IN THE NEWS: Tattoos can cause serious adverse reactions, study finds Getting inked may have long-term consequences beyond just having to live with your ex-girlfriend's name on your bicep for decades. About 1 in 10 people who get tattoos experiences problems with the tattoo, including infection, itching, swelling and redness, according to a small study in the June issue of the journal Contact Dermatitis. Many people in the study had complications that lingered for years after the tattoo was inked, the researchers said. Although tattoo artists and parlors are strictly regulated in order to limit infection and disease transmission risk, few people know what is in the tattoo ink itself. "Tattoo inks aren't very closely regulated in the United States," Leger told Live Science. "There have been case reports of tattoo removal in certain kinds of ways that can cause anaphylactic reactions," Leger said, referring to the deadly allergic reaction that involves the closing of the throat and a dangerous drop in blood pressure.

WELLNESS: The Dark Side of Oxygen   Without oxygen, the average person would live for no more than 3 minutes.  It's the very life force that gives us breath and fuels our limbs.  However, oxygen has a dark side.  When oxygen is processed for fuel in mitochondria—the energy warehouse of the cells—it generates free radicals, or charged oxygen molecules.  These free radicals are inherently dangerous.  They are "imbalanced" with an unpaired electron... and they scavenge your cells looking for an electron to partner up with.  They steal electrons from healthy cells, turning these once healthy cells into more free radicals.  It's called oxidative stress, and the only way to shield your body from its ravaging effects is to make sure you've got a stockpile of antioxidants protecting you. You see, antioxidants turn free radicals into harmless molecules by offering up one of their own electrons.  But, without an abundant supply of antioxidants available to neutralize these free radicals, the scavengers will go on to destroy the cell wall, vessel wall, proteins, fats, and even the DNA of the cell. Antioxidants, like vitamin C, vitamin E, and heart-healthy CoQ10, can protect you.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Growing older: NEWSFLASH this is not a condition of ill health this is a condition of time. From what I hear from my patients who might be dealing with arthritis, heart disease, memory loss or other signs of failing health, they are told by their medical doctors it is just due to your age. When did aging equal disease? Dysfunction plus time equals disease but as we’re seeing more and more today what used to be called "old men diseases" are showing up in teenagers and young adults. If you stay healthy and work at maintaining your structure with chiropractic, your chemistry through proper diet and nutritional therapy and exercise balance with rest and relaxation and physical activity you can be well into your 80s and not be fighting a bunch of chronic diseases. Age does not equal disease, dysfunction, untreated injuries, lousy diet, poor stress handling plus time equals disease. We can help you stay well, health is your most important asset, guard it well.

FUNNY BONE: Mr. Kramer had a leak in the roof over his dining room, so he called a repairman to take a look at it. "When did you first notice the leak?" the repairman inquired. Mr. Kramer scowled. "Last night, when it took me two hours to finish my soup!"
