Drier air causes sinuses to dry and crack, making people more susceptible to winter colds and flu viruses. In fact, this change from higher outside relative humidity to lower indoor relative humidity in the winter is a significant contributing factor in the spread of colds and flus. By maintaining the proper level of humidity indoors, you reduce illness in the winter. Studies have shown that the body’s immune system will function better when the relative humidity in a home is between 45%-65%.

Pneumococcus, staphylococcus, and streptococcus bacteria die up to 20 times faster at a relative humidity between 45% and 55%, than above 70% or below 20%. Dehydration can also cause negative health effects. To rinse your sinuses, use a neti pot, a small teapot-like device sold at most natural food stores. Combine three parts non-iodized salt and one part baking soda, and add 1/2 teaspoon of this mixture to 1/2 cup of warm water in the pot. This solution matches your body’s salinity, and baking soda makes it less irritating to your sinuses.

Lean over a sink and insert the spout of the pot into your left nostril. Tilt your head and the pot to the right and let the solution flow out your right nostril. Exhale forcefully through both nostrils and repeat on the other side. Repeat as needed.

IN THE NEWS: PESTICIDE INDUSTRY SQUASHES LOCAL RIGHTS The Lincoln County, Oregon, aerial spray ban was passed in May 2017, restricting timber companies from aerial pesticide sprayings in the county. The ban was a major success of Lincoln County Community Rights, a small group of volunteer Oregon locals who took on pesticide giants in a fight for what they believed to be the inalienable right to live in a county without pesticides harming their health. Pesticide trade group CropLife America, which had revenue of more than $16 million in 2015 and whose dues-paying members include Monsanto, Syngenta, Dow and DuPont, stepped in to try to stop the ban. CropLife America teamed up with PR firm Paradigm Communications and created an opposition group called Protect Family Farms and Forests to paint the local residents as eco-terrorists. A lawsuit has already been filed to make the pesticide ban invalid on the grounds that it is pre-empted by Oregon state law. Forty-three states have pesticide pre-emption laws that may restrict local governments from allowing pesticide restrictions that go beyond those required at a federal level, and the industry is trying to push for pre-emption at the federal level.

Chiropractic success story: I cannot tell this story enough. For us, chiropractic has been the answer to a serious problem. We were experiencing severe tantrums with Z., one of our two-and-a-half-year-old twins. The pediatrician said he was normal but at the “extreme end of the behavior scale.” As his mother, I wasn’t satisfied with this answer. I felt Z. was uncomfortable in some way or in some kind of pain, and I was desperately searching for answers. Z.’s tantrums would last up to an hour. They included sobbing, nonsense babbling, throwing and breaking things, and often hurting himself, whether biting himself, pulling his hair, or hitting his own head. He’d throw himself down anywhere, once down a concrete staircase onto a concrete patio, often in the middle of the street, and just lose control. Sometimes he would repeat, “help me, help me, help me.” Almost anything could spark the tantrums, sometimes just a noise or sound he might not like. There could be as many as 5-6 hour-long tantrums a day. The behavior started when Z. was just over a year old and seemed to be getting progressively worse. His communication skills, which had developed early, were also regressing. Instead of exchanging information in a typical toddler conversation, he often simply repeated the question asked or words said to him. He usually preferred to sit alone rather than have someone sit next to him. Fearing that one of us would soon need to be medicated, we started chiropractic care. Under steady chiropractic care, we immediately saw improvement in the degree of the tantrums. They initially continued to occur almost as often, but were not as severe. After five weeks of regular visits, the results are nothing short of miraculous. His communications skills are back to normal for his age. He initiates conversations again, comments reasonably on things, and asks and responds to questions. But perhaps my favorite improvement is the emotional one. He sits with me all the time and will give me all the kisses and hugs I ask for. He says, “I love you, Mommy,” whenever the feeling strikes him. I couldn’t be happier.

Car accidents are most likely the number one cause for chronic disability and/or pain. The August 1999 issue of American Family Physicians, the article notes that  3.5 million people are injured in motor vehicle accidents in the U.S. each year. Even minor car accidents can cause changes in the spine that can lead to degenerating joint disease and future pain.  Studies indicate that chiropractic care is the best treatment for the vast majority of injuries from a car accident.  The main reason that chiropractic patients have less problems in the future and recover better from their present complaints is because of the focus in chiropractic care.

The injuries to the spine will cause slight misalignments in the joints of the neck and back.  It’s these misalignments that produce the majority of symptoms, not pulled muscles.  Chiropractic care and analysis focuses on the detection and correction of spinal subluxations.  Subluxation is the term for misalignments that develop in the spine.  These misalignments can stay there for years unless they are corrected by chiropractic adjustments.  The average patient after a car accident that visit an emergency room usually are only given pain pills and muscle relaxers.  This of course allows the misalignments to remain.  It’s this focus on just the symptoms of the injury that leave a high percent of car accident victims with ongoing disability, pain and degenerating joint disease.

Twenty one unselected patients with an acute whiplash injury of the neck had neurological and neuropsychological assessment, cervical x rays, EEG, BAEP, MRI, and an otoneurological examination within two weeks of the injury. Subjectively, 13 patients reported concentration deficits, 18 reported sleep disturbances, 9 had symptoms of depression, and 7 female patients told of menstrual irregularities.   Scientific Automobile Accident Reconstruction treatise by Barzeley; Published by Mathew Bender 1984; Chapter 46:

In most cases you’re better off in the long-term to break a bone than to damage a joint.  When you damage a joint, you primarily damage the connective tissue in the joint which can leave that joint unstable for the rest of your life.  When you break a bone, the bone heals stronger than it was before.  Connective tissue has a history of poor healing.  By bringing that joint back to its proper alignment, you allow the maximum healing to the  soft tissue or connective tissue in that joint.  And by maintaining that alignment over the long-term, you assure maximum results. Out of 50 or so outcome studies which have been published in the past 40 years.  They nearly unanimously presented 30 to 50 percent of whiplash victims are left with some form of residual pain or dysfunction.

Many patients have been told this by their medical doctor and yet have gone on to find help through natural healthcare and chiropractic. It’s not that the medical doctors were lying to them but what they were really saying is drugs and surgery can’t help you. Their language is unfortunate because that traps many people with conditions they live with the rest of their lives. It’s also sad that medical doctors are brainwashed in school into believing that if drugs and surgery can’t help the patient in front of them, nothing else will.

 

Chiropractic and natural healthcare approaches the body with completely different eyes. We might do some of the same tests like lab work, MRIs or x-rays and physical exams but we interpret the information completely different in some cases. The focus of drug therapy is to find some chemical that will suppress your symptoms. It’s like with type II diabetes where the body is not responding to the insulin it’s producing so they use chemicals to force the sugar out through the kidneys. This doesn’t help the cells that need sugar for proper metabolism to get the sugar they need it just limits the danger of ever increasing blood sugar levels. The natural approach focuses on nutritional and lifestyle changes that help the cells recognize and respond properly to the insulin.

It’s been said there are no incurable diseases just some incurable patients. The process of getting well can be complex and difficult in some cases the motivation to make the changes in lifestyle and diet are more than some people are willing to do thus they carry their condition to an early grave. The key in any health problem is breaking the code for that disease and to do that sometimes it’s as simple as doing basic blood work and understanding the nutritional components of those findings but in some cases it’s more complicated, requiring innovative tools to break the code. That’s one reason we use a muscle reflex testing protocol that we call Vega testing. The founder of Vega testing was a German medical doctor/dentist who developed this test that included both the protocol of testing along with a sophisticated Ohm’s machine to study the response from the body. Because that machine was both expensive and subject to operator error we decided to use a muscle reflex test to work the protocol, it is more objective and quicker. In Vega testing we monitor muscle reflexes in response to certain diagnostic ampules to help us break the code of the disease, understand the underlying components. We can quickly, in a lot of cases, find the underlying toxicity, emotional component, nutritional imbalance that’s allowing the condition to remain in the body. Your body has an ability to heal itself but that ability can be interfered with because of different blockages. Our goal is to determine what those blockages are and remove them allowing your body what it does best, heal.

When the pH of the body gets out of balance (too acidic), we may experience low energy, fatigue, excess weight, poor digestion, aches and pains, and even more serious disorders.

The cycle of acidity begins primarily as a result of three things:
1. Ingesting acids. Eating too many acidifying foods like processed sugar, meats, dairy, coffee, alcohol, etc. Create an acid ash in the body. These acids can overload the body’s ability to neutralize them.
2. Creation of acids. Pathogens and microforms create acidifying toxins in the body. As the body becomes more and more acidic, bad bacteria, yeasts and other microforms proliferate in the body. Since these organisms are living, they eat as well as create resulting toxins. These toxins are often very acidifying.

How much do I drink?

Your water needs are based on your body weight. Half your body weight is your cleansing dose and 80% of that is your minimum because otherwise you’re dehydrated.

100 pound person, 50 ounces is their cleansing dose and 40 ounces is a minimum of fluids they should drink every day.

We carry very sensitive pH paper for determining your urine pH which is the pH we base your need for alkaline water on. If you’re a vegetarian and your pH is already alkaline then you can just drink regular filtered water. But if your pH is lower than 6.4 then you need to drink alkaline water. I would recommend 1 L a day minimum. Depending on your weight more might be indicated.

How alkaline of water should I drink? Water can come from about 7.8 to 10. You can drink water that is to alkaline for you and it is best to be tested at our office to determine the best pH. Waters with a pH of 9 to 9.5 tend to test the best, but your situation might be different.

Both saliva and urine pH should be 6.4. When you maintain that then your blood and cells will be able to maintain the pH that is right for them. Saliva pH indicate your digestive pH whereas urine pH indicates your body pH. So for determining your need for alkaline water urine pH is the one to watch. One of the reasons that antacids sell so well is that they stop the pain in 60-70% of the cases. (A recent online survey of over 4200 patients taking Priolosec.) As you chew your food you help break it down for your stomach as well as blend it with saliva which helps start the whole process. As the food enters the stomach it starts to churn and release digestive enzymes. Hydrocloric acid (HCl) is one of the most important enzymes that the stomach releases. The amount of HCl that leaves the stomach with the food entering the small intestines stimulate fluids from the liver and gallbladder as well as enzymes from the pancreas to complete the digestive process. It is essential that the right amount of HCl enters the small intestines to begin a wavelike motion called peristalsis that help move the food throughout the intestines. A healthy stomach has a mucous lining that protects the stomach from its own acids. When the body senses that this coating has been reduced it automatically reduces the amount of HCl it secretes. In their new study, the Wisconsin scientists initially recruited five healthy men and women (including Folts) to drink about three servings of purple grape juice at a sitting — some 20 to 24 ounces. An hour later, the researchers sampled the volunteers’ blood and put it into a device that measures platelet stickiness. Compared to blood samples taken an hour prior to drinking the juice, the later blood was almost 50 percent less prone to platelet clumping.

That’s a lot of juice, Folts acknowledges, so he decided to explore what would happen if he halved the dose and drank it daily for a week. Two or 3 days after the last glass was drunk, each volunteer returned for another blood test.

The results, reported this week, indicate that regular consumption of the popular juice appears to have a carryover effect. Even after a hiatus of several days, the volunteers’ blood was about 25 percent less likely to clump than before the treatment began.

His group’s data now suggest that even if the juice had been drunk the day before, it would still confer some protection.

Unlike aspirin

For nearly a decade, cardiologists have known that healthy men over 50 — and postmenopausal women — can nearly halve their risk of heart attack by taking an aspirin every other day. Like grape juice, this drug appears to work by inhibiting platelet aggregation.

However, when adrenaline is pumped into the blood in response to stress or heavy exercise, Folts points out, aspirin’s platelet inhibition virtually disappears. So in the new study, he tested grape juice drinkers’ blood to see if the same thing happened to them.

In one case, he took the volunteers’ blood, added adrenaline to it, and then measured its susceptibility to platelet clumping. In another, some volunteers exercised and then provided blood for analysis. In both cases, Folts says, the juice depressed platelet clumping.

In the late seventies however, we discovered that if we raised the adrenaline or epinephrine, that the same thing, 75% -80% of the time clot formation comes back with aspirin and that’s a serious problem. (CNN)Gulping down an artificially sweetened beverage not only may be associated with health risks for your body, but also possibly your brain, a new study suggests.

Artificially sweetened drinks, such as diet sodas, were tied to a higher risk of stroke and dementia in the study, which published in the American Heart Association’s journal Stroke on Thursday.

The study sheds light only on an association, as the researchers were unable to determine an actual cause-and-effect relationship between sipping artificially sweetened drinks and an increased risk for stroke and dementia. Therefore, some experts caution that the findings should be interpreted carefully.

No connection was found between those health risks and other sugary beverages, such as sugar-sweetened sodas, fruit juice and fruit drinks.

Are diet sodas dangerous to your health?

“We have little data on the health effects of diet drinks and this is problematic because diet drinks are popular amongst the general population,” said Matthew Pase, a senior research fellow in the department of neurology at Boston University School of Medicine and lead author of the new study.

“More research is needed to study the health effects of diet drinks so that consumers can make informed choices concerning their health,” he said.

The new study involved data on 2,888 adults older than 45 and 1,484 adults older than 60 from the town of Framingham, Massachusetts. The data came from the Framingham Heart Study, a project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Boston University.

In the older-than-45 group, the researchers measured for stroke and in the older-than-60 group, they measured for dementia.

“The sample sizes are different because we studied people of different ages,” Pase said. “Dementia is rare in people under the age of 60 and so we focused only on those aged over 60 years for dementia. Similarly, stroke is rare in people aged under 45 and so we focused on people older than age 45 for stroke.”

The researchers analyzed how many sugary beverages and artificially sweetened soft drinks each person in the two different age groups drank, at different time points, between 1991 and 2001. Then, they compared that with how many people suffered stroke or dementia over the next 10 years.

Compared to never drinking artificially sweetened soft drinks, those who drank one a day were almost three times as likely to have an ischemic stroke, caused by blocked blood vessels, the researchers found.

They also found that those who drank one a day were nearly three times as likely to be diagnosed with dementia.

Those who drank one to six artificially sweetened beverages a week were 2.6 times as likely to experience an ischemic stroke but were no more likely to develop dementia, Pase said.

“So, it was not surprising to see that diet soda intake was associated with stroke and dementia. I was surprised that sugary beverage intake was not associated with either the risks of stroke or dementia because sugary beverages are known to be unhealthy,” Pase said.

In response, Lauren Kane, a spokeswoman for the American Beverage Association, issued a statement from the group that said low-calorie sweeteners found in beverages have been proven safe by worldwide government safety authorities.

“The FDA, World Health Organization, European Food Safety Authority and others have extensively reviewed low-calorie sweeteners and have all reached the same conclusion — they are safe for consumption,” the statement said.

“While we respect the mission of these organizations to help prevent conditions like stroke and dementia, the authors of this study acknowledge that their conclusions do not — and cannot — prove cause and effect. And according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), many risk factors can increase an individual’s likelihood of developing stroke and dementia including age, hypertension, diabetes and genetics. NIH does not mention zero calorie sweeteners as a risk factor,” the statement said. “America’s beverage companies support and encourage balanced lifestyles by providing people with a range of beverage choices — with and without calories and sugar — so they can choose the beverage that is right for them.”

That sweet drink may age you

Separate previous studies have shown an association between the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and adverse health effects, such as type 2 diabetesobesityheart diseasestroke, and possibly even heart failure.

“This article provides further evidence though on artificially sweetened beverages and their possible effects on vascular health, including stroke and dementia,” said Dr. Ralph Sacco, professor and chair of neurology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, about the new study.

Sacco was a co-author of an editorial published alongside the study in the journal Stroke on Thursday.

“We believe the pathways of which artificially sweetened beverages would affect the brain are probably through vascular mechanisms,” Sacco said.

“When the authors controlled for hypertension and diabetes and obesity the effects diminish, which implies that some of the effects of artificially sweetened beverages could still be going through a vascular pathway,” he said about the new study. “Many strokes are caused by hardening of arteries; and the risk of dementia is also increased by the hardening of arteries in large and small vessels. So, I believe the mechanisms may be through vascular disease, though we can’t prove it.”

Heather Snyder, senior director of medical and scientific operations at the Alzheimer’s Association, called the new study “a piece of a larger puzzle” when it comes to better understanding how your diet and behaviors impact your brain.

“It’s actually really more of your overall diet and overall lifestyle that is linked to cardiovascular disease and diabetes risk, and we do know that heart disease and diabetes are linked to an increased risk of dementia,” said Snyder, who was not involved in the new study.

 

“We know that sugary and artificially sweetened beverages are not great for us. This study adds strength to that, and also says they may not be great for your brain, specifically,” she said. “There are alternatives — things we can all do everyday to keep our brains and our bodies as healthy as we can as we age.” Alternatives such as regular cardiovascular exercise that elevates heart rate and increases blood flow and doing puzzles and games to activate and challenge the mind. These are recommendations from the Alzheimer’s Associations list of 10 lifestyle habits to reduce risk of cognitive decline.

Many people have problems swallowing pills. When it comes to nutritional therapy your ability and consistency in taking your supplements determine your rate of recovery. One issue that I have discovered that affects a person’s ability to comfortably swallow pills is a flap of tissue called the epiglottis. If this doesn’t work correctly pills that you swallow can try to go down the windpipe. This can set up anxiety when it comes to pill taking which can escalate to a real phobia about swallowing pills.

Before I discuss the technique you want to remember never to take capsules and tablets together. These both have different dynamics in fluid. The rule of thumb is when you take a tablet you lean your head back and then swallow; when you take a capsule you lean your head forward and then swallow.

Now to the issue of the epiglottis, most people will put capsules or tablets in their mouth and then add the water to swallow. It’s important when you’re adding the water that you’re constantly breathing in through your nose. At the end of respiration when you go to swallow it’s just natural for the epiglottis to close so there is no confusion between which pipe the pills are supposed to go. If you breathe in properly the chances of a pill trying to go down the wrong pipe is very slim.

Below are additional tricks to proper swallowing:

Fill a plastic water or soda bottle with water. Put the tablet on your tongue and close your lips tightly around the bottle opening. Take a drink, keeping contact between the bottle and your lips and using a sucking motion to swallow the water and pill.

Until you know what’s behind your swallowing issues, here are a few things you can do to make swallowing medicine a little easier:

  • Put a pill in applesauce or pudding. The texture can make it easier to swallow pills whole.
  • Grind a pill into a powder and add it to applesauce or pudding.
  • Cut a pill with a pill splitter and swallow the smaller pieces one by one.

  

 

  • You can also use pieces of a bagel, a cracker, or a cookie as well. The texture is similar enough to help the pill go down once the food is chewed.
  • You can also take a drink of water afterward to help it go down easier.
  • Some medications need to be taken on an empty stomach. Check the bottle of your medication to see if you need to take your medicine on an empty stomach.

Cut a gummy bear. To help you swallow a pill, you can stick it inside a gummy bear. Take the gummy bear and cut a small pocket in the stomach of the bear. Slip the pill inside. Eat the gummy bear, but don’t chew it; chewing some medication will change the duration and timing onset of the medication. Just try to swallow it, then once it’s in your throat quickly drink your water.[2]

  • This may be difficult if you can’t swallow the gummy bear. It may take practice.
  • This method is especially helpful for children. Helping mask the pill taking act with a gummy bear will help ease her into taking her medication.

Put the pill inside honey or peanut butter. Pills can be taken with honey or peanut butter because they ease the passage of the pill down your throat. Get a spoon full of either food. Place the pill in the middle of dollop of food you have on the spoon. Make sure to push it into the food. Next, swallow the spoonful of honey or peanut butter with the pill inside. Wash down with water.[3]

  • You should drink water before and after this method. The honey and peanut butter are relatively thick and can feel slow going down. Hydrating your throat beforehand and after will help get the food down quicker and without choking.

Try soft food. If you can’t take your pill with bread, try taking it in a soft food such as applesauce, yogurt, ice cream, pudding, or gelatin. This is a common method used in hospitals for patients who have difficulty in swallowing. Make a small dish of the food. Drop the pill into the dish. Eat a little bit of the food before you take the bite with the pill in it. Then take the bite with the pill in it. It should go down easily with the food when you swallow.[4]

  • Make sure you don’t chew in the pill.

Use a straw. For some people, using a straw to drink water or a beverage helps the pill to go down better. Place the pill on the back of your tongue. Drink something through a straw and swallow the liquid and the pill. Keep drinking for a few sips after you swallow it to help the pill go down.

  • The suction used to pull the liquid through the straw makes it easier to swallow the pill.[9][10]

IN THE NEWS: What is alkaline water and can it really help with heartburn? You may have noticed the buzz about alkaline water recently: It’s a staple of the alkaline diet, and promoted by celebs like Miranda Kerr for its supposed health perks. Among those perks is the belief that alkaline H2O—which, by definition, has a higher pH (and lower acidity) than what comes out of the tap—can help neutralize stomach acid and relieve symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, aka heartburn. NOTE: though this article was interesting and it does show benefits for heartburn that’s not the primary purpose of alkaline water. Alkaline water is one tool along with other foods and drinks to change your pH to more normal setting. Both urine and saliva should be 6.4. When your urine pH gets down to 5.5 or below this puts your body under stress. One of the things that happens is you start leeching alkaline minerals from your bone and teeth. So alkaline water can be an important tool if you system is hyper acidic which usually means it’s inflamed.

WELLNESS: Misusing contact lenses can result in serious eye damage, CDC says Many reported cases of serious eye damage result from misusing contact lenses, including sleeping in them or wearing them beyond their recommended use, a report released Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) suggests. Between 2005 and 2015, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) received reports of 1,075 contact lens-related corneal infections that involved ulcers or keratitis, which is inflammation of the cornea, according to a CDC news release. About 20 percent of these reports involved serious eye damage, but about a quarter of those cases could have been avoided with proper contact lens use. “Health promotion activities should focus on informing contact lens wearers of common behaviors that might put them at risk for eye infections, such as sleeping in contact lenses and exposing lenses to tap water, distilled water, or recreational water,” the CDC wrote. “Additionally, prompt reporting of adverse events can help [the] FDA identify and understand the risks associated with the use of contact lenses.”

But the time it took to fall asleep and time spent sleeping were similar under both conditions. However, “we found a delay of 30 minutes in the generation of the restorative slow waves during sleep in the iPad condition,” Gronli told Reuters Health by email. A new Apple OS update includes a nighttime mode, which takes into account the effects of too much blue light in the late evening by filtering it out, said Christian Cajochen, head of the Center for Chronobiology at the University of Basel in Switzerland who was not part of the new study.

CONDITION OF THE WEEK: Breaking the code of disease Part of the challenge that any doctor has is trying to understand and to help a patient with a certain condition. In chiropractic and natural healthcare we take a totally different approach in treating our patients. DIET: SUGAR MAY INCREASE BREAST, LUNG CANCER RISK, STUDY FINDS Table sugar may increase the risk of breast cancer, according to a new animal study from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Previous research has drawn a link between higher sugar intake and breast cancer development, suggesting inflammation as a source, but the current study instead looked at the role of sugar in mammary gland tumor development. The study found that at six months of age, 30 percent of mice on a starch-control diet had measurable tumors, while 60 to 58 percent of mice on sucrose-enriched diets developed mammary tumors. Study authors said moderate sugar consumption is critical, as the per capita consumption of sugar in the United States is more than 100 pounds per year, and increased consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is a significant contributor to the worldwide epidemics of obesity, heart disease and cancer.

IN THE NEWS: STUDY MAY REVEAL WHY SOME PEOPLE LIVE TO 100 A new study suggests that centenarians have fewer genes linked to major illnesses.  Science may be closer to figuring out why some people live so darn long. Researchers studying 1,800 people over the age of 100 and another 5,400 over the age of 90 discovered four genes linked to their longevity, Live Science reports. In short, centenarians seem to have fewer genes connected to major diseases, according to Time. “It seems intuitively obvious that avoiding disease is part of the strategy of becoming a centenarian,” Time quotes Kim as saying. But he notes that conclusion goes against “really strong dogma in the field.” Most researchers tend to believe undiscovered anti-aging genes are responsible, but Kim posits it could be much simpler: Centenarians may just get fewer diseases.

 IN THE NEWS: One man lost most of his brain … and had no idea As it turns out maybe the Scarecrow didn’t need that brain after all. Real Clear Science revisits a bizarre case from 2007 in which a relatively normal 44-year-old man—married, two kids, job—turned out to have been going about his life without most of his brain. According to a New Scientist article published when the case was revealed in July 2007, one neurologist estimated the man was missing more than 50 percent to 75 percent of his brain but—other than a slightly below-average IQ of 75, per the study in the Lancet—was suffering no ill effects. Real Clear Science reports the man’s condition stemmed from a case of hydrocephalus (an excessive buildup the cerebrospinal fluid that cushions your brain) suffered as a baby. According to the New Scientist, neurologists could not explain how the man could function while the parts of the brain that control motion, language, vision, emotions, and more were severely compressed. In the end, the case was pointed to as an extreme example of the brain’s adaptability.

IN THE NEWS: Losing sense of smell linked with earlier death People who have problems with their sense of smell may be at increased risk for dying sooner than those who don’t have trouble smelling, a new study suggests. Researchers analyzed information from more than 1,100 adults in New York City whose average age was 80. The participants took a “scratch and sniff” test in which they attempted to identify 40 common odors. People who scored less than 18 points out of 40 were said to have anosmia, or an inability to smell. The study found that the people with scores in the low range (zero to 20 points) were nearly four times more likely to die over a four-year period than those with scores in the high range (31 to 40 points). The study is published today (June 3) in the journal Annals of Neurology.
