Mastic gum, also referred to as mastica,(click blue text to order) is the resin obtained from the Pistacia lentiscus tree, commonly sourced from the island of Chios in Greece. We also see this plant used historically throughout the Middle East and Northern Africa.
Mastic gum’s medicinal properties have been utilized for thousands of years for gastrointestinal ailments and related health concerns. These include the prevention of ulcers, ease of stomach discomfort, the killing off of bacteria, stubborn coughs, and teeth cleaning. Mastic gum is both antibacterial and antiviral. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.
Mastic gum enjoyed a revival in the 1980s and 1990s when scientists discovered that it kills Helicobacter Pylori (H. Pylori). This infection affects the mouth, stomach, and intestines. Although this bacteria is present in billions of guts worldwide, when it becomes invasive it exacerbates or causes conditions like gastritis, peptic ulcers, stomach cancer, glaucoma, and Hashimoto’s.
Mastic gum has been used historically to treat cancers of breast, liver, spleen, and uterus. Modern science has shown the validity of its use in such cases, and added to this list its benefit to the colon and heart.
Mastic gum is also used to treat heartburn, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Crohn’s disease, chronic sore throat, herpes simplex, and to improve cholesterol levels.
Tangentially, mastic gum is used in traditional Greek, Turkish, and Arabic cooking.
How Mastica Works
Mastic is rich in terpenes. Terpenes are found in a variety of plants, giving them their unique scent and sometimes flavor. In this case, terpenes are the major organic compounds present in mastic gum’s resin that help to fight bacteria. The constituents are also believed to regulate and improve signaling between cells.
Many scientific papers state the effectiveness of mastic for various health conditions, yet state that the exact mechanism of action is still unknown.
When to Use Mastica
As aforementioned, the stomach’s pH, especially during digestion, is highly acidic. In a healthy stomach epithelial cells produce and secrete a thick layer of mucous to protect themselves from the acid and enzymes.
We require an acidic stomach not only to digest protein and other foods, but also to stimulate multiple digestive mechanisms, including the sphincter valve (lower esophageal sphincter [LES]) that connects the stomach to the esophagus (thus preventing heartburn and acid reflux), the liver that produces bile (which breaks down fat), the gall bladder that releases bile, and the ileocecal valve (between the large and small intestine) that when properly closed helps to prevent SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth). The proper stomach pH also helps to prevent the overgrowth of microorganisms and undigested food in the intestines (which leads to a systemic immune response, food sensitivities, inflammation, and autoimmune disease).
So while the stomach must be acidic during meals for digestion to work properly, we can work between meal times to rebuild the mucosal lining.
The burning feeling some patients feel in their stomachs during or after a meal, occurs when the acidic environment of the stomach comes into contact with damaged tissue. This burning feeling can become an ulcer, if not addressed.
Mastic gum can be taken in quantities between 1000 and 5000 mg. daily for many months, or longer, safely. In addition to killing harmful bacteria, it is speculated that it promotes new cell growth, thus rebuilding the epithelial cells that produce the mucosal lining.
One study recommends using mastica for many months to see a reduction in H. Pylori colonization levels. Due to emerging antibiotic resistance as well as the costliness of antibiotics, it’s considered an excellent alternative treatment. (I would add that antibiotics destroy the patient’s beneficial gut flora, largely foundational to good health.) Your doctor can determine if you have an overgrowth of H. Pylori through a blood test or with a urea breath test.

The Study:
The influence of pelvic adjustment on the posture of female university students.
The Facts:
a. The authors looked at changes in posture in female university students who received pelvic adjustments using the Gonstead Technique.
b. The pelvis positioning “…is the most important element that determines the sagittal alignment and posture of the body and abnormal posture triggers diverse problems, including flat-back syndrome, cervical kyphosis, local organ ailments such as uterine prolapse and gastric herniation.”
c. The subjects were female university students and they were divided into a group that received the adjustments and a control group that did stretching only.
d. A thrust was made for a posterior inferior innominate with the patient prone.
e. The adjustments were made 3 to 5 times by a physical therapist. (emphasis ours)
f. A Back Mapper was used to make the postural measurements.
g. The stretching group showed no significant changes, but the adjustment group showed significant changes in trunk imbalance, pelvic position, pelvic torsion, and position of the scapulae.
Take Home:
Adjustments improved posture.

Global rotation is the sum of all the relative rotations so if you changed one or more relative rotations you would tend to affect the global rotation to some degree. In other words, if you change the alignment of boney structures then you will tend to affect the posture. But why do I say “tend to”? Because, I want you to understand that this subject is more complex than simply improving the alignment of a single segment and then automatically assuming that global alignment will also improve. Likewise, it is possible for patients to demonstrate reasonably healthy global posture and still exhibit small, single segment problems (misalignment, dysfunctional motion, etc). You need both good relative and good global alignment. But then you regularly read Science in Brief so you already had that figured out.

How much do I drink?

Your water needs are based on your body weight. Half your body weight is your cleansing dose and 80% of that is your minimum because otherwise you're dehydrated.
100 pound person, 50 ounces is their cleansing dose and 40 ounces is a minimum of fluids they should drink every day.
How much alkaline water should I drink? That depends on your pH. We carry very sensitive pH paper for determining your urine pH which is the pH we base your need for alkaline water on. If you're a vegetarian and your pH is already alkaline then you can just drink regular filtered water. But if your pH is lower than 6.4 then you need to drink alkaline water. I would recommend 1 L a day minimum. Depending on your weight more might be indicated.
How alkaline of water should I drink? Water can come from about 7.8 to 10. You can drink water that is to alkaline for you and it is best to be tested at our office to determine the best pH. Waters with a pH of 9 to 9.5 tend to test the best, but your situation might be different.

Both saliva and urine pH should be 6.4. When you maintain that then your blood and cells will be able to maintain the pH that is right for them. Saliva pH indicate your digestive pH whereas urine pH indicates your body pH. So for determining your need for alkaline water urine pH is the one to watch. Also it is recommended not to drink alkaline water with meals. If you're going to drink water with a meal I recommend squeezing several lemon or lime slices in the water to make it acidic. Lemon and lime will be alkaline on your body yet acid in your stomach.
I don't keep up with drug sales let alone the actions and side effects of all the latest drugs. But I would think antacids must be making pharmaceutical companies literally billions of dollars each year. (The January 8, 2001 issue of Business Week mentions that Priolsec is the top selling prescription drug in the world. It earns Astra Zeneca (the drug’s maker) 6 billion dollars per year.)

When you consistently reduced the amount of HCl that is released from your stomach that causes a series of changes in the lining of your stomach. There are several principles to good digestion. Past research has shown that "the brain is likely vulnerable to further physiologic and metabolic changes right after an injury - whether that be from sustaining more impacts or even from continued physical exertion," said lead author Breton Asken, a neuropsychology graduate student in the University of Florida's Clinical Psychology doctoral program. Athletes who played football, soccer, basketball, swimming, diving, volleyball and other sports were included. "Our findings indicate that immediately engaging your medical staff if you suspect you have sustained a concussion will give you the best chance to return to your sport more quickly," Asken said. Side note: once you have a concussion it’s more likely you could have another one with lesser of an injury. The more concussions the more brain damage.

By definition, unprocessed or minimally processed contain none. Ultra-processed foods get 21 percent of their calories from added sugars. The 2015 U.S. dietary guidelines recommend limiting sugar intake to a max of 10 percent of daily calories. Cutting down on ultra-processed foods is a simple way to reduce your added sugar intake.

WELLNESS: For Lower Blood Pressure, Eat More of These If you want to protect your teens from high blood pressure as adults, ease off on salt restrictions and make sure they're getting enough potassium in their diets. The study, which was published in JAMA Pediatrics, found no evidence that higher intakes of salt had a negative effect on adolescent blood pressure. But girls who had high levels of potassium had lower blood pressure throughout adolescence than girls who were deficient in the mineral. Measuring stomach pH/function using pH paper
The official way to measure stomach pH is to start with the stomach empty so only fluid remains in the stomach. Stomach fluid is removed through a tube that is inserted into the stomach through the esophagus (food pipe).
An easier way to approach this to get a “relative” stomach pH is to use pH paper to test your saliva. Normal saliva pH should be 6.4 as the pH of the stomach goes up and down the saliva will change in its pH as well.
You can demonstrate this on yourself by checking your pH and then consuming a meal and recheck your pH over the next hour. You should notice that your pH becomes alkaline right away as the acid in the stomach is being diluted by the food. In most cases it takes 30 minutes to an hour before your pH returns to the pre-meal state. If it takes longer for your pH to return to normal that suggest a weakness in the digestive process. Even though this test doesn’t give you an exact stomach pH it will give you a functional pH significant enough to tell you how your digestive process is doing.
To do proper pH testing on the body it’s important to have pH paper that is sensitive to subtle changes. The common pH paper that’s found in the drugstore is usually not sensitive enough to do proper body pH testing. Some papers only test every .5 in the pH scale you want to paper that tests every .2 in the pH scale. Your urine and saliva pH should be 6.4 under normal circumstances during the day. The exceptions to this is that your urine pH becomes concentrated overnight and tends to be more acid. And so if you want an accurate urine pH it’s best to check it sometime after your first morning void. Then the pH should be 6.4 any other time that you tested it unless you’re having an allergy reaction which would tend to make it more acidic.
Your saliva as we mentioned earlier will become more alkaline right after a meal. So the best time to check your saliva pH is either before you eat or more than an hour after you eat.
By checking your saliva pH every 30 minutes after a meal can reveal subtle problems with the digestive process. If it takes more than an hour for your saliva pH to return to its pre-meal state then that suggest a weak digestive system.
The problem in the digestive system causing your saliva pH to be off could be anywhere within the digestive track and so an evaluation is necessary to find the source of the problem. We recommend that if you start a meal at a pH 7 or higher that you take enzymes both before and after that meal. Most enzymes are best taken at the end of a meal unless their vegetable-based enzymes. The idea is that you want your digestive system to do as much as it can and then just supplement it to help improve a more thorough breakdown of your foods.
Undigested food is an irritant to your colon. This is why chronic use of antacids are so dangerous not only because they put undigested food which is an irritant to the lining of the colon but they also allow microorganisms that would normally be killed in the upper digestive track. HCl helps purify your food as well as breaking it down. So chronic use of antacids would deprive you of essential nutrients from the foods that you eat. And since minerals are metal they will be the first of the nutrients that you will start noticing deficiencies from. But other elements like B-12 are classically found low in people who use antacids chronically.

Your body pH, which is tested through the urine, can also be a factor affecting your digestive pH. It’s not uncommon to find both of these pHs to be extremely different and at opposite extremes. If your urine pH, body pH, becomes way too acid there can be a negative feedback loop that suppresses your stomach’s production of even more acid. So an attempt to correct your digestive pH you might have to utilize techniques to improve your body pH. Since most of our chronic diseases develop in an inflammatory chemistry having an acid urine can be a indicator of inflammatory chemistry.
Utilizing alkaline water or alkalizing foods can have a healing effect on an inflammatory chemistry. You can ask for a pH food list to help correct your body pH if it is too acid or to alkaline. If your urine is too acid then you need to eat more alkalizing foods which are listed on the handout.

A plant-based diet. A recent study suggests that women who eat lots of fruit, veggies and legumes, and little red meat, salt and processed carbohydrates may lower their odds of developing estrogen-receptor negative breast cancer, which accounts for about a quarter of all breast cancers. And a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that the likelihood of the cancer was 20 percent less when women followed such a diet.
Red, yellow and orange fruits and veggies. In December, researchers at Harvard Medical School said that women with higher levels of carotenoids, or nutrients found in fruits and veggies, have a lower risk of breast cancer, especially cancers that are more difficult to treat and have a poorer prognosis. Smart choices include carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, kale, red peppers and winter squash. The study was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
- Consuming walnuts slowed the development and growth of breast cancer tumors in mice, according to a study published in 2011 in Nutrition and Cancer. Study author Elaine Hardman, a professor at Marshall University's Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine, looked at the effect of a diet containing the human equivalent of 2 ounces of walnuts a day (25 to 30 walnut halves). After 34 days, mice that ate walnuts had less than half the rate of breast cancer as a control group on the same diet minus the walnuts. The number and size of tumors also were significantly smaller for the walnut group. The study authors speculate that walnuts' anti-inflammatory properties are the reason.
- Cutting back on alcohol. Even a moderate amount of alcohol is "clearly linked" to an increased risk of breast cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Compared with non-drinkers, women who have two to five drinks a day are at least 50 percent likelier to develop the disease. If you have to drink, stick to a glass of wine (5 ounces), a shot of liquor (1.5 ounces) or a bottle of beer (12 ounces) a day.
Cabbage and sauerkraut. Researchers at Michigan State University found that people who ate raw or lightly cooked cabbage and sauerkraut at least three times a week were 72 percent less likely to develop breast cancer than those who had it twice or less. High levels of glucosinolates – compounds found in cabbage – may be responsible.

- Soy. Soybeans contain phytoestrogens. These are nutrients similar to the estrogen in your body. Soybeans (also called edamame), tofu, soy milk, and miso soup contain phytoestrogens. Some researchers think they can help protect against the kind of breast cancer that depends on estrogen for its growth, but others don't. Ask your doctor whether eating one to three servings of soy foods a day would help you. It's possible it may interfere with hormone therapy or some other treatment.
- Antioxidants. Many vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other foods contain antioxidants. Foods with antioxidants include broccoli, liver, and mangoes. Antioxidants protect your cells from damage. Dietitians say you should eat a balanced diet with a variety of fresh foods to get antioxidants. That's better than taking megadoses insupplements.
- Beta-carotene. Beta-carotene gives carrots, apricots, yams, and other vegetables and fruits their orange color. Some studies that suggest that a diet high in beta-carotene-rich foods may lower the risk of dying from breast cancer.
- Lycopene. Lycopene is what puts the red in tomatoes and the pink in pink grapefruit. It might also help prevent recurrence of breast cancer.

1: Oily Fish
Fish oil will provide long chain omega-3, a powerful anti-inflammatory in the body that minimizes COX-2 and its abilities to drive localized negative hormones called eicosanoids which inflame and irritate. Omega-3 has been shown to re-lengthen telomeres, which shorten when you have cancer putting the DNA structure at risk, and reducing longevity. Oily fish also contain vitamin A, an important vitamin in the fight against cancer (herring, mackerel and salmon are top of the list). Fish oils have been linked to reduced levels of prostate, breast and colon cancer. Research shows they help prevent cachexia when having chemotherapy. You´ll also get a little vitamin D from them, another proven cancer-fighter.
2: Carrots
Along with apricots, peppers and pumpkins, they provide cancer carotenoids like beta-carotene, which converts to vitamin A, when required by the body. 1 cup of carrot juice, 2 sweet potatoes, 16 dried apricots and 4 cups of red cherries will each provide 25mgs. Don´t eat them all at once - people have been known to turn a little orange! A great juice to make yourself involves carrots and apples (for quercitin) and beetroot (for anthocyanins). A real cancer fighting drink! Carotenoids are also found in natural food sources such as chlorella.
3: Red and Yellow Peppers
The top source of vitamin C in the UK - even better than oranges. Vitamin C strengthens your immune cells and neutralises toxins. Linus Pauling thought cancer patients should consume 2 to 10 gms per day. A large red pepper is 250 mgs. 200 gms raw broccoli 175 mgs. 150 gms papaya 90 mgs. An orange 65 mgs. Berries and cherries are great sources. Red and yellow peppers are also good sources of carotenoids.
4: Sunflower Seeds
High in zinc and vitamin E. Zinc helps vitamin C do its work and accelerates healing time. It is important to a healthy prostate. You need 15 to 25 mgs per day. Five tablespoons of sunflower seeds give you 10 mgs. Best are oysters, 3 are enough. Milk can block zinc absorption. Sunflower seeds will also provide a little selenium.
Pumpkin Seeds
Can be mixed with the sunflower seeds in your morning muesli. 5 tablespoons will each provide 20 mgs of vitamin E, the ultimate cancer buster, which inhibits cancer cell growth and protects immune cells from free radicals. Vitamin E boosts your immune system´s fighting abilities. The target is 300-600 mgs and is difficult to achieve without supplements. Green vegetables, soya and almonds are also good sources.
5: Brazil Nuts
Six cracked nuts will give you your daily selenium; 100 to 200 mcgs is the goal. Selenium is a very potent anti-cancer agent. Eight slices of wholemeal bread, an organic egg, or a large chicken breast will also be enough.
Tuna, onions, broccoli and tomatoes contain selenium too.
6: Mushrooms
There´s an enormous body of research evidence now that shows how ´medicinal´ mushrooms (Shiitake, Maiitake, cordyceps etc) boost the immune system and fight cancer. Even the button mushroom has cancer fighting ingredients. We have a great review on medicinal mushrooms
7: Tomatoes
Seven to ten helpings per week, especially cooked.
According to Harvard research 7-10 helpings a week cuts prostate symptoms by 40% and has an influence on many cancers e.g.: lung; colon; cervix; breast. Lycopene is the prime active ingredient, and 25 - 40 mgs the desired daily dose.
It is also found in strawberries, peppers, carrots and peaches, but one tin of tomato soup has 65 mgs alone. Lycopene helps reduce ´bad´ fat levels in the blood stream and is a strong antioxidant.
8: Egg Yolk
Along with green leafy vegetables, avocado, beans, carrots, apricots and pumpkins, egg yolk will give you folic acid.
This will help your DNA to replicate properly and protect it during radiotherapy.
400 micrograms is a recommended amount. Folate, biotin, niacin and vitamin B6 are all B vitamins that help in the cancer fight. Egg yolk, greens and whole grains are the best sources.
9: Broccoli
And other green cruciferous vegetables e.g. cabbage, kale, Brussels sprouts, contain fibre which helps eliminate toxins
Moreover, the fibre is rich in galactose, which binds to damaging agents in the intestine.
Cruciferous vegetables also contain indoles, and especially indole3carbinol which, along with its metabolite DIM, modifies and diminishes aggressive oestrogen action, can modify cellular oestrogen receptor sites, and aids in fighting oestrogen-driven cancers like some breast, prostate, brain and colorectal cancers.
I3C and DIM were also found to have action in non-oestrogen driven cancers as they can also affect thep27 cancer pathway.
Finally, sulphorophane in broccoli and especially sprouting broccoli seeds helps the liver detoxify, and reduces stomach cancer tumours.
10: Garlic
It is a truly wonderful food. It seems to act to stop the spread of cancer in a number of ways, for example by stopping blood supply forming for tumours.
Garlic has a number of active ingredients. It contains selenium, tryptophan and sulpher based active agents that attack cancer cells.
Two or three raw cloves of garlic per day will ward off more than vampires.
11: Beetroot
And cherries, aubergines, red grapes - indeed any purple coloured fruits and vegeatables. They contain anthocyanins (and sometimes also resveratrol). Anthocyanins have been shown to kill cancer cells; resveratrrol has research supporting its role in fighting certain cancers like blood and brain cancers too.
12: Pulses
Lentils, chickpeas, beans and even soya etc. are a great source of fibre and protein without the animal fat.
Pulses also contain isoflavones, phytoestrogens. People get confused about plant oestrogen. The cells of your body have oestrogen receptor sites. When one form of human oestrogen (oestradiol) binds to them, the result is havoc inside your cells. About 40 times less potent is human oestrogen oestrone and about 40 to 50 times less potent still are plant oestrogens. Now which would you rather have sitting on your receptors? Pulses also provide fibres like lignans that can help neutralise free-radicals in the gut and blood stream.
Eat pulses every two days.

IN THE NEWS: Low Selenium Levels Correlate with Increased Risk of Colorectal Cancer The International Journal of Cancer recently published a study reporting that low selenium levels are associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the U. S., excluding skin cancers. It is estimated there will be 96,830 new cases of colon cancer and 40,000 new cases of rectal cancer in the U.S. for 2014. The investigators stated, "The findings indicate that selenium status is suboptimal in many and suggest an inverse association between colorectal cancer risk and higher serum selenium status, which is more evident in women." Lean meats, poultry, seafood, beans and peas, eggs, and nuts and seeds. Pork, beef, turkey, chicken, fish, shellfish, and eggs contain high amounts of selenium. Some beans and nuts, especially Brazil nuts, contain selenium.

DIET: HOW CHILIES CAN BE USED TO TREAT PAIN Chili peppers’ heat comes from capsaicin, a compound produced to protect them from fungal attack. When you eat a chili pepper, capsaicin binds to and activates heat receptor proteins called TRPV1, so even though you’re not actually in danger, your body thinks it’s being exposed to extreme heat. If exposed to capsaicin for long enough, your pain nerve cells will become de-sensitized to the painful stimulus. Capsaicin is available in pain-relieving creams and patches, and has shown promise for relieving shingles pain, osteoarthritis, psoriasis symptoms, and more. Capsaicin has both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and has also shown some promise for cancer, weight loss, and allergy symptoms.
IN THE NEWS: Solutions for an overactive bladder Cut down-Caffeine in coffee, tea and soda can irritate the bladder and make the urge to go stronger, so cutting back may help. Drop the pounds- If you’re overweight or obese, losing weight can significantly improve your symptoms. “As the weight goes down, the pressure on the bladder goes down,” Ramin said. Do Kegels- “Performing Kegel exercises can reduce frequent urges to urinate,” said Dr. S. Adam Ramin, a urologist and urologic surgeon at Providence Saint John's Health Center in Santa Monica, Calif. and the founder and medical director of Urology Cancer Specialists in Los Angeles. So contract, hold and release, and shoot for 30 to 40 Kegels a day. Bladder retraining- You can actually condition your bladder to function properly by teaching yourself how to suppress the urge to urinate. So when you feel like you have to go, do a Kegel instead and then try to wait before going the bathroom. Estrogen cream- Thinning of the vaginal wall as a result of a drop in estrogen during menopause can cause irritation and inflammation of the bladder. An estrogen cream can help and is safe for women, even those who have had breast cancer, because it doesn’t get absorbed into the blood stream, Ramin said.

As we discuss inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods we must understand the difference in body types. There were four body types that require slightly different blends of carbohydrates fat, and proteins. These can be divided into two basic groups one the high complex carbohydrate low-fat and the other being high-protein low carbohydrate. If you’re in a high complex carbohydrate low-fat group then foods like eggs, butter, salt, redmeat and some spices could be a problem. If you’re in the high protein low carb group than refined carbohydrates sugars grains could be a problem. So it’s important to know what body type you have as you review the following list of anti-inflammatory foods. Also any food that you’re allergic to can be pro-inflammatory even on the list of anti-inflammatory foods. For instance the nightshade family can be pro-inflammatory if you’re allergic to them. They include: potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), many species of sweet and hot peppers (all species of Capsicum, including Capsicum annum), and eggplant (Solanum melongena). Less well know, but equally genuine nightshade foods include ground cherries (all species of Physalis), tomatillos (Physallis ixocapra), garden huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum), tamarillos (Cyphomandra betacea), pepinos (Solanum muricatum), and naranjillas (Solanum quitoense). Pimentos (also called pimientos) belong to the nightshade family, and usually come from the pepper plant Capsicum annum. Pimento cheese and pimento-stuffed olives are therefore examples of foods that should be classified as containing nightshade components. Although the sweet potato, whose scientific name is Ipomoea batatas, belongs to the same plant order as the nightshades (Polemoniales), it does not belong to the Solanaceae family found in this order, but to a different plant family called Convolvulaceae.

In November we covered a new study looking at the use of probiotics in treating depression. Today I ran across another article which shows significant benefits for IBS patients as well. This newest study is a randomized, double blind, placebo-controlled trial which looked at the use of a multispecies probiotic supplement in patients with irritable bowel symptoms. A total of 49 patients were divided into two treatment groups. (25 received probiotics and 24 received only a placebo). Patients were surveyed on their symptoms and in addition, fecal microflora were analyzed in 34 patients (17 from each group) to determine if changes in intestinal flora were actually taking place following supplementation.

The authors conclude that "Multispecies probiotics are effective in IBS patients and induce the alterations in the composition of intestinal microbiota." At the end of 4 weeks, 68% of the treatment group was reporting substantial relief in terms of pain/discomfort, bloating, stool frequency/consistency... nearly twice the percentage of the placebo group.
Over the years I've experience the power chiropractic in improving the health of both my own children and the children I've had the privilege to serve. We live in an ever increasingly dangerous healthcare system. The common use of toxic and dangerous drugs and the overuse and misuse of medication like antibiotics are having a serious deficit effect on the health of our kids. Today more and more kids go to school drugged by design. And it seems to be only getting worse.
There is a simple glaring problem with this approach, drugs don't produce health. Drugs might modify symptoms, at a cost, but outside of crisis care their effects are temporary and their side effects can be long-term. Probably one of the drugs that have been abused the most is antibiotics. In a vast number of cases where antibiotics are prescribed, they are prescribed in violation of all the latest research concerning the appropriate use of antibiotics. Research shows that antibiotics don't work for colds or flu's, most conditions where there's a cough, most bronchitis or runny noses and most ear infections. Probably 70 to 80% of the time when these symptoms are presented the pediatrician or other doctor writes a prescription for antibiotics even though the doctor knows they are inappropriate. Why? When the doctor is interrogated afterwards they usually blame the parent for demanding it. The sad truth is most parents just want the appropriate care and since the medical doctor doesn't have any more training in how to address these issues without drugs (and drugs don't help conditions like these) then they feel impotent if they don't write some kind of prescription. Buyer beware!
The sad fact is that pharmaceutical companies have taken over the healthcare system and if you're not an informed consumer then you will line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and damage your kid's own health. Disease is not a drug deficiency, diseases is a deficiency within the body. Chiropractic physicians have the training to reestablish the body's own communication systems necessary to keep the system health. Chiropractic physicians have the training in diet, allergies, detox protocols and nutritional therapies to reestablish normal function of the systems of the body including the immune system. Antibiotics weaken the immune system. Even when antibiotics are needed to kill an aggressive bacterial infection their side effects can leave the person's immune system weaker and actually more prone to reoccurring infections. Chiropractic physicians have the training to help reverse the negative effects of antibiotics and to reestablish a stronger immune system.
When it comes to preventing disease drugs are the worst approach you could take. Disease prevention is a lifestyle, diet and chiropractic centered strategy. Since science has proven overwhelmingly that disease is related to lifestyle and environment then that's where you need to work if you want to improve your child's health.
Unfortunately the food industry is not your friend. Virtually all the foods marketed to kids will wreak havoc with their health. Most of these foods are extremely high in refined carbohydrates which depress your child's immune system and develop the chemistry prone to disease. By simply feeding your kids natural foods: eggs, vegetables, fruits, meat, whole grains in moderation, seeds, nuts and some dairy in moderation you can establish a chemistry of health in your child. Junk food like most cereals, candies, refined grains in most noodles, pizzas, white bread, crackers etc. leads to a chemistry that is prone to disease. The fact that a lot of kids go through periods of time of “apparent health” is a miracle of the creation we call our bodies.
One of the most important things you can do is make sure your kids drink enough clean water and stay away from pops, fruit juices and fake fruit drinks and fructose that come from highly refined corn syrup. Stevia is a great sugar substitute and can be used in a number of things to give it a sweet taste without disrupting your kids’ blood sugar handling system. Marked deviations in normal blood sugar levels will weaken the immune system and affect your kid's moods. A lot of kids suffer from focus issues at school, hyperactivity or moodiness simply because they don't get enough quality proteins to make neurotransmitters, because of the high sugar content of their diet they can't maintain normal blood sugar levels which can lead to depression and moodiness as the sugar drops. Also their intestinal system suffers due to the amount of junk food they consume which disrupts the normal serotonin levels that the gut produces which in turn affects moods. Whole foods prevent all of these issues.
Chiropractic adjustments can have a dramatic effect on how the nervous system expresses emotions and that's why chiropractic care has helped so many kids whose schoolwork suffers from hyperactivity and attention deficit syndrome.
