IN THE NEWS Exercise may lead to healthier gut bacteria By Cari Nierenberg Published June 10,2014 Exercise is good for the heart, lungs and mind, and now we can add gut bacteria to the list, a new study from Ireland suggests. Researchers looked at professional rugby players and found that these elite athletes had a more diverse collection of bacteria in their digestive systems than other healthy men, who were not athletes, but were of similar age and body size. "The most important aspect of our study is that it draws attention to the possibility that exercise may have a beneficial effect on the microbiota colonizing the human body, and it is associated with a more diverse microbiota," said study researcher Dr. Fergus Shanahan, a gastroenterologist and professor of medicine at University College Cork in Ireland.

WELLNESS: Dysfunctional Breathing Are you getting enough oxygen into your body? You might be surprised at the answer to this question, because most people don’t. Breathing dysfunction is an extremely common problem, often associated with anxiety, chronic fatigue and persistent muscle pain. Along with heightened arousal/anxiety, cerebral oxygen lack, there is also a tendency for oxygen in the bloodstream to become more tightly bound to its hemoglobin carrier molecule, leading to decreased oxygenation of tissues and easier fatigability. Inadequate oxygenation and retention of acid wastes in overused muscles takes place, and these become even more painful and stiff. The muscles being overused in the inappropriate breathing pattern are mainly postural stabilizing muscles, which will, with the repetitive stress involved in the over breathing become short, tight and painful and will develop trigger points.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: NUMBNESS AND TINGLING One of the most common causes for this is misalignments in the spine. When vertebra become misaligned nerves can get compromised and numbness and tingling is a common symptom. Other spinal conditions could include disc problems or spurring so an appropriate workup is important. In some cases there to be certain nutritional deficiencies, like B vitamins or blood sugar disorders like type II diabetes. We can determine this through blood testing or Vega testing. If you or someone you know who suffers from numbness and tingling call us for a checkup.

FUNNY BONE : Apprentice Blacksmith The village blacksmith finally found an apprentice willing to work hard for long hours. The blacksmith immediately began his instructions to the lad, "When I take the shoe out of the fire, I'll lay it on the anvil; and when I nod my head, you hit it with this hammer." The apprentice did just as he told.

Now he's the village blacksmith.
