IN THE NEWS: Big Pharma = Big Bias By Anthony Rosner, PhD, LLD [Hon.], LLC, Big Pharma [the pharmaceutical industry] is indeed big- Basically, a cornucopia of evidence suggests that, at best, the pharmaceutical industry has tweaked the research agenda and dissemination protocol in its favor, regardless of the science. At worst, there are examples in which Big Pharma has actually fudged results. Indeed, even the medical journals have either raised alarm or fallen under industry’s influence more than one might have reckoned at the outset. Consider a few choice quotes from the medical journal editors themselves: Marcia Angell, former editor of The New England Journal of Medicine: The pharmaceutical industry has become “primarily a marketing machine,” co-opting “every institution that might stand in the way. “Jerry Kassirer, also a former editor of NEJM, pointed out that the “moral compass of many physicians has been deflected by the pharmaceutical industry. “Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet, wrote in March 2004 that “journals have devolved into information laundering operations for the pharmaceutical industry.” Buyer beware http://www.toyourhealth.com/mpacms/tyh/article.php?id=2117
WELLNESS/PREVENTION: Probiotics may help relieve seasonal allergies Researchers analyzed the results from more than 20 previous studies and found that hay fever sufferers may get some benefits from using probiotics, improving their symptoms and quality of life. In the new study, published online in April in the journal International Forum of Allergy & Rhinology, researchers reviewed data from 23 randomized trials and more than 1,900 people. Six of 23 studies found probiotics had no benefit to people with hay fever, the researchers said. Note: your gut is your second immune system AND the type and amount of probiotics differ for each individual that’s why six of these studies showed no benefit.
CONDITION OF THE WEEK: SPORTS PERFORMANCE Jordan Spieth didn’t just capture the hearts of golf enthusiasts worldwide with his record-setting, wire at the 79th Masters Tournament last month; the 21-year-old prodigy also revealed how important his doctor of chiropractic is to his success, giving him kudos during the traditional Green Jacket Ceremony following the event. In his speech, Spieth made sure to thank the team “that allow my on-course efforts to come out”: his instructor, his trainer – and his chiropractor, Dr. Troy Van Biezen. “They are the best at what they do and I put full trust in them,” Spieth said.
