IN THE NEWS: Researchers Uncover Link Between Immune Function And Osteoarthritic Pain And Progression The study, published in the medical journal Osteoarthritis and Cartilage, found that monocytes, the white blood cells necessary to regulate immune responses, were more activated and pro-inflammatory in women with osteoarthritis, and that elevated inflammation and body mass index were associated with this increased activation. Chronic inflammation and osteoarthritis has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and depression among adults with OA. While the cause of OA remains unknown, multiple factors contribute to its risk, progression and severity. Today is the day to change your diet because the day you have a heart attack or diagnosed with cancer it could be too late. Junk food is the biggest cause of inflammation in the body. Toxicity, lack of exercise, carbonated beverages, or lifestyles that lead to over acidity our foundation for inflammation in the body. We can check you for inflammation give us a call.

WELLNESS: Foods and activities that can reduce the risk for Alzheimer's disease Foods: Extra-virgin olive oil, coconut oil, most berries, cherries, elderberry, grape or grape seed, pomegranate, strawberry, leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables, rosemary, lemon balm, heperzine A, Panax ginseng, ashwagandha, ginkgo biloba, curcumin, coffee/caffeine, green tea, cinnamon, and dark chocolate. Supplements: alpha lipoic acid, acetyl l-carnitine, vitamin D, C and E, DHA, vinpocetin, Pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ), phosphatidylserine, magnesium, B vitamins (B12 and B6), niacin, co-Q10, N-acetyl cysteine,Luteolin, wild green oat extract,Nicotinamide riboside ,Bacopamonnieri – (Brahmi) , l-lysine (for the herpes virus), glutathione, and SOD (superoxide dismutase). Vega testing is an excellent way to determine which of these products your body might need. Nobody needs all of these. Also non-GMO foods and organic foods would be smart if you're dealing with advanced memory issues. The use of Stevia over artificial sweeteners would be recommended and artificial food coloring and other food additives could be an issue. Eat foods in their natural state. Activities that help: Exercise, learn something new, avoid toxic chemicals, toxic metals, PCBs, deal with stress, deal with depression, avoid processed foods and alcohol, the Mediterranean diet, the ketogenic diet, calories restricted diet, the Paleo diet, In a UCLA study, patients made dramatic lifestyle changes. They avoided simple carbs, gluten and processed foods. They increased their fish intake, took yoga and meditated. They were instructed to take melatonin, get adequate sleep, incorporate vitamin B-12, vitamin D-3 and fish oil. Within six months, nine of the 10 memory-loss patients saw a noticeable improvement in memory. One patient, who was in the late stages of Alzheimer's, did not show improvement. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: LONGEVITY, DNA REPAIR AND CHIROPRACTIC DNA is the molecule of life. It contains our genes which make us what we are. DNA makes up our chromosomes which are held in the nucleus of our cells. DNA is very fragile and susceptible to damage from environmental stresses. It is estimated that our cells experience anywhere from 1,000 to 1,000,000 incidences of DNA damage PER DAY. If this DNA damage is left and not repaired, our DNA sequences cannot be read or will not be read properly. This will result in abnormal cell function or expression. Three things can then occur; senescence, which means the cells stop dividing, cell death and/or tumor growth. All three are not good things as they lead to poor health and premature aging. The good news is that our cells are equipped with numerous enzymes (too many to list) whose job it is to continually repair this DNA damage. This DNA repair can be measured through blood tests that measure serum Thiol levels. The serum Thiol level is an indicator of the level of DNA repair. The higher serum Thiol, the more DNA repair and the better your health and aging. In a landmark study published in the Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, chiropractors collaborating with researchers at the University of Lund found that chiropractic care could influence basic physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair.  These findings offer a scientific explanation for the positive health benefits reported by patients receiving chiropractic care.  Long-term chiropractic care of two or more years was shown to re-establish a normal physiological state independent of age, sex, or nutritional supplementation. Symptom-free or primary wellness subjects under chiropractic care demonstrated higher mean serum thiol levels than patients with active disease, and produced some values that were higher than normal wellness values in non-chiropractic subjects. Wellness care pays big benefits

IN THE NEWS: Chuck Norris Focuses Attention on Heavy Metal Risks After Enhanced MRI Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a study allowing your physician to see detailed images of your organs and tissues using a large magnet and radio waves. Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) may be prescribed to enhance the image but the heavy metal gadolinium is known to deposit in your brain, bone and organs. The FDA acknowledges the metal may be found in your tissues for years but claims there is no known effect, despite the rising number of people suffering from kidney damage, cognitive dysfunction and muscle wasting. Strategies you may consider if an enhanced MRI is absolutely necessary include optimizing your gut and nutrition, eating fermented foods and using a sauna to aid detoxification. After undergoing three MRIs with GBCAs to evaluate her rheumatoid arthritis, Gena O'Kelley, the wife of American film icon Chuck Norris, began experiencing severe physical symptoms that began with a burning sensation in her skin. She described it as if there was acid burning her skin, slowly covering her body.  She reports that she visited the emergency room five or six nights in a row, while doctors ran multiple tests for ALS, MS, cancer and Parkinson's disease. However, it was O'Kelley who made the connection between her burning skin, contracted arm and cognitive issues and the multiple MRIs she had undergone. She told Full Measure: "When we got to the hospital in Houston this last time, and I'm so bad and I said, listen, I am sober enough in my thinking right now, because I had such brain issues going on, I said I'm only going to be able to tell you this one time and I need you to listen to me very closely. I have been poisoned with gadolinium or by gadolinium and we don't have much time to figure out how to get this out of my body or I am going to die." After five months of treatment in China and then in a clinic in Nevada, O'Kelley was able to return home to her seven children for continued treatment by a physician in Houston. Norris shared their tax return records documenting $2 million over three years in uninsured medical expenses to help O'Kelley return to health. Now Norris is suing 11 medical companies for the part they played in not warning the couple and others of the dangers of using a GBCA for MRI contrast.

WELLNESS: Salt and Good Health Salt is essential not only to life, but to good health. The National Academy of Sciences recommends that Americans consume a minimum of 500 mg/day of sodium to maintain good health. Individual needs, however, vary enormously based a person's genetic make-up and their lifestyle. While individual requirements range widely, most Americans have no trouble reaching their minimum requirements. Most consume "excess" sodium above and beyond that required for proper bodily function. The kidneys efficiently process this "excess" sodium in healthy people. Experimental studies show that most humans tolerate a wide range of sodium intakes, from about 250 mg/day to over 30,000 mg/day. The actual range is much narrower. Americans consume about 3,500 mg/day of sodium; men more, women less. Salt has been wrongly demonized as a major contributor to high blood pressure. Factors that play a significantly greater role include your sodium-to-potassium ratio, and a high-sugar, processed food diet. Symptoms of sodium deficiency may include muscle fatigue, spasms, cramps and heart palpitations. Such symptoms may disappear by adding more salt to your diet. In the 1600s, the average person was consuming up to 100 grams of salt per day from salted cod, herring and meats. Today, most people get 10 grams of salt per day or less, yet we have far higher rates of hypertension. Low-sodium diets may lower blood pressure. However, this reduction in blood pressure may not necessarily translate into a reduction in cardiovascular events. In fact, the reduction in blood pressure may actually be harmful by potentially increasing heart rate, as well as the risk of falls and fractures. NOTE: Some people are salt sensitive and should consider a salt substitute. Table salt is considered dead salt as it only contain sodium chloride, Himalayan salt contains around 70 other minerals and is considered much healthier.

CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic care in low-back pain, leg pain, and idiopathic chronic testicular pain: SUBJECT: A 36-year-old male patient had low-back pain, right leg pain, and testicular pain that was worsening. All had been present for 5 years. He had been seen by several medical physicians and had lumbar magnetic resonance imaging and x-rays performed. All were read as normal. Examination revealed tenderness of the testicles bilaterally with no masses or other abnormality of the testicles or scrotum. Orthopedic and neurological testing was unremarkable. Tenderness rated 8 out of 10 was noted at the L4 spinous process. RESULTS:   After 4 weeks, the patient's low-back pain was decreased and his leg pain was gone. The testicular pain was improved after the first treatment and gone after 3 weeks of care. The patient was followed up by telephone at 3 and 6 months after discharge to find out if the testicle pain had returned, which it had not.

IN THE NEWS:. Our body clocks cause wounds sustained at night to heal more slowly November 21, 2017 A new study has discovered how our body clocks cause wounds, such as cuts and burns, to heal approximately 60% faster if the injury happens during the day rather than at night. The study, published in Science Translational Medicine, is the first to show how our internal body clocks regulate wound healing by skin cells and optimize healing during the day. Our body clocks – or circadian rhythm – regulate nearly every cell in the human body, driving 24-hour cycles in many processes such as sleeping, hormone secretion and metabolism. Tests using skin cells – fibroblasts and keratinocytes – and also in mice showed that during the internal body clock’s ‘daytime’, wounds to the skin healed almost twice as efficiently as wounds incurred during the night. The researchers found that this effect was mirrored in humans with burns, by collaborating with clinicians and analyzing the records of 118 patients with burn injuries. The researchers found a key reason for this faster healing was that skin cells moved to the site of the wound to repair it much faster during the body clock’s daytime. “By taking these into account, not only could novel drug targets be identified, but also the effectiveness of established therapies might be increased through changing what time of day they are given.”

WELLNESS: Saccharomyces boulardii, or S. boulardii, is one type of probiotic out there. But there’s one major difference: it's not a type of bacteria. It's a yeast that happens to function like a probiotic in the body. For the past 30 or so years, doctors have recommended it to help patients with diarrhea. It helps to regulate the intestines and protect them from pathogens, including Clostridium difficile (c-diff), and other things that can damage the intestinal lining. It also modulates different parts of your immune system and keeps the intestinal barrier function up and running. Doctors have associated defects in the intestinal barrier function with different gastrointestinal diseases. S. boulardii can also help treat other ailments, such as lactose intolerance, and might even have a future in the treatment of acne, vaginal yeast infections, high cholesterol, fever blisters, and canker sores. It seems to improve the quality of life of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), as well as Crohn's disease. Some striking effects of the probiotic were seen.  Within weeks, obese and type 2 diabetic mice given S. boulardii exhibited reduced fatty liver, a 10% reduction in fat mass and body weight, and a 40 to 50% reduction in inflammatory markers. Furthermore, these improvements correlated with improvements to gastrointestinal tissue and several important changes in gut bacterial balance.  This remarkable study provides new insight into the effects of S. boulardii and further supports the idea that probiotics could help reduce the passage of inflammatory molecules in your gut (known and endotoxin) into you blood, causing inflammation, disrupting your metabolism and damaging your health.

CHIROPRACTIC: Chiropractic Can Help Asthma, COPD and More…A Study Shows Regular Chiropractic Visits Can Help! One study has discovered that another way to keep your lungs breathing easier is with regular chiropractic visits. In September of 2016, the Journal of Physical Therapy Science published a study involving 30 subjects between the ages of 20 and 38 who were not currently being treated for any type of respiratory issue, nor were they experiencing any pain in their thoracic region. One-half were randomly assigned to an experimental group, which is the group that received actual spinal manipulation therapy. The remainders were assigned to the control, receiving sham treatments instead. Findings: These findings suggests that chiropractic care likely plays a more important role in healthy lung function than most people realize. This information may be helpful to patients who are already experiencing chronic respiratory issues and looking for relief, but it may also work to reduce the likelihood of lung-related diseases in the first place. As the COPD Foundation states, generally speaking, “once lung function is gone, it is gone for good.” That’s why they recommend engaging in activities which can maximize lung capacity. These include: getting some type of regular exercise, performing physically demanding exercises during the times when it’s easier to breathe, and staying indoors when extreme temperatures are expected or pollution is high.

DIET: Can you REALLY eat yourself happy? You really are what you eat – and your brain health and mood are no exception. For example: Junk food really can affect our mental health by causing blood sugar highs and lows. This interferes with brain chemicals that affect mood. Protein is vital to make serotonin and dopamine – which are key to our mental health. There are crucial nutrients that our brain requires in tiny amounts that can really affect our mental state. They include B vitamins, iron, calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc and selenium. When you feel tired, do you reach for a sweet snack? And when you're upset, do you find solace in chocolate, ice-cream or a bag of chips? Research confirms that you are more likely to turn to junk food when you're in a bad mood, as their high fat and sugar content activates pleasure centres in the brain, triggering the release of 'feel-good' neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin. But there's a catch. Self-medicating with junk food also leads to blood sugar highs and lows that interfere with how these brain chemicals function to regulate mood. The overall effect can worsen your mental health. NOTE:Eating a variety of whole foods, real foods, supply your brain with the essential nutrients that can help produce a sense of well-being and higher moods. Eating smart is not only good for your well-being but for your families as well.

IN THE NEWS: Poor sleep linked to toxic buildup of Alzheimer’s protein, memory loss Sleep may be a missing piece in the Alzheimer’s disease puzzle. UC Berkeley scientists have found compelling evidence that poor sleep — particularly a deficit of the deep, restorative slumber needed to hit the save button on memories — is a channel through which the beta-amyloid protein believed to trigger Alzheimer’s disease attacks the brain’s long-term memory. “Our findings reveal a new pathway through which Alzheimer’s disease may cause memory decline later in life,” said UC Berkeley neuroscience professor Matthew Walker, senior author of the study published today in the journal Nature Neuroscience. A 2013 University of Rochester study found that the brain cells of mice would shrink during non-rapid-eye-movement (non-REM) sleep to make space for cerebrospinal fluids to wash out toxic metabolites such as beta-amyloid. “Sleep is helping wash away toxic proteins at night, preventing them from building up and from potentially destroying brain cells,” Walker said. “It’s providing a power cleanse for the brain.” NOTE: We have tools to help improve the quality of your sleep.

IN THE NEWS: Study finds overweight teenage girls and young women have a high risk of heart disease An alarming 30 per cent of surveyed women were found to have high blood pressure  - with the same percentage of participants also overweight or obese - according to research undertaken by the Royal Women's Hospital and University of Melbourne. Females as young as 16 recorded high blood pressure, greatly increasing their risk of heart disease or stroke in the future. Dr Subasinghe also said the choices women make in their teens and early 20s are crucial to future health. 'We know obesity has a detrimental impact on the health of our nation but it was quite shocking to see such high levels of blood pressure in this young age group of otherwise healthy women,' she said. 'We also found that high physical activity was strongly associated with a reduced risk of elevated blood pressure, so I would encourage all young women to consider their own lifestyle behaviours and habits today and what changes they could make to improve their heart health for the future.'  Heart disease kills four times more Australian women than breast cancer, according to figures from Heart Research Australia - making it the second biggest killer in the country after dementia. WELLNESS: COLLARD GREENS are a close relative of kale and packed with many of the same nutrients found in all dark leafy greens: vitamins K, A and C, as well as calcium. Collard greens (Brassica oleracea acephala) are considered to be a descendent of loose-leafed wild cabbage found in in many parts of Europe more than 2,000 years ago. Nicknamed collards, these dark leafy greens are part of the cruciferous vegetable family. Some of the close relatives of collards are: Bok choy, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Cabbage, Kale. Because conventional collard crops may be treated with pesticides, you should always buy organic or, better yet, grow your own. Collards are easy to grow and can be harvested twice a year due to their high frost tolerance; some suggest a touch of frost lends collards a sweeter taste. Collard greens possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cancer-fighting and cholesterol-reducing properties, making it a healthy addition to most diets. In general, regularly consuming large amounts of collard greens may not be advisable if you: Have a thyroid problem: Collards contain goitrogens, which have been shown to interfere with iodine absorption when consumed in large amounts. Suffer from oxalate kidney stones: Intake of high-oxalate foods, particularly beet greens, spinach and Swiss chard, and collards to a lesser degree, is thought to be a causative factor in the development of kidney stones. Take anticoagulants (blood thinners) such as warfarin: The high amount of vitamin K found in collards may be concerning because vitamin K plays a major role in blood clotting. "In a recent study, steamed collard greens outshined steamed kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts and cabbage in terms of its ability to bind bile acids in the digestive tract. When this bile-acid binding takes place, it is easier for the bile acids to be excreted from the body. Since bile acids are made from cholesterol, the net impact of this bile-acid binding is a lowering of the body's cholesterol level. It's worth noting that steamed collards show much greater bile-acid binding ability than raw collards." Collards also pack a wealth of cancer-fighting glucosinolates that support healthy detoxification and fight inflammation. Notably, collards are rich in phytonutrients such as di-indolyl-methane and sulforaphane, which have been shown to both inhibit cancer cell growth and kill cancer cells, especially with respect to breast, cervical, colon, prostate and ovarian cancer.

CHIROPRACTIC: IN SEARCH OF NATURAL HEALTH Health is a natural expression of a normally functioning body. In order for an illness to get a foothold the normal function of the body has to be compromised. Chiropractic has discovered factors that can compromise body health which include: altered communication within the body due to misalignments, toxins from the environment and accumulating toxins due to poor body housekeeping, hormone imbalances related to dysfunctions within the body and disruptors from our foods and environment, faulty regulation of stress hormones due to a lack of exercise, rest and relaxation and the lack of proper building blocks due to faulty diet. When we see a patient who suffers from a specific health concern one of our jobs is determined which of the previous issues are in effect. You will notice none of the issues presented included the deficiency of pharmaceutical drugs. There are rare cases where genetics, permanent damage from injuries and other factors would require drugs and surgery as a first approach. In the vast majority of cases the first approach should be the Five Laws of Health: diet, exercise, positive mental and spiritual attitude, rest and relaxation and the removal of communication interference through spinal adjusting. If your nervous system can’t control and coordinate properly then you will never be in good health. But if you’re nervous system doesn’t have the building blocks i.e. nutrients in order to control and coordinate good health and that will be a limiting factor. At Keefe Clinic we try to utilize a holistic approach in order to address the different factors limiting the expression of vibrant health and thus restoring health naturally.

IN THE NEWS:. Itching for no reason? Immune system may be at fault People who suffer itching with no clear cause may have previously unrecognized immune system defects. The findings are reported in The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. “As doctors, we throw things like antihistamines, ointments and lotions at patients who suffer chronic itching, but if there is something profoundly abnormal about the immune system — as it appears there is — then we can’t solve the itching until we address those underlying causes,” said principal investigator Brian S. Kim, MD, an assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Dermatology. The four patients researchers zeroed in on were ages 75 to 90. In blood samples, three of those four had high levels of the protein IgE — an immunoglobulin that is a marker of inflammation. Immunoglobulins are antibodies deployed by the immune system to fight infections. Elevated levels of IgE often are seen in patients with allergies. NOTE: hidden food allergies can be a source of itching for a number of people. It’s possible environmental allergies or allergies to cumulated toxins within the body might also be the source. Through Vega Testing we can eliminate some of these common problems and offer solutions.

In addition to causing bright red blood to appear in your stool, anal fissures may also cause symptoms of anal painand/or itching, as well as pain during bowel movements. Less Common Causes of Blood in the Stool 1. Colon polyps: Colon polyps are growths in the colon that are at risk for developing into cancerous tumors. 2. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD): Both of the two forms of IBD, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn's disease, can cause blood to appear in your stool. However, blood showing up on your stool is more likely to happen with ulcerative colitis. CHIROPRACTIC: Why improving function is better than suppressing symptoms The way that chiropractic is different than any other healthcare approach is because what happens with an adjustment. Most people understand how accidents, lifting too heavy a weight or chronic bad posture can lead to misalignments in the spine. What most people are unaware of is even if these misalignments do not cause pain they put pressure on nerves that regulate and control the body. The neck is one of the most prone areas for misalignments due to the fact you have the smallest vertebra in the whole spine trying to balance the 10 pound ball (the head) at the top. If we're talking about misalignments in the upper neck these irritate nerves and block communication to the head. Even though there can be multiple symptoms from this like: headaches, dizziness, sleep disorders, brain fog, changes in blood pressure and even memory, many times you don't feel the pressure you just experience the symptoms. For instance let's take headaches a lot of people if they do anything just take a pain pill. Unfortunately pain pills are one of the most dangerous types of drugs on the market and can cause extensive damage within the digestive track but also can affect the kidneys and other organs with chronic use. When painkillers work they really don't work. It's true that painkillers can cover the pain from a headache but they can't fix the underlying cause. As pressure in your upper neck builds other health problems can develop. It's a lot like clipping the wire to the engine light instead of fixing what's wrong with the engine. Studies show chiropractic is one of the most effective treatments for headaches on the planet. By removing the pressure on the delicate nerves at the base of the skull most headaches are relieved fairly quickly. More important than symptom relief, as you fix these misalignments you prevent future headaches. Now take this same principle and apply it to the lungs, digestive system, reproductive system, immune system etc. and you understand why chiropractic care is superior than most other approaches. Chiropractic restores health it doesn't just mask the symptoms. With chiropractic adjustments, exercise, diet and nutrition, positive mental and spiritual attitude and rest and relaxation you have the principles that can address most health challenges. Tell someone about chiropractic!

That percentage can be as much as seven times higher for people with chronic liver disease. Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have discovered evidence in mice and humans that stomach (gastric) acid suppression alters specific gut bacteria in a way that promotes liver injury and progression of three types of chronic liver disease. The study is published October 10 in Nature Communications. "Our stomachs produce gastric acid to kill ingested microbes, and taking a medication to suppress gastric acid secretion can change the composition of the gut microbiome," said senior author Bernd Schnabl, MD, associate professor of gastroenterology at UC San Diego School of Medicine. "Since we found previously that the gut microbiome — the communities of bacteria and other microbes living there — can influence liver disease risk, we wondered what effect gastric acid suppression might have on the progression of chronic liver disease. We found that the absence of gastric acid promotes growth of Enterococcus bacteria in the intestines and translocation to the liver, where they exacerbate inflammation and worsen chronic liver disease." There are inexpensive and readily available alternatives to PPIs. However, even non-PPI-based antacids (e.g., Pepto-Bismol, Tums, or H2 blockers such as Tagamet and Zantac) still suppress gastric acid to a lesser degree. While these other types of antacids were not tested in this study, Schnabl said any medication that suppresses gastric acid effectively could cause changes in gut bacteria and thus potentially affect the progression of chronic liver disease. Alternatively, non-pharmacological methods for managing heartburn are an option for some patients, including losing weight and reducing intake of alcohol, caffeine, and fatty and spicy foods. An  FDA report cautions against high doses or prolonged use of PPIs, because they’ve been shown to increase the risk of infection, bone fractures and dementia. But the danger doesn’t stop there. All acid stopping drugs (not just PPIs) inhibit nutrient absorption, promote bacterial overgrowthreduce resistance to infection and increase the risk of cancer and other serious diseases.

IN THE NEWS: Do germs trigger type 1 diabetes? Germs could play a role in the  development of type 1 diabetes by triggering the body’s immune system to destroy the cells that produce insulin, new research suggests. Scientists have previously shown that killer T-cells, a type of white blood cell that normally protects us from germs, play a major part in type 1 diabetes by destroying insulin producing cells, known as beta cells. Unlike type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is prevalent in children and young adults, and is not connected with diet. In previous studies the Cardiff team isolated a killer T-cell from a patient with type 1 diabetes to view the unique interaction which kills the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. “In this new study, we wanted to find out what was causing these T-cells to kill beta cells. We identified part of a bug that turns on killer T-cells so they latch onto beta cells.” The research, published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation, provides a first ever glimpse of how germs might trigger killer T-cells to cause type 1 diabetes, but also points towards a more general mechanism for the cause of other autoimmune diseases. WELLNESS: Apricot seeds, B-17/Laetrile Apricot seeds are similar to other nuts - rich in healthy fats and a source of fiber and iron. There are two types of apricots seeds, or kernels. Sweet apricot seeds are sometimes sold as snacks or for baking, and they contain very little or no amygdalin. Bitter apricot seeds, on the other hand, do contain amygdalin. Laetrile is one of the most popular and effective alternative cancer treatments available. In order to increase the efficiency of Laetrile, it is recommended to follow a strict nutrition diet and also purchase other numerous supplements. Laetrile targets and kills cancerous cells, while repairing the immune system to fend off future possibilities of cancer. B-17 helps boost immunity, relieves pain, lowers high blood pressure, relieves constipation, can help with respiratory disease, has anti-inflammatory properties, protect cells from damage, antimicrobial properties, helps maintain proper pH balance. Recommended usage is 2-3 daily. However well-known authors like Marcus D. Adams claims that you can have up to 24 to 40 kernels a day spread throughout the day. IN THE NEWS: CDC warns parents not to give children antibiotics to treat common cold, flu "Antibiotics are not effective against viral infections like the common cold, flu, most sore throats, bronchitis, and many sinus and ear infections," read a recent CDC advisory on Facebook. "Taking antibiotics can also have harmful side effects for you or your child." While parents might be tempted to seek out antibiotics during this year's supposedly more severe than usual flu season, taking the bacteria-killing medication will not cure the infection, stop others from catching it, nor make flu victims feel better. In fact, needlessly taking antibiotics will kill healthy bacteria and may lead to harmful side effects that could send a child to the hospital. According to the CDC, antibiotics are the most common cause of emergency hospital visits for children experiencing negative reactions to drugs. In addition, needlessly using antibiotics can make the body more resistant to the medication, making it harder to treat an infection. In total, the CDC estimates that 30 percent of all antibiotics prescribed to patients seeking medical treatment without hospital admission are unnecessary.

WELLNESS: Empathy: Caring for Others Is Good for You  Empathy, the ability to put yourself in someone else’s shoes, so to speak, and understand their feelings and point of view, is a character trait that may benefit society and individuals in multiple ways. Empathy training has been found to reduce stress levels among medical students facing intense emotional encounters with patients, for example. While many parents try to instill empathetic qualities in their children, there’s growing research that empathy has deep neurological roots in humans. Empathy has complex neurological underpinnings that control the way our brains help us to care about other people. Humans have “mirror neurons” that react to others’ emotions and reproduce them; a deficit in mirror neuron receptors has been suggested as an explanation for narcissism and neurotic behaviors. Researchers found that empathy was positively associated with treatment adherence, patient satisfaction and reduced dental anxiety, sentiments that seem to be echoed among medical practitioners. Among adolescents, empathy may even go hand in hand with future success, according to licensed professional counselor Ugo Uche: “Teenagers who are empathetic tend to be more purpose driven and they intentionally succeed in their academics not because they are looking to make good grades, but in most subjects their goal is to understand the subject material and to utilize the knowledge as one of their ever-increasing tools …Teenagers who are more empathetic do a much better job in embracing failure, because there is little ego involved in their tasks, and setbacks while disappointing are rarely seen as failures, but rather as a learning experience about an approach that does not work for the task at hand.” Practicing empathy may help you relieve stress, strengthen your relationships and have a more satisfying work life.

WELLNESS: PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY EAT NUTS ARE LESS LIKELY TO BE OVERWEIGHT People who regularly eat nuts are less likely to be overweight or obese, according to a new study. Those who consume the healthy snack were found to have a five per cent lower risk of carrying extra pounds compared to those who didn't. Researchers discovered that participants in their study gained an average of almost five pounds by the end of five years, but those who eat nuts routinely gained less weight. The study's senior investigator even suggested nuts should replace animal fats.  'Eat nuts during your meal,' said Dr Joan Sabaté, the director of the Center for Nutrition, Lifestyle and Disease Prevention at Loma Linda University School of Public Health in California. 'Put them at the center of your plate to replace animal products. They're very satiating. Nuts have also been linked to producing healthy aging benefits in seniors in a previous study by Dr Sabaté.  Nuts that were included in this study were peanuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios, and walnuts. The recent study was published in the European Journal of Nutrition. Walnuts reduce food cravings and promote a feeling of fullness, new research suggests. Eating the healthy snack boosts brain activity in the region associated with control, which suggests people will have more discipline when faced with unhealthy food, a study found. People also report feeling less hungry after consuming walnuts, the research adds.

Have you been told ……

“There is no cure for what you have, no one can help you”.....

Really?

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Many patients have been told this by their medical doctor and yet have gone on to find help through natural healthcare and chiropractic. It's not that the medical doctors were lying to them but what they were really saying is drugs and surgery can't help you. Their language is unfortunate because that traps many people with conditions they live with the rest of their lives. It's also sad that medical doctors are brainwashed in school into believing that if drugs and surgery can't help the patient in front of them, nothing else will.

Chiropractic and natural healthcare approaches the body with completely different eyes. We might do some of the same tests like lab work, MRIs or x-rays and physical exams but we interpret the information completely different in some cases. The focus of drug therapy is to find some chemical that will suppress your symptoms. It's like with type II diabetes where the body is not responding to the insulin it's producing so they use chemicals to force the sugar out through the kidneys. This doesn't help the cells that need sugar for proper metabolism to get the sugar they need it just limits the danger of ever increasing blood sugar levels. The natural approach focuses on nutritional and lifestyle changes that help the cells recognize and respond properly to the insulin.

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

It's been said there are no incurable diseases just some incurable patients. The process of getting well can be complex and difficult in some cases the motivation to make the changes in lifestyle and diet are more than some people are willing to do thus they carry their condition to an early grave. The key in any health problem is breaking the code for that disease and to do that sometimes it's as simple as doing basic blood work and understanding the nutritional components of those findings but in some cases it's more complicated, requiring innovative tools to break the code. That's one reason we use a muscle reflex testing protocol that we call Vega testing. The founder of Vega testing was a German medical doctor/dentist who developed this test that included both the protocol of testing along with a sophisticated Ohm's machine to study the response from the body. Because that machine was both expensive and subject to operator error we decided to use a muscle reflex test to work the protocol, it is more objective and quicker. In Vega testing we monitor muscle reflexes in response to certain diagnostic ampules to help us break the code of the disease, understand the underlying components. We can quickly, in a lot of cases, find the underlying toxicity, emotional component, nutritional imbalance that’s allowing the condition to remain in the body. Your body has an ability to heal itself but that ability can be interfered with because of different blockages. Our goal is to determine what those blockages are and remove them allowing your body what it does best, heal.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

The basic approach that we use at Keefe Clinic includes determining what body type you are so we can establish the right ratio of fats, carbs and proteins for your particular genetic makeup. Along with that diet, detoxification, possibly an anti-inflammatory diet, and neurological balancing and establishing the necessary neurological pathways so the body can regulate itself and in turn heal itself. Targeted nutritional therapy, exercise, stress handling are just some of the techniques that were used to help the body.

IN THE NEWS: A healthy lifestyle builds brain resilience and really WILL keep dementia at bay - even if you're predicted to get it - and here are the tips to follow, reveals largest study of its kind. Alzheimer's disease really can be avoided by following a healthy lifestyle - even if you're predisposed to get it, the largest study of its kind has revealed. Exercising, monitoring blood pressure and watching less TV are the three key factors that will help build brain resilience and keep the disease at bay. Researchers at the University of California in Irvine began the '90+ Study' in 2003. Tests were carried out on the 1,700 participants every six months to monitor their cognitive ability. Post-mortems were conducted upon their death. Astonishingly half of the dementia-free patients had the hallmark brain plaques - which lead to memory loss and dementia - when they died. Meanwhile half of the dementia patients did develop symptoms of memory loss - even without having these build-ups in their brain. Those with a higher level of education were found to have greater protection even if OET scans revealed plaque in the brain typical of Alzheimer's.  Physical activity - or the lack of - was identified as one of the risk factors that has the greatest effect on dementia. Getting high blood pressure under control appears to be important for mental health as well - especially between the ages of 35 and 65. But for those in their nineties, it is believed that high blood pressure could have a protective effect. There's currently no evidence of the efficacy of commercial computer-based brain training exercises. They appear to have only short-term effects and work in connection with the same tasks that are practiced over and over, Professor Kawas said.

The Role of Vitamins and Minerals in Thyroid Disease

We all know that we should eat the right foods in order to obtain all the necessary vitamins to maintain good health. Lack of certain vitamins and minerals can cause thyroid deficiency and if you have thyroid deficiency, the vitamins you are taking in are unable to be processed properly.

Both Stephen Langer in his book Solved: 'The Riddle of Illness' and Dr Ridha Arem in his book 'The Thyroid Solution', tell us that people with thyroid problems should make sure they get enough vitamins, either by eating plenty of the foods containing these vitamins or by supplements. Many people now lead very busy lives and donít have time to eat properly. Many young woman miss meals altogether to lose weight without realising that this can cause problems for your thyroid. Even if you try and eat properly, by the time we purchase, prepare and cook everyday foods, most of the nutrients have disappeared and we believe supplements are essential to maintain a good thyroid. Lack of protein in a vegetarian diet of a thyroid deficient person can also cause problems. One thing doctors donít tend to do now, unless you go to an alternative therapist, is check you for vitamin and mineral deficiencies. You might be surprised to find that you are deficient in quite a few of these vitamins. We are hearing more and more that a lot of us are suffering from pernicious anaemia. Make sure you are checked for this next time you see your doctor.

Vitamin A  (not carotene)

Carotene is a precursor of Vitamin A.  An underactive thyroid gland cannot efficiently convert carotene to usable Vitamin A so however many carrots etc. you eat, it won't help.   Vitamin A must also be accompanied by protein to make it available to the body, so if you are on a low protein diet, you may be deficient in this vitamin.  If you are low on Vitamin A, your ability to produce TSH is limited. This vitamin is required by the body to convert T4 to T3.  If you find that lights are too bright or night driving is a problem, try taking Vitamin A supplements along with more protein and see if it helps.

Vitamin B Complex

All the B vitamins are vital for good thyroid function but they all have a different role to play.

Bl (Thiamine)

This vitamin is drastically needed if you have an overactive thyroid.

B2 (Riboflavin)

The lack of Vitamin B2 suppresses thyroid function in that the thyroid and adrenal glands fail to secrete their hormones

B3 (Niacin)

This is needed to keep all the body's cells (including the endocrine glands) in efficient working order.

B6 (Pyridoxine)

Without this vitamin the thyroid cannot utilise its iodine raw material efficiently to make the hormones.  This vitamin is needed even more by an overactive thyroid.  Muscle weakness is very common in people with an overactive thyroid and in those who are also lacking in B6.

B12

People with an underactive thyroid or people with no thyroid cannot absorb this vitamin.  A serious lack of B12 can cause mental illness, various neurological disorders, neuralgia, neuritis and bursitis. Some doctors believe the "normal range" of B12 is too low and that the normal range should be at least 500 - 1,300pg/ml (rather than 200 - 1,100).

Vitamin C

The thyroid gland needs this vitamin to keep it healthy.  Long standing deficiency causes the thyroid gland to secrete too much hormone.  People with an overactive thyroid need extra Vitamin C as this is actually drained from the tissues in their bodies.

Vitamin D

It has been found that when people with an overactive thyroid take this vitamin, it counteracts the usual rapid excretion of calcium, and osteoporosis can be avoided.

Vitamin E

Again, lack of this vitamin encourages the thyroid gland to secrete too much hormone, as well as too little TSH by the pituitary gland.

A higher intake of this vitamin is often needed by people with an overactive thyroid to counteract the large amounts of the vitamin depleted from the system.

Calcium

Many of us consume too little calcium in the form of dairy products.  This is needed to combat bone loss, especially important in overactive people.  Dr. Arem recommends a supplementation of 1000 milligrams of elemental calcium (calcium carbonate) per day.

Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

Magnesium

Magnesium is required for the conversion of T4 into T3 so this mineral should be supplemented.

Dr. Magovern tells us that some people lose Magnesium at a great rate through urination.  Also it seems that a diet high in refined food and caffeine will encourage magnesium loss.

Selenium

This is a crucial component of the enzyme that converts T4 to T3 in the body.  Without it, T3 cannot be produced in the right amounts, and organs will function as if they were hypothyroid even though blood test levels are normal.

Zinc

Research has shown that both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism result in zinc deficiency.  It also plays a role in the functioning of the immune system. Low zinc levels have been found in obese people.  Zinc is needed to convert T4 into T3, so this mineral is a must.

IN THE NEWS:. WHY DOGS ARE GOOD FOR OUR HEALTH (and Help Us Cope With Life) When we see, touch, hear or talk to our companion animals, beneficial neurohormones are released and that induces a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing and happiness. “The bond between man and dog is something that can really cure a lot of emptiness,” says Stephen Knight of Dallas, Texas. “I'm a recovering addict, six years clean and sober,” Knight tells NBC News BETTER. “I did work in non-profits and social services but went into addiction hard core and ended up homeless, living out of my car, and lost everything in life that matters.” Getting a dog eight months into recovery “changed my life,” Knight says. “There's a lot of voids that you fill with drinking and drugs. Dogs can replace that with their love.” Dogs stay present in the moment. That's important for people in recovery, we try to not worry about the future as much. And dogs don't let their past define them. Another population that sees great benefit from dog companionship is older adults, says Johnson. Yet this is another group that often isn't able to keep their pets at a time they need them most. If an older person is struggling to take care of a pet, “the unfortunate thing that happens is family members say the pet has to go. Sometimes even primary caregivers say that,” Johnson says. “It's inhumane to the animal and the adult. Often the animal is the reason adult gets up in the morning. It may be the only individual they communicate with for days.” Dogs are even starting to pop up in court, of all places. “There's a growing movement to have courthouse dogs,” Knight says, “a specially trained therapy animal to preside and be with children and people who have suffered domestic violence who have to testify. Children undergoing forensic interviews for child abuse, who may be in foster care can benefit from interacting with a service while going through interviews.”

CHIROPRACTIC: TREATING AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES  Lupus, Hashimoto thyroiditis, psoriasis, Sjogren’s syndrome are just a few of the autoimmune processes that affect Americans. Under the right circumstances your immune system can literally attack any cell in your body. A normally functioning immune system identifies self from nonself and goes to work as soon as an invader is identified. Your immune system has specialized cells that can break down and destroy invaders through both chemical warfare and actually eating the offender. Sometimes your immune system gets confused because of trauma, toxic metals, toxic chemicals and in some cases emotional stress. The medical approach is to use powerful and harmful chemicals like steroids to try to suppress the immune systems function. Of course this approach does not cure the disease it just suppresses the symptoms. We offer a natural approach to address the underlying cause for this condition with detoxification, allergy elimination, improved emotional processing and nutritional therapy to balance and build up the immune organs in question. Most patients respond favorably to this approach which includes balancing a diet to your genetic makeup, improving communication between the immune organs and the nervous system through chiropractic adjustments and including the appropriate detoxification and nutrition to enhance normal function. Who do you know who would benefit from chiropractic care?

Health is a choice

Dr. Keefe, Keefe Clinic. Tulsa Chiropractor, pain, natural health care.

Working with patients for over 42 years I’ve learned the importance of proper lifestyle choices. It’s been said there are no incurable diseases just some incurable patients. Outside of rare genetic disorders most people have the inborn ability to live a healthy, pain-free life. But that ability requires making quality life choices. I’m pretty sure most people realize what shape your house would be in you never cleaned it in 20 years. A similar thing is true about your body; if you’re not proactive in taking care of your health then complicated health issues can develop that take time to repair. Unfortunately, in most cases, we are unaware that our bodies are breaking down because we have no obvious symptoms. It’s similar to drinking water, as we age our sense of thirst diminishes and we can be significantly dehydrated and not even know it.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

A lot of times it is just simple things that need to be addressed in order to maintain excellent health. Movement is important, you don’t have to be conditioning for the Olympics to stay in good health even three days a week of walking or other exercise can have a significant benefit. Rest and relaxation including refreshing sleep are crucial on regulating stress hormones that can have a profound effect on your health over time. Positive mental and spiritual attitude have a healing effect on the mind as well as the body, practicing an act of kindness not only helps others in our society but floods your body with important hormones and chemicals that not only give you a sense of well-being but have health promoting benefits. Since the nervous system controls and coordinates everything in the body maintaining a stress free nervous system through regular chiropractic adjustments are crucial. Chiropractic keeps the communication channels open and allows the body to self-regulate and heal. And what you put in your mouth is crucial, it has been said that, “We dig our own graves with a fork.”

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

A treatment for CANDIDA ALBICANS. infection based on a popular home remedy has been shown to be at least as affective as currently prescribed medications. Some recent double-blind study results show the effectiveness of different treatments for "yeast" infection - boric acid powder capsules 92% cure rate.

CANDIDA ALBICANS, the most common cause of vulvovaginitis (infection, itching, and pain of the vulva and vagina) accounts for nearly 20% of outpatient gynecology visits. The currently available medications, which are vaginal creams that many patients find to be costly and unpleasant to use, have only a 60% to 90% effectiveness rate. BORIC ACID POWDER, on the other hand, is inexpensive, well accepted by patients and is non toxic. You can make your own size 0 gelatin capsules with 600 mg. of boric acid powder, and it may cost you only .31 cents to make 14 capsules.

The boric acid treatment for yeast infections has been printed in and told about by the lay press for years. In vitro studies show that its effectiveness comes from its fungistatic properties.

HIGH CURE RATE

At the University of Virginia, a study showed the results of treatment of 500 infected college students with intravaginal capsules containing 600 mg. of boric acid powder. The cure rate was 90%. Another study involved a double-blind comparison of boric acid and nystatin.

When statistically significant results were reached, the study was ended. It was found that 7 to 10 days after treatment 92% (45 of 49) of the patients treated with boric acid were cured, as measured by negative cultures and absent symptoms, as compared with 64% (35 of 55) of those treated with capsules containing 100,000 units of nystatin. At 30 days the cure rate was 76% for boric acid and 78% for nystatin. Symptom relief was attained at an equal rate in both drug groups.

So far nearly 2000 patients have been treated with boric acid powder capsules, given daily for one week then twice a week for three more weeks. Most patients had a little watery discharge during the treatment, but only six patients reported some local irritation.

Preliminary observations of the investigators suggest that a single weekly capsule of boric acid may prevent recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Insert one capsule intravaginally each night for 7 days, then twice a week for three more weeks. Do not eat sweets.

IN THE NEWS: Adipose Tissue May Affect Cancer Development In Multiple Ways Author: Cornelia M. Ulrich, PhD, Senior Director of Population Sciences at the Huntsman Cancer Institute at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Background: "Obesity is increasing dramatically worldwide, and is now also recognized as one of the major risk factors for cancer, with 16 different types of cancer linked to obesity," Ulrich said. "We urgently need to identify the specific mechanisms that link obesity to cancer." Ulrich explained that previous research has shown several ways that fat contributes to carcinogenesis. For example, obesity increases the risk of inflammation, which has long been associated with cancer. Also, obesity is believed to affect cancer cell metabolism and immune clearance, all of which can contribute to the growth and spread of tumors, she said. The relationship between fat and carcinogenesis also depends upon "crosstalk," or the ways cells react when the same signal is shared by more than one signaling pathway in two different cell types, Ulrich explained. Identifying ways to interrupt the crosstalk could help researchers identify new cancer prevention strategies. Ulrich added that the study supports the importance of maintaining a healthy body weight. Because fat exists both under the skin and deeper inside the body, even slender people may have excess fat surrounding internal organs. Healthy diets and exercise that includes strength training to build lean muscle mass can help fight the development of excess fat, she said.

IN THE NEWS: ‘What the Health’ — Where This Vegan PR Film Went Wrong  The documentary, “What the Health,” ignores accumulated evidence against sugar in a misguided effort to promote vegan ideology. According to the film, the focus on sugar as a contributor to obesity, diabetes and ill health has steered people away from the real culprits, which they claim are meat and animal fat. For example, Dr. Neal Barnard, adjunct associate professor of medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and president of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, claims that diabetes is not caused by a high-carb, high-sugar diet. In his view, diabetes is caused by fat buildup caused by a meat-based diet. To treat diabetes, Barnard recommends a low-fat vegetarian diet, free of any and all animal products, without any restrictions on carbohydrates. The sugar industry promotes the myth that saturated fat is to blame for weight gain and ill health, not sugar, along with the thoroughly debunked energy balance theory. Fortunately, some great books have now been written exposing the history and extent of the cover-ups. Two examples are science journalist Gary Taubes' book, "The Case Against Sugar," and Marion Nestle's "Soda Politics: Taking on Big Soda (and Winning)." While a high-vegetable diet is certainly beneficial, the low-fat, unrestricted-carb recommendations are not. Low-carb, high-fat diets have proven superior for controlling insulin resistance, which is the hallmark of obesity and metabolic dysfunction. NOTE: This article points out the fight within nutritional science between the high protein low carb diet and the high complex carb low-fat diet. The truth is both diets are correct for different populations, 60 to 70% of the population should be on a high protein low carbohydrate diet where 30 to 40% of the population need to be on a low fat high complex carb diet. It’s a matter of genetics, we are not all the same. KNOW your body type!

WELLNESS: Are you getting enough fiber? One of the most underserved nutrients today is fiber. Typically missing or very low in packaged and fast foods, fiber intake for most Americans is woefully low. Adults need between 20 to 30 grams of fiber every day for optimal health, but most Americans get only about 15. I believe the ideal is closer to 32 grams. What potential benefits might you expect when you increase the amount of fiber you eat each day? Fiber: Assists in managing your weight by helping you feel full longer Helps promote regularity Helps support your heart health Helps support healthy GI function. Your body needs two different types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber helps slow down your digestion and helps maintain glucose and blood cholesterol levels already in the normal range. Good food sources are nuts, seeds, apples, and blueberries. Insoluble fiber helps propel food through your digestive tract and promotes regularity. Good food sources include dark green leafy vegetables, green beans, celery, carrots, and brown rice. Many whole foods, especially fruits and vegetables, contain both soluble and insoluble fiber, a real nutritional bonus.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

CHIROPRACTIC: How Does Chiropractic Work? Many people seek chiropractic care when their back goes out or their neck tightens up. But how does this form of care actually work? What are the benefits of receiving chiropractic care for nerve dysfunction compared with other healthcare options? Let’s take a look! First, let’s discuss how the nervous system “works.” We have three divisions of the nervous system: the central, peripheral, and autonomic nervous systems. The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord, and it’s essentially the main processing portion of the nervous system. The spinal cord is like a multi-lane highway that brings information to the brain for processing (sensory division) and returns information back to the toes, feet, legs, and upper extremities from which the information originated (motor division). For example, hiking on a mountain trail or simply walking requires constant input to and from the CNS so we can adjust our balance accordingly and not fall. These “sensory-motor pathways” are essential and allow us to complete our daily tasks in an efficient, safe manner as information is constantly bouncing back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) includes a similar sensory/motor “two-way street” system relaying information back and forth from our toes/feet/legs and fingers/hands/arms to the spinal cord (CNS). And if this isn’t complicated enough, we also have “reflexes” that, for example, allow us to QUICKLY pull our hand away from a hot stove to minimize burning our fingers. Reflexes allow the information to “skip” the brain’s processing part so quicker reactions can occur. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) includes the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions that basically “run” our automatic (organ) functions like breathing, heart rate, digestion, hormonal output, and more. There is constant communication between the ANS, PNS, and CNS that allow us to function in a normal, balanced way… unless something disrupts them. There are obvious conditions that interfere with this communication process that include (but are not limited to) diabetes (with neuropathy), frost bitten or burned fingers, peripheral nerve damage from conditions like carpal/cubital tunnel syndromes, thoracic outlet syndrome, and/or pinched nerves in the neck, mid-back, low-back spinal regions, as well as conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Guillain-Barre Syndrome, after a stroke (spinal cord or brain), and after trauma with resulting fractures where nerve, spinal cord, and/or brain damage can occur. These are “obvious” reasons for delayed or blocked neurotransmission. There are many other less obvious injuries or conditions that can result in faulty neuromotor patterns and nerve transmission of which chiropractic services can benefit. The “subluxation complex” is a term some chiropractors use to describe the compromised nerve transmission that may occur if a nerve is compressed or irritated due to faulty bone or joint position along the nerve’s course. Reducing such nerve compression typically allows for a restoration of function. A good illustration of this is a patient who suffers from a herniated disk in the neck with numbness and tingling down the arm to the hand. The goal of treatment (for all healthcare professionals) is to remove the pinch of the nerve. To realize this goal, doctors of chiropractic utilize spinal manipulation and mobilization in addition to other non-surgical, non-drug approaches that may include exercises, nutritional advice, home-care such as a cervical traction unit, and other anti-inflammatory measures (ice, modalities like low level and class IV laser, electric stimulation, pulsed magnetic field, and more). Given the minimal side-effect risks and well-reported benefits, it only makes sense to try chiropractic FIRST and if you’re not satisfied, your doctor will help you find the next level of care.

FUNNY BONE: Ah, marriage. Dr Keefe, Keefe Clinic, Natural Health Care, Tulsa Chiropractor, Diet, Pain,

IN THE NEWS: Painkiller addiction: the plague that is sweeping the US Pain is the number one reason that people visit a doctor. What most people don’t realize is in most cases doctors are at complete loss on how to address the condition that’s causing the pain. If there’s nothing they can cut out or an infection they can treat with antibiotics then pain pills are there primary choice. This lack of proper training is devastating to our country. Simply writing a prescription and not dealing with the root cause is leading to close to 200,000 deaths per year for all types of drugs. The more pain pills handed out, the more cases of addiction; the more cases of addiction, the more illegal street trafficking of the drugs; the more illegal street trafficking, the more snorting and injecting of the crushed pills; the more snorting and injecting, the more overdoses; the more overdoses, the more deaths. The death toll exceeds that caused by heroin and cocaine combined, and in 17 states has become the No 1 cause of injury deaths, surpassing even car crashes. At around the same time, drug companies, led by Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of the leading opioid painkiller OxyContin, embarked on a massive marketing push. In 2001, Purdue Pharma spent $200m promoting OxyContin. Primary care physicians, in particular, were targeted, and their patients induced to try out the drug with 30-day free trial periods. Pharmaceutical companies are not looking out for your best interest. Don’t let pharmaceutical companies make you a drug addict seek solutions for your pain.

WELLNESS: FOODS FOR PAIN Ginger A staple of traditional medicine, this pungent root is probably best known for its anti-nausea, stomach-soothing properties. But ginger can also fight pain, including achy muscles from exercise as well as menstrual cramps. One study found ginger capsules worked as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen at relieving period pain. Blueberries These little juicy gems have lots of phytonutrients that may fight inflammation and lessen pain. If it's not berry season, frozen blueberries can have the same or even more nutrients than fresh. Other fruits with antioxidants and polyphenols, including strawberries and oranges, can have a similar soothing effect. Pumpkin Seeds Pepitas are a terrific source of magnesium, a mineral that may cut the number of migraines you get. It may also help prevent and treat osteoporosis. But despite what you may have heard, it doesn't seem to stop leg cramps at night. For more magnesium, add almonds and cashews, dark green leafy vegetables (like spinach and kale), beans, and lentils to your diet. Salmon Loaded with anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, salmon makes just about all of the "good for you" lists. It's considered heart-healthy and may relieve joint tenderness if you have rheumatoid arthritis. Other varieties of cold-water fish, including tuna, sardines, and mackerel, are good choices, too. Avoid tilapia and catfish, though: Their higher levels of omega-6 fatty acids may promote inflammation. Turmeric The compound in the spice that gives curry its bright orange-yellow color can affect several processes in your body, including inflammation. Studies of people with rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis who took supplements of curcumin found they could walk better and without the side effects of taking drugs. Black pepper can help your body absorb it, so try a blend of the spices, steeped with ginger and honey into a tea. Tart Cherries In one study, runners who drank tart cherry juice starting 7 days before a race and on race day (12 ounces, twice daily) had significantly less muscle pain than a group who swigged a similar-tasting beverage with no natural juice. It could be from the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds in the fruit. Chili Peppers Capsaicin, the stuff that gives chilies their heat, is well known for its painkilling properties in creams and patches. Some early research suggests that eating hot peppers, instead of putting them on your skin, may reduce and prevent inflammation, too. The "burn" also tricks your brain into releasing endorphins, which block pain signals. Mint Peppermint oil relieves the painful cramps, gas, and bloating that are the hallmarks of irritable bowel syndrome. Peppermint tea is a good soother for occasional tummy upset. In early research, Brazilian mint tea (made from the plant Hyptnis crenata) has been as effective as a prescription painkiller.

Dr Keefe, Natural Health care, pain, Tulsa chiropractor,

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Chiropractic and pain  There are different types of pain including chronic pain, nerve pain, psychogenic pain, musculoskeletal pain, abdominal pain, complex regional pain syndrome etc. so pain has to be addressed at the source and so it’s important to understand what’s causing the pain. Is it a chemical imbalance? Is it some type of electrical imbalance within the nervous system or is it due to some other condition that needs to be treated. Chiropractic has a history of resolving pain when other approaches fail and with today’s powerfully addictive pain pills it’s important to seek solution for your pain instead of just treating the symptoms. Pain pills can damage the liver (over 20,000 arthritic’s die every year from liver failure because of pain pills) and kidneys (3500 women a year die from kidney failure taking ibuprofen for their headaches), lungs, stomach and intestines as well as muscles. Chiropractic has multiple tools when it comes to pain. For neck and back pain as well as other joint pain realignment is very effective. Even with joints like elbows, knees, fingers or feet adjustments can be very effective. Next when we get into inflammation nutritional therapy becomes increasingly important. Even your body pH can set you up for pain when you are too acidic that leads to inflammation and pain. Homeopathy, acupuncture, electrotherapy, pulse magnetic therapy are just a few of the tools that we use at Keefe clinic. If you or a friend suffer from pain seek solutions, seek care by a chiropractic physician, you’ll be glad that you did.

IN THE NEWS: Dangers of Smart Meters  Thousands of people complain of health problems developing shortly after receiving a smart meter on their home. In some cases, blood tests confirm suspicions that RF radiation has impacted health. The smart grid promised to enhance energy security and reduce energy usage. In reality, 80 percent of households that have received a smart meter report increases on their utility bill. While largely unknown and rarely discussed, there's evidence to suggest a significant percentage of the diseases we now face is related to electromagnetic interference (EMI), so-called "dirty electricity," and microwave radiation from cellphones, routers, portable phones, smart meters and more. In a nutshell, these kinds of exposures impact your biology, specifically your mitochondrial function, which we've now come to appreciate is at the heart of virtually all chronic disease. The smart grid promised to deliver enhanced energy security, greenhouse gas reductions, improved air quality and increased grid asset utilization. While this sounds good in theory, Levitt points out that there are many technical problems with the smart grid, and with the meters. Hundreds have caught fire. Most are installed by poorly trained employees without electrical degrees. Some have nothing more than a two-week training course under their belt. Money, of course, is part of the equation. According to the film, some $11 billion of taxpayers' monies have gone to fund the smart grid rollout. Estimates suggested building this grid could lead to a 4 percent reduction in energy usage by 2030, but real-world evidence shows smart meters result in no energy savings at all. According to a senior assistant to the attorney general for public utilities in Illinois, Susan Satter, "The report shows zero statistically different result in usage, compared to business as usual." NOTE: there are devices you can use with your cell phone to reduce radiation as well as devices you can wear on your person to help reduce the negative effects of electromagnetic fields. Some people are more sensitive than others.

WELLNESS: What a Hunter-Gatherer Diet Does to the Body If you're not convinced that eating a healthy diet is crucial to your health, and perhaps for reasons that might be a surprise, you may remember the story of an undergraduate student who spent a solid month eating breakfast, lunch and dinner at McDonald's. The rule was that every time someone took his order and asked if he wanted something "super-sized" he had to go for it. Over those few days and weeks, he not only gained weight, his liver was damaged and several other changes took place that prompted his doctor to advise him to go off the diet for the sake of his long-term health. The type of food you eat influences the health of your gut, as bacteria and fungi in your digestive tract make up your microbiome, which can make or break your health and make you more or less prone to disease. "However good your diet and gut health, it is not nearly as good as our ancestors.' Everyone should make the effort to improve their gut health by re-wilding their diet and lifestyle. Being more adventurous in your normal cuisine plus reconnecting with nature and its associated microbial life, may be what we all need." Gut bacteria can ferment soluble fiber in vegetables, legumes and fruits, the byproducts of which help to feed the cells lining your colon to prevent problems associated with leaky gut syndrome. The most important fermentation byproducts are short-chain fatty acids, which help balance your immune system to the point of preventing Crohn's disease and asthma. Besides branching out and bringing more food diversity into your life, introducing more of these high-fiber foods is easy and delicious. The highest fiber foods include split peas, lentils, black and lima beans, artichokes, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, raw berries and avocadoes.

CHIROPRACTIC: Natural healthcare can help you Studies show more people are searching for natural solutions for their health. In 1993 the American Medical Association is a survey of health habits of Americans and found that more Americans visited doctors are practiced natural healthcare and doctors practice drug therapy and surgery. There are many reasons for this shift in healthcare. Some people are concerned about the side effects that drugs have, (2000 deaths per week plus 1 million injuries per year), some people have a sense of body ecology and don't want to put any artificial substances within their body.
