IN THE NEWS: DR. MANNY: The hidden danger in popular heartburn medications Now, it’s not our fault – many of us are being influenced dramatically by the pharmaceutical industry’s commercialization of medicine. These days, we can’t watch a television show without being bombarded by well-made commercials telling us that there is a pill to cure whatever medical condition we’re suffering from. Now, a new study suggests that people who take proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to treat acid reflux, heartburn and indigestion may be more likely to develop chronic kidney disease than those who don’t take these medications sold – often over-the-counter -- under the brand names of Prevacid, Prilosec and Zegerid. PPIs work by reducing the production of acid in the stomach. (We can help with acid reflux.)

WELLNESS: REASONS TO DRINK FILTERED WATER More than half of the chemicals found in U.S. drinking water are unregulated, and many of the legal limits may be too lenient for safety. Firefighting foam used on military bases and other fire testing sites have contaminated many water tables across the U.S. with PFCs — chemicals linked to thyroid disease and cancer. Agricultural runoff, prescription drugs flushed down the sewer, and aging water pipes are other significant sources of water pollution. Chlorine and fluorine are just some of the chemicals that can damage arteries and led to heart disease. Ask us about a filtration system.

CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic and DNA Repair Can regular Chiropractic care affect you on a genetic level? The answer is yes. But how? DNA is the molecule of life. It contains our genes which make us what we are. DNA makes up our chromosomes which are held in the nucleus of our cells. DNA is very fragile and susceptible to damage from environmental stresses. It is estimated that our cells experience anywhere from 1,000 to 1,000,000 incidences of DNA damage PER DAY. In a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, chiropractors collaborating with researchers at the University of Lund found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair.  These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care. Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplements. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels (the chemical that repairs DNA) than patients with active disease, and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values in non-chiropractic subjects.

FUNNY BONE: I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any.@@ I don't know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.@@ Lying on his deathbed, a loving husband was wavering between life and death when he thought he smelled chocolate chip cookies baking. They were his very favorite, so he dragged himself out of bed, crawled to the kitchen and was just reaching up to take a cookie off the plate when his wife slapped his hand with a spatula. "Don't touch!" she commanded. "They're for the funeral."
