, food sensitivity, or an allergy response.
This method allows evaluation of the immune system, showing which organs in the immune system are under the most stress and need the most support.
We can determine also if a patient is suffering from geopathic stress. This condition is due to radiations that might be influencing our health because of underground streams or mineral deposits or gases from underground; these can affect our bodies in subtle ways.
Through VEGA testing we can also tell if dental fillings are having an adverse effect on the body due to mercury leaching into the system. It will indicate the presence of a toxic overload, and tell if that overload might be due simply to metabolic toxins, or if it is from heavy metals or insecticides that have entered through the environment’s food or water supply.
VEGA testing also can give us an idea of which areas of the body (which arteries, etc.) may be being affected by excessive cholesterol levels.
BIOLOGICAL SCORE (AGE)
In the Vega test system the concept of bio-score, based on evaluating the body’s response to 21 ampules for toxic load of the body, relates to the level of over-all stress or disease within the body. If we gave each organ that was malfunctioning a numerical value, then added them all up, that is the idea behind the bio-score.
By having a score like this when starting therapy we can evaluate our treatment program any time we would like. As the body heals itself the score will reflect this by going down. If the score becomes fixed then a change in the treatment program becomes necessary. The bio-score is based on the body's reaction to one or more diagnostic ampoules in a set of 21. The more ampoules that the body reacts to, the more problems that represents. If you react to two ampoules, say number 10 and 21, then your score would be 21x2. If you reacted to 3, 10, 16, 21 then your score would be 21x4. Knowing each number within your score is not important, just your top number and how many, tell the story. In those two examples, 21x2 would be better than 21x4. The following tells what to expect with different readings:

Kefir (pronounced /ke’fier/ ke-FEER) (or alternatively kefi-rs, keefir, kephir, kewra, talai, mudu kekiya, milk kefir, búlgaros) is a fermented milk drink.
The composition of kefir depends greatly on the type of milk that was fermented, including the concentration of vitamin B12. During the fermentation, changes in composition of nutrients and other ingredients have also been shown to occur. Research has shown, however, that lactose maldigestors are able to tolerate kefir, providing the number of live bacteria present in this beverage consumed is high enough. It is believed that the bacteria in the kefir or yoghurt matrix are protected by the buffering effect of the yoghurt. It has also been shown that fermented milk products have a slower transit time than milk, which may further improve lactose digestion.

Milk proteins in kefir are broken down into a more basic structure of amino acids. Acidic milk speeds up the secretion of digestive juices and encourages the metabolism to work more efficiently, reducing the effects of indigestion and improving digestion of other foods when taken at the same time. Fermentation gives a release of CO2 into the milk which is good for digestion. You may notice a slight effervesence when you open a bottle - that's the CO2 and is completely normal.
Digestibility of lactose in kefir
Lactose in the kefir milk is transformed during fermentation into smaller molecules: glucose and galactose. Although there may still be some lactose present in the milk, it is reduced.
Cancer prevention and tumor reduction
Results of laboratory tests on mice have shown that traditional kefir helped to prevent cancer of the colon, and reduce tumour growth where cancer is already present in the colon. Similar results were obtained regarding tests for tumour reduction in breast and liver cancers, as well as prevention of prostrate cancer. Although there have not been any clinical trials in the UK or USA, we hope that this will eventually happen to prove the true extent of the healing power of traditional kefir, that it may benefit others.
Cholesterol reduction
The cholesterol in milk fats is relatively low. Kefir contains 12mg of cholesterol per 100 ml (in a drink with 3.5% fat content). The microorganisms in kefir break down the fats in the milk, making them easier to digest. Recent research suggests that certain probiotic lacto bacteria present in kefir may actually help to lower cholesterol; by attaching themselves to cholesterol cells and eliminating them from the body.

The study is designed to investigate bactericidal actions of electrolyzed oxidizing water on hospital infections. Ten (10) of the most common opportunistic pathogens are used for this study. Cultures are inoculated in 4.5 mL of electrolyzed oxidizing (EO) water or 4.5 mL of sterile deionized water (control), and incubated for 0, 0.5, and 5 min at room temperature. At the exposure time of 30 seconds the EO water completely inactivates all of the bacterial strains, with the exception of vegetative cells and spores of bacilli which need 5 min to be killed.
Composition of Anolyte

Abstract OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:
Saline irrigation would be more effective for chronic sinusitis patients if it had bactericidal effects. Low concentrations of hypochlorous acid (active ingredant in anolyte water) may be used as a nasal irrigation solution.
First, we developed a 0.85% NaCl solution by adding NaCl to tap water (pH 7.0 and 8.4) and measuring the concentration of free chlorine and hypochlorous acid after giving the solution a short electrical impulse of 20 seconds. Then we investigated whether the derived hypochlorous acid had a toxic effect on human primary nasal epithelial cells, if and what effect it had on the expression of mucin genes, and, finally, if it had bactericidal, fungicidal, or virucidal effects.
STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biochemical experiment.
METHODS:
We treated human primary nasal epithelial cells with 3.5 ppm of hypochlorous acid and then examined the cells for cytotoxicity. We also investigated the bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal effects by challenging the cells with the following microorganisms Aspergillus fumigatus, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Rhizopus oryzae, Candida albicans, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes. To study the virucidal effects of HOCl, we used the human influenza A virus to challenge the cells.
RESULTS:
In the cytotoxicity assay and in the morphological examination, the cells did not show anytoxicity at 30 minute or 2 hours after treatment with HOCl. More than 99% of bactericidal or fungicidal activity was noted for all species, except for Candida albicans, in tap water at either pH 7.0 or 8.4. In addition, a 3.2-log10 reduction was achieved in cells challenged with the human influenza A virus.
CONCLUSIONS: A low concentration HOCl solution can be used as an effective nasal irrigation solution.

Many of us have been jaded by the constant onslaught of "the latest" medical news, much of which seems to contradict what we just heard or read about the week before.
But on July 9, millions of us - patients and health care providers alike - paid rapt attention when the federal government's National Institutes of Health released findings from a major clinical trial, warning of the risks associated with a widely used type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that combines two female hormones, estrogen and progestin.
It's estimated that 6 million postmenopausal American women currently take Prempro or similar combined estrogen-progestin drugs to ease menopause symptoms and to improve their health and well-being.
Risks Outweigh Benefit,
The study, called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), found that the combined drugs caused increases in breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots. Although the risk to an individual woman may be small, the number of cases occurring in the population at large can be great, researchers said. And those risks outweigh the drugs' actual benefits - a small decrease in hip fractures and a decrease in cases of colorectal cancer. The study was released four years earlier than expected because of researchers' concerns.
The WHI study is the first-ever long-term randomized controlled clinical trial - considered the gold standard by medical researchers - of hormone replacement therapy. The WHI was established in 1991 by the government to address the most common causes of death, disability and impaired quality of life in postmenopausal women. The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of 40 WHI clinical sites nationwide where study participants are seen and monitored.
The Women's Health Initiative is a 15-year multimillion-dollar endeavor, and one of the largest US prevention studies of its kind. The study was designed to look at the effects not only of HRT, but also diet modification and vitamin and mineral supplements. Some 67,000 women from across the country, ranging in age from 50 to 79, are participating in the WHI clinical trials. In addition to those women, the study is also following the medical history and health habits of an additional 100,000 women to examine the relationship between lifestyle, health and risk factors with specific disease outcomes. Final results are due out in 2006.
More than 16,600 U.S. women are participating in the combined estrogen-progestin portion of the trial, among them 438 women who are in the Medical College of Wisconsin group. They were sent letters telling them to discontinue taking those drugs. The WHI is continuing to study the effects of ERT, or estrogen-alone drugs, used by women who have had a hysterectomy. WHI has not stopped that portion of the study.
Is there a safe alternative?

95% of your serotonin is made in the intestines. Both anxiety and depression as well as sleep disorders can be related to low serotonin levels. Serotonin is just one of many neurotransmitters that are important in a person's overall sense of well-being.
Nerves have a language similar to speech. The alphabet of this language is the neurotransmitter. The location and amount of neurotransmitters secreted are the language spoken to the brain. Our nerves learn the language by repetitive stimulation.
Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters send signals throughout the nervous system. We used to think these chemicals, such as dopamine and serotonin, resided in the brain at the end of nerve cells. We now know that they can be found in many other organs--the heart, the gut, the immune system--and that they can diffuse out into the tissues and the blood. This is why so much of what happens to us shows up in many different parts of the body; why depression, associated with low serotonin levels in the brain, also causes decreased immune function and decreased bowel function, and why anti-depressants can have gastrointestinal side effects.

The expression "gut-level feeling" isn't just a "saying." We really do have feelings in our gut.
Our two brains communicate back and forth via a major nerve trunk extending down from the base of your brain all the way down into your abdomen. Because of this, your two brains directly influence each other.
When one brain becomes upset, the other joins right in.
That's why your stomach might get "fluttery" because of anxiety before an important meeting. Or why a late night spicy snack that's hard on your stomach might also give you some nasty nightmares.
In "The Second Brain," Dr. Michael Gershon, a professor at New York City's Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, refers to the entire gastrointestinal system as "the body's second nervous system."
"The brain is not the only place in the body that's full of neurotransmitters," Dr. Gershon explains. "One hundred million neurotransmitters line the length of the gut -- approximately the same number found in the brain."
Actually, the total of nerve cells in your gut is greater than the total nerves connecting the rest your body to your brain. This complex circuitry allows your "gut brain" to act totally independent of the brain in your skull.
It is no surprise that there is a direct relationship between emotional stress and physical distress. "Clinicians are finally acknowledging that a lot of dysfunction in GI disorders involves changes in the central nervous system," said Gary Mawe, a professor of anatomy and neurobiology at the University of Vermont.
The big question is which comes first, physiology or psychology?
The enteric (GUT) and central nervous systems use the same hardware, as it were, to run two very different programs. Serotonin, for instance, is crucial to feelings of well-being.
But 95 percent of the body's serotonin is housed in the gut, where it acts as a neurotransmitter and a signaling mechanism. The digestive process begins when a specialized cell, an enterochromaffin, squirts serotonin into the wall of the gut, which has at least seven types of serotonin receptors. The receptors, in turn, communicate with nerve cells to start digestive enzymes flowing or to start things moving through the intestines.
Either way, what is good for one brain is often good for the other, too. A team of researchers from Penn State University recently discovered a possible new direction in treating intestinal disorders, biofeedback for the brain in the gut.
To put this simply: problems in your digestive system can be a source of not only emotional issues but even disorders like autism. Even disorders that are considered IMMUNE system disorders like rheumatoid arthritis could be caused by digestive system disorders.

The Colon
The colon absorbs water, electrolytes, and nutrients from food and transports them into the bloodstream. It is about 6 feet in length and consists of the cecum (connects to the small intestine at the cecal valve), the ascending colon (the vertical segment located on the right side of the abdomen), the transverse colon (extends across the abdomen), the descending colon (leads vertically down the left side of the abdomen), and the sigmoid colon (extends to the rectum). The pH in the colon varies between 5.5 and 7 (slightly acidic to neutral). 95% of your serotonin is made in the intestines. The list of problems that can develop in the colon is long from irritable bowel syndrome, diverticulosis, polyps, even colon cancer to name a few.
Intrinsically (from within) genetics and poor blood and nerve supply would be the most common problems. Extrinsically (from without) could be poor diet, food allergies, parasites, poor digestion etc. Neurologically your low back supplies the nerves that regulate and control the growth, repair and function of the colon. These nerves also control the blood and lymph supply of the colon. Not only can colon problems cause low back pain but misalignments in the low back can set you up for colon problems.
When we see someone with colon problems, besides the structural and neurological component we look at diet and the digestive system as a whole. Problems with a lack of digestive enzymes or an imbalance of digestive enzymes can cause undigested foods to flood the colon leading to putrified waste products, shifts in pH balance and disruption of the normal bacteria population further compromising colon health.

Improving the health of the lining of the colon is essential in any colon treatment. Eat plenty of foods high in fiber. If you're having colon problems drink your cleansing dose of fluids. Your cleansing dose is half your body weight in ounces. For instance, a 100 pound person should drink 50 ounces of fluids to reach their cleansing dose. Eat in a relaxed environment where you chew your foods into a liquid form before swallowing. Never put off bowl movements when you have an urge to go, this can lead to constipation. Cultured or fermented foods supply the friendly bacteria essential in colon health. Junk food is poison for you colon. Take care of your body and your body will take care of you.
When Mary started care she had been sick for a longtime. She suffered from constant daily headaches, neck and back pain, breathing difficulties, indigestion\acid reflux with most meals, she craved sugar most of time, had chronic constipation, had reoccurring bladder infections. PMS was a nightmare for both her and the family and some days she was so depressed and in so much pain that she just stayed in bed. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being high energy she felt like a 2 or 3.
Mary's evaluation indicated several areas that needed help. Her nervous system was under a tremendous amount of stress due to Subluxations she had carried for years. The challenge with cases like this is to get a commitment from them to not only change their lifestyle but to stay with a treatment program until the problem is completely resolved. Some patients mistakenly become their own doctor when they start to feel better and decide they can discontinue care. This is a mistake for anybody that leaves treatment unfinished, but for Mary it would be a disaster. Luckily she was at the end of her rope and was determined to do what it took to get well. Our testing indicated three areas that we needed to work on. One was detoxification, both to eliminate the environmental toxins that she had been accumulating for several years since her body stopped functioning normally as well as for all the internal toxins from metabolism and drug therapy that she was not properly eliminating.
The next area was lifestyle and diet including targeted nutritional supplements to help repair and rebuild the damage that had been caused by years of neglect and inappropriate use of pharmaceutical drugs. And last was the realignment of her spine to help reduce the serious stress on her nervous system that was not allowing for proper regulation and control of internal systems. This nerve pressure was one of the biggest reasons her body was not able to return itself to proper health. As this nerve pressure advanced after her accident 15 to 20 years ago her body's systems slowly but surely lost their capacity to maintain not only proper function but the proper elimination of toxins that had now accumulated in several major organs, including the brain, leading to her symptoms.
As we began the treatment program Mary, unfortunately, got worse. As soon as we started relieving the nerve pressure her body wanted to dump all these toxins she had accumulated over the past twenty years. Also, because her medical doctor had recommended such a high level of calcium intake, she had developed a magnesium deficiency. This caused joint pains, a heel spur and inhibited her muscles from relaxing to allow the changes that needed to take place from her adjustments. After removing the excess calcium from her diet and getting her on a good magnesium product, that was matched properly to her metabolism, she started improving. The muscles that were working against us and becoming sore after her adjustments started to relax and allow the correction she so desperately needed. I recommended magnesium salt baths to help the muscles respond quicker. Then we began a detoxification program that not only helped her eliminate toxins but also had the nutrients to neutralize the toxins so she didn't become too uncomfortable during the detoxification process.
After the first two weeks of treatment she noticed that she went a whole day without a headache. She even started to notice more energy and a better sense of well-being. Mary was on her way out. Soon she was going two to three days a week without headaches, her neck and back pain was 50 percent better. She could even make it a whole day without Pepsi. Mary was leaming the importance of eating whole foods and foods that were compatible with her metabolism type. At the end of three months time Mary is amazed how much her health has improved. She gets out and plays with the kids at night. Something she could never do just three months ago. Even after a long week of work she's ready to go out on date night with her husband, something they were doing once every two or three months before. Mary is sleeping the night like a baby again, not waking up with heartburn two to three times as in the past. Mary didn't get here by accident. And she would've never maintained her progress if she decided to stop care after she was feeling better. She committed to stay until the problem was fixed. And not only did she get her life back but her family had a wife and mother back as well.

I felt that, rather than boring you with a lot of facts and figures about CFS, I would let a very special patient tell you her story.
In July of 1985, I was diagnosed as having Chronic Mononucleosis. I was sent home with directions of bed rest, and really thought nothing serious of it. Weeks passed and I was still very ill. I had to quit my job. Months passed, and I was still very ill. I was getting worse, not better.
Medical expenses started piling up in the desperate search to find "my cure," "my health again," that which had been taken for granted for so many years. I was sent from one doctor to the next until I landed in the hands of an infectious disease specialist only to have him again do more poking and prodding.
In the end, I was sent home with a pamphlet entitled, "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - How to Live with Your Disease". All I could see before my eves was a picture painted with illness. . I drove home with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome branded in my mind, soul, and body.
CFS is an illness that is not totally understood. Its cause is unknown and it consists of many different symptoms ranging from severe and debilitating fatigue. muscular aches and pains, neurological problems, flu-like symptoms to a host of different other problems. I found nothing to stop the horrible sickness. Nothing could be done to control the waxing and waning of the illness. The months passed into years.
I truly began to believe I would have to learn to live with this illness, until I was led to Dr. John Keefe and his practice. After a few weeks of working with Dr. Keefe. I began to start picking up. The sick, flu-like feelings started to subside. Little by little, my energy started coming back. I stopped "living my illness" for the first time in along time. I knew I was pulling out of it!

The "digestive system" or "digestive tract" is contained in a long tube called the alimentary canal that runs from our mouth to our anus. The mouth, the esophagus, the stomach, and the intestines are all components of the digestive system - and though each has a special function, they all have the same purpose: to convert food into energy and eliminate what's not needed. Let's investigate some of the digestive problems that people suffer from when certain parts of the digestive system malfunction and what the chiropractic position is regarding these conditions.
After we chew our food, mixing with digestive enzymes, we swallow it - that is, unless we have a swallowing problem, or dysphagia one of the most common problems of the digestive tract. (People with dysphagia feel the food "going down slowly" or "sticking')
Next, the food travels to the stomach down the tube called the esophagus (Latin for "I swallow"). Most people think of the stomach as a simple pouch or container where food is stored and dissolved before being absorbed by the intestines. Well, it's that and much more than that. In fact, the stomach is one of the busiest and most interesting organs in the body. Inside the stomach are billions of gland cells that manufacture, by a process that is still not fully understood, one of the most powerful acids found in nature: hydrochloric acid (HCL). HCL dissolves the stomach contents so they can be absorbed by the intestines. This acid is so powerful that if it were ever to escape from the stomach, it could eat away our heart, lungs. Liver, veins, arteries, and every other organ in our body.
Hydrochloric acid stays safely in the stomach because the stomach's inner walls are covered by a thick layer of mucous, which is made by hundreds of millions of mucous-secreting cells These cells live only two to four days - in fact, they are shed at the rate of half a million cells per day.
At the top end of the stomach is the cardiac orifice, a muscular area that is usually closed to prevent food from backing up into the esophagus. But when people have "heartburn' the food may reflux (flow back) a little through the cardiac orifice from the stomach to the esophagus. This condibon is usually felt as a burning sensation behind the sternum or breastbone. (During vomiting this orifice opens up). At the bottom of the stomach is a valve (the pyloric sphincter) that lets food into our intestines a little at a time.
Many things can go wrong with the stomach. The problem perhaps most commonly seen in both children and adults is chronic stomachache, also called nervous stomach or dyspepsia. Another common condition is stomach or duodenal ulcer, which occurs when the mucous lining becomes thin and the powerful acids and digestive juices start to eat through the stomach and intestines - causing a very painful condition.
The stomach can also suffer valve problems, such as pylonc stenosis - a tightening or shrinking of the opening between the esophagus and the stomach: gastritis - an inflammation of the stomach walls: and both benign and malignant tumors.
Digestive troubles are often poorly understood and many medical treatments are therefore directed only at treating the symptoms. As one medical text has stated: Further, treating symptoms alone, apart from the risk of the side effects and adverse reactions that are common with drug usage, can lead a person into the false belief that the problem is gone merely because the symptoms are gone. It's not unusual to hear of a person "living on" antacids, Di-Gel, Tums, Rolaids, or some other over-the-counter remedy, as well as prescription drugs, without any sign of improvement. As a general rule, then, when there's any kind of health problem, it is always best to avoid medical drug therapy and surgery, which are often dangerous forms of treatment, and investigate first and foremost more natural forms of health care.
It may confuse a patient who has experienced relief from a digestive problem after chiropractic care to hear that chiropractic does not attempt to treat or cure digestive conditions. The chiropractors purpose is to analyze a person's spinal column for a very common yet very dangerous condition: vertebral subluxation, or spinal nerve stress. Vertebral subluxations damage nerves and interfere with the proper communication between the brain and the body.
In order for the body to be healthy, the brain must be able to communicate to all the body organs including, of course, the digestive organs. Any interference of the nerves' ability to communicate to any part of the body can cause a state of "dis-ease", an old term meaning that the body is functioning at less than top efficiency This can be a very destructive state, leading to lowered resistance and thus to disease. If vertebral subluxations are found, the chiropractor, by performing the procedure known as "spinal adjustments," will then proceed to correct or relieve them. And, although chiropractic is not a treatment for disorders of the stomach or digestive organs, relieving pressure on the nerves that go to the digestive system has been recognized as essential for good health
As early as 1921 research revealed that slight spinal abnormalities could cause stomach and digestive disorders, including disorders of the esophagus, duodenum, and intestines. Henry Winsor, M.D., working on cadavers at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Discovered that diseases of the digestive organs were present when vertebral subluxations affecting nerves traveling to digestive organs were present. Lewit showed in 1985 that 87 percent of a group of adolescents suffering from duodenal and/or gastric ulcer had "pelvic distortion, with increased incidence of blockage in the craniocervical junction. In 1984, Grieve discussed the effectiveness of spinal care with dysphagia and "abdominal nausea.""' Maigne has written that relief of interference with the nervous system has alleviated digestive pains and "pseudo-ulcers,'' among other conditions. Robuck's clinical research led him to state that spinal adjustments could help individuals suffering from "dyspepsia and epigasitric distress." In another study of 100 patients with stomach and duodenal ulcers it was found that 86 had spinal abnormalities of the area that supplied the stomach with nerve fibers.'' The noted researcher N. T. Ussher, M.D., found that spinal misalignment could produce disease by irritating the nerves that supply various organs and that correction of the spinal problem could give relief to stomach ulcers, gastritis, colitis, and spastic constipation."
The digestive system can weaken, begin to work improperly, and fall prey to a multitude of diseases. The job of the chiropractor is to ensure that the stomach and the rest of the digestive system (as well as all the other organs of the body) are receiving an unobstructed nerve supply. This promotes body harmony, enhanced ability to cope with stress, and improved resistance to disease. Remember, if the nerves are impinged upon by vertebral subluxations, no amount of Di-Gel, Rolaids, Pepto-Bismol, Tums, or antacids will relieve the pressure. A chiropractic spinal adjustment is what the body needs.
FMS (fibromyalgia syndrome) is a widespread musculoskeletal pain and fatigue disorder for which the cause is still unknown. Fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles, ligaments, and tendons - the soft fibrous tissues in the body.
Most patients with FMS say that they ache all over. Their muscles may feel like they have been pulled or overworked. Sometimes the muscles twitch and at other times they burn. More women than men are afflicted with FMS, and it shows up in people of all ages.
To help your family and friends relate to your condition, have them think back to the last time they had a bad flu. Every muscle in their body shouted out in pain. In addition, they felt devoid of energy as though someone had unplugged their power supply. While the severity of symptoms fluctuate from person to person, FMS may resemble a post-viral state. This similarity is the reason experts in the field of FMS and chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) believe that these two syndromes may be one and the same. Gulf War syndrome also overlaps with FMS/CFS.
Pain - The pain of FMS has no boundaries. People describe the pain as deep muscular aching, throbbing, shooting, and stabbing. Quite often, the pain and stiffness are worse in the morning and you may hurt more in muscle groups that are used repetitively.
Fatigue - This symptom can be mild in some patients and yet incapacitating in others. The fatigue has been described as "brain fatigue" in which patients feel totally drained of energy.
Sleep disorder - Most FMS patients have an associated sleep disorder called the alpha-EEG anomaly. Patients appeared to spend the night with one foot in sleep and the other one out of it.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome - Constipation, diarrhea, frequent abdominal pain, abdominal gas, and nausea represent symptoms frequently found in roughly 40 to 70% of FMS patients.
Chronic headaches - Recurrent migraine or tension-type headaches are seen in about 50% of FMS patients and can pose a major problem in coping for this patient group.
Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Syndrome - This syndrome, sometimes referred to as TMJ or TMD, causes tremendous jaw-related face and head pain in one quarter of FMS patients. Typically, the problems are related to the muscles and ligaments surrounding the jaw joint and not necessarily the joint itself.
Other common symptoms - Premenstrual syndrome and painful periods, chest pain, morning stiffness, cognitive or memory impairment, numbness and tingling sensations, muscle twitching, irritable bladder, the feeling of swollen extremities, skin sensitivities, dry eyes and mouth, dizziness, and impaired coordination can occur. Patients are often sensitive to odors, loud noises, bright lights, and sometimes even the medications that they are prescribed.
Aggravating factors - Changes in weather, cold or drafty environments, infections, allergies, hormonal fluctuations (premenstrual and menopausal states), stress, depression, anxiety and over-exertion may all contribute to symptom flare-ups.
The cause of FMS remains elusive, but there are many triggering events thought to precipitate its onset. A few examples would be an infection (viral or bacterial), an automobile accident or the development of another disorder, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or hypothyroidism. These triggering events probably don't cause FMS, but rather, they may awaken an underlying physiological abnormality that is already present.
Long term follow-up studies on FMS have shown that it is chronic, but the symptoms may wax and wane. The impact that FMS has on daily living activities, including the ability to work a full-time job, differs among patients. Overall, studies show that FMS may be equally as disabling as rheumatoid arthritis.
Currently there are no laboratory tests available for diagnosing Fibromyalgia. Doctors must rely on patient histories, self-reported symptoms, a physical examination and an accurate manual tender point examination. Proper implementation of the exam determines the presence of multiple tender points at characteristic locations.
Hope for fibromyalgia.
Over the past several years I have had the opportunity to help several patients with fibromyalgia. It has been my experience that there is not one cause for this condition so individualizing a patient's treatment program is essential. The immune system appears to be the most common weakness with the patients that I have worked with. Through the use of diagnostic testing like Vega testing we have been able to unravel the underlying cause and develop a treatment program on an individual basis. Not all patients respond as quickly to therapy because not all patients have the same underlying cause. From detoxification to specialized nutrients to rebalance the immune system as well as treating individual nutritional deficiencies, patients have responded extremely well to care. Though not all patients show a complete recovery, many do. Our program consists of developing an individual diet that matches a patients genetic makeup, targeting therapy to balance the immune system through chiropractic adjustments and specialized nutritional formulas. Kidney stones, one of the most painful of the urologic disorders, are not a product of modern life. Scientists have found evidence of kidney stones in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy. Unfortunately, kidney stones are one of the most common disorders of the urinary tract. In 2000, patients made 2.7 million visits to health care providers and more than 600,000 patients went to emergency rooms for kidney stone problems. Men tend to be affected more frequently than women.
Bryan N. Becker, MD, head of nephrology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, says the "profound degree of pain" can radiate down the side and belly and can be accompanied by nausea and vomiting. "It cycles," he tells WebMD. "It lets up, starts again."
A kidney stone is a hard mass developed from crystals that separate from the urine and build up on the inner surfaces of the kidney. Normally, urine contains chemicals that prevent or inhibit the crystals from forming, such as citrate and magnesium. Crystals also may form if your urine becomes too concentrated or is too acidic or too alkaline.. These inhibitors do not seem to work for everyone, however, so some people form stones. If the crystals remain tiny enough, they will travel through the urinary tract and pass out of the body in the urine without being noticed.
Kidney stones may contain various combinations of chemicals. The most common type of stone contains calcium in combination with either oxalate or phosphate. These chemicals are part of a person's normal diet and make up important parts of the body, such as bones and muscles.
A less common type of stone is caused by infection in the urinary tract. This type of stone is called a struvite or infection stone. A bit less common is the uric acid stone. Cystine stones are rare.
Dehydration through reduced fluid intake or strenuous exercise without adequate fluid replacement increases the risk of kidney stones. Obstruction to the flow of urine can also lead to stone formation.
Often the pain of a kidney stone will land a person in the nearest ER, where narcotic painkillers may be required, Becker says.
The key is fluids. The patient will get IV fluids in an effort to flush the stone out. Small ones will pass on their own, although it is not comfortable.
If the stone is retrieved, Brown says, the lab can tell what it's made of and some dietary instructions for preventing a second episode can be issued.
If the stone is too big to pass and is blocking urine (a situation which can cause damage to the kidney), it may be broken up by sound waves. Or the doctor can insert a device into the urinary tract and grab the stone in a little unfolding basket and remove it. Surgery may also be necessary for some stones.
Natural Home Remedies For Kidney Stones
Bran flakes. Fiber helps get rid of calcium and oxalate in your urine, which cuts the risk of kidney stones. A bowl of bran flakes can give you 8 mg of fiber. Nettle leaf. Drinking plenty of water is the undisputed champion of kidney stone prevention. Some herbal teas, such as those made from the leaves of stinging nettles, may enhance the benefits of water by acting as natural diuretics. Vitamin A is an essential ingredient for healthy kidneys. One carrot can give you twice your daily requirements for this kidney-friendly nutrient. Foods rich in vitamin A include sweet potatoes, pumpkin, winter squash, broccoli, and carrots. The B vitamins, specifically vitamin B6, are well-known stone fighters. Vitamin B6 keeps the body from building up excess oxalate. Too much oxalate is a major factor in kidney stone formation. Three ounces of chicken provide more than one-third of your daily needs of B-6. Magnesium, too, seems to be helpful in preventing stones. Your doctor may suggest a daily supplement of B6 and/or magnesium.
As someone who has experienced a kidney stone years ago, I know how painful it can be. Luckily, I was aware of the mechanism of their development and was able to resolve mine in short order. The two most important factors that I have found with kidney stones is pH and magnesium.

For acid urine (the most common) two lemons or three limes in a quart of water is your drink of choice, or a gold label Alka-Seltzer which is just a bicarbonate will change your pH quickly. For alkaline urine cranberry juice and high doses of vitamin C as well as eating acid producing foods will be helpful. I recommend taking your pH to the opposite extreme for 24 hours. In most cases as soon as your pH is shifted the stone will dissolve enough to pass without much pain. Then try to maintain a 6.4 pH for saliva and urine. Watch out for too much calcium and not enough magnesium. Magnesium is the key. Magnesium citrate would be very helpful. Divide your body weight in half and consider that ounces. For instance 100 pound person should drink 50 ounces a day of fluids if they have kidney stones. Again if your urine is acid make that lemon water you drink at half your body weight.
Avoid the following high oxalate foods. Or, limit the amount you eat or drink to a total of 1/2 cup or less per day from this list. This can increase your risk of getting kidney stones

Steps You Can Take To Have Healthy Bowel Movements
Eat substantial meals; don't nibble on small amounts throughout the day.
Each time you eat a substantial meal, you stimulate stretch receptors in your stomach that are responsible for triggering normal and mass peristaltic waves throughout your small and large intestines. These natural contractile waves promote regular movement of waste material through your colon and rectum.
Also, eating substantial meals allows significant boluses (roundish masses) of waste materials to travel together through your colon, turn into well formed stools, and get eliminated from your body in an efficient manner.
Don't suppress the desire to go.
If you regularly suppress the urge to have a bowel movement, waste materials spend more time than is optimal in your colon, causing excessive dehydration of these materials and formation of hard stools.

Many books have been written concerning diet. What is a good diet? Is there a perfect diet? Is there a diet everyone should follow?
When I was in school an instructor challenged us; "You can make any statement about diet, even an outrageous one, and I will find an authority who agrees with you and one who disagrees." He defined an authority as anyone who has written a book. Believe me, after over 25 years in practice I know, for the layperson, diet can be very confusing. It can be confusing for a lot of doctors as well. The one law concerning diet that few will disagree with is "all things in moderation."
WE ARE DIFFERENT
Over the years, as the effects that food has on individuals has been studied, we have noticed that certain foods will have a unique effect on a persons moods and physiology. Mothers have seen that sweets might make one of their children hyperactive and another child moody or depressed. Foods do not have a universal affect on individuals, the facts are different foods affect people in different ways. So if individuals have different metabolisms than they have different dietary needs. If we were all exactly the same then one perfect diet might be the answer.
The fact is we are individuals, different types of music affect different people in a unique way. For some people like one type of music, some another. To think one diet will fit all makes as much sense as thinking one type of music will be enjoyed by all. At Keefe Clinic we attempt to understand how each patient is unique. There is absolutely no way one diet can be right for all people. Yet for the last several years a low-fat, high complex carbohydrate diet has been pushed on the general public.
In April 1996 the Second International Symposium on Dietary Fats and Oil Consumption in health and disease was hosted by the Southwestern University Medical School in Dallas, Texas. Nutritional researchers from around the world presented their findings on the effects of fat in the human diet. After the presentations showing the subjects following the low-fat, high complex carbohydrate diet hadn't got rid of their obesity, had not lowered their cholesterol levels, had lowered their HDL levels (the good cholesterol), and had increased their blood levels of triglycerides (a major risk factor for heart disease), the moderators of the symposium pronounced the low-fat diet a failure.
Now some people who have followed the low-fat diet have benefited. Those individuals have lost weight, lowered their cholesterol and blood sugar, and have extended their lifespan. But when you get a massive study of the population as a whole, the good is far outweigh by the number of individuals that have been hurt. Some metabolisms need a low-fat diet; some metabolisms need a high protein diet. Some metabolisms need to stay away from red meat. Some metabolisms should have red meat on a regular basis. Some people like classical music, some people like rock-and-roll. Just as our auditory needs are different our chemical needs are different.
In 1910 we consumed 83% of our fat as animal fat and only 17% as vegetable fat, and practically all of that came from eating the actual vegetables. Now, we get three times the amount of vegetable fat we did then, and a little more than half the animal fat. And we have added a new kind of fat; unnatural, processed fat called Trans fat, to the mix. Trans fat, widely used for baking, turned up in all kinds of processed foods; unfortunately, according to the Second National Health in Nutrition Examination Survey done nearly 20 years ago, the largest contributions of calories in the U.S. diet are white bread, rolls, crackers, doughnuts, cookies, and cakes, so we consume-at least those of us who follow the typical American diet-a hefty dose of these unnatural fats. In order to avoid Trans fats, it's important to look for the words partially hydrogenated and avoid any products that contain them.
There are some universal truths: eat real foods. It's possible today to have a meal that consists of very little real foods. Try to eat something fresh and raw everyday, fiber is an essential element to good health and raw foods are full fiber, as well as, vitamins, minerals and enzymes. Junk food got its name because it's primarily junk. Garbage in-garbage out, a computer law that's true for our bodies as well.
New research links dehydration with a number of common diseases. Are you dying of thirst? Forty percent of your body weight in ozs. is the minimum of water you should drink everyday, 50 percent is your cleansing dose. If your weight is 100lbs. you need to drink 40-50ozs. of water every day. Your body is 75 percent water; your brain is 85 percent water, you need to replace this with clean water everyday. As we get older our sense of thirst gradually decreases which can lead to our bodies becoming chronically and increasingly dehydrated.
How about fresh air and sunlight. Our bodies need these elements as well. Indoor air has concentrated pollutants that can effect our health. Get outside and enjoy God's creation. Today we hear a lot about the dangers of sunlight. We are told that the ozone layer is opening and we are being exposed to more harmful rays of the sun. To that I say, "junk science". The sun has not changed, we have. We do not eat enough foods that have the antioxidants that protect us from the sun. We are exposed to more toxins that deplete us of antioxidants and so we have more skin cancer. Eat your vegetables and enjoy the sunlight, remember all things in moderation.
There are four distinct body types with many subgroups. The different body types have differing chemistry related to which organ is the most dominant. The types include Thyroid, Adrenal, Gonadal (sex glands), and Pituitary. In men the Adrenal and Gonadal are combined in the Adrenal type.
The ratio of proteins, carbohydrates and fats differ for each type. The Thyroid type and Pituitary type require a lot of proteins whereas the Adrenal type and Gonadal type require a lot of complex carbohydrates. Too much fat can cause problems for Adrenal type and Gonadal type. The Thyroid type and Pituitary type can handle fats pretty well but carbohydrates would put their metabolisms under a lot of stress.
Learning what ratio of proteins, carbohydrates and fats that work best in your system will go a long way in balancing your body's chemistry. Each body type has certain foods that pose particular health risks for them. Understanding this information and realizing how your body type is genetically wired can give you a handle on your health for the rest of your life.
