IN THE NEWS: What You Need to Know About Vitamin C Dosage Vitamin C boosts the immune system, lessens cognitive decline, improves cardiovascular function, reduces oxidative stress, mineralizes bones and may be toxic to cancer cells. The adult RDA for vitamin C, 90 mg a day for men and 75 mg for women, should be much higher, according to a video from James DiNicolantonio, PharmD. Studies have calculated vitamin C saturation on the basis of excretion, which caused them to incorrectly conclude that higher doses are not effective. Optimal doses of vitamin C can be as high as 1,250 mg twice daily; even 2.5 grams per day does not produce full saturation and may have benefits. Vitamin C has been shown to kill lymphoma cells and help fight prostate, pancreatic, hepatocellular, colon, mesothelioma and neuroblastoma cancers. According to The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, vitamin C enhances the immune system by stimulating leukocyte function, antimicrobicidal and natural killer cell activities and lymphocyte proliferation.High levels of vitamin C, according to the journal, also protects: "… against damage to blood vessels and very significantly reduce mortality rates in the elderly. Indeed, Fletcher et al. have measured that men (mean age 80 years) with 100 mg daily vitamin C intake presented a mortality risk nearly half that compared to peer men with a consumption of 50 mg/day. Moreover, men with low serum ascorbate concentrations may have an increased risk of mortality. A large body of evidence demonstrates that high dietary vitamin C supplementation (between 1 and 10 g/day or more …) can enhance resistance to and improve recovery from infectious, degenerative diseases, and certain types of cancer … Large doses of ascorbate have been found to reduce cardiovascular disease risk, lengthen the lifespan of patients with cancer, and … lengthen lifespan in general. Moreover, daily supplementation with 1000 mg of ascorbic acid results in a significant decrease of blood-lead levels associated with the general population."
CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC WORKS Charlie had arm pain for over a year and it started to interfere with his work and home life. IN THE NEWS:School social distancing policies (NaturalHealth365) Remember how much you enjoyed making forts out of blankets and cardboard boxes when you were a kid? Sadly, some school districts are making a disturbing twist on this popular childhood game and turning it into a Draconian measure to impose social distancing and purportedly slow the spread of COVID-19. We’re talking about new school reopening restrictions imposed in Thailand. The photos taken of these young children in their classrooms are honestly jaw-dropping – many of them resembling kids housed in plexiglass prisons. It’s an unnerving testament how far government overreach and complicit herd mentality can take us. In early July, schools in Thailand were given permission to reopen – with what many people are calling oppressive and tone-deaf restrictions. These COVID-19 restrictions include: Clear plastic partitions installed on every student desk-Desks spread out, as well as other space management changes in classrooms and lunch areas to keep children physically separate from their peers-Clear plastic partitions (that look like ominous playpens or kennels) which young children must play in alone-Hand sanitizer and temperature scanners installed at entrances-Mandatory use of face masks for schoolkids – even kindergartners! (Just try to imagine how many times adults touch their masks with unwashed hands … now imagine how distracting and counterproductive these face coverings can be for children)-Some other restrictions, such as capping class sizes at 20 to 25 pupils and regularly sanitizing door knobs and other classroom surfaces, certainly don’t seem quite as unreasonable. But we can only imagine how distracting and fear-inducing it may be for children to see their teachers other school staff members – all clad in masks, of course – obsessively cleaning and wiping down surfaces. What kind of message would this constant cleaning send? It’s as if to say that touching something without first dousing it with antibacterial agents is dangerous. Let’s not forget, of course, the research indicating that excessive use of antibacterial agents and hand sanitizers may actually contribute to an increased incidence of respiratory issues such as allergies and asthma, especially in children. This is because everyday exposure to common environmental germs is a normal and necessary way to support healthy immune system responses.
WELLNESS: YOUR BODY’S CRY FOR WATER Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because your body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, it's important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. Water does more than just quench your thirst and regulate your body's temperature; it also keeps the tissues in your body moist. You know how it feels when your eyes, nose, or mouth gets dry? Keeping your body hydrated helps it retain optimum levels of moisture in these sensitive areas, as well as in the blood, bones, and the brain. In addition, water helps protect the spinal cord, and it acts as a lubricant and cushion for your joints. Adequate water intake enables your body to excrete waste through perspiration, urination, and defecation. The kidneys and liver use it to help flush out waste, as do your intestines. CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic and DNA Repair: Serum Thiol Can regular Chiropractic care affect you on a genetic level? The answer is yes. But how? DNA is the molecule of life. It contains our genes which make us what we are. DNA makes up our chromosomes which are held in the nucleus of our cells. DNA is very fragile and susceptible to damage from environmental stresses. It is estimated that our cells experience anywhere from 1,000 to 1,000,000 incidences of DNA damage PER DAY. If this DNA damage is left and not repaired, our DNA sequences cannot be read or will not be read properly. This will result in abnormal cell function or expression. Going through life, we experience physical, chemical, and emotional dis-stress. These stresses affect the function of the nervous system. The investigators hypothesized that these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level. DNA repair can be measured through blood tests that measure serum Thiol levels. The serum Thiol level is an indicator of the level of DNA repair. The higher serum Thiol, the more DNA repair, and the better your health and aging. In a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, chiropractors collaborating with researchers at the University of Lund found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair. These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care. Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplements. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels than patients with active disease and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values in non-chiropractic subjects.

IN THE NEWS: Masks — The Most Controversial COVID-19 Debate? By: Dr. Joseph Mercola an osteopathic physician (DO)---- Science clearly shows face coverings of various kinds do little if anything to prevent respiratory illnesses caused by aerosolized viruses. Influenza viruses — coronaviruses that cause the common cold and SARS-CoV-2 — all spread via the air, not just via droplets or touching contaminated surfaces. Preventing droplet contamination does not mean you also prevent the transmission of the aerosolized virus. SARS-CoV-2 is a beta-coronavirus with a diameter between 60 nanometers (nm) and 140 nm, or 0.06 to 0.14 microns (micrometers). Virus-laden saliva or respiratory droplets expelled when talking or coughing measure between 5 and 10 microns. N95 masks can filter particles as small as 0.3 microns, so they may prevent a majority of respiratory droplets from escaping, but not aerosolized viruses. Lab testing has shown 3M surgical masks can block up to 75% of particles measuring between 0.02 microns and 1 micron while cloth masks block between 30% and 60% of respiratory particles of this size. Regardless of the mask, it will not prevent you from exhaling or inhaling the aerosolized virus, but cloth masks are clearly the least preferable option if you actually want to reduce the spread of infection, as their ability to block respiratory droplets is also limited.
WELLNESS: Sunscreen Chemicals Accumulate at High Levels in Your Body Results from two studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) show that some sunscreen ingredients enter the bloodstream and accumulate, leading the FDA to review their safety. Researchers found that the absorption of some sunscreen ingredients occurred after only one day of use, and levels in the body could last as long as a week. Studies have found the sunscreen ingredient oxybenzone in human breast milk, amniotic fluid, urine and blood and it may affect endocrine activity. The sunscreen ingredients oxybenzone and octinoxate cause coral bleaching and starve the coral of nutrients, increasing their risk of infection. According to the journal Medical Hypotheses, regular sun exposure is beneficial to your health. Strong warnings from medical associations and the media to avoid sun exposure or to apply sunscreens have resulted in many people being deprived of sunshine's multiple benefits. One of these is vitamin D production, and avoiding the sun may be the reason why so many people are deficient in vitamin D. While it's important to avoid getting sunburned, you need to take care in determining the best way to do that. Obviously, if they have chemicals in them that may not be safe, sunscreens come with their own set of dangers. But, avoiding the sun altogether also isn't good, since that can cause vitamin D deficiencies. This is particularly concerning because a deficiency in vitamin D can put you at risk of other health problems.

IN THE NEWS: COVID Advances New World Order — The Empire of Billionaires In March, the United Nations New World Order (UNNWO) announced its annual International Day of Happiness global campaign, along with a call for solidarity and unity in the global fight against COVID-19. The UNNWO goals, such as ending poverty, hunger, gender inequality and polluted water, sound admirable, but are just pawns used to further a one-world government regime with power concentrated in the hands of a few billionaires. A one-world government tactic that New World Order relies on is media censorship, which the liberal "fact-checking" group Media Matters is now advocating for anyone who doesn’t align with the New World Order mission. The World Health Organization, whose biggest funders include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, aims to vaccinate everyone across the globe by 2030 and to track who has and has not been vaccinated. Finally, the adverse effects of vaccines in general are so well known, even Bill Gates — who is arguably the world's most passionate vaccine advocate — admits that as many as 700,000 could become victims of adverse reactions to the COVID-19 vaccine. It’s side effects — which can include deaths, but also anything from a light fever to a very serious, but not life-threatening event — that Gates specifically mentioned.

A woman in Arkansas brought her baby in to see the doctor, and he determined right away the baby had an earache. He wrote a prescription for eardrops. In the directions he wrote, “Put two drops in right ear every four hours” and he abbreviated “right” as an R with a circle around it. Several days passed, and the woman returned with her baby, complaining that the baby still had an earache, and his little behind was getting really greasy with all those drops of oil. IN THE NEWS: Oregano and rosemary lower blood sugar and prevent diabetes by: Karen Sanders, staff writer | July 19, 2020 (NaturalHealth365) Diabetes, which currently affects more than 10 percent of the American population, is increasing at an unprecedented rate. In fact, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “diabetes or prediabetes affects over 100 million people in the U.S.” An alarming statistic, to say the least! New research: Rosemary and oregano work just like prescription drugs – yet safer. In a study conducted by researchers from the American Chemical Society and published in Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, rosemary and oregano were found to inhibit an enzyme, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, that promotes the secretion of insulin. Protein tyrosine phosphatase – which plays a role in insulin signaling – has led researchers to conclude that the herbs could be useful in preventing and treating diabetes. If you don’t have access to fresh rosemary and oregano, no worries – although, of course, it is always preferable to use fresh, organic herbs whenever possible, the dried “supermarket” version is just as effective when it comes to lowering blood sugar. The researchers tested the effects of both greenhouse-grown and commercial dried extracts. Not surprisingly, they found that the greenhouse version of the herbs had higher levels of beneficial polyphenols and flavonoids. However, the commercial dried extracts functioned just as well to lower blood sugar. Courtesy of their high levels of phytochemicals, both rosemary and oregano are potent inflammation fighters. This pair of herbs is particularly rich in gallic acid, with some samples containing as much 430 micrograms per milligram of dried weight. IN THE NEWS: The COVID-19 Curve Has Been Flattened Even though the COVID-19 curve has been flattened, mainstream media outlets continues to push doomsday predictions of an impending explosion of deaths. According to Stanford University's disease prevention chairman Dr. John Ioannidis, the COVID-19 fatality rate for those under the age of 45 is “almost zero,” and between the ages of 45 and 70, it’s somewhere between 0.05% and 0.3%. So, the fact that young and middle-aged adults are testing positive in droves is not a warning sign of an impending onslaught of deaths, as the risk of death in these age groups is minuscule. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the COVID-19 mortality — which had declined for the last 10 weeks straight — “is currently at the epidemic threshold,” meaning if it declines just a little more, COVID-19 will no longer be considered an epidemic. The sharp increases in “cases” are not proof of disease spread but, rather, the spread of testing.

CHIROPRACTIC: Why do we get sick, why does our body experience pain?There isn't a simple answer to this because there are multiple answers from faulty diet, genetics, toxic environment, injuries etc. etc. How do our bodies function normally? Grey's Anatomy book says the nervous system controls and coordinates every organ, part, and system of the body and relates the individual to their environment. For your stomach to properly digest it is told what to do through the nervous system. To maintain the normal blood sugar in your body the nervous system has to coordinate several organs to properly control blood sugar. For a minute let's just focus on the nervous system and forget about diet, exercise, stress reduction, and detoxification. To put it one way you have a doctor inside, you can cut your hand and if you clean it properly the cut will heal over time without any outside help. That ability to heal itself is important for our ability to stay healthy. The nervous system literally keeps track of thousands upon thousands of incoming impulses that tell it your hormone levels, your cholesterol levels, your protein levels, the number of digestive enzymes that you have produced etc. etc. The brain analyzes that information and formulates appropriate information to send out to the body to maintain homeostasis. Your ability to maintain homeostasis is your ability to stay healthy. Cloud seeding, in which dry ice pellets or silver iodide are applied to certain clouds to modify their output, is used to increase precipitation, decrease hail and clear fog. “In North Dakota, all seeding is done by aircraft. Base-seeding aircraft release seeding agent into updrafts from below the developing storm using a combination of wing-mounted ice nucleus generators and burn-in-place flares. Cloud-top seeding aircraft use ejectable flares and dry ice released directly into the supercooled cloud.” North Dakota reports that cloud seeding produces an estimated 5 percent to 10 percent additional rainfall annually while reducing crop hail losses by 45 percent. A group of North Dakota farmers has asked the County Commission to halt cloud-seeding programs for the remainder of the season, with some opponents suggesting the practice may be making dry conditions worse. June 9, 1972, is a date etched in the memories of many Rapid City, South Dakota, residents. During a period of just six hours, 10 inches of rain fell on the city, adding up to 14 inches overnight. Area streams overflowed and a dam at Canyon Lake failed, leading to massive flooding in the city that killed 238 people and injured 3,000 more.

CHIROPRACTIC: Non-drug therapies may reduce adverse outcomes in service members with chronic pain A new study based on Veterans Affairs health records finds that non-drug therapies given to military service members with chronic pain may reduce the risk of long-term adverse outcomes, such as alcohol and drug disorder and self-induced injuries, including suicide attempts. The findings appeared online Oct. 28, 2019, in the Journal of General Internal Medicine. While in service, the solders received non-drug therapies that included acupuncture, dry needling, biofeedback, chiropractic care, massage, exercise therapy, cold laser therapy, osteopathic spinal manipulation, electrical nerve stimulation, ultrasonography, superficial heat treatment, traction, and lumbar supports. Ultrasonography is a technique that uses echoes of ultrasound pulses to pinpoint objects or areas of different density in the body. In the study, the researchers compared service members with chronic pain who did or didn't receive non-drug therapies and described the links between such treatments in the military and long-term adverse outcomes. They determined that soldiers who received non-drug therapies were at lower risk of being diagnosed with drug use disorders and self-inflicted injuries, such as accidental poisoning and suicidal ideation--which is the thought of taking one's own life. IN THE NEWS: 20% of COVID Patients Caught Disease at Hospital Figures released from NHS England suggest that up to 20% of hospital patients with COVID-19 were infected at the hospital, and Prime Minister Boris Johnson went so far as to call deaths from hospital-acquired COVID-19 an epidemic. A rapid review and meta-analysis of 40 studies found an even higher rate of nosocomial (originating in a hospital) infections, revealing that, among the confirmed patients, the proportions of nosocomial infections were 44% for COVID-19, 36% for SARS and 56% for MERS. The “high-tech” hospitals of modern day, with their enclosed, indoor close quarters, may be facilitating the spread of disease far more so than open-air hospitals of yesteryear. Records from an open-air hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, during the Spanish flu outbreak of 1918 to 1919 suggest that patients and staff there, who were treated outdoors in fresh air and sunlight, were spared the worst of the outbreak. Note: For those who don’t work at maintaining a high immune function by working at maintaining a high level of health then these can be dangerous times. The mere presence of a microorganism does not cause disease. Your immune system has to allow the organism to set up housekeeping to cause disease. This sets the stage for chronic inflammation - and ultimately, DISEASE! CHIROPRACTIC: Low Back Pain: An Ice Pack or the Hot Tub? Many patients perform some self-care when they first hurt their lower back, hoping this will keep them out of a doctor’s office. While home remedies can sometimes make the pain go away, sometimes they don’t. It just depends on what you try. When the back is first hurt, it’s often a sprain/strain type of injury with accompanying muscle spasm. When a nerve in the low back becomes pinched or irritated, the body will protect the delicate nerves by keeping you from moving and risking further nerve injury. The easiest way for the body to do this is to cause the back muscles to spasm in the injured area. Muscle pain can be quite severe and heat can sometimes soothe the pain. For this reason, many patients take to the heating pad or to the hot tub to try and get some relief. This should be avoided in an acute injury because inflammation is present. With inflammation, there is increased heat and the additional heat you provide is like adding gasoline to a fire. The results are usually not good. A better choice with an acute injury is to ice the area, but this also needs to be done with some caution. The simplest ice pack is ice cubes placed in a plastic bag. While effective, you can cause a frostbite injury if you leave the pack on for too long. Once numbness is achieved, the pack should be removed. You should most definitely not fall asleep while the pack is on. If this simple procedure does not solve the problem, it’s best to get your spine checked by a doctor of chiropractic.

IN THE NEWS:Fast-Tracked COVID-19 Vaccine — What Could Go Wrong? The COVID-19 vaccine may in fact be the most fast-tracked vaccine ever created in all history, which necessitates the elimination of required safety testing steps, such as animal testing. Pfizer in collaboration with BioNTech began human trials in the U.S. of a COVID-19 vaccine on May 11, 2020. If successful, the vaccine could be released as early as September 2020 with an FDA-approved Emergency Use Authorization (EUA). Like Moderna and several other competitors, the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine is using messenger RNA (mRNA) rather than live or attenuated (inactivated) viruses grown in animal cells. Previous attempts to create coronavirus vaccines have failed due to coronaviruses triggering production of two different types of antibodies — one that fights disease and one that triggers “paradoxical immune enhancement” that often results in very serious disease and/or death. Vaccines that caused paradoxical immune enhancement initially looked very promising as they produced very robust antibody responses. Yet when exposed to the wild virus, ferrets and children became severely ill and many died.
WELLNESS: The Case for Avoiding Plant Foods — Reckless or Beneficial? Evidence suggests we are descendants of omnivores, and that the increase in brain volume coincides with a transition to hunting for animal game and eating large amounts of animal foods. WELLNESS: High-dose glutathione shows promise in addressing respiratory distress in patients with COVID-19 (NaturalHealth365) In some areas across the country, like New York City, even “suspected cases” of COVID-19 aren’t confirmed because of a lack of testing. Unfortunately, this viral infection can become life-threatening as a result of what’s known as “cytokine storm syndrome.” The end result can be pneumonia and other complications like acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic Stories I have suffered from Migraines since the age of 14. So for the last 20 years I have had no luck in anything any doctor has done for me. I was given prescriptions after prescriptions, my body is now immune to almost all pain pills. One of the medicines did help me, however, after taking these pills, my stomach would hurt so bad I would be doubled over. What a choice, the headaches or the pain of the stomach. I choose the stomach pain. I took everything I could, didn’t care, if it worked I took it, if it didn’t I still tried it. When I realized I was up to 8 pills a day, I decided to go to the chiropractor. The first one I went to, well, he was ok, but it didn’t stop the pain. I found one this year, and am so grateful that I did. I am off of all the pills, and my normal week that use to include a minimum of 4 migraines, is gone. I may have 1 bad migraine for the month!!! I am so impressed that I am working on a flyer for my doctor to let other people know that Chiropractors are not just for fixing a strain. WELLNESS: How Aluminum Damages Your Brain Research has found a strong link between aluminum exposure and Alzheimer’s disease. Patients with a genetic mutation that predisposes them to early onset of Alzheimer’s and more aggressive disease have universally high aluminum content in their brains. According to a British researcher, without aluminum in the brain, Alzheimer’s does not develop. When aluminum was first approved for use in vaccines, it was approved based on its efficacy. It was never actually tested for safety. It was simply assumed to be safe. Aluminum has been shown to cause mitochondrial dysfunction and depletion of adenine-triphosphate (ATP), which sets the stage for virtually any chronic disease. Aluminum salts can increase levels of glial activation, inflammatory cytokines and amyloid precursor protein within the brain. Recent research found the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s vaccine schedule — when adjusted for bodyweight — exposes children to a level of aluminum that is 15.9 times higher than the recommended “safe” level. IN THE NEWS:2019-2020 flu claims 10,000 lives in the U.S., yet Western medicine continues to ignore this one vitamin solution by: Sara Middleton, staff writer | February 18, 2020, The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “estimate” that 14,000 – 36,000 deaths have occurred (due to the flu) since October 2019. Although the CDC does admit: they don’t know exactly how many die because the flu is “not a reportable disease in most areas of the U.S.” Yet, according to other “expert” reports: we’re up to 10,000 deaths so far this season. – with 180,000 cases ending up in the hospital. So, the more important question is: how can we protect more people? Are vaccines (manufactured with last year’s virus) really the answer? Probably not … and maybe that’s why many experts are turning to a surprisingly simple and effective remedy: vitamin C. It turns out that high amounts of this nutrient act like a powerful antiviral and can combat the nutrient-depleting effects of the flu virus. And this is to say nothing of the many other vitamin C health benefits – like a reduced risk of chronic diseases, improved iron absorption, and enhanced cognitive protection with aging. Previously, we reported on a study that showed how daily supplementation with vitamin C (ascorbic acid) reduced cold and flu symptoms by a whopping 85 percent. CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic Adjustments vs. Acupuncture vs. NSAIDsWouldn’t it be nice if we could assess three common types of treatment for neck and back pain to determine which is the most effective? Here is a look at three studies that compared three popular forms of care for chronic spinal pain to determine the short-term and more importantly, the LONG-TERM benefits of chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, and non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs, like Advil). The FIRST published study included a pilot group of 77 patients complaining of chronic spinal pain (neck, mid-back, or low-back pain). These patients were separated into one of the three treatment groups and received either NSAIDs, acupuncture, or chiropractic manipulation. Patients received care for four weeks with outcome measures (questionnaires) used to assess changes in pain and disability. After a 30-day time frame, only patients who received chiropractic manipulation (CM) reached a level of statistically significant improvement, supporting CM to offer the best SHORT-TERM BENEFITS for those with chronic back/neck pain. The SECOND study included 115 patients, again randomized, to receive either one of the same three treatments, but this time the outcome data was gathered two, five, and nine weeks after the start of treatment. Again, those who received chiropractic manipulation (CM) experienced the best overall improvement at nine weeks. The THIRD study involved follow-up from the same patient group from the SECOND study two years later. Once again, participants completed outcome assessments that measure pain and disability. This time, the results showed that only patients in the chiropractic manipulation group maintained long-term improvements in pain and disability. The researchers concluded that chiropractic care was highly recommended especially in Grades 1 and 2 (which includes the majority of neck pain sufferers). Interestingly, many multidisciplinary physician groups now incorporate chiropractic care as part of their “team” approach, which also offers pain management in the form of medications, injections, PT, and when necessary, surgery. They have seen the value of spinal manipulation for neck pain and often seek out chiropractic because it’s safe, beneficial, and cost-effective.

IN THE NEWS: Coronavirus The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is closely monitoring an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by a novel (new) coronavirus first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. Chinese authorities identified the new coronavirus, which has resulted in more than a thousand confirmed cases in China, including cases outside Wuhan City. Additional cases have been identified in a growing number of other international locations, including the United States. There are ongoing investigations to learn more. These illnesses usually only last for a short amount of time. Symptoms may include: runny nose-headache-cough-sore throat-fever-a general feeling of being unwell. Human coronaviruses can sometimes cause lower-respiratory tract illnesses, such as pneumonia or bronchitis. This is more common in people with cardiopulmonary disease, people with weakened immune systems, infants, and older adults. How to protect yourself There are currently no vaccines available to protect you against human coronavirus infection. You may be able to reduce your risk of infection by doing the following: wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds-avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands-avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you have cold-like symptoms, you can help protect others by doing the following: stay home while you are sick-avoid close contact with others-cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then throw the tissue in the trash and wash your hands-clean and disinfect objects and surfaces. For someone who weighs 100 pounds, they should drink between 40 and 50 ounces of water every day. IN THE NEWS: Antacids put your health and nutrition at risk The most popular acid reflux medications — proton pump inhibitors like Nexium, Prilosec and Prevacid, which are taken daily — can have serious side effects and “are not the benign drugs the public thinks they are,” said Dr. Shoshana J. Herzig of Harvard Medical School. Over the past five years, the federal Food and Drug Administration has issued numerous warnings about proton pump inhibitors, saying that long-term use, defined as a year or more, increases the risk of hip, wrist and spine fractures (though studies have found an increase in bone fractures with use over shorter periods). Long-term use can also lead to low levels of magnesium in the blood, which can precipitate seizures, arrhythmias and muscle spasms, according to the F.D.A. The use of these inhibitors for any period of time is also associated with an increase of intestinal infections and a higher risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, a potentially life-threatening disease. An F.D.A. advisory warns patients who use these drugs to contact their health care providers immediately if they develop persistent diarrhea that does not improve. Several studies have also reported that proton pump inhibitors increase the risk for pneumonia in hospital patients; a similar increase was not seen among patients taking a different type of acid-reflux drug called a histamine-2 receptor blocker (a drug like Pepcid or Zantac), Dr. Herzig said. Long-term P.P.I. use may reduce the absorption of other important nutrients, vitamins and minerals besides magnesium, such as calcium, iron and vitamin B12, and has been linked with anemia. However, just before he is put in the car and taken away a cop walks up to him and says, while pointing at the cop that pulled him over, "Sir, this officer tells us that you had committed a robbery, had stolen loot in the trunk of your car, and had a loaded gun in your glove compartment. However, we didn't find any of these things in your car." IN THE NEWS: Scientists Now Know How Sleep Cleans Toxins From the Brain
The synchronized brain waves of non-REM sleep may play a key role in preventing toxins from accumulating in a person's brain. Researchers have been putting in late nights in their Boston University lab. Lewis ran tests until around 3:00 in the morning, then ended up sleeping in the next day. It was like she had jet lag, she says, without changing time zones. It’s not that Lewis doesn’t appreciate the merits of a good night’s sleep. She does. But when you’re trying to map what’s happening in a slumbering human’s brain, you end up making some sacrifices. “It’s this great irony of sleep research,” she says. “You’re constrained by when people sleep.” When we sleep our brains travel through several phases, from a light slumber to a deep sleep that feels like we’ve fallen unconscious, to rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, when we’re more likely to have dreams. Lewis’ work looks at non-REM sleep, that deep phase which generally happens earlier in the night and which has already been associated with memory retention. One important 2013 study on mice showed that while the rodents slept, toxins like beta amyloid, which can contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, got swept away. What she discovered was that during non-REM sleep, large, slow waves of cerebrospinal fluid were washing over the brain. The EEG readings helped show why. During non-REM sleep, neurons start to synchronize, turning on and off at the same time. “First you would see this electrical wave where all the neurons would go quiet,” says Lewis. Because the neurons had all momentarily stopped firing, they didn’t need as much oxygen. That meant less blood would flow to the brain. But Lewis’s team also observed that cerebrospinal fluid would then rush in, filling in the space left behind. The study also could have clinical applications for treating Alzheimer’s. Recent attempts at developing medications have targeted beta amyloid. But drugs that looked promising at first all failed once they got into clinical trials. “This opens a new avenue,” says Nedergaard. Instead of trying to act on one particular molecule, new interventions might instead focus on increasing the amount of cerebrospinal fluid that washes over the brain.
WELLNESS: Imbalance of fatty acids linked to most common age-related diseases Chronic disease is on the rise. Right now, 133 million Americans – nearly half the population – have at least one chronic illness such as diabetes or heart disease. With so much illness prevalent – and with the aging of the population overall – it’s no wonder many individuals are worried about healthy aging. But, could consuming the proper amount of omega 3 fatty acids be part of the solution? Research shows most Americans are not consuming enough omega 3 fatty acids in their diets. Turns out this is hugely problematic, and not just because people aren’t getting enough of these healthy nutrients. People also aren’t consuming the right ratio of fatty acids – which is believed to be a major driver of age-related health problems. Omega 3 fatty acids, including EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), are healthy nutrients found abundantly in fatty fish. Another kind of fatty acids are called omega 6 fatty acids. These are primarily found in foods containing sunflower, cottonseed, soybean, and corn oils – in other words, processed foods. This is exactly why the modern diet (which is heavy with processed foods) causes humans to consume way more omega 6 fatty acids and not enough omega 3 fatty acids. In ancient history, our ancestors’ diet included a more balanced omega 6 to omega 3 ratio of about 4 to 1. Today’s typical human has a ratio of 20 to 1! Why is this extreme ratio so bad for health and believed to be driving age-related diseases? Well, the most common type of omega 6 fatty acid (called linoleic acid) gets transformed in the body into a substance that promotes inflammation and blood vessel constriction. While this isn’t necessarily “bad,” it is bad when so much omega 6 is being consumed that these inflammatory and blood vessel changes becomes chronic and widespread, which we see in things like heart disease. NOTE: do you need more omega 3, 6 or 9. Getting Vega testing can help determine your balance.

Ginger tea When it comes to treating a common cold, ginger is one of the best foods for relief. In a review published in the International Journal of Preventative Medicine, researchers summarized that ginger’s potent anti-inflammtory properties were key in the root’s powers to combat a cold or flu. Oranges are packed with vitamin C, an essential nutrient when you’re feeling under the weather. Water When you’re feeling sick, good ol’ H2O can be one of the most helpful drinks to sip. Staying hydrated can help loosen trapped mucus. Greek yogurt is filled with sickness-fighting probiotics and is packed with more protein than regular yogurt. A meta-analysis published in the journal Korean Journal of Family Medicine found that probiotics can help to prevent and treat the common cold. Blueberries are filled with antioxidants that can help treat and prevent coughs and colds. According to research conducted by the University of Auckland, consuming flavonoids — a class of antioxidants found in blueberries — made adults 33 percent less likely to catch a cold than those who did not eat flavonoid-rich foods or supplements daily. Ginseng tea is popular for more reasons than its delicious taste. Namely, the tea has been used as a treatment for upper respiratory tract infections (aka the common cold). Wild salmon is filled with zinc, a nutrient that has been proven to assist with reducing common cold symptoms. Green tea is one of the best sources for fighting off a cold. It contains flavonoids, an antioxidant that boosts immunity, and has anti-inflammatory properties, according to a study published in the Journal of Indian Society of Periodontology. Garlic has built a reputation for being one of the best cold-curing foods, and for good reason. A review of the food published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews showed that a group of participants in a study who ate garlic over a three-month period only had 24 cases of the common cold total, a significant decrease in comparison to the 65 cases reported by the control group.
IN THE NEWS: Get dramatic relief from the symptoms of menopause naturally The good news: Multiple clinical studies demonstrate the efficacy of Siberian rhubarb. Used in Germany for over a quarter of a century to treat menopause symptoms, Siberian rhubarb extract is derived from the rhizomes (or underground stems) of rhapontic rhubarb, which is botanically known as Rheum rhaponticum. In a landmark study published in Menopause, researchers gave either a placebo or 4 mg of Siberian rhubarb extract a day to a group of 109 women suffering from symptoms of perimenopause. And, the results were dramatic! The rhubarb group experienced a 54 percent decrease in total symptom scores, as measured by the Menopause Rating Scale (since 2004, the MRS has been acknowledged as the gold standard for evaluating menopausal symptoms). In addition, there were “significant improvements” in all 11 menopause symptoms. In other words, there was no symptom that did not respond to the therapy – truly encouraging news! No adverse effects were reported, leading the team to conclude that the extract was well tolerated and safe.
