IN THE NEWS: Most Shocking Medical Mistakes, and How You Can Protect Yourself Each day, more than 40,000 harmful and/or lethal medical errors occur in the U.S., and preventable medical errors kill around 440,000 patients each year, making medical mistakes the third leading cause of death. One in 25 patients end up acquiring an infection while in the hospital, and 75,000 people per year die as a result. Since 1983, 132 newborns have been abducted from U.S. health care facilities, and hundreds of individuals have been caught posing as doctors when, in fact, they did not have a medical degree. Misdiagnoses may occur in 10 percent of all cases, and 30 million prescriptions are improperly dispensed each year in U.S. pharmacies. Two in 10,000 surgical patients come out of surgery with a surgical instrument left inside, and an estimated seven patients undergo surgery on the wrong body part each and every day. Just a few reasons to pick natural healthcare. They found that an estimated 42 percent of all cancer cases in America (659,640 of the 1,570,975 cancers diagnosed in 2014) were attributable to these modifiable risk factors. These factors were also the underlying cause of 45.1 percent of cancer deaths (265,150 of 587,521 deaths) that same year. Staggeringly, they believe this is an understatement, since there are other risk factors that they couldn't get the data for. There are also a number of cancers which are widely suspected to be caused by certain risk factors, but the links are not yet proven. NOTE: These are general recommendations or observations and so it’s important to individualize a program based on your genetic makeup. Lauren Blake, a dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, agreed, and told Fox News that people shouldn’t restrict to the point that they’re always hungry. “There’s evidence that says when we restrict too much, it can be harmful to our metabolism, and it supports the loss of lean muscle mass,” she said. 1. Don’t skip breakfast. To regulate your hunger throughout the day, eat breakfast, whether that’s a bowl of cereal, some eggs, or even dinner leftovers, Planells said. 2. Keep healthy snacks on hand. To keep your blood sugar stable, avoid going four hours or more without eating, Planells said. Try snacks like yogurt, a handful of nuts, or even peanut butter and fruit to keep you full, he said. 3. Don’t drink your calories. Drinks deliver calories a lot faster than solids, Blake said. WELLNESS: How to Improve Your Failing Ability to Read Clearly as You Age, With the Help of Sunshine Nearsightedness is incredibly common, affecting an estimated 40 percent of Americans and up to 90 percent of young adults in Asian countries. A 2015 study estimated up to one-third of the world's population may be nearsighted by the end of the decade — that's 2.5 billion people. The following year, a meta-analysis of 145 studies predicted nearly half of the world will be nearsighted by the year 2050. One longstanding theory was that excessive reading at close distance (particularly in poor lighting) could lead to nearsightedness. Research refutes this theory, noting a clear lack of association between the two. Mounting research now shows the risk of nearsightedness is closely linked to time spent outdoors, both for children and adults. To protect your vision, you need regular exposure to bright sunlight. Nearsightedness (myopia), is a vision problem in which close objects appear clear but distant objects are blurry. This condition is thought to be caused by refractive errors in your eye. Refraction is the bending of light as it passes through one object to another. When light rays are refracted through your eye's cornea and lens, they become focused on the retina, which then converts the light into messages sent through the optic nerve to your brain, which then interprets the messages into images. Refractive errors occur when the shape of your eye prevents light from focusing properly on your retina. This can occur by changes in the shape of your eye, such as the length of your eyeball or shape of your cornea, and/or changes in your lens due to aging. But what exactly is responsible for these changes? Two studies, the first published in 20077 and the second in 2008, found that rates of nearsightedness in children appeared to be closely linked to the amount of time spent outdoors. The greater the number of hours spent playing outside, the lower the risk of nearsightedness. In other words, keeping kids indoors and/or instilling a fear of sun exposure (for skin cancer reasons) may be at the heart of the world's growing myopia problem. Remarkably, according to a British survey, 75 percent of children in the U.K. spend less time outdoors than prison inmates!
CHIROPRACTIC: Reduction of Labor and Delivery Time Due to Chiropractic Care The Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health published a case study on April 3, 2017, documenting the case of a woman who experienced a shorter and easier birth due to chiropractic care. This improvement was compared to her first pregnancy and delivery where she did not receive any chiropractic care. The study begins by noting that chiropractic care has been involved in the care of pregnant women since the early days of the profession over a century ago. In this study, a 28-year-old woman went to the chiropractor for evaluation and possible care. She sought chiropractic for a pain in her tailbone area as well as for wellness care. The woman believed that her pelvis had shifted due to her first pregnancy. She reported that after the delivery of her firstborn, she experienced pain and discomfort at her tailbone any time she sat on a hard surface. The woman reported that her first pregnancy went well, but that her delivery was very long and difficult. This was one of the factors in her desire to receive chiropractic care in anticipation of her second pregnancy. Her history revealed that between the ages of eight and sixteen, she was a competitive gymnast and was receiving chiropractic intermittently during that time. She also noted that she did not receive any chiropractic care during her first pregnancy. Prior to her first pregnancy, she did not have tailbone pain. She later attributed her long and difficult labor and delivery as being the cause of the tailbone pain. As with her first birth, the woman decided to have her second child at home. She was supervised by the same Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) that attended her first home birth. According to the midwife, the woman's first labor and delivery time combined was 32 hours and 25 minutes. After chiropractic care, the midwife reported that the woman's labor and delivery times for her second child was only two hours and 45 minutes combined. In their conclusion, the study authors note that chiropractic care during pregnancy is far more valuable than just symptomatic relief of musculoskeletal pains, and should be considered for the overall wellness and process of pregnancy. They stated, "This case report provides supporting evidence that subluxation centered chiropractic care on pregnant patients can have beneficial effects on the birthing process."

IN THE NEWS: FLORIDA MAN PLACED IN A COMA AFTER E-CIGARETTE EXPLOSION Evan Spahlinger, 21, is in critical condition after he was found on the floor covered in soot by family members, WINK News reported. “I found my bother not breathing, with his whole face burned and his neck burned and trying to throw up a little or maybe he was gasping for air, so I called 911, “They said he has internal and external burns and damage to his lungs for the explosion itself,” Richardson told WINKNews.com. “And possibly the mouth piece went, when the cigarette exploded, it went down his throat and exploded again.”

This is hardly the first study to find no difference between the two types of soap, but it is the first to test regular and anti-bacterial soaps against 20 strains of bacteria in a lab, the researchers said. The investigators also tested the soaps on people's dirty hands. Today, manufacturers add triclosan to an array of products, including toothpaste, shampoo, clothing, kitchenware, furniture and toys, with the goal of reducing or preventing bacterial contamination and growth, the researchers said. However, triclosan has been linked to several negative effects on health. Research has tied it to antibiotic resistance among germs, and allergies and hormone disruption in people. One study even found that long-term exposure to triclosan might cause cancer in mice.

WELLNESS: Controlling blood sugar may help prevent dementia, study finds Controlling blood-sugar levels may help prevent dementia, a study released on Tuesday showed, offering hope to patients with diabetes that keeping glucose levels in check might reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and other types of cognitive impairments. Studying 350,000 patients with Type 2 diabetes, researchers at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden found that those with poor blood-sugar control had a 50% higher risk of being admitted to hospital than those with good control. Scientists have previously suggested a link between elevated blood-sugar levels and Alzheimer’s disease, but the researchers said this was the first large-scale study looking at how controlling the presence of glucose in the blood affected the risk of being diagnosed with dementia in the future.

Nosebleeds can be dramatic and frightening. Luckily, most nosebleeds are not serious and can be handled fairly easily. They are divided into two types, depending on whether the bleeding is coming from the anterior (front of the nose) or posterior (back of the nose). Anterior nosebleeds make up more than 90% of all nosebleeds.

The bleeding usually comes from a blood vessel at the very front part of the nose. Anterior nosebleeds are usually easy to control, either by measures that can be performed at home or by a doctor. Posterior nosebleeds are much less common than anterior nosebleeds. They tend to occur more often in elderly people. The bleeding usually comes from an artery in the back part of the nose. These nosebleeds are more complicated and usually require admission to the hospital and management by an otolaryngologist (an ear, nose, and throat specialist).

Nosebleeds tend to occur during winter months and in dry, cold climates. They can occur at any age but are most common in children aged 2 to 10 years and adults aged 50 to 80 years.

Nosebleed Causes
Most commonly, trauma to the nose triggers a nosebleed. Trauma to the outside of the nose, such as a blow to the face, or trauma inside the nose, such as nose picking or repeated irritation from a cold, can cause a nosebleed.

Less commonly, an underlying disease process, such as an inability of the blood to clot, may contribute to the bleeding. Inability of the blood to clot is most often due to blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin(Coumadin) or aspirin. Liver disease can also interfere with blood clotting. Abnormal blood vessels or cancers in the nose are rare causes of nosebleeds. High blood pressure may contribute to bleeding but is almost never the only reason for a nosebleed.
To stop a nosebleed:

Remain calm.
Sit up straight.
Lean your head forward. Tilting your head back will only cause you to swallow the blood.
Pinch the nostrils together with your thumb and index finger for 10 minutes. Have someone time you to make sure you do not release the nostrils any earlier.

Still dripping? Wad up a small piece of tissue or gauze, then stick it between your gums and upper lip in the area right under your nose. Leave it there for 5 to 10 minutes. The tissue puts pressure on the blood vessels that are sending blood to your nose. There are countless versions of this remedy—pouring vinegar, witch hazel, or lemon juice on the tissue; using a small square of brown paper from a bag sprinkled with salt; even placing a dime or a small, flat button under your upper lip instead of a tissue.
Apply an ice pack alongside the bleeding nostril. The cold narrows the blood vessels in the nose to slow the spurting.

If you want to avoid nosebleeds, keep your mucous membranes moist by drinking eight 8oz glasses of water a day. You are well hydrated if your urine is pale, not dark.
Don’t overdo the AC. Air-conditioning dries out the air, leaving you more prone to nosebleeds.
In winter, add moisture indoors by running a humidifier.
Spritz your nostrils liberally with a saline nasal spray.
Watch your aspirin intake. Aspirin can interfere with blood clotting, and of course that’s not a good thing if you get frequent nosebleeds.

If you have nasal allergies, treat them promptly. Between the constant irritation caused by allergens and the damage done by blowing your nose, nasal membranes take a real beating when you’re having an allergic reaction.

If you often have trouble with nosebleeds, take 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams of vitamin C every day to help prevent them. Vitamin C helps strengthen capillary walls and is also a vital component of collagen, a substance that gives your nostrils a moist, protective lining. Along with vitamin C, take 1000 milligrams daily of a bioflavonoid supplement such as grape-seed extract, pine-bark extract, pycnogenol, or proanthocyanins. Flavonoids are known to heal capillaries.

Finally, make sure you’re eating enough broccoli and leafy greens, which contain vitamin K, the clotting vitamin. Many Americans, at different seasons of the year, are plagued by symptoms of runny noses, watery eyes, congested glands, persistent coughs, and recurring upper respiratory infections, all due to allergic reactions. Allergies can be simply defined as the body’s inappropriate response to certain substances, usually proteins (antigens). These proteins can be ragweed, grass pollens, any plant substance found in the air, a particular food or a chemical that is ingested or inhaled. These antigens can cause immune system responses, classically the congested, runny noses, watery eyes, congested sinuses and lungs; but allergic responses can also include depression, asthma, joint pain, diarrhea, constipation, and many other symptoms.

We call these responses inappropriate because everyone will breathe in the ragweed or grass pollen, or eat certain foods, but only a certain percentage of the population will have reactions to these as antigens. These reactions thus represent an inappropriate response to common substances. In other words, the body interprets these common substances as invading organisms, and the immune system mounts a response as if it was being attacked. However, the particular antigens usually do not cause any tissue damage under normal circumstances. In fact, the damages (or symptoms that are produced within the body) are usually due to the body’s inappropriate immune system response to the substance.

It is this inappropriate response that needs to be treated - and not just the symptoms of the allergies. The standard medical approach to allergies is to suppress the symptoms with dangerous antihistamines, cortisone preparations, and other medications that are designed only to repress the body’s responses. This method is one that I term a “COVER-UP” method. It does not help a patient with his or her allergies; it only artificially covers up the symptoms of these allergies. The question that needs to be asked is, “Why do these people have inappropriate allergy responses?"

The answer to this is: the nervous system has an imbalance in the way it responds to certain proteins or other substances, and it is that response that must be corrected, not suppressed.
Below listed is the protocol which we have developed through trial and error over the years and with which we are currently enjoying great success at Keefe Clinic.
First of all, we understand that it is not the ragweed or any other antigen that is the problem, but it is the body’s response to it that is the problem. Therefore, we look to the nervous system as the root cause, because the imbalance is within the nervous system, which then causes the abnormal reaction.

1) The first area of treatment is that of homeopathy. Homeopathy is a system based on the principle of “like cures like”. In the case of the allergies, the substance that would be used would be the antigen (the pollen, ragweed, food, etc) that produces the improper symptoms. This antigen is diluted several times to form a product that will help the body adjust its inappropriate reaction to become an appropriate reaction. By giving this antigen in a diluted fashion, and by diluting it enough that it will not produce an allergy reaction by itself, a slight response is produced that will gradually desensitize the body to the offending substance.

For instance, if you have an allergy to ragweed pollen, when you breathe it in, your immune system begins to fight the ragweed as if it was an invading bacteria or virus. Thus, we would take ragweed pollen and dilute it down to a level where it will not cause that same immune response - indeed, at this level, it has been found that it will produce an opposite response. In other words, it will re-calibrate the body in such a way that it will not react to this pollen as a foreign invader. Over a period of time, by ingesting diluted antigens, the body will build up a resistance to this inappropriate response (allergic reaction). This strengthening of the body can lead to a permanent cure for this allergy. The homeopathic treatment program is similar to the allergy injection program practiced in the United States.

In fact, when an allergist gives an injection of diluted pollens, he is practicing a crude form of homeopathy. We say "crude" because the homeopathic physicians developed this technique in Europe over a hundred years ago, and they used very precise dilutions. Allergy mixes are liquids given by mouth in small doses on a regular basis - easily administered even to very small children. These particular products sometimes require changing in potency in order to effect a permanent cure. Most people start out using a 6x potency, and most will develop a permanent cure with that potency alone. 2) The next approach in allergy work that we use is re-establishing a normal function of the nervous system in regard to these antigens. For this we utilize Chiropractic care. Chiropractic, of course, helps relieve nerve pressure and establishes normal nerve functioning within the body. Vertebra can lose their normal position and crowd the nerve root causing disruption of the normal control over the body. Many disease processes have their start from subluxation complexes that were neglected because there was no pain and the person did not have his or her spine checked for problems. Chiropractic adjustments are safe and effective for many of the most common health problems that we suffer.

3) It has also been found that particular antigens will disrupt certain electrical-type circuits within the body. In acupuncture, these circuits are called meridians. Several points which show less resistance to electrical current are found along the meridians, and these points can be mapped out by use of electronic machines that register skin resistance in the body. It has been found that there are twelve meridians that are found on both sides of the body, as well as two meridians that are found along the center of the body, both in the front and in the back. These meridians are associated with certain functions, organs, muscles and parts of the body. Each meridian has a particular name, e.g., the kidney meridian (associated with certain parts of the body, including the kidneys). There is a liver meridian, a heart meridian, etc. These meridians are electrical circuits that tend to be associated with these key organs and muscles. It is found that certain antigens will disrupt these electrical circuits in the body and produce the allergy response. Through the acupuncture-allergy technique, we determine which circuits are disrupted by a particular antigen, and then by a proper stimulation of the key points within the meridian, as a particular antigen is being held or placed on the body, we cause the nervous system to re-adjust how it responds to that antigen. In a few cases, this can produce almost instantaneous reversal of the allergy response in the body.

This is a new technique, and promises to be a very effective way of re-programming the nervous system in its inappropriate response to antigens. This treatment program can vary as to number of treatments required to produce a permanent cure, but a number of patients will respond within 1-6 treatments when we are dealing with a particular antigen. 4) Nutritional therapy is another important part of an over-all program. Weak organs are involved in allowing the body to have an allergic reaction. Giving nutritional support to these weak organs will help a patient recover his health, and allow him to end the cycle of the chronic allergy sufferer who normally has episode after episode of allergy symptoms. Through the use of properly selected products, the allergic system can be returned to normal function. Remember: allergies do not represent a normally functioning body. IN THE NEWS: STUDY AFTER STUDY SHOWS THE FLU SHOT IS A SCAM A study published in the October 2008 issue of the Archives of Pediatric; Adolescent Medicine found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no impact on flu-related hospitalizations or doctor visits during two recent flu seasons. The researchers concluded that “significant influenza vaccine effectiveness could not be demonstrated for any season, age, or setting” examined. A 2008 study published in the Lancet found that influenza vaccination was NOT associated with a reduced risk of pneumonia in older people. This also supports an earlier study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine. Research published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine also confirms that there has been no decrease in deaths from influenza and pneumonia in the elderly, despite the fact that vaccination coverage among the elderly has increased from 15 percent in 1980 to 65 percent now. In 2007, researchers with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, and the National Institutes of Health published this conclusion in the Lancet Infectious Diseases: A large-scale, systematic review of 51 studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2006, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in children under 2. The studies involved 260,000 children, age 6 to 23 months.

"Don't count on milk to beat osteoporosis.
In a Harvard study of 78,000 nurses, drinking three or more glasses of milk per day did not reduce fractures at all. An Australian study showed the same thing.
Nearly 78,000 nurses participated in the 12-year milk and bone fracture study. MILK, DIETARY CALCIUM AND BONE FRACTURES The study found "no significant association" between teenage milk consumption and the risk of adult fractures. Data from the study indicate that frequent milk consumption and higher dietary calcium intakes in middle aged women do not provide protection against hip or forearm fractures. A SHOCKING AND UNEXPECTED REVELATION
In the Harvard study, women consuming greater amounts of calcium from dairy foods had significantly INCREASED risks of hip fractures, while no increase in fracture risk was observed for the same levels of calcium from non-dairy sources.
“Consumption of dairy products, particularly at age 20 years, was associated with an increased risk of hip fracture in old age. (“Case-Control Study of Risk Factors for Hip Fractures in the Elderly”. American Journal of Epidemiology. Vol. 139, No. 5, 1994).
And the 12 year long Harvard Nurses’ Health Study found that those who consumed the most calcium from dairy foods broke more bones than those who rarely drank milk. This is a broad study based on 77,761 women aged 34 through 59 years of age.
“These data do not support the hypothesis that higher consumption of milk or other food sources of calcium by adult women protects against hip or forearm fractures.” (Source: Feskanich D, Willett WC, Stampfer MJ, Colditz GA. Milk, dietary calcium, and bone fractures in women: a 12-year prospective study. American Journal of Public Health. 1997).
Amy Lanou Ph.D., nutrition director for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine in Washington, D.C., who states that: “The countries with the highest rates of osteoporosis are the ones where people drink the most milk and have the most calcium in their diets. The connection between calcium consumption and bone health is actually very weak, and the connection between dairy consumption and bone health is almost nonexistent.”

THERE is not a shred of evidence that upping calcium intake above a relatively low threshold, improves bone health or reduces the risk of bone fractures.
A study just published in the prestigious British Medical Journal hammers another nail into the coffin of the eat-more-calcium-for-stronger-bones myth, with the finding that women with the highest intake of calcium had a 19% higher risk of experiencing a hip fracture than those whose calcium intake was modest but adequate.
This study's strengths included: the large number of study subjects (over 60 000 Swedish women); the duration of follow-up (19 years); the fact that it was prospective (i.e. the participants were recruited before any of them had suffered a fracture) and calcium intake was repeatedly measured over the follow-up period, eliminating the problem of 'recall bias' -the tendency of people who have already suffered a disease, to overestimate their past exposure to risk factors for it - that plagues retrospective studies; and the statistical adjustment for various other factors that affect bone health and fracture risk, such as smoking, physical activity level, and whether the women had had children (which decreases fracture risk).
The researchers analyzed the participants' diet records, and divided them into 5 groups, from lowest to highest calcium intake. They found that women with the lowest calcium intake from foods and supplements (less than 750 mg per day) had an 18% higher risk of suffering any type of fracture, and a 29% greater risk of hip fracture, than women who consumed 882-996 mg of calcium per day (an amount easily achieved on an entirely plant-based diet, high in green leafy vegetables, legumes, nuts and seeds).
However, women with the highest calcium intake (more than 1137 mg per day) had a 19% higher risk of suffering a hip fracture than those in the 882-996 mg/day group. "I've heard statistics like a 700 percent rise in osteoporosis in a 10-year period, even while taking all this calcium. The myth that's been created about calcium is that we need twice as much calcium as we do magnesium. Most of the supplements reflect this. Turnips. (You may use the leaves or tops also.)
Dessert Fresh fruit with a little pure honey.
Coffee or Tea …………………………. Not at this meal.
Between lunch and dinner, drink all the fruit and vegetable juice you desire. Eat all the fresh fruit and vegetables you want. Fill up! It's medicine for you. REMEMBER: The purge comes from the vitamins and minerals in the food, so be sure to eat plenty.
DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS
Vegetable Broth ……Drink TWO CUPS during the meal, more if you desire.
Cooked Vegetables ………….. Select two or three of the different kinds listed above and cook them with butter. Eat a generous helping of each. (No potatoes.)
Bread ………… One medium slice WHOLE WHEAT bread with butter.
Dessert ………. Baked apple with cream or a salad of fresh fruits. A little honey OK.
Coffee or Tea NOT at this meal. And ... if you still feel hungry after dinner, eat fresh fruits and drink, fruit or vegetable juice ... ALL YOU WANT!
RECIPE FOR VEGETABLE BROTH
Take 7 carrots and 1 small bunch of celery and cut fine. Place in 2 quarts hot water and boil for 15 minutes. Add 1/3 bunch of parsley and a large handful of fresh spinach, cut fine. Boil 10 minutes more. Drain off the juice or broth. Flavor with salt, onion, okra, tomatoes, green peppers or garlic. (You may save the vegetables and use for your cooked vegetables at dinner.)
The above recipe makes about 1 day's supply. You can make more if desired, and keep in the refrigerator. It can be used hot or cold. The purpose of this broth is to FLUSH. Drink lots of it during the six days. It is full of minerals from the vegetables. It is really a refreshing, soothing drink. Enjoy!
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE PROGRAM

Abstract OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS:
Saline irrigation would be more effective for chronic sinusitis patients if it had bactericidal effects. Low concentrations of hypochlorous acid (active ingredant in anolyte water) may be used as a nasal irrigation solution.
First, we developed a 0.85% NaCl solution by adding NaCl to tap water (pH 7.0 and 8.4) and measuring the concentration of free chlorine and hypochlorous acid after giving the solution a short electrical impulse of 20 seconds. Then we investigated whether the derived hypochlorous acid had a toxic effect on human primary nasal epithelial cells, if and what effect it had on the expression of mucin genes, and, finally, if it had bactericidal, fungicidal, or virucidal effects.
STUDY DESIGN: In vitro biochemical experiment.
METHODS:
We treated human primary nasal epithelial cells with 3.5 ppm of hypochlorous acid and then examined the cells for cytotoxicity. We also investigated the bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal effects by challenging the cells with the following microorganisms Aspergillus fumigatus, Haemophilus influenzae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Rhizopus oryzae, Candida albicans, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Streptococcus pyogenes. To study the virucidal effects of HOCl, we used the human influenza A virus to challenge the cells.
RESULTS:
In the cytotoxicity assay and in the morphological examination, the cells did not show anytoxicity at 30 minute or 2 hours after treatment with HOCl. More than 99% of bactericidal or fungicidal activity was noted for all species, except for Candida albicans, in tap water at either pH 7.0 or 8.4. In addition, a 3.2-log10 reduction was achieved in cells challenged with the human influenza A virus.
CONCLUSIONS: A low concentration HOCl solution can be used as an effective nasal irrigation solution.

The remote control allows you to select each level of vibration intensity individually or you can use programmed 10 minute sessions that move through different vibration intensity. It's recommended when you first get the unit to position it against the wall or maybe in a corner where you have walls on both sides or between the wall and a piece of furniture for support. For balance and coordination is recommended not to hold onto anything by using the device but until you developed a good sense of balance you might want something you can grab onto if you feel like you're losing your balance.
You can virtually exercise every muscle in your body with this device and you can slide exercise tubing with handgrips under the device to exercise your arms while standing.
