DIET: The perfect breakfast for people with depression Exercise has been described as a “wonder drug” for reducing symptoms, walking in nature reduces negative thoughts, and meditation can have a powerful positive effect. Our brain relies on nutrients to work effectively and studies have found that Omega-3, amino acids, B vitamins, Vitamin D, and minerals like zinc, magnesium and iron help create strong mental health. The Mediterranean diet, with its abundance of olive oil and leafy vegetables, contains many of these nutrients.  Nutritionist Melissa Brunetti, who focuses on the connection between diet and mental health, says that an ideal breakfast for people struggling with depression would be eggs (which include amino acids, Omega-3, Vitamin D, and fatty acids), with sprouted-grain toast and smashed avocado. The fatty acids in eggs are key, she says. Those who crave chocolate can also act on that instinct: Chocolate, like avocado, contains tryptophan.

IN THE NEWS: Environmental Exposures, Autism and Developmental Delays — An Approach From an Integrative Psychiatrist estimated 1 in 50 American children. The number of children with autism has increased by an alarming rate over the last 20 years and will likely continue. A growing number of children also struggle with developmental and speech delays, as well as motor disorders. According to the latest statistics, developmental delays affect 1 out of 6 or 7 children. Environmental exposure are a significant factor that can contribute to the development of ASD and other developmental delays. There are many safe, gentle treatment options, including dietary changes and eliminating toxic exposures. ASK ABOUT A DETOX!

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: DETOX More than 80,000 chemicals are put into American household products, food, and food packaging each year, a majority of which are not tested for safety beforehand. Common domestic sources of chemical exposure include food, personal care and feminine hygiene products, household cleaning agents, and items treated with flame retardants. Healthier alternatives are suggested. Factors such as light, temperature, and EMF emissions can also hamper your healthy lifestyle efforts by affecting your circadian rhythm, hampering sleep, and/or disrupting your biological functioning. Just another good reason to detoxify on a regular basis.

FUNNY BONE:  It is so cold outside I saw a politician with his hands in his own pockets.@@ You know you’re getting old when you stop to tie your shoelaces and wonder what else you could do while you’re down there. -George Burns@@ “Wouldn’t exercise be more fun if calories screamed while you burned them?“@@ First the doctor told me the good news: I was going to have a disease named after me.@@ Politics: “Poli” a Latin word meaning “many”; and "tics" meaning “bloodsucking creatures”.@@ “My legs are so sore from the gym that I almost couldn’t walk to the donut shop.”
