IN THE NEWS: Breast cancer: Tumor growth fueled by bone marrow cells New research, published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, reveals a novel mechanism that fuels tumor growth in breast cancer and may have a negative impact on a person's outlook. However, the findings might also help scientists develop individually tailored treatments that target breast cancer tumors more precisely. Breast cancer tumors need fibroblast cells from the surrounding breast tissue to grow and spread to other parts of the body. As the scientists note in their study, breast cancer is still "one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women in the Western world," despite the intense research efforts in the medical community and public awareness campaigns. Indeed, in the United States, breast cancer remains the most common cause of cancer-related death among women of all races and ethnicities. In the case of breast cancer, these fibroblasts help cancer cells proliferate by driving inflammation and helping to form blood vessels that deliver oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to the growing tumors. Until now, scientists thought that most of these cells came just from the surrounding breast tissue, but the new research by Prof. Erez and her colleagues shows that many of these fibroblasts actually derive from bone marrow cells. Note: fibroblasts help your body make connective tissue which is important for your skin as well as your joints but in response to cytokines (inflammatory chemistry) they can become problematic for breast cancer. Fibroblasts from bone morrow are implicated in this study and I have found toxicity of the bone marrow can affect cell production and cell health. Nutritional therapy can be very effective for these issues.
WELLNESS: KNOW THE NUTRIENTS YOUR KIDS NEED WITH THIS HELPFUL GUIDE We all wonder if our toddler is getting everything they need to grow up strong, healthy and vegan. We’ve decided to put together a little list to help you get a better understanding of the nutrients that your kids need. Some of the important vitamins and minerals that you should be paying attention to with your little 1-3 year old’s. Calcium Your toddler needs to get about 500 mg per day of calcium. No, that doesn’t mean they need to be drinking cow’s milk. If this isn’t met every day, it’s fine. As long as they average out during the week 500 mg/day. This means that if they only get 450 mg today, tomorrow they can get 550 mg and it will average out. Tofu made with calcium sulfate and fortified plant-based milk is a great source of calcium and is generally well-absorbed. We absorb the calcium from turnips, broccoli, kale, and mustard greens very well because they are low in oxalates. Collard greens are also considered to be a good source of calcium. Legumes, nuts, and seeds have moderate amounts of calcium that become more easily absorbable after soaking in water. Vitamin D Vitamin D is made by the body and activated by the sun (UV B rays). However, daily sun exposure is not practicable, possible, or recommended for everyone. Vegan toddlers that get little to no sun exposure should probably be getting 600 UI of vitamin D2 or vegan D3 per day. There are presentations of them that make their administration very easy, even for the most stubborn two-year-olds. Iron From ages 1-3, the nutrients your kids need as toddlers need to be about 7 mg/day. Great sources of non-heme iron include beans and green vegetables. To help your little one absorb more of what they eat, incorporate these iron-rich foods into their diet together with vitamin C. Vitamin C Toddlers need to get about 15 mg of vitamin C. This is very easy to do because fruits and vegetables are so rich in this nutrient. Deficiencies are very rare and scurvy has not been a common ailment since the 1800s. So while this is one of the nutrients your kids need, it’s easy to stay on top of it.
CHIROPRACTIC: Studies show more people are searching for natural solutions for their health. In 1993 the American Medical Association was a survey of health habits of Americans and found that more Americans visited doctors are practiced natural healthcare and doctors practice drug therapy and surgery. There are many reasons for this shift in healthcare. Some people are concerned about the side effects that drugs have, (2000 deaths per week nearly 1 million injuries per year), some people have a sense of body ecology and don't want to put any artificial substances within their body. Some people have discovered drugs mainly cover-up symptoms and never get to the root of your problem, and are more concerned with maximizing their health than just making some symptoms disappear. I'm sure you have seen either a popular magazine or news program on TV, the benefits of different natural healthcare techniques. Chiropractic is the world's largest natural healthcare profession and specializes in finding the root cause of health problems and helping restore patients to better health through natural methods. At Keefe clinic, these are the principles that we specialize in. We promise you that we will not just cover-up your symptoms and allow the underlying condition time to get worse. FUNNY BONE: A Minnesota couple decided to go to Florida to thaw out during a particularly icy winter. They plan to stay at the same hotel where they spent their honeymoon 20 years earlier. Because of hectic schedules, it was difficult to coordinate their travel plans. So, the husband left Minnesota and arrived at Florida on Thursday, with his wife coming down the following day. The husband checked into the hotel. There was a computer in his room, so he decided to send an email to his wife. However, he accidentally left out one letter in her email address, without realizing his error, sent the email. Meanwhile, somewhere in Houston, a widow had just returned home from her husband's funeral. He was a minister who was called home to glory following a heart attack. The widow decided to check your email expecting messages from relatives and friends. After reading the first message, she screamed and fainted. The widow's son dashed into the room and found his mother on the floor and saw the computer screen which read: Two: My loving wife--Subject: I've arrived --Date: April 6, 2006--I know you're surprised to hear from you. They have computers here now and you are allowed to send emails to your loved ones. I just arrived and have been checked in. I see that everything has been prepared for your arrival tomorrow. Looking forward to seeing you then. Hope your journey is as uneventful as mine was. PS sure is hot down here!!!!

IN THE NEWS: What Are Poppy Seeds Good For? The poppy plant (Papaver somniferum) is infamous for numerous reasons; one of them being that it is the source of opium, a highly addictive narcotic. But despite its notoriety, the poppy plant is also the source of one of the most loved pastry ingredients in the world: poppy seeds. They are well-known for adding a crunch to various confections and desserts. Poppy seed oil, which can be used as both a culinary and a medicinal oil, can be extracted from them as well. Being a product of a relatively infamous plant, the health benefits of poppy seeds have been questioned time and time again. People fear that the seeds may cause the same narcotic effects that other poppy products give. However, poppy seeds actually offer impressive nutritional components that can help your body improve or maintain optimal function. The health benefits of poppy seeds include the following: Aids in the prevention of heart disorders. Each serving of poppy seed contains a considerable amount of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that offer protection against heart disease.8 However, it should be noted that excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids can still cause detrimental effects on the body. A healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is highly recommended to maintain heart health. Supports bone maintenance and development. Poppy seeds contain both iron and phosphorus, minerals essential for the maintenance of both muscles and bones. Prevents constipation and other digestive problems. Poppy seeds have high amounts of dietary fiber, which aids the digestive system in metabolizing and smoothly processing ingested food, preventing constipation and other digestive problems. Enhances brain function. Calcium, iron and magnesium are minerals needed by the body to regulate brain activity and the development of neurons. They also aid in the production of neurotransmitters. Assists in red blood cell production. The abundance of copper and iron in poppy seeds improves red blood cell formation, which helps in the prevention of anemia and other blood-related conditions. Helps deal with sleeplessness. Taking a teaspoon of poppy seed oil before going to bed has been observed to help ease the symptoms of insomnia by promoting relaxation.
WELLNESS: 4 Times Better Than Beets for Increasing Nitric Oxide and Lowering Blood Pressure is a relative of the cruciferous family, which includes radishes, cauliflower and broccoli. Like other members of this family, it contains a number of medicinal nutrients, including cancer-fighting compounds. It’s an excellent source of fiber, vitamins A, C and K, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and manganese. Arugula also provides high levels of protein, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, zinc, copper and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). Arugula contains the highest amounts of nitrates of any vegetable. Your body uses the nitrates in food as raw material to make nitric oxide, which supports healthy blood vessel function, blood pressure and mitochondrial health. Easy to grow, arugula can be grown in your garden to maturity in about 40 days, or harvested after just a week or two of growth, when nutrients are at their peak. Arugula9 is a cool season crop, and can be added to your fall garden plantings. It’s forgiving in that it can tolerate low-fertility soils and frost, and is really easy to care for, although it does best in humus-rich soils with a pH between 6 and 6.8. Seeds germinate best at temperatures between 40 and 55 degrees F. Plant your seeds directly into your garden bed, but avoid planting them in a spot where you just harvested another cabbage family crop.
CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC: EMOTIONAL WELL BEING AND BEATING ADDICTIONS A few years ago, Dr. J.M. Holder researched effects of auricular therapy (a form of acupuncture stimulation to the ear - a technique we have used here at Keefe Clinic since 1980). You may have read about that study in the papers then - it indicated that auricular therapy was the most effective therapy for drug addictions of the 178 government-approved therapies at that time! This study was released in the early 1990's and has started to revolutionize drug addiction programs across the country. Now to his next study: Dr. Holder reasoned that the effects demonstrated in the first study described above dealing with problems with the limbic system could be tied in to the effects that subluxations have on the nervous system. He knew that the limbic system is not just a compartment hidden in the center of the brain, but it also extends down the "dorsal horn" of the spinal column. He decided to test to see what Chiropractic adjustment intervention could do with this particular system of the nervous system. This is what is called the "brain reward cascade” is a scientific model that has the vertebral motor unit as its common denominator which provides an understanding to the neurophysiological mechanism on how the meso-Limbic system expresses a state of well-being. Therefore, a subluxation-free spine is mandatory to express one's greatest potential. At the end of that study, the results were astonishing, even to Dr. Holder. After compiling all the data, he found that the combination of Chiropractic adjustments with counseling therapy approach to addiction and compulsive disorders produced far better results than any other test results for any other government-approved technique now available. His conclusion: for the 180 different addiction disorder techniques that have been tested, Chiropractic now proves to be the most effective, even more effective than the use of auricular therapy found previously so helpful. This means that: Chiropractic care, coupled with proper nutrition, electro-stimulation of points in the ear, and counseling is the best help currently available for individuals who have addictive-compulsive disorders.

No matter how old you are, chances are the #1 way others perceive your age is through the largest organ on your body: skin.
But the extent of showing natural signs of aging is not totally up to fate. In fact, lifestyle factors have a lot of say in the matter.
Stress levels and food choices affect how our genes express themselves. That may sound scary, but it’s actually great news. It means we have significant control over a topic that’s gaining steam in wellness and beauty circles: the accelerated breakdown of collagen.
But first … why is collagen so important when it comes to appearance and skin health? Collagen is actually the most abundant protein in the human body. Seventy percent of skin, hair and nails and nearly 100 percent of connective tissues are collagen. It literally holds you together: from the hairs on your head to every inch of your skin, to your joint comfort and mobility. It even impacts the overall health of your gut including gut integrity.
But here’s the problem...
As we age, our bodies’ natural production of collagen slows dramatically. Over 25? You’re probably losing collagen.
And as collagen levels lower in the body, skin typically starts “looking older,” with less elasticity, vibrancy and hydration. Creaky joints and gut disturbances can also set it. Dropping collagen levels could even mean thinner hair and brittle nails.
- The typical woman can expect to lose about 1 to 2 percent of her body’s collagen every year
- This loss typically begins in the mid-30s
- This rate increases as a person hits 40, 50 and beyond
- By the time a woman reaches 40 years old, she will likely have lost 10 to 20 percent of her total collagen
- A woman in her 50s will have significantly less collagen available than she did in her teens, 20s or 30s
- Collagen production in an 80-year-old is up to 75 percent less than someone 30 or younger
This decrease in collagen can result in less mobility, muscle mass, muscle performance and skin health.
But it’s not just the natural aging process robbing us of our collagen … there are other “thieves” hiding out as modern-day hazards...
10 Surprising Collagen Killers
- Poor sleep
- Excess sugar consumption
- Injuries and unhealthy joints
- High cortisol from emotional stress
- Sun overexposure
- Diet low in antioxidants
- Sitting all day and lack of activity
- Poor gut health
- Nutrient shortfalls of vitamin C and zinc
- Free radicals
Thankfully, natural collagen boosters exist.
The Top 5 Collagen Boosters
- (preferably simmered for 48 hours with bones, along with tendons and ligaments for the most collagen)
- Adaptogenic herbs, including Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Ginseng and Fo-Ti
- Vitamin C-rich foods including kiwi, citrus, camu camu, broccoli, bell peppers and kale.
- Sulfur-rich foods including garlic, onions, egg yolks and cruciferous vegetables
- Antioxidant-rich herbs, spices and foods including turmeric, rosemary, green tea, acai and goji berries
All of the above are great collagen boosters, but I believe none of them compare to the greatest collagen booster in the world: collagen itself that comes from food sources like chicken broth, beef broth, wild fish broth and eggshell membranes.

IN THE NEWS: Dirt Don’t Hurt When it comes to keeping your children healthy, most parents are cautious, if not hypervigilant, over-sterilizing their environments so their children never get dirty and overusing antibacterial soaps. In years past, parents served (and the kids ate) fermented foods containing good bacteria and allowed them to get dirty outside and play with animals on a regular basis, a stark contrast to many kids today. Soil-based organisms (SBOs) may help to stimulate your immune system, reduce inflammation and aid in detoxification. In 2012, the National Institutes of Health's Human Microbiome Project, five years in the making, concluded that humans are essentially superorganisms with microbes that outnumber our own cells 10 to 1. In a fascinating article, The Atlantic reported that some scientists think health care, in response, will begin focusing "less on traditional illnesses and more on treating disorders of the human microbiome" with targeted microbial species and therapeutic foods for gut health. In studies of what is called the hygiene hypothesis, researchers are concluding that organisms like the millions of bacteria, viruses and especially worms that enter the body along with “dirt” spur the development of a healthy immune system. Several continuing studies suggest that worms may help to redirect an immune system that has gone awry and resulted in autoimmune disorders, allergies and asthma. These studies, along with epidemiological observations, seem to explain why immune system disorders like multiple sclerosis, Type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and allergies have risen significantly in the United States and other developed countries.
WELLNESS: Study Reveals Previously Unknown Mechanism Behind Acupuncture’s Ability to Reduce Pain Research suggests acupuncture can be an effective treatment for pain. Clear and robust effects have been found in the treatment of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, and headaches. When properly administered to elicit de qi, acupuncture results in the release of nitric oxide (NO) at the acupuncture site, which in turn encourages the release of natural analgesics in your body. Previous research shows acupuncture deactivates certain parts of your brain, thereby altering your experience of pain.I n a 2012 analysis of 29 published studies involving more than 17,900 participants, researchers concluded that acupuncture has a definite effect in reducing chronic pain — more so than standard pain treatment. Real acupuncture also produced slightly better results than using sham needles, which suggests the benefits of needling are due to more than the placebo effect. Acupuncture can be looked at as point stimulation. Different points affect the body in different ways and knowledge of which line of points to stimulate with a given condition is the basis of acupuncture. When stimulation can be done not only with needles but with electrical current, magnets, tiny pellets or tiny, what look like thumbtacks, called press needles that can be worn for several days. Ask if acupuncture can benefit you.

The Effectiveness of Chiropractic Maintenance Care
The scientific literature is clear that chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial for acute
and chronic low pain
, and other musculoskeletal conditions
. Over 1 million chiropractic adjustments are performed every day around the world and people have benefited and avoided surgery
and risky medications
by seeing chiropractors.
Many people who see chiropractors also do so on a maintenance basis, with the objective of preventing future episodes or exacerbation of their symptoms. Previous research has found that chiropractic can effectively prevent future back pain, but this approach hasn’t been studied extensively.
Now, a Swedish study has given us some new data on the benefits of chiropractic maintenance care.
In this study, the authors started with a group of people who came to see a chiropractor for recurrent or persistent back pain. Of these patients, the researcher took those patients who experienced “definite improvement” from the chiropractic care and entered them into the main part of the study.
These 328 patients were then randomly assigned to two groups. The first group received Maintenance Care (MC): they were put on a chiropractic adjustment schedule that was determined by the chiropractor. The second group was the control group, and their chiropractic care was symptom-guided: the patients would come in for an adjustment when they felt like they needed one. This portion of the study lasted 52 weeks.
The authors describe the philosophy of the two types of care:
“In the MC group, the aim was to schedule patients before substantial pain reoccurred (i.e. controlled by the clinician), while in the control group patients were instructed to call in if and when the pain recurred (patient controlled). If patients in the control group made a new appointment, they were treated at one or several sessions until maximum benefit was reached and were once again instructed to call when in pain. If patients in the MC group experienced a new pain episode prior to the next scheduled visit, they were instructed to call for an earlier appointment and were cared for accordingly until they were ready to be scheduled for preventive visits again. MC visits were scheduled according to the clinicians’ judgement of patient need, but at intervals of no more than three months.”
At the completion of the study, the authors looked at the total number of days of bothersome low back pain in all subjects. The study found:
- The Maintenance Care group had 85.2 days of bothersome pain
- The control group had 98 days of bothersome pain
- The patients in Maintenance Care had a quicker reduction in overall pain
- The MC patients had an average of 6.7 visits over 52 weeks; the control patients had an average of 4.8 visits over 52 weeks
- The only negative side effects experience were local soreness and tiredness.
The authors conclude:
“In patients with recurrent and persistent LBP who responds well to an initial course of manual therapy, MC resulted in a reduction in number of days with bothersome LBP per week, compared with symptom-guided treatment. In total, the MC group had on average 12.8 fewer days with bothersome LBP over 12 months. The effect of the intervention was achieved at the cost of 1.7 additional visits to the chiropractor. For patients with recurrent and persistent LBP who are selected according to evidence-based criteria, MC should be considered.”

Car accidents are most likely the number one cause for chronic disability and/or pain. The August 1999 issue of American Family Physicians, the article notes that 3.5 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. Even minor car accidents can cause changes in the spine that can lead to degenerating joint disease and future pain. Studies indicate that chiropractic care is the best treatment for the vast majority of injuries from a car accident. The main reason that chiropractic patients have less problems in the future and recover better from their present complaints is because of the focus in chiropractic care.
The injuries to the spine will cause slight misalignments in the joints of the neck and back. It's these misalignments that produce the majority of symptoms, not pulled muscles. Chiropractic care and analysis focuses on the detection and correction of spinal subluxations. Subluxation is the term for misalignments that develop in the spine. These misalignments can stay there for years unless they are corrected by chiropractic adjustments. The average patient after a car accident that visit an emergency room usually are only given pain pills and muscle relaxers. This of course allows the misalignments to remain. It's this focus on just the symptoms of the injury that leave a high percent of car accident victims with ongoing disability, pain and degenerating joint disease.
One study showed problems five or more years after the accident. Symptomatic recovery occurred in 57 per cent of the 146 patients, while degenerative changes developed after the injury in 39 per cent. Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, 1974;56:1675-1682.

Scientific Automobile Accident Reconstruction treatise by Barzeley; Published by Mathew Bender 1984; Chapter 46:
" The simple fact remains: neck injuries do occur as a result of rear-end automobile accidents. 46-2
" Whiplash injuries may be present as a result of automobile accidents, even though no physical, radiological or other objective evidence of injury can be found. 46-3
" Usually the onset of symptoms occurs from 12 to 24 hours afterward. Sometimes there may be as much as weeks or even months delay between the automobile accident and the experience of symptoms. 46-5
" Most people just don't expect injuries to occur when the impact velocity has been low and damage to the vehicles has not been great. It is common sense to expect that the severity of the injuries should be in proportion to the severity of the collision. However, whiplash injuries most frequently result from relatively minor automobile accidents without major damage done to the vehicles. 46-6
" Rear-end collisions produce a sudden forceful hyperextension of the neck which is immediately followed by recoil into neck flexion. 46-8
" Probably most of the injuries result from the sudden traumatic snapping of the neck when the acceleration of the head suddenly shifts directions. 46-10
In most cases you're better off in the long-term to break a bone than to damage a joint. When you damage a joint, you primarily damage the connective tissue in the joint which can leave that joint unstable for the rest of your life. When you break a bone, the bone heals stronger than it was before. Connective tissue has a history of poor healing. By bringing that joint back to its proper alignment, you allow the maximum healing to the soft tissue or connective tissue in that joint. And by maintaining that alignment over the long-term, you assure maximum results. Out of 50 or so outcome studies which have been published in the past 40 years. They nearly unanimously presented 30 to 50 percent of whiplash victims are left with some form of residual pain or dysfunction.
Our treatment goals are not only to make you feel better now, but to try to assure that 10 years from now your injuries will not be bothering you.

IN THE NEWS: HORSERADISH CONTAINS POWERFUL CANCER-FIGHTING COMPOUNDS Horseradish is a key flavor in prepared foods such as potato salad, sandwiches and sauces. It can add zest to dips and vegetable dishes. However, research out of the University of Illinois has found eating horseradish can actually help you to inhibit cancer cell growth. How does it work? This is due to its high content of glucosinolates, which are enzymes known to have cancer-fighting properties. Glucosinolates assist the body in detoxifying – at the cellular level – and eliminating harmful free radicals. While broccoli (which is in the same family as horseradish) is known for its glucosinolate content, horseradish has 10 times the amount. Horseradish is pretty pungent, so (fortunately) a little goes a long way both in terms of flavor and cancer-fighting benefits. Horseradish can fight cancer so well due to its detoxification ability as well as its high absorption rate; around 90 percent of this compound is effectively absorbed after ingestion. Once in the body, glucosinolates are broken down into powerful derivatives called indoles and isothiocyanates – which help us avoid cancer cell growth. In addition to its cancer-fighting properties, horseradish contains key nutrients like calcium, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and vitamin C. Horseradish root is most commonly ground into a spice and prepared as a condiment. However, it has also been used medicinally for over 3,000 years. Horseradish has been used to treat asthma, colds, toothache, colic, and scurvy (because of its vitamin C content.) Horseradish poultices relieve pain through topical application, and it has even been infused into milk for use in skin care. Important to note: Horseradish offers potent antimicrobial and antibiotic properties.
WELLNESS: IQ SCORES ARE DROPPING EVERY GENERATION SINCE THE 1970’S In a bit of unwelcome news, scientists have found that humans are becoming less intelligent. In a study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a pair of Norwegian researchers studied test results from over 730,000 young men and found that IQ scores were dropping – to the tune of seven points per generation. A recent British study – which demonstrated that IQ scores have fallen by 2.5 to 4.3 points every decade since the end of World War II – helps to corroborate the results of the Norwegian research. These findings are in sharp contrast to results from the first half of the twentieth century when IQ scores rose steadily. (Could the barrage of pesticides and environmental toxins introduced during the second half of the century be taking their toll on human brain function? Many natural health experts think so.) Fact: both animal and human studies have shown that fluoride impairs learning and memory. Researchers at the Berkeley School of Public Health at the University of California found that prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides – such as chlorpyrifos and diazinon – is associated with lower intelligence scores in seven-year-olds. Children with high lead levels can exhibit lower IQ scores and learning disabilities, along with behavioral problems such as hyperactivity, inability to maintain attention and aggression. The EPA notes that an estimated 1.7 million children are currently affected by lead toxicity in the United States alone – almost 900,000 of them under the age of six. According to a new study, the “brain drain” from exposure to mercury is hitting America in the pocketbook. According to a study conducted at Ashland University, aluminum cookware made in developing countries can contain dangerous amounts of lead and cadmium – along with unhealthy amounts of aluminum. NOTE: the need to regularly detox your system is important for your health and your brain.
CHIROPRACTIC: SUPPORT FOR YOUR 3 ARCHES AND YOU’RE BACK AT THE SAME TIME The feet are the foundation of the body. They provide the necessary stability to perform daily activities by supporting the weight of the entire body using a strong, 3-arched bond called the plantar vault. The plantar vault provides numerous benefits: Balances to the body, propels us forward, safely absorbs heel-strike shock, Adapts to walking and running stresses. Over time, one or more of your arches will weaken due to gravitational pressure. This process is completely natural, but can be expedited by injuries, a short leg, improper posture and naturally weak ligaments and tendons. Once an arch or multiple arches have weakened, the weight of the body will shift away from the weakened arch and start to apply pressure and stress to the other arches, causing pain and other symptoms throughout the body. A Foot Levelers custom orthotic is individually designed for your feet – helping achieve a balanced foundation and stabilized pelvis. Our custom orthotics are handmade for your unique feet based on a casts, and your doctor’s exam. Over-the-counter insoles may initially cost less, but they only support one arch in your foot. When only one arch is being supported, it may not maintain the structure of your plantar vault, and problems can start in other parts of your body. In fact, “over-supporting” just one arch of the foot may actually cause pain and symptoms, not relieve them. Do you experience pain daily? Individually designed Foot Levelers custom orthotics with 3-arch support, however, can. Imbalances in the feet can lead to knee rotation, pelvic tilt and shoulder drop. These imbalances in the body can be caused by pronation and supination of the foot. These instabilities can lead to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, knee pain, hip pain, back pain, and neck pain. A properly aligned body will have symmetrical feet, level knees, pelvis and shoulders. Wearing Custom Orthotics may help alleviate imbalances and conditions caused by those imbalances. A conclusive new study, “Shoe Orthotics for the Treatment of Chronic Low Back Pain: A Randomized Controlled Trial” published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation shows that Foot Levelers custom orthotics, particularly in combination with Chiropractic care, significantly reduce Low Back Pain (LBP).

IN THE NEWS: Which Foods Are Best for Your Heart Health? Many vegetables contain naturally occurring nitrates, which your body transforms into nitric oxide (NO), a soluble gas continually produced from the amino acid L-arginine inside your cells. nitric oxide supports healthy endothelial function and protects your mitochondria. Acting as a potent vasodilator, NO also relaxes and widens your blood vessels, improving blood flow and reducing blood pressure. As noted in research3 presented by Dr. Michael Greger above, a diet high in nitrate is a natural strategy recommended for the treatment of prehypertension and hypertension (high blood pressure), "and to protect individuals at risk of adverse vascular events," i.e., heart attacks. Indeed, raw beets — which are high in nitrates — have been shown to lower blood pressure by an average of four to five points within a matter of hours. Some studies have shown a glass of beet juice can lower systolic blood pressure by more than eight points — far more than most blood pressure medications. In conventional medicine, nitrates are used to treat angina and congestive heart failure, and research shows a glass of beetroot juice has the same effect as prescription nitrates. Red beets are well-known for their high nitrate content, but leafy greens contain even more nitrates per serving; arugula contains the highest amounts, followed by rhubarb.
WELLNESS: Sugar During Pregnancy Linked to Allergies Allergies are a sign your body’s immune system is working overtime; consuming sugar during pregnancy may increase your child’s risk of developing allergies and asthma. Sugar has a profound effect on the health of your growing baby and may increase your own risk of obesity, metabolic syndrome, hypertension and brain-related disorders as well. Researchers at Queen Mary University of London evaluated survey data from nearly 9,000 mother-child pairs in the ongoing Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children, tracking the health of families with children born between April 1, 1991, and December 31, 1992.4 Lead author Annabelle Bedard, Ph.D., commented on what triggered the researchers to evaluate the association between sugar and allergies: "The dramatic 'epidemic' of asthma and allergies in the West in the last 50 years is still largely unexplained — one potential culprit is a change in diet. Intake of free sugar and high fructose corn syrup has increased substantially over this period. We know that the prenatal period may be crucial for determining risk of asthma and allergies in childhood and recent trials have confirmed that maternal diet in pregnancy is important." Optimizing your vitamin D level during pregnancy may reduce your child’s risk for developing asthma and support your child’s immune system.
CHIROPRACTIC: Low back problems that are disc related Low back pain is the number one health problem in the United States, but the good news is chiropractic is the number one effective treatment based on government studies. When vertebrae, in the back, start to lose their alignment, the connective tissue and fluid pad (discs) between the vertebras come under stress. Through repetitive trauma from normal daily activities, this stress can lead to bulging and sometimes tearing of fibers within the disk. As this damage increases the gelatinous material called the nucleus pulposus can migrate to the edge of the disc and sometimes herniated through the disc. The good news is most disc problems can be adequately resolved through chiropractic adjustments, exercise, and nutritional therapy. That's right, discs need nutrition just like every other structure in your body. With a combination of connective tissue support, enzymes to treat inflammation and swelling and chiropractic adjustments most disk problems can be resolved without surgery. There is a classic disc shift seen in patients with lumbar disc disorders. When the patient tries to stand up straight, their hips are usually shifted to one side. If you or someone you know suffers from severe low back pain, they need chiropractic care to resolve the disk problem.

IN THE NEWS: Researchers Find Grave Downside to Sleeping More Than 8 Hours a Day It’s no secret that chronic sleep deprivation is taking its toll on America’s health, but a new study suggests that those who get more than ample sleep aren’t that safe either. Seemingly counterintuitive results reported in the Journal of the American Heart Association on Wednesday suggest that oversleeping might put you at higher risk for certain heart conditions. The study, conducted at Keele University, was a systematic review and meta-analysis of 74 existing studies — collectively covering three million patients — that investigated how sleep hours impacted overall health. Lead author and clinical lecturer in cardiology Chun Shing Kwok, Ph.D. and his team noted a link between consistently sleeping more than eight hours and the risk of all-cause mortality (dying of anything) and the risk of cardiovascular conditions. Those who consistently slept for ten hours had a 30 percent increase in their risk of all-cause mortality and a 49 percent increase in the risk of cardiovascular-related death, the team writes. “Sleep is complex and related to many factors such as lifestyle, occupation, caring needs for children and relatives as well as physical illness,” he adds. “Too much sleep may be related to conditions like obstructive sleep apnea and hypothyroidism.” Instead, sleeping longer than ten hours might be indicative of other problems that might give cardiologists concern, adds Brooke Aggarwal, Ph.D., a behavioral scientist and clinical health education specialist in the Division of Cardiology at Columbia University Medical Center who was not involved in the study. “Scientists are not totally sure if sleeping too much is a risk to health itself, or if it is simply a marker of increased risk, she tells Inverse.
WELLNESS: Surprising truth about exercise and better brain health When it comes to the physical and mental benefits of exercise, research has focused on the effects of consistent, long-term exercise routines. But an intriguing review shows that a single episode of exercising can offer substantial and immediate brain health dividends that promote mental clarity and improve cognition. (how cool is that?!) This review also highlighted results from steady exercise (over time) – with promising implications for preventing cognitive decline and protecting against Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. A wide range of mental functions are benefited, including attention, working memory, problem solving, cognitive flexibility, verbal fluency, decision making and inhibitory control. Mental processing speed also increases. And, positive effects from a single exercise session can last for up to two hours post-workout. Also (no surprise here), researchers reported that acute exercise had the effect of enhancing mood and decreasing stress. Acute exercise triggers neurochemical changes that affect large areas of the brain, impacting emotional states and relieving symptoms associated with mood and psychological disorders – such as depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, schizophrenia and more. In one study, 30 minutes of walking and running at 60 to 70 percent of VO2 max improved mood and cognition – results that were duplicated time and again by other studies. It’s no wonder that scientists say: ‘regular exercise is as effective as antidepressant medication in treating depression.’ No matter which type of exercise you choose, there’s one undeniable fact, physical activity is a potent therapeutic tool to address depression, alleviate anxiety and avoid significant cognitive decline.
CHIROPRACTIC: Research results: For Acute and Chronic Pain In a Randomized controlled trial, 183 patients with neck pain were randomly allocated to manual therapy (spinal mobilization), physiotherapy (mainly exercise) or general practitioner care (counseling, education and drugs) in a 52-week study. The clinical outcomes measures showed that manual therapy (chiropractic care) resulted in faster recovery than physiotherapy and general practitioner care. Moreover, the total costs of the manual therapy-treated patients were about one-third of the costs of physiotherapy or general practitioner care. Korthals-de Bos et al (2003), British Medical Journal “Patients with chronic low-back pain treated by chiropractors showed greater improvement and satisfaction at one month than patients treated by family physicians. Satisfaction scores were higher for chiropractic patients. A higher proportion of chiropractic patients (56 percent vs. 13 percent) reported that their low-back pain was better or much better, whereas nearly one-third of medical patients reported their low-back pain was worse or much worse.” Nyiendo et al (2000), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics "Reduced odds of surgery were observed for...those whose first provider was a chiropractor. 42.7% of workers [with back injuries] who first saw a surgeon had surgery, in contrast to only 1.5% of those who saw a chiropractor." Keeney et al (2012), Spine “Acute and chronic chiropractic patients experienced better outcomes in pain, functional disability, and patient satisfaction; clinically important differences in pain and disability improvement were found for chronic patients.” “Cervical spine manipulation was associated with significant improvement in headache outcomes in trials involving patients with neck pain and/or neck dysfunction and headache.” McCrory, Penzlen, Hasselblad, Gray (2001), Duke Evidence Report “The results of this study show that spinal manipulative therapy is an effective treatment for tension headaches. . . Four weeks after cessation of treatment . . . the patients who received spinal manipulative therapy experienced a sustained therapeutic benefit in all major outcomes in contrast to the patients that received amitriptyline therapy, who reverted to baseline values.” Boline et al. (1995), Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics In a study funded by NIH’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine to test the effectiveness of different approaches for treating mechanical neck pain, 272 participants were divided into three groups that received either spinal manipulative therapy (SMT) from a doctor of chiropractic (DC), pain medication (over-the-counter pain relievers, narcotics and muscle relaxants) or exercise recommendations. After 12 weeks, about 57 percent of those who met with DCs and 48 percent who exercised reported at least a 75 percent reduction in pain, compared to 33 percent of the people in the medication group. After one year, approximately 53 percent of the drug-free groups continued to report at least a 75 percent reduction in pain; compared to just 38 percent pain reduction among those who took medication. IN THE NEWS: Even More Evidence for the Link Between Alzheimer’s and Herpes In 1907, the German psychiatrist Alois Alzheimer published a description of a 50-year-old woman who suffered from memory problems, hallucinations, and delusions. In the woman’s brain, Alzheimer noticed unusual lumps, or “plaques,” which “were caused by the deposition of an unusual substance.” Eight decades later, the mystery substance was finally identified as a protein called amyloid beta. Though small, it can accumulate in large clusters that are somehow toxic to neurons. Those harmful plaques are one of the hallmarks of the disease that bears Alzheimer’s name. What amyloid beta normally does in the brain isn’t clear. Robert Moir, a neurologist at the MassGeneral Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease, says that many researchers have cast it as a villainous molecule with no beneficial function. “It’s just bad, bad, bad,” he says. “But it has become increasingly obvious that this isn’t true.” Moir thinks that amyloid beta has a more heroic role, as a foot soldier of our immune system. It protects neurons from infectious microbes—and from herpes viruses, in particular. William Eimer, a member of Moir’s team, demonstrated this protection by injecting the common herpes virus HSV–1 into the brains of two kinds of mice: normal rodents and ones that were genetically engineered to produce high levels of amyloid beta in their brains. The latter were better at resisting the viruses. Eimer then got similar results when he injected a different herpes virus, HHV–6, into human cells growing in a dish. Amyloid beta protects against these viruses by latching onto them in large numbers, imprisoning them in self-assembling cages. That’s typically a good thing, but Moir argues that if the process goes on for too long, it builds up to the problematic plaques of Alzheimer’s. According to him, amyloid beta is still at the heart of the Alzheimer’s story, but it isn’t the villain. “In our model, Alzheimer’s is caused by amyloid beta’s reaction to something else, and most likely some kind of infection” like herpes, he says. NOTE: Ask about nutrition for the immune system.
WELLNESS: Why Macadamias, Pecans and Walnuts Should Be on Your Shopping List Because macadamia nuts and pecans have high fat and low protein and carb levels, they are superior choices, particularly if you eat a ketogenic diet. Walnuts, despite having a slightly higher protein and carb content, are also an excellent choice mainly because new research suggests eating them may reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. You may not realize most nuts labeled as roasted have actually been fried in vegetable oil, often at high temperatures, putting you at risk of exposure to acrylamide, a possible carcinogen. When choosing nuts, look for high-quality nuts that are certified organic and presented in raw form. Avoid roasted or pasteurized nuts, as well as nuts coated in sugar or covered in milk chocolate. Contrary to what you may think, only dry-roasted nuts are truly roasted. Most nuts labeled and sold as roasted are actually fried in vegetable oil. You can tell this because the ingredient label will identify the type of oil used for frying. This practice is ill-advised for a few reasons:Most vegetable oils are unhealthy and contain an overabundance of omega-6 fats. In addition, some vegetable oils used to fry nuts, such as canola oil, are genetically engineered (GE). Roasting raises the potential for the formation of a possible carcinogen called acrylamide, which results from a chemical reaction between sugars in certain foods and an amino acid called asparagine. Acrylamide, which is best known as the “browning” on chips and french fries, has the potential to form on certain nuts when they are fried or roasted at temperatures above 250 degrees F (121 degrees C) for long cooking times. Vegetable oils heated to high temperatures can easily oxidize, promoting the formation of disease-causing free radicals. Nuts that oxidize can also become rancid and attract fungal mycotoxins. You can identify rancid nuts by a musty, stale or spoiled smell. Nuts roasted at high temperatures may contain lower amounts of antioxidants, vitamins and other nutrients.
CHIROPRACTIC: HELPING TMJ TMJ is the shortened name for temporomandibular joint disorders. It describes a group of disorders in which the connecting point between the jaw and the skull becomes painful and swollen. The cause of the disorder can vary widely, and in some instances, no known cause is ever discovered. What are the Symptoms? Symptoms of TMJ can vary widely from person to person, but some of the more typical problems are fairly common among most sufferers. These symptoms might include pain in the jaw, trouble chewing or talking, headaches, and neck pain. In some cases, the patient may also experience a bit of dizziness. Since other ailments can cause similar problems, it’s important to be seen by a professional. How Can a Chiropractor Help? Chiropractors may help with TMJ by alleviating tension and dysfunction in the spine. As chiropractors alleviate this dysfunction, it reduces the pressure on various nerves, which then alleviates pain associated with TMJ.

It's really difficult for all of us to see when we are being programmed or manipulated through advertisement/propaganda. But pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars on conditioning the population to choose its products over other methods of treatment. And sometimes we’re in an automatic mode when we decide our choice in healthcare. This can be a problem for a number of reasons. The first thing to consider is if you are deciding to utilize a drug as your first option you might not understand the dangers of that approach.
Besides the over 2000 deaths per week due to the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and the fact that medical care is a number one cause for death in the United States based on CDC statistics, there are other reasons to think twice about drugs being your first approach. Simply put drugs don't heal, drugs alter your perception of the condition. Let's take headaches, for example, most headaches are caused by misalignments in the upper neck (muscle tension) other causes could be toxicity problems, allergies, low blood sugar or hormonal problems. Which of these do you think an aspirin fixes? Did you know aspirin causes bleeding in the stomach, Excess Stomach Acid Secretion, Stomach Cramps, Blood coming from Anus, Decreased White Blood Cells? This is just a partial list of potential side effects. Again the aspirin doesn't treat any of the underlying causes for your condition.
Let's say your headaches were related to hormonal imbalances because of a developing ovarian cyst. You keep treating the headaches with an aspirin and your ovarian cyst keeps getting worse to the point that it might burst. Wouldn't it have been nice if the physician you went to wanted to understand the source of your headaches? But a common problem is if you're a physician and have powerful drugs that can mask symptoms then when a patient presents with certain symptoms you are just gonna write a prescription and consider it appropriate care.
As a chiropractic physician, we don't mask symptoms with drugs, we have to figure out why the symptom is there. Just to classify a headache is a tension headache or a migraine headache and then give the latest masking drug the pharmaceutical company has recommended, in my opinion, is not proper healthcare. Proper healthcare tries to determine the underlying cause for the condition and correct the cause. I'm not saying that can be done 100% of the time because science does not understand the body fully, I am saying that most the time it can be. The underlying cause of allergies is not an antihistamine deficiency it's an inappropriate functioning immune system. When you correct the immune system you correct the allergies. Acid reflux is not an antacid deficiency it is an imbalance somewhere within the digestive system. It needs to be found and corrected which might include changing your diet.
Back pain is not a muscle relaxer or anti-inflammatory deficiency disease. When you just treat the symptoms you allow the condition time to get worse. This is one of the reasons that chronic diseases are such a high prevalence in our society. When you chronically just treat symptoms over a lifetime you end up with a basket full of chronic conditions. And this is why many people live their last 10 or 15 years of life in a nursing home or a wheelchair suffering from multiple health problems. If you don't want to end up there you have to change the choices you make with your body. The fact is most drug therapy is inappropriate. Let me make this clear there is a time for drugs and there is a time for surgeries but they should be the last approach. Unfortunately, when you let certain conditions develop to the point of no return you eliminate a number of your options to get well.
Natural healthcare focuses on health, not disease. Disease care has led to horrible health statistics for countries that focus their attention there. When a type II diabetic is taking one, two or three different medications to try to control their blood sugar they are in fact shortening their lifespan and making chronic disease more likely. The sad thing is the vast majority of type II diabetics can be drug-free and healthy by some simple dietary and nutritional approaches. Lowering your blood sugar with drugs to force the sugar out of the body is not the same as correcting the blood sugar problem. Find the cause, correct the cause.
It is true that antibiotics can help clear acne in patients who suffer from it but it's also true that antibiotics will wreck havoc on your digestive tract and weaken your immune system. Is acne an antibiotic deficiency disease? The skin is just the expression of the health of the body. Acne has to do with body ecology, hormonal balance and sometimes food allergies. The chances are the use of antibiotics will make each of these issues worse. And has anybody heard of superbug infections? The overuse of antibiotics is the number one cause of death from superbug infections that have been growing every year for the past 25 years. Is there a place for antibiotics? There is but it's very rare. There are so many natural immune boosting techniques in natural healthcare that well over 90% of my patients never require any antibiotics in their life as long as they are following the approaches we recommend. Sure there are exceptions to every rule but in our society, the exception is the rule.
Do you want to be healthy? Drugs are not going to get you there. Drugs could save your life but the same drugs that saved your life could end your life if you keep taking them. Drugs are toxic, drugs are dangerous. If you want to be healthy then you have to practice a healthy lifestyle. Did you know your nervous system controlled and coordinated everything that happens in your body? That's why we focus on spinal health to maintain a proper nervous system function. That is one of the five laws of health that we encourage patients to follow. The second law would be the law of diet. Do you really believe you could eat Twinkies all day and stay healthy? Of course not. But just like the big Pharma, big food has programmed you into digging your own grave with your fork. You have to eat a diet that's consistent with your genetic makeup and actually has real food in it. Eating right is really not that hard with a little direction you can increase your energy levels, strengthen your cardiovascular systems and maintain proper blood sugar levels very easily. The third law is exercise. You don't have to run marathons, in fact, you can over-exercise to your detriment. Exercise is also related to your genetic makeup. Some people doing the wrong type of exercise can actually hurt themselves. People who have some type of moderate, regular exercise will be healthier than those who don't. Law four is a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Life can be hard you need to have coping skills in order to be successful. Spiritual disciplines have been shown by research to make us healthier and to allow us to live a longer life. In the fifth law is rest and relaxation.
None of these laws are really difficult to follow you just need to find yourself in a culture that encourages these. The pharmaceutical approach is not that culture. As nice as it is to have a fire department it's also a lot better if you never have to call them. And in most circumstances with a little prudence, those disasters can be avoided. One of the best ways to find yourself in the culture of better health is to choose natural healthcare. Making natural healthcare your first choice can prevent a number of disasters in your life and your families health. You still might be referred to a medical specialist from time to time but if your primary care is a physician in the natural healthcare field your outcomes would be greatly improved.
Are you locked in the matrix? Choose natural healthcare and choose a better life.
The influence of pelvic adjustment on the posture of female university students.
a. The authors looked at changes in posture in female university students who received pelvic adjustments using the Gonstead Technique.
b. The pelvis positioning “…is the most important element that determines the sagittal alignment and posture of the body and abnormal posture triggers diverse problems, including flat-back syndrome, cervical kyphosis, local organ ailments such as uterine prolapse and gastric herniation.”
c. The subjects were female university students and they were divided into a group that received the adjustments and a control group that did stretching only.
d. A thrust was made for a posterior inferior innominate with the patient prone.
e. The adjustments were made 3 to 5 times by a physical therapist. (emphasis ours)
f. A Back Mapper was used to make the postural measurements.
g. The stretching group showed no significant changes, but the adjustment group showed significant changes in trunk imbalance, pelvic position, pelvic torsion, and position of the scapulae.
Adjustments improved posture.
Global rotation is the sum of all the relative rotations so if you changed one or more relative rotations you would tend to affect the global rotation to some degree. In other words, if you change the alignment of boney structures then you will tend to affect the posture. But why do I say “tend to”? Because, I want you to understand that this subject is more complex than simply improving the alignment of a single segment and then automatically assuming that global alignment will also improve. Likewise, it is possible for patients to demonstrate reasonably healthy global posture and still exhibit small, single segment problems (misalignment, dysfunctional motion, etc). You need both good relative and good global alignment. But then you regularly read Science in Brief so you already had that figured out.

IN THE NEWS: Video games: risky or beneficial Playing video games may lead to improvements in areas of attention, cognitive control and workload, visuospatial skills and more. Video games may alter the reward-processing areas of your brain, potentially leading to addiction, and may desensitize players to violence. If you play video games on your TV or computer at night, be sure to take steps to protect yourself from exposure to blue light from the screen (such as wearing blue-blocking glasses after sundown). Addicted to video games: At an addiction treatment center in Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, teenagers and young adults begin detox by admitting they are powerless over their addiction. But these addicts aren't hooked on drugs or alcohol. They are going cold turkey to break their dependence on video games. Keith Bakker, director of Smith & Jones Addiction Consultants, tells WebMD he created the new program in response to a growing problem among young men and boys. "The more we looked at it, the more we saw [gaming] was taking over the lives of kids." Detox for video game addiction may sound like a stretch, but addiction experts say the concept makes sense. "I was surprised we didn't think of it here in America," says Kimberly Young, PsyD, clinical director of the Center for On-Line Addiction and author of Caught in the Net: How to Recognize the Signs of Internet Addiction -- and a Winning Strategy for Recovery. "I've had so many parents call me over the last year or two, particularly about the role-playing games online. I see it getting worse as the opportunity to game grows - for example, cell phone gaming." But can a game truly become an addiction? Absolutely, Young tells WebMD. "It's a clinical impulse control disorder," an addiction in the same sense as compulsive gambling.

WELLNESS: “The Power of Bioavailable B Vitamins – What Could Your Life Look Like If You Had More?” Low levels of B vitamins are becoming more commonplace just as researchers discover exciting new benefits for this valuable family of nutrients. For the sake of your body and brain, I suggest you take advantage of their new findings and, above all, make sure you’re not making these eating and supplement mistakes. Researchers are discovering potential benefits of the family of B vitamins that are much greater than we ever imagined. Keep in mind; you don’t need to have a flat-out deficiency in any of these vitamins. Surprisingly, many of the subjects in the studies you’re going to hear about didn’t. They just had lower levels. Increasing their intake of these vitamins made all the difference for these study subjects. Going from low or even routinely recommended minimal levels to optimal levels allowed them to benefit in significant ways! 13 Signs You May Be Low in B Vitamins: Inability to sleep well, Fatigue and apathy, Mental “fog,” confusion, and forgetfulness, Mood swings and irritability, Gastrointestinal symptoms, Joint or muscle discomfort, Muscle weakness, Loss of muscle mass, Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes, Frequent bruising, Headaches, Irritability, Dry, cracking skin. Because the vitamin B complex is a group of eight major B vitamins that work together, you can impact their synergy just by running low on one. For example, many of the B complex vitamins are needed for healthy skin. If you’re low in one or two, that can affect the actions of the others. Fresh, whole foods like meat, fish, dairy, and whole grains provide ample supplies of B vitamins. Yet once you process those foods, you jeopardize the integrity of the B vitamins as many are sensitive to heat, light, air, and long storage times. As we’ve just seen, these water-soluble nutrients are required for your healthy normal: Brain and nervous system function, Growth and development, Immune function, Energy production, Cell metabolism, Organ and tissue health, Muscle, skin, and eye health, Appetite and digestion. The B vitamins act as coenzymes and play a key role in the metabolism of carbohydrate, protein, and fat.
CHIROPRACTIC: INNATE INTELLIGENCE Healing comes from within. The wisdom that made your body can heal your body. Chiropractic science teaches that the body has an inborn ability to heal itself. In chiropractic, we call this innate intelligence. When you cut your finger in most cases all you need to do is clean the cut and the body will do the rest. When you break a bone if it is not severely dislocated the body can pull the bone back together and make it stronger than it was before the break. As a chiropractic physician, I rely on your body’s inborn intelligence to produce the results from care. My job is to remove the interference and let innate intelligence do the rest. Yes, we have to give innate the proper building blocks through proper diet and nutrition plus we need to stop overloading the body with toxic chemicals and depleted nutrients like refined carbohydrates or junk food. Exercise, oxygen, clean water, stress reduction and proper rest are all components necessary for good health. Drugs cannot give you healthy tissue cells, vitamins cannot give you healthy tissue cells without innate intelligence doing its job. That's why the adjustment is so important. The doctor inside needs to have full access to every part of your body in order to maintain good health. Nerve pressure interferes with the innate intelligence's ability to restore health. Who do you know who would benefit from chiropractic care? Chiropractic releases health from within, not from a pill.

In fact, blueberries and strawberries (in particular) contribute dramatically to this area of health, lowering the risk of a heart attack. For the study, health data came from 93,600 women who had signed up for the Nurses’ Health Study from ages 25 to 42. Over 18 years, they gave information regarding their diet. Looking at relatively young women at low risk of heart attack allowed the researchers to see many heart attack risk factors more clearly. The evidence is clear: Reduce heart attack risk up to 34 percent by eating blueberries and strawberries. The researchers determined women who ate the least strawberries and blueberries were at a higher risk for having a heart attack. Those who ate the highest amounts of these fruits were a full 34 percent less likely to suffer a heart attack.
WELLNESS: How to Get Rid of a Cough Contrary to what many people believe, a cough is not a disease in and of itself – rather, it’s a symptom, a warning sign that your body gives out to let you know that there’s something wrong with your health, and that there’s an underlying condition that you need to take care of. For example, a cough can present itself with the common cold and other types of respiratory illness. It may manifest if you have gastrointestinal problems like GERD, or may be triggered by prescription medications. In some cases, it may be a sign of a severe health disorder, such as if you’re coughing up blood – a condition called hemoptysis, which can be indicative of tuberculosis, bronchitis or even lung cancer. So what you do with a simple cough? A study found that raw honey works just as well as dextromethorphan, an ingredient used in OTC drugs, to soothe cough triggered by upper respiratory tract infections, particularly in children. Drinking enough water helps thin out mucus. It also keeps mucous membranes moist, which may reduce the need to cough. NOTE: If you have signs or symptoms of getting sick call for an appointment and try a natural approach first. There are no safe drugs plus they don't get the roots of the problem.
CHIROPRACTIC: Is chiropractic your first choice in healthcare? We have said for many years that if you have a health challenge you should consider chiropractic/natural healthcare first, drug second and surgery last. You might have to think about this for a while to understand the wisdom. Here is a case history that demonstrates some of the wisdom of this recommendation. The patient was a female in her mid-20s and she recently had a child but was unable to hold it because of seizure activity. She was involved in a serious car accident where she was almost thrown through the windshield of the car. She had significant head trauma which led to seizures. She was put on seizure medication which controled them for a period of time but then she started having breakthrough seizures which made it dangerous for her to hold her child without supervision. Her doctor informed her if they raised the level of her medication it could be fatal. It is common that our patients are referred to us by other patients which is how she came to make an appointment. She presented with not only seizures but of course she had neck and back pain from the accident, she suffered from significant headaches since the accident, she had knee pain which they were considering surgery for and she also complained of pain over her last remaining ovary. Her other ovary was removed because of pain they could not control. Our exam indicated she had subluxations (spinal misalignments) and other signs of trauma that appeared in her x-rays and physical exam. She began treatment and soon noticed her seizure activity was diminishing, within time she was seizure free and was excited she could hold her baby again. Her headaches became a thing of the past along with her knee pain (no surgery necessary) and then what excited her the most is she was no longer having pain over her last remaining ovary. This was important because she wanted to have more children. I see this type of story repeated hundreds of times in my practice. Patients come in with conditions no one else can help them with and through chiropractic adjustments, nutritional therapy and other lifestyle changes their bodies get well. Who do you know who would benefit from chiropractic? Maybe you're not sure if their condition will but send them to us anyway we would be the first to tell them if we couldn't help them. Only a chiropractic physician knows if chiropractic could help.

DIET: 43 Times More Vitamin C than an Orange, a Weapon Against the Flu Camu camu (Myrciaria dubia) is a small orange-red fruit, similar in size to that of a large cherry, with a tart flavor; the camu camu tree grows primarily in South America. Camu camu contains exceptionally high amounts of vitamin C — anywhere from 1,882 to 2,280 milligrams per 100 grams of fresh fruit. For comparison, acerola cherries typically contain around 1,678 mg of vitamin C per 100 grams. Vitamin C is an important immune booster and helps defend against viral attacks and inflammation. It’s also used by your body for wound healing, repairing and maintaining the health of your bones and teeth. Camu camu also contains a number of other valuable nutrients, including manganese, copper, carotenoids, flavonoids, essential amino acids (including valine, serine and leucine), gallic and ellagic acid, and fiber. Research suggests camu camu can help boost cognitive function and reduce your risk of dementia, facilitate muscle growth, aid digestion, lower your risk of obesity, Type 2 diabetes, cancer, macular degeneration and more.
IN THE NEWS: Untreatable 'super gonorrhea' case could be 'tip of the iceberg' The medical community is sounding the alarm after a man in the U.K. has become the first patient with a type of gonorrhea infection that is not responding to the antibiotics commonly used to cure it. Doctors are calling it the “worst-ever” case of the sexually transmitted disease, which hits approximately 78 million men and women every year. According to the BBC, the unidentified man had a regular partner but picked up the disease earlier this year after a sexual encounter with a woman in South East Asia. STDS HIT RECORD HIGH IN US, 2M CASES REPORTED IN 2016 "This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics," said Dr. Gwenda Hughes, from Public Health England, to the BBC. If left untreated, gonorrhea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy, stillbirths, severe eye infections in babies and infertility in both men and women. In the United States, there are approximately 300,000 reported cases of gonorrhea each year. But because infected people often have no symptoms, the actual number of cases is likely closer to 600,000, according to Reuters.
CHIROPRACTIC: Breaking the code of disease. One of the greatest rewards that a doctor of any type can have is helping someone recover their health. When we stopped taking care of ourselves like we should, it just a matter of time before we realize our mistake. Sometimes we don’t appreciate our health until we lose it. One of the tools that we have found very effective in “breaking the code of disease” is Vega testing. We have been able to help a multitude of patients recover their health after other methods have failed. One thing that’s important to realize is drugs primarily cover your symptoms. If you don’t fix the underlying cause and allow healing to take place, then you’re just giving disease time to develop into a more serious condition. I see that it has been some time since your last visit and I would like to encourage you to take a proactive stance concerning your health. Health is the best insurance you can have. Besides eating right for your body type, getting some type of regular movement (exercise), chiropractic adjustments and nutritional therapy are some of the most powerful tools in health recovery and maintenance. Are you noticing your performance and energy less than you would desire? Are you ignoring some reoccurring symptoms/pain or having issues with sleep or digestion? Are you having issues with brain fog or memory? Are you just not enjoying life like you use to? You need to call us today and let us unravel the issues affecting your well-being. Both you and your family would appreciate a healthier you. Call us today for an appointment, do something good for yourself.

IN THE NEWS: Toxic Weed Killer Found in Most Foods Sold in the US Earlier this year, researchers from University of California San Diego School of Medicine reported there’s been a dramatic increase in glyphosate exposure in recent decades and, subsequently, the level found in people’s bodies. As one would expect, the introduction of so-called “Roundup Ready” genetically engineered (GE) crops led to a massive increase in the use of Roundup, the active ingredient of which is glyphosate. Glyphosate has also become a popular tool for desiccating non-GE grains, legumes and beans, which has further spurred the use of the chemical. Between 1974 — the year glyphosate entered the U.S. market — and 2014, glyphosate use in the U.S. increased more than 250fold. Globally, glyphosate use has risen nearly fifteenfold since 1996, two years after the first GE crops hit the market. Between 1974 — the year glyphosate entered the U.S. market — and 2014, glyphosate use in the U.S. increased more than 250fold. Few people had detectable levels of glyphosate in their urine in 1993, but by 2016, 70 percent had detectable levels. Between 1993 and 2016, the glyphosate levels in people’s bodies increased by 1,208 percent. While both the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Pesticide Data Program and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) measure pesticide residues in foods, neither include glyphosate in their official testing. Internal FDA emails reveal Roundup has been found in virtually all foods tested, including granola, oatmeal products, crackers and honey. Independent testing has found significant amounts of glyphosate in a wide range of foods as well, including grains (especially oats), legumes, beans, orange juice, wine and ice cream. NOTE: detoxification should be a regular part of any health program. With Vega testing we can tell if your detox pathways have been compromised and can supply the necessary nutrients to open them back up and help your body cleanse itself of toxic chemicals.
WELLNESS: Zero Tolerance for Zero-Calorie? It sounds enticing enough, particularly for anyone trying to lose weight: zero calorie. Over the years, artificial sweeteners have emerged as the popular choice for people who want to prevent weight gain and diabetes without sacrificing the sweet taste of their favorite desserts and beverages. In fact, these days you'll find artificial sweeteners in a wide range of food and drink products including soft drinks, gum, candy, jelly, yogurt, breakfast cereals, baked goods and many other processed foods. But is "zero calorie" all it's cracked up to be? According to new research, consuming zero-calorie artificial sweeteners may have the same impact as consuming good-old fashioned sugar. For the study, presented this month at the American Physiological Society's 2018 Experimental Biology meeting, researchers gave one group of mice sugar (glucose or fructose) and a second group zero-calorie artificial sweeteners: aspartame (sold under the brand names Equal and NutraSweet) or acesulfame potassium (sold as Sunett and Sweet One). In less than a month, the group given artificial sweeteners showed significant changes in their metabolism, particularly related to the processing of fat and energy. The researchers suggest these changes could increase the risk of obesity and diabetes in a similar fashion as that produced when consuming excess amounts of sugar. This isn't the first study to suggest artificial sweeteners may negatively impact metabolism and how the body processes fat and energy. The moral to the story: Avoid consuming too much sugar, whether it's natural or artificial! Talk to your doctor about a low-sugar, balanced, nutritious diet that helps you maintain a healthy weight and avoid the health consequences associated with obesity.
CHIROPRACTIC: WHEN OTHER METHODS FAIL When chiropractic was just starting out the general public didn't understand what we did. So a lot of patients only visited a chiropractor when the doctor they had seen couldn't help. Chiropractic quickly got a reputation of helping when other methods failed. Today more and more are trying chiropractic first yet we still see patients who've tried every other method before seeing us. With the increased dangers of new pharmaceutical and surgical procedures utilizing chiropractic last could pose a serious health problem to some patients. New pharmaceuticals can sometimes produce permanent damage and make it even harder to restore the body to health once proper care is instituted. The problem can be even worse with surgery where inappropriate surgery has made it very difficult to help the patient. When a patient fully understands what chiropractic does and the principles by which it operates they can see the wisdom of trying chiropractic first then drugs and lastly surgery. To state that simply if you have a pain condition a drug could cover up the symptoms but it can't fix the underlying problem. With chiropractic care, if we're going to help the patient we have to find a cause and fix the cause. When a patient with a chronic pain condition starts to get better under chiropractic care that's because the underlying cause is being correct. When you take a pain pill that's like cutting the wire to the red light on your dashboard and thinking you've accomplished something. Only addressing the symptoms without fixing the cause is a road that can lead to disaster as far as your health is concerned. Chiropractic works with neurology and physiology when we restore proper nerve control to areas of your body that are dysfunctional. Chiropractic works with the chemical system of your body when we restore the proper nutritional elements necessary for good health. In a recent study published in a peer-reviewed journal chiropractic care can save substantial healthcare costs. A comparison of health care costs for chiropractic and medical patients. J Manipulative Physiol Ther. 1993 Jun;16(5):291-9.CONCLUSIONS: Although work is in progress to control for possible variations in case mix and to compare outcomes in addition to costs, these preliminary results suggest a significant cost-saving potential for users of chiropractic care. The results also suggest the need to re-examine insurance practices and programs that restrict chiropractic coverage relative to medical coverage.

IN THE NEWS: Rare Gene That Confers Drug Resistance Between Bacteria Now Found in 27 States At present, 23,000 Americans die each year from drug-resistant infections; estimates suggest that by 2050 the global death toll from antibiotic-resistant disease will reach 10 million per year. One significant driver of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is the routine use of antibiotics in agriculture. Another major contributor to and source of drug-resistant infections is hospitals. One particularly troublesome multidrug-resistant bacteria that is gaining ground is carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae (CRE), which produces an enzyme that breaks down antibiotics. Tests conducted on nearly 5,780 antibiotic-resistant bacterial samples collected from hospitals and nursing homes found 1 in 4 contained genes known to confer drug resistance, and 221 contained a particularly rare drug-resistance gene that confers a very high level of resistance. The 221 samples came from 27 different states, which shows this new drug-resistance gene has already spread far and wide. The gene was found in samples of pneumonia, bloodstream infections and urinary tract infections. NOTE: There are multiple safe and effective natural treatments for infections, try a natural approach first then consider a drug like antibiotics only if necessary.
WELLNESS: Pantothenic Acid: A Crucial Vitamin for Optimal Health What Is Pantothenic Acid? The popularity of pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 pales in comparison to that of the other B vitamins, probably because it’s easily obtained from a well-balanced diet, so a deficiency of it is quite rare. Being a lesser-known vitamin does not take away from its worth, though. Pantothenic acid is still essential for your health, as it helps perform a number of functions that sustain life itself, including: Breaking down fats and carbohydrates for energy-Producing red blood cells-Manufacturing sex and stress-related hormones-Synthesizing cholesterol. As with other forms of vitamin B, pantothenic acid is not stored in the body because it’s water-soluble. The excess pantothenic acid that your body did not use will be flushed out through your urine, which means that you have to obtain it from your food every day. While a deficiency in vitamin B5 rarely occurs, it’s still entirely possible, especially if you have dietary restrictions that may keep you from eating foods rich in this nutrient. Pantothenic acid is sensitive to heat and humidity, so consuming processed foods that have been subjected to high-temperature manufacturing methods may not be enough to replenish your body’s level of this vitamin. Pantothenic acid performs vital functions that may help keep your overall well-being in optimal condition. One of these functions is its ability to support the synthesis of hormones in the adrenal glands, which may help you cope with stressful situations, hence why it’s also known as the “anti-stress” vitamin.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: SLEEP DISORDER-Myth 1: Getting just one hour less sleep per night won’t affect your daytime functioning. You may not be noticeably sleepy during the day, but losing even one hour of sleep can affect your ability to think properly and respond quickly. It also compromises your cardiovascular health, energy balance, and ability to fight infections. Myth 2: Your body adjusts quickly to different sleep schedules. Most people can reset their biological clock, but only by appropriately timed cues—and even then, by one or two hours per day at best. Consequently, it can take more than a week to adjust after traveling across several time zones or switching to the night shift. Myth 3: Extra sleep at night can cure you of problems with excessive daytime fatigue. The quantity of sleep you get is important, sure, but it's the quality of your sleep that you really have to pay attention to. Some people sleep eight or nine hours a night but don’t feel well rested when they wake up because the quality of their sleep is poor. Myth 4: You can make up for lost sleep during the week by sleeping more on the weekends. Although this sleeping pattern will help relieve part of a sleep debt, it will not completely make up for the lack of sleep. Furthermore, sleeping later on the weekends can affect your sleep-wake cycle so that it is much harder to go to sleep at the right time on Sunday nights and get up early on Monday mornings. You may be sleep deprived if you...Need an alarm clock in order to wake up on time-Rely on the snooze button-Have a hard time getting out of bed in the morning-Feel sluggish in the afternoon-Get sleepy in meetings, lectures, or warm rooms-Get drowsy after heavy meals or when driving-Need to nap to get through the day-Fall asleep while watching TV or relaxing in the evening-Feel the need to sleep in on weekends-Fall asleep within five minutes of going to bed. NOTE: Chiropractic and nutritional therapy are extremely effective for sleep problems, ask about it on your next appointment.

IN THE NEWS: Depressed and Anxious Patients Receive More Than Half of All Opioid Prescriptions In 2014, 1.2 million Americans ended up in the emergency room with an opioid-related side effect; in 2015, 33,000 died from an opioid-associated drug overdose. Adults with depression and anxiety receive 51 percent of all opioid prescriptions in the U.S.; 19 percent of the 38.6 million Americans diagnosed with a mental health disorder use opioids, compared to 5 percent of the general population. Women are being prescribed opioids during pregnancy and after delivery, creating drug dependent mothers and infants; 23 percent of 1.1 million pregnant women enrolled in Medicaid filled a prescription for an opioid in 2007. Well over 65,000 die from opioid abuse last year compare that to 58,000 that died in the Vietnam War. When it comes to pain control our healthcare system is broken. WELLNESS: Apple Cider Vinegar As you may know, apples, and especially apple juice, are high in sugar and are not something I recommend eating regularly as it will typically shift you out of fat-burning if frequently eaten. However, when you ferment apple juice or cider, the sugars are digested as a result of the fermentation process. Apple cider vinegar contains very little sugar and carbohydrate, making it a very attractive food from a dietary standpoint. Apple cider vinegar offers many potential health benefits: Apple cider vinegar contains a number of important components, such as organic acids: acetic, citric, formic, lactic, malic, and succinic acids. It also contains acid, catechins, epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and p-coumaric acid. Plus, it’s a source of manganese and potassium. Research suggests acetic acid may be the most significant of these components for health, and is found in high levels in apple cider vinegar. In various studies, researchers have found that acetic acid and the other constituents may help with a variety of healthy body functions: Healthy oxidation and cholesterol support, Normal cardiovascular support, Healthy cognitive function, Normal lymphatic drainage and normal detoxification processes, Athletic recovery. According to new research, healthy vinegar with acetic acid may support nutritional ketosis, and in turn, your mitochondrial health.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: B VITAMINS Hardly anyone talks about B vitamins these days. I believe that’s about to change. With our deteriorating food quality, rising assaults on gut health, and a living environment that becomes more toxic by the day, it’s clear that we need this complex of brain and body nutrients more than ever. Most people are eager to remain mentally sharp, energetic and independent into their later years. As you’ll soon see, researchers are discovering potential benefits of the family of B vitamins that are much greater than we ever imagined.Because of this, the day we give B vitamins the attention they deserve has finally arrived...Keep in mind, you don’t need to have a flat-out deficiency in any of these vitamins. Low levels of B vitamins can affect your body in many different ways because of the vitamins’ far-reaching and interrelated effects. A B vitamin complex deficiency can show up in multiple ways. Any one of these common symptoms could be a result of low levels of one or more B vitamins: Inability to sleep well..Fatigue and apathy..Mental “fog,” confusion, and forgetfulness..Mood swings and irritability..Gastrointestinal symptoms..Joint or muscle discomfort..Muscle weakness..Loss of muscle mass.. Numbness or tingling in fingers and toes..Frequent bruising.. eadaches.. Irritability..Dry, cracking skin. Because the vitamin B complex is a group of eight major B vitamins that work together, you can impact their synergy just by running low on one. For example, many of the B complex vitamins are needed for healthy skin. If you’re low in one or two, that can affect the actions of the others. Your nervous system requires B vitamins to respond properly to adjustments.
