IN THE NEWS: A NEW STUDY IN THE JOURNAL PEDIATRICS   SUGGESTS that hand washing of dishes may be healthier than using an automatic dishwasher. The study, which looked at 1029 families with children ages 7-8 years finds that some allergy related disorders are less common in families who primarily hand wash their dinner and cookware as opposed to using a dishwasher. The authors theorize that perhaps, since hand washing would appear to be a less thorough method of cleansing, residual bacteria left on dinnerware might help subjects to develop a more natural tolerance to various allergens. Some findings include the following. Eczema was seen in 38% of children from "dishwasher" families as opposed to only23% in families who typically hand wash. Asthma was more than four times as common (7.3%) in machine washed families compared to hand washed households (1.7%). Nasal allergies didn't appear to be as much increased, but were still increased at 12.9% vs. 10.3%. Additionally, the study showed that families who eat fermented foods and farm-fresh produce are less likely to exhibit allergies.

WELLNESS: FOODS THAT TRIGGER HEADACHES most headaches are caused by subluxations or misalignments in the neck but for some headache and migraine sufferers, certain foods can act as triggers. Grapes are low in calories and rich in vitamin C and fiber, so they are a nutritional snack. But they also contain a substance called tyramine, a naturally occurring amino acid that forms from the breakdown of protein in food as it ages. Tyramine can cause your blood pressure to rise, which can trigger headaches in some people. If you experience this reaction, you may want to avoid other trigger foods, such as:• Smoked or cured meats• Aged cheeses• Citrus fruits• Sauerkraut • Soy sauce• Red wine• And certain beers Research shows that tyramine in grapes can have a negative effect on certain antidepressants called MAOIs.  Patients taking these medications should talk to their doctor about their diet.  IN THE NEWS: CHILDREN THAT DRINK RAW MILK HAVE 41% LESS ASTHMA the JOURNAL OF ALLERGY AND CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY reported on August 29, 2011 that children who drank raw milk had a 41% reduced chance of developing asthma. The same children had a nearly 50% reduction in hayfever as well even when other relevant factors were considered. The large European study reported by REUTERS HEALTH earlier this month included survey results were parents answered detailed questions about their children’s milk consumption. 800 milk samples were collected from the households of those participating in the study. Researchers linked the protective effect of raw milk to the fragile whey protein BSA and alpha-lacto albumin which are destroyed by pasteurization.

IN THE NEWS: Virtual reality affects brain's 'GPS cells' Researchers recorded rats' brain activity while the rodents ran on tiny treadmills in a virtual reality setup. In the virtual world, the animals' brains did not form a mental map of their surroundings like the ones they form in real-life settings, the study showed. Scientists have found that brain cells act as a positioning system, by creating a mental map of an environment from visual input as well as sounds, smells and other information. The discovery of these "GPS cells" was awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

IN THE NEWS:Poor sleep tied to inflammation in teens Teens who don’t get enough sleep may be at risk for chronic problems later in life from increased inflammation throughout the body, according to a new study. Those who didn’t get enough sleep during the week and especially those who slept longer on weekends had higher inflammation levels tied to heart disease and diabetes, researchers report in Sleep Medicine. Investigators used blood tests to measure kids’ C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. High levels indicate that the body is in “inflammation mode,” said lead author Martica Hall of the psychiatry department at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. “Frankly, high CRP over a long period of time is bad for everything,” Hall said. “We say it increases the risk of ‘all things bad.’”

Many Americans, at different seasons of the year, are plagued by symptoms of runny noses, watery eyes, congested glands, persistent coughs, and recurring upper respiratory infections, all due to allergic reactions.   Allergies can be simply defined as the body’s inappropriate response to certain substances, usually proteins (antigens).  These proteins can be ragweed, grass pollens, any plant substance found in the air, a particular food or a chemical that is ingested or inhaled.  These antigens can cause immune system responses, classically the congested, runny noses, watery eyes, congested sinuses and lungs; but allergic responses can also include depression, asthma, joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, and many other symptoms.

We call these responses inappropriate because everyone will breathe in the ragweed or grass pollen, or eat certain foods, but only a certain percentage of the population will have reactions to these as antigens.  These reactions thus represent an inappropriate response to common substances.  In other words, the body interprets these common substances as invading organisms, and the immune system mounts a response as if it was being attacked.  However, the particular antigens usually do not cause any tissue damage under normal circumstances.  In fact, the damages (or symptoms that are produced within the body) are usually due to the body’s inappropriate immune system response to the substance.

It is this inappropriate response that needs to be treated - and not just the symptoms of the allergies.  The standard medical approach to allergies is to suppress the symptoms with dangerous antihistamines, cortisone preparations, and other medications that are designed only to repress the body’s responses.  This method is one that I term a “COVER-UP” method.  It does not help a patient with his or her allergies; it only artificially  covers up the symptoms of these allergies.  The question that needs to be asked is, “Why do these people have inappropriate allergy responses?"

The answer to this is:  the nervous system has an imbalance in the way it responds to certain proteins or other substances, and it is that response that must be corrected, not suppressed.
Below listed is the protocol which we have developed through trial and error over the years and with which we are currently  enjoying great success  at Keefe Clinic.

First of all, we understand that it is not the ragweed or any other antigen that is the problem, but it is the body’s response to it that is the problem.  Therefore, we look to the nervous system as the root cause, because the imbalance is within the nervous system, which then causes the abnormal reaction.

1) The first area of treatment is that of homeopathy.  Homeopathy is a system based on the principle of “like cures like”.  In the case of the allergies, the substance that would be used would be the antigen (the pollen, ragweed, food, etc) that produces the improper symptoms.  This antigen is diluted several times to form a product that will help the body adjust its inappropriate reaction to become an appropriate reaction.  By giving this antigen in a diluted fashion, and by diluting it enough that it will not produce an allergy reaction by itself, a slight response is produced that will gradually desensitize the body to the offending substance.

For instance, if you have an allergy to ragweed pollen, when you breathe it in, your immune system begins to fight the ragweed as if it was an invading bacteria or virus.  Thus, we would take ragweed pollen and dilute it down to a level where it will not cause that same immune response - indeed, at this level, it has been found that it will produce an opposite response.  In other words, it will re-calibrate the body in such a way that it will not react to this pollen as a foreign invader.  Over a period of time, by ingesting diluted antigens, the body will build up a resistance to this inappropriate response (allergic reaction). This strengthening of the body can lead to a permanent cure for this allergy.  The homeopathic treatment program is similar to the allergy injection program practiced in the United States.

In fact, when an allergist gives an injection of diluted pollens, he is practicing a crude form of homeopathy.  We say "crude" because the homeopathic physicians developed this technique in Europe over a hundred years ago, and they used very precise dilutions.  We are very happy to be able to offer homeopathic Allergy Mixes in our office which can be customized to your particular allergies- especially because we feel this is quite superior to the often painful injection process used by medical allergists.

Allergy mixes are liquids given by mouth in small doses on a regular basis - easily administered even to very small children.  These custom-made mixes represent the antigens (environmental, in foods, and chemicals) to which you might be sensitive.  These particular products sometimes require changing in potency in order to effect a permanent cure.  Most people start out using a 6x potency, and most will develop a permanent cure with that potency alone.  But some patients require the changing of potencies as they progress through the treatment program.  The potency can go from a 6x dilution all the way up to a 500x dilution, or higher,  before some are desensitized totally to a particular antigen.  Thus it is essential that a patient keep us informed on how he or she is responding to the treatment program in order for the allergy mix to be adjusted as needed.

2) The next approach in allergy work that we use is re-establishing a normal function of the nervous system in regard to these antigens.  For this we utilize Chiropractic care.  Chiropractic, of course, helps relieve nerve pressure and establishes normal nerve functioning within the body. Vertebra can lose their normal position and crowd the nerve root causing disruption of the normal control over the body.  Many disease processes have their start from subluxation complexes that were neglected because there was no pain and the person did not have his or her spine checked for problems.  Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective for many of the most common health problems that we suffer.

3) It has also been found that particular antigens will disrupt certain electrical-type circuits within the body. In acupuncture, these circuits are called meridians.  Several points which show less resistance to electrical current are found along the meridians, and these points can be mapped out by use of electronic machines that register skin resistance in the body.  It has been found that there are twelve meridians that are found on both sides of the body, as well as two meridians that are found along the center of the body, both in the front and in the back.  These meridians are associated with certain functions, organs, muscles and parts of the body.  Each meridian has a particular name, e.g., the kidney meridian (associated with certain parts of the body, including the kidneys).  There is a liver meridian, a heart meridian, etc.  These meridians are electrical circuits that tend to be associated with these key organs and muscles.  It is found that certain antigens will disrupt these electrical circuits in the body and produce the allergy response.  Through the acupuncture-allergy technique, we determine which circuits are disrupted by a particular antigen, and then by a proper stimulation of the key points within the meridian, as a particular antigen is being held or placed on the body, we cause the nervous system to re-adjust how it responds to that antigen.  In a few cases, this can produce almost instantaneous reversal of the allergy response in the body.

This is a new technique, and promises to be a very effective way of re-programming the nervous system in its inappropriate response to antigens.  This treatment program can vary as to number of treatments required to produce a permanent cure, but a number of patients will respond within 1-6 treatments when we are dealing with a particular antigen.  Depending on the number of antigens with which we have to deal, we can schedule allergy acupuncture treatment sessions for each substance, as we determine the number of sessions we will have to do to develop a long-term cure for your allergies.

4) Nutritional therapy is another important part of an over-all program. Weak organs are involved in allowing the body to have an allergic reaction.  Giving nutritional support to these weak organs will help a patient recover his health, and allow him to end the cycle of the chronic allergy sufferer who normally has episode after episode of allergy symptoms.  Through the use of properly selected products, the allergic system can be returned to normal function.  Remember:   allergies do not represent a normally functioning body.  Proper nutrition can be an effective tool in returning the body back to health in most health care problems.

IN THE NEWS: STUDY AFTER STUDY SHOWS THE FLU SHOT IS A SCAM A study published in the October 2008 issue of the Archives of Pediatric; Adolescent Medicine found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no impact on flu-related hospitalizations or doctor visits during two recent flu seasons. The researchers concluded that “significant influenza vaccine effectiveness could not be demonstrated for any season, age, or setting” examined. A 2008 study published in the Lancet found that influenza vaccination was NOT associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia in older people. This also supports an earlier study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Research published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine also confirms that there has been no decrease in deaths from influenza and pneumonia in the elderly, despite the fact that vaccination coverage among the elderly has increased from 15 percent in 1980 to 65 percent now. In 2007, researchers with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institutes of Health published this conclusion in the Lancet Infectious Diseases: A large-scale, systematic review of 51 studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2006, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in children under 2. The studies involved 260,000 children, age 6 to 23 months.

IN THE NEWS: Zohydro: Why this new painkiller could spark another addiction epidemic The controversial drug is Zohydro, an extended-release painkiller containing the already widely used opioid, hydrocodone.  The company claims that acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States, and 63 percent of these cases are caused by hydrocodone-acetaminophen combination drugs.  Zohydro is meant to provide pain relief without this threat of liver toxicity. But addiction experts claim this argument isn’t enough to outweigh the potential dangers posed by the painkiller.  Because of its extremely high dosage and lack of abuse deterrents, many believe Zohydro could easily ignite another addiction epidemic – as well as a new wave of overdose deaths. “I treat addiction, and see countless young people come in – a lot of guys in their late 20s, early 30s – who had a sports injury and were given an opiate.  I’m seeing them years later, and it’s devastated their lives,” Dr. Dana Jane Saltzman, a licensed acupuncturist and addiction specialist in New York City, told FoxNews.com. “...It’s really a lifelong struggle, and a lot of these kids wouldn’t be addicted if [opioids] weren’t so readily available.”

Casual marijuana use linked with brain abnormalities, study finds

Casual marijuana use may come with some not-so-casual side effects.

For the first time, researchers at Northwestern University have analyzed the relationship between casual use of marijuana and brain changes – and found that young adults who used cannabis just once or twice a week showed significant abnormalities in two important brain structures.

The study’s findings, to be published Wednesday in the Journal of Neuroscience, are similar to those of past research linking chronic, long-term marijuana use with mental illness and changes in brain development.

Dr. Hans Breiter, co-senior study author, said he was inspired to look at the effects of casual marijuana use after previous work in his lab found that heavy cannabis use caused similar brain abnormalities to those seen in patients with schizophrenia.

“There were abnormalities in their working memory, which is fundamental to everything you do,” Breiter, a professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told FoxNews.com.  “When you make judgments or decisions, plan things, do mathematics – anything you do always involves working memory.  It’s one of the core fundamental aspects of our brains that we use every day.  So given those findings, we decided we need to look at casual, recreational use.”

For their most recent study, Breiter and his team analyzed a very small sample of patients between the ages of 18 and 25: 20 marijuana users and 20 well-matched control subjects.  The marijuana users had a wide range of usage routines, with some using the drug just once or twice a week and others using it every single day.

Utilizing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), the researchers analyzed the participants’ brains, focusing on the nucleus accumbens (NAC) and the amygdala – two key brain regions responsible for processing emotions, making decisions and motivation.  They looked at these brain structures in three different ways, measuring their density, volume and shape.

According to Breiter, all three were abnormal in the casual marijuana users.

“For the NAC, all three measures were abnormal, and they were abnormal in a dose-dependent way, meaning the changes were greater with the amount of marijuana used,” Breiter said.  “The amygdala had abnormalities for shape and density, and only volume correlated with use.  But if you looked at all three types of measures, it showed the relationships between them were quite abnormal in the marijuana users, compared to the normal controls.”

Because these brain regions are central for motivation, the findings from Northwestern help support the well-known theory that marijuana use leads to a condition called amotivation. Also called amotivational syndrome, this psychological condition causes people to become less oriented towards their goals and purposes in life, as well as seem less focused in general.

Given these eye-opening results,  Breiter said that more research is needed to look into marijuana’s effects on the brain – even in those who use the drug only once or twice a month.

“We need to see what happens longitudinally,” Breiter said. “What happens as you follow people over time?  What happens if they stop using – do these bad effects continue? What happens if you can intervene early?...My worry is we haven’t studied this compound and here we are looking to change legislation on it.”

Although Breiter’s team members did not examine the patients’ cognitive symptoms, they do believe that the brain abnormalities seen in their study could lead to substantial effects on brain development and behavior, especially given the young ages of the participants.  Breiter also acknowledged the problems of analyzing a very small study sample – but said that their findings should still serve as a wake-up call to others.

“This study is just a beginning pilot study, but at the same time, the results that came out are the same as a canary in a coal mine,” Breiter said.  “...The interaction of marijuana with brain development could be a significant problem.”

IN THE NEWS: LACK OF SLEEP TIED TO MORE HEALTH RISKS FOR OBESE ADOLESCENTS For overweight and obese adolescents, a lack of sleep may be linked to a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke, Counsel and Heal reported. In a new study published in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers found that only one-third of participants were physically active for at least one hour a day. Furthermore, most teens only slept for approximately seven hours each night. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children between ages 10 to 17 should sleep for a totally of 8.5 to 9.5 hours per night.  While obese or overweight teens already had a high risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases, researchers found that a lack of sleep elevated this risk even further.

As we discuss inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods we must understand the difference in body types. There were four body types that require slightly different blends of carbohydrates fat, and proteins. These can be divided into two basic groups one the high complex carbohydrate low-fat and the other being high-protein low carbohydrate. If you’re in a high complex carbohydrate low-fat group then foods like eggs, butter, salt, redmeat and some spices could be a problem. If you’re in the high protein low carb group than refined carbohydrates sugars grains could be a problem. So it’s important to know what body type you have as you review the following list of anti-inflammatory foods. Also any food that you’re allergic to can be pro-inflammatory even on the list of anti-inflammatory foods. For instance the nightshade family can be pro-inflammatory if you’re allergic to them. They include: potatoes (Solanum tuberosum), tomatoes (Lycopersicon esculentum), many species of sweet and hot peppers (all species of Capsicum, including Capsicum annum), and eggplant (Solanum melongena). Less well know, but equally genuine nightshade foods include ground cherries (all species of Physalis), tomatillos (Physallis ixocapra), garden huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum), tamarillos (Cyphomandra betacea), pepinos (Solanum muricatum), and naranjillas (Solanum quitoense). Pimentos (also called pimientos) belong to the nightshade family, and usually come from the pepper plant Capsicum annum. Pimento cheese and pimento-stuffed olives are therefore examples of foods that should be classified as containing nightshade components. Although the sweet potato, whose scientific name is Ipomoea batatas, belongs to the same plant order as the nightshades (Polemoniales), it does not belong to the Solanaceae family found in this order, but to a different plant family called Convolvulaceae.

If I ask most people on the street what was the main contributor to heart disease then cholesterol would be the first thing out of most people's mouth. If I ask you the number one way of maintaining healthy bones most people would say consuming more calcium. My question to you is: did you arrive at these conclusions by your own in-depth study of the research and science or have you opened up a medical textbook to determine how these conditions develop and exactly what these conditions are?  Let me give you some facts: one of the largest studies, I'm talking real-life studies not theoretical studies, was a Harvard study of 78,000 nurses. The facts are the nurses that consume the most calcium had the most bone fractures. Asian women living in their own culture eating their own cultural diet get one third the calcium that American women get and osteoporosis is extremely rare in their society. When they move to the US and incorporate the US diet they become the top risk group for osteoporosis.

The next fact is the cholesterol theory of heart disease first gained its acceptance in the 1950s. Medical nutritionist Dr. Keyes supposedly correlated the level of fat intake with heart disease in six countries and even though his theory was rejected at the time he used political maneuvering by becoming part of the Heart Association and finally got his theory accepted. When you look at his original research you will  see a study of 23 countries trying to make this correlation and he had to eliminate 16 of these countries in order to make his theory look correct statistically. When you add back the 16 countries he conveniently eliminated the correlation just doesn't stand up. And between the 1950s and about 1976 there are six different major studies trying to correlate fat in the diet with heart disease and they have all failed. In fact every major study from 1969 through the present has failed to support the cholesterol theory.

One of the longest continual studies is ongoing today started in 1948 in Framingham Massachusetts. This study involves 5000 residents and has shown some amazing contradictions to the cholesterol theory of heart disease. In fact this study has shown after the age 47 the patients with the highest cholesterol outlive the patients with lower cholesterol levels. This study also shows those who ate more saturated fat weighed less and had more energy than those on the low-fat diet.

In April 1996 the second International symposium on dietary fats and oils consumption in health and disease was hosted by the Southwest University medical school in Dallas Texas. Researchers from around the world presented their findings on the effects of fat in the human diet. After the presentations showing the subjects following the low-fat diet hadn't got rid of their obesity, and not lowered their cholesterol levels, had lowered their HDL levels (the good cholesterol), and had increase their blood levels of triglycerides (a major risk factor for heart disease), the moderators of the symposium pronounce the low-fat diet a failure.

The body typing system that I use consists of four different body types: thyroid, gonadal, adrenal and pituitary. These four types tend to correspond the four personality types: Sanguine (This type is characterized by spontaneity, optimism, enthusiasm, high energy, mental flexibility, novelty seeking, impulsiveness and curiosity)., Phlegmatic (These people are mainly defined by their social skills, such as their ability to express themselves and read other people face expressions and body language. These four body types can be divided into two groups. We can call one group the protein group (about 70% of US) and the other the complex carbohydrate group (30%) the protein group tends to be sensitive to carbohydrates particularly refined sugars and grains. The carbohydrate group tends to be sensitive to fats (eggs, butter and red meat), salt and spices.  So a diet too high in sugars and grain can lead to inflammation in the protein type. A diet high in fats and oils can lead to inflammation in the carbohydrate type.

In the area diet this includes eating your body type diet but also consuming enough water for your body weight. In order to determine how much water you need to drink you divide your weight in half and consider that answer in ounces. For instance a hundred pound person their cleansing dose of fluids would be 50 ounces 80% of that would give you the minimum fluids they should drink which is 40 ounces. Dehydration can cause a whole host of conditions and cause any condition your suffering with to be a little worse. Since the EPA recommends boiling city water before drinking we encourage our patients to drink filtered water. Also when it comes to water you can get water in different pH ranges. If you're dealing with an inflammatory chemistry your body is going to be acidic. And so alkaline water can be very effective in the overall management of your body chemistry.

As we consider water we also consider detoxification because we live in a toxic environment. And so most patients need to undergo some level of detoxification in order to remove important stressors in their ability to maintain normal function and better health. DIET: VITAMIN E MAY OFFER BENEFITS FOR PATIENTS WITH ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE   The study compared the effects of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) and the Alzheimer's drug memantine, to assess which one might be more effective for slowing progression of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease in patients taking an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor.  Follow up was just over two years. Results showed that clinical progression of Alzheimer's slowed by 19 percent per year in the group receiving vitamin E, compared with placebo. (This delay translated into just over six months of delayed progression over the two-year follow-up period.) It's worth noting that this isn't the first time memantine, sold under the brand name Namenda, has been found to be more or less useless for mild to moderate Alzheimer's. The drug is approved for moderate to severe cases, but doctors often prescribe it off-label for mild Alzheimer's cases. It's even prescribed off-label for mild cognitive impairment (MCI), which is frequently the prelude to Alzheimer's.

IN THE NEWS: POOR SLEEP LINKED TO TEEN MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS Getting too little sleep might be a sign of - or even a contributor to - emotional problems, anxiety and suicidal thoughts among teens, according to a large study from Europe. Based on data about the sleep habits of nearly 12,000 teens across 11 European countries, researchers found that a student with suicidal thoughts could be predicted to sleep about 36 minutes less each night compared to counterparts with no suicidal thoughts. For teens with severe emotional problems, the amount of sleep lost would be about 30 minutes, on average, each night. Lack of sleep among teens has been linked in other research to many negative health effects, including high blood pressure. And researchers have found that teens are generally going to bed later. Past research has also shown that teens need between eight and a half and nine hours of sleep each night. Teens in the current study averaged about eight hours of sleep.

“Sleep is such a dangerous thing to do, when you’re out in the wild,” Maiken Nedergaard, a Danish biologist who has been leading research into sleep function at the University of Rochester’s medical school, told me. “It has to have a basic evolutional function. Otherwise it would have been eliminated.”

We’ve known for some time that sleep is essential for forming and consolidating memories and that it plays a central role in the formation of new neuronal connections and the pruning of old ones. But that hardly seems enough to risk death-by-leopard-in-the-night. “If sleep was just to remember what you did yesterday, that wouldn’t be important enough,” Dr. Nedergaard explains.

In a series of new studies, published this fall in the journal Science, the Nedergaard lab may at last be shedding light on just what it is that would be important enough. Sleep, it turns out, may play a crucial role in our brain’s physiological maintenance. As your body sleeps, your brain is quite actively playing the part of mental janitor: It’s clearing out all of the junk that has accumulated as a result of your daily thinking.

Recall what happens to your body during exercise. You start off full of energy, but soon enough your breathing turns uneven, your muscles tire, and your stamina runs its course. What’s happening internally is that your body isn’t able to deliver oxygen quickly enough to each muscle that needs it and instead creates needed energy anaerobically. And while that process allows you to keep on going, a side effect is the accumulation of toxic byproducts in your muscle cells. Those byproducts are cleared out by the body’s lymphatic system, allowing you to resume normal function without any permanent damage.

The lymphatic system serves as the body’s custodian: Whenever waste is formed, it sweeps it clean. The brain, however, is outside its reach — despite the fact that your brain uses up about 20 percent of your body’s energy. How, then, does its waste — like beta-amyloid, a protein associated with Alzheimer’s disease — get cleared? What happens to all the wrappers and leftovers that litter the room after any mental workout?

“Think about a fish tank,” says Dr. Nedergaard. “If you have a tank and no filter, the fish will eventually die. So, how do the brain cells get rid of their waste? Where is their filter?”

UNTIL a few years ago, the prevailing model was based on recycling: The brain got rid of its own waste, not only beta-amyloid but other metabolites, by breaking it down and recycling it at an individual cell level. When that process eventually failed, the buildup would result in age-related cognitive decline and diseases like Alzheimer’s. That “didn’t make sense” to Dr. Nedergaard, who says that “the brain is too busy to recycle” all of its energy. Instead, she proposed a brain equivalent of the lymphatic system, a network of channels that cleared out toxins with watery cerebrospinal fluid. She called it the glymphatic system, a nod to its dependence on glial cells (the supportive cells in the brain that work largely to maintain homeostasis and protect neurons) and its function as a sort of parallel lymphatic system.

She was hardly the first to think in those terms. “It had been proposed about one hundred years ago, but they didn’t have the tools to study it properly,” she says. Now, however, with advanced microscopes and dyeing techniques, her team discovered that the brain’s interstitial space — the fluid-filled area between tissue cells that takes up about 20 percent of the brain’s total volume — was mainly dedicated to physically removing the cells’ daily waste.

When members of Dr. Nedergaard’s team injected small fluorescent tracers into the cerebrospinal fluid of anesthetized mice, they found that the tracers quickly entered the brain — and, eventually, exited it — via specific, predictable routes.

The next step was to see how and when, exactly, the glymphatic system did its work. “We thought this cleaning process would require tremendous energy,” Dr. Nedergaard says. “And so we asked, maybe this is something we do when we’re sleeping, when the brain is really not processing information.”

In a series of new studies on mice, her team discovered exactly that: When the mouse brain is sleeping or under anesthesia, it’s busy cleaning out the waste that accumulated while it was awake.

In a mouse brain, the interstitial space takes up less room than it does in ours, approximately 14 percent of the total volume. Dr. Nedergaard found that when the mice slept, it swelled to over 20 percent. As a result, the cerebrospinal fluid could not only flow more freely but it could also reach further into the brain. In an awake brain, it would flow only along the brain’s surface. Indeed, the awake flow was a mere 5 percent of the sleep flow. In a sleeping brain, waste was being cleared two times faster. “We saw almost no inflow of cerebrospinal fluid into the brain when the mice were awake, but then when we anesthetized them, it started flowing. It’s such a big difference I kept being afraid something was wrong,” says Dr. Nedergaard.

Similar work in humans is still in the future. Dr. Nedergaard is currently awaiting board approval to begin the equivalent study in adult brains in collaboration with the anesthesiologist Helene Benveniste at Stony Brook University.

So far the glymphatic system has been identified as the neural housekeeper in baboons, dogs and goats. “If anything,” Dr. Nedergaard says, “it’s more needed in a bigger brain.”

MODERN society is increasingly ill equipped to provide our brains with the requisite cleaning time. The figures are stark. Some 80 percent of working adults suffer to some extent from sleep deprivation. According to the National Sleep Foundation, adults should sleep seven to nine hours. On average, we’re getting one to two hours less sleep a night than we did 50 to 100 years ago and 38 minutes less on weeknights than we did as little as 10 years ago. Between 50 and 70 million people in the United States suffer from some form of chronic sleep disorder. When our sleep is disturbed, whatever the cause, our cleaning system breaks down. At the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Sleep and Circadian Neurobiology, Sigrid Veasey has been focusing on precisely how restless nights disturb the brain’s normal metabolism. What happens to our cognitive function when the trash piles up?

At the extreme end, the result could be the acceleration of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. While we don’t know whether sleep loss causes the disease, or the disease itself leads to sleep loss — what Dr. Veasey calls a “classic chicken-and-egg” problem — we do know that the two are closely connected. Along with the sleep disturbances that characterize neurodegenerative diseases, there is a buildup of the types of proteins that the glymphatic system normally clears out during regular sleep, like beta-amyloids and tau, both associated with Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia.

“To me,” says Dr. Veasey, “that’s the most compelling part of the Nedergaard research. That the clearance for these is dramatically reduced from prolonged wakefulness.” If we don’t sleep well, we may be allowing the very things that cause neural degeneration to pile up unchecked.

Even at the relatively more benign end — the all-nighter or the extra-stressful week when you caught only a few hours a night — sleep deprivation, as everyone who has experienced it knows, impedes our ability to concentrate, to pay attention to our environment and to analyze information creatively. “When we’re sleep-deprived, we can’t integrate or put together facts,” as Dr. Veasey puts it.

But there is a difference between the kind of fleeting sleep loss we sometimes experience and the chronic deprivation that comes from shift work, insomnia and the like. In one set of studies, soon to be published in The Journal of Neuroscience, the Veasey lab found that while our brains can recover quite readily from short-term sleep loss, chronic prolonged wakefulness and sleep disruption stresses the brain’s metabolism. The result is the degeneration of key neurons involved in alertness and proper cortical function and a buildup of proteins associated with aging and neural degeneration.

It’s like the difference between a snowstorm’s disrupting a single day of trash pickup and a prolonged strike. No longer quite as easy to fix, and even when the strike is over, there’s likely to be some stray debris floating around for quite some time yet. “Recovery from sleep loss is slower than we’d thought,” Dr. Veasey notes. “We used to think that after a bit of recovery sleep, you should be fine. But this work shows you’re not.”

If you put her own research together with the findings from the Nedergaard lab, Dr. Veasey says, it “very clearly shows that there’s impaired clearance in the awake brain. We’re really starting to realize that when we skip sleep, we may be doing irreparable damage to the brain, prematurely aging it or setting it up for heightened vulnerability to other insults.”

In a society that is not only chronically sleep-deprived but also rapidly aging, that’s bad news. “It’s unlikely that poor sleep as a child would actually cause Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s,” says Dr. Veasey, “but it’s more likely that you may shift one of those diseases by a decade or so. That has profound health and economic implications.”

It’s a pernicious cycle. We work longer hours, become more stressed, sleep less, impair our brain’s ability to clean up after all that hard work, and become even less able to sleep soundly. And if we reach for a sleeping pill to help us along? While work on the effects of sleeping aids on the glymphatic system remains to be done, the sleep researchers I spoke with agree that there’s no evidence that aided sleep is as effective as natural sleep.

There is, however, reason to hope. If the main function of sleep is to take out our neural trash, that insight could eventually enable a new understanding of both neurodegenerative diseases and regular, age-related cognitive decline. By developing a diagnostic test to measure how well the glymphatic system functions, we could move one step closer to predicting someone’s risk of developing conditions like Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia: The faster the fluids clear the decks, the more effectively the brain’s metabolism is functioning.

“Such a test could also be used in the emergency room after traumatic brain injury,” Dr. Nedergaard says, “to see who is at risk of developing decline in cognitive function.”

We can also focus on developing earlier, more effective interventions to prevent cognitive decline. One approach would be to enable individuals who suffer from sleep loss to sleep more soundly — but how? Dr. Nedergaard’s mice were able to clear their brain’s waste almost as effectively under anesthesia as under normal sleeping conditions. “That’s really fascinating,” says Dr. Veasey. Though current sleeping aids may not quite do the trick, and anesthetics are too dangerous for daily use, the results suggest that there may be better ways of improving sleep pharmacologically.

Now that we have a better understanding of why sleep is so important, a new generation of drug makers can work to create the best possible environment for the trash pickup to occur in the first place — to make certain that our brain’s sleeping metabolism is as efficient as it can possibly be.

A second approach would take the opposite tack, by seeking to mimic the cleanup-promoting actions of sleep in the awake brain, which could make a full night of sound sleep less necessary. To date, the brain’s metabolic process hasn’t been targeted as such by the pharmaceutical industry. There simply wasn’t enough evidence of its importance. In response to the evolving data, however, future drug interventions could focus directly on the glymphatic system, to promote the enhanced cleaning power of the sleeping brain in a brain that is fully awake. One day, scientists might be able to successfully mimic the expansion of the interstitial space that does the mental janitorial work so that we can achieve maximally efficient round-the-clock brain trash pickup.

If that day comes, they would be on their way to discovering that all-time miracle drug: one that, in Dr. Veasey’s joking words, “could mean we never have to sleep at all.”

Drugs might modify symptoms, at a cost, but outside of crisis care their effects are temporary and their side effects can be long-term. In a vast number of cases where antibiotics are prescribed, they are prescribed in violation of all the latest research concerning the appropriate use of antibiotics. Research shows that antibiotics don't work for colds or flu's, most conditions where there's a cough, most bronchitis or runny noses and most ear infections. Probably 70 to 80% of the time when these symptoms are presented the pediatrician or other doctor writes a prescription for antibiotics even though the doctor knows they are inappropriate. Why? When the doctor is interrogated afterwards they usually blame the parent for demanding it. The sad truth is most parents just want the appropriate care and since the medical doctor doesn't have any more training in how to address these issues without drugs (and drugs don't help conditions like these) then they feel impotent if they don't write some kind of prescription. The sad fact is that pharmaceutical companies have taken over the healthcare system and if you're not an informed consumer then you will line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and damage your kid's own health. Disease is not a drug deficiency, diseases is a deficiency within the body. Chiropractic physicians have the training to reestablish the body's own communication systems necessary to keep the system health. Chiropractic physicians have the training in diet, allergies, detox protocols and nutritional therapies to reestablish normal function of the systems of the body including the immune system. Antibiotics weaken the immune system. Even when antibiotics are needed to kill an aggressive bacterial infection their side effects can leave the person's immune system weaker and actually more prone to reoccurring infections. Chiropractic physicians have the training to help reverse the negative effects of antibiotics and to reestablish a stronger immune system.

Unfortunately the food industry is not your friend. Virtually all the foods marketed to kids will wreak havoc with their health. Most of these foods are extremely high in refined carbohydrates which depress your child's immune system and develop the chemistry prone to disease. By simply feeding your kids natural foods: eggs, vegetables, fruits, meat, whole grains in moderation, seeds, nuts and some dairy in moderation you can establish a chemistry of health in your child. Junk food like most cereals, candies, refined grains in most noodles, pizzas, white bread, crackers etc. leads to a chemistry that is prone to disease. The fact that a lot of kids go through periods of time of “apparent health” is a miracle of the creation we call our bodies.

One of the most important things you can do is make sure your kids drink enough clean water and stay away from pops, fruit juices and fake fruit drinks and fructose that come from highly refined corn syrup. Stevia is a great sugar substitute and can be used in a number of things to give it a sweet taste without disrupting your kids’ blood sugar handling system. Marked deviations in normal blood sugar levels will weaken the immune system and affect your kid's moods. A lot of kids suffer from focus issues at school, hyperactivity or moodiness simply because they don't get enough quality proteins to make neurotransmitters, because of the high sugar content of their diet they can't maintain normal blood sugar levels which can lead to depression and moodiness as the sugar drops.  Also their intestinal system suffers due to the amount of junk food they consume which disrupts the normal serotonin levels that the gut produces which in turn affects moods. Whole foods prevent all of these issues.

Well, that’s easy.  OBSERVE THIS SPECIAL FOOD PROGRAM.  It does it every time!  For six short days you will be on a FEAST—not a fast.  You will be filling your body with Nature’s life-giving foods—fruits and vegetables that contain all those precious vitamins and minerals.  When a sufficient amount of these live substances reaches the cells of your body, there will be a flushing and a cleansing such as you have never experienced before.  You will eliminate toxic material that has been with you for years—toxic material that has robbed you of your vitality.  When this gets all out, you will be like the car that has been cleaned of the carbon.  You will have plenty of energy—your complexion will undergo a marvelous transformation—you will feel like a baby—aches and pains will disappear -­your nerves will be at ease and you will feel so good that life will be a joy.

That is what this SPECIAL 6-DAY PROGRAM will do.  Follow directions carefully. When you start this program—STICK TO IT! Don’t try it 1 day and then quit! After this program, you are to ALWAYS have some fresh raw fruit or vegetables with every meal!

BREAKFAST FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS

15 minutes before you are ready to eat breakfast, squeeze the JUICE of a lemon in a medium glass of hot water and drink it.

Orange or Grapefruit Juice ……………………   8 ounces. You can take more if you desire, but be sure that you take 8 ounces at least.

Cottage            Cottage Cheese ……………………………………..  5 level tablespoonful. No more or no less.

Fresh Fruit……………………………………….        One-half pound.  You may eat more, but be sure to eat at least,

(No bananas or avocados)                                             1 pound. - You can eat only 1 kind of fruit, or you may mix.

 

Coffee or Tea ………………………………….                 No coffee may be used.  Herb tea 1 cup if desired.

Between breakfast and lunch you should- drink all the FRUIT and VEGETABLE juice you can hold.  Also, eat fresh raw vegetables and fruit.  The more live food, you consume, the more thorough will be the cleansing.  If you can’t get the fresh juices, us the canned variety. Make up a lot of VEGETABLE BROTH (see recipe on back).  Drink lots of this broth, as it is full of minerals.  V-8 juice or vegetable juice from health food store can be substituted.

LUNCH FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS –

Vegetable Broth …………………………..  Drink two cups during the meal.

 

Salad                                                                                    Make a chopped salad of fresh raw vegetables.  Use a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and salt.  Eat at least 8 LEVEL TABLESPOONSFUL, more if you desire.  Use four of the vegetables listed below: Artichokes, Asparagus, Beans, Beets, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Celery, Dandelions, Endive, Egg Plant, Fresh Green Corn, Fresh Green Peas, Green Peppers, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Lotus, Okra, Onions, Parsley, Parsnips, Pumpkin, Radishes, Rutabagas, Salsify, Spinach, Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes,

Turnips. (You may use the leaves or tops also.)

 

Dessert                                                     Fresh fruit with a little pure honey.

Coffee or Tea ………………………….                  Not at this meal.

 

Between lunch and dinner, drink all the fruit and vegetable juice you desire.  Eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables you want.  Fill up!  It's medicine for you.  REMEMBER: The purge comes from the vitamins and minerals in the food, so be sure to eat plenty.

DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS

Vegetable Broth ……Drink TWO CUPS during the meal, more if you desire.

Cooked Vegetables …………..                                  Select two or three of the different kinds listed above and cook them with butter.  Eat a generous helping of each. (No potatoes.)

Bread …………                                                       One medium slice WHOLE WHEAT bread with butter.

Dessert ………. Baked apple with cream or a salad of fresh fruits.  A little honey OK.

Coffee or Tea                                                        NOT at this meal.  And ... if you still feel hungry after dinner, eat fresh fruits and drink, fruit or vegetable juice ... ALL YOU WANT!

RECIPE FOR VEGETABLE BROTH

Take 7 carrots and 1 small bunch of celery and cut fine.  Place in 2 quarts hot water and boil for 15 minutes.  Add 1/3 bunch of parsley and a large handful of fresh spinach, cut fine.  Boil 10 minutes more.  Drain off the juice or broth.  Flavor with salt, onion, okra, tomatoes, green peppers or garlic. (You may save the vegetables and use for your cooked vegetables at dinner.)

The above recipe makes about 1 day's supply.  You can make more if desired, and keep in the refrigerator.  It can be used hot or cold.  The purpose of this broth is to FLUSH.  Drink lots of it during the six days.  It is full of minerals from the vegetables.  It is really a refreshing, soothing drink.  Enjoy!

 WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROGRAM

 The first day you may feel slight discomfort by having changed your regular mode of eating, but do not allow this to disturb you, for it is natural.  About the 3rd or 4th day, the bowels and kidneys will begin to move freely.  Much toxic material will be passed.  There may be a few minor symptoms as the result of this cleansing.  This is quite natural and is to be expected. - About the 5th day, you will feel a surge of energy.  You will be surprised at your­self.  Your complexion will have cleared up -- your eyes will begin to brighten -- you will feel wonderfully CLEAN inside.  The little cells that were so full of toxins are now clean, and they will begin to cry out for other food.  Continue on until the end of the 6th day; then combine your meals so they are balanced. -- Then keep up eating much fresh, raw vegetables and fruit, and you will be motivated by your better health!

A Healthy Nervous System

What does it mean to have a healthy nervous system?  Did you know your nervous system controls and coordinates everything in your body?  Did you know your stomach could not digest food properly if the nervous system was not regulating and controlling it?  Did you know that your heart would beat erratically  if the nervous system was not controlling and coordinates it.  Did you know without your nervous system's proper function you couldn't even sleep, breathe, move are have a normal existence?

We don't hear much about the importance of the nervous system, frankly because there's no pharmaceutical drug to make the nervous system function properly in each of these areas.

 Your ability to be aware of yourself and your environment, to be able to think or reason is dependent on a properly functioning nervous system.  Even to have a healthy sense of well-being depends on a cascade of chemical reactions that take place within a healthy nervous system.  In a sense, physically, you are your nervous system.  I don't mean that you're just physical; I mean that your ability to be self-aware is a function of your central nervous system.  So doesn’t it make sense that if you take care of your nervous system, then you take care of your health?  And did you know that the most common stress to your nervous system is misalignments of your neck and back?

Initial care for these misalignments is an intensive program of adjustments to obtain maximum balance to the spine.  But due to the limitations of matter and malformations due to genetic weaknesses, a perfect spine is not possible.  So after a corrective program we recommend some type of ongoing care.  Though each patient is responsible for determining how they're going to take care of their health we have recommendations that we encourage patients to consider.  One of those is our once a week wellness program.

Why once a week? 

After a corrective program the problems that are corrected tend to stay corrected unless you hurt that section again. The problems that are left in the spine are usually related to subtle malformations that don't allow certain joints to completely lock in place.   These joints are particularly sensitive to the normal stresses and strains that we put our bodies through on a 24-hour basis.  Coughing, sneezing, sitting postures or poor sleeping postures are just a few of the stresses that our bodies deal with everyday.  Add to that a lack of regular exercise, faulty diets and the effects on nerves and muscles of stress.  These factors can cause the loss of alignment and a buildup of stress (without pain)  on the nerves that are responsible for controlling our bodies.  The more often that you line up your spine the less stress that will be on your nervous system.  The more that your nervous system is free of stress the higher energy level that you'll experience.  Your resistance will be higher, in fact it has been shown that chiropractic patients who get regular chiropractic care have an immune system that functions 200% more effectively than the average person’s on the street.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POSTURE AND HEALTH Roger Sperry,Ph.D. (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1981) discovered that 90% of the brain’s activity is used to balance your body within the gravitational field of earth. If your body is mechanically distorted, it will affect the other 10% of the brain’s activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion and cognition. If the body framework (bone structure and spine) is misaligned it can impede or block the electrical and chemical transmissions of the nervous system, which controls all of your body’s functions. As we get older we can start noticing our bodies more than when we were younger. A lot of times these symptoms are completely reversible.
