IN THE NEWS: Damage and Death From Toxic Chemicals Are Reaching Epidemic Levels You are likely aware that air pollution may affect your lungs, but did you know it has a significant effect on your brain and your cognitive functioning? These changes affect not just adults, but have also been linked to lower IQ testing, development of ADHD in children and an increased risk of death. Toxins from the environment, both inside and outside, are almost impossible to avoid. Moreover, the traditional view of toxin exposure is outdated, so you'll need to consider different factors if you're attempting to reduce your exposure and susceptibility to disease and illness triggered by toxic chemicals. Today toxins can be inhaled, applied to your skin, injected or eaten with your food. The Environmental Working Group reports the average person has 91 toxic chemicals in their body. Unfortunately, while exposure to some chemicals are studied, researchers have no idea how this combined toxic soup and chemical interactions affect your health. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 25 percent of all deaths worldwide are attributable to poor environmental conditions, including air pollution. Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, commented: "A healthy environment underpins a healthy population. If countries do not take actions to make environments where people live and work healthy, millions will continue to become ill and die too young." Note: detoxification should be a normal practice in order to stay healthy. Eating a cleaner diet, a diet matched with your body type, along with increased water intake and particularly alkaline water if your body pH is acidic can go a long ways of maintaining body ecology. Through Vega testing we can pick up the need for detoxification and select the most effective formula to help you detox. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

WELLNESS: Can Pink Noise Help You Sleep? You probably don't think of noise in terms of colors, but there is a rainbow of noise out there — from the familiar white noise that occurs when a TV turns to static to the higher-pitched blue noise, which sounds similar to a hissing spray of water. Somewhere in the middle is pink noise, gentle sound similar to that of rushing water or wind blowing through leaves on a tree. Pink noise contains frequencies from 20 hertz to 20,000 hertz, just like white noise, but the lower frequencies are louder and more powerful than the higher frequencies (white noise, in contrast, has equal power in all of its frequencies). Senior study author Dr. Phyllis Zee, professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, told Time, "The noise is fairly pleasant; it kind of resembles a rush of water … It's just noticeable enough that the brain realizes it's there, but not enough to disturb sleep." Listening to pink noise improved sleep and memory among 60- to 84-year-olds, a population that tends to have reduced slow wave sleep, or deep sleep, compared to younger individuals. Pink noise enhanced slow wave sleep and was linked to better scores on memory tests. The participants scored about three times better on memory tests the morning after listening to pink noise in their sleep.

CHIROPRACTIC: Breaking the code for stress. Stress can accelerate any weakness or disease that you might have. Now there is good stress and bad stress. An example of good stress is exercise. Bad stress represents issues that your body has a hard time dealing with. Bad stress can put you in a “flight or fight” mode that leads to altered adrenal output which can be harmful to your heart over time. Bad stress is the stress you can’t resolve or control. Chiropractic and natural healthcare offers great tools and help the body deal with stress. You can’t eliminate stress in your life but you can improve how your body processes stress so it doesn’t break you down. Chiropractic adjustments, by rebalancing the nervous system, go a long ways in helping your body process stress in a healthy way. It’s through the nervous system that stress can adversely affect your immune system, your digestive system, your cardiovascular system and your overall ability to relax and sleep soundly. Along with chiropractic adjustments your diet and targeted nutritional therapy along with deep breathing exercises can be a game changer. If you have concerns about stress mention those to Dr. Keefe on your next visit.

Spring has sprung and for about 1 in five people, that means facing spring allergy season. For those with type 2 diabetes, spring allergies may require watching out for things that could affect your blood sugar. Discover how spring allergies could lead to raised blood sugar levels and how to prevent it.
Spring allergies typically cause a runny nose, itching and sneezing. The first impulse is to seek the immediate relief of an OTC or prescription oral medication such as an antihistamine. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of American reports about 20 percent of people who use antihistamines become drowsy. If you nap and miss a meal, you could wake up with a low blood sugar. Opt for antihistamines with less of a sedative effect. Additionally, oral decongestants can constrict blood vessels in the body producing effects such as a rise in blood sugar, heightened blood pressure and increased urine retention. Talk to your doctor about side effects and better options that minimize the possibility of blood sugar fluctuations. Also, precaution is required when combining oral decongestants with certain types of antidepressants.
Those with a persistent stuffy nose may select an OTC or prescription nasal spray. Some of them contain steroids that stimulate the liver to produce more glucose and lead to elevated blood sugar levels. Alternatives include an OTC decongestant or antihistamine nasal spray. Discuss the options with your doctor to find the right one for your allergies that won’t cause blood sugar fluctuations. Use a blood glucose meter system to regularly check your blood sugar levels. Report any highs or lows to your doctor right away.
Nasal irrigation is an effective way to relieve congestion and the symptoms associated with spring allergies. Options include a saline nasal spray, Neti pots, nose bidets, bulb syringes, pulsatile irrigation systems and squirt bottles. These methods can help flush out mucus and irritants from the nasal passages to help you breathe more comfortably. Nasal strips are other drug-free alternatives that help open the nasal passages for better airflow.
Spring allergies often come with a cough and a dry, scratchy throat. Cough drops can relieve this uncomfortable feeling. Make sure to check the label and choose a sugar-free brand. Also watch for sugar content in medications, including cough syrups that could cause your blood sugar levels to soar.
For stuffy noses and watery eyes associated with spring allergies, talk to your doctor about eye drops or nasal sprays that contain Cromolyn Sodium. This ingredient is a mast cell stabilizer that helps prevent the release of histamines during allergic reactions. These sprays should be started before the spring allergy season begins and continued until it ends. Modest improvements are made over several days with full benefits in up to one to two weeks.
Consider simple ways to beat spring allergies, so you can avoid the triggers that cause them. Shower after you spend time outdoors to remove the pollen from your body and hair. Close your car and home windows to keep pollen out. Filter allergens with an air filter or air conditioner. Get exercise, such as walking and hiking, on damp or rainy days when the pollen is more washed into the ground. Wear diabetic socks and rain boots that fit properly to keep your feet dry and warm.

Spring allergies can be uncomfortable and usually topical products are the most effective; they help without causing your blood sugars to rise. When in doubt, talk to your doctor and pharmacist about the best ways to relieve spring allergy symptoms without causing blood sugar fluctuations. Relief is available and it doesn’t have to cause your blood sugar levels to go through the roof.

DIET: How to Boost Brain Performance and Prevent Dementia Using No- or Low-Cost Strategies A diet that increases inflammation, such as one that includes high amounts of wheat, refined carbs and sugar is one of the root causes and greatest risk factors for Alzheimer’s disease; diet is also a foundational prevention and treatment strategy. To prevent Alzheimer’s, you need to focus on a diet that powers your brain and body with healthy fats, not net carbs. To shift your body into fat-burning mode, you need to dramatically reduce your net carbs, as your body will typically use whatever glucose is available first. However, that doesn’t mean you can never have large amounts of carbs ever again. In fact, remaining in nutritional ketosis for years on end may be ill advised. Alzheimer’s prevention and treatment is best approached from a holistic perspective. Besides a ketogenic diet, lifestyle factors that come into play include exercise, sleep, stress reduction, sun exposure and social interaction. Sleep can play a significant role in your brain health, as your brain can only detoxify and clean itself out during deep sleep.

IN THE NEWS: EPA Sued for Policy Many people are not aware that, in the U.S., dental offices are the single largest source of mercury at sewage treatment plants. When dentists discharge mercury from amalgam fillings (also known, misleadingly, as “silver” fillings) down the drains in their offices, it accumulates in the environment, including in seafood intended for human consumption. As a neurotoxin, mercury in the environment is dangerous for everyone, but poses a particularly grave risk for pregnant women, babies and children, in whom it can seriously disrupt brain function and harm the nervous system. In December 2016, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finalized a rule that would restrict dentists' mercury discharges by requiring them to install amalgam separators. With the changes in administration, that rule has been rolled back, and the EPA is facing a lawsuit because of it. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) states the EPA rescinded the rule illegally, as it cannot be done without public notice or a comment period.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: NUMBNESS IN THE ARM AND HAND if you or someone you know suffers from numbness in the arm or hand then you’re most likely dealing with the neck problem. Sometimes you might not have any symptoms in your neck yet the tiny bones in your neck could be pressing on the nerves that go down to your fingertips. Besides nerve pressure an unresolved whiplash can cause compression on the discs in the neck and as they break down put pressure on the nerves to the fingers. Realignment of the neck can resolve this condition along with shoulder problems, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome as well as numbness or swelling in the hand. It’s important to understand you can have nerve pressure without pain. If you or someone you know suffers from this condition have them call 918-663-1111.

IN THE NEWS: The Cancer-Soy Connection Is Getting Less Confusing
Most doctors who practice natural healthcare roll their eyes every time there’s an article where a medical doctor is criticizing nutrition or nutritional therapy. Because we know they had absolutely no training in that at med school. One of the areas that I’ve been combating is the bad press on soy; a recent article published in “Health Times” discusses the latest research. For instance, “In the report published in the journal Cancer, Zhang and her colleagues found that women diagnosed with breast cancer who consumed more soy did not have a higher risk of dying over nine years than women who ate less. And among women with a certain type of breast cancer, soy actually lowered their risk of dying from any cause during that time.” Phytoestrogen was the term that started all the bad press about soy. Because medical doctors were not familiar with that word and all they saw was “estrogen”. Of course you would not want to give estrogen to kids or women with breast cancer etc. and so the bad press started to spread throughout different articles in different publications. Today we would call this “fake news” and that’s exactly what happened to soy. Here are the facts: soy helps modulate hormones in both male and female. Thus soy can help prevent breast cancer, menopausal symptoms and other hormonal signs and symptoms in both men and women. Soy could help modulate the effect of testosterone on prostate cancer. So a handful of edamame as a side dish can help prevent different hormonal related problems.

WELLNESS: Essential Oils for Arthritis CLOVE (EUGENIA CAROPHYLLATA) This highly effective natural analgesic oil works on most types of pain, including both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, as well as gout—a type of arthritis of the big toe. Because it is extremely potent, use only one drop to one hundred drops, or about one teaspoon of carrier oil after first conducting a skin patch test. Avoid using if you have extremely sensitive skin. GINGER (ZINGIBER OFFICINALIS) Ginger essential oil brings a soothing warmth when applied to arthritic joint, but it is also great for easing the muscular pain and stiffness of fibromyalgia. Use no two to three drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply topically to affected joints. LAVENDER (LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA) Both a pain reliever and nervous system relaxant, lavender is good for easing joint and muscle aches, as well as easing stiffness. If pain is keeping you awake at night, lavender essential oil is also great for sleep, particularly if a drop or two of the essential oil is rubbed on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands before bed. While most essential oils need to be diluted, lavender can often be tolerated neat (undiluted) by most people. However, if you have extremely sensitive skin, dilute two drops of lavender in about 4 drops of a carrier oil like fractionated coconut or apricot kernel oil. LEMONGRASS (CYMBOPOGON CITRATUS) Lemongrass oil is useful for toning the connective tissues and can be helpful when the tendons no longer hold the joints with precision. Dilute in few drops in a teaspoon of carrier oil. MARJORAM (ORIGANUM MAJORANA) Marjoram oil can be used for easing muscle aches and stiffness along with helping to heal bruises and joint sprains. It is a good choice for topical use for those with fibromyalgia, which is a form of arthritis. It helps with pain but also alleviates muscle tightness. Avoid marjoram essential oil if you have epilepsy. PEPPERMINT (MENTHA PIPERITA) Peppermint contains analgesic compounds that reduce pain and inflammation. Like lavender, it can usually be tolerated on the skin in its neat form (undiluted) to help reduce pain. A little goes a long way as this oil leaves an intense cooling sensation on the skin. Use one drop and massage into painful or inflamed joints. Wash hands immediately and avoid eye contact. Make sure you select high quality, pure, undiluted essential oils. While you may end up diluting the oils yourself, most of the oils on the market are diluted in less-than-desirable oils. High quality oils cost more than the cheap varieties on the market but are worth the increased price. Many cheap varieties can also contain synthetic versions of the oils, which offer no therapeutic value and may actually be harmful. But, worse than that, many cheap oils are adulterated with solvents used during the extraction process or toxic pesticides used in the growing process of the herbs from which the oils are extracted. After diluting the oil in carrier oil, always conduct a 48-hour patch test on a small inconspicuous part of your skin to determine whether you have any sensitivity to the essential oils.

IN THE NEWS: Women who have a flare-up of herpes - or are infected - during early pregnancy are twice as likely to have an autistic child, study warns. Pregnant women with herpes are twice as likely to have autistic children, a new study warns. Scientists say women who have a flare-up or are infected with genital herpes early in their pregnancy have twice the risk of giving birth to a child later diagnosed with autism. Past studies have assumed that children have been directly infected, but such infections are typically deadly. Researchers found that a mother's immune response to either getting an infection or a flare-up causes neurodevelopmental problems in the unborn child. The study is the first to provide immunological evidence on the role of an active infection in the womb and autism, particularly in boys. NOTE: If you suffer from herpes and are pregnant your first step is to clean up your diet. Nutrients like l-lysine, omega-3 and other immune boosting nutrients can make a difference. Get a list of anti-inflammatory foods and give your baby the best chance to be as healthy as possible.

WELLNESS: Benefits of Probiotics: How Your Gut Bacteria Can Influence Your Health When asked about the location of their immune system, many people don’t know. A surprisingly large number of people don’t associate their immune systems with any specific part of their body. Rather than being confined to a particular organ, about 80 percent of your immune system resides in your gastrointestinal tract in the form of receptor cells. Because of this prime location, what happens in your gut can powerfully influence your immune function. When your gut is healthy, you have a large, thriving population of beneficial or friendly bacteria, or probiotics, supporting your immune system receptor cells. They help form a protective barrier within your colon and intestines. Ideally, you want about 85 percent of your gut bacteria to be of this beneficial type. Optimizing and supporting the beneficial bacteria in your gut is one of the most powerful things you can do for your health and well being, including your immune health. As long as you can help your body maintain this optimal balance – 85 percent beneficial to about 15 percent “other” microbes – you support the health-promoting benefits of probiotics. The health benefits of probiotics: healthy immune function, weight management, digesting and absorbing carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, and waste removal, psychological and emotional health support, skin health support.

CHIROPRACTIC: Natural healthcare and chiropractic Studies show more people are searching for natural solutions for their health. In 1993 the American Medical Association is a survey of health habits of Americans and found that more Americans visited doctors are practiced natural healthcare then doctors practicing drug therapy and surgery. There are many reasons for this shift in healthcare. Some people are concerned about the side effects that drugs have, (2000 deaths per week as well as 1 million injuries per year), some people have a sense of body ecology and don't want to put any artificial substances within their body. Some people have discovered drugs mainly cover-up symptoms and never get to the root of your problem. There are more concerned with maximizing their health than just making some symptoms disappear. I'm sure you have seen a popular magazine or news program on TV discussing the benefits of different natural healthcare techniques. Chiropractic is the world's largest natural healthcare profession and specializes in finding the root cause of health problems and helping restore patients to better health through natural methods.
