IN THE NEWS: DRINKING SODA AGES YOUR IMMUNE CELLS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A DAILY SMOKING HABIT Research published in the American Journal of Public Health claims that drinking soda on a daily basis ages your immune cells to a degree similar to that of a daily smoking habit. To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the effect of sugary sodas on human telomeres. At the very tip of each arm of the chromosome is where you'll find the telomere. Your telomeres shorten with time because they cannot replicate completely each time the cell divides. Hence, as you get older, your telomeres get shorter and shorter.They found that people who drank more sugary soda tended to have shorter telomeres. Drinking an 8-ounce daily serving of soda corresponded to 1.9 years of additional aging, and drinking a daily 20-ounce serving was linked to 4.6 more years of aging.

When we’re talking about breast cancer we want to look at basic issues that can adversely affect the breast. Fluid needs are based on body weight, one half of your body weight in ounces is considered a cleansing dose of fluids 80% of that is considered the minimum dose. For a 100 pound person that would be 50 ounces as cleansing and 40 as minimum. Estrogen balance is crucial because a high estrogen to progesterone ratio can promote breast cancer and other breast disease. A high-fiber diet can help control estrogen by improving the elimination of estrogen after it has been conjugated by the liver and dumped out through the bile into the colon. If you're constipated and thus have a longer than normal route time for things to move to the colon then the bacteria in the colon will release the estrogen back into the system causing an excess estrogen affect. Flax powder and soy products have a modulating effect on estrogen. Soy has gotten a bad name due to these substances within soy that have an estrogen or hormonal effect on a cell. But this effect is said to be 40 to 50% less potent than estrogen produced by the body. So it has a buffering effect on the cells and thus a protective effect. Again these substances are found in both soy and flax powder.

When we talk about cancer it's important to understand that cancer develops in a Pro inflammatory chemistry. One way to reduce inflammation is to eat a diet based on your body type. In most of the recommendations in this publication when it comes to food recommendations it should be modified based on your body type. We have a list of anti-inflammatory foods that you can request. Talking about inflammation, body pH is important. And to understand body pH then evaluating urine pH will give insight on if your system is too acidic (Pro inflammatory) are two alkaline (Pro degeneration) and by requesting a food pH list you can modify your body's pH. Because Pro inflammatory and an acid pH go together, then drinking alkaline water can be helpful. Putting lemon or lime in your water, even though the juices acid to the tongue, once it goes through the digestive process it has a strong alkaline effect on the body. Two lemons or three small limes per quart of water is a good pH balancing drink if your system is too acidic. Urine pH should be 6.4.

A plant-based diet. A recent study suggests that women who eat lots of fruit, veggies and legumes, and little red meat, salt and processed carbohydrates may lower their odds of developing estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which accounts for about a quarter of all breast cancers. And a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that the likelihood of the cancer was 20 percent less when women followed such a diet.

Red, yellow and orange fruits and veggies. In December, researchers at Harvard Medical School said that women with higher levels of carotenoids, or nutrients found in fruits and veggies, have a lower risk of breast cancer, especially cancers that are more difficult to treat and have a poorer prognosis. Smart choices include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, red peppers and winter squash. The study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

  1.  Consuming walnuts slowed the development and growth of breast cancer tumors in mice, according to a study published in 2011 in Nutrition and Cancer. Study author Elaine Hardman, a professor at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, looked at the effect of a diet containing the human equivalent of 2 ounces of walnuts a day (25 to 30 walnut halves). After 34 days, mice that ate walnuts had less than half the rate of breast cancer as a control group on the same diet minus the walnuts. The number and size of tumors also were significantly smaller for the walnut group. The study authors speculate that walnuts' anti-inflammatory properties are the reason.
  2. Cutting back on alcohol. Even a moderate amount of alcohol is "clearly linked" to an increased risk of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Compared with non-drinkers, women who have two to five drinks a day are at least 50 percent likelier to develop the disease. If you have to drink, stick to a glass of wine (5 ounces), a shot of liquor (1.5 ounces) or a bottle of beer (12 ounces) a day.

Cabbage and sauerkraut. Researchers at Michigan State University found that people who ate raw or lightly cooked cabbage and sauerkraut at least three times a week were 72 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who had it twice or less. High levels of glucosinolates – compounds found in cabbage – may be responsible.

Phytochemicals are nutrients found in plants. Some phytochemicals have been studied for their cancer-fighting benefits and their ability to prevent cancer from coming back.

  • Soy. Soybeans contain phytoestrogens. These are nutrients similar to the estrogen in your body. Soybeans (also called edamame), tofu, soy milk, and miso soup contain phytoestrogens. Some researchers think they can help protect against the kind of breast cancer that depends on estrogen for its growth, but others don't. Ask your doctor whether eating one to three servings of soy foods a day would help you. It's possible it may interfere with hormone therapy or some other treatment.
  • Antioxidants. Many vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other foods contain antioxidants. Foods with antioxidants include broccoli, liver, and mangoes. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage. Dietitians say you should eat a balanced diet with a variety of fresh foods to get antioxidants. That's better than taking megadoses insupplements.
  • Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene gives carrots, apricots, yams, and other vegetables and fruits their orange color. Some studies that suggest that a diet high in beta-carotene-rich foods may lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.
  • Lycopene. Lycopene is what puts the red in tomatoes and the pink in pink grapefruit. It might also help prevent recurrence of breast cancer.

12 foods to fight cancer:

One of the easiest things for a person touched by cancer to address is their diet. Here are 12 foods that can each play a role in fighting one or more steps in the multi-step cancer process.

Remember that ´good nourishment´ is a crucial weapon in the fight against cancer and any illness. Good cancer nutrition can be vital in increasing your personal odds of survival.

Remember too that natural compounds are likely to do you a lot more good than synthetic pills! So here are a few additions to your cancer diet, as a part of your own Integrated Cancer Treatment Programme.

1: Oily Fish
Fish oil will provide long chain omega-3, a powerful anti-inflammatory in the body that minimizes COX-2 and its abilities to drive localized negative hormones called eicosanoids which inflame and irritate. Omega-3 has been shown to re-lengthen telomeres, which shorten when you have cancer putting the DNA structure at risk, and reducing longevity. Oily fish also contain vitamin A, an important vitamin in the fight against cancer (herring, mackerel and salmon are top of the list). Fish oils have been linked to reduced levels of prostate, breast and colon cancer. Research shows they help prevent cachexia when having chemotherapy. You´ll also get a little vitamin D from them, another proven cancer-fighter.

2: Carrots
Along with apricots, peppers and pumpkins, they provide cancer carotenoids like beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, when required by the body. 1 cup of carrot juice, 2 sweet potatoes, 16 dried apricots and 4 cups of red cherries will each provide 25mgs. Don´t eat them all at once - people have been known to turn a little orange! A great juice to make yourself involves carrots and apples (for quercitin) and beetroot (for anthocyanins). A real cancer fighting drink! Carotenoids are also found in natural food sources such as chlorella.

3: Red and Yellow Peppers
The top source of vitamin C in the UK - even better than oranges. Vitamin C strengthens your immune cells and neutralises toxins. Linus Pauling thought cancer patients should consume 2 to 10 gms per day. A large red pepper is 250 mgs. 200 gms raw broccoli 175 mgs. 150 gms papaya 90 mgs. An orange 65 mgs. Berries and cherries are great sources. Red and yellow peppers are also good sources of carotenoids.

4: Sunflower Seeds
High in zinc and vitamin E. Zinc helps vitamin C do its work and accelerates healing time. It is important to a healthy prostate. You need 15 to 25 mgs per day. Five tablespoons of sunflower seeds give you 10 mgs. Best are oysters, 3 are enough. Milk can block zinc absorption. Sunflower seeds will also provide a little selenium.

Pumpkin Seeds
Can be mixed with the sunflower seeds in your morning muesli. 5 tablespoons will each provide 20 mgs of vitamin E, the ultimate cancer buster, which inhibits cancer cell growth and protects immune cells from free radicals. Vitamin E boosts your immune system´s fighting abilities. The target is 300-600 mgs and is difficult to achieve without supplements. Green vegetables, soya and almonds are also good sources.

5: Brazil Nuts
Six cracked nuts will give you your daily selenium; 100 to 200 mcgs is the goal. Selenium is a very potent anti-cancer agent. Eight slices of wholemeal bread, an organic egg, or a large chicken breast will also be enough.

Tuna, onions, broccoli and tomatoes contain selenium too.

6: Mushrooms 
There´s an enormous body of research evidence now that shows how ´medicinal´ mushrooms (Shiitake, Maiitake, cordyceps etc) boost the immune system and fight cancer.  Even the button mushroom has cancer fighting ingredients. We have a great review on medicinal mushrooms

7: Tomatoes
Seven to ten helpings per week, especially cooked.

According to Harvard research 7-10 helpings a week cuts prostate symptoms by 40% and has an influence on many cancers e.g.: lung; colon; cervix; breast. Lycopene is the prime active ingredient, and 25 - 40 mgs the desired daily dose.

It is also found in strawberries, peppers, carrots and peaches, but one tin of tomato soup has 65 mgs alone. Lycopene helps reduce ´bad´ fat levels in the blood stream and is a strong antioxidant.

 

8: Egg Yolk
Along with green leafy vegetables, avocado, beans, carrots, apricots and pumpkins, egg yolk will give you folic acid.

This will help your DNA to replicate properly and protect it during radiotherapy.

400 micrograms is a recommended amount. Folate, biotin, niacin and vitamin B6 are all B vitamins that help in the cancer fight. Egg yolk, greens and whole grains are the best sources.

9: Broccoli
And other green cruciferous vegetables e.g. cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, contain fibre which helps eliminate toxins

Moreover, the fibre is rich in galactose, which binds to damaging agents in the intestine.

Cruciferous vegetables also contain indoles, and especially indole3carbinol which, along with its metabolite DIM, modifies and diminishes aggressive oestrogen action, can modify cellular oestrogen receptor sites, and aids in fighting oestrogen-driven cancers like some breast, prostate, brain and colorectal cancers.

I3C and DIM were also found to have action in non-oestrogen driven cancers as they can also affect thep27 cancer pathway.

Finally, sulphorophane in broccoli and especially sprouting broccoli seeds helps the liver detoxify, and reduces stomach cancer tumours.

10: Garlic 
It is a truly wonderful food. It seems to act to stop the spread of cancer in a number of ways, for example by stopping blood supply forming for tumours.

Garlic has a number of active ingredients. It contains selenium, tryptophan and sulpher based active agents that attack cancer cells.

Two or three raw cloves of garlic per day will ward off more than vampires.

11: Beetroot

And cherries, aubergines, red grapes - indeed any purple coloured fruits and vegeatables. They contain anthocyanins (and sometimes also resveratrol). Anthocyanins have been shown to kill cancer cells; resveratrrol has research supporting its role in fighting certain cancers like blood and brain cancers too.

12: Pulses
Lentils, chickpeas, beans and even soya etc. are a great source of fibre and protein without the animal fat.

Pulses also contain isoflavones, phytoestrogens. People get confused about plant oestrogen. The cells of your body have oestrogen receptor sites. When one form of human oestrogen (oestradiol) binds to them, the result is havoc inside your cells. About 40 times less potent is human oestrogen oestrone and about 40 to 50 times less potent still are plant oestrogens. Now which would you rather have sitting on your receptors? Pulses also provide fibres like lignans that can help neutralise free-radicals in the gut and blood stream.

Eat pulses every two days.

IN THE NEWS: US heroin deaths double in link to prescription painkillers, says CDC The over-prescribing of painkillers is fuelling nearly 17,000 annual deaths from overdoses in the United States as well as a rise in heroin use, according to a study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Thursday. The study found that the death rate from heroin overdoses doubled during that two-year span to from 1 to 2.1 deaths per 100,000 people, while deaths from prescription opioid drugs overdoses declined from 6 to 5.6 deaths per 100,000. "The rapid rise in heroin overdose deaths follows nearly two decades of increasing drug overdose deaths in the United States, primarily driven by (prescription painkiller) drug overdoses," the study found.

Many Americans, at different seasons of the year, are plagued by symptoms of runny noses, watery eyes, congested glands, persistent coughs, and recurring upper respiratory infections, all due to allergic reactions.   Allergies can be simply defined as the body’s inappropriate response to certain substances, usually proteins (antigens).  These proteins can be ragweed, grass pollens, any plant substance found in the air, a particular food or a chemical that is ingested or inhaled.  These antigens can cause immune system responses, classically the congested, runny noses, watery eyes, congested sinuses and lungs; but allergic responses can also include depression, asthma, joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, and many other symptoms.

We call these responses inappropriate because everyone will breathe in the ragweed or grass pollen, or eat certain foods, but only a certain percentage of the population will have reactions to these as antigens.  These reactions thus represent an inappropriate response to common substances.  In other words, the body interprets these common substances as invading organisms, and the immune system mounts a response as if it was being attacked.  However, the particular antigens usually do not cause any tissue damage under normal circumstances.  In fact, the damages (or symptoms that are produced within the body) are usually due to the body’s inappropriate immune system response to the substance.

It is this inappropriate response that needs to be treated - and not just the symptoms of the allergies.  The standard medical approach to allergies is to suppress the symptoms with dangerous antihistamines, cortisone preparations, and other medications that are designed only to repress the body’s responses.  This method is one that I term a “COVER-UP” method.  It does not help a patient with his or her allergies; it only artificially  covers up the symptoms of these allergies.  The question that needs to be asked is, “Why do these people have inappropriate allergy responses?"

The answer to this is:  the nervous system has an imbalance in the way it responds to certain proteins or other substances, and it is that response that must be corrected, not suppressed.
Below listed is the protocol which we have developed through trial and error over the years and with which we are currently  enjoying great success  at Keefe Clinic.

First of all, we understand that it is not the ragweed or any other antigen that is the problem, but it is the body’s response to it that is the problem.  Therefore, we look to the nervous system as the root cause, because the imbalance is within the nervous system, which then causes the abnormal reaction.

1) The first area of treatment is that of homeopathy.  Homeopathy is a system based on the principle of “like cures like”.  In the case of the allergies, the substance that would be used would be the antigen (the pollen, ragweed, food, etc) that produces the improper symptoms.  This antigen is diluted several times to form a product that will help the body adjust its inappropriate reaction to become an appropriate reaction.  By giving this antigen in a diluted fashion, and by diluting it enough that it will not produce an allergy reaction by itself, a slight response is produced that will gradually desensitize the body to the offending substance.

For instance, if you have an allergy to ragweed pollen, when you breathe it in, your immune system begins to fight the ragweed as if it was an invading bacteria or virus.  Thus, we would take ragweed pollen and dilute it down to a level where it will not cause that same immune response - indeed, at this level, it has been found that it will produce an opposite response.  In other words, it will re-calibrate the body in such a way that it will not react to this pollen as a foreign invader.  Over a period of time, by ingesting diluted antigens, the body will build up a resistance to this inappropriate response (allergic reaction). This strengthening of the body can lead to a permanent cure for this allergy.  The homeopathic treatment program is similar to the allergy injection program practiced in the United States.

Allergy mixes are liquids given by mouth in small doses on a regular basis - easily administered even to very small children.  These custom-made mixes represent the antigens (environmental, in foods, and chemicals) to which you might be sensitive.  These particular products sometimes require changing in potency in order to effect a permanent cure.  Most people start out using a 6x potency, and most will develop a permanent cure with that potency alone.  But some patients require the changing of potencies as they progress through the treatment program.  The potency can go from a 6x dilution all the way up to a 500x dilution, or higher,  before some are desensitized totally to a particular antigen.  Thus it is essential that a patient keep us informed on how he or she is responding to the treatment program in order for the allergy mix to be adjusted as needed.

2) The next approach in allergy work that we use is re-establishing a normal function of the nervous system in regard to these antigens.  For this we utilize Chiropractic care.  Chiropractic, of course, helps relieve nerve pressure and establishes normal nerve functioning within the body. Vertebra can lose their normal position and crowd the nerve root causing disruption of the normal control over the body.  Many disease processes have their start from subluxation complexes that were neglected because there was no pain and the person did not have his or her spine checked for problems.  Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective for many of the most common health problems that we suffer.

3) It has also been found that particular antigens will disrupt certain electrical-type circuits within the body. In acupuncture, these circuits are called meridians.  Several points which show less resistance to electrical current are found along the meridians, and these points can be mapped out by use of electronic machines that register skin resistance in the body.  It has been found that there are twelve meridians that are found on both sides of the body, as well as two meridians that are found along the center of the body, both in the front and in the back.  These meridians are associated with certain functions, organs, muscles and parts of the body.  Each meridian has a particular name, e.g., the kidney meridian (associated with certain parts of the body, including the kidneys).  There is a liver meridian, a heart meridian, etc.  These meridians are electrical circuits that tend to be associated with these key organs and muscles.  It is found that certain antigens will disrupt these electrical circuits in the body and produce the allergy response.  Through the acupuncture-allergy technique, we determine which circuits are disrupted by a particular antigen, and then by a proper stimulation of the key points within the meridian, as a particular antigen is being held or placed on the body, we cause the nervous system to re-adjust how it responds to that antigen.  In a few cases, this can produce almost instantaneous reversal of the allergy response in the body.

This is a new technique, and promises to be a very effective way of re-programming the nervous system in its inappropriate response to antigens.  This treatment program can vary as to number of treatments required to produce a permanent cure, but a number of patients will respond within 1-6 treatments when we are dealing with a particular antigen.  Depending on the number of antigens with which we have to deal, we can schedule allergy acupuncture treatment sessions for each substance, as we determine the number of sessions we will have to do to develop a long-term cure for your allergies.

4) Nutritional therapy is another important part of an over-all program. Weak organs are involved in allowing the body to have an allergic reaction.  Giving nutritional support to these weak organs will help a patient recover his health, and allow him to end the cycle of the chronic allergy sufferer who normally has episode after episode of allergy symptoms.  Through the use of properly selected products, the allergic system can be returned to normal function.  Remember:   allergies do not represent a normally functioning body.  Proper nutrition can be an effective tool in returning the body back to health in most health care problems.

It is a scary thing to see your first born child sick, tied down to the bed, crying and scared.  Being in a hospital you assume they would know what to do.  That evening the doctor came by to explain that they didn’t know what to do and  left us alone with a desperately sick child.

It was just a few months earlier that my mother hurt her back by falling on the ice and landing on the edge of the steps of our front porch.  After visiting the family medical doctor and being told there were no breaks or fractures, she was sent home with a bottle of pain pills.  They only made her sick and really didn't help with the pain.  A  friend hearing of the accident recommended chiropractic.  That was the best recommendation he could give.

This was some 30 years before research proved chiropractic was the best treatment for back pain; a person in pain really doesn't care a lot about research, they just want to get well.  After chiropractic care, her back problem was completely resolved, and even after 25 plus years there has been no reoccurring pain even with weather changes as the medical doctor had promised.  He had explained to my parents how his mother had had a similar accident, and every time the weather changes she's taking pain pills.  If you don't fix an injury, over the years arthritis will set in and you'll have continual problems.  When you correct the problem, it tends not to bother you anymore.  If you just treat the symptoms of a problem time will allow the problem, to progress.

With my mother's success with chiropractic and back pain, anybody I knew who had neck or back pain, I would be quick to tell them about chiropractic.  It wasn't long after that while I was going to Oral Roberts University on a partial trumpet scholarship that I woke up one morning with a facial paralysis.  What connection is there with your facial muscles and your spine?  I knew chiropractic was good for back pain but I didn't think about it when it came to a facial paralysis.

My medical doctor said I had Bell's palsy, and explained how he had Bell's palsy when he was in his early 20s.  Now, in his late '50s the corner of his eye and corner of his mouth still drooped slightly.  His treatment for me was to wait six weeks and see if it went away.  I went to see the chiropractor.  To my surprise not only did he feel he might be able to help but he found a sore spot in my neck that I never knew I had.  In fact, I used to “pop”  my own neck probably 10 or 15 times a day, not that it hurt but I just felt tension build up.

What I didn't know is that tension is the result  of a cervical subluxation  (vertebra out of place irritating the nerves). That had caused not only my chronic sinus problems but eventually my Bell's palsy.  Within a week of adjustments, my paralysis was gone.  Great, if I knew anybody with Bell's palsy or back pain I would tell them about chiropractic.  What I still did not know is that a chiropractic physician treats the whole body through the nervous system by spinal adjustments, diet, acupuncture and other natural methods.  That lack of understanding almost cost me my oldest son's life.

As I began this story, my six-month old son was in the hospital fighting for his life.  As babies do from time to time, Brian developed diarrhea.  Only in his case after two different medications failed and he became dehydrated with a temperature, I had to rush him to the hospital.  I watched for four hours as they tried to put a needle in one of his blood vessels.  After four hours they asked me to leave, and they worked another two or three hours trying to find a large enough vessel to feed him by IV.  When I was allowed  back in the room Brian was tied to a hospital bed, his arms tied down, his legs tied down and a needle in his leg because they couldn't find a vein.  They told me I couldn't feed him anything but ice chips.  The ice chips went straight through him.  After the doctor told me there was nothing more they could do I watched my son getting worse.  After a day and a half I realized if I wanted to save my son’s life, I would have to do something completely different.  I called my chiropractor and explained the problem.  To my surprise he felt he might be able to help.  In order to get proper care I had to withdraw my son from a hospital.

Then the miracle began.  Telling me what to feed him and having spinal adjustments,  I saw my son start to recover.  In a matter of days, he started to return to his normal self.  Chiropractic had done it again, and had released in my son that inborn ability to heal himself.  All this time my son could have been getting better.  In fact, when I was receiving treatments for my Bell's palsy, Brian's subluxations that caused the diarrhea could have been found and corrected weeks before.  Mothers listen, the birthing process can be stressful to a baby’s delicate spine.  A simple chiropractic adjustment could prevent a number of childhood diseases.  Even infantile colic responds best to chiropractic care.  Many mothers rave about chiropractic's ability to stop reoccurring ear infections.

What? “Okay”, you may say, “I get the blood clotting example but I have always been told that cancer runs in my family. Neuroimmunology is the scientific field that studies the relationship of the immune system and the nervous system.  We have discussed some of the functions of the immune system (in killing cancer cells as well as foreign invaders) and endocrine system (in clotting blood) but it is the nervous system that brings your innate healing all together.

CHIROPRACTIC:  Studies confirm chiropractic treatment prevents heart attacks and lowers blood pressure The popularity of chiropractic care has grown dramatically since the middle of the 20th century. Although most people seek chiropractic treatment to relieve musculoskeletal pain, certain types of pain may be indicative of the patient experiencing a heart attack just before or during treatment. Studies at Palmer Chiropractic College investigated the effects of chiropractic treatment on the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems in reference to an analysis of heart rate variability. Findings indicated that chiropractic adjustments do reduce pain and lower participant's mean heart rate. Additionally, evidence indicates that adjustments of the atlas, or first cervical vertebra, may stop some heart attacks while they are occurring, according to chiropractor, Dr. Christopher Clarke of the Vibrance Family Chiropractic Center in Nashville. Chiropractic treatment also has a significant effect on blood pressure and anxiety levels, according to a study reported in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics. The study examined systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels and patients' anxiety levels before and after an adjustment. In all cases, those subjects who received active treatment experienced a distinct drop in blood pressure and a decrease of their anxiety levels. If I ask most people on the street what was the main contributor to heart disease then cholesterol would be the first thing out of most people's mouth. If I ask you the number one way of maintaining healthy bones most people would say consuming more calcium. My question to you is: did you arrive at these conclusions by your own in-depth study of the research and science or have you opened up a medical textbook to determine how these conditions develop and exactly what these conditions are?  Let me give you some facts: one of the largest studies, I'm talking real-life studies not theoretical studies, was a Harvard study of 78,000 nurses. The facts are the nurses that consume the most calcium had the most bone fractures. Asian women living in their own culture eating their own cultural diet get one third the calcium that American women get and osteoporosis is extremely rare in their society. When they move to the US and incorporate the US diet they become the top risk group for osteoporosis.

The next fact is the cholesterol theory of heart disease first gained its acceptance in the 1950s. Medical nutritionist Dr. Keyes supposedly correlated the level of fat intake with heart disease in six countries and even though his theory was rejected at the time he used political maneuvering by becoming part of the Heart Association and finally got his theory accepted. When you look at his original research you will  see a study of 23 countries trying to make this correlation and he had to eliminate 16 of these countries in order to make his theory look correct statistically. When you add back the 16 countries he conveniently eliminated the correlation just doesn't stand up. And between the 1950s and about 1976 there are six different major studies trying to correlate fat in the diet with heart disease and they have all failed. In fact every major study from 1969 through the present has failed to support the cholesterol theory.

One of the longest continual studies is ongoing today started in 1948 in Framingham Massachusetts. This study involves 5000 residents and has shown some amazing contradictions to the cholesterol theory of heart disease. In fact this study has shown after the age 47 the patients with the highest cholesterol outlive the patients with lower cholesterol levels. This study also shows those who ate more saturated fat weighed less and had more energy than those on the low-fat diet.

In April 1996 the second International symposium on dietary fats and oils consumption in health and disease was hosted by the Southwest University medical school in Dallas Texas. Researchers from around the world presented their findings on the effects of fat in the human diet. After the presentations showing the subjects following the low-fat diet hadn't got rid of their obesity, and not lowered their cholesterol levels, had lowered their HDL levels (the good cholesterol), and had increase their blood levels of triglycerides (a major risk factor for heart disease), the moderators of the symposium pronounce the low-fat diet a failure.

There are several factors that lead to inflammation in the body which include: junk food (highly refined carbohydrates), hydrogenated oils that include trans fats, elevation in bad prostaglandins and hormones like insulin which are produced by the overabundance of refined vegetable oils and refined carbohydrates and sugar, and the reduced amount of helpful antioxidants and pH balancing foods and beverages that reduce the excess acidity of the body.

The body typing system that I use consists of four different body types: thyroid, gonadal, adrenal and pituitary. These four types tend to correspond the four personality types: Sanguine (This type is characterized by spontaneity, optimism, enthusiasm, high energy, mental flexibility, novelty seeking, impulsiveness and curiosity)., Phlegmatic (These people are mainly defined by their social skills, such as their ability to express themselves and read other people face expressions and body language. They do well at connecting facts and seeing “the big picture”. They are nurturing, sympathetic, agreeable and emotionally expressive). Choleric (This type is associated with testosterone, which is also present in men and women, but more so in men. These people are direct, focused, tough, analytical, logical and strategic. They have a great deal of courage and like to compete, often against each other. They often have square jaws, high cheekbones and high foreheads and love to use words like “intellect”, “ambition” and “challenge”) and Melancholic (tend to be calm, loyal and orderly, just as their personality name sounds. They are cautious and conventional. These men and women inherited genes in the serotonin system and their favorite words are “family”, “loyal”, “respect”, “caring”, “values” and “moral”). Most people are unique blend of four different types of personality, where all of the traits are present to some extent.

These four body types can be divided into two groups. We can call one group the protein group (about 70% of US) and the other the complex carbohydrate group (30%) the protein group tends to be sensitive to carbohydrates particularly refined sugars and grains. The carbohydrate group tends to be sensitive to fats (eggs, butter and red meat), salt and spices.  So a diet too high in sugars and grain can lead to inflammation in the protein type. A diet high in fats and oils can lead to inflammation in the carbohydrate type.

In the area diet this includes eating your body type diet but also consuming enough water for your body weight. In order to determine how much water you need to drink you divide your weight in half and consider that answer in ounces. For instance a hundred pound person their cleansing dose of fluids would be 50 ounces 80% of that would give you the minimum fluids they should drink which is 40 ounces. Dehydration can cause a whole host of conditions and cause any condition your suffering with to be a little worse. Since the EPA recommends boiling city water before drinking we encourage our patients to drink filtered water. Also when it comes to water you can get water in different pH ranges. If you're dealing with an inflammatory chemistry your body is going to be acidic. And so alkaline water can be very effective in the overall management of your body chemistry.

And so most patients need to undergo some level of detoxification in order to remove important stressors in their ability to maintain normal function and better health. In the UK, 1 million people are addicted to over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription painkillers and tranquilizers; that’s significantly more than the number addicted to illegal drugs.1

In the US, it’s a similar story. There were four times more deaths among women from prescription painkiller overdose than for cocaine and heroin deaths combined in 2010.2

Many people find themselves addicted to painkillers before they even realize what’s happened, often after taking the drugs to recover from surgery or treat chronic back, or other, pain.

Three Factors That Might Increase Your Risk of Becoming Addicted to Painkillers

Painkillers work by interacting with receptors in your brain resulting in a decrease in the perception of pain. They are inherently addictive, as they also create a temporary feeling of euphoria, followed by dysphoria, that can easily lead to physical dependence and addiction. However, why certain people become addicted while others get by unfazed has remained a mystery.

Researchers from the University of Derby set out to determine what might be influencing painkiller addiction and dependence by conducting an anonymous survey of people who had pain and had used painkillers in the last month. They found three predictors that they said identified those most at risk of developing painkiller dependence. It included those who:3

  • Used prescription painkillers more frequently
  • Have a prior history of substance abuse (often unrelated to pain relief)
  • Are less accepting of pain or less able to cope with pain

According to the authors, pain, prior substance abuse and psychological factors may all play a role in a person’s likelihood of addiction. They concluded:

“Based on these findings, a preliminary model is presented with three types of influence on the development of painkiller dependence: 1) pain leading to painkiller use, 2) risk factors for substance-related problems irrespective of pain, and 3) psychological factors related to pain.”

Painkiller Addiction Knows No Bounds

For instance, a significant number of older adults, particularly those in the baby boomer generation, are struggling with both illicit and prescription drug abuse.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that the number of people in their 50s who are abusing illicit or prescription drugs more than doubled from 2002 to 2010, going from 2.7 to 5.8 percent in this population. Among those 65 and older, 414,000 used such drugs in 2010.4

Among seniors, the health risks of all medications are increased, because the body takes longer to break down and get rid of the drug than it does in a younger person. As a result, the drug stays in an older person's system longer, where it can cause even greater damage.

At the other end of the spectrum, one in four teens has misused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime, according to survey results from the partnership at Drugfree.org and the MetLife Foundation.5 Prescription drugs don’t hold the same stigma as illegal recreational drugs, even though they can be just as deadly, leading teens to regard the former as a “safe” way to get high.

Prescription drugs have even been described by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as the “drug of choice” second only to marijuana for today’s teens.6

Sadly, some teens pay for this one “bad” decision with their lives. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and these drug-induced fatalities are not being driven by illegal street drugs. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the most commonly abused prescription drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax, and Soma now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.7

And while men are still more likely to die from prescription painkiller overdose, women are quickly catching up. More than 6,600 women, or 18 women every day, died from a prescription painkiller overdose in 2010. The problem, once primarily seen in inner cities, is now spanning to rural areas, hitting people of all ethnic backgrounds and income levels, from business professionals to single mothers to retirees.

Painkiller Addiction Can Easily Lead to Death

Painkillers (opioids) like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are one of the most commonly abused drug classes. These drugs are not only addictive, they can lead to slowed breathing and death if too much is taken, and the risks are compounded if you add alcohol to the equation.

Many are not aware that pain-killing drugs like fentanyl are actually 100 times more potent than natural opioids like morphine, making the addictive potential and side effects associated with prescription drug use much higher. And it doesn’t always take extremely excessive use, or even very long-term use, to have a fatal overdose.

For many, once you start taking these drugs it sets off a cascade of reactions in your body that make it extremely difficult to stop. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and CNN's chief medical correspondent, reported:8

“…after just a few months of taking the pills, something starts to change in the body. The effectiveness wears off, and patients typically report getting only about 30% pain relief, compared with when they started. Even more concerning, a subgroup of these patients develop a condition known as hyperalgesia, an increased sensitivity to pain.

As you might guess, all of this creates a situation where the person starts to take more and more pills. And even though they are no longer providing much pain relief, they can still diminish the body's drive to breathe. If you are awake you may not notice it, but if you fall asleep with too many of these pills in your system, you never wake up. Add alcohol, and the problem is exponentially worse. People who take pain or sleeping pills and drink a couple glasses of wine are playing Russian roulette.”

  • Alabama has instituted three new laws that give more medical personnel access to the state’s prescription monitoring program database, as well as tighten regulations on pain management clinics and making “doctor shopping” to get multiple prescriptions punishable by jail time
  • Indiana instituted new oversight powers to the state attorney general on pain management clinics and is considering mandatory annual drug screening of people prescribed opioids
  • Kentucky now requires pain clinics to be licensed and mandates that physicians check electronic prescription records before writing opioid prescriptions
  • Washington state has set dosage limits for physicians who prescribe pain medications, and prescriptions over a certain amount must be approved by a pain specialist
  • New York has a requirement that physicians and pharmacists check the state’s drug-monitoring program database before prescribing opioids

Managing Your Pain the Drug-Free Way

The solution, then, is to avoid taking the drugs in the first place, an option many physicians neglect to offer to their pain patients. If you are suffering from pain, I suggest you work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner to determine what's really triggering your pain, and then address the underlying cause. If you have chronic pain, try these first, before even thinking about prescription painkillers of any kind.

  1. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is a drug-free approach for pain management of all kinds. EFT borrows from the principles of acupuncture, in that it helps you balance out your subtle energy system.

It helps resolve underlying, often subconscious, negative emotions that may be exacerbating your physical pain. By stimulating (tapping) well-established acupuncture points with your fingertips, you rebalance your energy system, which tends to dissipate pain.

  1. Astaxanthin: One of the most effective fat-soluble antioxidants known. It has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and in many cases works far more effectively than anti-inflammatory drugs. Higher doses are typically required and one may need 8 mg or more per day to achieve this benefit.
  2. Ginger: This herb has potent anti-inflammatory activity and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.
  3. Curcumin: In a study of osteoarthritis patients, those who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility.10 A past study also found that a turmeric extract composed of curcuminoids blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the overproduction of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.
  4. Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or "Indian frankincense," this herb contains specific active anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients.
  5. Krill Oil: The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA contained in krill oil have been found by many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for pain.
  6. Bromelain: This enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple, including some of the bromelain-rich stem, may also be helpful.
  7. Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a "joint lubricant" and an anti-inflammatory. I have used this for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards. I used a topical preparation for this.
  8. Evening Primrose, Black Currant, and Borage Oils: These contain the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain.
  9. Cayenne Cream: Also called capsaicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body's supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmits pain signals to your brain.
  10. Methods such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation, hot and cold packs, and even holding hands can also result in astonishing pain relief without any drugs.

Belief not science is behind flu jab promotion, new

report says

1New York An independent meta-analysis of vaccines against influenza has found that claims of benefit have been significantly exaggerated.

The report, released last month by the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, was based on a comprehensive review of data published from 1967 to 2012.

1Evidence for “consistent high-level protection is elusive,” the researchers concluded. Although vaccination was found to provide modest protection from infection in young healthy adults who rarely have complications of flu, the authors found that “evidence for protection in adults 65 years of age and older [who represent over 90% of deaths from flu] . . . is lacking.”

The authors also analyzed recommendations issued by the federal Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which provides expert advice to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and which are “often considered the standard of practice . . .around the globe.” The report cited 30 instances in which its advisory statements “did not apply current standards of scientific rigor . . . and did not cite relevant work.”

The report’s lead author, Michael Osterholm, a former CDC consultant and an internationally recognized expert on flu, told the BMJ that a Dutch study cited by the CDC as evidence of vaccine efficacy was seriously flawed and constituted a “sales job.”

Nevertheless, Osterholm said, the current jab does offer some protection and should be used until a more effective vaccine can be developed.

Joseph Bresee, chief of the epidemiology and prevention branch in CDC’s Influenza Division, told the BMJ , “I do not agree that CDC has inflated the benefits of influenza vaccine.” He added that he agreed with Osterholm that until better vaccines were available the current ones should be recommended.

That recommendation, however, has come under fire from the authors of a Cochrane analysis that also found little to no benefit from flu vaccination.2 Tom Jefferson, lead author of several Cochrane reviews, told the BMJ, “Based on more than a decade of Cochrane reviews in adults, children, [the] elderly, and healthcare workers, there is no credible evidence that the inactivated vaccines have any effect other than saving on average half a working day in healthy adults and avoiding symptoms in those who least need it: healthy adults and adolescents. Depending on the season, you need to immunize 33 to 99 adults to avoid one set of symptoms.”

Osterholm criticized the methods of the Cochrane analysis, saying that the reviewers’ inclusion of studies that used serology titers rather than reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction or cultures to diagnose flu meant that its results were highly inaccurate.

However, he acknowledged that the direction of bias caused by use of serology titers would be to make a vaccine seem far more effective than it was, a surprising bias for a meta-analysis that found no benefit for flu vaccines. The Cochrane reviewers also stated in their meta-analysis that the studies reviewed were “at high risk of bias.”

A growing number of healthcare facilities and states now require healthcare workers to be vaccinated against flu or face being fired or forced to wear masks and identification tags stating that they may be infectious.

A recent editorial in the journal of the Canadian Medical Association,CMAJ, recommending mandatory flu jabs for healthcare staff triggered strong criticism, including a letter to the editor from Peter Doshi, a postdoctoral fellow at Johns Hopkins University, and several Cochrane reviewers, who said that the recommendation was based on a misrepresentation of Cochrane data.

34 Doshi opposes compulsory vaccination. He told the BMJ that health officials “risk losing credibility by continuing to promote the fiction that mandatory influenza vaccination policies are based on solid evidence. They are not, and it is time for healthcare institutions to do their own rigorous assessment of the evidence rather than continuing this dangerous game of follow the leader.” Osterholm agreed that scientific evidence, not professional opinions, should guide policy. He told the BMJ , “I don’t think the data warrant mandated vaccine. If it was up to me, there are a hundred other things I’d mandate first, like mandating that sick healthcare workers don’t come to work. That is far more likely to be effective.”

WELLNESS/PREVENTION:  ASPIRIN RISKS MAY OUTWEIGH BENEFITS IN HEALTHY ADULTS Healthy adults who take daily aspirin to stave off heart disease may be inviting more harm than benefit, according to a new review of past studies. "Too many healthy people think that aspirin will prevent heart attacks and cancer," said Dr. Peter Sandercock of the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. "This shows that if you are healthy, with no symptoms of cardiovascular disease, then it's not sensible to take regular aspirin. It won't improve your health," he told Reuters Health.

IN THE NEWS: HAPPINESS AND LAUGHTER ARE NATURAL IMMUNE BOOSTERS There are many studies supporting the belief that people with an upbeat and positive perspective tend to be healthier and enjoy longer lives. For example, in one study, the tendency to always expect the worst was linked to a 25 percent higher risk of dying before the age of 65. In one of Professor Cole’s happiness studies, participants answered questions about the frequency of certain emotional states, covering two different categories or types of happiness known to psychologists as: Hedonic well-being (characterized by happiness gleaned from pleasurable experiences, such as sex) Eudaimonic well-being (originating with Aristotle, this form of happiness comes from activities that bring you a greater sense of purpose, life meaning, or self-actualization ) Interestingly, while both are positive emotional states associated with happiness, the gene expressions they produced were not identical. Those whose sense of happiness was rooted in the eudaimonic camp were found to have favorable gene-expression profiles, while hedonic well-being produced gene profiles similar to those seen in people experiencing stress due to adversity.

Exercise is a word that might conjure up images of sweating, groaning and hard work. Exercise also brings to mind fitness, endurance and a well shaped body. The type of exercise that a person needs depends on the person's goals. If you want to sculpture your body, then weight lifting might be your fastest form. If you're a G- type then mind/body exercises that concentrate on upper body coordination are best, like kung fu or karate, ballet or jazz dancing. There is no one exercise that fits everybody so finding one you enjoy is the key. Also finding ways to keep motivated are crucial, like having a friend that you exercise with. When it comes to exercise moderation is important. Some people become obsessed and downright addicted to over-exercise. Exercise should not be an excuse for not correcting metabolic problems that you have. It is true exercise can help your metabolism but it won't correct imbalances that are nutritionally related. If you find you are using exercise in that manner you need to go through a nutritional program to balance your metabolism. Also to use exercise to control neck or back pain could be a misuse of exercise. The composition of kefir depends greatly on the type of milk that was fermented, including the concentration of vitamin B12. Many of us have been jaded by the constant onslaught of "the latest" medical news, much of which seems to contradict what we just heard or read about the week before.

But on July 9, millions of us - patients and health care providers alike - paid rapt attention when the federal government's National Institutes of Health released findings from a major clinical trial, warning of the risks associated with a widely used type of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) that combines two female hormones, estrogen and progestin.

It's estimated that 6 million postmenopausal American women currently take Prempro or similar combined estrogen-progestin drugs to ease menopause symptoms and to improve their health and well-being.

The study, called the Women's Health Initiative (WHI), found that the combined drugs caused increases in breast cancer, heart attacks, strokes and blood clots. And those risks outweigh the drugs' actual benefits - a small decrease in hip fractures and a decrease in cases of colorectal cancer. The study was released four years earlier than expected because of researchers' concerns.

The WHI study is the first-ever long-term randomized controlled clinical trial - considered the gold standard by medical researchers - of hormone replacement therapy. The WHI was established in 1991 by the government to address the most common causes of death, disability and impaired quality of life in postmenopausal women. The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of 40 WHI clinical sites nationwide where study participants are seen and monitored.

Using the remote, the power button is the red upper left button the start button is the upper right button. If the unit is on and you push the start button you will stare at level one of the 20 possible levels. If you push the program button "P" lower right then the start button you will start the first programed session of 3. These are 10 min. sessions with 3 different levels at about every 3 mins. I recommend starting at the first program. Each push of "P" will bring you to the next program, then you push the start button.

If you are going to sit or lay on the platform use the lower levels {NOT THE  Programs} you need to get accustom to it first then you can use higher settings.

It's recommended when you first get the unit to position it against the wall or maybe in a corner where you have walls on both sides or between the wall and a piece of furniture for support. For balance and coordination is recommended not to hold onto anything by using the device but until you developed a good sense of balance you might want something you can grab onto if you feel like you're losing your balance.

You can virtually exercise every muscle in your body with this device and you can slide exercise tubing with handgrips under the device to exercise your arms while standing. But the best way to exercise your arms is in the sit up or half set up posture with your arms on the device (start at the lowest setting).
