IN THE NEWS: Ask Doctor K: Nasal discharge not automatic call for antibiotics Dear Doctor K: I’ve been under the weather for a few days. This morning I blew my nose and saw greenish mucus, so I called my doctor and requested antibiotics. He refused. Why? Dear reader: Your doctor is correct not to prescribe antibiotics based on the color of your mucus alone. Despite what many people think, you cannot rely on the color or consistency of nasal discharge to distinguish viral from bacterial sinus infections. That’s an important distinction because only bacterial infections respond to antibiotics. NOTE: the number of people who die from superbug infections has been growing every year for the past 20 years. Even if your sinus infection is due to bacteria something as simple as saline solution could kill off bacteria without damaging the good bacteria in your system. If you think you have an infection call KEEFE CLINIC first.

WELLNESS: The Surprising Health Benefits of Unripe Banana, Papaya and Mango Green (unripened) banana, papaya and mango contain higher amounts of digestive-resistant starch than ripe ones, which is important for optimal gut health. Unripe banana is composed of as much as 80 percent starch, most of which is digestive-resistant starch. As the banana ripens, the starch gets converted into sugars. Unripe Langra mango has as much vitamin C as 35 apples or nine lemons, and while ripe and unripe papaya are both rich in antioxidants and fiber, green papaya contains higher amounts of potassium.

NECK PAINN

CHIROPRACTIC: NUMBNESS IN THE ARM AND HAND if you or someone you know suffers from numbness in the arm or hand then you’re most likely dealing with the neck problem. Sometimes you might not have any symptoms in your neck yet the tiny bones in your neck could be pressing on the nerves that go down to your fingertips. Besides nerve pressure a unresolved whiplash can  cause compression on the discs in the neck and as they break down they put pressure on the nerves to the fingers. Realignment of the neck can resolve this condition along with shoulder problems, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome as well as numbness or swelling in the hand. It’s important to understand you can have nerve pressure without pain. If you or someone you know suffers from this condition have them call 918-663-1111.

FUNNY BONE: The photographer was positioning my new husband and me for
our wedding photos when he asked, “Have you ever modeled?” My cheeks instantly turned red. “No, I haven’t,” I said. “But I always thought …” The photographer interrupted me: “I meant him.”@@ My wife, a phlebotomist at the Denver VA hospital, entered a patient’s room to draw blood. Noticing an apple on his nightstand, she
remarked, “An apple a day keeps
the doctor away, right?” “That’s true,” he agreed. “I haven’t seen a doctor in three days.” @@I used to think the brain was the most important organ. Then I thought, look what’s telling me that.@@ You kill vegetarian vampires with a steak to the heart.@@ Why didn’t the lifeguard save the hippie? Because he was too far out man!
