IN THE NEWS: STRESS DURING PREGNANCY LINKED TO INCREASED ASTHMA RISK IN CHILDREN Published April 07, 2014ReutersStress during pregnancy brought on by events like divorce, job loss or death of a loved one appears to be linked to an increased risk of asthma and eczema among children. These findings, Dr. Petra Arck told Reuters Health in an email, could "allow clinicians to evaluate future asthma risk in unborn children using a simple life event assessment questionnaire."Arck, of University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in Germany, and her colleagues note that although there are strong genetic components to asthma and related conditions, these alone do not help explain the unprecedented increase in such diseases in recent years. ADJUSTMENTS REDUCE STRESS
WELLNESS: POPULAR MEDICAL FAD LINKED TO MARKEDLY INCREASED RISK OF CARDIOVASCULAR DEATH About one in every three deaths in the US is attributed to cardiovascular disease, which includes heart attacks and stroke. About 800,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease annually. A quarter of these deaths could be prevented through simple lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy weight, exercising, and managing your diabetes. Your diet is your primary and best tool for the prevention of inflammation that can lead to cardiovascular diseases. Reducing sugars/fructose and grains in your diet is a critical measure to reduce your cardiovascular risk. Compelling research suggests that vitamin D deficiency, combined with cholesterol deficiency (A 2012 study published in the journal Atherosclerosis3 showed that statin use is associated with a 52 percent increased prevalence and extent of calcified coronary plaque compared to non-users. And coronary artery calcification is the hallmark of potentially lethal heart disease!), may be at the heart of the cardiovascular disease phenomenon. Guidelines that will help reduce chronic inflammation and protect against heart disease are included. This includes specific dietary measures, exercise, sun exposure, grounding and much more.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: NUMBNESS Numbness and tingling sensations in the arms, legs and joints is often accompanied by neck pain. While many attribute these sensations to "circulation," or poor sleeping position, they most often result from pinching or irritation of a spinal nerve. The cause of numbness and tingling to the arms often originates in the neck. Perhaps the most common is restriction of movement of a spinal joint. This may cause direct friction to the nerve root as it exits the spine or secondary muscle tightness, which can also produce nerve friction. Factors such as degeneration or thinning of the spinal discs narrow the nerve openings in the spine and predispose to nerve irritation. Those with disc thinning or degeneration, however, respond to treatment well if normal joint movement can be restored with adjustments.
