IN THE NEWS: Virtual reality affects brain’s ‘GPS cells’ Researchers recorded rats’ brain activity while the rodents ran on tiny treadmills in a virtual reality setup. In the virtual world, the animals’ brains did not form a mental map of their surroundings like the ones they form in real-life settings, the study showed. Scientists have found that brain cells act as a positioning system, by creating a mental map of an environment from visual input as well as sounds, smells and other information. The discovery of these “GPS cells” was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

Cans and plastic bottles are lined with a controversial chemical called BPA, and while the CDC still says the chemical’s health effects are unclear, research on chronic exposure has linked it to high blood pressure and heart rate issues. Urine tests showed that those who drank from cans saw BPA levels up to 1,600% higher than those who drank from bottles, according to a post at Eureka Alert. What’s more, both BPA and blood pressure rose significantly in can-drinkers within a matter of hours, the New York Times reports, noting that this is one of the first studies to illustrate the potential risks of a just one BPA exposure. Never buy bent cans due to aluminum contamination.

WELLNESS:Hormone loss may be involved in colon cancer, study says While some cancers, such as breast and prostate cancer, are caused by an increase in hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, scientists have not yet identified a type of cancer driven by a lack of hormones. But researchers at Thomas Jefferson University found that colon cancer cells may become cancerous when they lose the ability to produce a hormone that helps maintain normal biology. Researchers studied 281 patients with colon cancer. In more than 85 percent of patients, overall production of the hormone guanylin decreased 100 to 1,000 times. Comparing healthy colon tissue with cancerous colon tissue, researchers were unable to detect the hormone in the cancerous tissue. NOTE: guanylin stimulated by salt, vegetables are a natural source of sodium.

 IN THE NEWS: Hookah smoke contains cancer-causing chemical People who smoke a hookah or inhale secondhand hookah smoke may be breathing in the chemical benzene, a substance that previous research has linked with an increased risk of leukemia, according to a new study. In the study, researchers collected urine samples from 105 hookah smokers before and after they smoked from a hookah, a pipe that’s used to smoke flavored tobacco. They also collected urine samples from 103 people who didn’t smoke hookah tobacco but attended events where they’d be exposed to hookah smoke, to test the effect of secondhand hookah smoke on these people’s bodies. The researchers found that urine levels of a compound called S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), which forms when benzene is broken down in the body, increased more than fourfold in the hookah smokers who smoked at a hookah lounge, and increased almost twofold in the people who smoked hookah tobacco at home.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK:RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS this is the season for sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, colds and chronic cough. Probably the most common reason is the lower humidity due to the cold air and the action of heaters that dry the air out. Dry air sucks the moisture out of your body. As the moisture leaves, the body mobilizes the oil soluble vitamins particularly vitamin A to compensate. Scientists said the ongoing study of 24 students, ages 16 to 18, from a Winston-Salem, N.C. high school, is the largest and most comprehensive research of its kind. Whitlow said the heaviest hitters exhibited the most brain changes, while the light hitters had fewer brain changes at the end of the season. “The important thing to note is although we’re seeing these changes, none of these players are experiencing any common symptoms of concussion,” Whitlow said.

As a recent news article reported the current flu shot has missed the correct strain again. Even though the pharmaceutical companies are trying to put a happy face on it don’t count on the flu shot being very effective this year again. I’m not sure if in the past five or so years they’ve ever gotten the strain right. If the theory of immunization is correct, and it’s still a theory because it can’t be absolutely proven, then you need to have a correct representation of the organism you are trying to develop an immunity to. Humidity is extremely important. During colder months home heating systems will dry the air out and thus your respiratory system. It’s essential to have a humidity gauge in order to determine your humidity, particularly in the bedroom. Healthy humidity is between 40 and 60%. During the wintertime the humidity could easily reach below 20%. IN THE NEWS:Poor sleep tied to inflammation in teens Teens who don’t get enough sleep may be at risk for chronic problems later in life from increased inflammation throughout the body, according to a new study. Those who didn’t get enough sleep during the week and especially those who slept longer on weekends had higher inflammation levels tied to heart disease and diabetes, researchers report in Sleep Medicine. Investigators used blood tests to measure kids’ C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. High levels indicate that the body is in “inflammation mode,” said lead author Martica Hall of the psychiatry department at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. “Frankly, high CRP over a long period of time is bad for everything,” Hall said. “We say it increases the risk of ‘all things bad.’”

FUNNY BONE: SHOPLIFTER My friend, the manager of a grocery store, nabbed a shoplifter in the act. He was escorting the suspect to the office in the front of the store (near the cash registers), when the shoplifter broke from his grip and tried to run.
