When healthcare makes you sick

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

The last thing you might expect going to a doctor for a health problem is becoming a drug addict in the process. In the U.S., painkiller addiction is so rampant that 91 Americans die every day from an overdose of prescription opioids or heroin.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

In 1986 the government sent a report to every doctor and healthcare facility in the US. That report was based on extensive research into back pain. Most people might not realize that low back pain is the number 1 health problem in the United States. It’s responsible for more time off work, the high cost of rehabilitation on top of the extra high cost of surgery. Since surgery is only 20 to 30% effective and cost a lot of money the government decided to find the most effective treatment for back pain. After they evaluated all the research from around the world the number 1 active treatment they recommended was spinal adjustments. And so they sent this report to every healthcare facility in the United States in hopes of saving the country money.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Unfortunately this report was largely ignored. Surgeons kept doing ineffective surgery, and drug therapist kept giving more powerful painkillers. Today if you listen to news reports you realize we are having an opiate addiction problem like none other. Even though opiates can block pain they also cause a lot of drug addicts to this deadly drug. Since our healthcare system seems to focus more on gaining power over helping patients then you have to be your own protector. Just because a doctor writes your prescription doesn’t mean that prescription is going to be both safe and effective for you.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Studies have shown over the past 50 years or so that there are over 2000 people who die every week from prescriptions they get from their doctor. These statistics only come from hospital bound patients we’re not for sure how many a week die who are not hospitalized. 2000 a week is like 3 jumbo jets crashing every week with no survivors for the past 50 years. There are over a million hospitalizations related to drug therapy per year. Now I would be the 1st to say that in certain conditions drugs are necessary to keep a person alive i.e. insulin for type 1diabetes. But the percent of the population who needs prescriptions to survive is a very low percent. Most people’s conditions could be safely and effectively resolved through natural healthcare and chiropractic.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

A seven-year study showed that patients whose primary physician was a chiropractor, experienced these results: 60% less hospital admissions, 59% less days in the hospital, 62% less outpatient surgeries, 85% less in pharmaceutical costs.  Not only is natural healthcare/chiropractic substantially more effective in the countries’ number 1 health problem (low back pain) nutritional therapy and chiropractic can effectively resolve most nonemergency health challenges.

If you’re having a heart attack you need to be in the hospital but after you’re released, if you want to fix the underlining problem that led to the heart attack, then drugs are not going to help you very much. Natural healthcare/chiropractic focuses on the underlying cause of disease. For instance type II diabetes is a growing problem in our society and drugs do not correct that, insulin might be essential in type I diabetes for those bodies who can’t make insulin so you have to take it in order to stay alive. But conditions like type II diabetes are related to dietary faults and the subsequent over stressing of the bodies sugar management systems. Simple dietary changes along with targeted nutritional therapy can help the cells recognize insulin and self-regulate blood sugar levels.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

I don’t care if we are talking about allergies, blood pressure, autoimmune problems, and hormone problems in a high percent of cases you simply find the cause and correct the cause and health is the result. But we live in a pharmaceutical controlled society when it comes to healthcare. Multibillion dollar pharmaceutical companies have taken over healthcare and most clinics and hospitals. Unfortunately their bottom line is not your health but their bank account.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Just because you can take a drug and that drug may make acid reflux feel better doesn’t mean that’s the correct approach. Shutting down your digestive system at the level of the stomach will deftly remove acid that might burn your esophagus but it will also remove the initial digestive process to properly digest and absorb nutrients from what you eat. That’s why studies of people who have taken antacids for long periods of time develop signs and symptoms of malnutrition. When you mess with the digestive system you mess with life. Acid reflux like headaches or back pain have a cause. Never is that because of a lack of pharmaceuticals.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Unfortunately in today’s healthcare system symptom relief has become the dominant approach. That makes as much sense as clipping the wire to the warning light on your dashboard and thinking you’ve taken care of something, yes the warning light has gone off but the problem still there. This is one of the reasons why chronic disease has skyrocketed over the past 40 years. Who would guess it? If you don’t fix the problem it just becomes much worse.

Natural healthcare/chiropractic offers a completely different approach to health care in that we don’t play the symptom relief came. Our total focus is on finding the cause and then developing effective strategies to resolve the cause. When the cause is eliminated so are the symptoms.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

You might think all doctors have this mindset but not if their primary treatment is pharmaceuticals. Except in very rare cases pharmaceuticals are never the appropriate treatment for most healthcare problems. If you have reoccurring headaches then either you have vertebra in your neck out of place or you have toxicity issues or possibly hormonal issues that need to be corrected. Painkillers don’t fix any of those possible causes. Painkillers are the biggest killers in drug therapy. Several well-known painkillers have been taken off the market over the past 20 years because of the death rate. And opiates will not only kill you but they can cause a lifetime addiction and they don’t fix at all the underlying cause for pain.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

Buyer beware is a important slogan to protect yourself in the marketplace. Unfortunately in today’s healthcare system you need to take responsibility for yours and your families choices in healthcare.

IN THE NEWS: Studies show it’s time to make chiropractic the 1st approach with back pain. In the U.S., painkiller addiction is so rampant that 91 Americans die every day from an overdose of prescription opioids or heroin. Prescription opioids such as oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine and methadone are widely prescribed for pain relief. Initially, they were intended to treat severe pain following surgery or injury or pain due to illnesses such as cancer. However, they’re now increasingly prescribed for many types of pain, including chronic back pain or pain from osteoarthritis. Opioid prescriptions nearly quadrupled in the U.S. between 1999 and 2013, despite reported pain levels remaining stagnant. Meanwhile, the CDC reports, “Deaths from prescription opioids — drugs like oxycodone, hydrocodone and methadone — have more than quadrupled since 1999,” rising right along with the numbers of prescriptions. The problem with opioids is that many people start taking them for mild to moderate pain, only to develop a tolerance, which means you need to take more to get the same relief. Physical dependence can also develop, leading to symptoms of withdrawal if you try to cut back or quit the drugs cold turkey. Ironically, opioids can even lead to an increased sensitivity to pain, causing patients to reach for more and more of the drugs. Addiction and overdose, which can be fatal, are all-too-common next steps. In fact, up to 1 out of 4 Americans receiving long-term opioid prescriptions struggle with addiction, according to the CDC. “There’s maybe a 20 percent to 25 percent success rate of spinal fusion for back pain. And the downside of a failed spine surgery is terrible. It’s really bad. These people are condemned to live their entire lifetime, 30 to 40 more years, in chronic pain.” Chiropractic Offers Benefits Beyond Pain Relief One of the major benefits of choosing chiropractic over a drug solution is that the former can help relieve your pain while offering you whole-body benefits. For instance, research by Dr. Dean Harrison and others suggests chiropractic treatments can help prevent progressive spinal degeneration, i.e., osteoarthritis or disc disease. Just like regular dental care will prolong the useful life of your teeth, getting regular chiropractic treatments can do the same for your spine. Further, contrary to popular belief, chiropractic can be used to optimize wellness, not just treat pain. According to Dr. Billy DeMoss, a chiropractor with a practice in Newport Beach, California, “Chiropractic is like brushing your teeth.” It’s something you need to do on a regular basis to maintain the life of your spine, because regular activities, such as chronic sitting, can contribute to its functioning less than optimally.

WELLNESS: The health benefits of magnesium soap Topical magnesium, a method of delivering minerals to the body through the skin, may seem at first mysterious and new, but it’s based on both age-old principles and cutting edge science. Have you ever used a patch to help you quit smoking, or to alleviate pain? What about Ben Gay? Or how about that expensive skin creme you bought to help give your skin a healthy glow? If you’ve used or are familiar with any of these products, then you are familiar with the basic concepts behind topical applications of magnesium. 10 ways more magnesium can improve your health:1. Help your immune system out with a little magnesium 2. Bacteria and germs in the gut can be regulated with magnesium use 3. Your muscles and nerves function better with magnesium 4. Control inflammation in the body 5. Prevent osteoporosis from affecting your bones 6. Blood pressure 7. Prevent toxins from affecting and harming you 8. Restore your daily energy levels 9. Help manage your diabetes 10. Help reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. Pick up magnesium soap on your next visit to Keefe Clinic.

CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic and Leg Length (health is balance)  Because the spinal cord is housed by the spine and the exiting nerve roots communicate with the autonomic nerves that basically run our organ function, maintaining alignment of the spine and pelvis is very important to minimize nerve irritation and subsequent health-related problems. The focus of this article is on leg length, its effect on our posture, methods of assessment, and treatment. Leg length plays and important role in posture. When there is a difference in leg length, the pelvis cannot maintain a level position, and because the spine’s base is the pelvis, it cannot stay straight if there is a leg length discrepancy. Doctors of all disciplines realize the importance of leg length, especially orthopedic surgeons as they consider a hip or knee replacement! There are many causes of leg length issues, and some include a genetic predisposition (inherited) or trauma during bone growth years. From a treatment standpoint, a heel lift (with or without arch supports) can be placed into the shoe on the short leg side. Unfortunately, there is not a 1 to 1 mm correction of the leg length deficiency with heel lifts. In adults, it has been reported that about a 66% correction occurs, which means a 10 mm lift would result in around a 6.6mm leg length deficiency correction.

DIET: Is Bone Broth the New Super Food? Bone broth contains a variety of valuable nutrients, including calcium, collagen, and bone marrow, in a form your body can easily absorb and use. Homemade bone broth may help reduce joint pain and inflammation, promote strong bones and boost hair and nail growth. There’s something inherently soothing about sipping on a warm cup of broth, and it really does have medicinal potential.  For starters, bone broth is used as the foundation of the GAPs diet, which is based on the Gut and Psychology Syndrome (GAPS) principles developed by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride. It forms the foundation because it is so healing to your gut. Additional benefits of bone broth include the following: Reduces joint pain and inflammation, courtesy of chondroitin sulfate, glucosamine, and other compounds extracted from the boiled down cartilage and collagen. Inhibits infection  Recent studies on cartilage, which is found abundantly in homemade broth, show it supports the immune system in a variety of ways; it’s a potent normalizer, true biological response modifier, activator of macrophages, activator of Natural Killer (NK) cells, rouser of B lymphocytes, and releaser of Colony Stimulating Factor. Fights inflammation: Amino acids such as glycine, proline, and arginine all have anti-inflammatory effects. Promotes strong, healthy bones, Promotes healthy hair and nail growth.

IN THE NEWS: There is a saying in chiropractic that one should always use chiropractic 1st, drugs 2nd and surgery last. Here’s one reason to think about: Man wins $2.5M drug suit after growing 46DD breasts A 20-year-old autistic man won a $2.5 million lawsuit against a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson Tuesday after his family and doctor say he developed 46DD breasts after taking an antipsychotic drug, the Philadelphia Daily News reports. Austin Pledger, from Thorsby, Ala., was first prescribed Risperdal, manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, in 2002 when he was 8; at the time, the drug wasn’t FDA-approved for kids, and its label said risk was “low” for gynecomastia (the condition in which men’s breasts grow larger), Thomas Kline, one of Pledger’s attorneys, tells the Daily News. But when the FDA gave the green light in 2006 for the drug to be used as a schizophrenic aid for kids, new labels said the drug contained high levels of the hormone prolactin, which spurs breast growth, Kline adds. Pledger had started growing breasts by then—and now, the only way he can get rid of them is through a mastectomy, Kline says. A Janssen spokeswoman sent a statement to People noting the company is “disappointed” in the decision and that the drug’s side effects were clearly spelled out for Pledger’s family and prescribing physician.

FATIGUE  Many people suffer from fatigue and unfortunately rely on caffeine or refined carbohydrates to try to manage their fatigue. This is both dangerous and shortsighted. Dangerous because caffeine drinks have significant side effects particularly when they contain high levels of caffeine, which many energy drinks do. Also refined carbohydrates can lead to obesity and diabetes over time. Fatigue has a cause and the cause needs to be discovered and treated in order to resolve the fatigue. There are 3 things patients tell me once they get adjusted, that they feel more relaxed, they sleep better and they have more energy. So nerve pressure with resultant muscle tension can drain the body of energy. Maintaining good alignment can increase the expression of natural energy in your body and help maintain a clear mind in the process. Blood sugar deviations are another cause of fatigue and understanding your body type can lead you to a diet that can help regulate your sugar levels. The quality of sleep is also important as well as the number of hours which can range from 7 to 9 depending on your age. Managing stress is important in maintaining good sleep habits and both chiropractic adjustments and nutritional therapy can go a long ways of helping you manage stress. Of course anemia is another cause for fatigue and blood work can help identify if that’s an issue. Hormonal imbalances can definitely affect someone’s energy level and with Vega testing and nutritional therapy those issues can be resolved naturally. So if you or someone you know suffers from fatigue, tell them about chiropractic, tell them about Keefe Clinic.

IN THE NEWS: 7 tips for reducing hunger if you’re on a diet When you’re looking to shed a few extra pounds, do you really need to fight through hunger pains to know you’re losing weight? Lauren Blake, a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, agreed, and told Fox News that people shouldn’t restrict to the point that they’re always hungry. “There’s evidence that says when we restrict too much, it can be harmful to our metabolism, and it supports the loss of lean muscle mass,” she said.  1. Don’t skip breakfast. To regulate your hunger throughout the day, eat breakfast, whether that’s a bowl of cereal, some eggs, or even dinner leftovers, Planells said. 2. Keep healthy snacks on hand. To keep your blood sugar stable, avoid going four hours or more without eating, Planells said. Try snacks like yogurt, a handful of nuts, or even peanut butter and fruit to keep you full, he said. 3. Don’t drink your calories. Drinks deliver calories a lot faster than solids, Blake said. And since our guts sense fullness based on volume, not calories, drinks won’t leave us as satiated as solid foods, she explained. 4. Reach for whole, fiber-rich foods. Whole foods like fruits and vegetables are naturally lower in calories, and also have more water content and fiber that will keep you full longer, Blake said. Planells agreed: He noted that while the general American consumes about 10 grams of fiber per day, dietitians generally recommend Americans consume 25 to 30 grams per day. 5. Feature protein in your meals. Protein helps with satiety, Planells said. Try animal-based sources such as beef, chicken, pork, or fish, or plant-based sources like soy and quinoa, which have the added benefit of extra fiber, Planells said. 6. If you’re hungry late at night, drink a glass of water. Sometimes, we can mistake hunger for thirst. If you’re hungry late at night, try drinking a glass of water, Planells said. 7Do order an appetizer if you’re dining out. It might seem counterintuitive, but don’t skip the appetizer section of the menu if you’re dining out. Opt for a bone-based soup or a salad to help fill you up and reduce the risk of overeating during the main course, Blake said.

WELLNESS: How to Improve Your Failing Ability to Read Clearly as You Age, With the Help of Sunshine Nearsightedness is incredibly common, affecting an estimated 40 percent of Americans and up to 90 percent of young adults in Asian countries. A 2015 study estimated up to one-third of the world’s population may be nearsighted by the end of the decade — that’s 2.5 billion people. The following year, a meta-analysis of 145 studies predicted nearly half of the world will be nearsighted by the year 2050. One longstanding theory was that excessive reading at close distance (particularly in poor lighting) could lead to nearsightedness. Research refutes this theory, noting a clear lack of association between the two. Mounting research now shows the risk of nearsightedness is closely linked to time spent outdoors, both for children and adults. To protect your vision, you need regular exposure to bright sunlight. Nearsightedness (myopia), is a vision problem in which close objects appear clear but distant objects are blurry. This condition is thought to be caused by refractive errors in your eye. Refraction is the bending of light as it passes through one object to another. When light rays are refracted through your eye’s cornea and lens, they become focused on the retina, which then converts the light into messages sent through the optic nerve to your brain, which then interprets the messages into images. Refractive errors occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing properly on your retina. This can occur by changes in the shape of your eye, such as the length of your eyeball or shape of your cornea, and/or changes in your lens due to aging. But what exactly is responsible for these changes? Two studies, the first published in 20077 and the second in 2008, found that rates of nearsightedness in children appeared to be closely linked to the amount of time spent outdoors. The greater the number of hours spent playing outside, the lower the risk of nearsightedness. In other words, keeping kids indoors and/or instilling a fear of sun exposure (for skin cancer reasons) may be at the heart of the world’s growing myopia problem. Remarkably, according to a British survey, 75 percent of children in the U.K. spend less time outdoors than prison inmates!

CHIROPRACTIC: Reduction of Labor and Delivery Time Due to Chiropractic Care The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on April 3, 2017, documenting the case of a woman who experienced a shorter and easier birth due to chiropractic care. This improvement was compared to her first pregnancy and delivery where she did not receive any chiropractic care. The study begins by noting that chiropractic care has been involved in the care of pregnant women since the early days of the profession over a century ago. In this study, a 28-year-old woman went to the chiropractor for evaluation and possible care. She sought chiropractic for a pain in her tailbone area as well as for wellness care. The woman believed that her pelvis had shifted due to her first pregnancy. She reported that after the delivery of her firstborn, she experienced pain and discomfort at her tailbone any time she sat on a hard surface. The woman reported that her first pregnancy went well, but that her delivery was very long and difficult. This was one of the factors in her desire to receive chiropractic care in anticipation of her second pregnancy. Her history revealed that between the ages of eight and sixteen, she was a competitive gymnast and was receiving chiropractic intermittently during that time. She also noted that she did not receive any chiropractic care during her first pregnancy. Prior to her first pregnancy, she did not have tailbone pain. She later attributed her long and difficult labor and delivery as being the cause of the tailbone pain. As with her first birth, the woman decided to have her second child at home. She was supervised by the same Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) that attended her first home birth. According to the midwife, the woman’s first labor and delivery time combined was 32 hours and 25 minutes. After chiropractic care, the midwife reported that the woman’s labor and delivery times for her second child was only two hours and 45 minutes combined. In their conclusion, the study authors note that chiropractic care during pregnancy is far more valuable than just symptomatic relief of musculoskeletal pains, and should be considered for the overall wellness and process of pregnancy. They stated, “This case report provides supporting evidence that subluxation centered chiropractic care on pregnant patients can have beneficial effects on the birthing process.”

IN THE NEWS: Reduce your lung cancer risk with these 5 tips, other than not smoking How much lung cancer is actually attributable to cigarettes? It turns out, quite a bit: About 85 percent of lung cancer patients are smokers or former smokers, Dr. Mohammad Jahanzeb, a lung cancer expert at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, told Fox News. To learn the best ways to reduce your risk of non-smoker’s lung cancer, Fox News spoke to Jahanzeb and Dr. Normal Edelman, a senior scientific advisor at the American Lung Association, for their tips on reducing the risk of lung cancer: 1. Stay away from secondhand smoke. Both Jahanzeb and Edelman advised staying away from smokers to limit exposure to dangerous cigarette smoke. 2. Don’t switch to a potentially harmful cigarette substitute.3. Be aware of occupational risks — and take care to avoid them. Be aware if you’re in an occupation that exposes you to certain risk factors for lung cancer, Edeman advised, and make sure to follow all safety protocols. For instance, asbestos can sometimes contribute to lung cancer — and while it’s now banned in the United States, those in construction who are tearing down old buildings may be at risk of some exposure. 4. Get screened early. Those who have smoked for a long time, such as 20 years, should go in for regular CT scans, Jahanzeb said. 5. Practice healthy habits.

WELLNESS: Depression Is Now No. 1 Cause of Illness and Disability Worldwide Depression is now the leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide, affecting an estimated 322 million people, including more than 16 million Americans.. Depression increased by 18 percent in the decade between 2005 and 2015, now costing the global economy at least $1 trillion annually. Suicide rates in the U.S. have also steadily risen since 2000, primarily in more rural areas, a trend blamed on the effects of social isolation, economic pressures, opioid addiction and limited access to mental health care. Addressing your nutrition is perhaps the best place to start if you’re feeling depressed. Foods have an immense impact on your brain, and eating whole foods will best support your mental and physical health. Avoiding processed foods, sugar (particularly fructose) and grains is particularly important as it will help normalize your insulin and leptin levels, which is an important contributing factor to depression. Other factors can be lack of Exercise. Sleep, Excess EMF exposure. Studies have also linked excessive exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMFs) to an increased risk of both depression and suicide. Powerlines and high-voltage cables appear to be particularly troublesome. Spending time outdoors has been shown to dramatically improve people’s mood and significantly reduce symptoms of depression. And proper handling of stress can be a big factor.
