Casual marijuana use linked with brain abnormalities, study finds
Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects.
For the first time, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures.
The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development.
Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual marijuana use after previous work in his lab found that heavy cannabis use caused similar brain abnormalities to those seen in patients with schizophrenia.
"The interaction of marijuana with brain development could be a significant problem."- Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author
“There were abnormalities in their working memory, which is fundamental to everything you do,” Breiter, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told FoxNews.com. “When you make judgments or decisions, plan things, do mathematics – anything you do always involves working memory. It’s one of the core fundamental aspects of our brains that we use every day. So given those findings, we decided we need to look at casual, recreational use.”
For their most recent study, Breiter and his team analyzed a very small sample of patients between the ages of 18 and 25: 20 marijuana users and 20 well-matched control subjects. The marijuana users had a wide range of usage routines, with some using the drug just once or twice a week and others using it every single day.
Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the researchers analyzed the participants’ brains, focusing on the nucleus accumbens (NAC) and the amygdala – two key brain regions responsible for processing emotions, making decisions and motivation. They looked at these brain structures in three different ways, measuring their density, volume and shape.
According to Breiter, all three were abnormal in the casual marijuana users.
“For the NAC, all three measures were abnormal, and they were abnormal in a dose-dependent way, meaning the changes were greater with the amount of marijuana used,” Breiter said. “The amygdala had abnormalities for shape and density, and only volume correlated with use. But if you looked at all three types of measures, it showed the relationships between them were quite abnormal in the marijuana users, compared to the normal controls.”
Because these brain regions are central for motivation, the findings from Northwestern help support the well-known theory that marijuana use leads to a condition called amotivation. Also called amotivational syndrome, this psychological condition causes people to become less oriented towards their goals and purposes in life, as well as seem less focused in general.
Given these eye-opening results, Breiter said that more research is needed to look into marijuana’s effects on the brain – even in those who use the drug only once or twice a month.
“We need to see what happens longitudinally,” Breiter said. “What happens as you follow people over time? What happens if they stop using – do these bad effects continue? What happens if you can intervene early?...My worry is we haven’t studied this compound and here we are looking to change legislation on it.”
Although Breiter’s team members did not examine the patients’ cognitive symptoms, they do believe that the brain abnormalities seen in their study could lead to substantial effects on brain development and behavior, especially given the young ages of the participants. Breiter also acknowledged the problems of analyzing a very small study sample – but said that their findings should still serve as a wake-up call to others.
“This study is just a beginning pilot study, but at the same time, the results that came out are the same as a canary in a coal mine,” Breiter said. “...The interaction of marijuana with brain development could be a significant problem.”

As we discuss inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods we must understand the difference in body types. There were four body types that require slightly different blends of carbohydrates fat, and proteins. These can be divided into two basic groups one the high complex carbohydrate low-fat and the other being high-protein low carbohydrate. If you’re in a high complex carbohydrate low-fat group then foods like eggs, butter, salt, redmeat and some spices could be a problem. If you’re in the high protein low carb group than refined carbohydrates sugars grains could be a problem. So it’s important to know what body type you have as you review the following list of anti-inflammatory foods. Also any food that you’re allergic to can be pro-inflammatory even on the list of anti-inflammatory foods. For instance the nightshade family can be pro-inflammatory if you’re allergic to them. They include: potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), many species of sweet and hot peppers (all species of Capsicum, including Capsicum annum), and eggplant (Solanum melongena). Less well know, but equally genuine nightshade foods include ground cherries (all species of Physalis), tomatillos (Physallis ixocapra), garden huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum), tamarillos (Cyphomandra betacea), pepinos (Solanum muricatum), and naranjillas (Solanum quitoense). Pimentos (also called pimientos) belong to the nightshade family, and usually come from the pepper plant Capsicum annum. Pimento cheese and pimento-stuffed olives are therefore examples of foods that should be classified as containing nightshade components. Although the sweet potato, whose scientific name is Ipomoea batatas, belongs to the same plant order as the nightshades (Polemoniales), it does not belong to the Solanaceae family found in this order, but to a different plant family called Convolvulaceae.

Inflammation is one of the body's defense mechanisms. Inflammation results in increased blood flow in response to infection and certain chronic conditions. Symptoms of inflammation include redness, swelling, pain, and heat.
But when inflammation becomes uncontrolled then it becomes the soil for chronic disease. Besides foods, stress, obesity, toxicity and an acidic chemistry help produce uncontrolled inflammation in the body.
Diseases that arise from inflammatory chemistry can be the following: Autoimmune disorders, Obesity, allergies, Alzheimer's, anemia, ankylosing spondylitis, asthma, autism, arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, celiac, Crohn's disease, congestive heart failure, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, eczema, fibromyalgia, fibrosis, gallbladder disease, Gerd, Guillain-Barré , Hashimoto's thyroiditis, heart attack, kidney failure, lupus, multiple sclerosis, neuropathy, pancreatitis, psoriasis, polymyalgia rheumatica, rheumatoid arthritis, scleroderma, stroke, surgical complications, many other pain disorders.

Specifics vary from diet to diet, but in general anti-inflammatory diets suggest:
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. (Match with body type)
- Minimize saturated and trans fats.
- Eat a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish or fish oil supplements and walnuts.
- Watch your intake of refined carbohydrates such as pasta and white rice.
- Eat plenty of whole grains such as brown rice and bulgur wheat. (Match with body type)
- Eat lean protein sources such as chicken; cut back on red meat and full-fat dairy foods. (Match with body type)
- Avoid refined foods and processed foods.
- Spice it up. Ginger, curry, and other spices can have an anti-inflammatory effect.

Navigating through lies, politics and profit in an attempt to find better health.

Big food and big Pharma have lied to you to increase their bottom line. In the attempt to understand health and the principles that lead to better health you have to navigate through conflicting messages that attempt to brainwash you into lining the pockets of big food and big Pharma to the deficit of you and your family's health.
To give an example of this we will talk about heart disease and osteoporosis.
CLICK PIC
If I ask most people on the street what was the main contributor to heart disease then cholesterol would be the first thing out of most people's mouth. If I ask you the number one way of maintaining healthy bones most people would say consuming more calcium. My question to you is: did you arrive at these conclusions by your own in-depth study of the research and science or have you opened up a medical textbook to determine how these conditions develop and exactly what these conditions are? Was it by extensive research that you come to these conclusions? Of course not you have been taught by television, radio and newsprint and even doctors.
CLICK PIC
Let me give you some facts: one of the largest studies, I'm talking real-life studies not theoretical studies, was a Harvard study of 78,000 nurses. The facts are the nurses that consume the most calcium had the most bone fractures. Asian women living in their own culture eating their own cultural diet get one third the calcium that American women get and osteoporosis is extremely rare in their society. When they move to the US and incorporate the US diet they become the top risk group for osteoporosis.
CLICK PIC
The next fact is the cholesterol theory of heart disease first gained its acceptance in the 1950s. Medical nutritionist Dr. Keyes supposedly correlated the level of fat intake with heart disease in six countries and even though his theory was rejected at the time he used political maneuvering by becoming part of the Heart Association and finally got his theory accepted. When you look at his original research you will see a study of 23 countries trying to make this correlation and he had to eliminate 16 of these countries in order to make his theory look correct statistically. When you add back the 16 countries he conveniently eliminated the correlation just doesn't stand up. And between the 1950s and about 1976 there are six different major studies trying to correlate fat in the diet with heart disease and they have all failed. In fact every major study from 1969 through the present has failed to support the cholesterol theory.
CLICK PIC
One of the longest continual studies is ongoing today started in 1948 in Framingham Massachusetts. This study involves 5000 residents and has shown some amazing contradictions to the cholesterol theory of heart disease. In fact this study has shown after the age 47 the patients with the highest cholesterol outlive the patients with lower cholesterol levels. This study also shows those who ate more saturated fat weighed less and had more energy than those on the low-fat diet.

In April 1996 the second International symposium on dietary fats and oils consumption in health and disease was hosted by the Southwest University medical school in Dallas Texas. Researchers from around the world presented their findings on the effects of fat in the human diet. After the presentations showing the subjects following the low-fat diet hadn't got rid of their obesity, and not lowered their cholesterol levels, had lowered their HDL levels (the good cholesterol), and had increase their blood levels of triglycerides (a major risk factor for heart disease), the moderators of the symposium pronounce the low-fat diet a failure.

The strongest evidence points to inflammation as the soil in which obesity, diabetes, and heart disease develop from. So strategies to reduce inflammation will lead to the best chance of better health. This is where diet and lifestyle are very important. There are several factors that lead to inflammation in the body which include: junk food (highly refined carbohydrates), hydrogenated oils that include trans fats, elevation in bad prostaglandins and hormones like insulin which are produced by the overabundance of refined vegetable oils and refined carbohydrates and sugar, and the reduced amount of helpful antioxidants and pH balancing foods and beverages that reduce the excess acidity of the body.
CLICK PIC
So as we look to diet and lifestyle (because even too much aerobic exercise without appropriate amounts of antioxidants in the diet can also lead to inflammation) then selecting the proper diet is crucial. Unfortunately there is no one diet that fits everybody and so you need to match the right ratio of fats, carbohydrates and proteins that fit your genetic makeup.

The body typing system that I use consists of four different body types: thyroid, gonadal, adrenal and pituitary. These four types tend to correspond the four personality types: Sanguine (This type is characterized by spontaneity, optimism, enthusiasm, high energy, mental flexibility, novelty seeking, impulsiveness and curiosity)., Phlegmatic (These people are mainly defined by their social skills, such as their ability to express themselves and read other people face expressions and body language. They do well at connecting facts and seeing “the big picture”. They are nurturing, sympathetic, agreeable and emotionally expressive). Choleric (This type is associated with testosterone, which is also present in men and women, but more so in men. These people are direct, focused, tough, analytical, logical and strategic. They have a great deal of courage and like to compete, often against each other. They often have square jaws, high cheekbones and high foreheads and love to use words like “intellect”, “ambition” and “challenge”) and Melancholic (tend to be calm, loyal and orderly, just as their personality name sounds. They are cautious and conventional. These men and women inherited genes in the serotonin system and their favorite words are “family”, “loyal”, “respect”, “caring”, “values” and “moral”). Most people are unique blend of four different types of personality, where all of the traits are present to some extent.
CLICK PIC
These four body types can be divided into two groups. We can call one group the protein group (about 70% of US) and the other the complex carbohydrate group (30%) the protein group tends to be sensitive to carbohydrates particularly refined sugars and grains. The carbohydrate group tends to be sensitive to fats (eggs, butter and red meat), salt and spices. So a diet too high in sugars and grain can lead to inflammation in the protein type. A diet high in fats and oils can lead to inflammation in the carbohydrate type.
CLICK PIC
So simply learning which body type you are and focusing on the correct ratio of fats, carbohydrates and proteins you can make a significant difference in your health.

There are five laws of health that we encourage our patients to follow to regain and maintain good health over a lifetime. These laws are diet, exercise, rest and relaxation, positive spiritual and mental attitude and a healthy balanced nervous system.
CLICK PIC
In the area diet this includes eating your body type diet but also consuming enough water for your body weight. In order to determine how much water you need to drink you divide your weight in half and consider that answer in ounces. For instance a hundred pound person their cleansing dose of fluids would be 50 ounces 80% of that would give you the minimum fluids they should drink which is 40 ounces. Dehydration can cause a whole host of conditions and cause any condition your suffering with to be a little worse. Since the EPA recommends boiling city water before drinking we encourage our patients to drink filtered water. Also when it comes to water you can get water in different pH ranges. If you're dealing with an inflammatory chemistry your body is going to be acidic. And so alkaline water can be very effective in the overall management of your body chemistry.
CLICK PIC
As we consider water we also consider detoxification because we live in a toxic environment. And so most patients need to undergo some level of detoxification in order to remove important stressors in their ability to maintain normal function and better health. So drinking your cleansing dose of fluids can be helpful in detoxification. And when it comes to how much alkaline water we recommend you should drink about a liter a day. Too much alkaline water can produce negative effects for some people.
CLICK PIC
When it comes to exercise there are exercises that work best with different body types.
CLICK PIC
Rest and relaxation would also include quality sleep. New research indicates that sleep is one way that our brains are able to detoxify. But there's a growing list of health problems that are associated with the lack of proper sleep. The average adults should get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night.
CLICK PIC
When it comes to positive mental and spiritual attitude than spiritual disciplines like meditation, prayer and helping others can be very important. When it comes to moods neurotransmitters can be important. Serotonin is considered an important neurotransmitter when it comes to depression or anxiety. What most people don't realize is your gut is your second brain and 80 percentage of serotonin is produced in your gut. Now the serotonin in your brain and the serotonin in your gut don't appear to intermingle. But when the level is out of balance in one area it will affect the other. Probiotics are extremely important in maintaining good gut health; your gut also is your second immune system.

Healthy nervous system is an obvious necessity based on scientific understanding that the nervous system controls and coordinates everything in your body. It's just outside of chiropractic or osteopathic research most doctors don't know how to improve nervous system function. It is been my experience over the past 38 years in practice that through chiropractic adjustments we can enhance the body's function significantly. In fact the average chiropractic patient undergoing regular care has an immune system anywhere from 200% more effective than the average person on the street. Also recent research has shown chiropractic treatments are one of the few interventions that can raise the level of DNA repair chemistry in your body to help prevent disease and extend lifespan.

IN THE NEWS: MARIJUANA USE DURING PREGNANCY AFFECTS BABY'S BRAIN Using marijuana during pregnancy could affect a baby's brain development by interfering with how brain cells are wired, a new study in mice and human tissue suggests. Researchers studied marijuana's effects on mice and brain tissue from human fetuses, and found that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, interferes with the formation of connections between nerve cells in the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher thinking skills and forming memories. Previous long-term studies have shown that children exposed to marijuana in the womb may have an increased risk of showing cognitive effects, seeking out drugs, or having attention deficit disorder, anxiety or depression, according to the study.
WELLNESS: WHAT IS GARLIC GOOD FOR? With garlic, you get an excellent supply of manganese – 23% of the daily value – containing essential enzymes and antioxidants that perform all kinds of amazing feats in the body, including the healthy formation of bones and connective tissues, bone metabolism, calcium absorption, and proper thyroid function, just to name a few. Garlic also contains 17% of the daily value in vitamin B6, and 15% in vitamin C, while allocating good amounts of calcium, phosphorus, and selenium. Numerous studies show garlic’s amazing health potential in nearly every area of the body, from removing heavy metals to the prevention of numerous ailments, such as the common cold, hardening of the arteries, and gangrene, and even in slowing the aging process. While garlic has long been acknowledged as a healthy food by proponents of both natural and conventional medicine, one study noted its cancer-fighting and cancer preventive qualities against several kinds, including colon, stomach, lung, and colorectal cancers, and possibly breast cancer . Another study documented the use of fresh garlic, garlic powder, and garlic oil used worldwide for centuries for protection against bacterial, viral, parasitic infection, to bolster the immune system, discourage tumor growth, and rid the cells of free radicals with its antioxidant capabilities .
CHIROPRACTIC: KIDS AND CHIROPRACTIC A study published in the March 29, 2004 peer reviewed journal, The Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, (JVSR), showed that chiropractic adjustments had a positive effect on children with acute ear infections. In the study 21 children were examined. All these children showed acute inflammation in the inner ear with a red and bulging tympanic membrane accompanied by an increased mean oral temperature of over 100 degrees F. The results of the study showed that after the chiropractic adjustments, the red and bulging tympanic membrane returned to normal in 95% of the children and a decrease in average oral temperature to 98.6 degrees F.

The war against illegal drug use has been going on for decades, but now it seems the “war on drugs” should have a new target… Legal drug addiction is taking lives in record numbers.
In the UK, 1 million people are addicted to over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription painkillers and tranquilizers; that’s significantly more than the number addicted to illegal drugs.1
In the US, it’s a similar story. There were four times more deaths among women from prescription painkiller overdose than for cocaine and heroin deaths combined in 2010.2
Legal drug addiction is tricky because it often starts out with a prescription obtained from a doctor. Many people find themselves addicted to painkillers before they even realize what’s happened, often after taking the drugs to recover from surgery or treat chronic back, or other, pain.
Three Factors That Might Increase Your Risk of Becoming Addicted to Painkillers
Painkillers work by interacting with receptors in your brain resulting in a decrease in the perception of pain. They are inherently addictive, as they also create a temporary feeling of euphoria, followed by dysphoria, that can easily lead to physical dependence and addiction. However, why certain people become addicted while others get by unfazed has remained a mystery.
Researchers from the University of Derby set out to determine what might be influencing painkiller addiction and dependence by conducting an anonymous survey of people who had pain and had used painkillers in the last month. They found three predictors that they said identified those most at risk of developing painkiller dependence. It included those who:3
- Used prescription painkillers more frequently
- Have a prior history of substance abuse (often unrelated to pain relief)
- Are less accepting of pain or less able to cope with pain
According to the authors, pain, prior substance abuse and psychological factors may all play a role in a person’s likelihood of addiction. They concluded:
“Based on these findings, a preliminary model is presented with three types of influence on the development of painkiller dependence: 1) pain leading to painkiller use, 2) risk factors for substance-related problems irrespective of pain, and 3) psychological factors related to pain.”
Painkiller Addiction Knows No Bounds
The face of drug addiction in the US and around the globe is changing. You can certainly not gauge who is an addict by looks or occupation. In fact, painkiller addiction spans all ages and walks of life.
For instance, a significant number of older adults, particularly those in the baby boomer generation, are struggling with both illicit and prescription drug abuse.
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) reported that the number of people in their 50s who are abusing illicit or prescription drugs more than doubled from 2002 to 2010, going from 2.7 to 5.8 percent in this population. Among those 65 and older, 414,000 used such drugs in 2010.4
Among seniors, the health risks of all medications are increased, because the body takes longer to break down and get rid of the drug than it does in a younger person. As a result, the drug stays in an older person's system longer, where it can cause even greater damage.
At the other end of the spectrum, one in four teens has misused a prescription drug at least once in their lifetime, according to survey results from the partnership at Drugfree.org and the MetLife Foundation.5 Prescription drugs don’t hold the same stigma as illegal recreational drugs, even though they can be just as deadly, leading teens to regard the former as a “safe” way to get high.
Prescription drugs have even been described by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy as the “drug of choice” second only to marijuana for today’s teens.6
Sadly, some teens pay for this one “bad” decision with their lives. Drug fatalities more than doubled among teens and young adults between 2000 and 2008, and these drug-induced fatalities are not being driven by illegal street drugs. Data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that the most commonly abused prescription drugs like OxyContin, Vicodin, Xanax, and Soma now cause more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined.7
And while men are still more likely to die from prescription painkiller overdose, women are quickly catching up. More than 6,600 women, or 18 women every day, died from a prescription painkiller overdose in 2010. The problem, once primarily seen in inner cities, is now spanning to rural areas, hitting people of all ethnic backgrounds and income levels, from business professionals to single mothers to retirees.
Painkiller Addiction Can Easily Lead to Death
Painkillers (opioids) like morphine, codeine, oxycodone, hydrocodone, and fentanyl are one of the most commonly abused drug classes. These drugs are not only addictive, they can lead to slowed breathing and death if too much is taken, and the risks are compounded if you add alcohol to the equation.
Many are not aware that pain-killing drugs like fentanyl are actually 100 times more potent than natural opioids like morphine, making the addictive potential and side effects associated with prescription drug use much higher. And it doesn’t always take extremely excessive use, or even very long-term use, to have a fatal overdose.
For many, once you start taking these drugs it sets off a cascade of reactions in your body that make it extremely difficult to stop. Dr. Sanjay Gupta, associate chief of neurosurgery at Grady Memorial Hospital and CNN's chief medical correspondent, reported:8
“…after just a few months of taking the pills, something starts to change in the body. The effectiveness wears off, and patients typically report getting only about 30% pain relief, compared with when they started. Even more concerning, a subgroup of these patients develop a condition known as hyperalgesia, an increased sensitivity to pain.
As you might guess, all of this creates a situation where the person starts to take more and more pills. And even though they are no longer providing much pain relief, they can still diminish the body's drive to breathe. If you are awake you may not notice it, but if you fall asleep with too many of these pills in your system, you never wake up. Add alcohol, and the problem is exponentially worse. People who take pain or sleeping pills and drink a couple glasses of wine are playing Russian roulette.”
Because such overdoses now kill more people than cocaine and heroin combined, more US states are now taking action to try and stop this growing problem. As USA Today reported:9
- Alabama has instituted three new laws that give more medical personnel access to the state’s prescription monitoring program database, as well as tighten regulations on pain management clinics and making “doctor shopping” to get multiple prescriptions punishable by jail time
- Indiana instituted new oversight powers to the state attorney general on pain management clinics and is considering mandatory annual drug screening of people prescribed opioids
- Kentucky now requires pain clinics to be licensed and mandates that physicians check electronic prescription records before writing opioid prescriptions
- Washington state has set dosage limits for physicians who prescribe pain medications, and prescriptions over a certain amount must be approved by a pain specialist
- New York has a requirement that physicians and pharmacists check the state’s drug-monitoring program database before prescribing opioids
Managing Your Pain the Drug-Free Way
Many of those addicted to painkillers started taking the drugs not to get high, but to control pain – often back pain. The solution, then, is to avoid taking the drugs in the first place, an option many physicians neglect to offer to their pain patients. If you are suffering from pain, I suggest you work with a knowledgeable health care practitioner to determine what's really triggering your pain, and then address the underlying cause. If you have chronic pain, try these first, before even thinking about prescription painkillers of any kind.
- Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which is a drug-free approach for pain management of all kinds. EFT borrows from the principles of acupuncture, in that it helps you balance out your subtle energy system.
It helps resolve underlying, often subconscious, negative emotions that may be exacerbating your physical pain. By stimulating (tapping) well-established acupuncture points with your fingertips, you rebalance your energy system, which tends to dissipate pain.
- Astaxanthin: One of the most effective fat-soluble antioxidants known. It has very potent anti-inflammatory properties and in many cases works far more effectively than anti-inflammatory drugs. Higher doses are typically required and one may need 8 mg or more per day to achieve this benefit.
- Ginger: This herb has potent anti-inflammatory activity and offers pain relief and stomach-settling properties. Fresh ginger works well steeped in boiling water as a tea or grated into vegetable juice.
- Curcumin: In a study of osteoarthritis patients, those who added 200 mg of curcumin a day to their treatment plan had reduced pain and increased mobility.10 A past study also found that a turmeric extract composed of curcuminoids blocked inflammatory pathways, effectively preventing the overproduction of a protein that triggers swelling and pain.
- Boswellia: Also known as boswellin or "Indian frankincense," this herb contains specific active anti-inflammatory ingredients. This is one of my personal favorites as I have seen it work well with many rheumatoid arthritis patients.
- Krill Oil: The omega-3 fats EPA and DHA contained in krill oil have been found by many animal and clinical studies to have anti-inflammatory properties that may be beneficial for pain.
- Bromelain: This enzyme, found in pineapples, is a natural anti-inflammatory. It can be taken in supplement form, but eating fresh pineapple, including some of the bromelain-rich stem, may also be helpful.
- Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO): This oil, found in fish and dairy butter, acts as a "joint lubricant" and an anti-inflammatory. I have used this for myself to relieve ganglion cysts and a mild annoying carpal tunnel syndrome that pops up when I type too much on non-ergonomic keyboards. I used a topical preparation for this.
- Evening Primrose, Black Currant, and Borage Oils: These contain the essential fatty acid gamma linolenic acid (GLA), which is useful for treating arthritic pain.
- Cayenne Cream: Also called capsaicin cream, this spice comes from dried hot peppers. It alleviates pain by depleting the body's supply of substance P, a chemical component of nerve cells that transmits pain signals to your brain.
- Methods such as yoga, acupuncture, meditation, hot and cold packs, and even holding hands can also result in astonishing pain relief without any drugs.

DIET: VITAMIN E MAY OFFER BENEFITS FOR PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE The study compared the effects of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and the Alzheimer's drug memantine, to assess which one might be more effective for slowing progression of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease in patients taking an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. Follow up was just over two years. Results showed that clinical progression of Alzheimer's slowed by 19 percent per year in the group receiving vitamin E, compared with placebo. (This delay translated into just over six months of delayed progression over the two-year follow-up period.) It's worth noting that this isn't the first time memantine, sold under the brand name Namenda, has been found to be more or less useless for mild to moderate Alzheimer's. The drug is approved for moderate to severe cases, but doctors often prescribe it off-label for mild Alzheimer's cases. It's even prescribed off-label for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is frequently the prelude to Alzheimer's.
IN THE NEWS: POOR SLEEP LINKED TO TEEN MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS Getting too little sleep might be a sign of - or even a contributor to - emotional problems, anxiety and suicidal thoughts among teens, according to a large study from Europe. Based on data about the sleep habits of nearly 12,000 teens across 11 European countries, researchers found that a student with suicidal thoughts could be predicted to sleep about 36 minutes less each night compared to counterparts with no suicidal thoughts. For teens with severe emotional problems, the amount of sleep lost would be about 30 minutes, on average, each night. Lack of sleep among teens has been linked in other research to many negative health effects, including high blood pressure. And researchers have found that teens are generally going to bed later. Past research has also shown that teens need between eight and a half and nine hours of sleep each night. Teens in the current study averaged about eight hours of sleep.

IN THE NEWS: SIDE EFFECTS FROM ADHD DRUGS MAY BE WORSE THAN ADHD The side effects from ADHD medications are often far worse than the condition itself. These drugs actually rival illegal street drugs in terms of their dangerous risks to health, which include: Permanent brain damage, Cardio toxicity and liver damage, Cancer, Changes in personality, depression, and/or hallucinations, Heart attack and stroke, Sudden death and suicide. This is a more than 400 percent increase in ER visits due to adverse reactions to such drugs in a mere six years! Drugs prescribed for ADHD are not "mild" by any means. These are hard-core, "class 2" narcotics, regulated by the Drug Enforcement Agency as a controlled substance because they can lead to dependence. The majority of kids diagnosed with ADHD will be prescribed these potentially dangerous drugs, the most common being Ritalin. By definition, Ritalin stimulates your central nervous system and may certainly interfere with the delicate and complex workings of your brain and personality.
WELLNESS: SLEEP HELPS DETOX THE BRAIN We’ve known for some time that sleep is essential for forming and consolidating memories and that it plays a central role in the formation of new neuronal connections and the pruning of old ones. But that hardly seems enough to risk death-by-leopard-in-the-night. “If sleep was just to remember what you did yesterday, that wouldn’t be important enough,” Dr. Nedergaard explains. In a series of new studies, published this fall in the journal Science, the Nedergaard lab may at last be shedding light on just what it is that would be important enough. Sleep, it turns out, may play a crucial role in our brain’s physiological maintenance. As your body sleeps, your brain is quite actively playing the part of mental janitor: It’s clearing out all of the junk that has accumulated as a result of your daily thinking. In a series of new studies on mice, her team discovered exactly that: When the mouse brain is sleeping or under anesthesia, it’s busy cleaning out the waste that accumulated while it was awake. On average, we’re getting one to two hours less sleep a night than we did 50 to 100 years ago and 38 minutes less on weeknights than we did as little as 10 years ago. At the extreme end, the result could be the acceleration of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
CHIROPRACTIC: ADJUSTMENTS HAVE A POSITIVE EFFECT ON THE BRAIN A study presented at the International Research And Philosophy Symposium held at Sherman College of Straight Chiropractic finds that Chiropractic adjustments have a positive effect on the Central Nervous System (CNS), specifically on the four primary frequencies of brain function. Brain function is measured on four primary frequencies: Beta, Alpha, Theta and Delta. Alpha waves reflect the meditative, relaxing healing mode. Beta waves represent the active, busy brain. Theta waves reflect light sleep, relaxation and conceptual development. Delta waves represent the brain activity during deep sleep, repair mode and energy storage. After receiving a chiropractic adjustment, post EEG scans revealed improvement in all areas of the volunteer’s brain function. Particularly, the researchers noticed an increase in the meditative Alpha brainwave patterns that are associated with a greater degree of relaxation, health and healing. WELLNESS/PREVENTION: ASPIRIN RISKS MAY OUTWEIGH BENEFITS IN HEALTHY ADULTS Healthy adults who take daily aspirin to stave off heart disease may be inviting more harm than benefit, according to a new review of past studies. "Too many healthy people think that aspirin will prevent heart attacks and cancer," said Dr. Peter Sandercock of the Centre for Clinical Brain Sciences at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland. "This shows that if you are healthy, with no symptoms of cardiovascular disease, then it's not sensible to take regular aspirin. It won't improve your health," he told Reuters Health.
IN THE NEWS: HAPPINESS AND LAUGHTER ARE NATURAL IMMUNE BOOSTERS There are many studies supporting the belief that people with an upbeat and positive perspective tend to be healthier and enjoy longer lives. For example, in one study, the tendency to always expect the worst was linked to a 25 percent higher risk of dying before the age of 65. In one of Professor Cole’s happiness studies, participants answered questions about the frequency of certain emotional states, covering two different categories or types of happiness known to psychologists as: Hedonic well-being (characterized by happiness gleaned from pleasurable experiences, such as sex) Eudaimonic well-being (originating with Aristotle, this form of happiness comes from activities that bring you a greater sense of purpose, life meaning, or self-actualization ) Interestingly, while both are positive emotional states associated with happiness, the gene expressions they produced were not identical. Those whose sense of happiness was rooted in the eudaimonic camp were found to have favorable gene-expression profiles, while hedonic well-being produced gene profiles similar to those seen in people experiencing stress due to adversity.

Over the years I've experience the power chiropractic in improving the health of both my own children and the children I've had the privilege to serve. We live in an ever increasingly dangerous healthcare system. The common use of toxic and dangerous drugs and the overuse and misuse of medication like antibiotics are having a serious deficit effect on the health of our kids. Today more and more kids go to school drugged by design. And it seems to be only getting worse.
There is a simple glaring problem with this approach, drugs don't produce health. Drugs might modify symptoms, at a cost, but outside of crisis care their effects are temporary and their side effects can be long-term. Probably one of the drugs that have been abused the most is antibiotics. In a vast number of cases where antibiotics are prescribed, they are prescribed in violation of all the latest research concerning the appropriate use of antibiotics. Research shows that antibiotics don't work for colds or flu's, most conditions where there's a cough, most bronchitis or runny noses and most ear infections. Probably 70 to 80% of the time when these symptoms are presented the pediatrician or other doctor writes a prescription for antibiotics even though the doctor knows they are inappropriate. Why? When the doctor is interrogated afterwards they usually blame the parent for demanding it. The sad truth is most parents just want the appropriate care and since the medical doctor doesn't have any more training in how to address these issues without drugs (and drugs don't help conditions like these) then they feel impotent if they don't write some kind of prescription. Buyer beware!
The sad fact is that pharmaceutical companies have taken over the healthcare system and if you're not an informed consumer then you will line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and damage your kid's own health. Disease is not a drug deficiency, diseases is a deficiency within the body. Chiropractic physicians have the training to reestablish the body's own communication systems necessary to keep the system health. Chiropractic physicians have the training in diet, allergies, detox protocols and nutritional therapies to reestablish normal function of the systems of the body including the immune system. Antibiotics weaken the immune system. Even when antibiotics are needed to kill an aggressive bacterial infection their side effects can leave the person's immune system weaker and actually more prone to reoccurring infections. Chiropractic physicians have the training to help reverse the negative effects of antibiotics and to reestablish a stronger immune system.
When it comes to preventing disease drugs are the worst approach you could take. Disease prevention is a lifestyle, diet and chiropractic centered strategy. Since science has proven overwhelmingly that disease is related to lifestyle and environment then that's where you need to work if you want to improve your child's health.
Unfortunately the food industry is not your friend. Virtually all the foods marketed to kids will wreak havoc with their health. Most of these foods are extremely high in refined carbohydrates which depress your child's immune system and develop the chemistry prone to disease. By simply feeding your kids natural foods: eggs, vegetables, fruits, meat, whole grains in moderation, seeds, nuts and some dairy in moderation you can establish a chemistry of health in your child. Junk food like most cereals, candies, refined grains in most noodles, pizzas, white bread, crackers etc. leads to a chemistry that is prone to disease. The fact that a lot of kids go through periods of time of “apparent health” is a miracle of the creation we call our bodies.
One of the most important things you can do is make sure your kids drink enough clean water and stay away from pops, fruit juices and fake fruit drinks and fructose that come from highly refined corn syrup. Stevia is a great sugar substitute and can be used in a number of things to give it a sweet taste without disrupting your kids’ blood sugar handling system. Marked deviations in normal blood sugar levels will weaken the immune system and affect your kid's moods. A lot of kids suffer from focus issues at school, hyperactivity or moodiness simply because they don't get enough quality proteins to make neurotransmitters, because of the high sugar content of their diet they can't maintain normal blood sugar levels which can lead to depression and moodiness as the sugar drops. Also their intestinal system suffers due to the amount of junk food they consume which disrupts the normal serotonin levels that the gut produces which in turn affects moods. Whole foods prevent all of these issues.
Chiropractic adjustments can have a dramatic effect on how the nervous system expresses emotions and that's why chiropractic care has helped so many kids whose schoolwork suffers from hyperactivity and attention deficit syndrome.
Studies show that chiropractic patients receiving regular chiropractic care have a much stronger immune system than the average public. And so if your child is not receiving chiropractic care you're not giving them the best chance to express their body’s potential when it comes to health as well as performance both physically and mentally.
A chiropractic physician will not compromise your child's health by recommending dangerous and toxic substances. Health is a natural expression of life within the body. The chiropractic adjustment enhances the expression of life to all the cells of the body. Nutritional therapy, detoxification, homeopathic allergy treatments, homeopathic emotional treatment all work together to maximize your child's health.
When's the last time your child had a chiropractic checkup?

DIET: AMERICAN HEALTHCARE SYSTEM COULD SAVE BILLIONS EACH YEAR THROUGH APPROPRIATE USE OF DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS A report, titled: "Smart Prevention—Health Care Cost Savings Resulting from the Targeted Use of Dietary Supplements" was produced through a grant from the Council for Responsible Nutrition Foundation. As reported by Drug Store News:“[The report] examined four different chronic diseases and the potential for healthcare cost savings when US adults 55 years and older, diagnosed with these chronic diseases, used one of eight different dietary supplement regimens. It demonstrated that supplementation at preventive intake levels in high-risk populations can reduce the number of disease-associated medical events, representing the potential for hundreds of millions — and in some cases, billions — of dollars in savings.” Steve Mister, president of the Council for Responsible Nutrition Foundation told Drug Store News:“Chronic disease takes a huge toll on people’s quality of life, and the healthcare system spends a tremendous amount of money treating chronic disease, but has failed to focus on ways to reduce those costs through prevention. We already knew that the dietary supplements identified in the report can play a role in reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases; we felt compelled to find out if they could also contribute to healthcare cost savings by reducing the medical events associated with those conditions. This new report says emphatically that they do.”
WELLNESS: DO ANTIDEPRESSANTS INHIBIT ROMANCE? A study published in the International Journal of Neuropsychopharmacology revealed that participants taking antidepressants reported an 80% decrease in the ability to cry, get angry, worry or care about another person’s feelings. Rutgers University anthropologist Helen Fisher and psychiatrist James Thomson conducted a study that showed how women taking antidepressants judged extremely attractive men as not that attractive. Any feelings of passion and romance had been dulled—the side effects of antidepressants! Having conducted numerous studies on the brain’s link to love Fisher concludes that antidepressants “can jeopardize your feelings. You are tampering with the mechanisms that can help sustain feelings of romantic love and deep feelings of attachment.”
CHIROPRACTIC: HOW AUTOPSIES PROVED THE MIRACLES OF CHIROPRACTIC
Back in 1921, a medical doctor, Henry Winsor, set about to understand if, in fact, there was a correlation between certain areas of the spine having misalignments (the official term is subluxations) and malfunction of organs. The University of Pennsylvania gave Dr. Winsor permission to carry out his experiments. In a series of three studies he dissected a total of seventy-five human and twenty-two cat cadavers. The following are Dr. Winsor’s results:“221 structures other than the spine were found diseased. Of these, 212 were observed to belong to the same sympathetic (nerve) segments as the vertebrae in curvature. In other words, there was nearly a 100% correlation between minor curvatures of the spine and diseases of the internal organs.”

VEGA testing is a simple biofeedback procedure. Your nervous system is a highly sophisticated information retrieval and intelligent response output organ. Your nervous system is a bio computer more sophisticated any computer made by man. Part of the nervous system retrieves and analyzes information the other part responds to that information.
CLICK PIC
During the VEGA test your nervous system is exposed to several different substances that it either responds to or doesn't. Probably the easiest way to explain this is if someone has an allergy to ragweed. In an allergy test with VEGA testing we would expose the body to the vibratory rates of ragweed. Because the body recognizes this as an allergen we would monitor a response.
CLICK PIC
This is an objective response that is repeatable. We observe this response in the apparent change in arm or leg lengths. The response of tapping the knee and observing the reflex extension of the lower leg is the exact same reflex we observe. If you elicited the reflex at the knee with the leg straight you would observe a temporary shortening of that leg as the muscles contracted. This biofeedback reflex mechanism is the basis we use for monitoring in VEGA testing.
HISTORY
CLICK PIC
VEGA Testing is based on the phenomenon of “medicine testing” found by Dr. Reinhardt Voll, M.D., a German medical doctor, in his work with electrical acupuncture. Dr. Helmut Schimmel, M.D., also of Germany, later developed Dr. Voll’s work into a system of substance testing now known as VEGA testing.
VEGA testing is based on the effect of electrical resistance changes of the skin on certain acupuncture points (low electrical resistance areas) in response to differing substances that are either beneficial or detrimental to the body.
CLICK PIC
Dr. George Goodheart, D.C., U.S.A., discovered in the 1950’s that the muscles of the body, in the presence of certain substances, would either become weaker or stronger. This finding is part of a diagnostic system called "Applied Kinesiology". Based on this phenomena, a simple arm or leg check can monitor the body’s response to any given substance.
Because this particular procedure is more objective and can be performed repetitively without fatiguing the body, this is the system that we use.
VEGA TESTING’S SCOPE
VEGA testing is a multi-faceted diagnostic procedure. It can be used to determine if a patient has an allergic tendency, and, if they do have allergies, what particular antigens they are allergic to. VEGA testing allows us to find the major organs that are under the most stress. It also helps to determine the level of stress of each organ or part of the body. It can monitor the progress that a patient is making, without having to re-run expensive laboratory tests.
CLICK PIC
The VEGA test method allows for nutritional evaluation to determine if there are serious mineral or vitamin deficiencies, as well as food overloads, e.g., over-consumption of salts or sugars, proteins, etc. VEGA testing also gives some information about the emotional status of a patient. We can determine if the nervous system is being stressed by some strong deep emotions, and what possible remedies might be effective in helping the emotional processing.
The VEGA test method allows for determining what nutritional products or remedies might be effective in the treatment of certain conditions. VEGA test method also allows for the determination of what is called, “Causal Chain”, or the domino effect that is taking place in the body. Most of the time when one organ malfunctions, it affects another organ, which affects another, etc. To find the original, or most stressed organ, can be very important in understanding a patient’s particular health problems.
VEGA test method is a quick, easy method of developing an acupuncture diagnosis as to which meridians or electrical circuits within the body are malfunctioning.
CLICK PIC
When a patient is showing signs of an infection, VEGA testing allows for a quick evaluation to determine what is behind these acute symptoms - whether the source is a virus, bacteria, yeast overgrowth, food sensitivity, or an allergy response.
This method allows evaluation of the immune system, showing which organs in the immune system are under the most stress and need the most support.
CLICK PIC
We can determine also if a patient is suffering from geopathic stress. This condition is due to radiations that might be influencing our health because of underground streams or mineral deposits or gases from underground; these can affect our bodies in subtle ways.
CLICK PIC
Through VEGA testing we can also tell if dental fillings are having an adverse effect on the body due to mercury leaching into the system. It will indicate the presence of a toxic overload, and tell if that overload might be due simply to metabolic toxins, or if it is from heavy metals or insecticides that have entered through the environment’s food or water supply.
VEGA testing also can give us an idea of which areas of the body (which arteries, etc.) may be being affected by excessive cholesterol levels.
BIOLOGICAL SCORE (AGE)
CLICK PIC
In the Vega test system the concept of bio-score, based on evaluating the body’s response to 21 ampules for toxic load of the body, relates to the level of over-all stress or disease within the body. If we gave each organ that was malfunctioning a numerical value, then added them all up, that is the idea behind the bio-score.
CLICK PIC
By having a score like this when starting therapy we can evaluate our treatment program any time we would like. As the body heals itself the score will reflect this by going down. If the score becomes fixed then a change in the treatment program becomes necessary. The bio-score is based on the body's reaction to one or more diagnostic ampoules in a set of 21. The more ampoules that the body reacts to, the more problems that represents. If you react to two ampoules, say number 10 and 21, then your score would be 21x2. If you reacted to 3, 10, 16, 21 then your score would be 21x4. Knowing each number within your score is not important, just your top number and how many, tell the story. In those two examples, 21x2 would be better than 21x4. The following tells what to expect with different readings:
TWO SCORES: PROGNOSIS EXCELLENT MILD IMMUNE STRESS,2-6 MONTHS OF CARE.
THREE SCORES: CHRONIC IMMUNE STRESS,6-9 MONTHS OF CARE.
FOUR SCORES: IMMUNE SYSTEM NOT COPING, ADRENAL STRESS, ALLERGIES, INFLAMMATIONS, CANDIDIASIS, FATIGUE, 9-18 MONTHS CARE..
FIVE SCORES: IMMUNE AND ADRENAL STRESS VERY SEVERE, AUTO-IMMUNE LIKELY,1 1/2-2 1/2 yrs. 0F CARE.
SIX SCORES: PROGNOSIS POOR, SERIOUS DISEASE LIKELY, SLOW RECOVERY, 2 1/2 +yrs. OF CARE.
THE ABOVE WAS BASED ON A LARGE SAMPLE OF PATIENTS AROUND THE WORLD . YOUR RECOVERY MAY BE FASTER.

How Does Color Therapy Work?

Although we would live, we would probably not be healthy if we lived in total darkness without any light. Light can affect our mood. Most of us feel better and more cheerful on a sunny day than on a gloomy, sunless day. Some people living in areas which do not get many sunny days in the winter develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Studies have indicated that working the grave yard shift is detrimental to your health. We need light to be healthy.

Even though we don't see it, the light around us contains the full spectrum of colors. Each color has its own frequency and vibration. It is thought by some that our tissues and organs need the same energies as light. When disease or injury disturbs the vibration and energy of an organ or area of our body, applying the associated color frequency can restore the body to health.

Color therapy has been around for thousands of years. The ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Chinese studied and used color to treat ailments. Papyrus sheets have been found dating back to 1550 BC which have a list of color "cures." The "," the Chinese book of internal medicine, dating back 2000 years, records color diagnosis.
In 1932, two psychologists from California scientifically showed that, in humans, blue light has a calming effect and red light has a stimulating effect.
In 1933, Dinshah Ghadiali, a scientist from India, published "The Spectro Chrometry Encyclopedia." This book laid the foundation for most modern color therapy.
About the same time in the United States, Dr. Harry Spitler developed a form of color therapy called "Syntonics." Dr. Spitler found that he could generate profound physiological and psychological changes in patients by changing the light which entered their eyes.
Even conventional medical practice uses light to treat certain diseases. Phototherapy is used to direct ultraviolet light to the affected area in the treatment of psoriasis and acne. Blue light is used to treat hyperbiliruminemia, a liver condition in premature babies. Light is used to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD).
The Relationship Between Light and Melatonin

Sleep experts have known about the relationship between melatonin and light exposure for a long time. In fact, both melatonin and light are said to control the synchronization of the biological clock.

It is believed that the color entering the eyes is directed to the hypothalamus gland, from there to the pineal gland and then to the pituitary gland, which regulates and governs hormone production. As the brain processes this information, it is believed that it causes cellular and hormonal changes. The key is that the frequency of the color may be transmitted to the area of the body which recognizes it. The frequency, or vibration, of the color is constant. The vibration can "tune" that area of the body. In other words, that area may now be restored to its proper vibration and be restored to health while the color is being used. If used regularly, the body may learn to function properly on its own, much as it will with physical therapy.

Relaxation Was Observed While Staring at Baker-Miller Pink
In 1978, while studying at City University in Seattle, Washington, Dr. Schauss, along with Dr. John N. Ott, experimented with a certain color of pink, later to be called Baker-Miller. They "observed relaxation of the subjects when they stared at a 18 by 24 inch card-board plate" of this color of pink. They found that no other color consistently resulted in the same relaxation.
Dr. Schauss then did some experiments on himself. He observed that his blood pressure, pulse, and heart rate were unaffected by exposure to this shade of pink. However, "after intentionally increasing cardiovascular activity through a series of intense physical exercises, [he] found that this color had a marked effect on lowering [his] heart rate, pulse and respiration as compared to other colors."

Could Baker-Miller Pink Also Reduce Aggression?
In 1979, Commander Miller and Warden Gene Baker at the U.S. Naval Correctional Center in Seattle painted the walls and ceiling of one admissions cells the color pink that Dr. Schauss would later name after them. After 156 days, they reported to the U.S. Navy's Bureau of Naval Personnel, Law Enforcement and Corrections Division, Washington, D.C. that "Since initiation of this procedure on March 1, 1979, there have been no incidents of erratic or hostile behavior during the initial phase of confinement." By the time the first symptoms of most health care problems appear, that condition has been developing for months, if not years. There is an initial incident that causes normal function to be interrupted. After the loss of normal function, the next step is the tissue change or pathology. Then after enough tissue damage has taken place, symptoms will finally begin to appear. Considering this, it is clear that by the time we feel or know something is wrong the process is already in one of its later stages.

The 40 year old executive who dies of a sudden heart attack may have had no symptoms beforehand, no forewarning that the problem was there until too late. However, he did not just get "sick". There were processes leading up to that fatal moment of symptoms. This is basically true with most other health care problems. When the underlying dysfunction begins, the body tries to compensate. Then the dysfunction changes in nature, and the body again tries to compensate for that change. Each one of these compensations become, in fact, a" layer" of the disease process. Battle after battle, war after war, the two processes rage on: breakdown, degeneration, and death fight against repair, regeneration, and life. Back and forth it goes, until eventually, in the disease process, the degeneration starts to win, and, in time, symptoms inform the person of this fact. Usually the first symptoms are faint and infrequent. Gradually they become more severe and frequent, until the person realizes that something is really wrong. Unfortunately, in our society, the first step then is to try to SUPPRESS these symptoms.
CLICK PIC
Traditional Drug Approach
The American health care system approach is sadly ineffective: most doctors will recommend a drug or medication to help cover up or suppress the symptoms. Aspirin for chronic headaches, coating solutions for chronic indigestion, tranquilizers for chronic anxiety, nervousness, depression, painkillers for chronic pain, and on and on. These approaches simply do not deal with the problem. As we sedate or cover up the symptoms, this allows the disease process time to become more chronic, more imbedded and deep-seated, and more difficult for the body to correct, or repair.
The Layers Accumulate
CLICK PIC
When the patient, finally desperate enough to seek alternative health care options, finds a doctor who is involved in returning the body back to true health, he can find himself in an uphill struggle. By now there is layer upon layer upon layer of the disease process already in place. There will also be toxic remains within the body from the drugs, that will have to be eliminated. Most disease processes change as they progress; as more and more tissues become involved, and then different organs.
CLICK PIC
The natural health care physician now must help the patient work back through each of these levels in an effort to reach true health. The disease process could represent 5-40 years of progression! However, the patient may have only had symptoms for weeks or months. His expectation is to be well in a week or so, unless he is made aware of the true nature of his condition. The healing process can take time, as the body back-tracks through each level of toxicity and dysfunction until it returns itself to 100% normal function.
Vega Testing Evaluation
CLICK PIC
This layer effect is something that becomes very obvious in our offices when we utilize VEGA-TESTING as part of the diagnostic evaluation of a patient. When a patient comes in with a particular symptom which concerns him, we do the initial testing. Certain organs, glands, deficiencies, etc. show up at that time. As we treat these, we may find that the condition will improve, but not completely disappear. Further testing then may reveal other organs or glands that need to be treated; or the same gland may need additional treatment that wasn't evident at the first test.
CLICK PIC
This is because the body can only deal with certain levels at a time. To use an example, if we are dealing with a certain stomach condition, it may actually be a condition that is being affected by the pancreas, the liver, the kidneys, and the colon. The initial diagnostic evaluation may only show a problem with the stomach that is associated with the pancreas. As we treat the pancreas, strengthen its function, and clear that problem, then the liver and colon may show up. They will then need to be supported, and treated. After that the kidney may show up. This is because it reflects the process of how the stomach problem first originated. We will go through a reverse order until we completely clear out all the factors that lead to the particular stomach problem; then the stomach will completely heal at that time. In this process. symptoms may have gotten better at each stage, or there might not have been any symptom relief until we got to the final stage.
"Fix Me Now!"
CLICK PIC
Because of these particular complexities, there may be a time factor involved in the healing process that we as Americans are unprepared for. "Plop plop, Fizz fizz, Oh, what a relief it is!" is the philosophy of quick cure that is very popular with our "instant" world. We want what we want and we want it NOW! If you want quick relief at any cost, then you will not have a healthy body. Our apporach is dedicated to finding the root cause/s of your health problem and to work with the body until we return each organ, gland, and system of the body back to normal. And, understand, that can take time.
DETOX SYMPTOMS
CLICK PIC
It is also possible that, as we remove one layer after another, certain negative symptoms can show up. This can be common in natural health care, and has several different names: retracing, de-toxins, healing crisis. It is basically a detoxifying process that the body has to go through in order to get well. That is why we will often recommend different types of cleansing diets to help the body quickly flush out these stored toxins so that it can get on with the process of healing, and so that the process can be undergone with the least amount of discomfort possible.

If you have been asked to read this brochure by Dr. Keefe, it is probably because you find yourself presently in this process. Your body is attempting to return itself back to normal as fast as it can, but it may not he doing that as quickly as you would like it to. We ask that you have patience with the process, for your body's sake. We ask that you continue to follow the recommendations you have been given in order to help you get well. Be sure to communicate any questions about your particular symptoms to Dr. Keefe. We are partners in "peeling the onion" one layer at a time, attempting to get to the core. That is the goal of good health. We all have a potential of a level of good health if we are willing to work the process until we get to the desired destination. Good health may be just around the corner - you may be closer than you think you are.

If you need help, we can employ auriculo-therapy which is a physical therapy modality used in addictive disease. This therapy consists of specific micro-electrical currents which are directed to isolated points on the ear which triggers the release of pituitary hormones (endorphins) which is thought to alter simulative physiological brain pathways.
Effects of auricular therapy on drug addictions
It has been found that by stimulating these acupuncture points in the ear, you could enhance what is known as an "award cascade" effect from the limbic system. This re-balances an addict's chemistry. It can change the addiction from an overwhelming compulsion to a manageable situation which the patient can then eliminate. Certainly, many drug addicts would give anything to rid themselves of their habits - but that over-whelming compulsion to use the drug is more than they can overcome. Thus, this help is a wonderful asset to the addict on a physiological level.
It is through this mechanism that a person is able to break the addictive habits of smoking, alcohol, drugs, etc.

Weight Loss

Weight loss can be frustrating experience. Counting calories, weighing and measuring your foods, and dealing with the Appetite Demon. Many people give up and try to find the easy way out.
CLICK PIC
Unfortunately, when it comes to our bodies and health, there is no easy way out. I know that there appears to be an easy way out sometimes. Any gimmick that you try with your body, in time, will backfire. Many people, when it comes to weight loss, have relied on drugs to suppress their appetite and speed up their metabolism. And now, we find in recent news reports that these individuals have caused irreparable damage to their bodies, and several have lost their lives. There is a principle that is eternal. You can't cheat natural law, with weight loss or any other health issue. Do it correctly or you will suffer some negative consequences.
CLICK PIC
At Keefe Clinic, we approach weight loss with a wholistic viewpoint. We look at diet, metabolism, chemical imbalances, exercise and methods to enhance function. Your body has a drive to seek its natural healthy weight. If you are overweight something is resisting this drive.
CLICK PIC
Your diet could be wrong even though you're eating good foods. There are four classic metabolic types each requiring different diet and exercise regime. Learning your metabolic type could be one of the keys you have missed in maintaining a proper weight.
CLICK PIC
Your metabolism could be off because of thyroid problems, a congested liver, endocrine problems, blood sugar problem, and problems with serotonin levels and other neurotransmitter imbalances. If you have one or more of these conditions then they need to be dealt with in order for your body to reach and maintain a normal weight. I hope you can see just taking a drug or trying some other wonder pill is not going to give you any type of results that will last for long. And studies have shown most people who began some quick weight loss have gained not only their weight back but usually more within the year.

We have entered the era of chronic disease. From herpes to AIDS, heart disease to cancer, more and more conditions are appearing that we have no wonder drugs to cure. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is another. Although labeled incurable by the medical profession, who are seeking for some wonder drug, this disease is being helped through Chiropractic. It is important to note that most of the new health problems of today are immune system-related.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: Chiropractic is the #1 effective way to rebuild a weakened immune system.

CASE HISTORY: Debby S.
In July of 1985, I was diagnosed as having Chronic Mononucleosis. I was sent home with directions of bed rest, and really thought nothing serious of it. Weeks passed and I was still very ill. I had to quit my job. Months passed, and I was still very ill. I was getting worse, not better.
CLICK PIC
Medical expenses started piling up in the desperate search to find "my cure," "my health again," that which had been taken for granted for so many years. I was sent from one doctor to the next until I landed in the hands of an infectious disease specialist only to have him again do more poking and prodding.
CLICK PIC
In the end, I was sent home with a pamphlet entitled, "Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - How to Live with Your Disease". All I could see before my eves was a picture painted with illness. . I drove home with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome branded in my mind, soul, and body.

CFS is an illness that is not totally understood. Its cause is unknown and it consists of many different symptoms ranging from severe and debilitating fatigue. muscular aches and pains, neurological problems, flu-like symptoms to a host of different other problems. I found nothing to stop the horrible sickness. Nothing could be done to control the waxing and waning of the illness. The months passed into years.
CLICK PIC
I truly began to believe I would have to learn to live with this illness, until I was led to Dr. John Keefe and his practice. After a few weeks of working with Dr. Keefe. I began to start picking up. The sick, flu-like feelings started to subside. Little by little, my energy started coming back. I stopped "living my illness" for the first time in along time. I knew I was pulling out of it!

is a neurological condition, which affects the nervous system. Epilepsy is also known as a seizure "sudden, excessive discharge of nervous-system electrical activity that usually causes a change in behavior". It is usually diagnosed after a person has had at least two seizures that were not caused by some known medical condition like alcohol withdrawal or extremely low blood sugar.
The seizures in epilepsy disorder characterized by transient but recurrent disturbances of brain function that may or may not be associated with impairment or loss of consciousness and abnormal movements or behavior. It may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but most of the time the cause is unknown. The word "epilepsy" does not indicate anything about the cause of the person's seizures, what type they are, or how severe they are.
If I have one seizure, does that mean I will get epilepsy?
About half of the people who have one seizure without a clear cause will have another one, usually within 6 months. You are twice as likely to have another seizure if you have a known brain injury or other type of brain abnormality. If you do have two seizures, there's about an 80% chance that you'll have more.
If your first seizure occurred at the time of an injury or infection in the brain, you are more likely to develop epilepsy than if you had not had a seizure in that situation.

EEG are also likely if your doctor finds abnormalities on a neurological examination; a set of tests of the functioning of your nervous system that is performed in the doctor's office.
Seizures have a beginning, middle, and end. When an individual is aware of the beginning, it may be thought of as a warning or aura. A warning before a seizure; a simple partial seizure occuring within seconds before a complex partial or secondarily generalized tonic-clonic seizure, or it may occur alone; also a warning before a migraine headache. On the other hand, an individual may not be aware of the beginning and therefore have no warning.
Sometimes, the warning or aura is not followed by any other symptoms. It may be considered a simple partial seizure Simple partial seizure that involves only part of the brain and does not impair consciousness.
The middle of the seizure may take several different forms. For people who have warnings, the aura may simply continue or it may turn into a complex partial seizure. An epileptic seizure that involves only part of the brain and impairs consciousness; often preceded by a simple partial seizure (aura, or warning).or a convulsion. An older term for a tonic-clonic seizure. For those who do not have a warning, the seizure may continue as a complex partial seizure or it may evolve into a convulsion.
The end to a seizure represents a transition from the seizure back to the individual normal state. This period is referred to as the “post-ictal period (an ictus is a seizure) and signifies the recovery period for the brain. It may last from seconds to minutes to hours, depending on several factors including which part(s) of the brain were affected by the seizure and whether the individual was on anti-seizure medication. If a person has a complex partial seizure or a convulsion, their level of awareness gradually improves during the postictal period, much like a person waking up from anesthesia after an operation.
When are people most likely to get epilepsy?
New cases of epilepsy are most common among children, especially during the first year of life. The rate of new cases gradually declines until about age 10, and then becomes stable. After age 55 or 60, the rate starts to increase, as people develop strokes, brain tumors, or Alzheimer's disease. (All of these disorders can cause epilepsy.)
Natural Healthcare Offers Hope For Epilepsy
Over the past 30 years I have seen several patients with seizure disorders and the good news is most of them respond to treatment. The response can be anywhere from substantially less seizures to a complete resolution. One common factor that we will see are changes within the skull and upper neck. This can cause irritation on the central nervous system and, in susceptible individuals, produce seizures. Chiropractic physicians are the only ones trained in the detection and correction of vertebral subluxations.
Because of our unique training in these structural, neurological dysfunctions most other physicians will miss this potential cause of epilepsy.
There are also biochemical components to epilepsy that include toxicity, allergies and specific nutritional deficiencies essential for normal brain function. Again these areas are ones that only doctors in natural healthcare specialize in.
Because these two important areas are overlooked by most physician types most patients with epilepsy are sentenced to years of taking harmful, suppressive drugs that don't cure the problem. These drugs can affect a person's personality, energy level and quality of life.
It's important to note that not all patients can be helped through natural healthcare. But that's true with any other type of health care that you might try.
"First Of All Do No Harm"
Unlike drug therapy which kills over 2000 people a week in the United States, based on CDC statistics, natural healthcare is the safest of all forms of health care. The worst most patients notice under natural healthcare is they don't respond. The good news is natural healthcare has well over 80% success rate with most health problems. I don't mean successfully suppressing the symptoms. I mean resolving the underlying chemical, biological, structural issues that cause the condition and thus the symptoms disappear.

Osteoarthritis is rarely appreciated as one of the greatest problems affecting man. This form of arthritis is so universal that it is often regarded as a normal part of aging. Osteoarthritis is usually progressive and often de-forming and disabling. The prevalence in the U.S. for all aged 25-74 is 32.5 percent for the hands (42.4 million persons), 22.2 percent for the feet (29 million), 3.8 percent for the knees (5 million) and 1.3 percent for the hips (men only, 765,000).
CLICK PIC
There are many names for Osteoarthritis. The name most used is degenerated joint disease (D.J.D). The classification of Osteoarthritis as a disease has even been questioned by some authorities, who prefer to redefine it as "a mechanism of repair of dense tissue". Osteoarthritis means inflammation of a bony joint, the term is usually applied to the process involved in D.J.D even though it is understood as a noninflammatory process that primarily involves breakdown of joint cartilage. This extremely common arthritis can even cause severe pain and disability, leading to loss of work and independents in the aged population.
CLICK PIC
More than 50 different terms have been applied to osteoarthritis. The most common terms including osteoarthritis, degenerative arthritis, degenerated arthrosis and degenerative joint disease (D.J.D). The difference between the terms arthrosis and arthritis has come from the fact that the disease process is not always inflammatory. For this reason, D.J.D has gained the most universal acceptance in the literature.
CLICK PIC
Articular cartilage provides the joint with a self lubricating surface and works well under normal joint loading conditions. However, cartilage has a limited capacity for repair and re-generation, so damage to cartilage disrupts the normal function of this tissue, thus interfering with a normal lubricating process within the joint. Insufficient lubrication may be a primary factor in the cause of osteoarthritis. The tissues of the synovial joint are inherently susceptible to the development of osteoarthritis if range of motion or the amount of stress on the articular cartilage is excessive. Joints are threatened during normal day-to-day activities, and much of the joint protection is from the dynamic system of coordinated muscle activity. O'Connor et al. defines a protective muscular reflex as a somatic muscular activity that prevents injury to a normal joint, or further damage to the injured joint, by preventing the joint from exceeding its normal range of motion.

NSAIDs In The Treatment Of Arthritis And Side Effects
NSAIDs are broad class of prescription and over-the-counter drugs, including aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, Voltaren and other similar drugs. NSAIDs continue to be the mainstay of drug therapy for patients with osteoarthritis. Unfortunately, these drugs are over prescribed, readily available and not used judiciously. These drugs are not without side effects; the American College of Rheumatology guidelines suggest that patients receiving long-term NSAID therapy obtained a blood count, urinalysis and chemistry panel every three months. Monitoring cannot wait until the side effects of NSAIDs cause symptoms. Renal failure does not produce symptoms until it becomes severe.
CLICK PIC
NSAIDs are the most prescribed drug in the U.S.. Even though this class of drug is widely used and perceived safe, there are serious risks of complications. Among these are gastrointestinal ulcers and hemorrhages that can lead to perforation and death. More than one percent of the population uses these drugs on a daily basis. Adverse effects from these medications as a group, are reported to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) more frequently than any other medication class. In a study of economic effects of gastric ulcers in NSAID users, the per patient cost of hospitalization was $3,450; those in need of hospitalization and surgery cost of 15,700. The incidents in severity of acute mucosal injury are does depend but virtually 100% of subjects developed lesions after a single 650-1300 mg dose of aspirin. NSAID- associated GI problems were estimated to cause 32,000 hospitalizations and 3200 deaths per year in the U.S.. There is little evidence to suggest that NSAIDs have any advantage over sample analgesic's and sample analgesic's are also unsatisfactory. In a study of patience with chronic knee pain and osteoarthritis, treatment with either an anti-inflammatory, and analgesic dose of ibuprofen and/or acetaminophen showed no evidence of superiority of either the anti-inflammatory dose or the lower dose of ibuprofen compared to acetaminophen.
CLICK PIC
Rapid deterioration of joints from long-term NSAID treatment has been called analgesic arthropathy and is thought to be caused by loss of protective pain sensation, but it seems more likely that it is a direct effect of the drug on cartilage. In addition, oral administration of aspirin markedly accelerates development of osteoarthritis in C57 black mice, a strain genetically predisposed to the disease. If along with the external evidence that NSAIDs interfere with metabolism of articular cartilage and a repair of bone, clinical experience has shown use of these drugs cause acetabular bone destruction, joint disease and avascular necrosis of the hip. Even though NSAID induced arthritis has been a well-known since the 1960s, in a recent survey, 94 percent of primary care physicians indicated they would prescribed NSAIDs as an initial treatment for elderly patients with uncomplicated hip osteoarthritis.

- Joint health depends on the following factors:
- Proper nutrition
- Movement
- Balance
CLICK PIC
Chiropractic adjustments are well-known for establishing proper joint balance and function. By improving the alignment of the body each joint is allowed to move in a more natural and balanced manner. Also chiropractic adjustments are beneficial in establishing normal range of motion and normal muscle reflex function as well as release of beta-endorphins (a natural pain killer).
CLICK PIC
Exercise is the next most important factor when it comes to joint health. Research study after research study has shown the beneficial effects in preventing or reversing arthritis with regular exercise. Diet: a number of studies have shown a large number of patients with osteoarthritis are ingesting less than the U.S. recommended daily allowance of vitamin A, C., D., E. ., B6, folic acid, pantothenic acid in the minerals zinc, magnesium, iron and calcium.
CLICK PIC
Most of these vitamins are associated with the chronic degenerated disease rampant in our society. Glucosamine sulfate, chondroitin sulfate, fish oils, magnesium, B-3, collagen, curcumin and other specialty nutrients have shown great promise in the controlled and even reversal of this disease. Through proper evaluation Dr. Keefe can establish a treatment program to help you regain your health.
