IN THE NEWS: Exposure to violence hinders short-term memory, cognitive control Being exposed to and actively remembering violent episodes—even those that happened up to a decade before—hinders short-term memory and cognitive control, according to a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). The study, which was co-authored by Princeton University's Pietro Ortoleva, examined more than 500 civilians in Colombia, a country that has experienced both urban violence and rural warfare within the past two decades. The findings demonstrate the long-lasting effects of violence on cognition and memory recall and highlight the need for policies that provide proper therapy for those coping with violence. "Memory and cognitive control impact how people do in school, how they perform at work and if they can keep their jobs, and how they fare in life in general, which all has significant impacts on the economy as a whole," said Ortoleva, a professor of economics and public affairs at Princeton's Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs. "Our results demonstrate that exposure to violence can have effects on cognitive functions," said Ortoleva. "Besides the obvious negative effects on the physical and psychological well-being, this may lead to vicious cycles: both poverty and violence hinder the ability to develop for a person or a group, which in turn may generate further poverty and violence. Emotional freedom technique is something that we use in our office to help the mind process emotional injury. If you feel that you are dealing with issues like this asked Dr. Keefe on your next visit for an evaluation.

WELLNESS: Heartburn Drugs Increase Mortality Proton pump inhibitors are commonly used to treat heartburn, but have been shown to do far more harm than good, raising your risk of kidney disease, dementia, heart attacks and premature death. Research clearly shows PPIs are outrageously overprescribed and misused, and do far more harm than good. There are many alternative treatment strategies that can help ease this painful problem without the serious side effects associated with PPIs, which include kidney disease, pneumonia, osteoporosis, hip fractures, dementia and an increased risk for heart disease, heart attacks and premature death. Most acid reflux cases are related to insufficient amounts of stomach acid, food allergies, Helicobacter pylori imbalance and/or hiatal hernia. Gallbladder disease can also be mistaken for heartburn. The long-term answer to heartburn and acid indigestion is to restore your natural gastric balance and function. The most important step is to eat real food, as processed foods and sugars are a surefire way to exacerbate acid reflux. Reseeding your gut with beneficial bacteria, either from traditionally fermented foods or a high-quality probiotic supplement, is also important. Aside from that, there are a number of natural substances that can help address the root of the problem. To address heartburn, eat unprocessed food and fermented foods, and take supplemental digestive enzymes. Foods such as papaya, pineapple and ginger can also help, as well as a number of other supplements.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Phantom organ symptoms A lot of people have heard of phantom limb syndrome where patients who have lost an arm or leg can still feel that appendage. The reason for that is the place in the brain where that limb is controlled and coordinated is still there even though the limb is gone. In a lot of cases the trauma that caused the limb to be lost produced subluxations that press on the nerves that used to go down the arm or leg. Another phantom pain is when an organ has been removed like a gallbladder or spleen from an accident. These patients can still suffer symptoms even though they no longer have the organ. Both chiropractic adjustments and even nutritional therapy can help these annoying complaints, they can be resolved in a high percentage of the cases. Chiropractic care and nutritional therapy should be your 1st choice of treatment. Chiropractic 1st, drug 2nd, surgery last.

He was advised that a small plane would be waiting to fly him over the fire. The photographer arrived at the airstrip just an hour before sundown. Sure enough, a small Cessna airplane was waiting. "Fly over the north side of the fire," said the photographer, "and make several low-level passes." "Why?" asked the nervous pilot. "Because I'm going to take pictures!" yelled the photographer. IN THE NEWS: Oxygen and hyperbaric oxygen therapy reverses brain damage in drowned toddler Medical researchers report the case of the reversal of brain volume loss in a 2-year-old drowning victim unresponsive to all stimuli treated with normobaric oxygen (oxygen at sea level) and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The patient and family then traveled to New Orleans where 78 days post-drowning, Dr. Harch began treating her with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. She "dove" in a hyperbaric chamber for 45 minutes a day, five days a week for 40 sessions. At the beginning of each session, the patient showed visually apparent and/or physical examination-documented neurological improvement. After 10 HBOT sessions, the patient's mother reported that her daughter was "near normal" except for gross motor function, and physical therapy was re-instituted. After 39 HBOT sessions, the patient exhibited assisted gait, speech level greater than pre-drowning, near normal motor function, normal cognition, improvement on nearly all neurological exam abnormalities, discontinuance of all medications, as well as residual emotional, gait and temperament deficits. Gait improvement was documented immediately upon returning home. An MRI at 27 days following HBOT session 40 and 162 days post-drowning demonstrated mild residual injury and near-complete reversal of cortical and white matter atrophy.

WELLNESS: MUSIC THERAPY CLINIC at ORU The Music Therapy program at Oral Roberts University is built upon an integrated music therapy clinical program of Cognitive-Behavioral Music Therapy and Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT). The integrated program develops clinical knowledge and treatment based on analysis of individuals’ cognitive, speech & language, social/emotional (psychological), and physical behaviors, and prepares music therapy students to utilize scientific evidence regarding human perception and the production of music to treat disorders of the human nervous system. The Music Therapy program is dedicated to providing quality music therapy services to the local community through the operation of a professional Music Therapy Clinic. This clinic will allow students to gain professional experience evaluating and treating patients, while being supervised by three board-certified music therapists, Dr. Hayoung Lim, Dr. Hyun-Jung Lee, and Jacqueline Cox. In every music therapy treatment, music is used as a tool to reach nonmusical goals, whether physical, cognitive, emotional, social or spiritual. The techniques used during sessions are based on research and extended collegiate study. Among many possible goals addressed by music therapists might be: Increasing memory recall Improving motor coordination Increasing attention to task Improving steadiness of gait Improving speech and communication Increasing reality-based thinking Decreasing anxiety Decreasing pain Adjusting mood Developing bonds among family members Increasing coping skills

CHIROPRACTIC: Achy joints, migraines and stomach cramps? Ditch the painkillers and learn how to EAT your pain away 1. GET YOUR FIVE-A-DAY It is one health message that no-one can claim to be unaware of - eating five pieces of fresh fruit or vegetables each day is beneficial to a person's general health and wellbeing. However, a specific benefit of eating a rainbow of colours, is that it can also help to get rid of pain 2. THE 'F'-WORD Fats in our diet are metabolised in the body and turned into 'local hormones', known as prostaglandins. 'There is evidence that the omega-3 fatty acids reduce it. In contrast, omega-6 fatty acids are linked to increasing inflammation. 3. BUILDING BLOCKS Protein is essential for repair and healing in the body, but high levels of protein from meats may actually have the opposite effect. 4. SPICE IT UP! Include plenty of gentle spices in your meals. The spices turmeric, cayenne and ginger are known to have an anti-inflammatory action in the body. 5. HOLD ON TO YOUR WATER BOTTLE Water transports nutrients to where they are needed in the body and removes toxins, waste products and dead cells, which are produced in higher quantities when there is inflammation. REASONS TO DRINK FILTERED WATER More than half of the chemicals found in U.S. drinking water are unregulated, and many of the legal limits may be too lenient for safety. Firefighting foam used on military bases and other fire testing sites has contaminated many water tables across the U.S. with PFCs — chemicals linked to thyroid disease and cancer. Agricultural runoff, prescription drugs flushed down the sewer and aging water pipes is other significant sources of water pollution. Chlorine and fluorine are just some of the chemicals that can damage arteries and led to heart disease. Ask us about a filtration system. 6. SAY 'NO' TO... The Study: Decreased Vertebral Artery Hemodynamics in Patients with Loss of Cervical Lordosis
The Facts:
- According to the authors, the natural cervical lordosis is considered to be ideal.
- Loss of this lordosis "leads to disrupted biomechanics."
- The authors speculated that loss of the cervical lordosis could affect the vertebral arteries.
- There were 30 patients and 30 controls.
- The authors evaluated the cervical lordosis on lateral cervical radiographs.
- They used the posterior tangent method to measure the lordosis.
- They used doppler ultrasonographic examinations of the vertebral arteries.
- The authors concluded that, "The present study revealed a significant association between loss of cervical lordosis and decreased vertebral artery hemodynamics, including diameter, flow volume, and peak systolic velocity. Further studies are required to confirm these findings and to investigate their possible clinical implications." (emphasis ours)
Take Home:

The Study: The influence of pelvic adjustment on the posture of female university students
The Facts:
- The authors noted that asymmetry in posture is associated with degenerative changes in the spine, hip, knee and ankle.
- The subjects were a group of female university students who did not suffer from pain in the pelvis.
- The subject's postures were evaluated.
- They used 30 subjects and they were divided into two groups.
- One group received an adjustment and the other group which they called the control did a session of stretching.
- The adjustment was a prone adjustment "in keeping with Gonstead's theory" and it appears from the paper that a single adjustment session consisting of an adjustment to the posterior inferior innominate and an adjustment to the anterior superior innominate was performed on the subjects that were in the adjustment group.
- It also appears that the stretching group did one session of stretching.
- "The adjustment group obtained significant results in TIM (Trunk imbalance), PPO (Pelvic Position), PTO (Pelvic Torsion) and PSA (Position of Scapulae) while the control group obtained no significant results for any items." Parentheses ours.

IN THE NEWS: Antibiotics, childbirth, and maternal and infant mortality Maternal and infant mortality is not confined to the past, much less to fiction. More than 30,000 women and 400,000 newborns die each year from infections around the time of birth. Most of these deaths occur in low-income countries, and the situation will only worsen as the antibiotics available for treating infections become less effective, owing to the emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. According to current estimates, more than 200,000 newborns die each year from infections that do not respond to available drugs. And studies using data from larger hospitals – where microbes are more likely to develop antibiotic resistance – estimate that about 40% of infections in newborns resist standard treatments.

WELLNESS: Foods That Promote Muscle Growth and Definition A number of foods can be helpful when trying to improve muscle growth and definition. Incorporating these foods into your meals on a regular basis may help you get lean and toned. Helpful foods are ones high in healthy fats and high quality protein, such as wild salmon, raw nuts, grass-fed beef, whey protein, coconut oil, olive oil, MCT oil and avocados. Beneficial fruits and vegetables include spinach, kale, broccoli, sprouts, berries, bananas, watermelon, grapefruit, papaya and mushrooms.

CHIROPRACTIC: INCREASING COMMUNICATION WITHIN THE BODY Health is when your cells and organs are functioning properly in relationship with the rest of the body. How does the liver know what the stomach needs? It doesn’t, it’s the nervous system that not only initiates function but coordinates function throughout the body. If your nervous system is under too much stress organs and glands start to malfunction. Chiropractic adjustments reestablish and tune the proper communication and thus coordination to body function. Chiropractic patients have an immune system that functions substantially more efficient than the average person on the street. Studies show that regular chiropractic care improves the repair of DNA. IN THE NEWS: Resistance to antidepressants linked to metabolism “Many patients who suffer from depression do not respond to conventional antidepressant treatment, so we set out to examine the molecular changes that might explain this resistance,” says first author Benedetta Bigio, a bioinformatics specialist in Bruce McEwen’s Rockefeller lab. L-acetyl carnitine is naturally produced by the brain, liver, and kidneys. When given to rats and mice, it has been shown to rapidly alleviate depression-like symptoms by improving harmful imbalances in the brain’s glutamate signaling system. The researchers have also begun looking for abnormalities in natural LAC levels in people with depression. When the researchers took a closer look, they found 27 genes that seemed to be involved in resistance to the low-dose L-acetyl carnitine treatment, and, they suspect, to conventional antidepressants. These included those involved in the body’s ability to use fatty acids, as well as respond to insulin. Note: Chiropractic and nutrition can help with depression.

DIET: The perfect breakfast for people with depression Exercise has been described as a “wonder drug” for reducing symptoms, walking in nature reduces negative thoughts, and meditation can have a powerful positive effect. Our brain relies on nutrients to work effectively and studies have found that Omega-3, amino acids, B vitamins, Vitamin D, and minerals like zinc, magnesium and iron help create strong mental health. The Mediterranean diet, with its abundance of olive oil and leafy vegetables, contains many of these nutrients. Nutritionist Melissa Brunetti, who focuses on the connection between diet and mental health, says that an ideal breakfast for people struggling with depression would be eggs (which include amino acids, Omega-3, Vitamin D, and fatty acids), with sprouted-grain toast and smashed avocado. The fatty acids in eggs are key, she says. Those who crave chocolate can also act on that instinct: Chocolate, like avocado, contains tryptophan.

IN THE NEWS: Breast cancer patients' lives 'being ruined by side effects of chemo' that leaves them exhausted Debilitating treatment 'stops women going to shops or climbing stairs', Study finds 20% of over 65s unable to live independently after a year, Doctors say women should be given more help to cope with side effects. Dr Cynthia Owusu, an assistant professor at the University Hospitals, in Cleveland, Ohio, and her team undertook a detailed study of 184 women over 65 who had been diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. After 12 months of treatment – mainly chemotherapy – a fifth were unable to carry out basic daily tasks. These included walking across a room, light housework, shopping, kneeling or standing long enough to have a shower. Dr Owusu said it was largely due to ‘chemotherapy toxicity’ which essentially means the treatment is poisoning the body. Seven women died within the year, due to the side effects of the treatment or as a result of another illness other than breast cancer. In rare cases chemotherapy can be fatal and it causes damage to the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver. 'Beyond treating the cancer itself, the whole person has to be considered, including other health concerns and also the emotional impact of diagnosis and treatment. Note: Google black salve and breast-cancer there are alternatives.

WELLNESS: The secret to surviving a heart attack? Eating plenty of salmon, pecans and vegetable oils 'lowers chances of dying' Oily fish like mackerel, salmon and sardines have high levels of omega-3, Some nuts, seeds and oils contain high levels of plant-based equivalent, Study looked at research based on more than 45,000 patients globally. These foods reduce inflammation in the body which is the latest scientific understanding for heart disease. The cholesterol theory for heart disease has never once been proven through scientific studies in the past 50 years. Unfortunately sometimes politics and fraud produce practices that takes years to expose and change. If you’re taking drugs for cholesterol your shortening your life span. Change your diet and lifestyle and you can substantially reduce your likelihood of having a heart attack. Note: Ask for list of anti-inflammatory foods.

IN THE NEWS: What is alkaline water and can it really help with heartburn? You may have noticed the buzz about alkaline water recently: It’s a staple of the alkaline diet, and promoted by celebs like Miranda Kerr for its supposed health perks. Among those perks is the belief that alkaline H2O—which, by definition, has a higher pH (and lower acidity) than what comes out of the tap—can help neutralize stomach acid and relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, aka heartburn. NOTE: though this article was interesting and it does show benefits for heartburn that’s not the primary purpose of alkaline water. Alkaline water is one tool along with other foods and drinks to change your pH to more normal setting. Both urine and saliva should be 6.4. When your urine pH gets down to 5.5 or below this puts your body under stress. One of the things that happens is you start leeching alkaline minerals from your bone and teeth. So alkaline water can be an important tool if you system is hyper acidic which usually means it’s inflamed.

WELLNESS: Largest Cancer Study Ever Stuns Experts - They Were Wrong. Cancer is not a nuclear genetic disease, but occurs as a result of previous mitochondrial damage, which then triggers nuclear genetic mutations that may lead to cancer. Mitochondrial function can be significantly improved through diet. Eating higher amounts of healthy fats and lower amounts of net carbs, along with moderate amounts of high-quality protein, is key. Normal, healthy cells have the metabolic flexibility to adapt from using glucose to using ketone bodies. Cancer cells lack this ability, so when you reduce net carbs (total carbs minus fiber), you effectively starve the cancer.

CHIROPRACTIC: Disc problems: chiropractic versus steroid injections. The recent study comparing the effectiveness of chiropractic to a common practice of steroid injections from medical professionals have found chiropractic adjustments superior. Not only do the adjustments produce better outcome but there is significantly less side effects. What the study doesn’t cover is the difference between correcting the problem and suppressing the problem with drugs. When you have a disc problem you have an alignment problem in virtually all cases. Drugs cannot realign the spine. Even if the drug gave you symptomatic improvement the underlying issue is still present and disc damage is still progressing. When you correct the problem with adjustments, as you realign the vertebra you re-stabilize the disc which allows for normal healing. The difference in both approaches would not be fully realized until at least 5 to 10 years. At that point the continued deterioration would become obvious again under the drug therapy whereas the chiropractic approach, by fixing the problem, offers a better long-term outcome.

Walking away from pain and developing strategies for wellness
Pain is the number 1 reason that people visit doctors of any type. Addressing the pain properly will have an impact on your level of wellness. Most people want to feel good, have plenty of energy, sleep like a baby and maintain good focus and mental function. Depending on how you deal with your pain will have an impact on all of these. Drugs will interfere with every one of these wellness goals. If you have pain then fix the reason for the pain. Suppressing PAIN with drugs leads to the overall toxic burden on the body and allows you to use a part that the body is trying to rest and protect. Correcting the cause of pain will allow full function to return to that part of the body without further damage.
When it comes to joint pain alignment is one of the key components of restoring normal function. Chiropractic physicians work on virtually every joint in the body restoring mobility and flexibility. Blood and nerve flow travels through joints in the body and thus can be interfered with due to misalignments. Inflammation is a result of chronic joint misalignmentsand can contribute to slow repair time.

INFLAMASE The single most potent anti-inflammatory substance is A-Chymotrypsin. Although many supplements have Chymotrypsin-Trypsin combinations, only Inflamase contains pure A-Chymotrypsin. The addition of Bromelain, SOD, Catalase, and the enzymes listed above, make Inflamase the most complete broad spectrum anti-inflammatory currently available. During the inflammatory process, fibrinogen becomes polymerized into fibrin and impairs circulation within the affected tissue. The enzymes in Inflamase will circulate freely until they are impaired by this fibrin blockage. At this point theyadhere to fibrin, depolymerize the occlusion and restore drainage to the inflamed tissue.
Along with chiropractic treatments these 2 nutritional products can help get to the source of the pain and promote the healing of the tissues. Seek solutions for your health problems don’t just cover up the symptoms.

IN THE NEWS: Concussion rates highest for kids in rugby, hockey and football Concussion rates vary widely across youth sports, with the greatest injury risk in higher-contact games like rugby, hockey and football, a new research review finds. Overall, young athletes experienced an average of no more than one concussion for roughly every 5,000 minutes of participation time, according to the analysis of previous research on injuries in popular youth sports. That amounts to around one injury for every 67 hours of practice and competition. The concussion rate was about 18 times higher than average for rugby, five times greater for hockey, and roughly double for American football, the study found. A chiropractor can evaluate whether you demonstrate signs of neck injuries commonly associated with concussions, and provide you with relief of neck pain and cervicogenic headaches. According to the literature reviews, one of the most important recommendations that a chiropractor will tell you what to do for concussion is this: If your child is in sports and suffers a blow to the head, and/or experiences signs of a concussion, do not let him continue playing the sport.

WELLNESS: Shingles linked to increased risk of heart attack, stroke A bout of shingles may increase your risk for other serious health conditions — namely, a stroke or a heart attack — a new study finds. People in the study who had shingles, a disease caused by the herpes zoster virus, faced a 2.4-fold increased risk of stroke, and a 1.7-fold increased risk of heart attack during the first week following their shingles diagnosis, according to the findings published Dec. 15 in the journal PLOS Medicine. Shingles are best handled by nutritional therapy. The immune system imbalances can compromise a lot of other systems in your body. Proper chiropractic care along with nutrition can only help with the current situation but can have a domino effect at preventing other issues from developing that might be related.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: VISION PROBLEMS as we age most of us start to experience problems with our vision. Nutrition can help with a lot of these issues. In the last 20 years vision specialists have been recommending nutritional therapy for different eye conditions because of research. Chiropractic vs. Medicine:
Who is More Cost Effective
& Renders Better Outcomes for Spine?
By: Mark Studin DC, FASBE(C), DAAPM, DAAMLP

When we consider mechanical spine issues, we need to consider problems exclusive of fracture, tumor or infection. According to Houweling Et. Al. (2015) back pain effects 43% of the population over the course of a year. In addition, 33% of that group reported that their symptoms led to reduced productivity at work. In Switzerland, this accounted for 3% of their gross domestic products and equates to $14 Billion in US dollars. Chiropractic’s forte` and focus historically has been mechanical spine issues and when considering who the first provider that should be consulted, one needs to examine the scientific evidence based upon outcomes so that rhetoric has no place in utilization and the facts control the argument and direction of the patient.

Simply put, where should a patient go first because it has been proven conclusively that it is the best place to get better. From an insurance carrier and legislative perspective, the question goes one step further and examines the cost of care and wheat is the best solution in a cost-effective care-path realizing that often the government is the insurer or risk taker and even private carriers have a fiduciary responsibility to their stockholders to ensure a profitable return, while offering the best possible solutions for their insureds.

Day Et. Al. (2007) reported that only 26% of fourth year Harvard medical students had a cognitive mastery of physical medicine (pg. 452). Schmale (2005) reported “Incoming interns at the University of Pennsylvania took an exam of musculoskeletal aptitude and competence, which was validated by a survey of more than 100 orthopaedic program chairpersons across the country. Eighty-two percent of students tested failed to show basic competency. Perhaps the poor knowledge base resulted from inadequate and disproportionately low numbers of hours devoted to musculoskeletal medicine education during the undergraduate medical school years. Less than 1⁄2 of 122 US medical schools require a preclinical course in musculoskeletal medicine, less than 1⁄4 require a clinical course, and nearly 1⁄2 have no required preclinical or clinical course. In Canadian medical schools, just more than 2% of curricular time is spent on musculoskeletal medicine, despite the fact that approximately 20% of primary care practice is devoted to the care of patients with musculoskeletal problems. Various authors have described shortcomings in medical student training in fracture care, arthritis and rheumatology, and basic physical examination of the musculoskeletal system (pg. 251).

With continued evidence of lack of musculoskeletal medicine and a subsequent deficiency of training in spine care, particularly of biomechanical [Subluxation] orientation, the question becomes which profession has the educational basis, training and clinical competence to manage these cases? Let’s take a closer look at chiropractic education as a comparison. Fundamental to the training of doctors of chiropractic according to the American Chiropractic Association is 4,820 hours (compared to 3,398 for physical therapy and 4,670 to medicine) and receive a thorough knowledge of anatomy and physiology. As a result, all accredited doctor of chiropractic degree programs focus a significant amount of time in their curricula on these basic science courses. So important to practice are these courses that the Council on Chiropractic Education, the federally recognized accrediting agency for chiropractic education requires a curriculum which enables students to be “proficient in neuromusculoskeletal evaluation, treatment and management.” In addition to multiple courses in anatomy and physiology, the typical curriculum in chiropractic education includes physical diagnosis, spinal analysis, biomechanics, orthopedics and neurology. As a result, students are afforded the opportunity to practice utilizing this basic science information for many hours prior to beginning clinical services in their internship.

To qualify for licensure, graduates of chiropractic programs must pass a series of examinations administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). Part one of this series consists of six subjects, general anatomy, spinal anatomy, physiology, chemistry, pathology and microbiology. It is therefore mandatory for a chiropractor to know the structure and function of the human body as the study of neuromuscular and biomechanics is weaved throughout the fabric of chiropractic education. As a result, the doctor of chiropractic is expert in the same musculoskeletal genre that medical doctors are poorly trained in their doctoral education as referenced above.

A 2005 study byDeVocht, Pickar, & Wilder concluded through objective electrodiagnostic studies (neurological testing) that 87% of chiropractic patients exhibited decreased muscle spasms. This study validates the reasoning behind the later study that people with severe muscle spasms in the low back respond well to chiropractic care and this prevents future problems and disabilities. It also dictates that care should not be delayed or ignored due to a risk of complications.

The above statistic indicates that while medicine cannot conclude an accurate diagnosis in 85% of their back pain patients, chiropractic has already helped 87% of the same population. We also know that chiropractic is one of the safest treatments currently available in healthcare for spinal treatment and when there is a treatment where the potential for benefits far outweighs any risk, it deserves serious consideration. Whedon, Mackenzie, Phillips, and Lurie(2015) based their study on 6,669,603 subjects after the unqualified subjects had been removed from the study and accounted for 24,068,808 office visits. They concluded, “No mechanism by which SM [spinal manipulation] induces injury into normal healthy tissues has been identified”(p. 5).
Houweling Et. Al (2015) concluded “Patients who initially consulted with MDs were significantly less likely to be satisfied with the care received and the results of care compared with those who initially consulted DCs” (p. 480) and Adjusted mean costs per patient were significantly lower in patients initiating care with DCs compared with those initiating care with MDs. (p.480) “The findings of this study pertaining to patient satisfaction were in line with previous research comparing chiropractic care to medical care for back pain, which found that chiropractic patients are typically more satisfied with the services received than medical patients.” (p.481)
Houweling Et. Al (2015) continued “Mean total spinal, hip, and shoulder pain-related health care costs per patient during the 4-month study period were approximately 40% lower in patients initially consulting DCs compared with those initially consulting MDs. The reason for this difference was a lower use of health care services other than first-contact care in patients initially consulting DCs compared with those initially consulting MDs. Previous observational studies comparing medical and chiropractic care in terms of health care costs per patient have shown opposing results. Two studies conducted in the United States found that patients with low back pain treated in chiropractic clinics incurred higher costs than patients treated in medical clinics. One possible reason for these opposing findings is that differences were brought about by the methods of determining costs. In the studies conducted in the United States, costs were determined by chart audit, whereas in the present study, cost determinations were based on an insurance database review of all health care services used for the conditions investigated including the cost of visits to other health care providers.” Pg. 481
Perhaps the most telling point of Houweling Et. Al (2015) results were “Restrictive models of care in which patients are required to contact a medical provider before consulting a chiropractic provider may be counterproductive for patients experiencing the musculoskeletal conditions investigated and possibly others. In addition to potentially reducing health care costs, direct access to chiropractic care may ease the workload on MDs, particularly in areas with poor medical coverage and hence enabling them to focus on complex cases. The minority of patients with complex health problems initially consulting a chiropractic provider would be referred to, or co-managed with, a medical provider to provide optimal care. (p.481)
The above model not only suggests, but verifies that chiropractic should be the first choice or the primary spine care provider freeing up an already overburdened medical primary care provider’s office where they are not qualified to manage mechanical spine issues as reported above. This also helps resolve some of the issues in more rural regions where there is a shortage of primary care medical providers and positions the public to realize better outcomes and serves the insurers by ensuring lower costs.

You would think healthcare would be a straightforward profession of people who just want to help other people get well. Unfortunately politics and rivalry gets involved with healthcare as well. Soon after the AMA was started, its attack on other professions was one of their main jobs. Most people think the AMA is a public service organization but they would be wrong because the AMA is a union for medical doctors. Like any other union their main job is to make the working environment for their members as profitable as possible. Part of that strategy included demonizing other professions that they saw as competitors. In the past, medicine has fought battles to limit the practices of such professionals as homeopaths, naturopaths, osteopaths, podiatrists, optometrists, dentists, psychologists and chiropractors. In the case of osteopathy and chiropractic, there are distinct differences in the approach to healing and health when compared to medicine. The last thing that organized medicine wants is for their doctrine of drugs and surgery to be challenged.

For dentists they had oral surgeons, for podiatrist and chiropractic physicians they had orthopedic surgeons. And for osteopaths they were the alternative. So if they could eliminate those other professions that would mean more money in the pockets of their members, they gave up the fight against dentistry years ago they saw that was a losing battle. Even though you might not hear a lot about propaganda against podiatry it's still there to some degree. When it comes to surgery on the foot and leg podiatrist tend to have the more sophisticated and effective techniques yet you won’t hear that from the AMA. When I was in school the osteopathic profession set down with the medical profession and worked out a truce. Today you won’t hear much animosity between these two professions though when I’ve talked to osteopaths they still say they’re treated like second-class citizens from the medical profession. But it seems their fight against chiropractic has historically been their most vicious. I assume they saw the writing on the wall that the stronger chiropractic got the more they would lose a share of the patient population. Because studies show when patients have equal access they pick natural healthcare over drugs and surgery by a large numbers.

It was in 90s that the AMA commissioned a study on health practices and found more people were visiting doctors like chiropractic physicians then medical physicians. That was a shock to them and they immediately started to propagate changes in insurance coverage so more and more people would lose their access to chiropractic. Sometime back I believe in the 20’s they change the committee's name that was fighting chiropractic to the “committee on quackery”. Very interesting use of language.

Medicine's opposition to chiropractic was at its strongest under the leadership of Morris Fishbein. Fishbein as Secretary of the American Medical Association from 1924 to 1949, lead a 50 year anti-chiropractic campaign in both professional publications and the public media. Fishbein called chiropractors "rabid dogs" and referred to them as "playful and cute..but killers." He tried to portray chiropractors as members of an unscientific cult, caring about nothing but taking their patients money.

I guess since over 3000 people a week die from medical care they never heard the adage people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Any given year that you calculate death rates from the CDC website you will find that medicine is either the first or second leading cause of death. It takes a little work adding up all the different categories that they have listed under medical care but that’s been true for a long time. Chiropractic is not only the safest of the three largest healthcare professions in the US but we have the lowest malpractice rates. I guess that’s something Fishbein did not look into on his campaign against chiropractic.

In the October 1976, Chiropractic sued the AMA in federal court for discrimination and won the case. Wilk, et al vs. the AMA, et al It took several years because the AMA played every legal trick in the book but as soon as the case was brought many medical concerns quickly settled and stop their anti-chiropractic rhetoric. In 1987 , following 11 years of legal action, a federal appellate court judge ruled that the AMA had engaged in a “lengthy, systematic, successful and unlawful boycott” designed to restrict cooperation between MDs and chiropractors in order to eliminate the profession of chiropractic as a competitor in the United States health care system.

During the preceedings it was shown that the AMA attempted to:
Undermine Chiropractic schools
Undercut insurance programs for Chiropractic patients
Conceal evidence of the effectiveness of Chiropractic care
Subvert government inquires into the effectiveness of Chiropractic
Promote other activities that would control the monopoly that the AMA had on health care
(This was upheld by the 7th United States Circuit Court of Appeals.)

The AMA offered a patient care defense; however, data from Workmen's Compensation Bureau studies served to validate chiropractic care. Specifically, studies comparing chiropractic care to care by a medical physician were presented which showed that chiropractors were “twice as effective as medical physicians, for comparable injuries, in returning injured workers to work at every level of injury severity.”

The settlement of the suit included an injunctive order in which the AMA was instructed to cease its efforts to restrict the professional association of chiropractors and AMA members. The AMA was also ordered to notify its 275,000 members of the court's injunction. In addition, the American Hospital Association (AHA) sent out 440,000 separate notices to inform hospitals across the United States that the AHA has no objection to allowing chiropractic care in hospitals.
Since the court findings and conclusions were released, a growing number of medical doctors, hospitals, and health care organizations in the United States have begun including the services of chiropractors.

But for several years that term "quack" has been identified with natural healthcare practitioners particularly chiropractic which is the largest of natural healthcare practice in the world. What was both amusing and sad is during the deposition of the leader of that group it was shown how dishonest and despicable their activities were. One of the general claims against chiropractic is that chiropractic care caused multiple deaths. Not only was this claim unfounded, during the deposition he had to admit he had no proof of that claim but that was just his personal belief based on no objective findings. But no matter how immoral and how dishonest their activities were they did have an effect. There are people today who will not take a vitamin or go to a natural health care practitioner particularly a chiropractic physician because of the propaganda they heard years ago. But since they lost the court case they closed down the most egregious propaganda outlets. Now they still have friends in the private sector that will be glad to regurgitate their propaganda but they no longer can officially be involved with it. So they have been working underground more to reduce chiropractic coverage in insurance.

As mentioned earlier the court case showed that not only was chiropractic not effective, which they preached for years, but it was twice as effective as their approaches for the same condition. Ouch! The government did a study on low back pain which is the number one health condition in the United States and found the most effective treatment on the planet was spinal manipulation (adjustments). On December 8, 1994, the Agency for Health Care Policy and Research (AHCPR) of the US Department of Health and Human Services. It's unfortunate that lies can hang around for period of time but that's all they ever were, lies. When people are given equal access to chiropractic care or medical care they choose natural healthcare more often. That's why you find some insurances not having full access to chiropractic, the AMA still has their hand in the pot working behind the scenes.

With a number of conditions that chiropractic can safely and effectively treat growing all the time chiropractic should be your first approach. Chiropractic is both safe and effective and chiropractors refer to other professions more than the reverse. If medical doctors followed the government guidelines for just low back pain there would not be enough chiropractors in practice to serve all the people suffering from this condition. Yet some in the medical profession would rather have their patients suffer then refer them to the most effective treatment on the planet, how sad. Fortunately that trend has been changing over the past several years and as the older medical doctors die off more people will be referred to safe and effective chiropractic care. A high percentage of the new medical doctors coming into practice are turned off by politics. They realize the dangers of pain pills and are referring more of their patients to chiropractic physicians based on research not politics.
Chiropractic first, drug second and surgery last
is a model to live by.

CHIROPRACTIC: HELP FOR CROHN’S DISEASE Crohn’s disease is an ongoing disorder that is associated with inflammation of the digestive tract, also referred to as the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. It can affect any area of the GI tract, from the mouth to the anus, but is more commonly found in the end of the small bowel (ileum) and the beginning of the large intestine (colon). Chiropractic offers hope for patients suffering from this condition. Nerve irritation sometimes can be the source of the information, food allergies, a toxic colon and even autoimmune issues can give rise to Crohn’s disease. With a combination of chiropractic adjustments to remove the nerve irritation and detoxification along with targeted nutrition directed towards the immune system and/or the colon have been very successful. It's really difficult for all of us to see when we are being programmed or manipulated through advertisement/propaganda. But pharmaceutical companies spend billions of dollars on conditioning the population to choose its products over other methods of treatment. And sometimes we're in automatic mode when we decide our choice in healthcare. This can be a problem for a number of reasons. The first thing to consider is if you are deciding to utilize a drug as your first option you might not understand the dangers of that approach. Besides the over 2000 deaths per week due to the side effects of pharmaceutical drugs and the fact that medical care is a number one cause for death in United States based on CDC statistics there are other reasons to think twice about drugs being your first approach.

click pic
Simply put drugs don't heal, drugs alter your perception of the condition. Let's take headaches for example most headaches are caused by misalignments in the upper neck (muscle tension), other causes could be toxicity problems, allergies, low blood sugar or hormonal problems. Which of these do you think an aspirin fixes? Did you know aspirin causes bleeding in the stomach, Excess Stomach Acid Secretion, Stomach Cramps, Blood coming from Anus, Decreased White Blood Cells? This is just a partial list of potential side effects. Again the aspirin doesn't treat any of the underlying causes for your condition. Let's say your headaches were related to hormonal imbalances because of the developing ovarian cyst. You keep treating the headaches with an aspirin and your ovarian cyst keeps getting worse to the point that it might burst. Wouldn't it have been nice if the physician you went to wanted to understand the source of your headaches? But a common problem is if you're a MD/DO and have powerful drugs that can mask symptoms then when a patient presents with certain symptoms you are just gonna write a prescription and consider it appropriate care.

click pic
As a chiropractic physician we don't mask symptoms with drugs, we have to figure out why the symptom is there. Just to classify the headache is a tension headache or migraine headache and then give the latest masking drug the pharmaceutical company has recommended, in my opinion, is not proper healthcare. Proper healthcare tries to determine the underlying cause for the condition and correct the cause. I'm not saying that can be done 100% of the time because we don't understand the body fully, I am saying that most the time it can be. The underlying cause for allergies is not an antihistamine deficiency it's an inappropriate functioning immune system. When you correct the immune system you correct the allergies. Acid reflux is not an antacid deficiency it is an imbalance somewhere within the digestive system. It needs to be found and corrected which might include changing your diet. Back pain is not a muscle relaxer or anti-inflammatory deficiency disease.

click pic
When you just treat the symptoms you allow the condition time to get worse. This is one of the reasons that chronic diseases are such a high prevalence in our society. When you chronically just treat symptoms over a lifetime you end up with a basket full of chronic conditions. And this is why many people live their last 10 or 15 years of life in a nursing home, in a wheelchair suffering from multiple health problems. If you don't want to end up there you have to change the choices you make with your body. The fact is most drug therapy is inappropriate. Let me make this clear, there is a time for drugs and there is a time for surgeries but they should be the last approach. Unfortunately when you let certain conditions developed to the point of no return you eliminate a number of your options to get well.

click pic
Natural healthcare focuses on health not disease. Disease care has led to horrible health statistics for countries that focus their attention there. When a type II diabetic is taking one, two or three different medications to try to control their blood sugar they are in fact shortening their life span and making chronic disease more likely. The sad thing is the vast majority of type II diabetics can be drug free and healthy by some simple dietary and nutritional approaches. Lowering your blood sugar with drugs to force the sugar out of the body is not the same as correcting the blood sugar problem. Find the cause, correct the cause.

click pic
It is true that antibiotics can help clear acne in patients who suffer from it but it's also true that antibiotics will wreck havoc on your digestive track and weaken your immune system. Is acne a antibiotic deficiency disease? The skin is just the expression of the health of the body. Acne has to do with body ecology, hormonal balance and sometimes food allergies. The chances are the use of antibiotics will make each of these issues worse. And has anybody heard of superbug infections? The overuse of antibiotics is the number one cause for death from superbug infections that have been growing every year for the past 25 years. Is there a place for antibiotics? There is but it's very rare. There are so many natural immune boosting techniques in natural healthcare that well over 98% of my patients never require any antibiotics in their lifetime as long as they are following the approaches we recommend. Sure there are exceptions to every rule but in our society the exception is the rule.

click pic
Do you want to be healthy? Drugs are not going to get you there. Drugs could save your life but the same drugs that saved your life could end your life if you keep taking them. Drugs are toxic, drugs are dangerous. If you want to be healthy then you have to practice a healthy lifestyle. Did you know your nervous system controlled and coordinated everything that happens in your body? That's why we focus on spinal health to maintain a proper nervous system function. That is one of the five laws of health that we encourage patients to follow. The second law would be the law of diet. Do you really believe you could eat Twinkies all day and stay healthy? Of course not. But just like the big Pharma, big Food has programmed you into digging your own grave with your fork.

click pic
You have to eat a diet that's consistent with your genetic makeup and actually has real food in it. Eating right is really not that hard with a little direction you can increase your energy levels, strengthen your cardiovascular systems and maintain proper blood sugar levels very easily. The third law is exercise. You don't have to run a marathons, in fact you can over exercise to your detriment. Exercise is also related to your genetic makeup. Some people doing the wrong type of exercise can actually hurt themselves. People who have some type of moderate, regular exercise will be healthier than those who don't. Law four is a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Life can be hard you need to have coping skills in order to to be successful. Spiritual disciplines have been shown by research to make us healthier and to allow us to live a longer life. In the fifth law is rest and relaxation.

click pic
None of these laws are really difficult to follow you just need to find yourself in a culture that encourages these. The pharmaceutical approach is not that culture. It is nice to have a fire department, it's also a lot better that you never have to call them. And in most circumstances with a little prudence those disasters can be avoided. One of the best ways to find yourself in the culture of better health is to choose natural healthcare. Making natural healthcare your first choice can prevent a number of disasters in your life and your families health. You still might be referred to a medical specialist from time to time but if your primary care is a physician in the natural healthcare field your outcomes would be greatly improved.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Degenerative joint disease There are different reasons that people develop degenerative changes in their spine and other joints of their body but misalignments can be a big factor. When in joint is out of alignment and you use it repetitively that produces abnormal stresses on the structures of the joint causing a breakdown. Inflammatory chemistry will amplify these misalignments and accelerate the destructive forces leading to forms of arthritis. Chiropractic care along with good diet and exercise can help prevent degenerative joint disease. Patients who maintain some type of ongoing chiropractic care enjoy a lot better health than those who don’t. Stay regular with your care, eat right, increase the anti-inflammatory foods in your diet, exercise (movement equals life) and maintain a positive mental and spiritual attitude. Live long and prosper.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK:Toddlers’ sleep problems tied to behavior issues later In a long-term study, toddlers who slept less than 10 hours a night or woke frequently at night tended to have more emotional and behavioral problems at age five. The risk was higher for internalizing problems, like being emotionally reactive, anxious or depressed, than for externalizing problems, like attention deficit or aggression. Chronic sleep problems can also cause shifts in stress hormones. Early sleep issues may be part of the reason for later emotional or behavioral problems, but many other factors, like child temperament and parental mental health, may be important as well. DIET: Coca-Cola and PepsiCo Agree to Remove Flame Retardant Chemical from Their ProductsBowing to public pressure, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo have both agreed to remove brominated vegetable oil (BVO) from all of their beverages in the near future. BVO, first patented as a flame retardant, contains bromine, which has been found accumulating in people’s bodies and in women’s breast milk. Bromine is a toxic endocrine disruptor that can damage your thyroid and lead to cancer, infertility, schizophrenia, and many other serious diseases. BVO is banned across Europe and Japan, but in the US is still permitted under “interim” status, pending safety studies—for the last 44 years. FDA says studying BVO is not a priority for them at this time because it’s “not a public health risk” and shares interim status with saccharin, mannitol, and acrylonitrile.

IN THE NEWS: AstraZeneca's diabetes drug Onglyza may increase death rate, FDA saysAstraZeneca Plc's diabetes drug Onglyza may be associated with an increased rate of death, according to a preliminary review of data by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It’s sad when a patient goes to a doctor with a health problem and the treatment ends up killing them. Most people think that a drug wouldn’t be on the market unless it is both “safe and effective”. But drug after drug has shown this is not the case. The problem is the FDA allows the drug company to do all of the testing. And drugs like this get by the process. “The overall trial results did not reveal a higher death risk, but a more detailed analysis examining only patients who took the drug suggests "a significantly increased risk of all-cause mortality," the review found. Over 2000 people a week every week 52 weeks a year for the past 50 years die from taking prescription drugs. Chiropractic and natural healthcare is both safe and effective.
