LESS SLEEP MAY MAKE WEIGHT GAIN EASIER—EVEN WITHOUT EXTREME SLEEP DEPRIVATION

Consistently losing a little sleep may affect body weight faster than many people realize.

Columbia University researchers studied 95 adults who already had an elevated risk of cardiovascular or metabolic disease. During one six-week period, participants maintained adequate sleep. During another six-week period, they shortened their sleep by delaying bedtime.

The reduction averaged about 78 minutes per night—less than the dramatic sleep deprivation commonly studied in laboratories.

WHAT THE STUDY FOUND

During the shortened-sleep period, participants experienced average increases of:

• 0.45 kilograms, or approximately 1 pound, in body weight  

• 0.52 centimeters in waist circumference  

• 0.56 liters in whole-body volume  

• About 17 additional minutes of sedentary time per day

Moderate and vigorous physical activity did not change significantly. Researchers also did not detect a meaningful change in the proportion of body fat or lean mass during the relatively brief study period.

WHY MIGHT SHORT SLEEP AFFECT WEIGHT?

Sleep participates in the regulation of appetite, glucose metabolism, hormones, energy, physical activity and food choices.

The researchers found higher leptin levels during sleep restriction, but they did not measure participants’ food intake. Therefore, the study cannot establish whether the additional weight resulted from eating more, moving less, fluid changes or a combination of factors.

The finding that participants became more sedentary is clinically important. People who are tired may maintain their planned exercise sessions while moving less during the remainder of the day.

WHAT THIS STUDY DOES—AND DOES NOT—PROVE

This was an intervention study rather than a simple observational survey, strengthening the evidence that sustained sleep restriction can influence weight-related measurements.

However, the study was relatively small and lasted only six weeks. It does not prove that every person who loses 80 minutes of sleep will gain exactly 1 pound. It also does not show how much of the observed weight change would become body fat if the sleep pattern continued for months or years.

PRACTICAL SLEEP STEPS

• Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep on most nights.

• Maintain a reasonably consistent bedtime and waking time.

• Reduce bright screens and stimulating activities before bed.

• Avoid heavy late-night meals when they interfere with sleep.

• Use a cool, dark and quiet sleeping environment.

• Discuss persistent snoring, breathing pauses, insomnia or excessive daytime sleepiness with a qualified healthcare professional.

Nutrition and Sleep Support

Better sleep is supported by consistent daily habits, including nutrition.

Food-first considerations may include:

  • Eat adequate protein throughout the day to support blood-sugar stability and satiety.
  • Emphasize vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds.
  • Include omega-3-rich foods such as wild fish, flaxseed, chia seeds, and walnuts.
  • Avoid large meals, excess alcohol, and heavy sugary foods close to bedtime.
  • Limit caffeine later in the day, especially when sleep is already shortened.
  • Maintain adequate hydration during the day while reducing excessive fluids immediately before bed.
