IN THE NEWS: LACK OF SLEEP TIED TO MORE HEALTH RISKS FOR OBESE ADOLESCENTS For overweight and obese adolescents, a lack of sleep may be linked to a higher risk of developing diabetes, heart disease and stroke, Counsel and Heal reported. In a new study published in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers found that only one-third of participants were physically active for at least one hour a day. Furthermore, most teens only slept for approximately seven hours each night. The National Sleep Foundation recommends children between ages 10 to 17 should sleep for a totally of 8.5 to 9.5 hours per night.  While obese or overweight teens already had a high risk of developing cardiometabolic diseases, researchers found that a lack of sleep elevated this risk even further.

WELLNESS: TAKING ACETAMINOPHEN DURING PREGNANCY MAY INCREASE YOUR CHILD’S RISK OF ADHD Most people will take over-the-counter medication without thinking twice about it, which is probably why acetaminophen overdose is the leading cause for calls to Poison Control Centers across the US every year. Acetaminophen is also responsible for more than 56,000 emergency room visits, 2,600 hospitalizations, and an estimated 458 deaths due to acute liver failure1 each year. The study included data from more than 64,000 mothers and children in the Danish National Birth Cohort. Over 50 percent of the women reported taking acetaminophen while pregnant, which was found to be linked to: A 30 percent increased risk for ADHD in the child during the first seven years of life, 37 percent increased risk of being diagnosed with hyperkinetic disorder (HKD), a severe form of ADHD

DIET: EXCESSIVE SUGAR AND LACK OF PREVENTIVE MEASURES THREATEN WORLD WITH DISASTROUS LEVELS OF HEART DISEASE AND CANCER  A recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal JAMA Internal Medicine4 examined the associations between added sugar consumption and cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths. The study did not include naturally occurring sugars in the diet, focusing only on added sugars. The study, which thankfully has met with robust media coverage, found that: Among American adults, mean percentage of daily calories from added sugar increased from 15.7 percent in 1988-1994 to 16.8 percent in 1999-2004 Mean percentage of daily calories from added sugar decreased to 14.9 percent in 2005-2010 Most adults (just over 71 percent) get 10 percent or more of their daily calories from added sugar Approximately 10 percent of American adults got 25 percent or more of their daily calories from added sugar in 2005-2010 The most common sources of added sugar are sugar-sweetened beverages, grain-based desserts, fruit drinks, dairy desserts, and candy.

If I ask most people on the street what was the main contributor to heart disease then cholesterol would be the first thing out of most people's mouth. If I ask you the number one way of maintaining healthy bones most people would say consuming more calcium. My question to you is: did you arrive at these conclusions by your own in-depth study of the research and science or have you opened up a medical textbook to determine how these conditions develop and exactly what these conditions are?  Let me give you some facts: one of the largest studies, I'm talking real-life studies not theoretical studies, was a Harvard study of 78,000 nurses. The facts are the nurses that consume the most calcium had the most bone fractures. Asian women living in their own culture eating their own cultural diet get one third the calcium that American women get and osteoporosis is extremely rare in their society. When they move to the US and incorporate the US diet they become the top risk group for osteoporosis.

The next fact is the cholesterol theory of heart disease first gained its acceptance in the 1950s. Medical nutritionist Dr. Keyes supposedly correlated the level of fat intake with heart disease in six countries and even though his theory was rejected at the time he used political maneuvering by becoming part of the Heart Association and finally got his theory accepted. When you look at his original research you will  see a study of 23 countries trying to make this correlation and he had to eliminate 16 of these countries in order to make his theory look correct statistically. When you add back the 16 countries he conveniently eliminated the correlation just doesn't stand up. And between the 1950s and about 1976 there are six different major studies trying to correlate fat in the diet with heart disease and they have all failed. In fact every major study from 1969 through the present has failed to support the cholesterol theory.

One of the longest continual studies is ongoing today started in 1948 in Framingham Massachusetts. This study involves 5000 residents and has shown some amazing contradictions to the cholesterol theory of heart disease. In fact this study has shown after the age 47 the patients with the highest cholesterol outlive the patients with lower cholesterol levels. This study also shows those who ate more saturated fat weighed less and had more energy than those on the low-fat diet.

In April 1996 the second International symposium on dietary fats and oils consumption in health and disease was hosted by the Southwest University medical school in Dallas Texas. Researchers from around the world presented their findings on the effects of fat in the human diet. After the presentations showing the subjects following the low-fat diet hadn't got rid of their obesity, and not lowered their cholesterol levels, had lowered their HDL levels (the good cholesterol), and had increase their blood levels of triglycerides (a major risk factor for heart disease), the moderators of the symposium pronounce the low-fat diet a failure.

 The strongest evidence points to inflammation as the soil in which obesity, diabetes, and heart disease develop from. So strategies to reduce inflammation will lead to the best chance of better health. This is where diet and lifestyle are very important. There are several factors that lead to inflammation in the body which include: junk food (highly refined carbohydrates), hydrogenated oils that include trans fats, elevation in bad prostaglandins and hormones like insulin which are produced by the overabundance of refined vegetable oils and refined carbohydrates and sugar, and the reduced amount of helpful antioxidants and pH balancing foods and beverages that reduce the excess acidity of the body.

So as we look to diet and lifestyle (because even too much aerobic exercise without appropriate amounts of antioxidants in the diet can also lead to inflammation) then selecting the proper diet is crucial. Unfortunately there is no one diet that fits everybody and so you need to match the right ratio of fats, carbohydrates and proteins that fit your genetic makeup.

The body typing system that I use consists of four different body types: thyroid, gonadal, adrenal and pituitary. These four types tend to correspond the four personality types: Sanguine (This type is characterized by spontaneity, optimism, enthusiasm, high energy, mental flexibility, novelty seeking, impulsiveness and curiosity)., Phlegmatic (These people are mainly defined by their social skills, such as their ability to express themselves and read other people face expressions and body language. They do well at connecting facts and seeing “the big picture”. They are nurturing, sympathetic, agreeable and emotionally expressive). Choleric (This type is associated with testosterone, which is also present in men and women, but more so in men. These people are direct, focused, tough, analytical, logical and strategic. They have a great deal of courage and like to compete, often against each other. They often have square jaws, high cheekbones and high foreheads and love to use words like “intellect”, “ambition” and “challenge”) and Melancholic (tend to be calm, loyal and orderly, just as their personality name sounds. They are cautious and conventional. These men and women inherited genes in the serotonin system and their favorite words are “family”, “loyal”, “respect”, “caring”, “values” and “moral”). Most people are unique blend of four different types of personality, where all of the traits are present to some extent.

These four body types can be divided into two groups. We can call one group the protein group (about 70% of US) and the other the complex carbohydrate group (30%) the protein group tends to be sensitive to carbohydrates particularly refined sugars and grains. The carbohydrate group tends to be sensitive to fats (eggs, butter and red meat), salt and spices.  So a diet too high in sugars and grain can lead to inflammation in the protein type. A diet high in fats and oils can lead to inflammation in the carbohydrate type.

In the area diet this includes eating your body type diet but also consuming enough water for your body weight. In order to determine how much water you need to drink you divide your weight in half and consider that answer in ounces. For instance a hundred pound person their cleansing dose of fluids would be 50 ounces 80% of that would give you the minimum fluids they should drink which is 40 ounces. Dehydration can cause a whole host of conditions and cause any condition your suffering with to be a little worse. Since the EPA recommends boiling city water before drinking we encourage our patients to drink filtered water. Also when it comes to water you can get water in different pH ranges. If you're dealing with an inflammatory chemistry your body is going to be acidic. And so alkaline water can be very effective in the overall management of your body chemistry.

As we consider water we also consider detoxification because we live in a toxic environment. And so most patients need to undergo some level of detoxification in order to remove important stressors in their ability to maintain normal function and better health. So drinking your cleansing dose of fluids can be helpful in detoxification. And when it comes to how much alkaline water we recommend you should drink about a liter a day. IN THE NEWS:  MARIJUANA USE DURING PREGNANCY AFFECTS BABY'S BRAIN Using marijuana during pregnancy could affect a baby's brain development by interfering with how brain cells are wired, a new study in mice and human tissue suggests. Researchers studied marijuana's effects on mice and brain tissue from human fetuses, and found that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, interferes with the formation of connections between nerve cells in the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for higher thinking skills and forming memories. Previous long-term studies have shown that children exposed to marijuana in the womb may have an increased risk of showing cognitive effects, seeking out drugs, or having attention deficit disorder, anxiety or depression, according to the study.

In the study 21 children were examined. All these children showed acute inflammation in the inner ear with a red and bulging tympanic membrane accompanied by an increased mean oral temperature of over 100 degrees F. The results of the study showed that after the chiropractic adjustments, the red and bulging tympanic membrane returned to normal in 95% of the children and a decrease in average oral temperature to 98.6 degrees F.

IN THE NEWS: YOUNG ADULTS 'DAMAGE DNA' WITH WEEKEND ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism states that around four out of five college students in the US drink alcohol and 1,825 college students between the ages of 18 and 24 die each year as a result of unintentional alcohol-related injuries. An experiment, called the comet test, was conducted to see whether the participants' DNA was also affected by alcohol consumption. This involved taking out the nucleus of lymphocytic cells in the blood and putting it through electrophoresis. The experiment revealed that the group who consumed alcohol showed significantly bigger comet tails in the electrophoresis, compared with the group that did not drink alcohol. In detail, 8% of cells were damaged in the control group, but 44% were damaged in the drinking group. This means the drinking group had 5.3 times more damage to their cells.

For example, besides its anti-inflammatory properties, previous research from Japan suggests this powerful fruit may also help protect against liver damage. Due to its beneficial raw fat content, avocado enables your body to more efficiently absorb fat-soluble nutrients (such as alpha- and beta-carotene and lutein) in other foods eaten in conjunction. Contain compounds that appear to inhibit and destroy oral cancer cells Can help improve lipid profiles in both healthy individuals and those with non optimized HDL/ total cholesterol levels). In one study,8 healthy individuals saw a 16 percent decrease of serum total cholesterol level following a one-week long diet high in monounsaturated fat from avocados. In those with elevated cholesterol levels, the avocado diet resulted in a 17 percent decrease of serum total cholesterol, and a 22 percent decrease of both LDL-cholesterol and triglycerides, along with an 11 percent increase of the so-called “good” HDL cholesterol.

CHIROPRACTIC:  IMPROVEMENT IN HEARING AFTER CHIROPRACTIC CARE: A CASE SERIES  CASE PRESENTATION:   Fifteen patients are presented (9 male, 6 female) with a mean age of 54.3 (range 34-71). A Welch Allyn AudioScope 3 was used to screen frequencies of 1000, 2000, 4000 and 500 Hz respectively at three standard decibel levels 20 decibels (dB), 25dB and 40dB, respectively, before and immediately after the first chiropractic intervention. Several criteria were used to determine hearing impairment. Ventry & Weinstein criteria of missing one or more tones in either ear at 40dB and Speech-frequency criteria of missing one or more tones in either ear at 25dB. All patients were classified as hearing impaired though greater on the right. At 40dB using the Ventry & Weinstein criteria, 6 had hearing restored, 7 improved and 2 had no change. At 25dB using the Speech-frequency criteria, none were restored, 11 improved, 4 had no change and 3 missed a tone.

The sad fact is that pharmaceutical companies have taken over the healthcare system and if you're not an informed consumer then you will line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies and damage your kid's own health. Disease is not a drug deficiency, diseases is a deficiency within the body. Chiropractic physicians have the training to reestablish the body's own communication systems necessary to keep the system health. Chiropractic physicians have the training in diet, allergies, detox protocols and nutritional therapies to reestablish normal function of the systems of the body including the immune system. Antibiotics weaken the immune system. Unfortunately the food industry is not your friend. Virtually all the foods marketed to kids will wreak havoc with their health. Most of these foods are extremely high in refined carbohydrates which depress your child's immune system and develop the chemistry prone to disease. By simply feeding your kids natural foods: eggs, vegetables, fruits, meat, whole grains in moderation, seeds, nuts and some dairy in moderation you can establish a chemistry of health in your child. Junk food like most cereals, candies, refined grains in most noodles, pizzas, white bread, crackers etc. leads to a chemistry that is prone to disease. The fact that a lot of kids go through periods of time of “apparent health” is a miracle of the creation we call our bodies.

SIX DAY CLEANSING DIET

 

This is your six-day special food program. For best results it must be followed exactly as written.

When an automobile is full of carbon, it has no pep.  It is clogged up.  You may put in the very best gas and oil, but the speed is not there.  The sensible and logical thing to do is to take the car to a mechanic and have the carbon cleaned out.  After that is done, what happens?  The car seems like new. There is plenty of power.

Your body is comparable to the car.  When the cells, of which you have many millions, are clogged up with ACID—SUGAR—MUCUS—PUS—etc-, you have no pep, your appetite is poor, you do not sleep well, your complexion is-bad, your eyes are dull, you suffer from aches and pains you are nervous and irritable, you feel indifferent—everything seems wrong.  Life is not so much fun as it once was; in fact, you are really ill.

Fresh Fruit……………………………………….        One-half pound.  You may eat more, but be sure to eat at least,

(No bananas or avocados)                                             1 pound. - You can eat only 1 kind of fruit, or you may mix.

 

Coffee or Tea ………………………………….                 No coffee may be used.  Herb tea 1 cup if desired.

Between breakfast and lunch you should- drink all the FRUIT and VEGETABLE juice you can hold.  Also, eat fresh raw vegetables and fruit.  The more live food, you consume, the more thorough will be the cleansing.  If you can’t get the fresh juices, us the canned variety. Make up a lot of VEGETABLE BROTH (see recipe on back).  Drink lots of this broth, as it is full of minerals.  V-8 juice or vegetable juice from health food store can be substituted.

LUNCH FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS –

Vegetable Broth …………………………..  Drink two cups during the meal.

 

Salad                                                                                    Make a chopped salad of fresh raw vegetables.  Use a dressing of olive oil, lemon juice and salt.  Eat at least 8 LEVEL TABLESPOONSFUL, more if you desire.  Use four of the vegetables listed below: Artichokes, Asparagus, Beans, Beets, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Cucumbers, Celery, Dandelions, Endive, Egg Plant, Fresh Green Corn, Fresh Green Peas, Green Peppers, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Lotus, Okra, Onions, Parsley, Parsnips, Pumpkin, Radishes, Rutabagas, Salsify, Spinach, Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes,

Turnips. (You may use the leaves or tops also.)

 

Dessert                                                     Fresh fruit with a little pure honey.

Coffee or Tea ………………………….                  Not at this meal.

 

Between lunch and dinner, drink all the fruit and vegetable juice you desire.  Eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables you want.  Fill up!  It's medicine for you.  REMEMBER: The purge comes from the vitamins and minerals in the food, so be sure to eat plenty.

DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS

Vegetable Broth ……Drink TWO CUPS during the meal, more if you desire.

Cooked Vegetables …………..                                  Select two or three of the different kinds listed above and cook them with butter.  Eat a generous helping of each. (No potatoes.)

Bread …………                                                       One medium slice WHOLE WHEAT bread with butter.

Dessert ………. Baked apple with cream or a salad of fresh fruits.  A little honey OK.

Coffee or Tea                                                        NOT at this meal.  And ... if you still feel hungry after dinner, eat fresh fruits and drink, fruit or vegetable juice ... ALL YOU WANT!

RECIPE FOR VEGETABLE BROTH

Take 7 carrots and 1 small bunch of celery and cut fine.  Place in 2 quarts hot water and boil for 15 minutes.  Add 1/3 bunch of parsley and a large handful of fresh spinach, cut fine.  Boil 10 minutes more.  Drain off the juice or broth.  Flavor with salt, onion, okra, tomatoes, green peppers or garlic. (You may save the vegetables and use for your cooked vegetables at dinner.)

The above recipe makes about 1 day's supply.  You can make more if desired, and keep in the refrigerator.  It can be used hot or cold.  The purpose of this broth is to FLUSH.  Drink lots of it during the six days.  It is full of minerals from the vegetables.  It is really a refreshing, soothing drink.  Enjoy!

 WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROGRAM

 The first day you may feel slight discomfort by having changed your regular mode of eating, but do not allow this to disturb you, for it is natural.  About the 3rd or 4th day, the bowels and kidneys will begin to move freely.  Much toxic material will be passed.  There may be a few minor symptoms as the result of this cleansing.  This is quite natural and is to be expected. - About the 5th day, you will feel a surge of energy.  You will be surprised at your­self.  Your complexion will have cleared up -- your eyes will begin to brighten -- you will feel wonderfully CLEAN inside.  The little cells that were so full of toxins are now clean, and they will begin to cry out for other food.  Continue on until the end of the 6th day; then combine your meals so they are balanced. -- Then keep up eating much fresh, raw vegetables and fruit, and you will be motivated by your better health!

IN THE NEWS:  FDA TO PHASE OUT SOME ANTIBIOTIC USE IN ANIMAL PRODUCTION U.S. regulators announced new guidelines that call on global pharmaceutical companies to phase out the use of some antibiotics meant to enhance growth in animals used for food, hoping to stem a growing tide of bacterial resistance to the same drugs when they are prescribed for humans. "Our fear ... is that there will be no reduction in antibiotic use as companies will either ignore the plan altogether or simply switch from using antibiotics for routine growth promotion to using the same antibiotics for routine disease prevention," said Steven Roach, senior analyst with advocacy group Keep Antibiotics Working.

CHIROPRACTIC:  Consumer Reports Lists Chiropractic Patients As Most Satisfied  About 80 percent of U.S. adults have at some point been bothered by back pain. The Consumer Reports Health Ratings Center recently surveyed more than 14,000 subscribers who had lower-back pain in the past year but had never had back surgery. More than half said pain severely limited their daily routine for a week or longer, and 88 percent said it recurred through the year. Many said the pain interfered with sleep, sex, and efforts to maintain a healthy weight. Back pain can be tough to treat. Most of our respondents tried five or six different treatments. They rated the helpfulness of the treatments tried and their satisfaction with the health-care professionals visited. Hands-on therapies were among the top-rated. A Healthy Nervous System

What does it mean to have a healthy nervous system?  Did you know your nervous system controls and coordinates everything in your body?  Did you know your stomach could not digest food properly if the nervous system was not regulating and controlling it?  Did you know that your heart would beat erratically  if the nervous system was not controlling and coordinates it.  Did you know without your nervous system's proper function you couldn't even sleep, breathe, move are have a normal existence?

We don't hear much about the importance of the nervous system, frankly because there's no pharmaceutical drug to make the nervous system function properly in each of these areas.

Initial care for these misalignments is an intensive program of adjustments to obtain maximum balance to the spine.  But due to the limitations of matter and malformations due to genetic weaknesses, a perfect spine is not possible.  So after a corrective program we recommend some type of ongoing care.  Though each patient is responsible for determining how they're going to take care of their health we have recommendations that we encourage patients to consider.  One of those is our once a week wellness program.

Why once a week? 

After a corrective program the problems that are corrected tend to stay corrected unless you hurt that section again. The problems that are left in the spine are usually related to subtle malformations that don't allow certain joints to completely lock in place.   These joints are particularly sensitive to the normal stresses and strains that we put our bodies through on a 24-hour basis.  Coughing, sneezing, sitting postures or poor sleeping postures are just a few of the stresses that our bodies deal with everyday.  Add to that a lack of regular exercise, faulty diets and the effects on nerves and muscles of stress.  These factors can cause the loss of alignment and a buildup of stress (without pain)  on the nerves that are responsible for controlling our bodies.  The more often that you line up your spine the less stress that will be on your nervous system.  The more that your nervous system is free of stress the higher energy level that you'll experience.  Your resistance will be higher, in fact it has been shown that chiropractic patients who get regular chiropractic care have an immune system that functions 200% more effectively than the average person’s on the street.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN POSTURE AND HEALTH Roger Sperry,Ph.D. (Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1981) discovered that 90% of the brain’s activity is used to balance your body within the gravitational field of earth. If your body is mechanically distorted, it will affect the other 10% of the brain’s activity, which controls all the other body functions such as breathing, digestion and cognition. 2. Cheese
Studies from the last decade show that cheese, with its low carbohydrate and high calcium and phosphate content, provides several benefits for your teeth. It helps balance your mouth's pH (an acidic pH encourages the growth of cavity-causing bacteria). 3. Green Tea
Green tea (Camellia sinensis) contains substances called catechins that kill the bacteria in your mouth that turn sugar into plaque (a sticky mass of bacteria, sugars, proteins, and fats that produces cavity-causing acid when it comes in contact with sugary or starchy foods). Catechins also wipe out the bacteria that cause bad breath. Try This: Drink 2 to 5 cups of green tea (regular or decaffeinated) a day, says Mindy Green, director of research at the Herb Research Foundation in Boulder, Colo. Consider making a thermos of green tea to drink at work. The night before, steep 3 to 4 green tea bags in 4 cups of boiling-hot water in a covered thermos for three to five minutes. Remove the bags. Serve the tea the next day over ice or after reheating it.

4. Kiwi Fruit
For their size, kiwis pack more vitamin C than any other fruit. In fact, one large kiwi supplies more than 100 percent of your recommended daily amount. If you don't get enough vitamin C, research shows that the collagen network in your gums can break down, making your gums tender and more susceptible to the bacteria that cause periodontal disease. Try This: Instead of topping your morning oatmeal with brown sugar, use a sliced kiwi.

5. Onions
Onions contain powerful antibacterial sulfur compounds. In a 1997 test tube study, onions killed various types of bacteria, including S. mutans. 8. Shiitake Mushrooms
A 2000 study in Caries Research showed that lentinan, a sugar found in shiitake mushrooms, prevents mouth bacteria from creating plaque. Try This: A few times a week, add four to five sliced shiitakes to soups or stir-fries. Buy fresh shiitakes or dried ones, which can be reconstituted by soaking them in hot water for about 25 minutes before use.

9. Wasabi
Otherwise known as Japanese horse-radish, this condiment not only provides zing to sushi, it also protects your teeth. Try This: Eating wasabi a few times a week will protect you from cavities. 10. Water

This is an objective response that is repeatable.  We observe this response in the apparent change in arm or leg lengths.  The response of tapping the knee and observing the reflex extension of the lower leg is the exact same reflex we observe.  If you elicited the reflex at the knee with the leg straight you would observe a temporary shortening of that leg as the muscles contracted.  This biofeedback reflex mechanism is the basis we use for monitoring in VEGA testing.

VEGA Testing is based on the phenomenon of “medicine testing” found by  Dr. Reinhardt Voll, M.D., a German  medical doctor, in his work with electrical acupuncture.  Dr. Helmut Schimmel, M.D., also of Germany, later  developed Dr. Voll’s work into a system of substance testing now known as VEGA  testing.

Through VEGA testing we can also tell if dental fillings are having an adverse effect on the body due to mercury leaching into the system.  It will indicate the presence of a toxic overload, and tell if that overload might be due simply to metabolic toxins, or if it is from heavy metals or insecticides that have entered through the environment’s food or water supply.

 In the Vega test system the concept of bio-score, based on evaluating the body’s response to 21 ampules for  toxic load of the body,  relates to the level of over-all stress or disease within the body.  If we gave each organ that was malfunctioning a numerical value, then added them all up, that is the idea behind the bio-score.

By having a score like this when starting therapy we can evaluate our treatment program any time we would like.  As the body heals itself the score will reflect this by going down.  If the score becomes fixed then a change in the treatment program becomes necessary.  The bio-score is based on the body's reaction to one or more diagnostic ampoules in a set of 21.  The more ampoules that the body reacts to, the more problems that  represents.    If you react to two ampoules, say number 10 and 21, then your score would be 21x2. If you reacted to 3, 10, 16, 21 then your score would be 21x4.  Knowing each number within your score is not important, just your top number and how  many, tell the story.  In those two examples, 21x2 would be better than 21x4.  The following tells what to expect with different readings:

When we sleep well, we wake up feeling refreshed, alert and ready to face daily challenges. When we don't, every part of our lives can suffer. Our jobs, relationships, productivity, health and safety (and that of those around us) are all put at risk. And lack of sleep due to sleep loss or sleep disorders is taking a serious toll.

  The 2002 National Sleep Foundation (NSF) Sleep in America poll found that 74 percent of American adults are experiencing a sleeping problem a few nights a week or more, 39% get less than seven hours of sleep each weeknight, and more than one in three (37%) are so sleepy during the day that it interferes with daily activities. In the past century, we have reduced our average time in sleep. Though our society has changed, our brains and bodies have not. Sleep deprivation is affecting us all and we are paying the price.

Getting enough sleep refers to the amount of sleep you need to not feel sleepy    the next day. If sleepiness interferes with or makes it difficult to do your daily activities, you probably need more sleep. Although sleep experts generally recommend an average of 7-9 hours per night, some people can get along with less while others need as much as ten hours to feel alert the next day. Sleep requirements vary over the life cycle. Newborns and infants need a lot of sleep and have several periods of sleep throughout a 24-hour time period. Naps are important to them as well as to toddlers who may nap up to the age of 5. As children enter adolescence, their sleep patterns shift to a later sleep-wake cycle, but they still need around 9 hours of sleep. Throughout adulthood, even as we get older, we need 7-9 hours of sleep. Sleep patterns may change, but the need for sleep remains the same.

TIPS FOR GOOD SLEEP

"              Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea, soft drinks, chocolate) and nicotine (cigarettes, tobacco products) close to bedtime.

"              Avoid alcohol as it can lead to disrupted sleep.

"              Exercise regularly, but complete your workout at least 3 hours before bedtime.

"              Establish a regular relaxing, not alerting, bedtime routine (e.g. taking a bath or relaxing in a hot tub).

"              Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet and preferably cool and comfortable.

You can get a full 8 hours of sleep but if you went to bed at 2am and woke up at 10am, you will not be in tip top shape. Definitely not compared to if you slept at 10pm and woke up at 6am. It's crucial to have not only the right amount of sleep, but to also sleep at the right time. The best time range to go to bed to help you wake up in great shape is between 9pm and midnight.

   From 11pm to 3am, most of your blood circulation concentrates in your liver. Your liver gets larger when filled with more blood. This is an important time when your body undergoes detoxification process. Your liver neutralizes and breaks down body toxins accumulated throughout the day.   However if you don't sleep at this time, your liver cannot carry out this detoxification process smoothly.

                When your brain is sleep deprived it's very hard to maintain focus and so conversations are a big challenge. It's only normal to want to completely control the mechanism of conversations when you feel out of control in maintaining your thought process. During the healing process your body can go through healing crises that can produce different unpleasant symptoms. These might be headaches, nausea, sight fever, or flu-type symptoms, etc.

These, although not extremely common, can be a part of the normal healing process, as your body does its House cleaning and mobilizes toxins to eliminate them from the body. These toxins can in turn cause symptoms as they exit your system.

Also, as we begin re-aligning the segments of your spine, you may sometimes notice some muscle tension, muscle tightness, and some aches or pains that are new to you. This also can be a normal process, as the muscles, ligaments, and tendons start to change their positions, and to adapt to the corrective process.

These symptoms are ordinarily short-lived whether they are the symptoms of de-toxing (usually over in a few days) or the soreness and stiffness associated with the beginning of adjustments (usually eliminated by the second or third adjustment).

Simply experiencing pain or soreness does not mean that the adjustment was delivered improperly; it only means that your muscles do not readily change their tight, taut contractions and allow your vertebrae to move back into their correct positions. Sometimes mineral therapy is necessary to completely correct the muscle tightness associated with the discomfort after the adjustment.

In our society we have been given the misinformation that we can have a quick approach to health. Exercise is a word that might conjure up images of sweating, groaning and hard work. Exercise also brings to mind fitness, endurance and a well shaped body. The type of exercise that a person needs depends on the person's goals. If you want to sculpture your body, then weight lifting might be your fastest form. If you want to keep in shape, then toning and stretching might be the best. When it comes to your health, then the type of exercise needed should relate to your metabolism. For instance, if you're a thyroid type endurance is important, so maybe jogging, aerobic dancing or swimming would serve you best.

If you're a G- type then mind/body exercises that concentrate on upper body coordination are best, like kung fu or karate, ballet or jazz dancing. If you're a P- type you need mind/body exercises that are not highly repetitive. P-types need complicated aerobic exercise: Tai chi or karate with a balanced nautilus program once a week. There is no one exercise that fits everybody so finding one you enjoy is the key. Also finding ways to keep motivated are crucial, like having a friend that you exercise with. When it comes to exercise moderation is important. Some people become obsessed and downright addicted to over-exercise. Exercise can cause the release of some chemicals that can give a person a natural high. If you're having chemical problems you can become addicted to exercise because of the way it makes you feel. If you find yourself exercising to the point of injury or you have multiple injuries in your history of exercise it could mean that you're addicted.

Exercise should not be an excuse for not correcting metabolic problems that you have. It is true exercise can help your metabolism but it won't correct imbalances that are nutritionally related. If you find you are using exercise in that manner you need to go through a nutritional program to balance your metabolism. Also to use exercise to control neck or back pain could be a misuse of exercise. If you find that you have spinal pain if you don't exercise than you have an unresolved structural problem that you're only covering up by exercise. Even though the pain is gone the degenerative processes is still going forward. Over time you'll develop a problem that exercise will no longer help. Bad posture doesn't happen overnight. It's a gradual process. Bad posture is a response to how you hold your body in various positions, such as sitting, slouching and standing. After a period of time, your posture muscles become weak and other muscles take over the work, making it comfortable to slouch.

Your body responds to your bad postural habits, and soon begins to adapt to these habitual poses until they begin to feel "normal ", making it comfortable to slouch and end up with all kinds of aches and pains - because your back muscles are overworked and overstretched.

Kefir (pronounced /ke’fier/ ke-FEER) (or alternatively kefi-rs, keefir, kephir, kewra, talai, mudu kekiya, milk kefir, búlgaros) is a fermented milk drink.

The composition of kefir depends greatly on the type of milk that was fermented, including the concentration of vitamin B12. During the fermentation, changes in composition of nutrients and other ingredients have also been shown to occur. Research has shown, however, that lactose maldigestors are able to tolerate kefir, providing the number of live bacteria present in this beverage consumed is high enough. It is believed that the bacteria in the kefir or yoghurt matrix are protected by the buffering effect of the yoghurt. It has also been shown that fermented milk products have a slower transit time than milk, which may further improve lactose digestion.

What A Pain In The Neck!

Got neck pain? If so, you’re not alone since millions of Americans are in the same boat.

There are many causes, some serious, others not so serious. As you might suspect, neck pain can be related to employment, recreational activities, or other activities of daily living like finally cleaning out that garage.

Most of the time, it may be a result of more subtle reasons such as poor posture or stress.

Neck pain can be brought on by sleeping in a bad position (falling asleep on the couch late at night watching TV), or looking up at the stars for a time, or when seated at your computer.

From a clinical perspective, most of the time you’ve either strained a muscle, or spinal joints are subluxated, or ligaments like the disc are injured.

If your spine is unhealthy, you may lose your normal neck curve and suffer from pain, nerve irritation and disc degeneration. Although many doctors tell their patients that this is due to age, disc degeneration can be found in young children while some older adults are relatively free of it. One of the most common causes of disc degeneration is years of uncorrected subluxations. Over time uncorrected subluxations degeneration causes arthritic changes in the vertebrae such as lipping or spurring (bony growths), disc thinning and deterioration. Studies show little or no correlation between the degree of pain felt in the neck and arthritic changes found on X-rays and MRI. Subluxation degeneration is considered a defense mechanism that tries to stabilize an off-balance spine.

First of all understand your head weighs about 10 pounds. Try carrying that much weight around all day in your arms and see how it feels by day’s end!

Standing:  Maintain natural curves of the spine; not too stiff or too relaxed. Tighten abdomen, tuck buttocks, hold head erect with ears positioned over shoulders.

Sitting: Sit back in chair, not on edge, feet on floor. Position rolled towel or pillow above belt line to get additional low back support.

Lying: Avoid sleeping on stomach. Lie on your side with knees bent. Use firm mattress. Use cervical pillow or position pillow so neck remains as straight (horizontal), as possible.
