DIET:4 health benefits of cinnamon Better heart healthIn a recent study from Penn State, researchers found that a diet rich in spices, like cinnamon and turmeric, helped curb the negative effects of downing a fatty meal. Blood sugar regulation In research led by U.S. Department of Agriculture, scientists found that antioxidant-rich cinnamon extract helped reduce risk factors associated with diabetes and heart disease. Better brain function Research shows that just smelling cinnamon enhances cognitive processing, but consuming it significantly ups brain function. Parkinson’s protection In animal research supported by grants from National Institutes of Health, scientists found that after ground cinnamon is ingested, it’s metabolized into a substance called sodium benzoate, which enters into the brain. In mice with Parkinson’s, the positive effects included neuron protection, normalized levels of neurotransmitters, and improved motor functions.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Carpal tunnel syndrome pain in the wrist and hand along with numbness is usually involvement of the median nerve that runs from the neck down into the fingers. Misalignments in the neck can be a common cause for this condition; surgery is rarely the appropriate treatment. Certain B vitamin deficiencies can be behind the painful nerve condition. A combination of chiropractic care, specific exercises, appropriate therapies, and nutritional therapy can resolve this in most all cases.
FUNNY BONE: Dollar Tree bought Family Dollar for about $8 billion. It would have been $10 billion, but Family Dollar was dented. One Christmas, my grandfather gave me a boxof broken glass. He gave my brother a box of Band-Aids and said, “You two share.” Can’t believe the National Spelling Bee ended in a tye. Richard Branson has announced plans to develop a new type of plane that can fly from New York to Tokyo in one hour. Apparently, the engines are powered by human screams.

IN THE NEWS:Here's why you might want to stop drinking out of cans Might want to make your next six-pack glass bottles. Cans and plastic bottles are lined with a controversial chemical called BPA, and while the CDC still says the chemical's health effects are unclear, research on chronic exposure has linked it to high blood pressure and heart rate issues. Urine tests showed that those who drank from cans saw BPA levels up to 1,600% higher than those who drank from bottles, according to a post at Eureka Alert. What's more, both BPA and blood pressure rose significantly in can-drinkers within a matter of hours, the New York Times reports, noting that this is one of the first studies to illustrate the potential risks of a just one BPA exposure. Never buy bent cans due to aluminum contamination.

IN THE NEWS: Hookah smoke contains cancer-causing chemical People who smoke a hookah or inhale secondhand hookah smoke may be breathing in the chemical benzene, a substance that previous research has linked with an increased risk of leukemia, according to a new study. In the study, researchers collected urine samples from 105 hookah smokers before and after they smoked from a hookah, a pipe that's used to smoke flavored tobacco. They also collected urine samples from 103 people who didn't smoke hookah tobacco but attended events where they'd be exposed to hookah smoke, to test the effect of secondhand hookah smoke on these people's bodies. The researchers found that urine levels of a compound called S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), which forms when benzene is broken down in the body, increased more than fourfold in the hookah smokers who smoked at a hookah lounge, and increased almost twofold in the people who smoked hookah tobacco at home.
WELLNESS: Surprising Finding: Gut Microbes Make Dark Chocolate Healthy Dark chocolate, especially raw cacao powder, has pronounced health benefits, provided you eat it in moderation Bacteria in your gut break down and ferment the components in dark chocolate and cacao, turning them into absorbable anti-inflammatory compounds that benefit your health One meta-analysis8 published in 2011 found that those who ate the highest amounts of dark chocolate had a 37 percent reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and a 29 percent lower risk for stroke, compared to those who consumed the least. Besides antioxidants, chocolate also contains other potent plant compounds, including anandamide, named after the Sanskrit word for "bliss," which is a neurotransmitter in the brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and anxiety. Caffeine and theobromine in chocolate have been shown to produce higher levels of physical energy and mental alertness, and there are likely many more healthy chocolate compounds that have yet to be discovered. Best if above 85% cocoa, most labels will tell.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Blood sugar problems Both hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemia particularly type II diabetes respond well to a combination of chiropractic adjustments to restore function to the pancreas, liver and adrenals and nutritional therapy and diet to reestablish proper chemical balance. If you or somebody you know suffers from blood sugar imbalances call for appointment and get on the road to better health.
FUNNY BONE:Calling Collect My mother was away all weekend at a business conference. During a break, she decided to call home collect. My six-year-old brother picked up the phone and heard a stranger's voice say, "We have a Marcia on the line. Will you accept the charges?" Frantic, he dropped the receiver and came charging outside screaming, "Dad! They've got Mom! And they want money!"

Benign essential tremor, also known as familial tremor or hereditary tremor is a progressive neurological condition that causes a rhythmic trembling of the hands, head, voice, legs or trunk. As with Katherine Hepburn many people mistake this condition with Parkinson's disease (tremor is a primary symptom of Parkinson's Disease). Other types of tremors are progressive disorders which need to be addressed with the appropriate medical and nutritional supplements in the hope of decreasing further degradation. Some other causes of tremors are cardiovascular stroke, head injuries, multiple sclerosis, stress, overactive thyroid, Magnesium or B Vitamin deficiency.
Possible causes of tremors
Excessive consumption of stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol (detoxification), nicotine, amphetamines and corticosteroids.
Exposure to mercury or heavy metal toxicity.
Side effects of pharmaceutical medications.
Nutritional deficiencies
Thyroid issues
Nervous system disorders
Excessive consumption of artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame
High levels of beta-carboline (Harman) from meat, soy or egg
Diet tips for nervous system health
Reduce consumption of caffeine based products
Avoid using artificial sweeteners
Stop meat, soy and eggs for a period of time
Eat Flava beans and Cowhage (Velvet bean) because they contains high concentrations of an amino acid known as L-dopa (dopamine).
Lifestyle tips for nervous system health
Avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine
Treat underlying nervous system tension
Address thyroid problems
Natural remedies for nervous system health
The Amino Acid Isoleucine - a component of proteins, reduces excitation of nerve fibres
Magnesium - improves neuromuscular transmission of signals across the nerve synapses to reduce excessive muscular contraction
CoQ10 - antioxidant, provides lipids to help protect the myelin sheath (electrical conduction), electrical potentiation of nerve signals
Alpha-lipoic acid - improves synthesis of energy within the muscles, antioxidant, reduces neural damage
Lecithin - protects the nerve sheaths from degradation and helps electroconductivity of the nerves
Fish oil - improves cell to tissue communication due to Docosahexanoic acid (DHA) content, maintenance of cellular membrane structure and fluidity, decreases inflammation
Homeopathics - Agaricus, Gelsemium, Magnesium Phosphate, Stramonium, Potassium Phospate, Passiflora, Chamomilla, Zincum Met., Phosphorus or Silica. These Homeopathic remedies may help to relieve nerve tension.
Herbal medicines that may assist to support the nervous system and adrenals are Oats, magnolia, chamomile, passionflower, ginkgo, St. John’s Wort, Ma Huang, Kava, siberian ginseng, licorice, sacred basil, withania, alfalfa, lavender, valerian, skullcap, lemon balm and zyziphus.
1 Food sources that help with serotonin production - foods high in B-vitamins (brown rice, chicken, corn ,eggs, green leafs, legumes, meat, nuts, peas, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast), Calcium (almonds, brewer's yeast, green leafs and cruciferous vegetables, fish with bones, sesame seeds, tofu), Magnesium (green leafs, brown rice, sesame seeds, shrimp, salmon) and Tryptophan (turkey, soy foods, peanuts, almonds).
2 Essential fatty acids necessary for serotonin production are the omega 3's (fish oils found in mackerel, salmon, sardine, tuna; walnut oil, flax oil) and 6's (canola oil, chicken, eggs, flax, grape seed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, turkey, wheat germ oil) as well as Gamma-Linolenic Acid (black current oil, bluegreen algae, borage oil, evening primrose oil). I've also read that most people have an excess of omega 6's and need to decrease the amount of 6's in their diet in order for the 3's to function well. I guess most of us are lacking in 3's.
3 Long-term stress depletes serotonin levels. Short term stress actually increases serotonin, but after time you get burn-out and it becomes increasingly difficult for the body to produce serotonin. So reduce stress--this can be as simple as adding exercise and meditation to the daily routine or as life changing as choosing to leave a really stressful job.
4-Avoid stimulants because they deplete serotonin over time--this works the same was stress does. We're talking things like caffeine, refined carbohydrates, chocolate, sugar as well as the heavier stimulants like cold remedies, alcohol, street drugs, diet pills and tobacco.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK:RESPIRATORY PROBLEMS this is the season for sinusitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, flu, colds and chronic cough. Probably the most common reason is the lower humidity due to the cold air and the action of heaters that dry the air out. Dry air sucks the moisture out of your body. As the moisture leaves, the body mobilizes the oil soluble vitamins particularly vitamin A to compensate. Vitamin A supplies moisture and health to the mucous membranes of your sinuses, bronchial tubes and lungs. As a vitamin A level diminishes along with the vitamin D, your immune system becomes compromised and the above health problems develop. Keep the humidity, particularly in your bedroom, above 40% also asked to be checked on vitamin A and D to see if you need to increase it.
DIET: STUDY: MIDNIGHT SNACKS COULD HURT YOUR MEMORY UCLA researchers say they're seeing—at least in mice—a decline in memory when food is consumed during typical sleep hours. "Those animals that were misaligned show severe deficits in their recall of the training that they received," Researchers also found that the strength of neural connections suffered among the population with a misaligned eating schedule, meaning they not only recalled less quickly but learned less quickly, too.
IN THE NEWS: EVEN WITHOUT CONCUSSION, HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PLAYERS EXHIBIT BRAIN CHANGES, STUDY SAYS High school football players can undergo significant brain changes after only a single season— even if they don’t get a concussion, Wake Forest University researchers have found. Scientists said the ongoing study of 24 students, ages 16 to 18, from a Winston-Salem, N.C. high school, is the largest and most comprehensive research of its kind. Whitlow said the heaviest hitters exhibited the most brain changes, while the light hitters had fewer brain changes at the end of the season. “The important thing to note is although we’re seeing these changes, none of these players are experiencing any common symptoms of concussion,” Whitlow said.
FUNNY BONE:We spend the first twelve months of our children’s lives teaching them to walk and talk and the next twelve telling them to sit down and shut up. Wife – You hate my relatives! Husband – No, I don’t! In fact, I like your mother-in-law more than I like mine. My husband, an avid golf player couldn’t help challenging my boastful son to a game of golf. He was in for quite a surprise when on the first swing my son got a hole in one. “OK” my quick-thinking husband said while subtlety winking at me “now, I will take my practice shot, and then we will start.”

The up-and-coming flu season:
As a recent news article reported the current flu shot has missed the correct strain again. Even though the pharmaceutical companies are trying to put a happy face on it don't count on the flu shot being very effective this year again. I'm not sure if in the past five or so years they've ever gotten the strain right. If the theory of immunization is correct, and it's still a theory because it can't be absolutely proven, then you need to have a correct representation of the organism you are trying to develop an immunity to. They missed it again this year. The flu shot their offering does not have the correct strain of the flu for your body to react to.
What can you do for flu prevention?
First of all giving the flu shot is truly a shot in the dark. The fact is people that have gotten the flu shot still get the flu and people who don't get the flu shot don't get the flu. It's a matter of resistance. Good health is the best resistance to the flu. Eating right for your body type and blood type is number one. Getting plenty of fluids, mainly water is important. Remember half your body weight converted to oz.s is your cleansing dose. A 100 lb. person should drink 50 oz. a day as a cleansing dose of water. 80% of your cleansing dose is the minimum amount of fluids per day. That same hundred pound person should drink no less than 40 oz. a day. So if you feel like you're starting to come down with something drink your cleansing dose. Vitamin A&D and C. are key nutrients for the immune system. The best nutritional support would be one of the immune formulas that we carry. By Vega testing we can identify the best formula for you. These formulas support the immune system with the key nutrients that you would be lacking in order for your immunity to be low.
Humidity is extremely important. During colder months home heating systems will dry the air out and thus your respiratory system. It’s essential to have a humidity gauge in order to determine your humidity, particularly in the bedroom. Healthy humidity is between 40 and 60%. During the wintertime the humidity could easily reach below 20%. As your sinuses and lungs dry out the barrier your mucous membranes supply is compromised and thus viruses can get into the system easier. The body’s response to this drying of the hair, skin and mucous membranes is to mobilize your vitamin A stores. As your vitamin A levels go down so does your immune system that’s why we recommend A&D more during the dry months of winter. I recommend an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier as it puts the most moisture into the air.
Light deficiency can affect some people's immune system's. If you're one of those people who get a little blue or depressed during the winter months you would benefit from full spectrum light bulbs in your house. As well as spending time outdoors during bright sunlight days. Full spectrum light bulbs can be purchased on the Internet or at the local health food stores. These light bulbs contain the full spectrum of light that the sun delivers. People with strong immune systems don't get the flu. Stress is a big immune system suppressor. Exercise can help the effects of stress. Spinal adjustments are one of the best ways to distress your body and the immune system. Patients who get regular chiropractic adjustments have a 200% more effective immune response. We also have a homeopathic virus mix that helps tuneup the body's response to viruses. Combining two or more of these principles can go a long ways to preventing the flu this year.

WELLNESS/PREVENTION: Drink This Daily and Clobber Blood Pressure Researchers in Taiwan discovered a 65% lower risk of high blood pressure for men and women who drank at least 20 ounces of green tea daily for at least a year. Even study participants that drank a minimum of 4 ounces of green tea daily for a year showed a 46% lower risk of high blood pressure. That's good news if you struggle with blood pressure problems or have a family history. Two studies showed that it's the catechins in green tea, especially EGCG that act as a natural ACE inhibitor. ACE is an enzyme that leads to uncontrolled vascular constriction which causes blood pressure to rise
IN THE NEWS:Poor sleep tied to inflammation in teens Teens who don’t get enough sleep may be at risk for chronic problems later in life from increased inflammation throughout the body, according to a new study. Those who didn’t get enough sleep during the week and especially those who slept longer on weekends had higher inflammation levels tied to heart disease and diabetes, researchers report in Sleep Medicine. Investigators used blood tests to measure kids’ C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. High levels indicate that the body is in “inflammation mode,” said lead author Martica Hall of the psychiatry department at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. “Frankly, high CRP over a long period of time is bad for everything,” Hall said. “We say it increases the risk of ‘all things bad.’”CONDITION OF THE WEEK: NUMBNESS AND TINGLING IN THE EXTREMITIES this condition has multiple causes. Probably the most common cause is pressure on the nerves that go down the arm or leg. Adjustments resolve this condition most of the time. Certain B vitamin deficiencies, blood sugar problems, circulatory problems are some of the other conditions that can cause these problems. If you or somebody you know suffers from numbness or tingling a chiropractic checkup could help find the cause. FUNNY BONE: SHOPLIFTER My friend, the manager of a grocery store, nabbed a shoplifter in the act. He was escorting the suspect to the office in the front of the store (near the cash registers), when the shoplifter broke from his grip and tried to run. After a scuffle, my friend pinned him against the wall and looked up to see a number of surprised customers staring at him. "Everything's fine, Folks," he reassured them. "This guy just tried to go through the express line with more than ten items." |
