Drier air causes sinuses to dry and crack, making people more susceptible to winter colds and flu viruses. In fact, this change from higher outside relative humidity to lower indoor relative humidity in the winter is a significant contributing factor in the spread of colds and flus. By maintaining the proper level of humidity indoors, you reduce illness in the winter. Studies have shown that the body’s immune system will function better when the relative humidity in a home is between 45%-65%.

Pneumococcus, staphylococcus, and streptococcus bacteria die up to 20 times faster at a relative humidity between 45% and 55%, than above 70% or below 20%. Dehydration can also cause negative health effects. To rinse your sinuses, use a neti pot, a small teapot-like device sold at most natural food stores. Combine three parts non-iodized salt and one part baking soda, and add 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture to 1/2 cup of warm water in the pot. This solution matches your body’s salinity, and baking soda makes it less irritating to your sinuses.

Lean over a sink and insert the spout of the pot into your left nostril. Tilt your head and the pot to the right and let the solution flow out your right nostril. Exhale forcefully through both nostrils and repeat on the other side. Repeat as needed.

IN THE NEWS: What Are Poppy Seeds Good For? The poppy plant (Papaver somniferum) is infamous for numerous reasons; one of them being that it is the source of opium, a highly addictive narcotic. But despite its notoriety, the poppy plant is also the source of one of the most loved pastry ingredients in the world: poppy seeds. They are well-known for adding a crunch to various confections and desserts. Poppy seed oil, which can be used as both a culinary and a medicinal oil, can be extracted from them as well. CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC: EMOTIONAL  WELL BEING AND BEATING ADDICTIONS  A few years ago, Dr. J.M. Holder researched effects of auricular therapy (a form of acupuncture stimulation to the ear – a technique we have used here at Keefe Clinic since 1980). You may have read about that study in the papers then – it indicated that auricular therapy was the most effective therapy for drug addictions of the 178 government-approved therapies at that time! This study was released in the early 1990’s and has started to revolutionize drug addiction programs across the country. Now to his next study: Dr. Holder reasoned that the effects demonstrated in the first study described above dealing with problems with the limbic system could be tied in to the effects that subluxations have on the nervous system. He knew that the limbic system is not just a compartment hidden in the center of the brain, but it also extends down the “dorsal horn” of the spinal column. He decided to test to see what Chiropractic adjustment intervention could do with this particular system of the nervous system. This is what is called the “brain reward cascade” is a scientific model that has the vertebral motor unit as its common denominator which provides an understanding to the neurophysiological mechanism on how the meso-Limbic system expresses a state of well-being. Therefore, a subluxation-free spine is mandatory to express one’s greatest potential. At the end of that study, the results were astonishing, even to Dr. Holder. After compiling all the data, he found that the combination of Chiropractic adjustments with counseling therapy approach to addiction and compulsive disorders produced far better results than any other test results for any other government-approved technique now available. His conclusion: for the 180 different addiction disorder techniques that have been tested, Chiropractic now proves to be the most effective, even more effective than the use of auricular therapy found previously so helpful. This means that: Chiropractic care, coupled with proper nutrition, electro-stimulation of points in the ear, and counseling is the best help currently available for individuals who have addictive-compulsive disorders.

IN THE NEWS: Dirt Don’t Hurt When it comes to keeping your children healthy, most parents are cautious, if not hypervigilant, over-sterilizing their environments so their children never get dirty and overusing antibacterial soaps. In years past, parents served (and the kids ate) fermented foods containing good bacteria and allowed them to get dirty outside and play with animals on a regular basis, a stark contrast to many kids today. Soil-based organisms (SBOs) may help to stimulate your immune system, reduce inflammation and aid in detoxification. In 2012, the National Institutes of Health’s Human Microbiome Project, five years in the making, concluded that humans are essentially superorganisms with microbes that outnumber our own cells 10 to 1. These studies, along with epidemiological observations, seem to explain why immune system disorders like multiple sclerosis, Type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and allergies have risen significantly in the United States and other developed countries.

WELLNESS: Study Reveals Previously Unknown Mechanism Behind Acupuncture’s Ability to Reduce Pain Research suggests acupuncture can be an effective treatment for pain. Clear and robust effects have been found in the treatment of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, and headaches. Car accidents are most likely the number one cause for chronic disability and/or pain. The August 1999 issue of American Family Physicians, the article notes that  3.5 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. Even minor car accidents can cause changes in the spine that can lead to degenerating joint disease and future pain.  Studies indicate that chiropractic care is the best treatment for the vast majority of injuries from a car accident.  The main reason that chiropractic patients have less problems in the future and recover better from their present complaints is because of the focus in chiropractic care.

The injuries to the spine will cause slight misalignments in the joints of the neck and back.  It’s these misalignments that produce the majority of symptoms, not pulled muscles.  Chiropractic care and analysis focuses on the detection and correction of spinal subluxations.  Subluxation is the term for misalignments that develop in the spine.  These misalignments can stay there for years unless they are corrected by chiropractic adjustments.  The average patient after a car accident that visit an emergency room usually are only given pain pills and muscle relaxers.  This of course allows the misalignments to remain.  It’s this focus on just the symptoms of the injury that leave a high percent of car accident victims with ongoing disability, pain and degenerating joint disease.

Twenty one unselected patients with an acute whiplash injury of the neck had neurological and neuropsychological assessment, cervical x rays, EEG, BAEP, MRI, and an otoneurological examination within two weeks of the injury. Subjectively, 13 patients reported concentration deficits, 18 reported sleep disturbances, 9 had symptoms of depression, and 7 female patients told of menstrual irregularities.   Scientific Automobile Accident Reconstruction treatise by Barzeley; Published by Mathew Bender 1984; Chapter 46:

”              The simple fact remains: neck injuries do occur as a result of rear-end automobile accidents.  46-2

In most cases you’re better off in the long-term to break a bone than to damage a joint.  When you damage a joint, you primarily damage the connective tissue in the joint which can leave that joint unstable for the rest of your life.  When you break a bone, the bone heals stronger than it was before.  Connective tissue has a history of poor healing.  By bringing that joint back to its proper alignment, you allow the maximum healing to the  soft tissue or connective tissue in that joint.  And by maintaining that alignment over the long-term, you assure maximum results. We’re all aware of the serious problem in the US with opiate addiction. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 115 Americans die from opiate overdoses each day (about 43,000 a year), and we spend about $78 billion on the total costs of opiate abuse. Opioid addiction is crippling our economy and many communities.

Many people who become addicted to opiates are first introduced to them by doctors who prescribe them for chronic pain. A recent study in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that 60% of opioid overdoses first used these drugs when given a prescription for chronic, non-cancer pain: 59% of those patients were prescribed painkillers for chronic back pain and 24% were for chronic headache.

In summary: 36% of people who died from opioid overdoses were first given a narcotic because they had back pain.

Chiropractic: Working with the Root Cause of Pain

Chiropractic takes a different approach to pain by working to help the body repair the root cause of the problem rather than simply masking the symptoms, like opiates do. Remember: painkillers don’t repair injuries or damaged tissue; they simply stop the brain from processing pain, leaving the underlying problem. If the problem isn’t treated and the normal function isn’t restored to the body, the pain will return.

Numerous studies have found that chiropractic care is equally (or even more) effective than medical care for a variety of pain conditions, including back pain, sciatica, headache, and scoliosis. And since chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs or perform surgery, patients who get adjustments don’t have to worry about the negative side effects that come with these treatments…including addiction.

Even the American Medical Association has acknowledged that chiropractic adjustments should be a course of treatment before surgery is considered for back pain.

The US Department of Veterans Affairs has also seen the benefits of chiropractic care in the treatment of pain and, over the last few years, dramatically increased the utilization of chiropractic for veterans.

Chiropractic Patients Use Fewer Opiates

Now a new study1 from the VA looked at the relationship between chiropractic care and opioid consumption in returning veterans. In this study, the researchers looked at the health records of 14,000 individuals who had received at least one chiropractic adjustment. The authors found:

  • One third of these patients were prescribed an opioid within six months of their chiropractic visit.
  • Patients were more likely to be prescribed an opiate if they had moderate to severe pain.
  • They were also more likely to receive an opiate if they had PTSD or depression.
  • The chiropractic patients, though, had a significantly lower usage of opiates after their chiropractic visits compared to non-chiropractic patients.

The percentage of veterans receiving opioid prescriptions was lower in each of the three 30-day time frames assessed after the index chiropractic visit than before. Our work did not attempt to assess causation or otherwise explain this observation. Veterans may have been referred to chiropractic care as part of an opioid taper plan, or those who agreed to chiropractic care may have been inherently less likely to seek opioid prescriptions. However, it is also possible that the delivery of chiropractic care may have been a substitute for opioid use in our sample, which raises interesting research, policy, and practice considerations as the VA continues to expand chiropractic services. This is particularly relevant in light of other work that has shown a negative correlation between chiropractic use and opioid use in private sector populations.”

This is not the first study to show that chiropractic patients are less likely to use opiates.

  • A 2016 study2 found that in areas where there are more chiropractors per capita, younger, disabled Medicare beneficiaries were less likely to obtain an opioid prescription.
  • Another 2018 study3 found that chiropractic patients had a 55% lower chance of using opioids than did medical patients.

It’s clear from our public health crisis that we need healthy, non-addictive solutions to chronic pain in the United States. Many people with pain are prescribed opiates when there are solutions that are just as effective and safer than drugs. According to the literature, it seems that chiropractic can play an important role in helping these patients.

DIET: Kidney stones can be avoided by drinking lemonade  The pain of passing a kidney stone has been described as on par with natural childbirth. However, urologists are increasingly prescribing an accessible natural remedy for kidney stones: lemonade. Citric acid-rich lemon juice in the form of lemonade has proven highly effective in preventing kidney stones or slowing their formation substantially. Medical professionals like Roger L. Sur, MD, director of UC San Diego Comprehensive Kidney Stone Center and Steven Y. Nakada, chair and professor of urology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison advocate lemonade therapy as an alternative to taking medications or supplements for the painful condition. FUNNY BONE: A mother took her little boy to church. While in church the little boy said, “Mommy, I have to pee.” The mother said to the little boy, “It’s not appropriate to say the word ‘pee’ in church. IN THE NEWS: Help Preserve Your Eyesight With B Vitamins A study published in the July 2013 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition adds to the evidence suggesting certain B vitamins may be important in the prevention of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is the leading cause of vision loss in people over 55 years of age in the U.S. and Canada. Previous studies have shown that taking certain antioxidant vitamins and minerals as supplements (vitamin E, vitamin C, beta-carotene, selenium and zinc), at specific dosages, can slow the progression of AMD. What the Latest Study Says In the latest study, known as the Blue Mountain Eye Study, serum folate (B-vitamin folic acid), vitamin B12 and homocysteine status were determined from blood samples drawn in 1997-1999 from cohort members ages 55 and older. AMD was assessed in 1,760 survivors from retinal photographs taken in 2002-2004 and 2007-2009. Results showed that higher blood levels of homocysteine were associated with a significant increased risk of developing AMD, whereas higher levels of vitamin B12 were strongly associated with decreased risk of developing AMD. Homocysteine is a toxic end-product of metabolism known to damage blood vessels and increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. How You Can Prevent AMD It is thought that AMD is a highly preventable disease, thus requiring attention to various lifestyle behaviors. Extrapolating from what we know from experimental, observational and clinical studies, the following practices appear to be the best proactive strategies to prevent the development of AMD:Don’t smoke-Protect your eyes from UV light-Prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes by maintaining your ideal weight, performing endurance and strength-training exercises regularly, and keeping your blood sugar levels within an ideal range (talk to your doctor to for more info)-Eat a diet rich in brightly colored vegetables and fruit (dark green, yellow, orange, blue, purple, red).-Take dosages of antioxidants and B vitamins:Vitamin C: 1,000 mg-Vitamin E: 400 IU-Selenium: 200 mcg-Zinc: Vit A 25,000 IU -Lutein powder: 6 mg-B-50 complex, including 400 mcg folic acid, 50 mcg vitamin B12 and 50 mg vitamin B6(which also lowers homocysteine) If you’re already suffering from advanced macular degeneration, higher dosages of certain vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients are required to slow the progression of the disease.

WELLNESS: Poor Sleep Is Bad for Your Waistline If you think you’re getting a good night’s sleep on a regular basis, you’re either fooling yourself or in an extremely small minority. That’s because increasingly, people are tossing and turning, waking up repeatedly, going to bed late and waking up early, or just plain waking up feeling tired, unrefreshed and unready to take on the next day because of a poor night’s sleep. There are short- and long-term consequences of poor sleep, ranging from irritability and concentration lapses (short term) to cardiovascular disease (long term), but your weight and waistline also may suffer, according to research published in PLoS One, the peer-reviewed journal of the Public Library of Science. In a recent study, adults were divided into three groups based on their average sleep duration: Less than six hours nightly (5.88 hours), more than seven hours (7.26 hours), and more than eight hours (8.44 hours). If you got the most average sleep per night, your body-mass index (BMI) was about two points lower than if you got the least average sleep per night. Getting the most sleep, compared to the least, also corresponded with 1.6 inch smaller waistline, on average, compared to getting the least sleep. CHIROPRACTIC: Knee Osteoarthritis: Steroid Injections Aren’t the Answer Knee osteoarthritis can be painful and limit your activities, but corticosteroid injections aren’t the answer, according to new research published in the May 16, 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. In the study, quarterly steroid injections actually increased cartilage loss over a two-year period without providing any benefit. That’s a loss-loss situation if you ask us. Patients suffering from knee osteoarthritis with synovitis were divided into two groups, with one group receiving the corticosteroid injections every 12 weeks for two years and a second group receiving a placebo (saline injections) at the same frequency and over the same time frame. Patients in the steroid group lost an average of 0.21 mm in cartilage thickness over the two-year period compared with only 0.10 mm, on average, in patients not receiving corticosteroids. What’s more, patients receiving steroid injections scored only 1.2 points lower on a 0-20 pain scale (0 = no pain, 20 = extreme pain), while patients not receiving steroid treatment scored 1.9 points lower following the intervention period. In other words, patients who received no steroids reported less pain at three-month follow-ups than patients who received steroids! Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the world, which makes finding effective treatment options paramount. Unfortunately (and as we’ve said repeatedly with other scenarios), drugs – in this case, injections – may not be the answer. If you suffer from osteoarthritis, talk to your doctor about nondrug alternatives to manage your pain and reduce other symptoms. IN THE NEWS: Depressed and Anxious Patients Receive More Than Half of All Opioid Prescriptions  In 2014, 1.2 million Americans ended up in the emergency room with an opioid-related side effect; in 2015, 33,000 died from an opioid-associated drug overdose. Adults with depression and anxiety receive 51 percent of all opioid prescriptions in the U.S.; 19 percent of the 38.6 million Americans diagnosed with a mental health disorder use opioids, compared to 5 percent of the general population. Women are being prescribed opioids during pregnancy and after delivery, creating drug dependent mothers and infants; 23 percent of 1.1 million pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid filled a prescription for an opioid in 2007. Well over 65,000 die from opioid abuse last year compare that to 58,000 that died in the Vietnam War. When it comes to pain control our healthcare system is broken. WELLNESS: Apple Cider Vinegar As you may know, apples, and especially apple juice, are high in sugar and are not something I recommend eating regularly as it will typically shift you out of fat-burning if frequently eaten. However, when you ferment apple juice or cider, the sugars are digested as a result of the fermentation process. Apple cider vinegar contains very little sugar and carbohydrate, making it a very attractive food from a dietary standpoint. But it’s actually economic.@@The IRS returned my tax return to me this year after I apparently answered one of the questions incorrectly… In response to the question, “do you have anyone dependent on you?” I wrote, “9.5 million illegal immigrants, 1.1 million crackheads, 3.4 million unemployable scoundrels, 80,000 criminals in over 85 prisons plus 650 idiots in Washington.” The IRS stated the answer I gave was “unacceptable!” I then wrote back “Who did I leave out??”@@Wi-Fi went down for five minutes, so I had to talk to my family. They seem like nice people.

IN THE NEWS: Doctors should not prescribe antibiotics for most people with sore throats. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence said most sore throats were caused by viral infections, which cannot be treated by antibiotics. But research suggests antibiotics are prescribed in 60% of sore throat cases. NICE said it was “vital” the medicines were only used when effective because of the rise of antibiotic resistance. The overuse of antibiotics is making infections harder to treat by creating drug-resistant superbugs. Patients ‘need rest, not antibiotics’ Why is it so difficult to discover new antibiotics? “For a sore throat, evidence shows that antibiotics make little difference to length or severity of illness, unless symptoms are much more severe. While a sore throat can be painful, there are other ways to control the symptoms”. ‘Post-antibiotic apocalypse’ England’s chief medical officer, Dame Prof Sally Davies, has previously warned of a “post-antibiotic apocalypse” where infections would become harder to treat and common medical procedures such as cancer treatments could become too risky. In an ever growing number of cases people have died from bugs that are resistant to all antibiotics. In October, PHE said patients had “a part to play” in stopping the rise of infections and that more of them should be told to go home and rest rather than be given antibiotics. NOTE: This last statement kind of makes my blood boil, even though as patients you have to look after your own health doctors should know better. Patients didn’t go to school to learn to be a doctor, doctors did that. For the past 30 years this is been in the literature and still we have 60% of sore throats receiving antibiotics, another good reason to make your primary care physician a chiropractic physician.

WELLNESS: Sitting all day is as bad as smoking for your health Research shows that the more time you spend sitting, the shorter and less healthy your life will tend to be, even if you exercise regularly, thanks to the negative impacts on your cardiovascular and metabolic function. When you sit, lack of muscle contraction decreases blood flow through your body, reducing the efficiency of biological processes. For every hour you sit, your life expectancy decreases by two hours. Research has also found that sitting for more than three hours a day causes 3.8 percent of all-cause deaths. Twenty to 25 minutes of walking per day may add anywhere from three to seven years to your life span. As little as two hours of walking per week may also reduce mortality risk in older adults. Brisk walking has even been shown to improve life expectancy in smokers and overweight individuals. Research shows that within 90 seconds of standing up after sitting for a long period of time, the muscular and cellular systems that process blood sugar, triglycerides and cholesterol are activated. In other words, as soon as you stand up, a series of molecular mechanisms are triggered that beneficially impact the cellular functioning of your muscles and push fuel into your cells. Misalignment of the bones that make up the shoulder can be a common cause for pain and discomfort even limited movement of the shoulder. IN THE NEWS: Painkiller addiction: the plague that is sweeping the US Pain is the number one reason that people visit a doctor. What most people don’t realize is in most cases doctors are at complete loss on how to address the condition that’s causing the pain. If there’s nothing they can cut out or an infection they can treat with antibiotics then pain pills are there primary choice. This lack of proper training is devastating to our country. Simply writing a prescription and not dealing with the root cause is leading to close to 200,000 deaths per year for all types of drugs. WELLNESS: FOODS FOR PAIN Ginger A staple of traditional medicine, this pungent root is probably best known for its anti-nausea, stomach-soothing properties. But ginger can also fight pain, including achy muscles from exercise as well as menstrual cramps. One study found ginger capsules worked as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen at relieving period pain. Blueberries These little juicy gems have lots of phytonutrients that may fight inflammation and lessen pain. If it’s not berry season, frozen blueberries can have the same or even more nutrients than fresh. Other fruits with antioxidants and polyphenols, including strawberries and oranges, can have a similar soothing effect. Pumpkin Seeds Pepitas are a terrific source of magnesium, a mineral that may cut the number of migraines you get. It may also help prevent and treat osteoporosis. But despite what you may have heard, it doesn’t seem to stop leg cramps at night. For more magnesium, add almonds and cashews, dark green leafy vegetables (like spinach and kale), beans, and lentils to your diet. It’s considered heart-healthy and may relieve joint tenderness if you have rheumatoid arthritis. Other varieties of cold-water fish, including tuna, sardines, and mackerel, are good choices, too. Avoid tilapia and catfish, though: Their higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids may promote inflammation. Turmeric The compound in the spice that gives curry its bright orange-yellow color can affect several processes in your body, including inflammation. Studies of people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis who took supplements of curcumin found they could walk better and without the side effects of taking drugs. Black pepper can help your body absorb it, so try a blend of the spices, steeped with ginger and honey into a tea. Tart Cherries In one study, runners who drank tart cherry juice starting 7 days before a race and on race day (12 ounces, twice daily) had significantly less muscle pain than a group who swigged a similar-tasting beverage with no natural juice. It could be from the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in the fruit. Chili Peppers Capsaicin, the stuff that gives chilies their heat, is well known for its painkilling properties in creams and patches. Some early research suggests that eating hot peppers, instead of putting them on your skin, may reduce and prevent inflammation, too. The “burn” also tricks your brain into releasing endorphins, which block pain signals. Mint Peppermint oil relieves the painful cramps, gas, and bloating that are the hallmarks of irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint tea is a good soother for occasional tummy upset. In early research, Brazilian mint tea (made from the plant Hyptnis crenata) has been as effective as a prescription painkiller.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Chiropractic and pain  There are different types of pain including chronic pain, nerve pain, psychogenic pain, musculoskeletal pain, abdominal pain, complex regional pain syndrome etc. so pain has to be addressed at the source and so it’s important to understand what’s causing the pain. What tends to distinguish a dark beer from a light brew, or a ruby-hued wine from a white one, is their concentrations of quercetin, rutin, resveratrol, and other flavonoid pigments.

In their new study, the Wisconsin scientists initially recruited five healthy men and women (including Folts) to drink about three servings of purple grape juice at a sitting — some 20 to 24 ounces. An hour later, the researchers sampled the volunteers’ blood and put it into a device that measures platelet stickiness. Compared to blood samples taken an hour prior to drinking the juice, the later blood was almost 50 percent less prone to platelet clumping.

That’s a lot of juice, Folts acknowledges, so he decided to explore what would happen if he halved the dose and drank it daily for a week. Two or 3 days after the last glass was drunk, each volunteer returned for another blood test.

The results, reported this week, indicate that regular consumption of the popular juice appears to have a carryover effect. Even after a hiatus of several days, the volunteers’ blood was about 25 percent less likely to clump than before the treatment began.

His group’s data now suggest that even if the juice had been drunk the day before, it would still confer some protection.

Unlike aspirin

For nearly a decade, cardiologists have known that healthy men over 50 — and postmenopausal women — can nearly halve their risk of heart attack by taking an aspirin every other day. Like grape juice, this drug appears to work by inhibiting platelet aggregation.

However, when adrenaline is pumped into the blood in response to stress or heavy exercise, Folts points out, aspirin’s platelet inhibition virtually disappears. So in the new study, he tested grape juice drinkers’ blood to see if the same thing happened to them.

In one case, he took the volunteers’ blood, added adrenaline to it, and then measured its susceptibility to platelet clumping. In another, some volunteers exercised and then provided blood for analysis. In both cases, Folts says, the juice depressed platelet clumping.

In the late seventies however, we discovered that if we raised the adrenaline or epinephrine, that the same thing, 75% -80% of the time clot formation comes back with aspirin and that’s a serious problem. That’s why we have spent the last 20 years looking for drugs and food substances that would inhibit the platelets and prevent the clot formation, but also, prevent the renewal of clot formation from elevated epinephrine.

Now, in our previous findings with the animal model, we have shown that red wine, moderate amounts equivalent to 2 glasses in you or I, purple grape juice; not the clear or white grape juice, tea, but not coffee, in this animal model reduced or inhibited platelet mediated clot formation and protected against potentially fatal coronary thrombosis. These flavonoids in red wine, purple grape juice and tea inhibit platelets about the same as aspirin but they have one unique feature. THEY PROTECT AGAINST ELEVATIONS OF ADRENALINE, WHICH ASPIRIN DOES NOT. That makes the flavonoids more desirable.

WELLNESS: Oil of oregano fights harmful bacteria, cancer  A new report out of the University of Arizona (UofA) says that oil of oregano is a powerful nutrient for fighting harmful bacteria and preventing cancer. Sadhana Ravishankar, a food microbiologist at UofA, discovered that carvacrol, a phenol of oregano oil, exhibits powerful antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, not only when consumed but also when applied to foods. Published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, the findings have immense implications for food safety, as oregano oil could be applied to various food preparations to ward off the formation of dangerous microbes and other contaminants that threaten human health. Rather than resort to irradiation, chemicals or other unnatural interventions, oregano oil just might be a viable, natural alternative.

CHIROPRACTIC:  AUTISM AND CHIROPRACTIC A recent case study reported in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research suggests that chiropractic adjustments can help reverse and prevent autism and issues related to the autism spectrum. The patient was an adopted three-year-old girl who was born at 28 weeks weighing 2 pounds, 5 ounces by a woman who had a history of prior drug abuse. After two years of abnormal behavior and receiving multiple “autism” diagnoses from medical doctors, her parents decided to take her in for a thorough developmental evaluation. Five critical items were failed: social/emotional, communication, cognitive, adaptive/self-help and sensory. Subluxation-based specific chiropractic care was performed on the patient, which resulted in complete resolution of her headaches, acid reflux, vomiting and sleeplessness within one month. Significant improvements in autism-related issues were also noted, including calm behavior, increased eye contact, happier demeanor, improved attitude, increased focus and attention, and an initiation to sound out words. The study reports that the girl continues to progress as evidenced by a significantly increased vocabulary, continued improvement in attention and focus, and complete lack of epileptic episodes.

This study indicated that when you have low pain in the sacroiliac joint area or swelling it is usually do to misalignments. Sometimes just an independent inflammatory condition can be related to symptoms in this area but it is 20 to 100 times more likely to be due to a misalignment.

The authors cite one study which indicated that the SIJ rotates 7 to 8 degrees on average in the sagittal plane and up to a maximum of 17 degrees.

They also indicate that movement of the posterior superior spine of the illium relative to the sacrum ranges from 4 to 8mm.

Part of the challenge that any doctor has is trying to understand and to help a patient with a certain condition. In chiropractic and natural healthcare we take a totally different approach in treating our patients. Instead of using drugs that just suppress symptoms, at a cost of sometimes serious side effects, chiropractors try to focus on the underlying cause.

As a patient you might think that in healthcare there is a understanding of the cause for most disease, but you would be wrong. In our society most diseases are just suppressed not corrected. In natural healthcare and chiropractic we don’t use suppressive drugs so we must try to understand the root cause in order to help the patient get well.

So what do we do if the cause is not generally recognized or understood? That’s where we have to break the code of disease to try to get to the root cause. There are a number of diseases that most doctors would say we don’t understand the cause yet chiropractic helps on a regular basis. To give you an example let’s look at acid reflux which is a major problem in our society. The predominant approach is just to suppress acid production but of course this does not address the cause or offer a solution for the problem. In natural healthcare we understand the complexities of the digestive system and how it’s impacted through the hormonal system, through emotions, through toxicity etc. so instead of writing a prescription that might turn off your acid production and thus compromise normal digestion, we have to unravel the cause in each patient’s special circumstances. Besides standard tools like lab work, x-ray or physical exam we utilize a biofeedback technique that we call “Vega testing”. This allows us, in many cases, to unravel the underlying cause of a given condition for each patient. For instance let’s talk about chronic fatigue syndrome it’s been my experience that what works for one patient doesn’t necessarily work for the next. But with the understanding the body can heal itself and working with the body’s intelligence we can usually unravel the hidden code for a particular condition.

We have discovered that not only can you be deficient in certain nutrients you can also be deficient in certain vibratory rates like sound or light (color). Let me give you an example: back in the 80s the diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome was first presented. Even today the consensus is that we don’t understand what causes chronic fatigue syndrome. There’s more than enough theories on the cause but there is no definitive cause presented. Yet we have gotten very good results by taking each patient as an individual and unraveling the code of their particular condition by investigation of electrical/chemical/mechanical systems and addressing the faults we find in each.

Crohn’s is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that is associated with inflammation of the lining of your digestive tract, which can lead to flare-ups. The most common location for Crohn’s disease inflammation is the last portion of the small intestine, at the junction where it joins the large intestine, but Crohn’s can involve any portion of the intestinal tract.

Inflammation caused by Crohn’s disease can involve different areas of the digestive tract in different people. Crohn’s disease also increases the risk of blood clots; painful swelling of the lower legs can be a sign of deep venous thrombosis, while difficulty breathing may be a result of pulmonary embolismAutoimmune hemolytic anemia, a condition in which the immune system attacks the red blood cells, is also more common in Crohn’s disease and may cause fatigue, a pale appearance, and other symptoms common in anemiaClubbing, a deformity of the ends of the fingers, may also be a result of Crohn’s disease. Finally, Crohn’s disease increases the risk of osteoporosis, or thinning of the bones. Individuals with osteoporosis are at increased risk of bone fractures.

People with Crohn’s often also have issues with small bowel bacterial overgrowth syndrome, which has similar symptoms.

The diagnosis of Crohn’s disease can sometimes be challenging, and a number of tests are often required to assist the physician in making the diagnosis. Even with a full battery of tests, it may not be possible to diagnose Crohn’s with complete certainty.

DIET FOR INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE

The fact is, there is no scientifically proven diet for inflammatory bowel disease. Most experts believe, though, that some patients can identify specific foods that trigger their gastrointestinal symptoms, particularly during disease flares. By avoiding your “trigger foods,” you may find that your GI symptoms of gas, bloatingabdominal pain, cramping, and diarrhea are more manageable. At the same time, you will give your inflamed intestines time to heal.

It’s possible that at least some of these listed foods will trigger your symptoms:

carbonated beverages

coffee, tea, chocolate

corn husks

Gastroenterologists have long known about the many complications and impacts of living with IBD. For example: If you have Crohn’s disease, your life expectancy is two to three years less than someone without the disease.  People with IBD have an increased chance of developing colorectal cancer, correlating with the length of time they have had the disease. The probability of a person developing colorectal cancer after having IBD for 10 years is two per cent. After that, risk continues to rise and is as high as 18 per cent after 30 years. Side effects of the various IBD medications range from decreased fertility to an increased risk of lymphatic cancer. Women who have had surgery for their IBD may not be able to conceive. Due to the diseased intestinal tract’s failure to absorb nutrients, children with Crohn’s disease are usually smaller than their peers, which can have an impact on their social lives. One of the side effects of Crohn’s disease is mouth ulcers, which are painful and make it difficult to smile.

CHIROPRACTIC

Multiple cross-sectional surveys have revealed that 51 percent of patients with inflammatory bowel disease use complementary medicine for treating their illness. These studies indicate an increase in people seeking out alternative treatment methods.

A 2007 study on Crohn’s disease patients found that 12 of the 17 participants who received spinal adjustments “showed long-term and stable remission of their symptoms.” They also found “that vertebral subluxation is a common and characteristic finding in patients with allergies and Crohn’s disease.”

A 2003 case study by Dr. Charles L. Blum, reports a 32-year-old female patient suffering from inflammatory bowel disease was relieved of this chronic condition following chiropractic treatment.

 Probiotics

Your gastrointestinal tract contains “good” bacteria, which help with digestion and offer protection against “bad” bacteria. If you have taken antibiotics or have an illness, you may not have a sufficient supply of the good bacteria. Probiotics are living microorganisms that you can consume. They act very much like the good bacteria in your gut.

Probiotics have not been proven to reduce the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and further study is needed. They may be more or less beneficial depending on the location and stage of the disease. Some strains might work for one person but not others. If you decide to try probiotics, talk to your doctor first, and try to find a product that is free of dairy because many people with Crohn’s disease are sensitive to dairy products.

 Prebiotics

Prebiotics are nondigestible carbohydrates found in artichokes, honey, whole grains, bananas, onions, and garlic. They are food for probiotics and for intestinal bacteria. Adding prebiotics to your diet might improve the function of your normal intestinal bacteria. Using prebiotics along with probiotics might make the probiotics more effective.

Fish Oil

Fish oil has long been used to promote cholesterol health, but its benefits to Crohn’s patients have also been suggested. According to a medical journal article in the Cochrane Database of System Reviews, omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish oil, have anti-inflammatory properties. Since Crohn’s disease is a chronic inflammatory condition, a diet rich in omega-3s or omega-3 supplementation may reduce symptoms. According to a small study published in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM),  patients taking fish oil were twice as likely to remain in remission as those who took a placebo. (NEJM,1996). Talk to your doctor before starting fish oil supplementation. Taking high doses of fish oil, or taking it in combination with blood thinning medication, can lead to bleeding problems.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture uses thin needles inserted into special points on your body.  It is believed that this stimulates your brain to release endorphins. Endorphins are chemicals that block pain. They may also strengthen your immune system and help fight infection.

Biofeedback

Biofeedback is a form of relaxation therapy. With the help of a machine that monitors your body temperature, perspiration level, blood flow, and brain waves, you are able to see how your body responds to pain and learn to control these responses. Over time, you can learn to manage your muscle contractions and pain.

IN THE NEWS: Few US adults meet fruit, vegetable intake guidelines Less than 15 percent of U.S. adults eat enough fruits daily to meet federal recommendations, but the numbers are even worse in some states, dipping as low as 7.5 percent in Tennessee, according to a new study. Even fewer adults eat enough vegetables to meet recommendations, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) researchers found. Overall, in 2013, half of respondents consumed fruit less than once per day and vegetables less than 1.7 times per day. Fruit consumption was lowest in Tennessee, with about seven percent of people meeting the recommendation, and highest in California, with 17.7 percent meeting the recommendation, Moore’s team writes in CDC Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The proportion of Americans meeting vegetable recommendations ranged from 5.5 percent in Mississippi to 13 percent in California.

WELLNESS: Magnetic pulses may ease ringing in the ears People with tinnitus – a ringing or other “phantom” sounds in their ears – may benefit from a treatment that sends electromagnetic pulses into the brain, suggests a new study. Transcranial magnetic simulation (TMS) is not currently available for the average person with tinnitus, but the study’s lead author hopes it will someday be used along with existing therapies like hearing aids and symptom management strategies. For the new study of 64 people with significant ringing in their ears, the researchers randomly assigned half the participants to receive 2,000 TMS pulses during sessions over 10 consecutive business days. The other half of the participants received sham TMS. The sessions lasted approximately 35 minutes each. Overall, 56 percent of participants receiving TMS improved by the end of the 10 sessions, compared to 22 percent of the participants who received sham TMS. “Some people responded quite well,” Folmer said. “We were surprised they maintained their improvement throughout the six months of follow-up. I thought if people showed an improvement it would be short-lived.”

It’s really difficult for all of us to see when we are being programmed or manipulated through advertisement/propaganda. But pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars on conditioning the population to choose its products over other methods of treatment. And sometimes we’re in automatic mode when we decide our choice in healthcare. This can be a problem for a number of reasons. The first thing to consider is if you are deciding to utilize a drug as your first option you might not understand the dangers of that approach. Besides the over 2000 deaths per week due to the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and the fact that medical care is a number one cause for death in United States based on CDC statistics there are other reasons to think twice about drugs being your first approach.

Simply put drugs don’t heal, drugs alter your perception of the condition. Let’s take headaches for example most headaches are caused by misalignments in the upper neck (muscle tension), other causes could be toxicity problems, allergies, low blood sugar or hormonal problems. Which of these do you think an aspirin fixes? Did you know aspirin causes bleeding in the stomach, Excess Stomach Acid Secretion, Stomach Cramps, Blood coming from Anus, Decreased White Blood Cells? This is just a partial list of potential side effects. Again the aspirin doesn’t treat any of the underlying causes for your condition. Let’s say your headaches were related to hormonal imbalances because of the developing ovarian cyst. You keep treating the headaches with an aspirin and your ovarian cyst keeps getting worse to the point that it might burst. Wouldn’t it have been nice if the physician you went to wanted to understand the source of your headaches? But a common problem is if you’re a MD/DO and have powerful drugs that can mask symptoms then when a patient presents with certain symptoms you are just gonna write a prescription and consider it appropriate care.

As a chiropractic physician we don’t mask symptoms with drugs, we have to figure out why the symptom is there. Just to classify the headache is a tension headache or migraine headache and then give the latest masking drug the pharmaceutical company has recommended, in my opinion, is not proper healthcare. Proper healthcare tries to determine the underlying cause for the condition and correct the cause. I’m not saying that can be done 100% of the time because we don’t understand the body fully, I am saying that most the time it can be. The underlying cause for allergies is not an antihistamine deficiency it’s an inappropriate functioning immune system. When you correct the immune system you correct the allergies. Acid reflux is not an antacid deficiency it is an imbalance somewhere within the digestive system. It needs to be found and corrected which might include changing your diet. Back pain is not a muscle relaxer or anti-inflammatory deficiency disease.

When you just treat the symptoms you allow the condition time to get worse. This is one of the reasons that chronic diseases are such a high prevalence in our society. When you chronically just treat symptoms over a lifetime you end up with a basket full of chronic conditions. And this is why many people live their last 10 or 15 years of life in a nursing home, in a wheelchair suffering from multiple health problems. If you don’t want to end up there you have to change the choices you make with your body. The fact is most drug therapy is inappropriate. Let me make this clear, there is a time for drugs and there is a time for surgeries but they should be the last approach. Unfortunately when you let certain conditions developed to the point of no return you eliminate a number of your options to get well.

Natural healthcare focuses on health not disease. Disease care has led to horrible health statistics for countries that focus their attention there. When a type II diabetic is taking one, two or three different medications to try to control their blood sugar they are in fact shortening their life span and making chronic disease more likely. It is true that antibiotics can help clear acne in patients who suffer from it but it’s also true that antibiotics will wreck havoc on your digestive track and weaken your immune system. Is acne a antibiotic deficiency disease? The skin is just the expression of the health of the body. Acne has to do with body ecology, hormonal balance and sometimes food allergies. Eating right is really not that hard with a little direction you can increase your energy levels, strengthen your cardiovascular systems and maintain proper blood sugar levels very easily. The third law is exercise. You don’t have to run a marathons, in fact you can over exercise to your detriment. Exercise is also related to your genetic makeup. Some people doing the wrong type of exercise can actually hurt themselves. People who have some type of moderate, regular exercise will be healthier than those who don’t. Law four is a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Life can be hard you need to have coping skills in order to to be successful. Spiritual disciplines have been shown by research to make us healthier and to allow us to live a longer life. In the fifth law is rest and relaxation.

It is nice  to have a fire department, it’s also a lot better that you never have to call them. And in most circumstances with a little prudence those disasters can be avoided. The natural healing process can be subtle sometimes, particularly if you are used to a drug affect in dealing with symptoms. Because drugs don’t heal they just suppress symptoms, sometimes the relief can be quick even though the underlying cause is not being addressed at all.

The natural healing process be it chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional therapy, detox, better diet or exercise the results come from internal healing and the reestablishment of normal function. Sometimes patients can feel a somewhat fast improvement, but real healing takes time.

If we’re talking about chiropractic adjustments, the purpose is to establish normal nervous system function. Since your nervous system controls and coordinates every part and system of the body you can see why reducing the stress on the nervous system is so important. The body knows exactly what to do to maintain proper function (health), just sometimes it can’t express that information because of stress on key nerves. Be it acid reflux, allergies, headaches, back pain or hormonal imbalances the body knows how to correct these. But when the communication channels of the body get compromised by misalignments, the body is not able to maintain normal function and thus disease is the result. It can take months and maybe years before that disease becomes manifest through symptoms. And so when you start care you might think because the symptoms just started last week or last month that it’s a young condition. The truth is this condition could’ve taken years to first become symptomatic. Yes the symptoms started last week or last month but the condition started years before.

As we begin to correct the problem at the spine then cells that have been functioning improperly take time to heal and reestablish normal function. Luckily symptoms can disappear fairly quickly in most cases and this can be confusing to patients because when the pain is gone or the symptom has left, they can think that they are well again. This can cause them to mistakenly end care too soon. And thus the condition will continue to develop underground until you have breakthrough symptoms eventually, which could be somewhat different than the symptoms you had before.

A similar scenario happens when we are doing nutritional therapy. Nutrients due to faulty diet, stress and other factors can become imbalanced or deficient over time. This will cause cells to start to malfunction and when enough cells are malfunctioning then the organ will start to malfunction. Again symptoms will be the last to appear and usually represent something that’s taken months if not years to develop. As we determine what nutrients are necessary to restore normal function it can take time for the body to do the healing. Again when the symptoms leave it doesn’t mean the process is completed.

There are a series of steps that tend to take place in all healing. The body will need to detox poisons that have developed due to faulty diet and systems that are not functioning properly and thus not detoxing properly. And then nutrient levels have to be reestablished and rebalanced in order for cells to start functioning properly. And as enough cells start to function as they should then the organ will start to function better. The body will start replacing weak and sick cells with stronger or more healthy cells. And so you literally get healthier one cell at a time. As cells and thus organs start to function better then the body as a whole needs to rebalance how organs and glands are functioning in order to maintain overall health.
