DIET: What Are Dates Good For? When it comes to the number of minerals, vitamins and health-benefiting phytonutrients in dates, suffice it to say there are a lot of them. They're also easily digested, allowing your body to make full use of their nutritional value. Dietary fiber in dates helps to move waste smoothly through your colon and helps prevent LDL (bad) cholesterol absorption. It may also bind with substances that can decrease biological compounds that cause cancer. The iron content in dates, a component of hemoglobin in red blood cells, determines the balance of oxygen in the blood. Potassium, an electrolyte, helps control your heart rate and blood pressure. B vitamins in dates, such as the carotenoids lutein and zeaxanthin, are absorbed into the retina to maintain optimal light-filtering functions and protect against macular degeneration. Additionally, dates contain vitamins A and K. Vitamin A protects the eyes, maintains healthy skin and mucous membranes, and even protects the lungs and mouth from developing cancer. Tannins, which are flavonoids as well as polyphenolic antioxidants, fight infection and inflammation and help prevent excessive bleeding (anti-hemorrhagic). Vitamin K is a blood coagulant that also helps metabolize your bones. Copper, magnesium, manganese, zinc, niacin, pantothenic acid and riboflavin are also present in dates and provide their own unique preventive and healing functions. Together, these cofactors help your body metabolize carbohydrates, protein and fats. Eating dates in moderation can contribute many health benefits, such as protecting against damage to cells from free radicals, helping lower the risk of stroke, coronary heart disease and the development of colon, prostate, breast, endometrial, lung and pancreatic cancers

IN THE NEWS: What Is Pine Oil? Pine oil has antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, antiseptic and antirheumatic properties. It works as a good decongestant and expectorant for respiratory ailments as well. In aromatherapy, pine oil is indicated and used for cuts, lice, excessive perspiration, scabies, sores on the skin, arthritis, gout, muscular aches and pains, asthma, bronchitis, common colds and flu, and fatigue. Pine oil is also a natural analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent, which makes it a potential substitute for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) that come with many side effects. Pine oil is not only valued for its health benefits, but also for its practical uses. This essential oil can be used as: Fragrance — You can use a few drops of pine oil as fragrance when making your own soaps, detergents, lotions, candles and ointments. Insect repellant — To protect your wool sweaters from moths and other insects, pour 10 drops of pine oil onto small pieces of untreated wood. Place the pieces of wood in your closets or drawers. Air freshener — Eliminate the awful smell of cigarettes and stale air by adding four drops of pine oil to a cup of water. Pour the mixture in a spray bottle, shake it well and spray it to instantly freshen up your room. Avoid spraying it on furniture. Massage oil before and after exercise — Create your own pre- and post-workout massage oil to inhibit or soothe strained muscles. Add three drops of pine oil, juniper berry oil and rosemary oil in 2 ounces of jojoba oil. The most common ways to administer pine oil are orally, topically and through inhalation.

CHIROPRACTIC: 10 Researched Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments One of the best things about receiving chiropractic adjustments is that they are a completely drug-free path to healing the body naturally. Chiropractic benefits including helping to naturally improve problems such as: Back pain-Headaches-Bowel regularity-Improved mental clarity-Ear infections-Neck pain-Arthritis and joint pain-Scoliosis-Asthma-Blood pressure-Healthy pregnancy-Organ function-Surgery prevention. the very first chiropractic patient in history was named William Harvey Lillard, who experienced difficulty hearing due to compression of the nerves leading to his ears. He was treated by “the founder of chiropractic care,” David. D. Palmer, who gave Lillard spinal adjustments in order to reduce destructive nerve compressions and restore his hearing. After doing extensive research about physiology, Palmer believed that Lillard’s hearing loss was due to a misalignment that blocked the spinal nerves that controlled the inner ear (an example of vertebral subluxation). Palmer went on to successfully treat other patients and eventually trained other practitioners how to do the same. The first college of chiropractic was founded in 1897 and named after Palmer, called the Palmer Chiropractic School & Cure.

IN THE NEWS: Chronic fatigue: Overactive immune system 'may trigger ME-like symptoms' overactive immune system may help explain the cause of chronic fatigue syndrome, scientists from King's College London have suggested. Many sufferers of CFS (chronic fatigue syndrome), or ME (Myalgic Encephalopathy), say their condition began with a challenge to their immune system like an infection. The scientists studied 55 patients with Hepatitis C who were given a drug that causes a similar response to a virus. Eighteen of those patients had an overactive immune system and went on to develop CFS-like symptoms. Chronic fatigue syndrome is a long-term illness characterized by extreme tiredness. Lead researcher Dr Alice Russell from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) said: "For the first time, we have shown that people who are prone to develop a CFS-like illness have an overactive immune system, both before and during a challenge to the immune system. "Our findings suggest that people who have an exaggerated immune response to a trigger may be more at risk of developing CFS." Senior researcher, Prof Carmine Pariante, added: "This is a light in the fog, a direction of travel. Although screening is a long way off, our results are the first step in identifying those at risk and catching the illness in its crucial early stages." Note: besides the nervous system two organs within the immune system that regulated are the spleen and thymus. In conditions like mentioned above the thymus gland tends to be the organ that’s malfunctioning leading to inappropriate immune responses. Nutritional therapy along with chiropractic care is extremely effective in addressing these in system disorder. Chiropractic first, drug 2nd and surgery last.

WELLNESS: HOW DOES CHIROPRACTIC PROMOTE OVERALL WELLNESS? Chiropractors know that adjustments are good for your general health. Millions of satisfied patients cannot be wrong. But what do chiropractors know that the rest of us do not? They know the nervous system is the one system in the body that directly affects every other system. This is because nerves conduct sensory information from every part of the body and then delivers this information to the brain. Once there, the brain analyzes the information to determine what the body needs to maintain a healthy state. So the health of this system is paramount to the good health of the rest of the body. Chiropractors recognize that misalignment in the spine can interfere with proper nervous system function. More specifically, chiropractors study the effects of vertebral subluxations – conditions of the spine where alignment and/or movement patterns of the vertebrae are abnormal. When this occurs, imbalances cause irritation and inflammation. In turn, this can cause interference with information that is transmitted along nerves and spinal cord. Chiropractors are the only health care professionals specifically trained to locate and correct spinal subluxations. For decades, scientific research has focused on the use of chiropractic adjustments for low back pain, neck pain, and headaches. In fact, there is now clear evidence to recommend chiropractors as the go-to professionals for spinal pain syndromes. However, with the rising popularity of wellness- based philosophies focused on non-traditional approaches to health, chiropractors are being asked to justify their role. In a recent report from the Center for Disease Control, the four most popular forms of alternative and complementary medicine were listed as natural products, deep breathing, meditation, and chiropractic! In a multi-nation study involving hundreds of chiropractors and thousands of chiropractic patients, researchers sought to measure the incidence of non-musculoskeletal responses to chiropractic therapy. What they found was that a number of patients experienced systemic benefits from their chiropractic treatments whether or not they mentioned any symptoms in these areas at the onset of care. The most common benefits reported in this study were breathing (27%), digestion (26%) and circulation (21%). NOTE: When you add nutrition, detoxification, exercise, and a proper diet you have an approach that will help most healthcare challenges.

CHIROPRACTIC: What Are Cervicogenic Headaches? Headaches are a very common problem that can have multiple causes ranging from stress to trauma. To make matters worse, there are MANY different types of headaches. One such type is the “cervicogenic headache” (others include migraines, cluster headaches, etc.). The main distinction between the symptoms associated with cervicogenic headaches and those associated with migraine headaches are a lack of nausea, vomiting, aura (a pre-headache warning that a headache is about to strike), light and noise sensitivity, increased tearing with red eyes, one-sided head, neck, shoulder, and/or arm pain, and dizziness. The items listed above are primarily found in migraine headache sufferers. Infrequently, the cervicogenic headache sufferer can present with migraines at the same time and have both presentations making it more challenging to diagnose. The cause of cervicogenic headaches can be obvious such as trauma (sports injury, whiplash, slip and fall), or not so obvious, like poor posture. A forward head posture can increase the relative weight applied to the back of the neck and upper back as much as 2x-4x normal. Last month, we discussed the intimate relationship between the upper two cervical vertebra (C1 & C2) and an anatomical connection to the covering of the spinal cord (the dura) as giving rise to cervicogenic headaches. In summary, the upper three nerves innervate the head and any pressure on those upper nerves can result in a cervicogenic headache. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to examine, identify, and treat these types of potentially debilitating headaches.

IN THE NEWS: Is This the Deadliest Vaccine on the Market? While the cervical cancer rate in the U.S. is 12 per 100,000, by Merck’s own admission, Gardasil may cause 2,300 serious adverse events per 100,000. Many of the more serious side effects of Gardasil vaccination are immune-based inflammatory neurodegenerative disorders, suggesting something is causing the immune system to overreact in a detrimental way, sometimes fatally. One of the leading theories is that the aluminum adjuvant in Gardasil is causing it to be excessively reactive. Data show Gardasil is several times more reactive than any other vaccine on the market. Trial data from Merck shows Gardasil may increase your risk of cervical cancer by 44.6 percent if you have been exposed to HPV strains 16 or 18 prior to vaccination. As of 2018, about 13,240 new cases of cervical cancer will be diagnosed, and about 4,170 will die from it. If you get regular Pap smears, your chance of dying from cervical cancer is 0.00002 percent. These seem like extraordinary risks just to prevent an infection that is cleared by more than 90 percent of people without a problem As noted in a film, the HPV vaccine’s underlying technology was originally developed by National Institutes of Health (NIH) researchers, then sold to Merck and fast-tracked to licensure, despite the fact the vaccine failed to fulfill two of the criteria for fast-tracking. It’s also important to realize that Gardasil was approved after being tested in fewer than 1,200 children under the age of 166 and that bioactive aluminum “controls” are being used in clinical HPV vaccine trials, thereby masking neurological symptoms.

WELLNESS: Tendonitis: Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatments Tendons, which are flexible, tough and fibrous, connect your muscles to your bones. Muscles and tendons work together to exert a pulling force that helps you move properly. Tendonitis is an acute condition that occurs when injury to a tendon causes swelling and pain. It mainly affects your elbows, wrists, fingers, thighs, shoulders, knees and Achilles heels. There are two main tendonitis causes: sudden major injuries and repetitive movements over a time period while doing activities like: Gardening-Raking and shoveling-Carpentry-Cleaning or scrubbing-Painting-Throwing and pitching. Take note of these other factors that can increase a person's tendonitis risk: Age — Adults, especially those over 40 years old, are more injury-prone and have less-flexible and less-elastic tendons. Playing sports — Bowling, running, swimming, tennis, basketball, baseball or golf involve repetitive motions that can affect tendons. Health conditions — People with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, psoriatic arthritis or thyroid disorders, those who experienced unusual reactions to medications, or people with hand or finger infections from cat or dog bites have a higher tendonitis risk. Body structure and posture — Tendonitis risk is higher with poor overall posture. Jobs or profession — Tendonitis is frequently seen in people whose jobs require them to stay in awkward positions, perform repeated actions, reach overhead, vibrate or forcefully exert their body. NOTE: Chiropractic helps.

CHIROPRACTIC: Although doctors of chiropractic treat more than just back pain, many patients initially visit a chiropractor looking for relief from this pervasive condition. In fact, about 31 million Americans experience low back pain at any given time. Interesting Facts about Back Pain Worldwide, back pain is the single leading cause of disability, preventing many people from engaging in work as well as other everyday activities. Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. One-half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year.3Back pain accounts for more than 264 million lost work days in one year—that’s two work days for every full-time worker in the country. Experts estimate that up to 80% of the population will experience back pain at some time in their lives.5Back pain can affect people of all ages, from adolescents to the elderly. Back pain is the third most common reason for visits to the doctor’s office, behind skin disorders and osteoarthritis/joint disorders. Most cases of back pain are mechanical or non-organic—meaning they are not caused by serious conditions, such as inflammatory arthritis, infection, fracture or cancer. Most people with low back pain recover, however, reoccurrence is common and for a small percentage of people, the condition will become chronic and disabling. Worldwide, years lived with a disability caused by low back pain have increased by 54% between 1990 and 2015. Low-back pain costs Americans at least $50 billion in health care costs each year—add in lost wages and decreased productivity and that figure easily rises to more than $100 billion.

IN THE NEWS: The risk of a common cold or flu DROPS with the use of probiotics In a common misconception, many people think of a common cold or flu as nothing more than a ‘nuisance.’ An annoying cough-fest with body aches and chills. In other words, nothing too serious, right? Well, not really. But, that’s not to say we should live in fear of these infections either. The reality is – for immune-compromised people – a bacterial or viral infection can be life-threatening. And, for everyone else, it’s just a clear sign that our immune system is being stressed to the max! Thankfully, although many people remain uneducated about this, research reveals how probiotics can help boost immune function and a resistance to the common cold or flu. Depending on which public health organization you listen to: influenza and pneumonia normally claim between 36,000 to 57,000 lives in the U.S. – each and every year. Although those numbers are somewhat inaccurate – because the true cause of death is usually triggered by other health issues. Conventionally-trained medical authorities continue to push for the administration of flu vaccines. But, natural health experts have consistently expressed their concerns about the neurotoxic metals used as ‘adjuvants’ in the flu vaccine. And, let’s not forget the other 800 pound gorilla in the room – flu shots are highly ineffective. In fact, according to a recent article published in New England Journal of Medicine, last year’s flu vaccine was found to be only 10 percent effective in Australia. In the U.S., it’s not much better. In an article published in Frontiers of Immunology, the authors report that influenza is a leading cause of catastrophic disability in older adults – and can be life-threatening. In a placebo-controlled clinical trial involving 250 participants and published in Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology, researchers tested a cocktail of 5 different strains of probiotic bacteria against the flu. The team found that the mixture drastically reduced the incidence of both colds and influenza, with the placebo group experiencing 16 episodes of flu –as compared to 3 in the probiotic group. In other words, those who didn’t take probiotics were over four times more likely to develop influenza!

WELLNESS: Weightlifting for an Hour a Week Cuts Risk for Stroke and Heart Attack Up to 70 Percent Strength training is foundational for optimal health, especially as you get older. It’s not just about keeping your musculature strong; resistance training also benefits your heart, metabolism, cognition and mental health. Recent research shows less than an hour of strength training per week can reduce your risk for heart attack and stroke anywhere from 40 to 70 percent. These cardiovascular benefits were independent of aerobic exercises such as walking and running; strength training alone will lower your risk of heart attack and stroke, even if you don’t meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic activity. Less than one hour of resistance training per week also lowers your risk of metabolic syndrome by 29 percent and high cholesterol by 32 percent, independently of aerobic exercise. Strength training also benefits your brain. In fact, there’s a strong link between muscle strength — especially leg strength — and cognitive health.

IN THE NEWS: Breast cancer: Tumor growth fueled by bone marrow cells New research, published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine, reveals a novel mechanism that fuels tumor growth in breast cancer and may have a negative impact on a person's outlook. However, the findings might also help scientists develop individually tailored treatments that target breast cancer tumors more precisely. Breast cancer tumors need fibroblast cells from the surrounding breast tissue to grow and spread to other parts of the body. As the scientists note in their study, breast cancer is still "one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in women in the Western world," despite the intense research efforts in the medical community and public awareness campaigns. Indeed, in the United States, breast cancer remains the most common cause of cancer-related death among women of all races and ethnicities. In the case of breast cancer, these fibroblasts help cancer cells proliferate by driving inflammation and helping to form blood vessels that deliver oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood to the growing tumors. Until now, scientists thought that most of these cells came just from the surrounding breast tissue, but the new research by Prof. Erez and her colleagues shows that many of these fibroblasts actually derive from bone marrow cells. Note: fibroblasts help your body make connective tissue which is important for your skin as well as your joints but in response to cytokines (inflammatory chemistry) they can become problematic for breast cancer. Fibroblasts from bone morrow are implicated in this study and I have found toxicity of the bone marrow can affect cell production and cell health. Nutritional therapy can be very effective for these issues.

WELLNESS: KNOW THE NUTRIENTS YOUR KIDS NEED WITH THIS HELPFUL GUIDE We all wonder if our toddler is getting everything they need to grow up strong, healthy and vegan. We’ve decided to put together a little list to help you get a better understanding of the nutrients that your kids need. Some of the important vitamins and minerals that you should be paying attention to with your little 1-3 year old’s. Calcium Your toddler needs to get about 500 mg per day of calcium. No, that doesn’t mean they need to be drinking cow’s milk. If this isn’t met every day, it’s fine. As long as they average out during the week 500 mg/day. This means that if they only get 450 mg today, tomorrow they can get 550 mg and it will average out. Tofu made with calcium sulfate and fortified plant-based milk is a great source of calcium and is generally well-absorbed. We absorb the calcium from turnips, broccoli, kale, and mustard greens very well because they are low in oxalates. Collard greens are also considered to be a good source of calcium. Legumes, nuts, and seeds have moderate amounts of calcium that become more easily absorbable after soaking in water. Vitamin D Vitamin D is made by the body and activated by the sun (UV B rays). However, daily sun exposure is not practicable, possible, or recommended for everyone. Vegan toddlers that get little to no sun exposure should probably be getting 600 UI of vitamin D2 or vegan D3 per day. There are presentations of them that make their administration very easy, even for the most stubborn two-year-olds. Iron From ages 1-3, the nutrients your kids need as toddlers need to be about 7 mg/day. Great sources of non-heme iron include beans and green vegetables. To help your little one absorb more of what they eat, incorporate these iron-rich foods into their diet together with vitamin C. Vitamin C Toddlers need to get about 15 mg of vitamin C. This is very easy to do because fruits and vegetables are so rich in this nutrient. Deficiencies are very rare and scurvy has not been a common ailment since the 1800s. So while this is one of the nutrients your kids need, it’s easy to stay on top of it.

CHIROPRACTIC: Studies show more people are searching for natural solutions for their health. In 1993 the American Medical Association was a survey of health habits of Americans and found that more Americans visited doctors are practiced natural healthcare and doctors practice drug therapy and surgery. There are many reasons for this shift in healthcare. Some people are concerned about the side effects that drugs have, (2000 deaths per week nearly 1 million injuries per year), some people have a sense of body ecology and don't want to put any artificial substances within their body. Some people have discovered drugs mainly cover-up symptoms and never get to the root of your problem, and are more concerned with maximizing their health than just making some symptoms disappear. I'm sure you have seen either a popular magazine or news program on TV, the benefits of different natural healthcare techniques. Chiropractic is the world's largest natural healthcare profession and specializes in finding the root cause of health problems and helping restore patients to better health through natural methods. At Keefe clinic, these are the principles that we specialize in. We promise you that we will not just cover-up your symptoms and allow the underlying condition time to get worse. IN THE NEWS: Flu Vaccine Everyone knows about the flu and the flu vaccine. What people do not know is that flu vaccines are nearly useless in preventing flu, they will cause the flu, and they often result in nervous system damage that can take years for the body to repair. Other nations chuckle at Americans' infatuation with the flu vaccine. The joke would indeed be funny if it weren't for the damaging effects caused by the vaccine. A study published in the October 2008 issue of the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no impact on flu-related hospitalizations or doctor visits during two recent flu seasons. The researchers concluded that “significant influenza vaccine effectiveness could not be demonstrated for any season, age, or setting” examined. A 2008 study published in the Lancet found that influenza vaccination was NOT associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia in older people. This also supports an earlier study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Research published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine also confirms that there has been no decrease in deaths from influenza and pneumonia in the elderly, despite the fact that vaccination coverage among the elderly has increased from 15 percent in 1980 to 65 percent now. In 2007, researchers with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institutes of Health published this conclusion in the Lancet Infectious Diseases: A large-scale, systematic review of 51 studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2006, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in children under 2. The studies involved 260,000 children, age 6 to 23 months. NOTE: to prevent colds and flu’s control humidity, take vitamins A&D and C and get regular adjustments. Based on reports from the governments Vaccine Court the flu vaccine is the deadliest vaccine ever produced.

CHIROPRACTIC: A truly unique and natural approach to health. Chiropractic offers true preventative care by enhancing function. Most healthcare approaches intervene after sickness has developed. Chiropractic is unique in that it can benefit the body before sickness strikes. Your body's intelligence working through the nervous system maintains healthy function. When you develop misalignments that intelligence is compromised allowing for dysfunction to develop. The time between a disruption in the communication channels of the body and symptoms can be months or years off. When you get regular chiropractic care you help the body maintain its regulation and control over every other system and part of the body. This is true preventative care. Some subtle signs other than pain that are warning signs of nerve pressure include: fatigue, irritability, a loss of appetite, altered moods, sleep problems, poor posture, subtle aches and pains. Studies have shown patients who get regular chiropractic care live a much healthier life. You just have one body, take care of it. A study published in the Human Journal of Hypertension showed that a chiropractic adjustment could give people suffering from high blood pressure the same effect as taking certain high blood pressure medications. Studies show that chiropractic care can help reduce pain better than many medications. It can assist in the relief or even the treatment of some health and body issues like sciatica, neck pain, ear infections, scoliosis, lower back pain, headaches, and frozen shoulder syndrome. Show others you care, recommend chiropractic to your family or friends.

IN THE NEWS: Phthalate Exposure Threatens Human Survival Total sperm counts in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand dropped by nearly 60 percent between 1973 and 2013 and there’s no evidence to suggest this downward trend is leveling off. Reduction in sperm production is a warning sign that men’s health is in serious jeopardy, as poor semen quality has been linked to a higher risk for diabetes, heart disease, cancer and early death. Along with sperm, men’s testosterone levels have dropped in recent decades as well, and exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals in utero and beyond appears to be a driving factor. Environmental estrogens such as phthalates have generational effects, which is why males are successively becoming increasingly more sterile with each passing generation. Studies have also linked phthalate exposure during early childhood with delayed puberty in girls, while other research warns that phthalates in makeup and personal care products can trigger early menopause. Phthalates are particularly prevalent in personal care products, which is why women tend to have higher levels in their system than men. Higher levels are also evident in people who regularly eat fast food, as the food is packaged in plastic and/or nonstick wrappers. NOTE: You should consider detoxing once or twice a year. We can check for the need.

WELLNESS: Common Painkiller Is Causing Many Heart Attacks Nearly 25 million American adults suffer from pain on a daily basis, many of whom reach for over-the-counter (OTC) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) drugs to ease their discomfort. Research shows a high risk of heart attack associated with diclofenac, an OTC NSAID researchers strongly recommend become a prescription drug; data revealed ibuprofen and naproxen increased heart attack risk 30 percent greater than taking no drug. Risks associated with NSAIDs include gastrointestinal bleeding, hearing loss, miscarriage and increased risk of bone loss. Consider using several natural strategies to reduce inflammation and pain without associated life-altering side effects, such as ginger, curcumin, astaxanthin and severely limiting sugar and grains. NOTE: Most pain conditions can be controlled through natural healthcare: chiropractic, acupuncture, nutritional therapy and electrotherapy. Don’t risk your life, seek solutions for your health problem.

CHIROPRACTIC: Is It My Low Back Or My Hip? When patients present with low back pain, it is not uncommon for pain to arise from areas other than the low back, such as the hip. There are many tissues in the low back and hip region that are susceptible to injury with have overlapping pain pathways that often make it challenging to isolate the truly injured area. Hip pain can present in many different ways. When considering the anatomy of the low back (lumbar spine) and hip, and the nerves that innervate the hip come from the low back, it’s no wonder that differentiating between the two conditions is often difficult. Complaints may include the inside, outside, front, or back of the thigh, the knee, the buttocks, the sacroiliac joint, or the low back and yet, the hip may truly be the pain generator with any of these presentations. To make diagnosis even more complex, the hip pain patient may present one day with what appears to be sciatic nerve pain (that is, pain shooting down the back of the leg to the knee if mild or to the foot if more severe) but the next visit, with only groin pain. When pain radiates down a leg, the almost automatic impression by both the patient and their healthcare provider is, “…it’s a pinched nerve.” But again, it could be the hip and NOT a pinched nerve that is creating the leg pain pattern. Throwing yet another wrench in the works is the fact that a patient can have more than one condition at the same time. So, they truly MAY simultaneously have BOTH a low back problem AND a hip problem. In fact, its actually unusual to x-ray the low back of a hip pain patient without seeing some low back condition(s) like degenerative disk disease, osteoarthritis (spurs off the vertebrae), or combination of these. So, how do we differentiate between hip vs. low back pain when it is common for both low back and hip pain to often coincide? When we ask the hip pain patient to point to the area of greatest discomfort, they usually point to the front of the hip or groin, and less often to the inner and/or anterior thigh or knee. Non-weight bearing positions like sitting or lying are almost always immediately pain relieving. When there is arthritis in the hip, motion loss is often reported and may include a shorter walking stride and pain usually gets worse the longer these patients are on their feet. Initiating motion often hurts, sometimes even in bed when rolling over. During the chiropractic examination, with the patient lying on the back with the knee and hip both bent 90°, moving the bent knee outwards or inwards will almost always reproduce hip/groin area pain. Pulling on or applying traction to the affected leg usually, “…feels good.” Knee & ankle reflexes and sensation are normal but muscle strength may be weak due to pain. Bending the low back into different positions does not reproduce pain if the pain is only coming from the hip. Though sometimes challenging, doctors of chiropractic are well-trained to be able to differentiate between hip and low back pain and will treat both areas when it is appropriate.

Winter time humidity is a big issue. As the weather turns colder and the heaters start working 24/7 then the indoor air will start drying out.
Studies have shown that dry air has four main effects on the human body:

CLICK PIC
- Breathing dry air is a potential health hazard which can cause such respiratory ailments as asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, and nosebleeds, or general dehydration since body fluids are depleted during respiration.
- Skin moisture evaporation can cause skin irritations and eye itching.
- Irritative effects, such as static electricity which causes mild shocks when metal is touched, are common when the air moisture is low.
- The "apparent temperature" of the air is lower than what the thermometer indicates, and the body "feels" colder.

CLICK PIC
As your body fights the dry air you start to use up your vitamin A stores. This enhances the dry skin and sinus problems as well as weakens your immune system. It is important that you have a humidity gauge in each bedroom and a cool mist humidifier to combat the dry air. I recommend the ultrasonic humidifiers as they put the most water in the air.

Some Of The Physical Effects Of Dry Air
Dry skin, Chapped lips, Clogged sinuses, Itchy skin, Dry throat coughs, Cracked nasal membranes, Increased risk of bacteria infection, Aggravated asthma & allergy symptoms
You may also notice these changes around your home:
- Woodwork and furniture shrinkage
- Hardwood floor separation
- Piano goes out of tune
- Wallpaper peels at the edges
- Drawers loosen
- Moldings gap
- Collectibles shrink, warp and crack
- Static Electricity increases

CLICK PIC
Drier air causes sinuses to dry and crack, making people more susceptible to winter colds and flu viruses. In fact, this change from higher outside relative humidity to lower indoor relative humidity in the winter is a significant contributing factor in the spread of colds and flus. By maintaining the proper level of humidity indoors, you reduce illness in the winter. Studies have shown that the body's immune system will function better when the relative humidity in a home is between 45%-65%.

CLICK PIC
Pneumococcus, staphylococcus, and streptococcus bacteria die up to 20 times faster at a relative humidity between 45% and 55%, than above 70% or below 20%. Dehydration can also cause negative health effects. Symptoms of dehydration include dry skin, chronic joint and muscle pain, raspy throat, sinus and nasal pain, sore eyes, a lack of mental concentration, and a decrease in the body's immune system.

Dry air can cause or irritate sinus problems, but inhaling moisture can help. Simply breathing the steam from a hot shower will ease congestion.

You can also enhance the steam you breathe with sinus-clearing essential oils. Once or twice a day, add five drops of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), or sandalwood (Santalum album) essential oils (or a combination) to a large bowl of steaming-hot water, suggests Sylvia Goldfarb, Ph.D., of Wyncote, Pa., author of Allergy Relief (Avery Penguin Putnam, 2000). Drape a towel over your head and the bowl, and breathe deeply for 10 minutes. You'll feel relief within that time.

To treat acute sinusitis, substitute tea tree oil (Melaleuca alternifolia) and repeat the sinus steam three to four times daily. Tea tree oil's powerful antibacterial properties fight the bacteria that cause many infections," says Karen Barnes, N.D., a naturopath in Burlington, Ontario, and author of Naturopathic First Aid (Quarry Press, 2001). Your symptoms should clear up within a few days.
Quick Fix 2: Flush Your Sinuses
Rinsing your sinuses with saltwater helps them drain mucus. Studies show that this significantly reduced symptoms like pain and inflammation in more than 2/3 of sinusitis sufferers. Heatley says recommending nasal irrigation to her patients cut the number of sinus surgeries she performed in half.

CLICK TO ORDER
To rinse your sinuses, use a neti pot, a small teapot-like device sold at most natural food stores. Combine three parts non-iodized salt and one part baking soda, and add 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture to 1/2 cup of warm water in the pot. This solution matches your body's salinity, and baking soda makes it less irritating to your sinuses.
Lean over a sink and insert the spout of the pot into your left nostril. Tilt your head and the pot to the right and let the solution flow out your right nostril. Exhale forcefully through both nostrils and repeat on the other side. Repeat as needed.
Quick Fix 3: Eat Spicy Food

The zing of certain spices opens clogged sinuses and promotes drainage. As condiments, use hot salsas or chutneys that contain chiles, or sprinkle cayenne pepper on your food, recommends Goldfarb or use wasabi.

IN THE NEWS: What Are Poppy Seeds Good For? The poppy plant (Papaver somniferum) is infamous for numerous reasons; one of them being that it is the source of opium, a highly addictive narcotic. But despite its notoriety, the poppy plant is also the source of one of the most loved pastry ingredients in the world: poppy seeds. They are well-known for adding a crunch to various confections and desserts. Poppy seed oil, which can be used as both a culinary and a medicinal oil, can be extracted from them as well. Being a product of a relatively infamous plant, the health benefits of poppy seeds have been questioned time and time again. People fear that the seeds may cause the same narcotic effects that other poppy products give. However, poppy seeds actually offer impressive nutritional components that can help your body improve or maintain optimal function. The health benefits of poppy seeds include the following: Aids in the prevention of heart disorders. Each serving of poppy seed contains a considerable amount of linoleic acid, an omega-6 fatty acid that offer protection against heart disease.8 However, it should be noted that excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids can still cause detrimental effects on the body. A healthy balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is highly recommended to maintain heart health. Supports bone maintenance and development. Poppy seeds contain both iron and phosphorus, minerals essential for the maintenance of both muscles and bones. Prevents constipation and other digestive problems. Poppy seeds have high amounts of dietary fiber, which aids the digestive system in metabolizing and smoothly processing ingested food, preventing constipation and other digestive problems. Enhances brain function. Calcium, iron and magnesium are minerals needed by the body to regulate brain activity and the development of neurons. They also aid in the production of neurotransmitters. Assists in red blood cell production. The abundance of copper and iron in poppy seeds improves red blood cell formation, which helps in the prevention of anemia and other blood-related conditions. Helps deal with sleeplessness. Taking a teaspoon of poppy seed oil before going to bed has been observed to help ease the symptoms of insomnia by promoting relaxation.

WELLNESS: 4 Times Better Than Beets for Increasing Nitric Oxide and Lowering Blood Pressure is a relative of the cruciferous family, which includes radishes, cauliflower and broccoli. Like other members of this family, it contains a number of medicinal nutrients, including cancer-fighting compounds. It’s an excellent source of fiber, vitamins A, C and K, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium and manganese. Arugula also provides high levels of protein, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, zinc, copper and pantothenic acid (vitamin B5). Arugula contains the highest amounts of nitrates of any vegetable. Your body uses the nitrates in food as raw material to make nitric oxide, which supports healthy blood vessel function, blood pressure and mitochondrial health. Easy to grow, arugula can be grown in your garden to maturity in about 40 days, or harvested after just a week or two of growth, when nutrients are at their peak. Arugula9 is a cool season crop, and can be added to your fall garden plantings. It’s forgiving in that it can tolerate low-fertility soils and frost, and is really easy to care for, although it does best in humus-rich soils with a pH between 6 and 6.8. Seeds germinate best at temperatures between 40 and 55 degrees F. Plant your seeds directly into your garden bed, but avoid planting them in a spot where you just harvested another cabbage family crop.

CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC: EMOTIONAL WELL BEING AND BEATING ADDICTIONS A few years ago, Dr. J.M. Holder researched effects of auricular therapy (a form of acupuncture stimulation to the ear - a technique we have used here at Keefe Clinic since 1980). You may have read about that study in the papers then - it indicated that auricular therapy was the most effective therapy for drug addictions of the 178 government-approved therapies at that time! This study was released in the early 1990's and has started to revolutionize drug addiction programs across the country. Now to his next study: Dr. Holder reasoned that the effects demonstrated in the first study described above dealing with problems with the limbic system could be tied in to the effects that subluxations have on the nervous system. He knew that the limbic system is not just a compartment hidden in the center of the brain, but it also extends down the "dorsal horn" of the spinal column. He decided to test to see what Chiropractic adjustment intervention could do with this particular system of the nervous system. This is what is called the "brain reward cascade” is a scientific model that has the vertebral motor unit as its common denominator which provides an understanding to the neurophysiological mechanism on how the meso-Limbic system expresses a state of well-being. Therefore, a subluxation-free spine is mandatory to express one's greatest potential. At the end of that study, the results were astonishing, even to Dr. Holder. After compiling all the data, he found that the combination of Chiropractic adjustments with counseling therapy approach to addiction and compulsive disorders produced far better results than any other test results for any other government-approved technique now available. His conclusion: for the 180 different addiction disorder techniques that have been tested, Chiropractic now proves to be the most effective, even more effective than the use of auricular therapy found previously so helpful. This means that: Chiropractic care, coupled with proper nutrition, electro-stimulation of points in the ear, and counseling is the best help currently available for individuals who have addictive-compulsive disorders.

No matter how old you are, chances are the #1 way others perceive your age is through the largest organ on your body: skin.
But the extent of showing natural signs of aging is not totally up to fate. In fact, lifestyle factors have a lot of say in the matter.
Stress levels and food choices affect how our genes express themselves. That may sound scary, but it’s actually great news. It means we have significant control over a topic that’s gaining steam in wellness and beauty circles: the accelerated breakdown of collagen.
But first … why is collagen so important when it comes to appearance and skin health? Collagen is actually the most abundant protein in the human body. Seventy percent of skin, hair and nails and nearly 100 percent of connective tissues are collagen. It literally holds you together: from the hairs on your head to every inch of your skin, to your joint comfort and mobility. It even impacts the overall health of your gut including gut integrity.
But here’s the problem...
As we age, our bodies’ natural production of collagen slows dramatically. Over 25? You’re probably losing collagen.
And as collagen levels lower in the body, skin typically starts “looking older,” with less elasticity, vibrancy and hydration. Creaky joints and gut disturbances can also set it. Dropping collagen levels could even mean thinner hair and brittle nails.
Collagen Stats
- The typical woman can expect to lose about 1 to 2 percent of her body’s collagen every year
- This loss typically begins in the mid-30s
- This rate increases as a person hits 40, 50 and beyond
- By the time a woman reaches 40 years old, she will likely have lost 10 to 20 percent of her total collagen
- A woman in her 50s will have significantly less collagen available than she did in her teens, 20s or 30s
- Collagen production in an 80-year-old is up to 75 percent less than someone 30 or younger
This decrease in collagen can result in less mobility, muscle mass, muscle performance and skin health.
But it’s not just the natural aging process robbing us of our collagen … there are other “thieves” hiding out as modern-day hazards...

10 Surprising Collagen Killers
- Poor sleep
- Excess sugar consumption
- Injuries and unhealthy joints
- High cortisol from emotional stress
- Sun overexposure
- Diet low in antioxidants
- Sitting all day and lack of activity
- Poor gut health
- Nutrient shortfalls of vitamin C and zinc
- Free radicals
Thankfully, natural collagen boosters exist.

The Top 5 Collagen Boosters
- (preferably simmered for 48 hours with bones, along with tendons and ligaments for the most collagen)
- Adaptogenic herbs, including Ashwagandha, Holy Basil, Ginseng and Fo-Ti
- Vitamin C-rich foods including kiwi, citrus, camu camu, broccoli, bell peppers and kale.
- Sulfur-rich foods including garlic, onions, egg yolks and cruciferous vegetables
- Antioxidant-rich herbs, spices and foods including turmeric, rosemary, green tea, acai and goji berries
All of the above are great collagen boosters, but I believe none of them compare to the greatest collagen booster in the world: collagen itself that comes from food sources like chicken broth, beef broth, wild fish broth and eggshell membranes.

IN THE NEWS: Dirt Don’t Hurt When it comes to keeping your children healthy, most parents are cautious, if not hypervigilant, over-sterilizing their environments so their children never get dirty and overusing antibacterial soaps. In years past, parents served (and the kids ate) fermented foods containing good bacteria and allowed them to get dirty outside and play with animals on a regular basis, a stark contrast to many kids today. Soil-based organisms (SBOs) may help to stimulate your immune system, reduce inflammation and aid in detoxification. In 2012, the National Institutes of Health's Human Microbiome Project, five years in the making, concluded that humans are essentially superorganisms with microbes that outnumber our own cells 10 to 1. In a fascinating article, The Atlantic reported that some scientists think health care, in response, will begin focusing "less on traditional illnesses and more on treating disorders of the human microbiome" with targeted microbial species and therapeutic foods for gut health. In studies of what is called the hygiene hypothesis, researchers are concluding that organisms like the millions of bacteria, viruses and especially worms that enter the body along with “dirt” spur the development of a healthy immune system. Several continuing studies suggest that worms may help to redirect an immune system that has gone awry and resulted in autoimmune disorders, allergies and asthma. These studies, along with epidemiological observations, seem to explain why immune system disorders like multiple sclerosis, Type 1 diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, asthma and allergies have risen significantly in the United States and other developed countries.

WELLNESS: Study Reveals Previously Unknown Mechanism Behind Acupuncture’s Ability to Reduce Pain Research suggests acupuncture can be an effective treatment for pain. Clear and robust effects have been found in the treatment of back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, osteoarthritis, and headaches. When properly administered to elicit de qi, acupuncture results in the release of nitric oxide (NO) at the acupuncture site, which in turn encourages the release of natural analgesics in your body. Previous research shows acupuncture deactivates certain parts of your brain, thereby altering your experience of pain.I n a 2012 analysis of 29 published studies involving more than 17,900 participants, researchers concluded that acupuncture has a definite effect in reducing chronic pain — more so than standard pain treatment. Real acupuncture also produced slightly better results than using sham needles, which suggests the benefits of needling are due to more than the placebo effect. Acupuncture can be looked at as point stimulation. Different points affect the body in different ways and knowledge of which line of points to stimulate with a given condition is the basis of acupuncture. When stimulation can be done not only with needles but with electrical current, magnets, tiny pellets or tiny, what look like thumbtacks, called press needles that can be worn for several days. Ask if acupuncture can benefit you.

DIET: This Is Why Marathon Runners Get Sick Days After a Race it is commonly believed that some forms of exercise, such as endurance events, suppress your immune system and leave you at risk of infections, like the common cold. However, our latest review of the evidence suggests that this is probably not true. In fact, exercise seems to boost the immune system. The idea that endurance exercise suppresses the immune system stems from research in the 1980s and 1990s. In these studies, competitors of endurance running events, such as the Los Angeles Marathon, were asked if they had symptoms of infections in the days and weeks after the race. Many did, leading to the idea that endurance exercise increases infection risk. An overlooked problem in many of these studies was that symptoms of “infections” were not confirmed in a lab, so it wasn’t known if they were genuine illness symptoms. More recent studies have shown that most symptoms reported after marathons are not real infections. Instead, the symptoms are caused by other factors, such as allergy. Although a strenuous exercise bout itself will not increase the likelihood of catching an infection, other factors might. First, attending any event where there is a large gathering of people increases your chance of infection. Second, public transport, particularly airline travel over long distances, where sleep is disrupted, may also increase your infection risk. Other factors, like eating an inadequate diet, getting cold and wet, and psychological stress, have all been linked to a greater chance of developing infections.

IN THE NEWS: SCIENTISTS DISCOVER NEW 'MICRO-ORGAN' HIDING IN OUR IMMUNE SYSTEM Researchers from Australia’s Garvan Institute of Medical Research identified a structure that “remembers” past infections and vaccinations—and is filled with immune cells of many kinds which respond to pathogens that the body has encountered before. "The [micro-organ] was identified by a sophisticated microscopy technique called intravital two-photon microscopy," Tri Phan, who led the research, told Newsweek. "This allows us to perform three-dimensional imaging in real-time by taking hundreds of ‘slices’ of the lymph node in a live animal in the same way a CAT scan takes hundreds of slices of a patient." "So, this is a structure that's been there all along, but no one's actually seen it yet, because they haven't had the right tools,” Phan said in the statement. “It's a remarkable reminder that there are still mysteries hidden within the body—even though we scientists have been looking at the body's tissues through the microscope for over 300 years.” Note: chiropractic philosophy states that the power that made the body can heal the body. This is just another example of the intelligence in the body that chiropractic releases with the adjustment.

WELLNESS: Is Detoxification Necessary? Everyone is exposed to toxins to a greater or lesser extent, and these chemicals are stored in your body. There are also synergistic effects when exposed to multiple chemicals. The dose of the toxin doesn’t really matter, because a low dose can be just as damaging as a high dose, especially when it comes to endocrine disrupting chemicals. For a detoxification program to be effective, the following three principles must be in place: mobilization, detoxification and excretion. Fasting is a powerful detoxification method as it promotes lipolysis and the mobilization of fat-soluble toxins. To avoid reabsorption, it’s important to take binding agents when fasting and sweat out the toxins, like using an infrared sauna. CHIROPRACTIC: CHIROPRACTIC MONTH every October we celebrate chiropractic month. If you know someone who suffers from some chronic disease or who has injured their spine you need to tell them about chiropractic month. During October if you refer someone to us for care they get a complementary exam and one x-ray to help them attain and maintain good health naturally. If you know someone who suffers from allergies, blood sugar problems, heart disease, skin problems, if they deal with anxiety and depression or sleep disorders chiropractic could help. October is national chiropractic month and we want to help your family and friends enjoy better health. But if you don’t tell them how will they know? People have to live with pain every day because they don’t know about chiropractic. They put their health and body at risk by taking pain pills of any type. Even ibuprofen can cause serious liver and kidney problems if taken chronically. Chiropractic is the most effective approach on the planet to resolve the source of painful conditions. Taking a pain pill does not fix the problem it just covers it up at some risk. As a chiropractic physician I have to find the underlying cause in order to resolve the pain because we don’t just use drugs to cover up symptoms. Under chiropractic care when someone is feeling better is because their body is getting healthier not because were suppressing the symptoms. IN THE NEWS: PESTICIDE INDUSTRY SQUASHES LOCAL RIGHTS The Lincoln County, Oregon, aerial spray ban was passed in May 2017, restricting timber companies from aerial pesticide sprayings in the county. The ban was a major success of Lincoln County Community Rights, a small group of volunteer Oregon locals who took on pesticide giants in a fight for what they believed to be the inalienable right to live in a county without pesticides harming their health. Pesticide trade group CropLife America, which had revenue of more than $16 million in 2015 and whose dues-paying members include Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow and DuPont, stepped in to try to stop the ban. CropLife America teamed up with PR firm Paradigm Communications and created an opposition group called Protect Family Farms and Forests to paint the local residents as eco-terrorists. A lawsuit has already been filed to make the pesticide ban invalid on the grounds that it is pre-empted by Oregon state law. Forty-three states have pesticide pre-emption laws that may restrict local governments from allowing pesticide restrictions that go beyond those required at a federal level, and the industry is trying to push for pre-emption at the federal level.

Chiropractic success story: I cannot tell this story enough. For us, chiropractic has been the answer to a serious problem. We were experiencing severe tantrums with Z., one of our two-and-a-half-year-old twins. The pediatrician said he was normal but at the “extreme end of the behavior scale.” As his mother, I wasn’t satisfied with this answer. I felt Z. was uncomfortable in some way or in some kind of pain, and I was desperately searching for answers. Z.’s tantrums would last up to an hour. They included sobbing, nonsense babbling, throwing and breaking things, and often hurting himself, whether biting himself, pulling his hair, or hitting his own head. He’d throw himself down anywhere, once down a concrete staircase onto a concrete patio, often in the middle of the street, and just lose control. Sometimes he would repeat, “help me, help me, help me.” Almost anything could spark the tantrums, sometimes just a noise or sound he might not like. There could be as many as 5-6 hour-long tantrums a day. The behavior started when Z. was just over a year old and seemed to be getting progressively worse. His communication skills, which had developed early, were also regressing. Instead of exchanging information in a typical toddler conversation, he often simply repeated the question asked or words said to him. He usually preferred to sit alone rather than have someone sit next to him. Fearing that one of us would soon need to be medicated, we started chiropractic care. Under steady chiropractic care, we immediately saw improvement in the degree of the tantrums. They initially continued to occur almost as often, but were not as severe. After five weeks of regular visits, the results are nothing short of miraculous. His communications skills are back to normal for his age. He initiates conversations again, comments reasonably on things, and asks and responds to questions. But perhaps my favorite improvement is the emotional one. He sits with me all the time and will give me all the kisses and hugs I ask for. He says, “I love you, Mommy,” whenever the feeling strikes him. I couldn’t be happier.

IN THE NEWS: Common Acid Reflux Medications Promote Chronic Liver Disease Approximately 10 percent of the general population take a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) drug to block stomach acid secretions and relieve symptoms of frequent heartburn, acid reflux and gastroesophageal reflux disease. That percentage can be as much as seven times higher for people with chronic liver disease. Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have discovered evidence in mice and humans that stomach (gastric) acid suppression alters specific gut bacteria in a way that promotes liver injury and progression of three types of chronic liver disease. The study is published October 10 in Nature Communications. "Our stomachs produce gastric acid to kill ingested microbes, and taking a medication to suppress gastric acid secretion can change the composition of the gut microbiome," said senior author Bernd Schnabl, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "Since we found previously that the gut microbiome — the communities of bacteria and other microbes living there — can influence liver disease risk, we wondered what effect gastric acid suppression might have on the progression of chronic liver disease. We found that the absence of gastric acid promotes growth of Enterococcus bacteria in the intestines and translocation to the liver, where they exacerbate inflammation and worsen chronic liver disease." There are inexpensive and readily available alternatives to PPIs. However, even non-PPI-based antacids (e.g., Pepto-Bismol, Tums, or H2 blockers such as Tagamet and Zantac) still suppress gastric acid to a lesser degree. While these other types of antacids were not tested in this study, Schnabl said any medication that suppresses gastric acid effectively could cause changes in gut bacteria and thus potentially affect the progression of chronic liver disease. Alternatively, non-pharmacological methods for managing heartburn are an option for some patients, including losing weight and reducing intake of alcohol, caffeine, and fatty and spicy foods. An FDA report cautions against high doses or prolonged use of PPIs, because they’ve been shown to increase the risk of infection, bone fractures and dementia. But the danger doesn’t stop there. All acid stopping drugs (not just PPIs) inhibit nutrient absorption, promote bacterial overgrowth, reduce resistance to infection and increase the risk of cancer and other serious diseases.

The Effectiveness of Chiropractic Maintenance Care
The scientific literature is clear that chiropractic adjustments can be beneficial for
acute and
chronic low pain,
sciatica, and other
musculoskeletal conditions. Over 1 million chiropractic adjustments are performed every day around the world and people have benefited and avoided
surgery and
risky medications by seeing chiropractors.
Many people who see chiropractors also do so on a maintenance basis, with the objective of preventing future episodes or exacerbation of their symptoms. Previous research has found that chiropractic can effectively prevent future back pain, but this approach hasn’t been studied extensively.
Now, a Swedish study has given us some new data on the benefits of chiropractic maintenance care.

In this study, the authors started with a group of people who came to see a chiropractor for recurrent or persistent back pain. Of these patients, the researcher took those patients who experienced “definite improvement” from the chiropractic care and entered them into the main part of the study.
These 328 patients were then randomly assigned to two groups. The first group received Maintenance Care (MC): they were put on a chiropractic adjustment schedule that was determined by the chiropractor. The second group was the control group, and their chiropractic care was symptom-guided: the patients would come in for an adjustment when they felt like they needed one. This portion of the study lasted 52 weeks.
The authors describe the philosophy of the two types of care:
“In the MC group, the aim was to schedule patients before substantial pain reoccurred (i.e. controlled by the clinician), while in the control group patients were instructed to call in if and when the pain recurred (patient controlled). If patients in the control group made a new appointment, they were treated at one or several sessions until maximum benefit was reached and were once again instructed to call when in pain. If patients in the MC group experienced a new pain episode prior to the next scheduled visit, they were instructed to call for an earlier appointment and were cared for accordingly until they were ready to be scheduled for preventive visits again. MC visits were scheduled according to the clinicians’ judgement of patient need, but at intervals of no more than three months.”
At the completion of the study, the authors looked at the total number of days of bothersome low back pain in all subjects. The study found:
- The Maintenance Care group had 85.2 days of bothersome pain
- The control group had 98 days of bothersome pain
- The patients in Maintenance Care had a quicker reduction in overall pain
- The MC patients had an average of 6.7 visits over 52 weeks; the control patients had an average of 4.8 visits over 52 weeks
- The only negative side effects experience were local soreness and tiredness.

The authors conclude:
“In patients with recurrent and persistent LBP who responds well to an initial course of manual therapy, MC resulted in a reduction in number of days with bothersome LBP per week, compared with symptom-guided treatment. In total, the MC group had on average 12.8 fewer days with bothersome LBP over 12 months. The effect of the intervention was achieved at the cost of 1.7 additional visits to the chiropractor. For patients with recurrent and persistent LBP who are selected according to evidence-based criteria, MC should be considered.”

Car accidents are most likely the number one cause for chronic disability and/or pain. The August 1999 issue of American Family Physicians, the article notes that 3.5 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. Even minor car accidents can cause changes in the spine that can lead to degenerating joint disease and future pain. Studies indicate that chiropractic care is the best treatment for the vast majority of injuries from a car accident. The main reason that chiropractic patients have less problems in the future and recover better from their present complaints is because of the focus in chiropractic care.

The injuries to the spine will cause slight misalignments in the joints of the neck and back. It's these misalignments that produce the majority of symptoms, not pulled muscles. Chiropractic care and analysis focuses on the detection and correction of spinal subluxations. Subluxation is the term for misalignments that develop in the spine. These misalignments can stay there for years unless they are corrected by chiropractic adjustments. The average patient after a car accident that visit an emergency room usually are only given pain pills and muscle relaxers. This of course allows the misalignments to remain. It's this focus on just the symptoms of the injury that leave a high percent of car accident victims with ongoing disability, pain and degenerating joint disease.

" Whiplash injuries may be present as a result of automobile accidents, even though no physical, radiological or other objective evidence of injury can be found. 46-3
" Usually the onset of symptoms occurs from 12 to 24 hours afterward. Sometimes there may be as much as weeks or even months delay between the automobile accident and the experience of symptoms. 46-5
" Most people just don't expect injuries to occur when the impact velocity has been low and damage to the vehicles has not been great. It is common sense to expect that the severity of the injuries should be in proportion to the severity of the collision. However, whiplash injuries most frequently result from relatively minor automobile accidents without major damage done to the vehicles. 46-6
" Rear-end collisions produce a sudden forceful hyperextension of the neck which is immediately followed by recoil into neck flexion. 46-8
" Probably most of the injuries result from the sudden traumatic snapping of the neck when the acceleration of the head suddenly shifts directions. 46-10

In most cases you're better off in the long-term to break a bone than to damage a joint. When you damage a joint, you primarily damage the connective tissue in the joint which can leave that joint unstable for the rest of your life. When you break a bone, the bone heals stronger than it was before. Connective tissue has a history of poor healing. By bringing that joint back to its proper alignment, you allow the maximum healing to the soft tissue or connective tissue in that joint. And by maintaining that alignment over the long-term, you assure maximum results. Out of 50 or so outcome studies which have been published in the past 40 years. They nearly unanimously presented 30 to 50 percent of whiplash victims are left with some form of residual pain or dysfunction.
Our treatment goals are not only to make you feel better now, but to try to assure that 10 years from now your injuries will not be bothering you.

IN THE NEWS: CDC warns parents not to give children antibiotics to treat the common cold, flu "Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the common cold, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections," read a recent CDC advisory on Facebook. "Taking antibiotics can also have harmful side effects for you or your child." While parents might be tempted to seek out antibiotics during this year's supposedly more severe than usual flu season, taking the bacteria-killing medication will not cure the infection, stop others from catching it, nor make flu victims feel better. In fact, needlessly taking antibiotics will kill healthy bacteria and may lead to harmful side effects that could send a child to the hospital. According to the CDC, antibiotics are the most common cause of emergency hospital visits for children experiencing negative reactions to drugs. In addition, needlessly using antibiotics can make the body more resistant to the medication, making it harder to treat an infection. In total, the CDC estimates that 30 percent of all antibiotics prescribed to patients seeking medical treatment without hospital admission are unnecessary.

WELLNESS: Empathy: Caring for Others Is Good for You Empathy, the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, so to speak, and understand their feelings and point of view, is a character trait that may benefit society and individuals in multiple ways. Empathy training has been found to reduce stress levels among medical students facing intense emotional encounters with patients, for example. While many parents try to instill empathetic qualities in their children, there’s growing research that empathy has deep neurological roots in humans. Empathy has complex neurological underpinnings that control the way our brains help us to care about other people. Humans have “mirror neurons” that react to others’ emotions and reproduce them; a deficit in mirror neuron receptors has been suggested as an explanation for narcissism and neurotic behaviors. Researchers found that empathy was positively associated with treatment adherence, patient satisfaction and reduced dental anxiety, sentiments that seem to be echoed among medical practitioners. Among adolescents, empathy may even go hand in hand with future success, according to licensed professional counselor Ugo Uche: “Teenagers who are empathetic tend to be more purpose driven and they intentionally succeed in their academics not because they are looking to make good grades, but in most subjects their goal is to understand the subject material and to utilize the knowledge as one of their ever-increasing tools …Teenagers who are more empathetic do a much better job in embracing failure, because there is little ego involved in their tasks, and setbacks while disappointing are rarely seen as failures, but rather as a learning experience about an approach that does not work for the task at hand.” Practicing empathy may help you relieve stress, strengthen your relationships and have a more satisfying work life.

VA Study Finds Chiropractic Linked to Lower Opiate Usage
We’re all aware of the serious problem in the US with opiate addiction. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 115 Americans die from opiate overdoses each day (about 43,000 a year), and we spend about $78 billion on the total costs of opiate abuse. Opioid addiction is crippling our economy and many communities.
Many people who become addicted to opiates are first introduced to them by doctors who prescribe them for chronic pain. A recent study in the American Journal of Psychiatry found that 60% of opioid overdoses first used these drugs when given a prescription for chronic, non-cancer pain: 59% of those patients were prescribed painkillers for chronic back pain and 24% were for chronic headache.
In summary: 36% of people who died from opioid overdoses were first given a narcotic because they had back pain.

Chiropractic: Working with the Root Cause of Pain
Chiropractic takes a different approach to pain by working to help the body repair the root cause of the problem rather than simply masking the symptoms, like opiates do. Remember: painkillers don’t repair injuries or damaged tissue; they simply stop the brain from processing pain, leaving the underlying problem. If the problem isn’t treated and the normal function isn’t restored to the body, the pain will return.
Numerous studies have found that chiropractic care is equally (or even more) effective than medical care for a variety of pain conditions, including back pain, sciatica, headache, and scoliosis. And since chiropractors don’t prescribe drugs or perform surgery, patients who get adjustments don’t have to worry about the negative side effects that come with these treatments…including addiction.
Even the American Medical Association has acknowledged that chiropractic adjustments should be a course of treatment before surgery is considered for back pain.
The US Department of Veterans Affairs has also seen the benefits of chiropractic care in the treatment of pain and, over the last few years, dramatically increased the utilization of chiropractic for veterans.

Chiropractic Patients Use Fewer Opiates
Now a new study1 from the VA looked at the relationship between chiropractic care and opioid consumption in returning veterans. In this study, the researchers looked at the health records of 14,000 individuals who had received at least one chiropractic adjustment. The authors found:
- One third of these patients were prescribed an opioid within six months of their chiropractic visit.
- Patients were more likely to be prescribed an opiate if they had moderate to severe pain.
- They were also more likely to receive an opiate if they had PTSD or depression.
- The chiropractic patients, though, had a significantly lower usage of opiates after their chiropractic visits compared to non-chiropractic patients.
The authors write:
“The percentage of veterans receiving opioid prescriptions was lower in each of the three 30-day time frames assessed after the index chiropractic visit than before. Our work did not attempt to assess causation or otherwise explain this observation. Veterans may have been referred to chiropractic care as part of an opioid taper plan, or those who agreed to chiropractic care may have been inherently less likely to seek opioid prescriptions. However, it is also possible that the delivery of chiropractic care may have been a substitute for opioid use in our sample, which raises interesting research, policy, and practice considerations as the VA continues to expand chiropractic services. This is particularly relevant in light of other work that has shown a negative correlation between chiropractic use and opioid use in private sector populations.”

This is not the first study to show that chiropractic patients are less likely to use opiates.
- A 2016 study2 found that in areas where there are more chiropractors per capita, younger, disabled Medicare beneficiaries were less likely to obtain an opioid prescription.
- Another 2018 study3 found that chiropractic patients had a 55% lower chance of using opioids than did medical patients.
It’s clear from our public health crisis that we need healthy, non-addictive solutions to chronic pain in the United States. Many people with pain are prescribed opiates when there are solutions that are just as effective and safer than drugs. According to the literature, it seems that chiropractic can play an important role in helping these patients.

IN THE NEWS: Who's Behind the Claim That Oil Is Pure Poison? A German lecture in which Harvard professor Karen Michels proclaims coconut oil is “pure poison” has been picked up by many English-speaking media outlets. Michels is a proponent of the American Heart Association’s (AHA) advisory against saturated fats such as coconut oil. She also has professional ties to Harvard professor Frank Sacks, who was the lead author of the AHA’s 2017 advisory on saturated fats. The AHA’s Presidential Advisory against saturated fats specifically identifies coconut oil as a harmful fat, even though coconut oil was not included in any of the studies AHA used to support its claims. The low-fat myth was born and grew to take hold in the 1960s and early ‘70s, and it is four studies from these eras that the AHA uses as the justification for their recommendation to avoid saturated fats. Coconut oil supports thyroid function, normalizes insulin and leptin sensitivity, boosts metabolism and provides excellent and readily available fuel for your body in lieu of carbohydrates. NOTE: One of my professors at school told us that we could make any ridiculous claim about diet and he would find one authority that agreed with it and one that disagreed with it. The high complex carb low-fat diet is a proven failure when used on the population as a whole. There is a subgroup of the population that do really well on this diet but the faulty research behind this diet has led to outrageous claims from this Harvard professor. It can take decades for bad science to be eliminated. Don’t be afraid of coconut oil.

WELLNESS: UK Guidelines Recommend Honey for Cough, Not Antibiotics With the goal of reducing inappropriate antibiotic use by half by 2021, the U.K. Department of Health has proposed new guidelines recommending the use of honey as the first line of treatment for coughs. Antibiotics do little to improve colds and flu or symptoms like coughs and sore throat because they are not designed to treat viral infections, which typically run their course within a week or two. The antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of honey are well-known, making honey a great alternative to prescription drugs when treating coughs. I highly recommend Manuka honey, which has a long history of use as a treatment for bacterial infections and wounds, making it a beneficial natural health remedy. Here’s a couple of recipes to try: Mix equal amount of honey and lemongrass juice then drink to reduce the coughs.@@ Mix a syrup consisting of 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger, tablespoon honey, 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar, 2 tablespoons water, mix, and drink.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: FALL ALLERGIES Spring and fall tend to be the worst times of the year for allergies. Some people will suffer year-round particularly if they have a mold or dust allergy. Allergies can be from a mild nuisance, mucus draining down the back of the throat, to a full-blown attack where you have sneezing, congested sinuses, runny eyes, and nose etc. many people who aren’t aware of natural healthcare just suppress their allergies with antihistamines. Most of those people don’t realize antihistamines suppress their immune system. Does that sound like a smart thing to do, suppressing your immune system? I have seen one study that associates chronic antihistamine use with cancer. Think about it for a second if you chronically use antihistamines you’re chronically suppressing your immune system that is essential in keeping you well, particularly in defending against things like cancer. At Keefe Clinic our number one remedy for allergies is our “Allergy Mix” which is a homeopathic dilution of all the antigens commonly found in Tulsa air. Not only do most people noticed immediate symptomatic relief when they start taking the mix, the mix is actually working at correcting the immune system dysfunction that leads to the allergy symptoms in the first place. Note: IN rare cases your allergy symptoms might get worse before they get better. In homeopathy, this is called "proving" indicating that the right selection of remedy. Simply reduce your dose for a period of time as your body adjusts. This is a harmless reaction and extremely rare.

FUNNY BONE: There was an old couple, married for nearly 60 years. It was rumored that they never had a single fight since their marriage. It’s difficult to find such a couple which did not fight and that is what made this fact unbelievable. A man, while traveling through the state, happened to visit their village. While at the bar, he met a local who asked him if he was married, he said, “I’m divorced. Never could find a woman I didn't end up fighting with all the time”. Then the local man told him about the old couple that never fought. He exclaimed, "What?? That's impossible! Everyone has fights!". But the local swore to him it was the truth. He was determined to find out their secret and decided to pay them a visit. When he reached the old couple’s house, he was greeted by the old man and invited for tea. The old man inquired the guest about his purpose of visit. After the traveler explained why he came to see him, the man smiled and nodded. "It's true. We never fight." "PLEASE," begged the traveler, "can you tell me your secret?" "Well," said the old man, "it all started about 60 years ago, right after the wedding. We were riding our mule back to town and walking it down the street when it tripped over a stone and my wife said to him: 'That's one.' "We kept riding and he tripped again on another stone, which made my wife immediately say: 'That's two.' "Two minutes later, the mule trips over a stone again. My wife said: 'That's three.' She pulled out a gun I never knew she had and shot the mule in the head without thinking twice! I was shocked and yelled at her: 'What the heck do you think you're doing? We needed that mule! Are you crazy?!' "My wife looked me straight in the eye and said: 'That's one.' "And we haven't had a fight since."
