HOW TO DECIDE BETWEEN DRUGS OR NATURAL HEALTHCARE

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

It’s really difficult for all of us to see when we are being programmed or manipulated through advertisement/propaganda. But pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars on conditioning the population to choose its products over other methods of treatment. And sometimes we’re in an automatic mode when we decide our choice in healthcare. This can be a problem for a number of reasons. The first thing to consider is if you are deciding to utilize a drug as your first option you might not understand the dangers of that approach.

Besides the over 2000 deaths per week due to the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and the fact that medical care is a number one cause for death in the United States based on CDC statistics, there are other reasons to think twice about drugs being your first approach. Simply put drugs don’t heal, drugs alter your perception of the condition. Let’s take headaches, for example, most headaches are caused by misalignments in the upper neck (muscle tension) other causes could be toxicity problems, allergies, low blood sugar or hormonal problems. Which of these do you think an aspirin fixes? Did you know aspirin causes bleeding in the stomach, Excess Stomach Acid Secretion, Stomach Cramps, Blood coming from Anus, Decreased White Blood Cells? This is just a partial list of potential side effects. Again the aspirin doesn’t treat any of the underlying causes for your condition.

Let’s say your headaches were related to hormonal imbalances because of a developing ovarian cyst. You keep treating the headaches with an aspirin and your ovarian cyst keeps getting worse to the point that it might burst. Wouldn’t it have been nice if the physician you went to wanted to understand the source of your headaches? But a common problem is if you’re a physician and have powerful drugs that can mask symptoms then when a patient presents with certain symptoms you are just gonna write a prescription and consider it appropriate care.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

As a chiropractic physician, we don’t mask symptoms with drugs, we have to figure out why the symptom is there. Just to classify a headache is a tension headache or a migraine headache and then give the latest masking drug the pharmaceutical company has recommended, in my opinion, is not proper healthcare. Proper healthcare tries to determine the underlying cause for the condition and correct the cause. I’m not saying that can be done 100% of the time because science does not understand the body fully, I am saying that most the time it can be. The underlying cause of allergies is not an antihistamine deficiency it’s an inappropriate functioning immune system. When you correct the immune system you correct the allergies. Acid reflux is not an antacid deficiency it is an imbalance somewhere within the digestive system. It needs to be found and corrected which might include changing your diet.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Back pain is not a muscle relaxer or anti-inflammatory deficiency disease. When you just treat the symptoms you allow the condition time to get worse. This is one of the reasons that chronic diseases are such a high prevalence in our society. When you chronically just treat symptoms over a lifetime you end up with a basket full of chronic conditions. And this is why many people live their last 10 or 15 years of life in a nursing home or a wheelchair suffering from multiple health problems. If you don’t want to end up there you have to change the choices you make with your body. The fact is most drug therapy is inappropriate. Let me make this clear there is a time for drugs and there is a time for surgeries but they should be the last approach. Unfortunately, when you let certain conditions develop to the point of no return you eliminate a number of your options to get well.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

Natural healthcare focuses on health, not disease. Disease care has led to horrible health statistics for countries that focus their attention there. When a type II diabetic is taking one, two or three different medications to try to control their blood sugar they are in fact shortening their lifespan and making chronic disease more likely. The sad thing is the vast majority of type II diabetics can be drug-free and healthy by some simple dietary and nutritional approaches. Lowering your blood sugar with drugs to force the sugar out of the body is not the same as correcting the blood sugar problem. Find the cause, correct the cause.

It is true that antibiotics can help clear acne in patients who suffer from it but it’s also true that antibiotics will wreck havoc on your digestive tract and weaken your immune system. Is acne an antibiotic deficiency disease? The skin is just the expression of the health of the body. Acne has to do with body ecology, hormonal balance and sometimes food allergies. The chances are the use of antibiotics will make each of these issues worse. And has anybody heard of superbug infections? The overuse of antibiotics is the number one cause of death from superbug infections that have been growing every year for the past 25 years. Is there a place for antibiotics? There is but it’s very rare. There are so many natural immune boosting techniques in natural healthcare that well over 90% of my patients never require any antibiotics in their life as long as they are following the approaches we recommend. Sure there are exceptions to every rule but in our society, the exception is the rule.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Do you want to be healthy? Drugs are not going to get you there. Drugs could save your life but the same drugs that saved your life could end your life if you keep taking them. Drugs are toxic, drugs are dangerous. If you want to be healthy then you have to practice a healthy lifestyle. Did you know your nervous system controlled and coordinated everything that happens in your body? That’s why we focus on spinal health to maintain a proper nervous system function. That is one of the five laws of health that we encourage patients to follow. The second law would be the law of diet. Do you really believe you could eat Twinkies all day and stay healthy? Of course not. But just like the big Pharma, big food has programmed you into digging your own grave with your fork. You have to eat a diet that’s consistent with your genetic makeup and actually has real food in it. Eating right is really not that hard with a little direction you can increase your energy levels, strengthen your cardiovascular systems and maintain proper blood sugar levels very easily. The third law is exercise. You don’t have to run marathons, in fact, you can over-exercise to your detriment. Exercise is also related to your genetic makeup. Some people doing the wrong type of exercise can actually hurt themselves. People who have some type of moderate, regular exercise will be healthier than those who don’t. Law four is a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Life can be hard you need to have coping skills in order to be successful. Spiritual disciplines have been shown by research to make us healthier and to allow us to live a longer life. In the fifth law is rest and relaxation.

None of these laws are really difficult to follow you just need to find yourself in a culture that encourages these. The pharmaceutical approach is not that culture. As nice as it is to have a fire department it’s also a lot better if you never have to call them. And in most circumstances with a little prudence, those disasters can be avoided. One of the best ways to find yourself in the culture of better health is to choose natural healthcare. Making natural healthcare your first choice can prevent a number of disasters in your life and your families health. You still might be referred to a medical specialist from time to time but if your primary care is a physician in the natural healthcare field your outcomes would be greatly improved.

Are you locked in the matrix? Choose natural healthcare and choose a better life.

IN THE NEWS: Conspiracy to Hide New Data on Water Pollution A major government report showing widespread contamination of U.S. water supplies with toxic chemicals was kept from the public for months in order to prevent a “potential public relations nightmare”. The report, prepared by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), focused on perfluoroalkyl chemicals (PFASs), widely used in nonstick cookware, carpet, fabrics, coatings for paper and cardboard packaging and firefighting foams. Widespread water contamination with PFASs was noted near military bases, chemical plants and elsewhere in the U.S.; PFASs have been linked to negative liver, cardiovascular, endocrine, immune, reproductive and developmental effects. The report warned that the chemicals could harm human health at levels significantly lower than those deemed safe by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).NOTE: the EPA has been warning people in large cities to boil the water before they drink it. Now even small towns are dealing with unsafe water. For your families health drink filtered water or buy a filtering system that can make tap water safe.

WELLNESS: STAY WELL, REDUCE INFLAMMATION To reduce levels of inflammation, aim for an overall healthy diet. If you’re looking for an eating plan that closely follows the tenets of anti-inflammatory eating, consider the Mediterranean diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and healthy oils. Here are five remedies to reduce joint pain and inflammation: Bromelain. Bromelain is a powerful enzyme found in the most delightful tropical fruit, pineapple. …Turmeric. Turmeric is a root. …Devil’s Claw. Devil’s claw is definitely not the paw of a devil but it kind of looks like one!  White Willow Bark. …Egg Membrane. Here are a couple of recipes to help reduce inflammation. Vegetables & Chickpeas: 2 tablespoons coconut oil or ghee-1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas, rinsed and patted dry-1 teaspoon garam masala or Indian curry powder-1 cup roasted root vegetables (see associated recipe)-1 teaspoon sugar or honey-¼ teaspoon kosher salt-¼ teaspoon ground pepper-2 tablespoons lemon juice-2 tablespoons low-fat plain yogurt or tahini-Chopped fresh herbs, such as mint, parsley and/or cilantro, for garnish. Mediterranean Tuna-Spinach Salad 2 tablespoons feta cheese-2 tablespoons parsley-2 cups baby spinach-1 medium orange, peeled or sliced

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Autoimmune diseases, when your immune system doesn’t like you. Allergies are something that we see all the time and respond well to treatment. When you have allergies, say to ragweed, ragweed isn’t trying to attack you but your immune system thinks it is. All the symptoms from hayfever are caused by your body fighting a non-enemy. That fight can become serious if it starts closing off air passages. There is another condition that similar to allergies and those conditions fall under the umbrella of autoimmune disease. There are more than 80 types of autoimmune diseases, and some have similar symptoms. This makes it hard for your health care provider to know if you really have one of these diseases, and if so, which one. Getting a diagnosis can be frustrating and stressful. Often, the first symptoms are fatigue, muscle aches and a low fever. The classic sign of an autoimmune disease is inflammation, which can cause redness, heat, pain and swelling. The presence of a large amount of autoantibodies or ANAs can indicate an autoimmune disease. ANAs could signal the body to begin attacking itself which can lead to autoimmune diseases,  including lupussclerodermaSjögren ’s syndromepolymyositis/dermatomyositis, mixed connective tissue disease, drug-induced lupus, and autoimmune hepatitis. A positive ANA can also be seen in juvenile arthritis. The good news about autoimmune disease is that, like allergies, the conditioning most cases can be addressed naturally. Some of the treatment is similar to our program for general allergies. The thymus gland which is under your breastbone just below your thyroid is a big player in a lot of autoimmune diseases. The overall approach will include: detox, chiropractic adjustments to reestablish normal control over the immune system, dietary changes to balance blood chemistry, nutritional therapy to rebuild and balance the immune system and the elimination of general allergies. Chiropractic offers a drug-free, safe approach to autoimmune disease.

IN THE NEWS: Video games: risky or beneficial Playing video games may lead to improvements in areas of attention, cognitive control and workload, visuospatial skills and more. Video games may alter the reward-processing areas of your brain, potentially leading to addiction, and may desensitize players to violence. If you play video games on your TV or computer at night, be sure to take steps to protect yourself from exposure to blue light from the screen (such as wearing blue-blocking glasses after sundown). Addicted to video games: At an addiction treatment center in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, teenagers and young adults begin detox by admitting they are powerless over their addiction. But these addicts aren’t hooked on drugs or alcohol. They are going cold turkey to break their dependence on video games. Keith Bakker, director of Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants, tells WebMD he created the new program in response to a growing problem among young men and boys. “The more we looked at it, the more we saw [gaming] was taking over the lives of kids.” Detox for video game addiction may sound like a stretch, but addiction experts say the concept makes sense. “I was surprised we didn’t think of it here in America,” says Kimberly Young, PsyD, clinical director of the Center for On-Line Addiction and author of Caught in the Net: How to Recognize the Signs of Internet Addiction — and a Winning Strategy for Recovery. “I’ve had so many parents call me over the last year or two, particularly about the role-playing games online. I see it getting worse as the opportunity to game grows – for example, cell phone gaming.” But can a game truly become an addiction? Absolutely, Young tells WebMD. “It’s a clinical impulse control disorder,” an addiction in the same sense as compulsive gambling.

WELLNESS: “The Power of Bioavailable B Vitamins – What Could Your Life Look Like If You Had More?” Low levels of B vitamins are becoming more commonplace just as researchers discover exciting new benefits for this valuable family of nutrients. For the sake of your body and brain, I suggest you take advantage of their new findings and, above all, make sure you’re not making these eating and supplement mistakes. Researchers are discovering potential benefits of the family of B vitamins that are much greater than we ever imagined. Keep in mind; you don’t need to have a flat-out deficiency in any of these vitamins. Surprisingly, many of the subjects in the studies you’re going to hear about didn’t. They just had lower levels. Increasing their intake of these vitamins made all the difference for these study subjects. Going from low or even routinely recommended minimal levels to optimal levels allowed them to benefit in significant ways! 13 Signs You May Be Low in B Vitamins: Inability to sleep well, Fatigue and apathy, Mental “fog,” confusion, and forgetfulness, Mood swings and irritability, Gastrointestinal symptoms, Joint or muscle discomfort, Muscle weakness, Loss of muscle mass, Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, Frequent bruising, Headaches, Irritability, Dry, cracking skin. Because the vitamin B complex is a group of eight major B vitamins that work together, you can impact their synergy just by running low on one. For example, many of the B complex vitamins are needed for healthy skin. If you’re low in one or two, that can affect the actions of the others. Fresh, whole foods like meat, fish, dairy, and whole grains provide ample supplies of B vitamins. Yet once you process those foods, you jeopardize the integrity of the B vitamins as many are sensitive to heat, light, air, and long storage times. As we’ve just seen, these water-soluble nutrients are required for your healthy normal: Brain and nervous system function, Growth and development, Immune function, Energy production, Cell metabolism, Organ and tissue health, Muscle, skin, and eye health, Appetite and digestion. The B vitamins act as coenzymes and play a key role in the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein, and fat.

CHIROPRACTIC: INNATE INTELLIGENCE Healing comes from within. The wisdom that made your body can heal your body. Chiropractic science teaches that the body has an inborn ability to heal itself. In chiropractic, we call this innate intelligence. When you cut your finger in most cases all you need to do is clean the cut and the body will do the rest. When you break a bone if it is not severely dislocated the body can pull the bone back together and make it stronger than it was before the break. As a chiropractic physician, I rely on your body’s inborn intelligence to produce the results from care. My job is to remove the interference and let innate intelligence do the rest. Yes, we have to give innate the proper building blocks through proper diet and nutrition plus we need to stop overloading the body with toxic chemicals and depleted nutrients like refined carbohydrates or junk food. Exercise, oxygen, clean water, stress reduction and proper rest are all components necessary for good health. Drugs cannot give you healthy tissue cells, vitamins cannot give you healthy tissue cells without innate intelligence doing its job. That’s why the adjustment is so important. The doctor inside needs to have full access to every part of your body in order to maintain good health. Nerve pressure interferes with the innate intelligence’s ability to restore health. Who do you know who would benefit from chiropractic care? Chiropractic releases health from within, not from a pill.

DIET: What Is Chaga Tea? Are you tired of drinking the same old tea over and over? Chaga mushroom tea may be a good option for you. Chaga tea has been used in the East for hundreds  of years to boost immunity and improve overall health. It is now gaining popularity in Western countries, as numerous studies are touting the nutritional components chaga mushrooms are filled with. Chaga (Inonotus obliquus) is a parasitic fungus commonly found in cold climates, typically in Siberia, Alaska and Northern Canada. While chaga may look like something you wouldn’t want anywhere near you it is actually popular for its wide array of health benefits. The high concentration of vitamins, minerals and nutrients it contains paved the way for chaga to be lauded as a superfood. Due to its unique appearance, experts are not quite sure whether chaga is a mushroom or another type of fungus. After numerous studies showed the benefits of chaga consumption, chaga product availability in the market has increased. These products range from raw chaga mushroom chunks, chaga tea, skin cream, lip balm and joint rubs. However, brewing chaga tea may be the easiest way for you to benefit from this mushroom. Chaga tea contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals that are essential to keeping the body at peak condition. It is rich in vitamin B2, vitamin D, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, cesium, silicon and a lot more. It has been used to help reduce the risk of tumor growth, aid in tuberculosis treatment and improve stomach problems, boost immune function, helps keep information at bay, helps in detoxification and blood pressure control.

IN THE NEWS: Are There Risks From Secondhand Marijuana Smoke? Early Science Says Yes Springer was already researching the health effects of secondhand tobacco smoke on rats at his lab at UCSF. He decided to run the same tests using joints. He knew it would be difficult. Marijuana is still an illegal drug under federal law, and Springer’s research uses federal funds; so he has to purchase specially approved government cannabis for study. He also can’t test it on humans; hence, the rats. In the lab, Springer puts a cigarette or a joint in a plexiglass box. Then he lights it, and lets the chamber fill with smoke, where an anesthetized rat is exposed to the smoke. So far, Springer and his colleagues have published research demonstrating that secondhand smoke makes it harder for the rats’ arteries to expand and allow a healthy flow of blood. With tobacco products, this effect lasts about 30 minutes, and then the arteries recover their normal function. But if it happens over and over — as when a person is smoking cigarette after cigarette, for example — the arterial walls can become permanently damaged, and that damage can cause blood clots, heart attack or stroke. Springer demonstrated that, at least in rats, the same physiological effect occurs after inhaling secondhand smoke from marijuana. And, the arteries take 90 minutes to recover compared to the 30 minutes with cigarette smoke. Springer’s discovery about the effect on blood vessels describes just one harmful impact for nonsmokers who are exposed to marijuana. Statewide sampling surveys of cannabis products sold in marijuana dispensaries have shown that cannabis products may contain dangerous bacteria or mold, or residues from pesticides and solvents. Cynthia Hallett is the president of Americans for Nonsmokers’ Rights, based in Berkeley, Calif. Hallett says some of the arguments being made in support of cannabis remind her of the arguments made on behalf of tobacco decades ago.

CHIROPRACTIC: Why Chiropractic Is Your Best Option for Pain Pain is a major problem, but so is medication use to help relieve the pain. If you haven’t realized by now that chiropractic care, not drugs, is your best option for pain, perhaps you’ll be swayed by some recent research. Let’s take a quick look at two studies in particular. Follow along and see how the latest research supports our conclusion. It’s not too late to avoid the pain-reliever epidemic. It’s never too late to choose chiropractic. First, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as acetaminophen (Tylenol), ibuprofen (Aleve) and other commonly administered pain relievers are more effective than opioids (64,000 opioids overdose deaths estimated in 2016) for relieving chronic back, knee and hip pain. NSAIDs also win out over opioids in terms of reducing limitations in the ability to perform activities of daily living (walking, working, sleeping, etc.). So, point #1: Opioids aren’t your best option for pain. But neither are NSAIDs, at least when compared to chiropractic, according to a study that also appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Chiropractic spinal manipulation reduced pain and improved function in back pain patients after six weeks of treatment, and results were similar to that achieved with NSAID use – but without the side effects and other risks associated with medication use (particularly use for more than 10 days at a time). So, point #2: NSAIDs aren’t your best option, either. Point #3 should be clear by now: When it comes to pain relief, chiropractic care is the effective, safe option to turn to first – a point emphasized by an increasing number of major health care organizations these days. Talk to your doctor about the risks associated with opioids and other pain relievers, and why chiropractic care is the natural, drug-free first choice. Make the right choice … choose chiropractic today.

IN THE NEWS: Please Don’t Be Conned by This Health Fraud, No Matter How Much You Want to Trust It Conflicts of interest between government and industry allow dangerous drugs to be approved and aggressively marketed. The drug industry also spends billions a year on TV ads — revenue from just nine prescription drugs was worth $100 million in one year — which also stifles negative news stories about Pharma. Even so-called “public” media like PBS and NPR have accepted money from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and UnitedHealthcare. Similar conflicts of interest exist at medical journals, universities, medical associations, advocacy groups and government agencies, including those that are supposed to regulate the drug industry. The result is the Ghost in the Machine that we live with today — deceived patients taking expensive, often dangerous drugs and soaring health costs. Advertising revenues and industry board members prevent mainstream media from reporting on Pharma corruption. Because of Pharma influence in academia and publishing, a lot of health research is biased and misleading. This is how Dr. Terrence Norchi, president and CEO of Arch Therapeutics, explains the profitable new partnerships. “For the past 15 years, the pipelines of the big [drug] companies have been drying up … At the same time, there is a tremendous amount of pressure on academic institutions in this country and abroad. To survive, many universities will have to find creative ways to make themselves more relevant. There are opportunities to mutually solve these challenges between academia and industry.” Such Pharma/academia partnerships date back to the Bayh-Dole Act of 1980, which allowed universities to “patent discoveries that stem from government-funded research and then license them exclusively to companies in return for royalties,” wrote Marcia Angell, former editor-in-chief of the New England Journal of Medicine and Harvard lecturer, in the Boston Review. Natural, safer and less expensive treatments are discredited by mainstream medicine, raising everyone’s health care costs.

IN THE NEWS: Painkiller addiction: the plague that is sweeping the US Pain is the number one reason that people visit a doctor. What most people don’t realize is in most cases doctors are at complete loss on how to address the condition that’s causing the pain. If there’s nothing they can cut out or an infection they can treat with antibiotics then pain pills are there primary choice. This lack of proper training is devastating to our country. Simply writing a prescription and not dealing with the root cause is leading to close to 200,000 deaths per year for all types of drugs. The more pain pills handed out, the more cases of addiction; the more cases of addiction, the more illegal street trafficking of the drugs; the more illegal street trafficking, the more snorting and injecting of the crushed pills; the more snorting and injecting, the more overdoses; the more overdoses, the more deaths. The death toll exceeds that caused by heroin and cocaine combined, and in 17 states has become the No 1 cause of injury deaths, surpassing even car crashes. At around the same time, drug companies, led by Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the leading opioid painkiller OxyContin, embarked on a massive marketing push. In 2001, Purdue Pharma spent $200m promoting OxyContin. Primary care physicians, in particular, were targeted, and their patients induced to try out the drug with 30-day free trial periods. Pharmaceutical companies are not looking out for your best interest. Don’t let pharmaceutical companies make you a drug addict seek solutions for your pain.

WELLNESS: FOODS FOR PAIN Ginger A staple of traditional medicine, this pungent root is probably best known for its anti-nausea, stomach-soothing properties. But ginger can also fight pain, including achy muscles from exercise as well as menstrual cramps. One study found ginger capsules worked as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen at relieving period pain. Blueberries These little juicy gems have lots of phytonutrients that may fight inflammation and lessen pain. If it’s not berry season, frozen blueberries can have the same or even more nutrients than fresh. Other fruits with antioxidants and polyphenols, including strawberries and oranges, can have a similar soothing effect. Pumpkin Seeds Pepitas are a terrific source of magnesium, a mineral that may cut the number of migraines you get. It may also help prevent and treat osteoporosis. But despite what you may have heard, it doesn’t seem to stop leg cramps at night. For more magnesium, add almonds and cashews, dark green leafy vegetables (like spinach and kale), beans, and lentils to your diet. Salmon Loaded with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, salmon makes just about all of the “good for you” lists. It’s considered heart-healthy and may relieve joint tenderness if you have rheumatoid arthritis. Other varieties of cold-water fish, including tuna, sardines, and mackerel, are good choices, too. Avoid tilapia and catfish, though: Their higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids may promote inflammation. Turmeric The compound in the spice that gives curry its bright orange-yellow color can affect several processes in your body, including inflammation. Studies of people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis who took supplements of curcumin found they could walk better and without the side effects of taking drugs. Black pepper can help your body absorb it, so try a blend of the spices, steeped with ginger and honey into a tea. Tart Cherries In one study, runners who drank tart cherry juice starting 7 days before a race and on race day (12 ounces, twice daily) had significantly less muscle pain than a group who swigged a similar-tasting beverage with no natural juice. It could be from the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in the fruit. Chili Peppers Capsaicin, the stuff that gives chilies their heat, is well known for its painkilling properties in creams and patches. Some early research suggests that eating hot peppers, instead of putting them on your skin, may reduce and prevent inflammation, too. The “burn” also tricks your brain into releasing endorphins, which block pain signals. Mint Peppermint oil relieves the painful cramps, gas, and bloating that are the hallmarks of irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint tea is a good soother for occasional tummy upset. In early research, Brazilian mint tea (made from the plant Hyptnis crenata) has been as effective as a prescription painkiller.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Chiropractic and pain  There are different types of pain including chronic pain, nerve pain, psychogenic pain, musculoskeletal pain, abdominal pain, complex regional pain syndrome etc. so pain has to be addressed at the source and so it’s important to understand what’s causing the pain. Is it a chemical imbalance? Is it some type of electrical imbalance within the nervous system or is it due to some other condition that needs to be treated. Chiropractic has a history of resolving pain when other approaches fail and with today’s powerfully addictive pain pills it’s important to seek solution for your pain instead of just treating the symptoms. Pain pills can damage the liver (over 20,000 arthritic’s die every year from liver failure because of pain pills) and kidneys (3500 women a year die from kidney failure taking ibuprofen for their headaches), lungs, stomach and intestines as well as muscles. Chiropractic has multiple tools when it comes to pain. For neck and back pain as well as other joint pain realignment is very effective. Even with joints like elbows, knees, fingers or feet adjustments can be very effective. Next when we get into inflammation nutritional therapy becomes increasingly important. Even your body pH can set you up for pain when you are too acidic that leads to inflammation and pain. Homeopathy, acupuncture, electrotherapy, pulse magnetic therapy are just a few of the tools that we use at Keefe clinic. If you or a friend suffer from pain seek solutions, seek care by a chiropractic physician, you’ll be glad that you did.

Death by medical doctors

Low back pain is the number 1 health problem in the United States and most Western countries. Both drugs and surgery have been shown to be inferior approaches in the treatment of low back pain.

prostate-cancer-Dr. Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor, neck pain, headache,

91 people die every day because of opiate addiction started by a prescription given to them by their medical doctor for pain, low back pain being the most common. Medical doctors have minimal training in structural problems that’s why they throw drugs and surgery at the problem. In the 1990s the US government released a report to every doctor’s office and healthcare facility in the US concerning low back pain and recommending spinal adjusting as the number 1 active and effective treatment. Yet you will read below that supposedly most doctors are unaware of this. Drug therapy kills 2000 people a week based on Senate reports and that has been happening for as long as we have records and will only increase if change isn’t forced upon the medical profession. Here’s a summary of the report released by the government around 20 years ago.

The Agency for Health Care Policy and Research, a branch of Health and Human Services, reviewed all treatments for acute low back pain and developed the following conclusions:

Physical therapy is not cost effective.

Acupuncture is not effective.

Over the counter anti-inflammatory medication worked as well as prescription ones (Cox-2 inhibitors were not included in the study).

Sclerotherapy and Prolotherapy are not effective.

The use of cortisone injections should be used only in cases of sciatic pain which radiates down the leg and doesn’t respond to conservative therapy.

Surgery is over used and should be offered in less then 1% of cases.

Rest should be given initially for 24-48 hours.

Early movement that is tolerable should be initiated after 48 hours.

Cushioning in shoes can be helpful.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Spinal adjustments are the only active form of therapy given by a professional which is helpful.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Since most doctors and patients are not aware of this report, patients all around the country are needlessly suffering and being mistreated. There are many treatments available for severe back problems that have better short and long term benefits over spinal surgery, epidural injections and long term pain medications. Our office is aware of the latest advances and are free to discuss these alternatives with you. 918-663-1111

IN THE NEWS: 7 tips for reducing hunger if you’re on a diet When you’re looking to shed a few extra pounds, do you really need to fight through hunger pains to know you’re losing weight? Lauren Blake, a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, agreed, and told Fox News that people shouldn’t restrict to the point that they’re always hungry. “There’s evidence that says when we restrict too much, it can be harmful to our metabolism, and it supports the loss of lean muscle mass,” she said.  1. Don’t skip breakfast. To regulate your hunger throughout the day, eat breakfast, whether that’s a bowl of cereal, some eggs, or even dinner leftovers, Planells said. 2. Keep healthy snacks on hand. To keep your blood sugar stable, avoid going four hours or more without eating, Planells said. Try snacks like yogurt, a handful of nuts, or even peanut butter and fruit to keep you full, he said. 3. Don’t drink your calories. Drinks deliver calories a lot faster than solids, Blake said. And since our guts sense fullness based on volume, not calories, drinks won’t leave us as satiated as solid foods, she explained. 4. Reach for whole, fiber-rich foods. Whole foods like fruits and vegetables are naturally lower in calories, and also have more water content and fiber that will keep you full longer, Blake said. Planells agreed: He noted that while the general American consumes about 10 grams of fiber per day, dietitians generally recommend Americans consume 25 to 30 grams per day. 5. Feature protein in your meals. Protein helps with satiety, Planells said. Try animal-based sources such as beef, chicken, pork, or fish, or plant-based sources like soy and quinoa, which have the added benefit of extra fiber, Planells said. 6. If you’re hungry late at night, drink a glass of water. Sometimes, we can mistake hunger for thirst. If you’re hungry late at night, try drinking a glass of water, Planells said. 7Do order an appetizer if you’re dining out. It might seem counterintuitive, but don’t skip the appetizer section of the menu if you’re dining out. Opt for a bone-based soup or a salad to help fill you up and reduce the risk of overeating during the main course, Blake said.

WELLNESS: How to Improve Your Failing Ability to Read Clearly as You Age, With the Help of Sunshine Nearsightedness is incredibly common, affecting an estimated 40 percent of Americans and up to 90 percent of young adults in Asian countries. A 2015 study estimated up to one-third of the world’s population may be nearsighted by the end of the decade — that’s 2.5 billion people. The following year, a meta-analysis of 145 studies predicted nearly half of the world will be nearsighted by the year 2050. One longstanding theory was that excessive reading at close distance (particularly in poor lighting) could lead to nearsightedness. Research refutes this theory, noting a clear lack of association between the two. Mounting research now shows the risk of nearsightedness is closely linked to time spent outdoors, both for children and adults. To protect your vision, you need regular exposure to bright sunlight. Nearsightedness (myopia), is a vision problem in which close objects appear clear but distant objects are blurry. This condition is thought to be caused by refractive errors in your eye. Refraction is the bending of light as it passes through one object to another. When light rays are refracted through your eye’s cornea and lens, they become focused on the retina, which then converts the light into messages sent through the optic nerve to your brain, which then interprets the messages into images. Refractive errors occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing properly on your retina. This can occur by changes in the shape of your eye, such as the length of your eyeball or shape of your cornea, and/or changes in your lens due to aging. But what exactly is responsible for these changes? Two studies, the first published in 20077 and the second in 2008, found that rates of nearsightedness in children appeared to be closely linked to the amount of time spent outdoors. The greater the number of hours spent playing outside, the lower the risk of nearsightedness. In other words, keeping kids indoors and/or instilling a fear of sun exposure (for skin cancer reasons) may be at the heart of the world’s growing myopia problem. Remarkably, according to a British survey, 75 percent of children in the U.K. spend less time outdoors than prison inmates!

CHIROPRACTIC: Reduction of Labor and Delivery Time Due to Chiropractic Care The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on April 3, 2017, documenting the case of a woman who experienced a shorter and easier birth due to chiropractic care. This improvement was compared to her first pregnancy and delivery where she did not receive any chiropractic care. The study begins by noting that chiropractic care has been involved in the care of pregnant women since the early days of the profession over a century ago. In this study, a 28-year-old woman went to the chiropractor for evaluation and possible care. She sought chiropractic for a pain in her tailbone area as well as for wellness care. The woman believed that her pelvis had shifted due to her first pregnancy. She reported that after the delivery of her firstborn, she experienced pain and discomfort at her tailbone any time she sat on a hard surface. The woman reported that her first pregnancy went well, but that her delivery was very long and difficult. This was one of the factors in her desire to receive chiropractic care in anticipation of her second pregnancy. Her history revealed that between the ages of eight and sixteen, she was a competitive gymnast and was receiving chiropractic intermittently during that time. She also noted that she did not receive any chiropractic care during her first pregnancy. Prior to her first pregnancy, she did not have tailbone pain. She later attributed her long and difficult labor and delivery as being the cause of the tailbone pain. As with her first birth, the woman decided to have her second child at home. She was supervised by the same Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) that attended her first home birth. According to the midwife, the woman’s first labor and delivery time combined was 32 hours and 25 minutes. After chiropractic care, the midwife reported that the woman’s labor and delivery times for her second child was only two hours and 45 minutes combined. In their conclusion, the study authors note that chiropractic care during pregnancy is far more valuable than just symptomatic relief of musculoskeletal pains, and should be considered for the overall wellness and process of pregnancy. They stated, “This case report provides supporting evidence that subluxation centered chiropractic care on pregnant patients can have beneficial effects on the birthing process.”

WELLNESS: Long-term marijuana use linked to changes in brain’s reward system People who use marijuana for many years respond differently to natural rewards than people who don’t use the drug, according to a new study. “This study shows that marijuana disrupts the natural reward circuitry of the brain, making marijuana highly salient to those who use it heavily,” study author Dr. Francesca Filbey, an associate professor of behavioral and brain science at the University of Texas at Dallas, said in a statement. “In essence, these brain alterations could be a marker of transition to problematic use.” The researchers also looked at the relationship between certain problems linked to marijuana use, such as family issues, and the people’s brain responses to the pictures of marijuana paraphernalia. It turned out that the more problems that people’s marijuana use was related to, the more their brains responded to the marijuana cues. “The greater the number of problems they had indicating potential cannabis use disorder, the greater the alterations are in their response to the cues,” Filbey told Live Science.

Understanding nutritional therapy

Understanding nutritional therapy

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Most people today realize the importance of natural laws like proper diet and nutrition when it comes to good health. It was only about 45 to 50 years ago that even medical doctors weren’t so sure about that. I remember watching a debate between a cardiologist and a lay nutritional expert arguing about the importance of nutrition for healthy hearts. The cardiologist actually stated that foods are only needed for energy and there was no other nutritional benefit from eating foods. He totally dismissed the importance of vitamins and minerals and he was a doctor. So the fact that laypeople might have confusion about diet is understandable. There are 2 components about nutrition that I would like to speak to. One of those is diet and matching the proper ratio of fats, carbs and proteins to particular genetic makeup.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

In some ways we’re all the same but in other ways we are different. Our genetic code determines how we utilize certain nutrients. Our body shapes will require different ratios of fats carbohydrates and proteins. So the foundation of proper nutrition is eating the right diet for your particular body type.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Nutritional therapy, using supplements to balance body chemistry, is the focus of this discussion. Just like each different body type requires a different ratio of fats carbs and proteins each individual has slightly different demands for certain nutrition. That’s one reason why a multivitamin is completely unable to supply what a given person needs. There are even some studies that show negative effects from taking multivitamins. We only give multivitamins in very specific cases. Our main goal is determining what nutrients are needed in reestablishing a better chemical balance as well as health status.

headachespine, Dr. Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor, neck pain, Dr. Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor, neck pain, headache,,

Different things can impact on your demand for nutrients, stress, exercise or the lack of exercise, disease, toxicity and many other factors. As these factors change your nutritional needs will change and so nutritional therapy is a dynamic and ever-changing approach towards health. The idea that you can take 4 or 5 nutrients that are most commonly talked about in the news is not the way to maintain good health.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Working with nutritional needs since 1976 I have found that nutritional therapy is quite a dynamic endeavor and one might need to change their program on a regular basis as her body reaches higher levels of function and health. We might pick up a nutrient that you need that you might only take for a week or a month or maybe over a year. Our testing procedures allows us to not only determine what nutrients or nutritional formula that you need but we can also determine how long you need to take that.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Many people don’t realize the advancements in nutritional therapy over the past 40 some years. The fact is with today’s knowledge there are very few health issues that can’t be effectively addressed. Acid reflux, cardiovascular disease, different hormonal imbalances, reoccurring infections, allergies and blood sugar disorders are just a few of the conditions that can respond. But the process isn’t as simple as we find a few nutritional formulas and you take those and everything clears up. It’s more complicated than that, because there can be several layers of dysfunction with any given problem. For instance you might have a blood sugar problem that could be related to the liver issue and adrenal gland dysfunction and an immune system disorder. Each of those will need to be addressed and sometimes in a specific order to resolve the original blood sugar problem. So during the process of treating the presenting blood sugar problem is going to be a time when we need to focus on the liver, and then the adrenals and lastly the immune system. Each of those could require separate nutritional approaches at separate times. Sometimes the body can’t address everything at once. So through periodic testing and re-addressing the nutritional program that you’re on full healing can take place over time.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

When we go about developing an overall strategy to help someone recover their health certain testing might be indicated. A complete physical exam, blood work and other laboratory testing as well as Vega testing. Vega testing is a biofeedback form of testing that allows us to plug into your computer, so to speak, and pick up important information concerning your nutritional needs. Individualizing nutritional programs produce the best results in the long run. Vega testing allows us to individualize an approach and also minimize the number of nutrients needed in an effective program.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

The most important part of the supplemental program is taking the supplements on a regular enough basis to get well. Some people have expressed difficulty in swallowing pills. There are a few secrets in making this process easier. One of them is taking your supplements with food, if were talking about tablets putting a little bit of butter on the tablet allows it to go down easier. Capsules are the easiest to swallow if you have the right head position. Capsules will float on water where tablets tend to sink. So when you’re swallowing a capsule lean your head forward and if you’re swallowing a tablet lean your head back. It’s best not to combine capsules and tablets if you have any problems swallowing pills. I have found when you’re taking in water right before you swallow the pill breathe in through your nose. This will help close off the windpipe so supplements don’t try to go down the wrong way and will make swallowing pills much easier.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: SUBLUXATION spinal misalignments are called subluxation which means a misalignment less than the dislocation. A dislocation is a surgical condition whereas subluxations are detected and corrected by chiropractic physicians. You can carry slight misalignments in your spine and not even feel them. You won’t feel them because there are different types of nerves within the nervous system. Only sensory nerves would display some type of symptom like pain, numbness, tingling or other sensations. Motor nerves do not register pain. Motor nerves control muscles, organs and glands. So the longer the subluxation remains uncorrected the more dysfunction that will develop within the body. As these misalignments rub improperly with other segments this produces inflammatory changes that lead to degenerative arthritis that shows up years after the misalignment. Unfortunately you might not ever feel the development ubtil it is producing severe stress upon the nervous system. Then it’s more difficult to correct. So be it neck or back, arm or leg pain or organs and systems not working properly chiropractic can help restore normal nervous system function.

The researchers say the inheritance of risk could help explain why there has been a steep rise in asthma cases over the last 50 years, even though smoking rates have declined.

WELLNESS: Study suggests a way to get kids to eat more veggies Researchers from Texas A&M may have found an easier way to get kids to eat their vegetables than trying to convince them Spider-Man actually got his powers from green beans: Just pair veggies with other foods they don’t like that much. The Washington Post reports nine out of 10 kids don’t eat enough vegetables, and the problem of wasted veggies is only getting worse since the National School Lunch Program started requiring vegetables on every plate. One psychologist tells the Post that schools have found success in serving vegetables on their own, thus eliminating the competition. “We tested it with kids in school cafeterias, where it more than quadrupled the amount of vegetables eaten.” (Or, just do what Congress did and declare pizza a vegetable.)

How appetite affects the brain

661PotatoChips.jpg

Scientists often distinguish between “wanting” (“when I get this thing, life is better”) and “needing” (“unless I get this thing, life is worse”). In other words, “want” applies when you’re still trying out something; “need” applies when it owns you.

There is an equally interesting, if subtler, distinction between “wanting” and “liking.” Many times, we want more of something without liking it more. This category often covers things that we use instrumentally to achieve a long-term goal: For example, “I don’t like these gewgaws, but I want them all very badly because there’s a great potential market of people who want them even worse.”

A recent paper by Alison Jing Xu of the University of Minnesota and colleagues, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, shows how brain wiring can throw a wrench into this logic of wanting versus liking—so that we end up wanting something that we not only don’t like but also can’t use to better our lives in any way.

We start with a no-brainer: When our bodies are low on calories, we feel hungry. We animals then hunt more tenaciously, climb higher to search in trees for fruit, look longer for bugs to eat and—if we are pets—push our empty food bowls more irksomely against our owners’ ankles. In other words, hunger motivates food-acquisition behavior.

As it turns out, hunger also subliminally shifts our cognition. Prof. Xu’s team had volunteers look at a screen where combinations of letters appeared for a fraction of a second, and subjects had to rapidly say whether the letters formed correctly spelled words. Subjects who were hungry were more accurate at recognizing food-related words (”I have no idea if that was ‘broom’ or ‘broon,’ but that sure was ‘cookie’.”) So our basic animal wiring (“me hungry, me get food”) can unconsciously infiltrate how we perform the very sophisticated human task of reading comprehension.

But Prof. Xu’s team found something even more intriguing. When subjects doing the word/nonword task were hungry, they not only improved on food-related words but get better by an equal measure at assessing the accuracy of words related to acquisition in general (e.g., want, obtain, gain). Hunger doesn’t just prime us to think about food acquisition; it primes us to think about acquisition in general.

The researchers also found other evidence of this motivational shift. They gave 77 subjects a list of five food and five nonfood items and asked them to rate how much they wanted each one. Hungry subjects wanted both the food and the nonfood items more intensely than sated ones did.

IN THE NEWS: A NEW STUDY IN THE JOURNAL PEDIATRICS   SUGGESTS that hand washing of dishes may be healthier than using an automatic dishwasher. The study, which looked at 1029 families with children ages 7-8 years finds that some allergy related disorders are less common in families who primarily hand wash their dinner and cookware as opposed to using a dishwasher. The authors theorize that perhaps, since hand washing would appear to be a less thorough method of cleansing, residual bacteria left on dinnerware might help subjects to develop a more natural tolerance to various allergens. Some findings include the following. Eczema was seen in 38% of children from “dishwasher” families as opposed to only23% in families who typically hand wash. Asthma was more than four times as common (7.3%) in machine washed families compared to hand washed households (1.7%). Nasal allergies didn’t appear to be as much increased, but were still increased at 12.9% vs. 10.3%. Additionally, the study showed that families who eat fermented foods and farm-fresh produce are less likely to exhibit allergies.

WELLNESS: FOODS THAT TRIGGER HEADACHES most headaches are caused by subluxations or misalignments in the neck but for some headache and migraine sufferers, certain foods can act as triggers. Grapes are low in calories and rich in vitamin C and fiber, so they are a nutritional snack. But they also contain a substance called tyramine, a naturally occurring amino acid that forms from the breakdown of protein in food as it ages. Tyramine can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can trigger headaches in some people. If you experience this reaction, you may want to avoid other trigger foods, such as:• Smoked or cured meats• Aged cheeses• Citrus fruits• Sauerkraut • Soy sauce• Red wine• And certain beers Research shows that tyramine in grapes can have a negative effect on certain antidepressants called MAOIs.  Patients taking these medications should talk to their doctor about their diet. Keeping a food diary to see if you may be sensitive to tyramine-rich foods could also help.

IN THE NEWS:Is your coffee addiction harming your health? Ever wonder what gives you that jolt moments after your first sip? It’s a surge of cortisol and adrenaline. Coffee taps your adrenals to release these stress hormones, so by drinking a cup of java (or a can of soda, as any type of caffeine does this) you are triggering the same physical response your body would have to an imminent danger. While consuming coffee can be great before a job interview or high-stakes presentation, daily use can put you into a chronically high-cortisol state. In fact, a study out of the University of Oklahoma revealed that drinking coffee while under even mild stress causes cortisol levels to rise higher and stay high— long past the stressful event. In general, limit your overall caffeine intake to 100 mg a day (the amount in about one cup of coffee, or three cups of green tea). Exhausted patient after quitting coffee feel so much better afterward. That’s not, by any means, to say that everyone should stop drinking coffee. But knowing how much caffeine you’re drinking and how it’s affecting your body is crucial to knowing whether your daily consumption is healthy.

WELLNESS: NATURL Jell-OGelatin is largely composed of the amino acids glycine and proline, which many people don’t consume in adequate amounts as they are found in the bones, fibrous tissues and organs of animals and as a population, we don’t consume these parts as much anymore. These amino acids are needed not only for proper skin, hair and nail growth, but for optimal immune function and weight regulation! Glycine, which makes up about 1/3 of the amino acids in gelatin powder is anti-inflammatory and evidence is finding that it can help speed wound healing. Glycine in gelatin can also help improve sleep ease and quality. You can purchase organic gelatin at the health food store and make your own flavored Jell-O with fruit juice and sweeten it with Stevia if extra sweetening is necessary, fruit juice is usually sufficient alone.

IN THE NEWS: Hookah smoke contains cancer-causing chemical People who smoke a hookah or inhale secondhand hookah smoke may be breathing in the chemical benzene, a substance that previous research has linked with an increased risk of leukemia, according to a new study. In the study, researchers collected urine samples from 105 hookah smokers before and after they smoked from a hookah, a pipe that’s used to smoke flavored tobacco. They also collected urine samples from 103 people who didn’t smoke hookah tobacco but attended events where they’d be exposed to hookah smoke, to test the effect of secondhand hookah smoke on these people’s bodies. The researchers found that urine levels of a compound called S-phenylmercapturic acid (SPMA), which forms when benzene is broken down in the body, increased more than fourfold in the hookah smokers who smoked at a hookah lounge, and increased almost twofold in the people who smoked hookah tobacco at home.

WELLNESS: Surprising Finding: Gut Microbes Make Dark Chocolate Healthy Dark chocolate, especially raw cacao powder, has pronounced health benefits, provided you eat it in moderation Bacteria in your gut break down and ferment the components in dark chocolate and cacao, turning them into absorbable anti-inflammatory compounds that benefit your health One meta-analysis8 published in 2011 found that those who ate the highest amounts of dark chocolate had a 37 percent reduced risk for cardiovascular disease and a 29 percent lower risk for stroke, compared to those who consumed the least. Besides antioxidants, chocolate also contains other potent plant compounds, including anandamide, named after the Sanskrit word for “bliss,” which is a neurotransmitter in the brain that temporarily blocks feelings of pain and anxiety. Caffeine and theobromine in chocolate have been shown to produce higher levels of physical energy and mental alertness, and there are likely many more healthy chocolate compounds that have yet to be discovered. Best if above 85% cocoa, most labels will tell.

1 Food sources that help with serotonin production – foods high in B-vitamins (brown rice, chicken, corn ,eggs, green leafs, legumes, meat, nuts, peas, sunflower seeds, nutritional yeast), Calcium (almonds, brewer’s yeast, green leafs and cruciferous vegetables, fish with bones, sesame seeds, tofu), Magnesium (green leafs, brown rice, sesame seeds, shrimp, salmon) and Tryptophan (turkey, soy foods, peanuts, almonds).

2 Essential fatty acids necessary for serotonin production are the omega 3’s (fish oils found in mackerel, salmon, sardine, tuna; walnut oil, flax oil) and 6’s (canola oil, chicken, eggs, flax, grape seed oil, safflower oil, sunflower oil, turkey, wheat germ oil) as well as Gamma-Linolenic Acid (black current oil, bluegreen algae, borage oil, evening primrose oil). I’ve also read that most people have an excess of omega 6’s and need to decrease the amount of 6’s in their diet in order for the 3’s to function well. I guess most of us are lacking in 3’s.

3 Long-term stress depletes serotonin levels. Short term stress actually increases serotonin, but after time you get burn-out and it becomes increasingly difficult for the body to produce serotonin. So reduce stress–this can be as simple as adding exercise and meditation to the daily routine or as life changing as choosing to leave a really stressful job.

4-Avoid stimulants because they deplete serotonin over time–this works the same was stress does. We’re talking things like caffeine, refined carbohydrates, chocolate, sugar as well as the heavier stimulants like cold remedies, alcohol, street drugs, diet pills and tobacco.

IN THE NEWS: Antibiotic Use Linked to Childhood ObesityChildren under the age of two who are treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics are more likely to be obese later in childhood, a study epublished in JAMA Pediatrics on September 29 reported. Children who were exposed to antibiotics — especially broad-spectrum antibiotics — as infants had an 11% greater likelihood of becoming obese sometime between the ages of two and five compared to infants who had never taken an antibiotic or who were treated with narrow-spectrum antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxicillin. Infants who took four or more antibiotics, including at least one broad-spectrum antibiotic, had a 16% greater risk of obesity later in childhood. The earlier a child began taking broad-spectrum antibiotics, the greater the risk he or she would become obese between ages three to five.

WELLNESS: DRINKING SODA AGES YOUR IMMUNE CELLS SIMILAR TO THAT OF A DAILY SMOKING HABIT Research published in the American Journal of Public Health claims that drinking soda on a daily basis ages your immune cells to a degree similar to that of a daily smoking habit. To reach this conclusion, the researchers studied the effect of sugary sodas on human telomeres. At the very tip of each arm of the chromosome is where you’ll find the telomere. Your telomeres shorten with time because they cannot replicate completely each time the cell divides. Hence, as you get older, your telomeres get shorter and shorter. They found that people who drank more sugary soda tended to have shorter telomeres. Drinking an 8-ounce daily serving of soda corresponded to 1.9 years of additional aging, and drinking a daily 20-ounce serving was linked to 4.6 more years of aging.
